So, to my mind, it is indeed a plus that reinforces and re-establishes a tradition by which the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is known, re-established to the effect that no allegation of corruption can be swept under the carpet. So, it is indeed a plus and not a blow.”<br /> <br /> The Presidency had suspended Magu and about 11 other top officials of the EFCC including the Secretary to the Commission, Ola Olukoyede.<br /> <br /> The EFCC under Magu is alleged to have been unable to account for the interest accrued to recovered loot of N550bn.<br /> <br /> The suspended EFCC boss is also accused of buying a property in Dubai worth N570m.<br /> <br /> Magu, who was detained for about 10 days by the police before his release, has, however, denied all the allegations levelled against him.<br /> <br /> Attempts by the suspended EFCC boss to defend himself before the panel have, however, proved futile.

NDDC has proved to be the epicenter of graft in this country. There is nothing to show for trillions of naira poured into the commission over the years. He, however, said the attacks in Southern Kaduna were laced with ethnic and religious colourations.<br /> <br /> Giving the details of the latest attacks, a source told said that apart from those killed, scores were injured during the attack which took place at about 8pm when the villagers were sleeping.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> The deceased had since been given mass burial while those who sustained varying degrees of injuries were admitted to the Idon General Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.<br /> <br /> Our correspondent gathered that the gunmen attacked the villagers with guns and machetes.<br /> <br /> This was fourth in the series of attacks launched by suspected Fulani militia on Southern Kaduna communities in Kaura and Zango-Kataf local government areas of the state.<br /> <br /> Recently, gunmen invaded Kukum-Daji village in Kaura Local Government Area at about 10pm and killed no fewer than 21 people at a wedding, mostly youths.<br /> <br /> In another attack that took place last Monday in Gora Gan in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area, 10 people were killed, while on Wednesday, five people were killed in an attack on Kizachi-Chawai community, Kauru Local Government Area.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Police Command has yet to confirm the fresh attacks.<br /> <br /> The state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige, did not take his calls or reply to a text message sent by our correspondent.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party minority caucus of the Kaduna State House of Assembly has said both the federal and state governments are not doing enough to stop the killings in the southern part of the state.<br /> <br /> Emmanuel Kantiok, who spoke on behalf of the lawmakers at a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Kaduna on Friday, said the citizens of Southern Kaduna whose lives were cut short deserved the President’s empathy.<br /> <br /> “How would the government explain the killings in Zangon Kataf during a state government-imposed 24-hour curfew?” he asked, adding that it was high time the government deployed security operatives to unmasked the perpetrators of the killings.<br /> <br /> He said, “Our attention has been drawn to the Presidency’s press statement dated July 21, 2020, on the spate of attacks and killings in Southern Kaduna which was signed by Mallam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity.<br /> <br /> “The Presidency must accept that it has failed woefully in its primary duty of the protection of lives and property. Sadly, it is also failing to demonstrate empathy as a basic instinct required in the art of governance, especially in troubled times.<br /> <br /> “The Presidency’s statement is most unfortunate under a democratic dispensation that should hold and fulfil the promise of how inviolable and sacred human life is.<br /> <br /> “Garba Shehu and his co-travellers need not be reminded that the first duty of every President is the security and protection of the citizens of the country, irrespective of their inclination. It is, indeed, the whole duty of the President.”<br /> <br /> Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Sunday Marshall-Katung, said the Presidency should accept its failure on the killings and destruction of property in Southern Kaduna.

Two of them kill me. A killer must surely die.”<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Our correspondent learnt that the deceased pasted the note at three strategic places in the market before he took his own life.<br /> <br /> According to the Iyaloja of the market, Aderemi Thomas, the accused persons played lottery in the deceased’s shop, but after winning, they could not get their money.<br /> <br /> She said, “I was called around 8am to come to the market because Baba Pool had committed suicide.  I called the owner of the shop to join me in the market, but he said he was far away.<br /> <br /> “When I got to the market, I was told what happened and not long after, the police came to interrogate us and we took them to the scene.<br /> <br /> “I learnt that Bonny and Osuma came to play lottery in his shop, but he did not submit their tickets to the lottery office. So, when those people realised that they had won, they asked for their money. Instead of explaining to them that he did not submit their tickets, he committed suicide.”<br /> <br /> The Babaloja of the market, Najimudeen Ajadi, said he was doing sanitation when someone notified him of the incident.<br /> <br /> Our correspondent learnt that the matter was reported at the Sabo Police Station.<br /> <br /> The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the two accused persons had been arrested for questioning.<br /> <br /> He said, “We received a report about a 70-year-old who committed suicide in the market. The man accused one 85-year-old man and another man.  He left a note that those two people were responsible for his death; we want to look at the extent of their culpability. We have commenced investigation on the role they might have played and on why he accused them.”

Nigerian police officers from Iyaganku came to his house to effect arrest of his son, Kabiru. He was said to have been involved in a fight.<br /> <br /> “The son was not at home. The police allegedly arrested the father in lieu of the son. This is called hostage arrest. They drove him to State CID, Iyaganku. They also took with him Kabiru’s brother, called Jelili.<br /> <br /> “Mr. Omotosho was kept for seven days. He was not charged to court and neither were his relatives allowed to see him. Between yesterday night and today, Mr. Kehinde Omotosho died in police cell.<br /> <br /> “The family Representative of the Late Mr. Omotosho, while speaking with me said these words, ‘The Nigerian Police has killed our family member. We are only cheated because we are not educated and because we don’t know anybody’”.<br /> <br /> Fadeyi asked the police to prepare for battle as the matter would not be swept under the carpet.<br /> <br /> “Nigerian Police authorities are being put on notice that this matter shall not be swept under the carpet. We shall demand justice for the bereaved and his family,” Fadeyi said.<br /> <br /> When contacted on the telephone, Police Public Relations Officer, Oyo State command,Mr. Gbenga Fadeyi, said he was not aware of the incident but promised to find out.<br /> <br /> “I just heard about this now but I will find out and get back to you later in the day,” the police spokesman said.<br /> <br /> The Nigeria Police Force has been accused of committing several acts of rights abuse including torture of suspects in detention and arresting of relatives in lieu of wanted suspects<br /> <br /> According to global rights group, Amnesty International, civilians in Nigeria are being extorted, raped, tortured, and killed by police officers. Victims of these crimes are still waiting for justice because the anti-torture law meant to provide justice is not being enforced.

I am also troubled by the number of illegal vehicular checkpoints set up by non-state armed groups along main supply routes.<br /> <br /> “These checkpoints disrupt the delivery of life-saving assistance and heighten the risks for civilians of being abducted, killed or injured, with aid workers increasingly being singled out.<br /> <br /> “This is tragically not the first killing of kidnapped aid workers. We have repeatedly called for such devastating fate and blatant violation of international humanitarian law to never happen again.<br /> <br /> “And yet, it does. I implore all armed parties to step up their responsibilities and stop targeting aid workers and civilians,” he said.<br /> <br /> Kallon said that all aid workers and the assistance they provide to the most vulnerable populations made the difference between life and death for entire communities.<br /> <br /> According to him, nearly eight million people are in need of urgent life-saving assistance in north-east Nigeria at the beginning of the year and today, 10.6 million people need urgent support as conflict-affected states battle the COVID-19 pandemic.<br /> <br /> “At a time when humanitarian needs have reached unprecedented levels, it is unacceptable that those who are trying to help are being attacked and killed,” he said.<br /> <br /> Kallon said that the incident would not deter the international community from providing aid to millions of Nigerians who desperately needed assistance in the north-east.<br /> <br /> He said that the humanitarian community stood in solidarity with the people of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states who had suffered long years of conflict and now needed protection against a deadly virus.

The number of recovered patients is 4,662, while 3,431 cases are active.<br /> <br /> “The government would like to express its dismay at the discovery of a letter signed by the minister of public health urgently requesting support in the fight against the COVID-19 epidemic,” government spokeswoman Lalatiana Rakotozafy said in a statement dated Tuesday.<br /> <br /> In a letter addressed Monday to donors, Health Minister Ahmad Ahmad made an “urgent appeal” to development agencies.<br /> <br /> “Over the past weeks, the COVID-19 epidemic has evolved in a very critical way in Madagascar with notable flare-ups in certain regions, particularly in Antananarivo,” it said.<br /> <br /> The health ministry itemised what it called its “most urgent needs” — oxygen bottles, 337 ventilators, 2.3 million face masks, 697,000 pairs of gloves and 533,200 medical blouses.<br /> <br /> The ministry’s appeal “is a personal initiative”, taken “without consulting” either the government or Rajoelina, the government statement said.<br /> <br /> “It is clear that many crucial points in the management of this health crisis have escaped the vigilance of the minister of public health,” it said.<br /> <br /> To date Madagascar, a poor Indian Ocean island-nation, has recorded 8,162 coronavirus cases, including 69 deaths.<br /> <br /> President Rajoelina has been promoting an infusion derived from artemisia — a plant with proven anti-malarial properties — as a homegrown cure for COVID-19.<br /> <br /> The drink, which has been called Covid-Organics, has been distributed not only in Madagascar but also in several other countries, mainly in Africa.<br /> <br /> The UN’s World Health Organization (WHO) has cautioned that there have been no published scientific studies to validate claims for the drink, and mainstream scientists have pointed out the potential risks from untested concoctions.<br /> <br /> – Poverty –<br /> <br /> Most of Madagascar’s 26 million inhabitants live in grinding poverty with limited access to healthcare, and regularly take herbal teas for a variety of common ailments.<br /> <br /> The government has blamed the recent jump in cases on “increased testing capacity”.<br /> <br /> “Positive COVID-19 cases did not take (Covid-Organics) or only took it sporadically, without following the prescribed dosage,” said official documents sent to AFP on Tuesday.<br /> <br /> On June 4, Education Minister Rijasoa Andriamanana was sacked after announcing a plan to spend $2.2 million (1.9 million euros) on sweets and lollipops for children to ease the “bitter taste” of the drink.<br /> <br /> The expense sparked outrage, fanned by the Malagasy press, and the order was cancelled.

The beneficiary agencies are: the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of which the valued price is to be debited from their allocation; State House, National Commission for Refugees and Displaced Persons; Federal Inland Revenue Service  and National Directorate of Employment.”<br /> <br /> The suspended EFCC boss said about 450 other vehicles, which had been recovered, had yet to be sold despite receiving presidential approval to do so.<br /> <br /> “The commission presently has presidential approval to dispose over 450 forfeited vehicles located in Lagos and Abuja. The vehicles have been valued by the National Automotive Council Valuers and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. But no sale/disposal has been conducted yet,” Magu stated.<br /> <br /> He said some of the houses permanently forfeited to the Federal Government by looters had also been handed over to some government agencies like the Voice of Nigeria, North -East Development Commission and the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate.<br /> <br /> The suspended EFCC boss explained that some other properties, which had been forfeited pending the outcome of court cases, were being rented by the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Nigerian Army and other agencies of government.<br /> <br /> The letter further read, “Real properties finally forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria and allocated to some agencies for official use in line with the Presidential approval are: Voice of Nigeria,  National Directorate of Employment, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, North East Development Commission and Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate.<br /> <br /> “Properties under interim forfeiture order are rented by the following government agencies: Nigerian Army, Federal Ministry of Finance, Fiscal Responsibility Commission, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.<br /> <br /> “Other agencies of government that have approached the commission to rent properties under interim forfeiture order include: National Human Rights Commission and National Council for Arts and culture.”<br /> <br /> Magu said the commission also temporarily handed over property in Lagos to the Lagos State Government for use as isolation centres for COVID-19 patients.<br /> <br /> The suspended EFCC boss attached photographs of some of the recovered assets to the letter he addressed to the panel.<br /> <br /> However, it was learnt that an attempt by Magu’s lawyer, Wahab Shittu, to submit the letter to the panel on Monday was rebuffed.<br /> <br /> The panel was said to have insisted that there was no basis for the letter and informed Shittu that Magu would be summoned if there was a need for clarification.<br /> <br /> “An attempt to submit the letter to the secretary of the panel on Monday failed. Magu’s team was informed that the panel does not entertain letters but it  is purely an investigative one. If there is a need for clarification, Magu would be invited,” a source said.<br /> <br /> Magu’s lawyer did not respond to calls on Tuesday evening.<br /> <br /> A government source however said the Presidency would not like to be dragged into the matter.<br /> <br /> “Magu wrote to the panel, it is the panel that should be responding to him if the need be,” the source said.<br /> <br /> Magu was arrested by the police on July 6, 2020 and brought before the Justice Ayo Salami-led panel which is sitting at the Presidential Villa.<br /> <br /> He was subsequently suspended and detained for about 10 days at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, Abuja. While in custody, his house in the Karu area of Abuja was searched.<br /> <br /> In an earlier statement and open letter titled, ‘Publications prejudicial to the proceedings of this honourable panel,’ Magu’s lawyer, Shittu, had complained that the allegations against Magu circulating on social and print media were completely false and a misrepresentation of the probe.

LASEPA also sealed two other entertainment outlets — Page One in Ajah and Bien Mange in Abraham Adesanya estate.<br /> <br /> Farms City, which is situated along Admiralty Way, Lekki, and Quilox Pool and Bar, which is located in the Ajah area, were alleged to have broken different sections of the state’s environmental law.<br /> <br /> While Page One was sealed for operating a beer parlor that encouraged large gathering, Bien Mange allegedly converted a residential building for commercial purposes.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Speaking in event of the law enforcement exercise, Dolapo Fasawe, LASEPA general manager, said the action was in line with the state’s Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017.<br /> <br /> “The agency acted on a tip from a whistleblower alleging traffic congestion, disobedience of the environmental laws as well as non-compliance with safety protocols,” she said.<br /> <br /> “Upon arrival, the team noticed several infractions and identified the same to the management, which led to clearing out the fun seekers and shutting down the facility pending full investigations.”<br /> <br /> Fasawe added that the sealed facilities disregarded directives on the use of the face mask, social gathering, and 10 pm curfew.<br /> <br /> “All offenders, including facilities, event planners, organizers, and promoters would face stern repercussions as consequences for their nonchalant engagement,” she said.<br /> <br /> “Apart from the environmental contravention observed in some of the facilities visited, we saw clearly that there were so many other pressing issues that needed to be handled<br /> <br /> “All other relevant MDAs… are in sync in ensuring that the position of the government in flattening the curve is sustained in order to reduce the number of positive cases to the pandemic soon.”
