Maj.- Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, the Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Saturday said that any corps member that violate electoral laws during the forthcoming general elections would be prosecuted.<br />
<br />
<br />
To this end, Kazaure, warned corps members that would be on election duty against unnecessary ‘friendship’ with politicians in order to avoid any form of inducement.<br />
<br />
<br />
Kazaure, who addressed corps members in Enugu, on the sidelines of the forthcoming general elections, charged them to be good ambassadors of the scheme and their families.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that security agencies had been mobilised to provide cover for the corps members and should not lose sight of security tips while on the field.<br />

He cautioned them against taking any form of inducement and friendship with the locals while at their duty posts.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Study your environment and be security conscious. When face with obvious danger, secure yourself first.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Do not enter vehicles belonging to politicians and strangers as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will provide all your needs,”he said.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that all corps members on election duty must appear in their uniforms with their identity cards.<br />
<br />
<br />
Kazaure said that participation of corps members in the election as ad hoc staff is not by compulsion, but a voluntary service to your fatherland.<br />
<br />
<br />
In an interactive session, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Mr Emeka Ononamadu, said that corps members participating in the election would have insurance cover.<br />
<br />
<br />
Ononamadu said that adequate logistics that covered incentives and vehicles for easy movement to areas of deployment had been put in place.<br />
<br />
<br />
The REC said that 2,958 Presiding Officers would be sourced from the NYSC in the state, with additional 1,188 Electoral Officers from other Federal Government agencies in the state.<br />
<br />
<br />
“It is a rare privilege to have all the presiding officers from the NYSC,’ Ononamadu said.<br />
<br />
<br />
Reports have it that the highlight of the visit of the NYSC boss was the inauguration of a new office block at the NYSC secretariat completed by the Coordinator in the state, Alhaji Ahmed Ikaka.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">President Muhammadu Buhari suspended Onnoghen on Friday, citing an order from the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In a statement on Saturday, the US embassy in Nigeria said it had taken note of widespread criticisms that the suspension is illegal.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The Embassy of the United States is deeply concerned by the impact of the executive branch’s decision to suspend and replace the Chief Justice and head of the judicial branch without the support of the legislative branch on the eve of national and state elections,” the statement read.</div>

Former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili, has declared the move by President Muhammadu Buhari to Suspend The Chief Justice Of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen , as an unconstitutional action.<br />

Ezekwesili, who is the convener of Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG) has questioned the move of the president, asking that “What happened to the Constitutional provision 292 on the Discipline of Judges?”<br />

In a tweet to show her displeasure, she advised President Buhari to “immediately reverse” what she described as “the constitutional violation.<br />

The organised labour said that it would mobilize its members to storm the House of Representatives Public Hearing at the National Assembly complex on Monday.<br />

The organised labour also said it will not accept the N27,000 approved by the National Council of State as the new minimum wage for state government and private sector workers, stressing that whenever agreement was reached in tripartite committee, it always remained so.<br />
<br />
<br />
The Central Working Committee, CWC, of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, in its resolution after meeting in Abuja told members of the National Assembly to do the needful by upholding the N30,000 approved by email the Minimum Wage Tripartite Committee.<br />
<br />
<br />
According to NLC president Ayuba Wabba, “The meeting deliberated on one item which is the issue of the transmission of the national minimum wage bill to the National Assembly.<br />

<br />
<br />
“The meeting reviewed the whole situation including the fact that N30,000 was agreed at the tripartite negotiating meeting to be the minimum wage.<br />
<br />
<br />
“It was out of place and procedure for that figure to be reduced to N27,000.<br />
<br />
<br />
Going by the convention of the International Labour Organisation, the figure that was agreed by the tripartite committee cannot be changed by any of the parties except through a process.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Government as an employer cannot unilaterally change the figure.<br />
<br />
<br />
“This is about law and procedure.<br />
<br />
Therefore, the CWC has frowned on that and rejected the issue of reducing the figure. We still maintain that we stand on the outcome of the tripartite committee.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We will mobilize our members and engage the National Assembly on the issue. The negotiation must be respected and NASS should do the needful.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We have put our members on the alert that if that is not done, certainly we will also mobilize to take appropriate action that is desirable to protect and ensure that the tripartite process be respected.<br />
<br />
<br />
“That has been the process according to the provision of ILO convention on minimum wage mechanism.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We have also agreed that on Monday, we will mobilise to the House of Representatives during the public hearing on the bill to make sure that the right thing is done.<br />
<br />
<br />
“The NASS members represent the people and we call on them to respect the outcome of the tripartite process. Importantly, when you look at N30,000, it s a compromised position in the context of today’s economy of Nigeria. We should be commended.<br />
<br />
<br />
“As far back as 2011, the N18,000 minimum wage was equivalent to $150, today, the N30,000 is less than $100. We juxtapose this argument within the content of reality and demand that what was mutually agreed after all other factors have been put into consideration, including the ability to pay, must be respected.”

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for Delta Central Senatorial District , Evelyn Oboro , on Friday said her life was in danger.<br />
<br />
<br />
Oboro , who represents Uvwie, Okpe and Sapele Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives , also accused the state police command of complicity for allegedly refusing to protect her during her campaigns.<br />
<br />
<br />
The lawmaker said that she had been receiving strange calls from unknown political thugs threatening to kill her if she did not pull out of the race .<br />
<br />
<br />
She noted that her application for police protection was declined for no cogent reason .<br />
<br />
<br />
Oboro , in the same vein, accused the police of arming his opponent , Senator Ovie Omo - Agege , with truck loads of policemen , who he allegedly uses to intimidate her supporters and other political leaders in the senatorial district.<br />

She said , “ I applied to the Nigeria Police that I will need security coverage for my campaigns and I was denied .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ But surprisingly , for the past two weeks , the APC candidate ( Omo -Agege ) has been campaigning round the senatorial district with 13 trucks of policemen. Police armoured cars are following him .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ He is intimidating my supporters and members of Delta Central . He is boasting that he would arrest me , incapacitate me and he would lock my house down like they did to some members of the National Assembly.<br />
“ He is also boasting of arresting my supporters . ”<br />
<br />
<br />
Oboro appealed to the Acting Inspector General Police to direct the Delta State Police Commissioner to urgently deploy policemen to protect her , noting that threats to her life should not be taken with a pinch of salt .<br />
<br />
<br />
While stressing that she would win the election, she also lamented the destruction of her campaign posters by thugs suspected to be loyal to her opponents .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ I am the candidate to beat in the election. I am the most popular candidate in the race . No Urhobo woman has ever been elected to the National Assembly except me .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ I am currently in the House of Representatives . Public opinion shows that I am the most popular candidate.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ I am raising this alarm to alert the Acting IGP that between December last year and now, they have transferred all the Divisional Police Officers from Delta Central.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ Policemen from ranks and files are being transferred from Delta Central in fulfillment of the plot to use federal might to rig the election in favour of my opponent , ” she added.<br />
<br />
<br />
When contacted , the Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command , Andrew Aniamaka, said he was unaware of the application by the PDP senatorial candidate for police protection .<br />
<br />
<br />
Aniamaka also denied Oboro ’ s claims that the police in the state were working to rig the election in favour of the ruling APC.<br />
<br />
<br />
According to him , the police will remain neutral while supporting the Independent National Electoral Commission for a credible election.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ The police cannot be partisan ; and we are not . The police can only assist INEC for credible elections in Delta State . We have pledged our loyalty to the people of Delta by providing them security.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ There are processes expected to be followed for you to be given police escorts .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ I am not aware that Hon. Evelyn Oboro has made request to the command for provision of police escort .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ We have nothing against her or against her party . The only thing we are asking is that we should follow the process . We are servants of the people and we will do everything humanly possible to serve the people, ” he said .<br />
But Omo - Agege , while reacting to Oboro ’ s claims , described the allegations as false.<br />
<br />
<br />
In a statement signed by Godwin Anaughe , Director , Communications and Strategy, Senator Ovie Omo - Agege Campaign Organisation , the senator said , “ First , we are not in the business of killing people. We value human life and as a devout Christian , Senator Omo - Agege will never contemplate or condone such an evil act .<br />
<br />

“ No such threat was made on behalf of Senator Ovie Omo - Agege by anyone in our campaign or a proxy at any time on Hon. Evelyn Oboro.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ We have no reason whatsoever to resort to threats of any sort against Oboro or her supporters . We will win fairly at the polls .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ Secondly, Senator Ovie Omo - Agege does not have any say in the internal workings of the Nigeria Police and as such could not have instigated any redeployment of officers in the Force if at all any such exercise has taken place.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ All we expect the police or any security agency to do is to create an enabling environment for all candidates and parties to participate in the elections , and this include , but not limited to rooting out those thugs recruited and sponsored by Evelyn Oboro . ”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected what it described as attempts by President Muhammadu Buhari to foist an illegal Chief Justice on the nation while the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen is still in office.<br />
<br />
President Buhari had, on Friday, sworn in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, following the suspension of Justice Onnoghen, on the advice of the Code of Conduct Tribunal.<br />
<br />
In a statement by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the main opposition party said such impunity cannot stand.<br />
<br />
Insisting Nigeria is governed by law and not by the whims and caprices of a dictatorial leader, the PDP accused President Buhari of wanting to ruin the country, vowing however that the PDP would not allow him.<br />

The party called on Nigerians to reject what it termed incendiary move by President Buhari to forcefully suspend the constitution, annex the judicial arm of government and open the nation up for full-blown totalitarianism to achieve his self-succession bid, having realized that he cannot win in the 2019 general election.<br />
<br />
It said: “President Buhari’s action in attempting to unilaterally appoint a Chief Justice and foist him on our country is a direct invitation to anarchy, national confusion and a monumental crisis capable of derailing our democracy and destroying our corporate existence as a nation.<br />
<br />
“It is now clear to the world that President Buhari, in his selfish self-succession bid, is out to cause mayhem in our nation and truncate the smooth conduct of the 2019 election, not minding the consequential human and material losses.<br />
<br />
“There can be no two Chief Justices of Nigeria. Our constitution is clear on how a Chief Justice is appointed and removed as such does not lie on the prerogative of the President.<br />
<br />
“As such, we urge all Nigerians and the international community to recognize only Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“Furthermore, the PDP invites the international community and particularly the United States and the United Kingdom to note this assault on the judiciary is geared towards subverting the 2019 general elections and as such immediately list President Buhari and APC leaders for proposed sanctions on election riggers and perpetrators of violence in the general election.<br />
<br />
“The world already knows how the Buhari administration has trying to compromise the electoral process, including the refusal to sign the amendment to the Electoral Act, as well as the foisting of Mr. President’s relation by marriage, Mrs. Amina Zakari to coordinate the collation of Presidential election results.<br />
<br />
“The PDP wants President Buhari to know this nation belongs to all Nigerians. Our nation is a democratic state governed by the constitution and the law and Nigerians will never allow anybody to appropriate rulership to himself outside the dictates of the law.<br />
<br />
“President Buhari tried to forcefully remove the leadership of the National Assembly and fail.<br />
<br />
“His attempt to annex the judiciary and impose a Chief Justice that will surrender the judiciary to him is also already dead on arrival.<br />
<br />
“Finally, the PDP calls on the National Assembly to immediately reconvene and proceed with legislative actions against President Buhari for this gross misconduct”.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned three suspected fraudsters and their company before Justice Z. B. Abubakar of the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna on two counts of conspiracy and fraud.<br />
<br />
<br />
Two Access Bank staff, Benjamin Soile and Okoro Junior were said to have connived with Abubakar Mustapha and Abueleven Limited to defraud one Sa ’ adatu Dasuki of £ 100 , 000.<br />
<br />
<br />
Dasuki alleged that in September 2018 , Mustapha introduced the bankers to her as bureaux de change operators , and convinced her to transfer the money from her Access Bank account to his own account in the same bank with an understanding that he would credit her account with the naira equivalent.<br />
<br />
<br />
However , the £ 100 , 000 was transferred to a Barclays Bank account of one Celestine Tagbo on the instruction of one Alhassan Habib , both resident in London , without the knowledge or consent of Dasuki.<br />

<br />
Sensing that she had been duped , Dasuki reportedly demanded a refund of the money , but Okoro instead credited her account with N 11 , 562 , 500 on September 12 and 13 , 2018 , but reversed the said transaction.<br />
<br />
<br />
The acting EFCC spokesman , Tony Orilade , in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said the accused pleaded ‘ not guilty ’ to the charges and the prosecuting counsel, J . Saidi , urged the court to fix a date for commencement of trial.<br />
<br />
<br />
Counsel to the first defendant , P. I . Kalu , informed the court of his client ’ s bail application dated January 23 , 2018.<br />
<br />
<br />
In his ruling, Justice Abubakar granted bail to the defendants in the sum of N500 , 000 each and two sureties in like sum who must own landed properties within the jurisdiction of the court .<br />
<br />
<br />
One of the sureties must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 9.<br />
<br />
<br />
The case was thereafter adjourned to February 14 for hearing, and the defendants remanded in prison pending the perfection of the bail conditions.

Maj- Gen. Suleiman Kazaure , Director -General , National Youth Service Corps has advised corps members that would participate as ad - hoc staff during the general elections to be neutral and conscious of their safety.<br />
<br />
<br />
Kazaure gave the advice during a sensitisation visit to the participating corps members at the Rivers State University in Port Harcourt on Friday.<br />
<br />
<br />
The Independent National Electoral Commission would recruit corps members as ad - hoc staff for the 2019 general elections .<br />
<br />
<br />
He urged them not to engage in any form of sharp practices that could compromise the election and expose them to avoidable risk.<br />

“ You must remain neutral , avoid taking anything from politicians and render your service without compromising integrity and the election.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ You must shun any form of sharp practices at the polling unit to be free from unwarranted attacks, ” he said.<br />

According to Kazaure , The Nigerian Police Force , Army , Department of State Service and other security agencies will be deployed on the election day.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ So , you must appear neat in your uniform and carry your NYSC Identification Card , for easy identification should the unexpected happen.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ Don ’ t argue with anyone and if there is crisis , run to the nearest police station or security post , ” he said.<br />
<br />
<br />
The NYSC DG told the corps members that their voluntary participation should not be for personal interest but in the interest of the nation.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ A set of corps members did the scheme proud during the 2011 elections , and I trust that you will do better than them, ” he said.<br />
<br />
<br />
Mr Etim Umoh , INEC Administrative Secretary in Rivers, said the commission would do everything possible to protect the corps members .<br />
<br />
<br />
“ We are liaising with security agencies to ensure both the upland and coastal areas of the state are well secured.<br />
<br />
<br />
“ Don ’ t create any loophole in the polling unit and expose yourself to danger , as you must be transparent , and not be partisan to avoid instant reaction , ” he said .<br />

<br />
Umoh disclosed that the commission had an insurance cover for the corps members .<br />

Scientists have developed a new drug which shows potential to halt cancer cells’ growth by stunting the cells’ biological clock.<br />
<br />
The findings from scientists at the U.S. University of Southern California (USC), Michelson Centre for Convergent Bioscience and Nagoya University’s Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules in Japan have advanced a burgeoning area of research — turning the body’s circadian rhythms against cancer.<br />
<br />
The study was published in the journal Science Advances.<br />
<br />
Scientists conducted research on human kidney cancer cells and on acute myeloid leukemia in mice.<br />
<br />

<br />
As disrupting sleep and other elements of humans’ circadian rhythm can harm health, the same is true for the circadian clock of cells themselves.<br />
<br />
By disturbing the circadian clock of cancer cells, they could be potentially hurt or killed, according to the research.<br />
<br />
Scientists found that a molecule named GO289 targets an enzyme that controls the cell’s circadian rhythm.<br />
<br />
This drug-protein interaction then disrupts the functions of four other proteins that are important for cell growth and survival.<br />
<br />
GO289 can jam the cogs of the cell’s circadian clock, slowing its cycles, with little impact to healthy cells, according to the research.<br />
<br />
“In some cancers, the disease takes over the circadian clock mechanism and uses it for the evil purpose of helping itself grow,” said Steve Kay, Director of Convergent Biosciences at the USC Michelson Centre.<br />
<br />
“With GO289, we can interfere with those processes and stop the cancer from growing.”<br />
<br />
Kay expressed optimism about the findings. “This could become an effective new weapon that kills cancer,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday assured that his administration will continue to persuade other countries to repatriate stolen funds and assets from Nigerian.<br />
<br />
He made the promise while speaking during the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential campaign at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu State.<br />
<br />
He said, “Whoever is caught, we will persuade the governments to bring back the money and we will invest it in infrastructures.”<br />
<br />
Stressing that handling corruption in Nigeria under democracy is very difficult, he said that he is doing his best under the rule of law.<br />
<br />
Noting that he doesn’t have new promises to make, he said that his administration has honestly made progress with the promises made in 2015.<br />

The President recalled how the People’s Democratic Party wasted the resources that accrued to the nation for sixteen years.<br />
<br />
According to him, more money would have to be devoted to education as one of the best ways to solve the problems of Nigeria.<br />

He said that his administration has made progress in agriculture as many Nigerians are now eating Nigerian rice, with Nigerian farmers prospering from it.<br />
<br />
The President also pointed out that if roads, railway lines and power are developed, Nigerians will focus on their businesses and won’t even mind who is ruling at the centre.<br />
<br />
“Let us work hard to develop our resources.” he stated<br />
<br />
The National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomhole said that it was important to give President Buhari another four years in other to continue the good work he started.<br />
<br />
He said that those shouting rigging are the investors of rigging<br />
<br />
Oshiomhole, who noted that Obasanjo is at the forefront of those shouting rigging, said that he has never won any election in the South West part of the country that he came from.<br />
<br />
He said that anybody who believes in Buhari should also vote for other APC candidates in the state.<br />
<br />
Oshiomhole said that it would amount to anti-party activities for anyone to say ‘vote for Mr. President this way and vote for others that way”<br />
<br />
Enugu State, he said, is not the birthright of any political party and that it is already tired of the opposition party.<br />
<br />
The President’s records and achievements, he said, are already speaking in his favour.<br />
<br />
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed to the crowd that the government at its next meeting will approve railway project from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, which will also benefit the state.<br />
<br />
He also told them that the fastest route for the South East to rule the country is by voting for another four years for President Buhari, pointing out that Vice President Atiku Abubakar will not leave the stage after four years if voted in as President.<br />

The Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu on Thursday said the Swiss Government has returned about $1.040billion looted by the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha and his family members to Nigeria since 1999.<br />
<br />
He also said there is need for an effective international collaboration by law enforcement agencies to combat corruption in the country.<br />
<br />
Magu made the disclosures in a presentation at the International Association of Anti-Corruption Authorities, IAACA, in Vienna, Austria.<br />
<br />
He said the cost of corruption was enormous and needed a broader approach to be tackled.<br />
<br />
The excerpts of Magu’s submission were made available to newsmen by the Acting Head of Media and Publicity of EFCC, Mr. Tony Orilade.<br />

Magu said: “Successes recorded in recovery of stolen assets have been achieved through Memoranda of Understanding, MoU signed between Nigeria and several countries including Switzerland, the United Kingdom, UK, the United Arab Emirates, UAE, and the United States, US, in line with Article 57 paragraph 5 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, UNCAC.<br />
<br />
“The UK government returned stolen funds to Nigeria in the cases of Dariye and Alamieyeseigha, with over 5 million pounds recovered from the former Bayelsa State governor in 2012.<br />
<br />
“In the case of Joshua Dariye, a former Governor of Plateau State in Nigeria, the British government also returned £48,000 to Nigeria in fulfillment of the UK’s commitments “under Chapter V of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.<br />
<br />
“In 1999, the Swiss authorities pursuant to a request for mutual legal assistance, returned about $723m to Nigeria.”<br />
<br />
“A tripartite MoU between the Swiss government, the World Bank and Nigerian government, also led to the return of additional $320 million Abacha loot.<br />
<br />
“Other classes of recoveries made by the EFCC included whistle blowers cash recoveries, subsidy payment cash recoveries, third party cash recovery for NNPC, FIRS, NPA, AMCON and Banks.<br />
<br />
“In 2017, EFCC made a total recovery of N473, 065,195,977.50, $142,504,121.12, and most of the recoveries, were non-conviction based asset recovery.”<br />
<br />
He listed some of them to include Real Estates belonging to Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former Petroleum Minister and her associates; $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23,218,000 recovered in an apartment at Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos in 2017; $9,772,800 and another sum of £74,000 cash in Kaduna, belonging to Andrew Yakubu, a former Group General Manager of NNPC in 2017.”<br />
<br />
Magu called for more international collaboration and synergy on repatriation of stolen wealth.<br />
<br />
“Corruption is acknowledged to have been an impediment to sustainable development in Africa and the cost is so enormous that there is an urgent need for international collaboration for success to be achieved,” he said.<br />
<br />
According to him, though the international community has created legal and institutional framework for the prevention and recovery of proceeds of corruption, recovery of stolen assets stashed away in foreign lands still remained a major issue to be tackled.”

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has taken his campaign train to Kaduna state where a mammoth crowd who chanted “Atiku, o-yo-yo” welcomed him.<br />

The Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna state went agog as hundreds of thousands of PDP faithful welcomed Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate to the state.<br />

In the entourage includes, restricted to, former Governor of Kaduna State, Ahmed Makarfi, Senate President and campaign DG, Dr. Bukola Saraki, PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who is fondly called the Turakin Adamawa.<br />

Nigerians who were present did not believe their eyes as the mammoth crowd trouped out in their numbers to chant praises of the Presidential candidate under whose watch the GSM was brought into Nigeria. The crowd was highly ecstatic as the candidate reeled out his plans to get Nigeria working again. In his speech, he attacked hunger and what he described as “poverty mentality of the APC, which has led Nigeria into recession.”<br />

Alhaji Ahmed Makarfi who was also present, beckoned on the multitude present to support Atiku and the PDP at all cost for a better economy, better security and better business environment. The Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) on Thursday maintained Hon. Ladi Adebutu is its authentic and legitimate governorship in Ogun State for the March 2 gubernatorial polls.<br />
<br />
The party urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to save itself from unnecessary controversies and immediately reflects Adebutu as PDP candidate in the Gateway state in compliance with the judgment of the Court of Appeal of December 18, 2018.<br />
<br />
It also advised party members, supporters, voters and the public to ignore anything to the contrary.<br />
<br />
This was contained in a statement by National Publicity Secretary and Director, Media and Publicity, PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Kola Ologbondiyan.<br />

The party said: “The Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) hereby informs the general public, security agencies, all electoral organs, observers and particularly, its teeming supporters in Ogun state that its candidate in the March 2, 2019 election in Ogun state remains Ladi Adebutu.<br />
<br />
“The PDP cautions the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to insulate the commission from unnecessary controversies by immediately obeying the judgment of the Court of Appeal of December 18, 2018, and without further delay reflect Hon. Ladi Adebutu’s name on the ballot, in the interest of a hitch free and peaceful election in Ogun state.<br />
<br />
“The PDP states that Hon. Ladi Adebutu’s name was duly and statutorily submitted to INEC after he won the governorship primary conducted by the National Working Committee (NWC), the only body empowered by law to conduct such primaries.<br />
<br />
“The PDP has not substituted his nomination with anybody and such is not in our contemplation.<br />
<br />
“The PDP charges the INEC Chairman to note that since the ruling of the Court of Appeal validating Hon. Ladi Adebutu as the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun state, no other court, not even the Supreme Court has over turned that extant ruling.<br />
<br />
“INEC is therefore compelled to obey the law. It cannot choose for itself which judgment to obey and cannot operate in waiting, anticipation or contemplation of a non-existent consideration in the conduct of the Ogun governorship election.”<br />
<br />
The party described Senator Buruji Kashamu as an imposter, saying he cannot fly its flag at the polls.<br />
<br />
The PDP insisted: “Moreover, the PDP holds that Senator Buruji cannot under any imagination be the governorship candidate of the PDP in Ogun state.<br />
<br />
“He is not a member of our party; he did not participate in our Ogun state governorship primary and has no connection whatsoever in our governorship nomination process at any level for that matter.<br />
<br />
“INEC cannot go to the streets to pick a candidate for our party. It must, therefore, in compliance with the extant judgment of the Court of Appeal, immediately reflect Ladi Adebutu’s name in the ballot, otherwise Nigerians will have no other option than to conclude that Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has become compromised to cause confusion and anarchy in Ogun state.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is too late for any candidate to withdraw from contesting any position in the upcoming elections.<br />
<br />
INEC said this while reacting to the withdrawal of Oby Ezekwesili as presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN)<br />
<br />
Ezekwesili announced her withdrawal on Thursday, saying she wanted to give room for a coalition against candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC).<br />
<br />
But reacting via a statement, Rotimi Oyekanmi, chief press secretary to the INEC chairman, said November 17 was the last date for withdrawal.<br />
<br />
The statement read: “It is impossible for any presidential candidate to withdraw from the race now. According to the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2019 General Elections, the last day for withdrawal by candidates or replacement of withdrawn candidates by political parties was 17th November, 2018 for Presidential and National Assembly Elections.<br />

“The deadline for Ezekwesili or any candidate in that category to withdraw or be replaced has passed.”<br />
<br />
Section 35 of the electoral act, which gives deadline from withdrawal from any election, states: “A candidate may withdraw his candidature by notice in writing signed by him and delivered by himself to the political party that nominated him for the election and the political party shall convey such withdrawal to the Commission not later than 45 clays to the election.”

The presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Dr. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has announced her withdrawal from the presidential race.<br />
<br />
She however, opted to help build a coalition to defeat the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party in the February 16, 2019 election.<br />
<br />
A statement issued on Thursday morning by the spokesperson for Obiageli Ezekwesili Presidential Campaign Organisation, Ozioma Ubabukoh, said she took the decision after “extensive discussions with Nigerians at home and the Diaspora.”<br />
<br />
According to her, the action was also prompted by an examination of the country’s electoral environment sequel to the 2019 presidential debate of Saturday, January 19, 2019.<br />

The statement reads, “This decision followed extensive consultations with leaders from various walks of life across the country over the past few days. I deem it necessary for me to focus on helping to build a veritable coalition to ensure a viable alternative to the #APCPDP in the forthcoming elections.<br />

“It is my ardent belief that this broad coalition for a viable alternative has now become more than ever before, an urgent mission for and on behalf of Nigerian citizens. I have therefore chosen to lead the way in demonstrating the much needed patriotic sacrifice for our national revival and redirection.<br />
<br />
“I wish to state that over the past three months, I have been in private, but extended talks with other candidates to birth a coalition that would allow Nigerians to exercise their choice without feeling helplessly encumbered by the evil twins of #APCPDP.<br />
<br />
“While the deliberations continued, I never hesitated for a moment in my willingness and determination to sacrifice my candidacy in order to facilitate the emergence of the envisaged strong and viable alternative that Nigerians could identify with in our collective search for a new beginning.<br />
<br />
“My commitment to this promising political recalibration has been consistent and in consonance with my agreement, at the request of candidates under the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together arrangement in 2018, when I consented to supervise the internal selection process as an outside observer passionate about building an alternative force.<br />
“However, despite resistance from the ACPN on these and other issues, I have decided that it is now necessary to show by action and example my determination on this issue by stepping down my candidacy so as to focus squarely on building the coalition to a logical conclusion.<br />
<br />
“We have no right to allow citizens give in to despair. We will #Fight4Naija together and prove to all that the mess, which the political class has now become, should not be allowed to destroy our spirits and nation. We are also determined to ensure that the message keeps resonating that our beloved country deserves better, and that we will get the best that we deserve.<br />
<br />
“From last year, when I joined the presidential race, I made it clear to Nigerians that the country has always had a 20-year cycle of change – 1958, 1979, and 1999. As such, 2019 begins another 20-year cycle, and together with all Nigerians of good will, I stand ready to play my part to ensure that we do not miss this golden opportunity to sing a new song. There is no more time to waste. Let’s get to work!”<br />

Ubabukoh thanked Nigerians, including campaign donors and volunteers, who supported Ezekwesili, saying that “every money donated to the campaign and funds spent will be accounted for in the coming days.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission has told the National Council of State that it has concluded the identification and recruitment of 814,453 ad hoc staff for the forthcoming general elections.<br />
<br />
According to the commission, arrangement for the timely receipt and speedy distribution of sensitive materials had also been made.<br />
<br />
INEC also expressed its commitment to the provision of a level-playing field to its “numerous publics and a qualitative, seamless and ‘hassle-free’ electoral services for the electorate in all our actions and operations.”<br />
<br />
The chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, stated this in his presentation to the National Council of State at the Presidential Villa, in Abuja on Tuesday. The presentation slide was given to journalists on Wednesday.<br />

Yakubu said, “The 2015 general election was a watershed in the history of our democracy. INEC is fully aware of the enormity of conducting the 2019 general elections and will spare no effort at safeguarding the integrity and credibility of our elections and the consolidation of our democracy.<br />

“The identifications and recruitment of 814,453 ad hoc staff for the election is concluded and training will commence on January 23 (Wednesday).<br />
<br />
“The 2019 general elections will be the largest single-day peacetime logistics and security undertaken by the commission since 1999 with 84 million voters, 91 political parties, 23, 213 candidates vying for 1,558 positions, involving over 814,000 electoral officials.<br />
<br />
“The conduct and delivery of credible elections by safeguarding and defending the transparency and integrity of the electoral process is a sacred duty that the commission will discharge honourably within constitutional and legal framework in order to nurture, sustain and continuously deepen democracy in our country.”<br />
<br />
The commission recalled that the Continuous Voter Registration was undertaken between April 27, 2017 and August 31, 2018 in its 774 Local Government Area Offices and designated centres nationwide on continuous basis as prescribed by law.<br />
<br />
“At the end of the exercise and following laid down procedures, the commission verified and confirmed 14,283,734 new registrants. The total number of registered voters for the 2019 general elections is 84,004,084.”

The Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail tracks will be ready in February, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Managing Director Fidet Okhiria said yesterday.<br />
<br />
Okhiria, who spoke at Ijoko in Ogun State during the routine inspection of the $1.7 billion project, said by February 7, the corporation will begin a test-run of the tracks.<br />
<br />
The managing director said the first phase of the project, which is meant to link Lagos with Abeokuta, is on course and will be achieved within the next 10 days.<br />
<br />
According to him, the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), has completed the laying of tracks from Kajola (Kilometre 41, and Abeokuta, Kilometre 79), while efforts to get the project to Iju in Lagos will be achieved by February 7.<br />
<br />

He said: “The contractors have said their equipment could lay 1.5 kilometres per day. That means they could achieve the 10-kilometre distance between Kajola and Iju within seven days, and we can start the test-run of the tracks, latest by February 7.”<br />
<br />
Okhiria expressed satisfaction with the speed of the contractors, adding that with the civil works between Kajola and Iju completed, work would go on unhindered on the laying of tracks.<br />
<br />
The NRC chief said the Federal Government had fully paid the compensations on all the property acquired for the project, adding that this facilitated the speedy pace of the project.<br />
<br />
He said the transparency in the payment of the compensation engendered the prevailing peaceful atmosphere surrounding the execution of the project.<br />
<br />
The managing director said none of the contractors’ workers had been molested since the project started in 2017.<br />
<br />
Okhiria, who was accompanied by reporters and other members of the monitoring committee, rode on two first-class coaches on the completed section of the rail line between Kajola and Abeokuta.<br />
<br />
The NRC chief noted that when completed, the train would make travelling easy and fast – one hour – for passengers plying the route between Lagos and Abeokuta, or vice versa.<br />
<br />
“With the speed of the train calibrated at 150 kilometres per hour, the speed train can make the 156 kilometres between Abeokuta and Lagos in one hour. This would help to redistribute congestion in our urban centres as more people would be able to live in one state and work in another,” he said.

Chelsea have confirmed that Gonzalo Higuain has joined the club from Juventus on an initial loan deal with an option to buy this summer.<br />
<br />
Higuain joins the Blues after spending the first half of the campaign on loan at AC Milan, where he scored eight goals.<br />
<br />
The forward now moves to Chelsea on loan, although the club has an option to buy for £31.6 million ($41m), Juventus confirmed .<br />
<br />
Juventus also confirmed that there is an option to extend the duration of the loan until June 2020 for a fee of £15.7 million ($20.5m).<br />
<br />
With the timing of the move, the Argentine is not eligible to feature against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup semi-final on Thursday.<br />

"I now hope I can give back that trust Chelsea have shown me out on the pitch. I can’t wait to start and I hope to adapt as soon as possible."<br />
<br />
Higuain was on loan with AC Milan following a stint with Juventus that began in 2016 after shining under current Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri at Napoli.<br />
<br />
Under Sarri, Higuain finished as top scorer in Serie A with 36 goals in 2015-16, equalling the Italian top-flight record in the process.<br />
<br />
"Gonzalo was our number one target in this transfer window and arrives with a proven record at the highest level," said Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia.<br />
<br />
"He has previously worked with Maurizio to great effect and is familiar with how the coach likes to play."

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Mr Omoyele Sowore, has promised to pay workers 100,000 as minimum wage if elected as the next president of the nation on Feb. 16.<br />

Sowore made the pledge at a town hall meeting tagged: ‘The Candidates’ organised by the MacArthur Foundation in collaboration with NTA and DARIA media in Abuja.<br />
<br />
He said that his administration would address the menace of ghost workers by installing technologies that would daily capture fingerprints of workers and the hours spent at work.<br />
<br />
He also said that he would ensure leakages were effectively blocked and would enthrone proper management of resources in the country if elected.<br />
<br />
The AAC presidential candidate said that his administration would ensure efficient collection of taxes, and that there would be no sacred cows.<br />
<br />
According to him, most companies in Nigeria collect tax from workers but do not remit to the government, while others are under remitting.<br />

On power supply, Sowore said when elected, he would bring in solar panels that would generate up to 4500 megawatts of electricity across the country in less than a year.<br />

He said there were investors looking for where to build power stations, saying that all that was lacking in Nigeria was good leadership.<br />

Sowore said rather than selling national power installations, license would be given to investors to come in and generate power.<br />
<br />
His running mate, Mr Rabiu Rufai, said the AAC would pay a living wage and not just a minimum wage to the Nigerian workers.<br />
<br />
Rufai said that an average Nigerian worker spent at least N1,000 daily on transportation.<br />
<br />
He said that the proposed N27,000 by the Federal Government was not enough as workers needed to feed themselves and family, pay schools fees, rents and make some savings as well.(NAN)

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Concerned Fulani leaders have expressed disagreement with the recent endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, MACBAN.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The leaders said the laws guiding the affairs of the association do not allow it to dabble into partisan politics.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Chairman of the concerned Fulani leaders, Alhaji Walid Jibrin, at a press conference in Kaduna on Tuesday, said neither the executives nor the national chairman of the MACBAN can take a major decision without consulting and seeking the consent of members of the Board of Trustees and patrons of the association.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said, “Such decision taken recently by the association without the knowledge of the BOT and patrons and majority of registered members is anarchy and disrespect and amounts to dragging our paramount ruler into politics.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Jibrin who doubles as the Sarkin Fulan in Dangi Nasarawa, pointed out that the Miyetti Allah owes the Sultan of Sokoto, Emir of Kano, Emir of Katsina, Emir of Zazzau and Lamido of Adamawa apologies for being ignorant of the rules guiding the association and for not running the MACBAN for the full benefit of members.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The Sarkin Yakin Dangawa Yaan Tumaki of Katsina, also disclosed that concerned Fulani groups and Ardos and members of MACBAN who are not in support of the Miyeti Allah’s decision would soon meet to counter the stand.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“I want Nigerians to know that we have over 25 Fulani associations in Nigeria that are fully registered and over 500 categories of Fulani race living in Nigeria with even some who are unable to speak Fulfulde due to the general global changes like the current global climate change affecting the world,” he said.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Jibrin said representatives of these groups will attend the forthcoming Fulani conference and “will tell the world their stand in the forthcoming election by choosing their presidential choice who is ready to satisfy the demand of the Fulani and who will settle the feud of farmer-communities with herdsmen.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said: “I, therefore, call on the Fulani never to be deceived again by anybody no matter how highly placed. Fulani must talk with one voice among our over 6,000 voters in Nigeria. I call on Miyetti Allah not to further add fuel to the fire.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said associations “should rather be fighting for Fulani who have no land for rearing, no water ponds, no functional nomadic schools, no cattle path which are now blocked and should pave way for Fulani to live peacefully with all tribes in Nigeria.”</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The youth group said the latest missive in circulation entitled “Points For Concern And Action by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo” was off-point and should be discarded in its entirety.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Speaking at a news conference in Lagos on Tuesday, the National President of the group, Kola Salawu, said Nigerians needed to forgive Obasanjo for the eight years he wasted as a civilian president and for the wrong path he set the nation on.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Salawu said the Yoruba race was deeply ashamed that a so-called elder from its ethnic stock decided to remain in a muddy gutter by penning such nauseating content.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He claimed that Obasanjo sowed the seed for extremism that birthed terrorism.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The youth leader said, “In Yoruba land, we take pride in answering our names. Only a bastard will deny his name. In practical terms this translates into us standing by our decisions and actions, irrespective of what outcomes they produced. Where the outcomes are good our head swell with the accompanying accolades; where the results of our actions are undesirable, we accept responsibility with honour and explore how to make amends so that we remain an integral part of the society. Of course, in the ancient past, where the failing is too grievous and involves a king that remained recalcitrant the relevant powers will have to present him, with an empty calabash.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“This is a level of honour Obasanjo has never possessed and is incapable of learning. Had he such honour he would have accepted that the current insecurity he ranted is the outcome of his misrule that is only now yielding fruits. The poverty that makes it possible for terrorists, militants and separatists to gain new recruits was first instituted under his watch as president. The extremism that the nation today grapple with first surfaced under him with some states declaring Sharia rule, which was the incentive that made terrorists started demanding nationwide strict implementation Sharia.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“In the entire eight years he held office, Obasanjo was in mortal fear of being overthrown because of the unpopularity of his government. His solution to this was to destroy the military in the belief that there would be no way to plot a coup against him if there is no virile military. In addition to embarking on massive sacks and purge that deprived the military establishment of crucial institutional memory, he also ensured that the military inventory was depleted without replenishment or procurement to make sure that the military was incapacitated.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The destruction of the military armory at Ikeja Cantonment about this time of the year in 2002 has now been confirmed to be part of Obasanjo’s desperation to de-tooth the military. A military plane crash that killed a dozen generals under Obasanjo’s watch in 2006 is equally put down to part of his obsession to gelatinize the military. He seemed to have succeeded with it.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The taint on the military from Obasanjo’s directives for troops to disregard rules of engagement in Odi and Zak-Ibiam remains an obstacle to the military. Even when their recent and ongoing operations meet the global standards for the rules of engagement, the stain from the Obasanjo years remains a perspective from which the military is perceived. This affects the ability of the military to procure arms when they need it and the same tyrant under whose watch this happened is today playing the saint.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“In essence, Obasanjo sowed the seed for extremism that birthed terrorism. He backed this up by ensuring that the military was emasculated and unable to respond to the threat he has created. What has saved Nigeria from Obasanjo’s evil intent was the timely turnaround being witnessed under President Buhari, who has high regards for institutional memory in the military.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The whole of Nigeria became his enemy and he has never lost on any perceived opportunity to exact vengeance on all citizens. May we refresh our memory that Obasanjo reportedly trained 1000 killer snipers abroad with the intention of using them to assassinate those who stand in the way of his ambition. These snipers formed part of the pioneer team of killers that have remained loose in the country till date.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“The outcome of that election produced Mallam Umaru Yar’Adua as president and it was a matter of months before Obasanjo started wishing him dead because he turned out not to be the stooge that Obasanjo expected. Yar’Adua’s demise paved way for Goodluck Jonathan, whom Obasanjo did much to mislead and abandoned after he incurred the anger of Nigerians pleasing the former President. If Obasanjo thought he would have a pliant President Buhari following his opposition of Jonathan he was in for a rude shock.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“If Obasanjo supported Yar’Adua and later disowned him over ill health, supported Jonathan and later disowned him for consulting others and supported Buhari and now disowning him for not bending to his wishes, then maybe it is not these president that something is wrong with. The problem is Obasanjo. He feigns support for successive presidents in the hope of being able to use them as puppets and continue as a life president while they act as the symbolic leaders. Such deviousness is not the Yoruba way because it is without honour.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“We do not want to go into the past of an Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), whom Obasanjo convinced Nigerians to be a very corrupt person. The same person God will not forgive him for forgiving. He has turned around to tell Nigerians that this is the same person to vote in the hope of acquiring a new puppet. A Yoruba elder will not be caught doing such, it amounts to being incitement, which is unbecoming of anyone that has become a grandfather.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“We apologize for the eight wasted years of Obasanjo as a civilian president and for the wrong path he set the country on, which we are now all trying to correct. We apologize for his callous thinking that had projected that Buhari would die in office. We apologize for the unbecoming tantrum he has been throwing for not having his way as a puppet master of successive presidents. We apologize to you all Nigerians because what Obasanjo is does not reflect who the Yoruba are.”</div>
