Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers attacked three persons in their motor car, along Kaduna railway station on Friday night, inflicting serious injuries on one, abducted the other person, and killed the third person instantly.
A source who refused to disclose his name due to security reasons, said the three young men were on their way after attending a meeting with the Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Yusuf Zailani when the gunmen opened fire on them.
According to the source, “as they were approaching the rail station at Rigasa, the kidnappers opened fire at their vehicle, and killed Rabiu Auwal, while El-Khaddab Arewa is in critical condition in an undisclosed hospital in Kaduna. Sani Khalil Rigasa is believed to have been abducted by the kidnappers.”
The remains of late Rabiu Auwal had since been laid to rest this morning, Saturday.

There have been reports that Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) met with former president, Goodluck Jonathan, in Abuja.
The purpose of that meeting was apparently to sound out Jonathan ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Jonathan was elected president in 2011 and lost to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
However, there is talk that he is still qualified to run having only spent one term of four years in office.

Ilemona Onoja, a lawyer based in Abuja, does not agree with that.
Onoja believes the constitution does not support a Jonathan presidency.
In June 2018, Buhari signed into law a bill that limits a vice-president or deputy governor who completes the terms of their principals, to seeking reelection only once more.
Onoja feels that even if the constitution has to be amended for the sole purpose, “it’s not a small matter. They need 24 states. They don’t have it.”
According to him, “they are visiting GEJ to enable them to penetrate the Niger Delta.”
Onoja, a former spokesperson of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki Campaign Organization (ABSCO), also feels that even Jonathan himself will not agree to run under APC.
“It won’t even work. I don’t even think he himself will agree.
“Far too many major political players suddenly get their aspirations terminated, even within the APC,” he added.

Residents of Ogun State have cried out to President Muhammadu Buhari, saying they were being killed by Fulani herdsmen and officers of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
They called on the President to put an end to incessant killings and youths unemployment.
At a town hall meeting organised by the Minister for Mines and Steels Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, in Ijebu-Ode, Ilaro and Abeokuta on Friday, youths, women and elders of Ogun State bared their minds on ways to prevent a repeat of the recent #EndSARS protest.
While declaring the meetings open, Adegbite told the people that President Buhari had sent his appointees back to their home states to feel the pulse of Nigerians in order to forestall a repeat of youths restiveness that could give birth to carnage, killings, arson and breakdown of law and order.

In their reactions, the people lamented the spate of killings in Ogun State, especially in the border communities, blaming unemployment for the recent crisis.
Ogun indigenes also decried the deplorable conditions of federal roads in the state, while adding that the people are hungry as a result of border closure.
In his words, Adebiyi Adeyinka Tajudeen from Yewa South said customs officers have been killing Ogun people like goats, all in the name of chasing suspected smugglers.
Tajudeen alleged that many have been killed this year by the customs officers, begging the President to stop NCS officers from shooting within the communities if they fail to seize contraband at the borders.
Corroborating Tajudeen’s submission, one Hunponu Olamikan explained that Fulani herdsmen have made farming unattractive to the people of the Gateway State.
According to Olamilekan, herdsmen have continued to destroy farms as their cows graze on crops.
“After destroying our crops, we have no right to talk. If we talk, these Fulani herdsmen will kill us like goats. Recently, they killed a father, his wife and three children in Oja-Odan, Yewa North. This is getting too much and nobody is doing anything about it,” Olamilekan lamented.
In his words, the former Chairman of Imeko-Afon Local Government, Hon. Tosin Adeluyi, called on the Federal Government to see to the development of border areas, saying the agency put in charge of that responsibility has not been doing anything in Ogun State.
Adeluyi said unemployment is the root cause of all social vices, and charged governments at all levels to keep the youths off the streets by getting them gainfully employed.
Responding, the Minister assured the people that their requests would get to the President.
Adegbite said government would not rest until the excesses of customs officers in Ogun and Nigeria in general are addressed.
According to him, officers of the NCS need to be sensitised, stressing that “it is far better for a smuggler to escape than to kill an innocent soul.”
He revealed that the population of the nation is growing faster than the nation’s revenue, urging all Nigerians to be productive.

Seeing how God had helped me, I felt it was my responsibility to share my testimony with the world, so people could see the result of hard work. I was very vulnerable while writing the book and I believe it makes for an interesting read. It talks about my mistakes, failures and successes.

Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State, on Saturday, commiserated with former Senate Majority Leader, Mr Victor Ndoma-Egba over the death of his wife, Mrs Amaka Ndoma-Egba.
Ayade, in a statement by Christian Ita, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, in Calabar, expressed deep sadness over Amaka’s sudden transition.
According to him, her demise was yet another vicissitude to befall the former Senate Leader in recent times.
“Dear Victor, the death of your dear wife, is a severe blow on all of us who knew her, and a harder blow on you as her husband, friend and confidant.

“Words cannot adequately convey my heartfelt sorrow over Amaka’s death, for she was a kind and beautiful soul who spread love to all who encountered her,” he said.
The governor, however, urged Sen. Ndoma-Egba and his family to be consoled by the fact that the deceased selflessly and fervently served God and humanity during her salutary and impactful life on earth.
While praying to God to give Ndoma-Egba the fortitude to bear the loss, Ayade prayed to God to grant her soul eternal peace.

President-elect Joe Biden’s team is making a fundraising push for its transition operations as the General Services Administration has yet to ascertain Biden as the election winner — a move that would open up millions of dollars in federal money for the President-elect’s transition work.
The Biden transition team sent a grassroots fundraising plea to its supporter list on Friday, with the email stating, “Without ascertainment, we need to fund the transition ourselves, and that’s why we’re reaching out to you today.”
Congressionally appropriated transition funding is one of several key resources the Biden transition team is unable to tap into without ascertainment. The money allows for the incoming administration to fund its transition efforts, including paying for its staff and agency review teams.
Biden and his advisers have mounted a public pressure campaign for GSA Administrator Emily Murphy to formally recognize the election results and allow full transition planning to get underway, including access to classified intelligence briefings and coordination on distribution of an upcoming vaccine.

The transition team started its private fundraising efforts in June and has raised more than $10 million for the process so far, a source familiar with the fundraising efforts said. But the email sent Friday represents a new phase in the team’s fundraising process as it is now turning to grassroots donors in their push.
“Grassroots supporters like you made a Joe Biden presidency possible,” the fundraising email read. “And now we are counting on you once again to power us through this critical moment.”
Three Democratic bundlers also said they have recently received requests to raise more money for the transition operation as the GSA’s ascertainment is stalled. The maximum contribution to the transition is $5,000, significantly smaller than the $360,600 donation limits for the Biden Victory Fund in the general election.
“We need everyone to once again step up to help the Transition Team raise the resources it needs,” one fundraising email from Chris Korge, the national finance chair of the Democratic National Committee, reads.
The President-elect has said his team has not ruled out legal options but argued waging a legal fight may not considerably speed up the formal transition process.
“The Biden-Harris transition has been planning for months for all possible scenarios. While we wait for the GSA Administrator to uphold the will of the people and be a proper steward of taxpayer resources, we will execute on contingency plans, including continuing to solicit private funds to support transition planning,” a transition official said. “The nation faces too many challenges to not have a fully funded and smooth transition to prepare the President-elect and Vice President-elect to govern on Day One.”
Biden and his advisers have publicly pushed for the GSA to ascertain the election, saying it complicates their planning efforts as the President-elect looks to take office on January 20th.
“This isn’t a game of who gets to talk to whom. Our inability to start the informal agency review process has the potential to have real impacts across the country,” said Yohannes Abraham, a Biden transition adviser. “There’s no replacing the real-time information that can only come from the post-ascertainment environment that we should be in right now.”
After the 2000 election, the GSA held up transition funding and office space for George W. Bush until then-Vice President Al Gore conceded in December. At a news conference in November of that year, Dick Cheney, who led Bush’s transition before becoming vice president, said they would raise private money to fund their operations.

The Nigerian Law students have opened up on why they sued the Academic Staff Union of Universities and relevant ministries representing the Federal Government for the persistent strike which has led to the shutdown of various public universities since March 2020.
The students through the National President of the Law Students Association of Nigeria, Blessing Agbomhere, sought an award of N10bn as compensation for the violation of their rights to education for the period of about nine months that their public institutions of learning had been shut down.
The suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1551/2012 was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday.
Agbomhere, a final year Law student at Baze University, who is the sole petitioner, said he was mandated by a resolution of the Senate of LAWSAN to institute the suit in a representative capacity.

Joined as defendants are ASUU, ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, the Minister of Education, the Minister of Labour and Employment, the Attorney General of Federation   and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
Agbomhere, through his lawyer, Luqman Momodu, urged the court to, among others, declare that he is representing other students of his association, was entitled to right to education by virtue of Section 18(1), (2) and (3) of the Nigerian Constitution and Article 17(1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right (Ratification and Enforcement) Act Cap, A9 LFN, 2004.
He also asked the court to, in affirming his right to education, declare that the 3rd – 6th defendants (the ministers and the Federal Government) “are under obligation to create the necessary, supportive and conducive environment to ensure that the plaintiff enjoys a crisis free, peaceful and uninterrupted learning for the purpose of the promotion, enhancement and enjoyment of the plaintiff’s right to education.”
He also sought a declaration that “the indefinite strike action embarked upon by the 1st and 2nd defendants (ASUU and its President) since March 2020 leading to the closure of government owned universities which has detrimentally and negatively impacted on plaintiff’s learning and the smooth operation of academic calendar of universities is a brazen infraction of the plaintiff’s right to education”.
While he sought an order of perpetual injunction restraining ASUU “from further declaring or embarking on indefinite and incessant strike actions which might ultimately interfere, alter, derogate and undermine the Plaintiff’s right to education”, he also sought an order directing “3rd – 6th defendants to re-open government-owned universities forthwith and to honour their contractual agreements with the 1st and 2nd defendants in the overall interest of the plaintiff”.

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, has disclosed how Nigeria can solve problem of electricity.
Kyari speaking at a media interactive session with National Association of Energy Correspondents in Abuja, on Friday, said gas will help the country out of its major challenge of electricity.
He revealed that NNPC’s new focus is on gas development as the most resilient source of energy in the energy transition process.
Kyari said: “The only oil and gas that survived during the COVID-19 with minimal negative change was gas. Gas will help Nigeria out of its major challenge of electricity.”

He disclosed that the biggest challenge in Nigeria “is to take electricity to homes, industries and to use the resources we have to create that energy this country needs.”
According to him, Nigerians do not have electricity because of its inability to transmit it to those in need of it.
“Today for two reasons we are not getting electricity because the production is low and we are not able to transmit it to those who need it.
“That means there is bottle neck in transmission and distribution system,” he added.
The GMD noted that although Nigeria is known as an oil country it is more a gas nation than oil.
He, however, assured that NNPC would continue to work to ensure full gas development in the country for economic growth, NAN reports.
The lack of constant electricity is one of the problems affecting Nigerians today.

Counsel for some #EndSARS protesters in Lagos State, Mr Adesina Ogunlana, has said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will have to appear before the Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing the alleged killing of #EndSARS protesters by soldiers at the Lekki tollgate on the night of October 20.
Ogunlana said since the military claimed before the panel that their operation on that day was on the invitation of the governor, it would be important for the governor to appear before the panel, particularly to demonstrate his professed belief in the rule of law.
The Commander of 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island, Lagos, Brigadier General Ahmed Taiwo, had during his cross-examination on Saturday said the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, ordered the deployment of soldiers to the tollgate and other parts of the state that day following a request by the governor.
“He (the governor) called the Chief of Army Staff, following which 81 Division, Nigerian Army was ordered into phase four of internal security operation; the call was in the afternoon, before 4pm,” Taiwo told the panel.

Meanwhile, in an interview with one of our correspondents on Friday, the lawyer was asked if the appearance of the governor was important to the case of his clients and whether he would be pushing for the governor’s appearance before the panel.
Ogunlana said, “Of course, that is taken (sic). That person (Sanwo-Olu) will have to come; he’s a factor and he will come. He says he believes in the rule of law, his Attorney General, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), has come to appear before that panel to just make a short speech and to affirm that the Lagos State Government is indeed committed to unraveling the truth about what happened at Lekki on that day; and the military has mentioned him, so, he is a factor.”
While the Nigerian Army has consistently maintained that it did not kill any of the #EndSARS protesters, Ogunlana, on the other hand, insisted that “people died on my side.”
His clients, Kamsiyochukwu Perpetual, Dabira Ayuku and Samuel Isah, had in their individual affidavits on oath submitted to the retired Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel, stressed that soldiers and policemen shot and killed protesters.
Perpetual, in her petition, stated that she saw many dead bodies, including one with a bullet-torn head at Reddington Hospital, Lekki the morning after the shootings.
“The doctors refused us access to see the dead bodies. The media man waded in again and we could only see one of the dead bodies whose head was torn by (a) bullet fired to his head. He laid at the emergency unit. The doctor called the corpse ‘John Doe’ (sic).”
Ayuku, in her statement on oath, said, “The soldiers were asking people to run whilst they shot at them. I remember a particular soldier that kept dancing whilst he shot.”
Also, Isah said he witnessed how policemen allegedly gunned down a Nigerian flag-bearing youth.
He said, “That young man was hit by bullet in his head and died immediately, falling to the road with the Nigerian flag in his hand (sic).”
Isah said he managed to video the shootings by soldiers on his mobile and had submitted two footages to the panel.
But Taiwo, who testified for the Nigerian Army before the panel on November 14, said soldiers used only blank bullets, which they fired into the air.
“Blank expended ammunition contains only gunpowder, which just makes noise and a flash,” Taiwo said.
The general said a blank bullet “can do no damage to the flesh and you have nothing to fear except you take a rifle, put it against your eye and fire. Even if you put it against your skin and fire you will only have burn marks to show for it.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 143 new cases of COVID-19 in the country.
The NCDC in a tweet via its Twitter handle on Friday night, said a total of 9 States, including the FCT recorded the 143 infections in the last 24 hours.
According to the health agency, the 143 new cases brought the nation’s confirmed COVID-19 cases to 65,982.
It also noted that 1,165 people have died from complications resulting from the virus.

Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, has urged the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to call off the prolonged industrial action.
Sani was reacting to the latest decision reached by the Federal Government in a bid to pacify ASUU.
In an effort to end the seven months strike, the federal government had excluded academic staff from the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System, IPPIS, payment system.
This was disclosed by Senator Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, while addressing reporters after a meeting with the leadership of ASUU in Abuja on Friday.

The former Anambra Governor said the federal government had decided to shift grounds on the lingering issues, adding that an additional N15 billion for the revitalisation fund of public universities will be paid to the union.
According to Ngige, this money would make it a total of N35 billion committed as revitalisation fund by the government following the payment of N20 billion earlier.
However, Sani commended the federal government for its latest decision.
In a tweet, the former lawmaker urged the union to consider federal government’s latest offer.
Sani tweeted: “The reported exclusion of ASUU from IPPIS and the provision of N65Billion, if true is commendable.
“Its the triumph of resilience and as an uncompromising supporter of ASUU, I call on the academics to consider this and restore their services. And no breach please.”

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has refuted the allegation that a policeman attached to Femi Gbajabiamila killed a newspaper vendor in Abuja.
The incident occurred within the Three Arm Zone on Thursday when the House of Representatives Speaker’s convoy was on the move.
Gbajabiamila has confirmed the death, disclosing that the officer who fired the fatal shot has been suspended.
In a statement sent to newsmen on Friday, ASP Mariam Yusuf, Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, clarified that the security agent was not a police operative.

“Contrary to the misleading information, preliminary investigation into the unfortunate incident reveals that the security aide who shot at the vendor is not a member of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Yusuf added that the Commissioner of Police in FCT, Bala Ciroma has ordered an investigation into the incident.
The spokesperson commiserated with family and friends of the deceased.
The statement assured that the police will be lucid in its investigation and ensure the findings are made public.

President Muhammadu Buhari, has received reports by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry probing Ibrahim Magu, the suspended Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
The commission led by retired Justice Ayo Salami has been investigating the activities of EFCC under the leadership of the suspended Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu.
This follows allegations of corruption and misconduct among others.
The allegations were raised by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami.

ECOWAS Court of Justice has fixed November 30, 2020 to hear suit no. ECW/CCJ/APP/14/19 involving ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) and Cross River State Government.
EBID accused Cross River of failure to adhere to the terms of the loan agreement no. 7/AP/LAFRDF/04/05.
The accord was entered by both parties on May 20, 2005.
The applicant claimed that the respondent secured the loan for the partial financing of the Tinapa Free Trade Zone and Resort.

EBID said Cross River has refused to follow the agreed repayment terms.
The bank is seeking orders declaring the agreement as valid, binding and subsisting, and mandating the respondent to immediately repay the sum of $6,999,679, among others.
EBID relied on Article 9 (6) of the Court’s Supplementary Protocol, Section 10.4 and Article 3 of the loan agreement.
The court also fixed November 30 to adopt the terms of settlement in a suit by representatives of some Nigerian communities.
The towns in Rivers, Imo, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Ebonyi, Cross River, Abia, Enugu, Anambra and Benue States were victims of mines and explosives remnants of Nigeria’s civil war.
The defendants are the federal government, Ministry of Defence, Minister of Defence, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, and two companies that undertook the demining exercise.

The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has berated Governor Dapo Abiodun over the death of two pupils, who died allegedly after taking the state government deworming drugs.
The PDP said it was worried over the unfortunate death of the two female pupils of Saint James African Church Primary School, Idi- Ape, Abeokuta.
According to the PDP, the pupils had died “after taking the deworming drugs administered on school-age children by a medical team from the state government.”
The Ogun State Government had said the deworming drug is not a poison.

The state Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, in a statement, maintained that the school children must have died from an outbreak of cholera.
But, in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday by Ogun PDP spokesperson, Akinloye Bankole, the party said it was sad about “the levity with which the Abiodun government is handling the general issue of governance and issues bordering on health and medical services of the people.”
Aside from the two deaths in question, Bankole alleged that “several other pupils are still being treated in various medical facilities across the state capital.”
Priding itself a responsible party, the PDP mentioned that “we are compelled to hold that the ruling APC government, from all indications, did not follow necessary medical protocols in dispensing de-worming drugs to pupils.”
This, the PDP spokesperson said had confirmed “the disgusting penchant for continuous trial and error tactics which has become the trademark of the government.”
“As a concerned stakeholder, we wonder how any right-thinking public health expert gives deworming drugs to pupils with diarrhea, cholera and even malaria,” saying “it is despicable, it is the height of irresponsibility of government to say the least.”
The PDP expressed shock with the response of the state government to the ugly incident as if children deserves to contract cholera “under the watchful eyes of a government which claims to have spent billions of Naira on health and medical services in the last 15months of administration.”
While commiserating with the families of the late pupils, the party encouraged members of the public to hold the Gov Abiodun government responsible for the death of the pupils.
“Lastly, we wish to state it very clearly that the avoidable death of the two innocent pupils at this time is big enough for any sensible government to own up to its tradition of woeful failures and get serious with the business of governance,” Bankole submitted.

Gov. Samuel Ortom says he has no plan to return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) which he left for the Peoples Democractic Party (PDP) to win a second term as Benue governor.
This is contained in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr Terver Akase, and newsmen in Makurdi on Thursday.
According to the statement, although, the governor was contacted by some notable persons to dump the PDP he, however, declined the invitation.
“We have read some mischievous statements by members of the opposition in Benue State insinuating that Gov. Samuel Ortom plans to rejoin All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Those involved in the impish allegation are clearly doing so to soothe their stuck-up apprehensions.
“Why will Gov. Ortom return to APC? To do what?
“It is true that the governor was contacted by some notable persons to defect from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), but he declined the invitation.”
The statement further explained that Ortom, who is the leader of the PDP in the North Central, had robust relationship with other leaders of the party within the region and needed not to leave the party.
“Gov Ortom is the leader of PDP in North Central Nigeria, and he is enjoying a robust relationship with other leaders of the party in Benue State and the entire region.
“It is, therefore, ridiculous for anyone to insinuate that the governor has the intention to leave PDP.”
The statement advised the young men “peddling the hang-about rumour to take advantage of the numerous entrepreneurial opportunities the Ortom administration had created “to engage in rewarding ventures and shun falsehood.”

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria on Thursday warned the Federal Government against victimisation of Nigerians who participated in the #EndSARS protests, including the freezing of their bank accounts.
The National President of PFN, Rev. Felix Omobude, said this in a statement titled, ‘Stop the harrassment of promoters of #EndSARS.’
He said, “The PFN is particularly disturbed at reports of harassment of the #EndSARS promoters. We condemn the freezing of bank accounts of people linked with the protests. While the PFN recognises the right of the CBN to oversight functions on movement of funds within the banking system, it is important that they do not go overboard or create the impression that they are acting in furtherance of a different agenda.
“The PFN calls on the Federal Government to be sincere in its approach to the crisis and adopt a more conciliatory style rather than confrontation in dealing with the promoters of the #EndSARS protests. While the PFN will not support any act of criminality, it is of the view that given the range of issues thrown up by the protests, what is required in its resolution is more of tact and wisdom.”

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said Atiku Abubakar’s choice of Peter Obi as his running mate in the 2019 election got his Ebonyi counterpart, Dave Umahi upset with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike said with Umahi’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), he should be mindful of the political future of the South-East.
The governor, in a Live broadcast on Thursday, said Umahi has shown that he is an ungrateful man.
He recalled that after the 2018 PDP convention that produced Atiku, the former Vice President consulted widely and selected Obi, a former Anambra Governor.

Wike said: “Umahi was livid because he wanted to produce or he wanted to be Vice President. You don’t choose who would be the Vice Presidential candidate of anybody. Umahi was livid. What disturbs me, why do you think that if anything comes to the South-East it must be you. Why do you think so?”
He insisted that Umahi cannot talk of injustice when he practices injustice against the South-East zone by singly installing his two younger brothers; one as the PDP Zonal Vice Chairman and the other as the Deputy State Chairman.
“If he believes in equity and justice, will he be doing such? It is because he has planted these people that the State House of Assembly had such effrontery to give the National Working Committee (NWC) ultimatum to zone presidency to the East. Where does such a thing happen? No other party has done any zoning. You can imagine the level of selfishness,” he noted.
Wike dismissed Umahi’s comment that he made PDP what it is in the region as the financier of its activities.
He noted that such a claim suggests that Governors of Abia and Enugu States are not doing anything to ensure the success of the party in the zone.

Shehu Sani, former Kaduna lawmaker, has taken a swipe at the Nigerian government for describing the Lekki massacre as one without bodies.
Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information, on Thursday had insisted that there were no killings at the Lekki toll-gate, describing footage from the incident as false.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has described the killing of a newspaper vendor in Abuja by one of the security details as horrible, saying he is distraught by the incident.
 
Gbajabiamila, in a statement he personally signed and issued in the early hours of Friday, said he did not know that someone was killed in the attempt to protect him until he arrived his destination.

It can be recalled that a security aide to the Speaker shot the vendor in the head yesterday.
 
The incident, which occurred at the Federal Secretariat, Abuja, around 3 pm on Thursday, had caused panic in the area.
 
The victim, identified as Ifeanyi Okereke, was subsequently rushed to the National Hospital by his brother and some police officers, where he reportedly died.
 
It was learnt that the shooting happened when Okereke and other street vendors selling on the Shehu Shagari Way, Three Arms Zone, flocked around the convoy of the Speaker, who was said to be in the habit of giving out money anytime he passed them.
 
The Speaker’s statement read, “A horrible incident has taken place. This evening as I left the national assembly, I stopped as usual to exchange pleasantries with the newspaper vendors at the corner. Many of them have known me since I first moved to Abuja and it was a friendly exchange.
 
“Unfortunately, after the convoy set out in continuation of movement, unidentified men obstructed the convoy which got the attention of security men in the convoy who shot into the air to disperse them.
 
“Some hours later, after getting to our destination, it was brought to my attention that someone was hit by a stray bullet, contrary to an earlier report by men in the convoy that they applied their security discretion to shoot in the air.
 
“I have caused a report to be made to the local police station and an investigation has commenced.
 
“In the meantime; the officer who fired the fatal shot has been suspended from the convoy pending the conclusion of the investigation.”
 
Gbajabiamila further wrote, “My value for human life and my respect for all people – irrespective of social-economic status – is what endeared me to these vendors and these are the reasons why I stop my convoy quite often to connect with them. For one of them to have been shot by my security detail is horrific and I cannot begin to imagine the grief and loss Ifeanyi’s family must feel on this sad day. No family should have to go through this.
 
“I am personally distraught about this incident and my deepest sympathies go to the victim, his family, and Abuja vendors.”

The naira tumbled to 620 against the British pound sterling at the parallel market on Thursday, even as the euro rose to N565.

The naira fell by 2.1 per cent against the pound from 607 on Wednesday, and by 1.4 per cent against the euro from 560.
The local currency was, however, stable against the dollar at the parallel market as it traded at 478/$1. It dropped from 475/$1 on Tuesday to 478/$1 on Wednesday.
In the Investors’ and Exporters’ forex window, the naira firmed to 385.50 against the greenback on Thursday from 386 on Wednesday as daily turnover rose to $205.84m from $32.88m on Wednesday, according to data obtained from FMDQ Group.
The Central Bank of Nigeria has kept the official exchange rate at N379/$1 since August, when the naira was devalued for the second time this year from 360 per dollar. It was first devalued to 360 in March from 306.
The nation’s forex reserves stood at $35.54bn as of November 17, down from $35.69bn on October 28, according to the CBN.
The Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Cowry Asset Management Limited, Mr Johnson Chukwu, had told our correspondent on Monday that forex demand pressures were coming from end-users and those whose obligations had matured and in need of forex to meet the obligations.
“There is a lot of unmet demand,” Chukwu had said, adding that pressure was mounting even as the CBN continued to intervene in the market.

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party is set to review its manifesto to align with Nigeria’s current socio-political realities.
Our correspondent gathered that this was one of the decisions taken at the party’s National Caucus meeting which ended in the early hours of Thursday.
A source at the meeting, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media on the issue, said, “We received briefings from the Governor Bala Mohammed-led committee set up to review the 2019 general elections, the state of our party, and also discussed a wide range of issues of national importance.
“The Bala Mohammed Committee is yet to conclude its assignment but substantial progress has been made.”

Asked if the defection of the Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, was discussed, the source said, “We were briefed by the National Working Committee on efforts made to persuade him to remain.”
Speaking further, the source said, “We also agreed that as part of our agenda to reposition the party, we will be reviewing our manifesto for it to align with current realities in the social-political sphere. It will form part of the agenda of our National Executive Committee meeting holding in a few hours from now.”
Speaking to reporters soon after the caucus meeting, National Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus simply said, “We discussed issues affecting our party and our country.“
Also, the Governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku, said, “The PDP remains the only party which is nationalistic, we are repositioning ourselves to become stronger.”
Those who attended the meeting which held at the Akwa Ibom Governor’s Lodge, Asokoro, include Governors Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Darius Ishaku, (Taraba), former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Senator Walid Jibrin and a former PDP National Chairnan, Bello Haliru, among others.

The detained Imo State House of Assembly lawmaker, Heclus Okoro has been granted bail and released from the state correctional centre.
The legislator, who is representing Ohaji/Egbema state constituency in Imo House of Assembly, was arrested on Friday, November 13, 2020 by the Imo State police over an alleged thuggery.
Okoro was granted bail on Wednesday alongside four of his legislative aides.
Speaking to newsmen immediately after his release at the magistrate court Owerri, the lawmaker reiterated his commitment to serving his people whose mandate, according to him, he holds tenaciously.

Ogun State government has called on all residents to be at alert for possible diseases of public health concern which are common during the dry season.
In a release by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, the likes of Yellow Fever, Measles and particularly Cholera, which is a water and foodborne disease, are rampant in the dry season.
According to her, Cholera is characterised by severe vomiting and diarrhoea which can cause rapid deterioration of health and death, if not managed on time.
“During this period, residents should ensure they have a good water source and treatment.

“They should practise regular and proper handwashing as well as proper disposal of faeces while they desist from open defecation,” she said.
The Commissioner advised residents with symptoms to seek immediate help from the nearest health facility, noting that early case detection and proper management can save a life.
However, she added that the Ministry was notified of the unfortunate demise of two school-age children from the same school and same compound following an episode of Gastroenteritis, which suggests a possible water-borne disease, cholera.
“Investigation led by the Ogun State Commissioner for Health along with officials of the Federal Ministry of Health and Abeokuta South Local Government, revealed that the children died of a severe case of vomiting and diarrhoea.
“The government in its bid to stop the spread of the disease has put in place community sensitisation and advocacy. We have sent Cholera alert to all health facilities in the state and engaged in prepositioning of materials for case management in government hospitals,” Coker noted.

Unknown gunmen have killed the younger brother of the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters in Oyo State, Mrs Funmilayo Orisadeyi The victim, Isaac Orisadeyi Adedoku, was reportedly shot dead on Nihort-Idi-Isin, Ibadan.
Confirming the story, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Olugbemiga Fadeyi, said a suspect, identified as Joseph, has been arrested. He added that the remains of the victim had been deposited in the morgue of Adeoyo Hospital, Ibadan.
He said: “Information reaching me showed that nothing was taken away from the victim, we are still investigating it and the secret behind it will be unravelled as soon as police get to the root of the matter.”
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters in Oyo state, Mrs Funmilayo Orisadeyi said two hospitals did not admit the victim.

Further information revealed that the deceased was coming from the office around 8 pm on Tuesday evening when some gunmen trying to snatch the bike from the owner.
While the attackers were resisted, they shot the deceased at close range. In a similar situation, a young man identified as Adoja Tanaku was reportedly beheaded during an argument at Bakatare area of Ibadan very close to Ogun State.

Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Jibrin Barau has disclosed that the Nigeria Senate would get a harmonised 2021 budget from its Committee on December 3.
He said some Chairman of Committees have submitted their budget reports on agencies of government, which were quite satisfactory.
Speaking in Abuja late Wednesday, Senator Barau explained that the time table of December 3rd would be adhered to strictly to enable Senate Committee of the whole begin debate as soon as possible.
“We look towards the submission of the budget on December 3″, he insisted.

He was optimistic that cases of omission of some agencies of government who are ill-prepared would be solved before the expected date, adding that some agencies which were asked to put their budgets in proper perspectives were working seriously with Senate’s timing handed to them.
“The budget proposal is a very wide process, talking about estimates of expenditures that are going to be undertaken by the Federal Government.
“So, you have several expenditures and there is room for omission. But that is why we are here.
“We told our own committees to go and scrutinise the budgets of ministries and report back to us.
“Whatever you see in the budget, whether or not it is an omission, our work is to get the report and engage our own expert here,” he said.
Barau stressed that the Senate will use their professional accountants and economist to correct any error, if there was need to do so.

The number of COVID-19 deaths in the United States crossed 250,000 on Wednesday, as a third coronavirus wave brings a fresh surge in infections and puts immense strain on the healthcare system.
The number of people hospitalized with the virus rose to at least 78,630 by Wednesday afternoon, the highest ever for a single day during the pandemic.

Governors and local officials have brought in a range of measures in recent days to try to damp down the surge.
Cleveland asked residents to stay home, mask mandates were passed in places that had previously resisted them.
New York City’s school district, the largest in the United States, is halting in-person learning from Thursday.
Over a seven-day average, the United States is reporting 1,176 daily deaths, more than the daily average deaths in India and Brazil combined – the two countries next most affected.
The United States has reported a total of about 11.4 million cases since the start of the pandemic and remains the only country to have reported more than 10 million cases.
With nearly 158,000 cases per day, it accounts for one in every 26 infections reported worldwide, according to a Reuters tally.
The Midwest is currently the hardest-hit region, based on the number of cases per capita.
North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska are the top five worst-affected U.S. states.
The record number of total new cases reported by any state in any 24-hour period was recorded by Illinois on Friday, with 15,433 new cases.
This surpassed the previous all-time high of 15,300 set by Florida in July.
New York, which was the first major U.S. coronavirus epicentre in March and April, remains the state with the highest overall number of deaths since the pandemic began – over 33,000.

The popular disc jockey who streamed live the shooting at the Lekki Toll Gate during the #EndSars protest made this known on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, during a chat with CNN's Becky Anderson.
According to her, the government has become a dictatorship headed by people who arrest and persecute innocent citizens.
DJ Switch while giving an account of what happened on that infamous night said describing herself as being lucky would be unfair on the side of those who didn't make it out of the protest grounds alive.
She went on to reveal how her career as a disc jockey has been cut short because of the hard evidence against the government.
"My career is gone, all my bookings are gone. But I am happy that I have used my platform to do this. I don't want to run forever. I want to go back home, I don't care if they pick me when I get home," she said.

An Abeokuta High Court on Wednesday sentenced a 39-year-old man, Musiliu Owolabi, to death by hanging for killing his lover, Afusat Idowu.
Owolabi, an automobile mechanic was sentenced on one count of murder.
Justice Mosunmola Dipeolu ,the Chief Judge of Ogun State while delivering her judgment, submitted that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubts that Owolabi was guilty of the offence charged, hence, convicted him.
Dipeolu, said the crime committed breached the provisions of section 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun 2006.

She held that the evidence presented by the prosecution was tenable and therefore, sentenced Owolabi to death by hanging.
Earlier, the state prosecution counsel, Mr James Mafe, Director of legal Drafting, Planning Research and Statistics, said the convict committed the offence on Feb.1, 2018, at Camp area in Abeokuta.
Mafe said the convict took his lover to a hotel for pleasure after a while she complained of stomachache and later started foaming from her mouth.
Mafe added, “The convict took her to his vehicle, on his way he noticed she was dead, and secretly took the deceased to an uncompleted building, dug a shallow grave and buried her without disclosing to anybody.
“The convict was arrested when the younger brother of the deceased went to the police station to complain that his sister who told him she was going for a naming ceremony at Bode Olude area never returned.
“Upon police investigation, with the help of tracking the deceased phone, it was discovered that the convict was the last person that spoke with the deceased.
“On his arrest, he made a confessional statement to the police and took them to where he buried his lover .”
The offender had earlier been arraigned on Nov. 12, 2019, and had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Nigerians on social media on Wednesday dragged the Federal government and Nigeria Broadcasting Commission after CNN released its findings from an independent investigation carried out on the October 20 shooting incident at the Lekki tollgate.
Footage released by CNN showed that soldiers shot at the End SARS protesters who had gathered at the tollgate to press home their demands to end SARS as well as police brutality.
CNN also tracked the bullets shells seen at the scene of the massacre which showed that they were purchased by the Federal government from Serbia in 2005.
The global cable network in its investigation spoke with a man, Elisha Sunday, whose brother, Victor, was killed during the October 20th shooting incident amid Federal Government’s claims of ”No casualties.”

Following the development, Nigerians took to social media to drag the Buhari led government over their inability to fully sanction the culprits behind the massacre.
While some applauded the international media house for carrying out a detailed investigation of the incident and making revelations, others mocked the Federal Government and the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission saying they have no powers to sanction CNN over its detailed investigation.
The reactions gathered from socail media were mostly against the Nigerian government.

The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday approved the 2020 Finance Bill.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the council presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, briefed State House correspondents of the meeting’s outcome.
She said the 2020 Finance Bill was meant to support the 2021 fiscal year budget.

The minister gave an assurance that the bill will not lead to an increase in tax because the situation in the country does not warrant an increase in taxes.
“This is not the time to increase taxes,” she said.

The Federal High Court in Lagos has further adjourned till December 9 to rule on the no-case submission filed by Internet personality, Ismaila Mustapha, alias Mompha, in response to the money laundering charges slammed on him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Justice Mohammed Liman had earlier scheduled the ruling for Wednesday, but the parties were told by the court that the ruling was not ready.
They were directed to return on December 9.
The EFCC arraigned Mompha and a firm, Ismalob Global Investment Limited, on 22 counts in which they were accused of laundering an aggregate of N32.95bn between 2015 and 2018.
The EFCC alleged that Mompha procured the firm to retain the N32.9bn in its bank account, when he ought to have reasonably known that the funds formed parts of proceeds of an unlawful act; to wit: fraud.

The prosecution said being a designated non-financial institution, Ismalob Global Investment Limited failed to report to the EFCC within seven days huge single lodgments and transfers such as N104.8m, N135m, N20m, N150m, N22.3m, N100m and N42m.
Furthermore, the EFCC alleged that not being an authourised buyer of foreign exchange currency appointed by the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mompha negotiated several foreign exchange transactions with different individuals in the sums of N20m, N22.3m, N30m, N100m and N40.7m.
He was also accused of making cash payments of €299,000, €213,675, €273,000 to one Ahmed Sarki, said to be deceased.
These offences were said to be contrary to Section 18(c), 15(2)(d), 15(3) and Section 10 of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.
The EFCC said Mompha and Ismalob Global Investment Limited also violated sections 5 and 29(1)(c) of the Foreign Exchange Monitoring and Miscellaneous (Provisions) Act Cap F34 LFN 2004.
But the defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In a bid to prove the charges, the EFCC called 10 witnesses and tendered a load of documents.
But Mompha, through his lawyer, Mr Gboyega Oyewole (SAN), said the anti-graft agency failed to establish a prima facie case against him.
He urged the court to dismiss the charges and set him.
But the EFCC opposed the prayer.

A former Commissioner for Information and State Orientation in Ebonyi State, Chief Egwu Chima, has said that Governor Dave Umahi’s defection from the PDP to the APC would not add tonic to the APC.
Chima, a chieftain of the APC and one-time chairman of Afikpo South Local Government Area, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abakaliki.
He declared that the defection by the governor to the APC would hurt the integrity of the party rather than enhance and reinvigorate its fortunes.
Recall that Umahi had on Tuesday announced his defection to the APC at a news conference in Abakaliki, ending months of speculations.

The governor said his defection was to protest against the injustice meted to the southeast by the PDP, the party he had supported since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.
Chima, however, said that Umahi’s mission in the APC was known only to him.
“While in the PDP, Umahi’s love for President Muhammadu Buhari was a sing-song though Buhari has lost every election in the governor’s polling unit, ward and local government. Now that he is in APC, we are going to win elections in these otherwise weak areas.
“With the governor now in our party, Ebonyi will be counted as an APC-controlled state and no longer in opposition,’’ Chima said.

Ten new Coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Yobe State by the Nigeria Centre for Disease, (NCDC), on Wednesday.
The reported new cases were among the 152 confirmed cases recorded on Tuesday across 12 states of the federation.
According to NCDC’s state case chart, Yobe State occupies number 34 with 92 confirmed cases, 13 active cases, 71 patients discharged while 8 victims died from the virus.
This is coming as the government in the state has given approval for the establishment of Reference Molecular Laboratory at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital, Damaturu.

When completed, the lab will be used to test COVID-19, yellow and lassa fevers as well as other hemorrhagic fever and diseases.
Recalled that Yobe State Independent Electoral Commission had in September shifted the date for LG election to 27th February, 2021 following the resurgence of the virus.

Douye Diri has been affirmed as the duly elected Governor of Bayelsa State, by a seven-man panel of the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
The apex court, in a unanimous judgement by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, dismissed the six appeals filed against Diri and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
Justice Ngwuta, in his judgement, predicated the dismissal of the appeals on the withdrawal of the six appeals by lawyers of the appellants.
The appeals dismissed were filed by the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), Accord Party (AP) and Labour Movement (LM).

Diri who contested under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) came second in the last year’s governorship election in the state.
He was later declared Governor of the state in a subsequent Supreme Court judgement disqualifying the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, David Lyon, who had emerged the winner of the poll.
Diri’s victory has been challenged a number of times, but the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja had at different times also affirmed him as the duly elected governor of the state.

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that the federal government would meet all agreements with unions in the educational sector.
Buhari gave the assurance while expressing concern over the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
He appealed to the lecturers to return to their duty posts.
The President spoke at the 2020 convocation and 72nd founding day celebration of the University of Ibadan, on Tuesday.

Buhari was represented at the ocassion by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
He urged all unions in the educational sector to embrace dialogue, rather than confrontation.
“I wish to assure all stakeholders, in the education sector, that the Federal Government will continue to meet its obligations and agreements with all unions.
“It is my earnest desire that all unions should shed the toga of confrontation and embrace dialogue, for the sake of our children and the development of our educational system,” he said.
