President Muhammadu Buhari declared Saturday in Kaduna that job creation will remain one of the topmost priorities of his administration’s economic agenda because it was vital for the attainment of the Federal Government’s other objectives of improved security and poverty reduction. 
 
Speaking at the 2nd Convocation ceremony of the Kaduna State University which had ‘Entrepreneurship for Development’ as its theme, President Buhari pledged that his administration will give the fullest possible support to all efforts to create more jobs through the reorientation of Nigerian youth towards an entrepreneurial mindset.

“This administration will ensure that youths in the country are gainfully employed and youth restiveness curtailed. 
 
“One of the focal points of this administration is job creation. Job creation will help in the achievement of other objectives of the government such as poverty reduction. Insecurity cannot be divorced from unemployment and poverty because an idle mind, they say, is the devil’s workshop. 
 
“With declining internally generated revenue and over dependence on equally declining oil revenues, there is need to seek other ways of diversifying the economy so as to boost revenue. 
 
“One of the ways we can achieve this is through the reorientation of our youths towards an entrepreneurial mindset. We must therefore promote and enhance the teaching and learning of entrepreneurial skills in all schools and tertiary institutions, thereby exposing our youth to the basics and rudiments of starting and sustaining their own businesses,” President Buhari told the audience. 
 
The President said that to encourage and assist Nigerian youth to move from being job seekers to job creators, his administration will sustain and improve ongoing programmes by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, the Bank of Industry, the Bank of Agriculture and other Federal agencies to grant them start-up loans at concessionary rates. 
 
President Buhari urged the Nigerian private sector to also do more to support government’s efforts to boost youth entrepreneurship and the development of micro, small and medium scale enterprises in the country. 
 
He thanked the university for conferring an honourary doctorate degree of letters on him.

 Ex-militant Leader, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo has denied media reports that he failed to respond to an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). 
 
In a statement on Saturday, Tompolo refuted reports of his invitation by the EFCC, alleging that he was only being witch-hunted because he bluntly refused to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as well as to support their Governorship candidate in Bayelsa State.

Recall that on Thursday, the EFCC had given the former Niger Delta militant leader, one week to appear before the Commission on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos or risk being declared wanted. 
 
In a letter from the EFCC, the Commission says it is investigating Tompolo for unclear dealings involving the sale of parcels of land worth about 13 billion naira to the federal government under the last administration. 
 
He is expected to appear at the EFCC training room on Thursday, December 17. 
 
But in his statement today, Tompolo said: “On the November 24th 2015, I was informed at about 4 p.m. that a letter of invitation had been dropped at my home in Warri, inviting me to EFCC’s office in Lagos by 10 a.m. on the 25th of November 2015. I responded by a letter from my Solicitors, Messrs. Jakpa, Edoge & Co. The letter dated November 25th 2015 was received by one Uduak Ouot, a staff of EFCC, on the 3rd of December 2015, after several attempts to deliver. I have proof of delivery from the courier company.” 
 
Mr. Ekpemupolo said he was surprised that the EFCC, which he described as “an otherwise reputable institution,” lied to Nigerians. He added that his lawyer’s letter “indicated I am already in court with the EFCC in Suit No: FHC/W/CS/152/2015. EFCC had been served with the court processes since 20th of October 2015 but they refused to attend court on several occasions, or to file any court papers, only to appear for the first time on 30th November 2015 without filing any court papers. They even asked for the matter to be adjourned to 17th December 2015, the date they are now inviting me to appear before them.” 
 
He stated that the anti-corruption agency invited him two months after he had sued them. He said he had informed the EFCC of his readiness to honor their invitation once the court rules on his own suit, adding that the agency seemed bent on harassing him through their “reminder of 9th December 2015, which was leaked to the media on the 10th of December 2015, the same day as it was delivered to my house in Warri.” 
 
Mr. Ekpemupolo stated, “As a full blooded Ijaw man and citizen of Nigeria, I have done everything in my power to follow the laws of Nigeria. Since the amnesty declared in 2009 by [the] late President Yar’Adua I have strained myself to ensure that we all live in peace in this country. Those who think they can push us to war must rethink the necessity of such a war. 
 
“How can a law-abiding Government declare a man wanted who is in the law courts with them? 
 
“They froze our business accounts since August 4th 2015, but we have not quarreled with anybody. We sued them to court, they refused to come to court. Now they are threatening to declare me wanted. 
 
“I know why they are after me. It is not the alleged multi-billion naira property transaction. After all, it went through due process and was approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC). And as such if there are any questions to answer, it is the people at the FEC, Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Federal Ministry of Lands and Survey, Federal Ministry of Transport, NIMASA, etc who approved the transaction that should be answering such questions. 
 
“The real reason this All Progressive Congress (APC)-led Government is after me is that I bluntly refused to join APC and to support their Governorship candidate in Bayelsa State. We cannot all be in APC. Our people have always believed in the Nigerian project and had always hoped to join hands with this administration to move this project forward, but the conditions being attached are not acceptable. I insist on believing in the Nigerian project unconditionally! 
 
“We will continue to pursue our court case. The threat to declare me wanted is an unnecessary attempt to heat up the polity. I will go about my daily business, [as] usual. 
 
“Finally, let me say this: if people can come from Sokoto, Katsina or Lagos to campaign in Bayelsa, why can’t I, a full-blooded Ijaw man, go to my Bayelsa to campaign? I will only add this: let the will of the people of Bayelsa prevail. Nobody should attempt to force the outcome of the election. We have kept faith with our promise to Nigeria, we expect no less from this country. So if anyone tells you that Tompolo is on the run, tell him Tompolo is not going anywhere.”

Despite missing the injured Neymar, the European champions looked on course to bounce back from last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Valencia thanks to stunning strikes from Messi and Rakitic.

Burundi’s army said that 79 “enemies” and eight soldiers were killed during the bloodiest day in months of unrest Friday, which left the streets of the capital strewn with bodies, many bearing gunshot wounds. 
 
The violence began with coordinated attacks by unidentified gunmen on three military installations, which triggered a fierce riposte from the security forces. 
 
Several witnesses described the police and army going door-to-door in opposition strongholds in the capital Bujumbura, dragging out young men and executing them. 
 
Army spokesman Colonel Gaspard Baratuza said all those killed were either “enemies” of the state, soldiers or policemen.

“The final toll of the attacks yesterday is 79 enemies killed, 45 captured and 97 weapons seized, and on our side eight soldiers and policemen were killed and 21 wounded,” Baratuza said. 
 
The army had given a much lower toll after the assault Friday on two military bases and a military training college, saying that 12 rebel gunmen had been killed and 21 captured in the attacks. 
 
But on Saturday morning horrified residents of different neighbourhoods awoke to find at least 39 corpses scattered in the streets. 
 
“Fighting continued into the night and the corpses found in these neighbourhoods this morning are enemies,” Baratuza declared. 
 
Several witnesses accused the security forces of extrajudicial killings, describing officers breaking down doors in search of young men and shooting them at close range. 
 
Some of the victims had their arms tied behind their backs, they said. 
 
The army spokesman declined to comment on the details of the fighting and deaths. 
 
One witness in Nyakabiga, a hotspot of anti-government protest in recent months, described the victims as “kids” and said they had been shot execution-style “through the top of the skull”. 
 
A resident of Musaga, close to the military college that was among the sites attacked on Friday, said there were more than a dozen corpses in the streets. “I have counted 14 dead bodies with my own eyes,” he said, blaming “soldiers and police” for the killings. 
 
But government supporters were in triumphant mood, holding marches Saturday in Bujumbura and other towns under police protection to celebrate what they described as “the victory of our valiant army over the enemy.” 
– Bodies buried in mass graves – 
 
The government collected bodies from the streets of Bujumbura on Saturday, with sources saying they were swiftly buried in mass graves in the afternoon “to prevent the spread of disease.” 
 
But some residents said they suspected the authorities of trying to hide evidence of a massacre perpetrated by the security forces, a view echoed by a European diplomat. 
 
“There are dozens of bodies , but “The authorities are trying to make them disappear,” the diplomat, who spoke of “dozens of bodies in other protest districts, such as Mutakura and Cibitoke” on top of those in Nyakabiga. 
 
The fighting was the worst outbreak of violence since a failed coup in May, sparked by President Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office, which he later won in disputed elections in July. 
 
The United Nations Security Council met Friday following a request from France, with UN chief Ban Ki-moon saying the attacks risked triggering “a further destabilisation of the situation” and urging all sides to hold back, according to his spokesman. 
 
US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power said that the Council was ready “to consider additional measures” against powerbrokers in the central African country who continue to block a political solution to the crisis. 
 
Months of street protests against Nkurunziza have devolved into frequent armed attacks, with gunfire regularly erupting at night in Bujumbura and dead bodies a frequent sight on the city’s streets. 
 
Attacks targeting the security forces have escalated, with rebels armed with assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars attacking police convoys and targeting government installations. 
 
UN figures released before Friday’s violence showed at least 240 people had been killed and more than 200,000 had fled abroad since May, raising fears of a return to civil war, a decade after the end of a 1993-2006 conflict between rebels from the Hutu majority and an army dominated by minority Tutsis. 
 
Some 300,000 people were killed in the war, which began a year before a genocide of mostly Tutsis in neighbouring Rwanda. 
 
The Security Council said that sending UN peacekeepers to the nation remained an option, and stressed the need for urgent political dialogue.

A 16-year-old boy, Mohammed Isah, claims he duped policemen of thousands of Naira by raising false alarm. 
 
Nigerian-PoliceIt was gathered that Isah, of no fixed address, penultimate Tuesday, went to the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State and alleged that police metro patrol teams 4 and 5 took N180,000 from him after he was arrested. Consequently, the teams were invited and interrogated and it was discovered that they had no contact with him.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect had made similar allegation against some policemen in Anambra and Ondo states. 
 
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said Isah came to the state police command to allege that some policemen in patrol vehicles arrested him and, in order to free himself, he gave them N150,000. However, he ran out of luck. While he was making the report, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, who had served in Anambra and was with the Commissioner of Police, suspected his report. He recalled how a man made such claim in Anambra and succeeded in collecting N120,000 and also went to Ondo State and used the same method to collect N40,000 from the police while five of the policemen he accused were dismissed. Based on this, the police boss ordered that his allegation be thoroughly investigated and, at the end, it was found to be false. 
 
Stating his own side of the story, Isah said, ‘’ I am from Kebbi State. I was arrested when I came to the police command to report that some policemen on patrol arrested me and collected money from me which was false. It was not my first time of doing it. I had used the same trick to defraud the police in Anambra and Ondo States. So, I came to do same in Lagos but I was not lucky. Before going to the police command, I will copy the number of a patrol vehicle and go to the command to report that the men on duty with that patrol number had arrested me and collected money from me. 
 
The commissioner of police in-charge of the state will give me back the amount I claimed they extorted from me since they have zero tolerance for corruption. So, I saw it as an opportunity to make money but I ran out of luck when a Deputy Commissioner of Police, who was with the Commissioner of Police in Lagos when I was lodging the report, recounted a similar case that happened in his state and my allegation was investigated. That led to my arrest. I did it because I have no job and nobody to help me but I know it is not good.’

Prof. Isah Daniel, Vice-Chairman of the party in the zone, told newsmen at the end of the meeting that the Audu/Faleke ticket “won the Nov. 21 governorship election with or without the result of the supplementary election. 
 
“More than 6,000 votes scored during supplementary election are not enough to deny Audu/Faleke ticket; the mandate freely given to them before the election was declared inconclusive. 
 
“All stakeholders and party loyalists from the nine local government areas in Igala land have, therefore, resolved to stand on Audu/Faleke.’’ 
 
In a similar development, traders under the aegis of the National Association of Market Women and Men of Nigeria, Kabba-Bunu Local Government, staged a peaceful protest to expressed support for the Audu/Faleke ticket. 
 
At a rally held in Kabba on Saturday, market leaders, Mrs Felicia Aiyeromi and Mr Stephen Oladipupo, said in separate interviews that the traders had an understanding with Faleke before the election which made them to vote APC during the election. 
 
They called on the leadership of the party to replace Audu with Faleke in the interest of justice and fairness. 
 
Also, at a meeting called by the leader of the APC in Kogi West Senatorial District, Rep. Buba Jibril in Lokoja, stakeholders and leaders rejected the nomination of Bello as a replacement for Audu. 
 
The leaders, in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, resolved that although Faleke might pursue litigation against the party over the nomination of Bello, party leaders should not foreclose peaceful negotiation.

In an essay, titled, ‘’Afenifere: A Syllabus Of Errors’’, written in 1998 and published in Gamji.com, Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi wrote the following: 
 
‘’Anyone who needs a lesson in how not to be a politician, and how never to win power in Nigeria should study Yoruba politicians. 
 
“Unless the Yoruba masses disown Afenifere, this group of degree-bearing political illiterates will lead Yoruba land down its own version of a syllabus of errors, an island unto themselves, allucinating in their own idiocy and content to remain marginalised citizens in their own country while blaming the North for their self – inflicted woes. 
 
“The syllabus of errors remains a black spot on the history of the Catholic Church. Afenifere will be an even blacker spot on the political history of the Yoruba. 
 
Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi’s pedigree speaks mountains of what his political stance would be ab initio. “He probably believes, like other Fulani politicians, that the problems of this country have a lot to do with the shift in power away from the Fulani to individuals like Babangida and Abacha, products of lower cultures’. 
 
“The Fulani of the North, proud of the history of the Caliphate, remain proud of the roles played by Fulani leaders of the political and military establishment in Nigeria- Ahmadu Bello, Murtala Muhammed, Aminu Kano, Shehu Yar’Adua, Shehu Shagari, Jubril Aminu. 
 
“They are sad that other Nigerians do not know the difference in ethnic background between say, Murtala Muhammed and Ibrahim Babangida. They do not understand how a man like Abacha, born to a cigarette-seller in Fagge quarters of Kano (and this speaks mountains of him, how he ruled and how he died), can be taken as the quintessential representative of the Caliphate whose head he disgraced and whose culture and values he sought to erode. 
 
“So, Shinkafi probably believes in the need for a power-shift: Back to the Fulani. He may not be alone in this tendency. Politicians like Mahmud Waziri, Bamanga Tukur, Jubril Aminu, even M. D. Yusufu may consciously or unconsciously have similar views. 
 
“To the Fulani, there is nothing like ceding the presidency or power. If you want it, you work for it…If you lack the stomach to dig in and fight, too bad for you. Southern politicians have always failed to understand the complexity of the North and its politics’’. 
 
These are interesting words from an interesting Fulani man. The disdain and sheer contempt that Emir Sanusi harbors for non-Fulanis and southerners and for Afenifere and the Yoruba people in particular remains intact till today. His assertion that ‘’southern politicians have always failed to understand the complexity of the North’’ is false. 
 
Racist views 
 
Despite the fact that we southerners understand the nature of core northern politicians and leaders very well, we have always chosen to hold our peace, condone their excesses, carry their baggage and accept their strange ways and complicated peculiarities in the name of national unity. 
 
The truth is that it is Emir Sanusi and his Fulani people that have misunderstood southerners all along. We in the South may be accommodating, tolerant and generous people, but our kindness and liberal nature must never be mistaken for stupidity or weakness. That is the mistake that people like Sanusi often make with their racist views and condescending words. He forgets that the culture and history of most of the southern empires and kingdoms predate that of the Fulani Caliphate by hundreds of years. 
 
17 years after Sanusi wrote this piece about southerners, I have decided to respond to him by sharing my views about the core North and its Fulani leaders. This is especially so because we have a hardline Fulani conservative at the helm of affairs in our country today. 
 
Sanusi wrote his views about the South in 1998 when his fellow northerner was Head of State, but I choose to write my views about the North, not when my fellow southerner is in power, but rather when a northerner is President. I have not taken offence at Emir Sanusi’s views about southerners and I sincerely hope that he and his people will not take offence at my views about core northerners. 
 
This essay will not only be deemed as being controversial but its contents will also be keenly contested and scrutinized. This is because I am going to express some home truths here which the majority of our people know to be true but few are prepared to voice. 
 
Conspiracy of silence 
 
I am making this intervention not out of hate but out of love and compassion for those who have lost their lives at the hands of our adversaries over the last 55 years. I am also mindful of the fact that every single person that is a member of the ruling class or that has held a position of leadership in this country between 1960 and today, including yours truly, has to take partial responsibility for the terrible things that our people have experienced over the years, for the criminal negligence that we have all indulged in, for the shameful conspiracy of silence that we appear to relish and for the abysmal and pitiable situation that we have found ourselves in as a people and as a nation. 
 
Those of us that are members of the ruling elite are all, in varying degrees, guilty and it is to partly ameliorate that sense of guilt that I feel constrained to speak out and expose the truth. 
 
I am not a racist or tribalist. I deplore violence and bloodshed. I have no hate in me for any individual or ethnic group and I am a firm believer in the view that all men are equal before God regardless of the circumstances of their birth, their creed, their tribe, their nationality or the color of their skin. Whilst I hold these truths to be self-evident , I also believe that it is incumbent upon those of us that lay claim to being leaders to always speak the truth about the history and unfolding events in our country no matter how uncomfortable that truth may be. 
 
Despite all the insults, threats, misrepresentation and, often times, slanderous and utterly bizarre allegations that I, my family and my loved ones have been subjected to over the years from ignorant, venal and hate-filled men, I shall be counted among those few voices. 
 
If nothing else that is good enough for me and with that alone I would have made a meaningful contribution to my nation’s history and done my forefathers proud. It is with this in mind that I urge readers to fasten their seat belts and consider the following contribution. 
 
When Cain killed his brother Abel, the Bible tells us that God asked him the following question: “Where is thy brother Abel?” 
 
Cain responded in a defiant manner: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” God responded by telling Cain that his brother’s blood was crying to Him from the ground for vengeance. From that point, Cain was afflicted with a terrible curse which could not be lifted because it came from the Living God. 
 
Wherever he went, the curse that goes with shedding his brother’s innocent blood followed him. This was made worse by the fact that he refused to repent or show remorse for what he had done. Everything that he did failed and everywhere he went he was despised, rejected, feared, hated and viewed with suspicion by his compatriots, colleagues and fellow men. 
 
Tragedy and misfortune stalked him and he ended up being nothing but a vagabond, a marauder, a parasite and a wanderer in foreign lands. He became a byword and a proverb: a herder of goats and cattle who lived and survived by guile, doublespeak, stealing, pillaging and intimidating others. He became the proverbial leech who made a headway in life only by benefiting from the sweat, labour and hard work of his hosts and benefactors, by sponging off whichever community gave him succour and by resorting to violence and bloodshed at the slightest opportunity and at the drop of a hat. 
 
He also acquired an obsession with controlling others and an insatiable lust for power and the perpetual domination, suppression and conquest of what he perceived as “lesser tribes and lesser people”. 
 
Open defiance 
 
Simply put, he was a dangerous predator who sought to milk others dry and conquer by guile and assimilation. There are comparisons to be made with Nigeria here. 
 
Sinister forces and dark elements from the deeply conservative core North have killed more Middle Belters and southerners than any other in our country over the last 55 years. Worse still, those forces do not just kill but they also establish their own communities in the land and territory of their victims and forcefully occupy it. They have refused to stop doing so and, to all intents and purposes, they have developed an insatiable blood lust which compels them to shed innocent blood at the slightest whim in order to subjugate others and to remain in power. 
 
The South, whom our British colonial masters once referred to as the “rich wife”, has effectively become the Abel of Nigeria whilst the conservative core North, whom they once called the “poor husband”, has now become the Cain. For many years, the Lord has been asking the core North what they have done to their southern and Middle Belt brothers and why they keep doing it. 
 
For years, the conservative core North has responded with defiance and anger and asked God, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The result of this open defiance and lack of remorse is simple and clear: It has attracted. God’s wrath. Is it any wonder that Boko Haram now ravages the core North? Is it any wonder that every single core northern leader that has ever ruled Nigeria since 1960 has either been killed or died in mysterious circumstances whilst on the throne or was removed in a military coup and then subjected to a number of years in detention? 
 
Is it any wonder that the core North is totally dependent on the rest of the country for its sustenance and economic survival? Is it any wonder that a UNICEF report, released a few years ago, stated that if Nigeria were to ever break up, that the core North would be the most impoverished, the most backward, the most unsustainable and the most barren area in the whole of the West African sub-region? 
 
Is it any wonder that they were viewed with so much suspicion by others that the core northern states were excised from the country by Major Gideon Orkar in his 1991 coup broadcast and asked to re-apply if they wanted to be part of Nigeria again? 
 
Is it any wonder that the leading south-western politician within the ruling All Peoples Congress (APC) is secretly complaining and quietly lamenting the fact that he was used in the 2015 elections by the core North simply to put one of their own back in power so that their hegemony could be resurrected and their agenda of perpetual and everlasting northern rule could be established forever? Is it any wonder that, according to a survey carried out this year by Global. 
 
Terror Index, which was published in the United Kingdom’s Independent Newspaper, that two of the four most deadly terrorist organisations in the world today are based in core northern Nigeria and are led, funded, peopled and inspired by some core northern Nigerians? 
 
According to the report, Nigeria’s Boko Haram is now officially the world’s most deadly terrorist organisation whilst what they have described as ‘’the Fulani militants’’ (aka Nigeria’s Fulani herdsmen) are number four. Is it any wonder that, according to the same Global Terror Index report, Nigeria is now the “third most terrorised nation in the world” whilst Iraq and Afghanistan remain the first and second and Syria and Pakistan remain the fourth and fifth respectively? Given this, is it any wonder that there are loud and increasingly persistent calls for self-determination in southern Nigeria? 
 
Child brides 
 
Is it any wonder that the core North is ravaged by poverty, disease, violence, strife, conflict, stagnation and bareness more than anywhere else in our country? Is it any wonder that, according to a 2015 UNICEF report, Nigeria has the ‘’highest number of child brides on the African continent’’ with no less than 23 million child brides in the North? 
 
Is it any wonder that, according to the World Health Organisation, northern Nigeria has the ‘’highest number of young girls in the world suffering from vagina vesicovaginal fistula (VVF)’’, a disease which comes as a consequence of sexual intercourse with young under age girls? 
 
Is it any wonder that many core North is afflicted with a self-serving and calculating ultra-conservative ruling elite who keep their own people in perpetual subjugation, darkness and bondage and who come from a distant foreign land called Fouta Jallon in modern-day Guinea? 
 
Is it any wonder that most core northerners name themselves after the towns and villages that they were born and raised in rather than after their families and forefathers? Is it any wonder that we have a core northern President who finds it difficult to stay at home? 
 
Is it any wonder that an influential leader from one of the core northern states, who later became a traditional ruler, was an Islamic fundamentalist in his youth, and was one of those that inspired and orchestrated the murder of Gideon Akaluka for “desecrating the Koran?” 
 
Is it any wonder that a core northern Nigerian by the name of Omar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, the ‘’underwear bomber’’ who tried to blow up an American airliner that was filled with passengers in Detroit, told the FBI that his ‘’most trusted mentor’’ and ‘’favorite uncle’’ was a well-known and leading core northern leader? Is it any wonder that Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, one of the most respected northern voices in the country, recently, said ‘’the northern Muslim elite laid the foundation for Boko Haram?”

 Nigeria Union in South Africa has condemned the killing of a 34-year-old housewife, Mrs Christiana Onyeka, by unidentified gunmen on Dec. 3. 
 
Onyeka, a mother of four and native of Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra, was killed in her husband`s office in Midrand, near Johannesburg.

Mr Ikechukwu Ayene, the President of the union, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Midrand, South Africa, on Saturday that it had reported the incident to the South African police and Nigerian mission. 
“The unjust killing of Nigerians in South Africa is becoming alarming. 
 
“We are worried that after reporting such killings to the police, we do not get the desired results. Most cases of Nigerian victims of murder are either abandoned or inconclusive,“ he said. 
 
Anyene said that the situation had become so bad because more women were getting killed. 
 
“Nigerian communities in South Africa are devastated by this gruesome murder. Mrs Onyeka was a hard working housewife, dedicated to the success of her husband`s business and welfare of Nigerians in South Africa,“ he said. 
 
Mrs Uzor Ekesi, the President, Nigerian Women Association, South Africa, decried the killing of Onyeka by unidentified gunmen. 
 
“The killing came to us as a big shock. We are scared and confused because women are now being killed.

A resident of the area, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, said a truckload of soldiers came to the Husainiya area and surrounded it and “all of a sudden we heard gun shots and many people died”. 
 
“The soldiers are still there and they have evacuated some of the corpses while others were taken by the site members” the witness said. 
 
Another witness told newsmen more than 20 corpses were laying on the ground. 
 
“The soldiers have killed many people here, possibly up to 20,” he said. “The leader of the sect, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky is leaving his home to where the soldiers are. He is saying he does not care if he is killed too.” 
 
The spokesperson of the Army, Sani Usman, could not be reached for comments at this time. 
 
The News Agency of Nigeria is however quoting Mr.Usman, a colonel, as saying the clash resulted from an assassination attempt on the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai. 
 
The Army spokesperson reportedly said it was some suspected shiites who first attacked the motorcade of Mr. Buratai, a lieutenant general. 
 
However NigerianEye is unable to independently confirm that version of event at this time. 
 
There has been a history of violence between members of the movement and the military. 
 
A similar clash last year led to the death of many members, including the sons of the movement’s leader, Ibrahim Zakzaky.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate degree of Letters by the Kaduna State University. 
 
Buhari got the honorary doctorate on Saturday, during the second Convocation ceremony of the University in Kaduna.

Speaking at the occasion, the President’s advice commended the institution’s development strides in terms of academic excellence and inculcating discipline in the students within its 11 years of existence. 
 
He suggested a review of the academic approaches owing to report that about 80% of the graduates from Nigerian universities find it very difficult to get employment every year, partly due to the curricula of the universities and other tertiary institutions, which lay emphasis on training for white-collar jobs. 
 
President Buhari said that Nigeria would need to increasingly globalize education through entrepreneurship if it would reduce the high rate of unemployment and poverty in the country. 
 
The President pushed the point further by mandating that all university students in Nigeria, regardless of their major, would need to study entrepreneurship during the academic career. 
 
He promised that his administration would embark on programmes that will ensure that youths are gainfully employed as part of efforts to reduce unemployment and insecurity in the country. 
 
The Nigerian economy, historically, has depended largely on oil revenues. As the country tries to diversify away from dependence on oil, the President maintained that entrepreneurship remains key to the future of the country’s socioeconomic development. 
 
This he noted could only be achieved if the youths are inculcated with the necessary skills and knowledge to be independent right from their days in school.

The second convocation of the Kaduna State University is for students who graduated from the institution between 2012 to 2015 academic sessions. 
 
Since its establishment in 2005, the University has continued to develop both in terms of infrastructure and academic excellence. 38 out of the 4,000 graduating students bagged first class in various disciplines. 
 
The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Quirix said that this feat could not have been achieved without the strong foundation laid down by the management and support from government. 
 
Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state, while eulogizing the successes so far recorded by the University in the area of entrepreneurship and leadership programmes, gave the assurance that his government would continue to support state owned tertiary institutions to develop by increasing their annual grants and employing additional staff.

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday declared that there will be no friend, no foe in the fight against corruption and that Nigeria must resolve to curtail corruption in all facets of the society for there to be significant success in the fight to eliminate it. 
 
He stated this in his keynote address titled, “Incorruptibility: a Spiritual Premise for Material Wellbeing”, at the annual Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation lecture held yesterday at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

According to the president, “The topic of discourse at this session, which is corruption, significantly ties into my vision for our great country, Nigeria, that we must kill corruption before corruption kills us.” 
 
The President said: “In Nigeria, two problems stare us in the face. First is that our laws need to be strengthened if we must realistically contend with the haze of corruption. The second is that we must correct the gaps in our legal system that are exploited to frustrate the process of justice. A number of anti-corruption cases have been rendered inconclusive due to legal limitations.” 
 
Dealing with corruption requires the collective will of every Nigerian, he said. 
 
“Without our collective will to resist corrupt acts as a people, it will be difficult to win the war. We in the leadership will provide the right example. We will not pay mere lip service to corruption. We will eschew it in every aspect of our lives. However, we are but few, in a country of more than 170 million people. We need the mass army of Nigerians to rise as one man, and stand for probity in both public and private lives. It is only then that we can be sure of dealing a mortal blow on corruption, which will engender a better country. 
 
“Quite frankly, the anti-corruption war is not strictly about me as a person, it is about building a country where our children, and the forthcoming generations, can live in peace and prosperity.” 
 
Corruption, Buhari said was responsible for dilapidated infrastructure round the country; poor healthcare; collapsed education; lack of public utilities; decayed social services, stressing that they “are all products of corruption, as those entrusted with public resources put them in their private pockets. 
 
“That must stop, if we want a new Nigeria. And that was why I said at another forum that people need not fear me, but they must fear the consequences of their actions. Corrupt acts will always be punished, and there will be no friend, no foe. We will strive to do what is fair and just at all times, but people who refuse to embrace probity should have every cause to fear. 
“Look at the corruption problem in the country, and tell me how you feel as a Nigerian. Our commonwealth is entrusted to leaders at different levels of governance, and instead of using the God-given resources to better the lot of the citizens, they divert them to private use. They then amass wealth in billions and trillions of naira, and other major currencies of the world, ill-gotten wealth which they cannot finish spending in several lifetimes over. This is abuse of trust, pure and simple. When you hold public office, you do it in trust for the people. When you, therefore, use it to serve self, you have betrayed the people who entrusted that office to you.” 
 
He wondered how Nigerians feel “year after year, when Transparency International (TI) releases its Corruption Perception Index and Nigeria is cast in the role of a superstar on corruption.” 
 
The President continued: “In 2011, out of 183 countries, Nigeria was 143 on the corruption ladder. In 2012, we were 139th out of 176. In 2013, we ranked 144 out of 177, and in 2014, we stood at 136th out of 174. Hardly a record to inspire anyone. In fact, it is sad, depressing and distressing. Our country can be known for better things other than corruption.” 
 
In the process of trying to recover stolen funds now, he said the government was seeking the cooperation of the countries were these loots were taken. “Time it was, when such nations may have overlooked our overtures for assistance to fight corruption. However, we now live in an era where corruption is anathema, looked upon as something that should be tackled head-on because the actions of the corrupt can have global impact.” 
 
Resolving the problem of corruption, he said transcended merely arresting and trying people that have held public office, “because, to curtail corruption, we have to reorder the mindset of all. Empirical facts have shown that even those who are critics today are most times not better than those they criticise. 
 
“When they are availed the same or similar opportunities, they act likewise. In other words, those who didn’t have the opportunity criticise and blow whistle but when they get into office; they become victims of the same thing they criticise. 
“Nigeria must grow beyond that point, and be populated by people with conviction, a new breed without greed, radically opposed to corruption. This points to the fact that curtailing corruption might require a more broadened social engineering. It, indeed, requires conforming with every mindset in the social order to the moral tenets in which propriety anchors as a way of life.” 
 
Nigeria, the President said had been brought almost to her knees by decades of corruption and mismanagement of the public treasury. 
 
“We must come to a point when we all collectively say Enough! That is collective will, and that is what will bring us to a new state and status. If this country will realise her potentials, and take her rightful place in the comity of nations, we must collectively repudiate corruption, and fight it to a standstill. It remains eternally true: if we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill Nigeria.” 
 
The President noted that his presence at the lecture was deliberate “as it emphasised the resolve of this government to interface with initiatives that are fundamentally patriotic and assisting in our path to socio-economic and political recovery.” 
 
Nigerians, he said sent a strong signal during the last general elections that they “needed leadership that could be relied upon to tackle the orgy of corruption in the country.” 
 
He lauded the Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation “for its impact on the development of ideas through its annual lecture series. 
 
The President said, “The fact that the themes of the lecture series have focused on critical puzzles bordering on human development lend credence and justification for the sustenance of the lecture series. 
 
“The decision of the Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation to choose corruption as the topic of discourse at this session is, therefore, encouraging to this government, pursuant to our vision that winning the war against corruption requires our synergy, a collectivisation of our resolve that corruption must be eliminated in the social psyche of the Nigerian nation. 
 
“It is no doubt that an event like this demands a lot of sacrifice financially and otherwise. Apart from the contribution of the lecture series to human development, it has also unveiled the genius personality of Emmanuel Onyechere Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe, whose philosophical insight is gradually finding place in the psyche of academics globally, particularly at a time when Africans are determined to rewrite their own history.”

The Nigerian Army has announced its unanimous decision to tackle the agitation for Biafra which pose threat to peace,unity,progress and the survival of Nigeria as a single entity.

The conference under theme ‘contemporary conflicts,human right and military operation’ noted that the need to articulates measures to constantly engage relevant stakeholders on all issues of human rights and civil military relationship. 
 
Nigerian Army also during the meeting identified the available capacity in Nigeria with local companies that can produce some of its equipments as well as resolved to institutionalize French language as an alternative language to use between Nigeria and her contiguous francaphone neighbours. 
 
The conference then appreciated the president Muhammad Buhari for his continued support to Nigerian Army in its effort to tackle the myriad of security challenges in Nigeria.

The National Population Commission (NPC), has disclosed its plan to recruit over one million officers to enable it cover the country effectively in the proposed 2017 Population Census.

The Chairman who was represented by the Commissioner representing Enugu, Festus Uzor, also stated that a strategy and implementation plan for the 2017 population census which outlined the methodology to be adopted, activities to be implemented and timeliness have been developed. 
 
He said that the Commission has been carrying out some of the pre-census activities as well as acquire some of the vital imageries needed for the proposed biometric census. 
 
“We have acquired High Resolution Imageries, required for the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) for the census.

Prof. Agu Mkpa, former Vice Chancellor of the Abia State University, Uturu, has proffered entrepreneurial development as a solution to the nation’s growing youth unemployment. 
 
Mkpa made the recommendation while delivering a lecture entitled ‘Entrepreneurial Development: A Panacea for Youth Unemployment in Nigeria’, on Friday at the Seventh Convocation lecture of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU).

He described youth unemployment as a “time bomb,” saying that it had the most broad-based devastating, most traumatic impact above all the societal ills facing the country. 
 
“The danger of youth unemployment is that it is the harbinger of numerous other national ills. It is the root cause of many other social ills. 
 
“There appears to be no other way out of this national `time bomb’ than entrepreneurial programmes.’’ 
He said that government’s capacity to absorb the yearly school leavers in the public and civil service was limited and urged the youths to come to terms with the painful reality. 
 
“Our orientation should therefore be toward entrepreneurship development,’’ he said, while urging the youths to explore and take advantage of other existing opportunities around them. 
 
Mkpa further urged the youths to be self-confident and believe in their God-given potentials and capabilities. 
“They must be able to set progressive goals and pursue them to their logical conclusions,’’ he said. 
 
Mkpa advised the youths to venture into agriculture and agro-allied enterprises, building and construction engineering, as well as fabrication work. 
 
He also suggested other areas as environmental and waste management business, hospitality and tourism business, oil and gas business, among other entrepreneurial activities. 
 
Mkpa also charged the government to provide the needed conducive environment for entrepreneurship to thrive by providing electricity, water, good road network and other facilities. 
 
He advocated for special budgetary allocation for entrepreneurial education in the nation’s higher institutions. 
“Many tertiary institutions that have not taken entrepreneurial studies seriously need to face serious sanctions in order to sit up,’’ he said. 
  
Mkpa noted lack of political will on the part of government to accord vocational and technical education the place of significance they deserved, as part of the impediments against entrepreneurial development in the country. 
 
He said that the neglect of vocational and technical education by successive governments over the years aggravated the problem of youth unemployment. 
 
In his remark, Prof. Hilary Edeoga, Vice Chancellor of MOUAU, said that the university set up the Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies as part of its efforts to equip graduates with functional education that could make them job creators rather than job seekers.’’

The Nasarawa State governor, Tanko Al-Makura, on Friday announced the release of 78 persons awaiting trial in five prisons in the state. 
 
Mr. Al-Makura announced this during a visit to Keffi Prison in Keffi Local Government Area of the state. 
 
The governor said the gesture was to decongest the prisons and give the freed inmates a sense of belonging and the opportunity to contribute their quarter positively to national development.

“Today, on behalf of the Nasarawa State government, I am freeing 78 inmates from the five federal prisons in the state. 
 
“This is part of the state government’s support to President Muhammadu Buhari’s efforts in decongesting prisons across the country as well as to make the inmates responsible members of the society,” Mr. Al-Makura said 
He re-iterated his administration’s commitment to partner with the ministry of Interior in improving the condition of prisons. 
 
The minister of interior, Abdulrahman Danbazau, commended the state government for coming to the aid of the inmates through payment of their fines, saying the gesture would reduce the burden of prison authority. 
 
Mr. Danbazau advised the freed persons to reciprocate the gesture through good conduct by avoiding any form of crime. 
 
The minister urged all stakeholders to ensure speedy administration of justice to decongest the prisons. 
 
The Nasarawa State controller of Prisons, Hussaini Mohammed, said prisons in the state had been congested, saying the governor deserves commendation for the gesture. 
 
The comptroller commended the governor for providing three buses to ease transportation of prison inmates and sending a caterpillar to clear the road that connects Keffi Prisons with Small and Medium Security Prisons.

Six policemen dismissed from the Ondo State Police Command over alleged extortion have appealed to the Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Solomon Arase, to reinstate them, claiming that they were framed.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday on their trial before dismissal, the team leader, Insp. Ogunborode Oluremi, claimed they were innocent and urged Arase to take a second look at their case. 
 
Oluremi listed the affected policemen as Insp. Ogunborode Oluremi (team leader), Sgt. Osho Akindayo, Cpl. Adesina Olarewaju, Cpl. Simon Osademe, Cpl. Gabriel Adejoro and Cpl. Oluwamunewa Tope. 
 
Narrating the circumstances of the case, Ogunborode said the team was on bank patrol in the Akure metropolis, when they were summoned to appear before the Ondo Command’s Police Provost for allegedly extorting money from one Mohammed Isah. 
 
“As I speak with you, the person in question and my team have never met face to face. We are shocked that we were dismissed for doing nothing. We were dismissed on July 4 and detained for four months in the cell. 
 
“We were dismissed after two days of Orderly Room Trial. The Commissioner of Police, then in Ondo State, CP Isaac Eke, approved the dismissal of five of my colleagues, while AIG Helen Adeyemi of Zone 11 approved my dismissal as an Inspector,’’ he said. 
 
The Inspector said the team was attached to the Area Command, Akure, when the incident happened on July 3, 2015. 
 
He added that time had proved their innocence, as the fellow who made the complaint against them was later arrested in Lagos over a similar incident. 
 
Ogunborode said he was unhappy with the way the matter was handled by officers of the Ondo Command, including DC Isola Dambaruba, who was in charge of Operations, Alhassan Mamuda, DC Administration and Anthony Omeh, a CSP. 
 
He claimed that the above-mentioned senior officers never believed in the team, even when it was clear then that the complainant was lying. 
The Lagos Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni, confirmed the arrest of the complainant in Lagos for attempting to implicate some policemen in Lagos, just as he had done in Akure. 
 
Owoseni said intelligence reports had showed that the man was a fraudster. 
 
He said Mohammed Isah was specialised in lying against policemen, with a view to defrauding the Force. 
The commissioner stressed that the suspect was arrested after lying against some policemen in Lagos, claiming that the officers collected N188, 200 from him. 
 
“The team was invited and interrogated and it was discovered that the suspect never had any contact with them. 
 
“Investigations revealed that the suspect had made similar allegations previously against some policemen in Anambra, Ondo and four other state commands. 
 
“All he does is to copy the registration numbers on police patrol vehicles and then he goes to the headquarters to complain that the officers using that particular vehicle had extorted him. 
 
“Many police officers have been punished, six were dismissed in the Ondo State Command with his false allegations. The suspect has confessed to the crime and exonerated the officers who have been so punished or dismissed,’’ Owoseni said. 
 
The commissioner, however, assured that he would take up the case of the dismissed officers in the Ondo State Command with the appropriate authority.

Bishop David Oyedepo, the President and founder of the church disclosed this on Saturday at the close of the five-day prayer convention titled: “Shiloh 2015’’.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who monitored the live telecast of the programme in Abuja reports that Oyedepo appreciated God for the successful conclusion of the convention. 
 
The clergy disclosed that delegation from the foreign nations to the camping ground was more than 3,000. 
 
Oyedepo said that from the church records, more than one million worshippers participated in the convention at various local churches telecast centres across the globe. 
 
He said that the church would embark on the construction of a multi-million naira “Faith Theatre’’. 
 
The project, according to the clergy is “novel’’, and will have a 100,000 seating capacity-auditorium. 
 
NAN reports that in a three minutes video clip of the architectural design of the project, it contained shopping malls, modern camping accommodation, fuelling station, car parks, bookshops, baptismal pool, among others. 
 
The clergy expressed the belief in God that the project would be completed in good time. 
 
He recalled that the church had recorded a similar feat in 1999, with the construction of its present site with a 50,000 capacity auditorium within 12 months. 
 
The clergy also disclosed that the next year prayer convention would hold from Dec. 6 to Dec. 10. 
 
Meanwhile, no fewer than 1,000 residents of Jos South Local Government in Plateau on Saturday besieged the Living Faith Church, Rantya, Plateau, for the closing events of Shiloh 2015. 
NAN reports that most of the residents that attended the event also beamed live via telecast from Ota, Ogun State to the satellite church in Jos, testified to healings of various health issues. 
 
Oyedepo had decreed the rise of Nigeria and other African nations in world affairs and had predicted an end to mindless bloodletting globally. 
 
He said that expectations in some quarters that Nigeria would disintegrate would not come to pass. 
Oyedepo announced that soon African nations would be listed among some of the top nations of the world. 
 
He said that this would happen because of the revivals taking place in Christendom in Africa arising in more mega churches in the continent.

Africa’s first football pitch lit solely by the players’ movements has been inaugurated in Lagos, the economic hub of power-starved Nigeria, at a ceremony attended by US-Senegalese rapper Akon. 
 
The technology, invented by a young British engineer, consists of placing electronic tiles under the artificial turf, which is converted into power by kinetic energy.

Each time a player steps on a tile, seven watts of electricity are generated and sent to a battery. 
 
The stored power helps to feed six powerful but low consumption LED floodlights that shine on the pitch. Solar panels around the pitch complement the technology, stocking electricity throughout the day. 
 
The system has already been installed at a football pitch in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, in football-mad Brazil, which hosted the 2014 World Cup. 
 
“It’s brilliant,” said Kusagba Oluwadamilola, an 18-year-old sports student, who plays for the football team at the Federal College of Education (Technical), where the pitch has been set up. 
 
“It’s going to be really useful. Until now we couldn’t play at night,” he told AFP. 
 
The man behind the technology, Laurence Kemball-Cook, 30, launched his own company, Pavegen, four years ago. 
 
Since then, the invention has been installed in 150 locations across the globe from parks and airports to shops and even dance floors. 
 
Inspiring new generations with new technology is essential, he said, particularly in Nigeria where residents often have just a few hours of power a day because of an erratic electricity supply. 
 
As a result, households and companies are forced to rely on heavily polluting generators. 
 
Kemball-Cook said the pitch would not only help “create a community” but also showed the need to diversify Africa’s energy mix. 
 
“We need solar, we need other solutions as well… we need it right now, we don’t want to be using these fossil fuel generators. We need to be using more renewable sources of power,” he said. 
 
With the initial cost of solar energy high, Kemball-Cook said he hoped to bring down the cost of the tiles by mass production to as little as $50 (45 euros) per square metre through economies of scale. 
Rap superstar Akon made a surprise appearance at the launch of the newly built pitch on Thursday to the delight of the students. 
 
He has been involved in renewable energy projects with his Akon Lighting Africa, created in 2004, whose objective is to electrify Africa with solar energy. 
 
The project is already running in 15 countries and he is aiming for 34 by 2020. 
 
“I am proud to be here,” said the singer and producer, who was born in the United States but spent his childhood in Senegal. 
 
“Climate change makes things different today,” he said, as delegates to a UN conference in Paris thrashed out a historic agreement to cut global warming. 
 
The Pavegen tiles are “an extraordinary concept for Africans who play football every day,” he added. 
 
Football is the king of sports in Nigeria, whose national team the Super Eagles has won the African Cup of Nations three times, as well as gold at the 1996 Olympic Games. 
 
“This is an amazing concept… to be able to generate energy while you’re playing football to me is a no brainer to help build new renewable sources and also to support the entrepreneur that comes up with this invention,” he added. 
 
The development of renewable energy could create businesses and jobs in Africa, he added. 
 
Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell, partners of Pavegen, financed the installation of the pitch. 
 
The company is the main oil explorer in Nigeria — Africa’s number one producer — and has been widely criticised for the environmental impact of its activities in theNiger Delta region. 
 
Pavegen and Shell have learnt lessons from the Rio pitch, where residents objected to having to pay by the hour. There will be no charge at the Lagos pitch.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged Nigerians, irrespective of leanings, to rally round the APC–led government to end Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East. 
 
Chief Olisa Metuh, PDP National Publicity Secretary, gave the advice on Friday in Abuja when he received the executive of an NGO, North Youth Network.

The NGO, led by its President, Mr Mike Msuaan, was on a courtesy visit to the National Publicity Secretary. 
 
Metuh said: “the current insurgency is not against any political party, but against Nigeria and its citizens and as such, demands the collective efforts of all Nigerians to defeat.” 
 
“It is God that joins Nigerians together nobody or organisation has the right to separate them. 
 
“PDP remains supportive of the efforts of the Federal Government to see to the end of the insurgency.’’ 
 
The PDP spokesman said that as an opposition party, the PDP would be constructive in its criticism of government prgrammes and actions for the development of the country. 
 
He, however, advised the government to guide against being selective in its programmes to the people, to ensure maximum dividends of democracy to the people. 
 
Metuh reiterated that the commitment of the PDP to remain an open, transparent and responsible political party. 
 
Commenting on the inconclusive governorship election in Bayelsa, the PDP image maker, called on INEC to conclude the poll and similar elections within 30 days. 
 
He said that timely conclusion of the election would give the people more voice to contribute to issues bothering on national development. 
 
Metuh commended the executive and members of the NGO for their commitment to the concept of being positive agent of development and urged them to continue in that light. 
 
Earlier, Msuaan commended Metuh for the matured way he had been handling information management of the PDP. 
 
He described the PDP as the `most constructive party’ in its criticism of the governing party and urged Metuh to continue to be the “voice of the voiceless,’’ to ensure good governance. 
 
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of an award of excellence on Metuh by the NGO. 
 
Members of the NGO, cutting across the 36 states of the federation attended the occasion.

In another first, women were allowed to stand as candidates in the polls for municipal councils, the country’s only elected public chambers. 
 
“Now women have a voice,” Awatef Marzooq told AFP after casting her ballot for the first time at a school in the capital.

“I cried. This is something that we only used to see on television taking place in other countries.” 
 
Despite the presence of female contenders for the first time, Marzooq said she picked a male candidate because of his ideas including more nurseries. 
 
“I voted for a man, but I hope a woman will win,” she said. 
 
Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy with some of the world’s tightest restrictions on women, including a ban on driving. 
 
It was the last country to allow only men to vote. 
 
In a reminder of the continued gap between the two sexes, polling stations were segregated. 
 
Outside one centre for women in Riyadh, cars driven by men arrived every few minutes with female voters dressed in black robes. 
 
Some of the women asked the media not to take their photograph before they were whisked away. 
– ‘Breaking the barrier’ – 
 
Mohammed al-Shammari, who had just dropped off his daughter, a teacher, said he had encouraged her to vote. 
 
“We want to break this barrier,” he said. 
 
“As long as she has her own place and there is no mixing with men, what prevents her from voting? We support anything that does not violate sharia (Islamic law),” he said. 
 
More than 900 women are running, competing with nearly 6,000 men for seats. They overcame a number of obstacles to participate in the landmark poll. 
 
Female candidates could not directly meet any male voters during their campaigns. 
 
“This is really silly,” said Sahar Hassan Nasief, a women’s rights activist in the Red Sea city of Jeddah. 
 
She said men and women were already mixing to a degree in the workplace, supermarkets and other locations, although restaurants, banks and other public places include separate sections for “families” and single men. 
 
Nasief said the election campaign was “not really” fair because of the segregation and a rule against any candidates publishing their own picture, but it “felt really good” to vote. 
 
Female voters said registration was hindered by bureaucratic obstacles, a lack of awareness of the process and its significance, and the fact that women could not drive themselves to sign up. 
 
As a result, women account for less than 10 percent of registered voters and few, if any, female candidates are expected to be elected. 
 
“Even if men take all the seats, I feel we still won,” said Munifa, a nurse who lives outside Hafr al-Batin city in the kingdom’s northeast. 
 
“I have a voice and it matters. It doesn’t matter if I vote for a man or a woman,” said another northeastern resident, who gave her name only as Noura, 24. 
 
One-third of seats on Saudi Arabia’s 284 councils are appointed by the municipal affairs ministry, leaving women optimistic that they will at least be assigned some of them. 
– ‘Lack of information’ – 
 
At a male polling centre in central Riyadh, Ahmad Soulaybi, 78, said he did not know enough about female candidates in his region to support any. 
 
“I voted for a man because I lack information about the women,” he told AFP. 
 
According to election commission data, nearly 1.5 million people aged 18 and over are registered to vote. 
 
This includes about 119,000 women, out of a total native Saudi population of almost 21 million. 
 
Oil-rich Saudi Arabia boasts modern infrastructure of highways, skyscrapers and ever-more shopping malls. 
 
But women still face many restrictions, and must get permission from male family members to travel, work or marry. 
 
Ruled by the al-Saud family of King Salman, Saudi Arabia has no elected legislature and faces intense Western scrutiny of its rights record. 
 
The kingdom’s first municipal ballot was in 2005, for men only. 
 
A slow expansion of women’s rights began under Salman’s predecessor Abdullah who announced four years ago that women would join the elections this year. 
 
“It’s only a start, and it’s a very good start,” Nasief said. “Nothing comes easily.”
