Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has said it is ridiculous for people to suggest that he is indifferent to wanton killings across the nation.<br />
<br />
He reassured Nigerians that ending banditry remained a key priority of his administration.<br />
<br />
In a statement by Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja on Saturday, Buhari said that he would do whatever it takes to ensure the country’s security system confronts these public enemies with merciless determination.<br />
<br />
Buhari was reacting to the recent spike in reported incidents of banditry and kidnappings in some parts of the country.<br />

The president condoled with all those affected by the unfortunate events.<br />
<br />
Buhari described as ridiculous allegation of indifferent being levelled against him in some quarters.<br />
<br />
“How can I be happy and indifferent to the senseless killings of my fellow citizens by bandits?<br />
<br />
“I am human and I understand the pains of the victims and their families who have been traumatised and impoverished by constant ransom demands by bandits.<br />
<br />
“The politicisation of tragedy reveals the darkest sides of our primitive politics. Almost every week, I summon my security chiefs to get an update on the strategies being devised to defeat these mass murderers.<br />
<br />
“There is no issue that dominates my mind every 24 hours like security, because as an elected President, protecting life and property remains primary function of my administration.<br />
<br />
“I constantly listen to our security personnel in order to understand their problems and needs, and I have never hesitated to attend to those needs in terms of motivating and equipping them to respond effectively to our security challenges.<br />
<br />
“It is therefore ridiculous to suggest that I am indifferent to these killings.<br />
<br />
“I have ordered rapid and robust deployment of troops to all the areas currently under attack from bandits and we are determined to tackle this challenge ferociously until these remorseless killers are crushed and utterly defeated,” Buhari said.<br />
<br />
He however, called on communities affected by banditry to support and cooperate with the security agencies, particularly the recently launched Operation Puff Adder to battle bandits and kidnappers.<br />
<br />
The President said it was regrettable that bandits had informants within some communities and utterly reprehensible that certain communities had signed protection deals with bandits at the expense of other communities, thereby creating complications and frustrating government’s intervention<br />
<br />
He appealed to communities to report suspicious movements of the bandits into their areas within the shortest available opportunity, especially considering the fact that “intelligence is critical to detecting, frustrating, neutralising and defeating the criminals.”

“Yes we see him in the Villa going about the business of delivering governance and not looking tired at all. But Seeing the energy with which he majestically rushed down the stairs from the plane late last night, I thanked God who gives all things, including health.<br />

“I also thanked Nigerians who gave him the second chance to lead them. They made a great choice. And they won’t regret it. “In Jordan, we are treated with great respects because we are Buhari’s people, we are Nigerians.<br />

“Although we are neither Arabs nor North Africans, Pres. Buhari has been invited to speak at the opening of this year’s World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa.<br />

The Akure division of the Court of Appeal has said the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the September governorship election in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke was eligible to contest the election.<br />

With the ruling, the controversies surrounding the eligibility of the lawmaker to contest the election or hold the office as a governor might have ended.<br />

The Appeal Court in its ruling dismissed an appeal against the judgment of an Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo which had earlier confirmed the eligibility of Adeleke to contest the governorship election.<br />
<br />
An Osun State High Court had earlier ruled that Adeleke was qualified to contest for the governorship election, having been educated up to secondary school level.<br />
<br />
The petitioners, however, proceeded to appeal against the ruling, maintaining that the Senator was not qualified and therefore Dr Akin Ogunbiyi who is the second runner up at the governorship primary should be declared the winner of the primary election of the party.<br />
<br />
The Appeal Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo state capital in its ruling dismissed the appeal on three grounds, affirming the judgment of the lower court that confirmed the eligibility of Adeleke.<br />
<br />
The first ground was that the court has no jurisdiction to hear the case.<br />
<br />
The second was that the sponsored petitioner; one Kingsley Awosiyan from Ife Central has no locus standi to file the case and third was that the matter was brought to court outside the stipulated 14 days after the conduct of the Governorship primary election.<br />
<br />
Reacting to the judgment, counsel to Adeleke, Nathaniel Oke said the latest judgment has knocked out the judgment of an Abuja High Court and rendered its conclusion ineffective, null and void with no effect on the candidacy of the PDP candidate for the September 2018 gubernatorial election.<br />
<br />
He said the Abuja High court judgment had contradicted the Osogbo High court verdict by rejecting testimonies of WAEC, an examination body which in a sworn affidavit confirmed that Ademola Adeleke sat for its examination with attached results.

City Round gathered that while the murderer hails from Umuohum Umuna in the Onuimo LGA of the state, the slain teenager, who was to sit for Senior Secondary Certificate Examination in June, hailed from Ikpem.<br />

The source said, “The boy and the girl are classmates and of the same age. The boy had repeatedly asked her out but she refused.<br />
<br />
“She reported the boy’s disturbances to her parents, who reprimanded him but he kept on disturbing the girl.<br />
<br />
“Frustrated, the boy ambushed the girl and stabbed her to death. The community was about setting the boy’s father’s house ablaze when the police intervened.”<br />
<br />
When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the incident, stating that the suspect had been arrested.<br />
<br />
He said “One Chibuzo Ohaneme of Umuohum Umuna, Onuimo LGA was arrested for the murder of his friend, Olamma Ekwebelem of Umuoli Ikpem.<br />
<br />
“The suspect stabbed the victim in her stomach and she died. As I speak to you, the case file and the suspect have been transferred to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Owerri, for further investigation.”

Indigenes of Zamfara State, resident in Abuja, have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently intervene and stop the killings and kidnappings currently going on in the state.<br />

The indigenes, who held a protest in Abuja on Saturday, decried the insecurity in the State which has resulted in apprehension, displacements of communities and loss of lives.<br />

The convener of the protest, Miss Fatimah Mustapha said that their action was to call the attention of government to the gruesome killings and cases of kidnappings going on in Zamfara.<br />

Also, Kadaria Ahmed, a journalist, who participated in the protest, urged the President to direct security personnel to rise to the situation.<br />

“We have the challenge of security situation all over the country, but that of Zamfara is clearly bad. We are tired of mass burials and that is why we are calling on PMB to intervene.<br />
<br />
“Nobody is talking of these killings now among our leaders, and this is apparently disgusting. This issue involves lives and people deserve to be safe whereever they live in this country,’’ she said.<br />
<br />
Mr Zaharuddeen Bello-Imam, a former Director General on Social Media to Governor Abdullaziz Yari of Zamfara, said the Federal Government should take decisive action against the kidnappers and bandits operating in the state.<br />
<br />
According to Bello-Imam, there is a need for the total overhaul of the security apparatus of the state to control the situation before the killing and kidnapping get out of hand<br />

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, on Saturday, revealed that he once withdrew $10 million just to look at it and prove to himself that he was indeed rich.<br />

He said this at the Mo Ibrahim governance weekend in Abidjan, while he was chatting with the convener, Ibrahim.<br />

In the video, which was shared on the YouTube page of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, Dangote said, “The way it is that when you first start business, your target is to make your first million. Fine, I did that.<br />

“After a year or so, I realised that I had much more, and I said ok, fine, all these numbers are just written numbers.<br />

“One day I went to a bank, and at that time, there were no restrictions, and I wrote a cheque and cashed $10m from the bank and put it in the boot of my vehicle, and I went home and I opened it and I looked at $10m and I said ‘now I believe I have money’.”<br />

There was pandemonium in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State as a hilux van belonging to the Nigerian Army allegedly knocked down a yet-to-be identified female pedestrian said to be apparently heading towards her home at Ogbor Hill part of the city.<br />

The incident according to reports took place at the popular Waterside Bridge along Aba/Ikot-Ekpene Expressway on Friday evening.<br />

Sources at the popular Aba abattoir located within the area stated that the incident happened at about 6PM when the soldiers were driving against traffic as there was gridlock that usually greet the Aba-Ikot Ekpene axis of the expressway especially in the evening, though they alleged that the heavy gridlock was because of the presence of a police team at the end of the bridge, conducting stop and search operation.<br />

According to the sources, the soldiers immediately rushed out of their van to carry the victim into their vehicle to unknown destination.<br />

The sources who could not ascertain whether the soldiers were responding to a distress call said that the woman’s chances of survival were slim because of the impact of the accident on her as she was said to be bleeding when she was taken off the scene by the soldiers.<br />

A source who claimed to have witnessed the accident said that it could have been avoided if only the soldiers were not on a high speed even while they were driving against traffic.<br />
<br />
<br />
According to the source, the over-speeding patrol van rammed into the woman while she was trying to cross over to the other side of the road.<br />
<br />

“This accident could have been avoided if the army van didn’t drive against traffic. They were not only driving against traffic, they were also over- speeding.<br />
<br />
<br />
“There was a heavy traffic at the bridge as usual every evening. The soldiers decided to ply one-way with heavy speed. I wonder why a good driver who is plying one-way on a double lane road will still be over- speeding?<br />
<br />
<br />
“I don’t know why soldiers are always in a hurry in the streets of Aba when their vehicles are moving. They always want all of us to disappear whenever they’re passing notwithstanding the circumstances. I don’t know if that woman will survive.”<br />

<br />
Adding his voice, another eyewitness who simply gave his name as Lucky said, “Everyone shifted behind when they noticed it was an army van that hit the woman.<br />

<br />
“Aba people were getting agitated and the situation almost escalated, but most of us reasonably moved away from the scene as they carried the body into their van.<br />
<br />
<br />
“You know how they behave. If you try to ask questions or even make some moves that may even help them, they could tag you anything and waste your precious life.<br />
<br />
<br />
“May be they took her to hospital, but I expect them to reach her family as soon as possible and tell them what happened to her because it was an avoidable accident.”<br />
<br />
<br />
A military who pleaded anonymous debunked the insinuations that the woman was dead, but stated that she was rushed to a private medical facility where she was promptly attended to.<br />

<br />
Though the source could not ascertain whether the soldiers were responding to a distress call when probed on why the soldiers were driving against traffic as alleged, it disclosed that the woman who is a sister-in-law to a top officer in a sister security agency was moved to Port Harcourt, Rivers State Saturday morning on the directives of her brother-in-law.

Revered comedian, Ali Baba has condemned the pace of the Nigerian legal system. He cited the example of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudi Onuamadike, popularly known as Evans.<br />

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday said that Nigeria at this point requires the youths to be highly skillful in order to solve the problem of unemployment, security and youth restiveness.<br />

The President, who was a Visitor at the 31st Convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), stated that the era of handing certificates to graduates without self-sustaining skills is no longer sustainable.<br />
<br />
<br />
Buhari who was represented by the State Minister of Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka, observed that the growth and establishment of new industries to absorb the graduates is rather too slow.<br />
<br />
<br />
According to him, “there is a need to re-double efforts in turning out graduates with self-sustaining, globally competitive skills and talents for the realization of national goals of building a free, democratic, just and egalitarian society, a united, strong and self-reliant nation”.<br />

He continued that, “our universities are also challenged to key into modern trends in Computing and Information Technology, Cyber security, artificial intelligence, solar and alternative energies and modern biomedical technology, which is where the future is headed”.<br />

The President assured that, “on our part as government, we remain committed to changing the negative narratives of our universities by making effective and efficient policies that will place our higher education at the right pedestal”.<br />
<br />
<br />
He disclosed further that the Federal Government has completed the energy audit of 37 Federal Universities and is set to award the contracts for the commencement of Independent Power Plants in those Universities, “when completed, it will put an end to the perennial problem of power challenge in all Federal Universities in Nigeria”.<br />
<br />
<br />
Earlier in his speech, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Francis Eze, said that the University within the available resources has continued to provide facilities and equipment for effective teaching, learning and research.<br />
<br />
<br />
He however noted that the University urgently needs a befitting Senate building, staff quarters, a sustainable power supply and refurbishment of existing old buildings and other facilities.<br />
<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, 2,506 were awarded with degrees with 42 bagging First Class Honours.<br />

No fewer than 1,400 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) including the elderly, women and children from Fufore in Adamawa are complaining of acute food supply in the camp.<br />
<br />

Malam Bakura Umar, an IDP and leader of IDPs in Fufore Camp, disclosed this to the newsmen on Saturday in Yola.<br />
<br />
<br />
Umar complained that for the past three months the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had not supplied food to them.<br />
<br />
<br />
“About 1,400 IDPs, mostly women, children and elderly people are facing starvation due to acute food supply in Fufore Camp.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
“For the past three months, NEMA didn’t supply food for us and we are facing serious living conditions.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Because of the acute food supply both men and women from the camp had to go out to Fufore town and other nearby villages to look for food in order to survive,” Umar said.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said they were in the camp since 2014 and NEMA used to supply food items for them on monthly basis for every household living in the camp.<br />
<br />
<br />
The chairman said the IDPs in the camp were from Bama, Gwoza and Gamboru Ngala in Borno state.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said they were brought to the camp from Republic of Cameroon after Boko Haram overran their villages and towns in 2013 and they escaped to Cameroon for safety.<br />
<br />
<br />
He appealed to appropriate authorities concerned to come to their aid.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
When contacted, Alhaji Abani Garki, the NEMA Operational Officer in charge of Adamawa and Taraba dismissed the starvation claims and described it as “false alarm”.<br />
<br />
<br />
Garki said that the agency was aware about the short delay in supply of the food to the camp.<br />
<br />
<br />
“The Agency is aware about the short delay of regular monthly food supply to households in Fufore camp but there was nothing like starvation in the camp.<br />
<br />
<br />
“In fact the delay was not as they claimed because we experienced a short delay of food supply in January this year due to some logistic challenges which affected the following months of February and March.<br />
<br />
<br />
“The Agency is trying all it can to ensure the IDPs are being taking care of properly,” Garki said.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that the Federal Government was taking very good care of the IDPs including children education, healthcare provision and food supply.<br />

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has directed all members of the party that instituted court cases against the party to withdraw them or face sanctions.<br />

The deputy national publicity secretary of the PDP, Diran Odeyemi, said in a statement on Thursday that the party considered myriads of cases instituted against it by its members as inimical to the successes it has achieved in the last few years.<br />

<br />
The party is apparently disturbed by the ruling against the candidacy of the governorship candidate of the party in Osun, Ademola Adeleke, by a high court in Bwari, Abuja and other outstanding litigations.<br />
<br />
<br />
Adeleke, a serving senator, was recently declared the winner of September 22 governorship election by the Osun governorship election petition tribunal, which conducted its sittings in Abuja.<br />

But the contest of the party’s governorship ticket for the Osun election by Akin Ogunbiyi has remained an internal concern which had further compounded the challenges of Adeleke.<br />
<br />
<br />
Ogunbiyi had earlier denied any involvement in the travails of Mr Adeleke at the courts, with particular reference to the Tuesday’s court judgment nullifying his candidature as PDP’s flag bearer in the last governorship election.<br />
<br />
<br />
Odeyemi however, said any PDP member with genuine interest in the party must not make himself available to be used by elements that wanted to slow down its progress through needless litigation.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We consider it inimical to our progress as a vibrant political party the myriad of cases instituted against PDP by members who are expected to be part of the concerted efforts towards being the ruling party in Nigeria,” he said.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We can’t continue to struggle under the yoke of needless litigations when we intend to return to power both at federal level and in other states that are out of control of PDP at the moment.”<br />
<br />
<br />
Odeyemi reminded members of the decision of the National Executive Council (NEC) to sanction any member, no matter how highly placed, who, through court cases constitute themselves as a cog in the wheel of progress of the party, adding that some members had been expelled from the party in the recent past for same reason.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We are monitoring situations in Osun, Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos and other states across the country regarding court matters instituted by our members,” he said.<br />

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), says it has confirmed 16 new cases of Lassa fever from five states in Nigeria.<br />

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu, disclosed this in Abuja on Saturday ,while given an update about the disease and effort by the centre.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that the 16 new cases have now brought the number of confirmed cases to 526 out of the 2,034 suspected cases since Jan. 1 in 21 states.<br />
<br />
<br />
He also said that a total of 121 deaths had been recorded since the onset of the outbreak.<br />
<br />
<br />
Ihekweazu said Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, w Ebonyi, Plateau, Taraba, FCT, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Kwara, Benue, Rivers, Kogi, Enugu, Imo, Delta, Oyo, Kebbi and Cross River states have each recorded at least one confirmed case.<br />

He also confirmed that one health care worker was affected in Plateau state, bringing it to a total of 17 healthcare workers in seven states since the outbreak of the disease.<br />
<br />
<br />
The NCDC boss also said that 29 patients have been hospitalized at the designated centres.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that 10 were hospitalized in Irrua, 9 in Owo, three in Abakiliki, two in Bauchi, three in Plateau, two in Taraba.<br />
<br />
<br />
Ihekweazu said a total of 6,489 people suspected to have contacts with those infected had been identified across 20 states.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that 1,443 of the suspected contacts were being followed up, while 4,983 had completed the mandatory 21 days of follow up to and have been declared  symptom free.<br />
<br />
<br />
He also said that 112 symptomatic contacts have been identified, of which 55 tested positive.<br />
<br />
<br />
The NCDC boss assured that the National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Emergency Operations Centre will continue to coordinate the response activities at all levels.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a reaction to the trial and eventual resignation of suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen on Friday said no one was above the law and that era of impunity were totally gone.<br />

The party said a time is coming when a sitting President who misbehaves will also be docked for wrongdoing.<br />
<br />
<br />
The party insisted that the CJN’s resignation on Thursday vindicated the action taken against him by President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the party’s earlier call for his resignation.<br />
<br />
<br />
The position of the party was made known by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu.<br />
<br />

Onilu told newsmen in his office that the resignation of the suspended CJN should have been the first step for him to take when it became obvious that he made the mistake of not properly declaring his assets as required by law.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said with the CJN standing trial for non-declaration of assets and the previous trial of the Senate President for the same purpose, it is gradually becoming clear to public office holders that there is nobody above the law in the country.<br />
<br />
<br />
His words: “The issue we have in this country is that many people, especially those who have been part of the impunity of the past, are struggling badly to adjust to the reality of rule of law.<br />
<br />
<br />
“There is so much struggle to allow the past. It is not good enough for us as a country to allow it go. All of us must rise and face the future; a future of promise and a future of change, so that we can move to the ‘Next Level’.<br />
<br />
<br />
“When this happened, the PDP and some of their allies in the civil societies read the barometer of politics, and we do know that until we rise above sentiments, no matter what part of the divide you find yourself, we must realise that this is an issue that has to do with our country. That is the only way we can progress.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We knew right from the beginning that the allegations against the former Chief Justice of Nigeria were too serious to be swept under the carpet, and we know that the President does not act on frivolities.<br />
<br />
<br />
“He must have done his background checks and must have gotten good information to have taken the action he took, especially when there was basis for the action that can be legally proven.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Those lawyers, so-called Senior Advocates of Nigeria, who had over the years dipped their hands along with some of these judicial officers into the till of this country, continued to lampoon the President, lampoon the APC and blame this government that is doing its best to right several of the wrongs that we have been used to.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We were actually the one trying to deepen democracy. And this party rose in the defence of the President because we understand what the President was doing and that he meant well, and we know the real purpose that drives his actions.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Now, events have proven the President right. Events have proven the party, APC, right. Events have proven those Nigerians who believe Nigeria first and any other things after – events have proven them right.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We all can only be hiding behind one finger. Otherwise, we knew Nigerians, reasonable Nigerians, knew from the word go that those allegations were not cooked up, and if they were real, the next thing for the CJN to have done was to have stepped aside.<br />
<br />
<br />
“If he had done that, the question of he wouldn’t be the only one, why him, should not have arisen. There is nowhere in the world where judgment is passed on every sinner at once.<br />
<br />
<br />
“It is not every armed robber you can catch the same day. And even some of you know the slow pace of justice may not catch up with them immediately.<br />
<br />
<br />
“But we must continue to see evidence that we are moving towards that sanity and that we are making progressive efforts and sending strong signals to people who think this country must continue as long as they are comfortable and the rest of Nigerians are suffering.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We must send that signal to them that it is not going to be business as usual.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Now, you have seen the head of National Assembly, Senate President, in the dock. Now, you have seen the CJN in the dock. So, one day, we will see a President that also misbehaves in the dock, which now shows that nobody is above the law and that we are all equal before the law.<br />
<br />
<br />
“So, anybody who finds himself in any position should now begin to look closely at his own actions, knowing full well that today may protect him but tomorrow may expose him.”<br />

Life was not all that easy for Mr Eazi in the beginning, as the hip-hop star recently opened up on how he had to leave the comfort his parents provided for him to chart his own path in life.<br />

The musician whose real name is Oluwatosin Ajibade, gave an insight into how he graduated from a school in Ghana at the age of 18 but instead of coming back to Nigeria to get a job decided to start various businesses which failed.<br />

He said, “I would not lie and say that my childhood was tough. People define silver spoon differently but one thing I would say is that my parents always made sure I had everything that I needed.<br />

“I went to good schools, so obviously I was not suffering but in finding my own path, I started to experience struggles.<br />

“I have a Master’s degree in Engineering and Business Management but I decided to become an entrepreneur so I had to suffer by myself.<br />

“If I had stuck to my parents’ plan, I could have finished school and got a proper job. I had job offers but I chose my path.<br />

“I could have toed my father’s path because he is an engineer and working in the aviation sector. I could have been in that sector but I chose my path.<br />

“When you choose your path, you struggle. To be honest, my parents were pressured to compel me to get a proper job.<br />
<br />
“For instance, I graduated from the university in 2011 and I was not even 19 years old at the time.”<br />
<br />
Speaking further on his struggles before hitting the limelight, Eazi, who is known for several hits including ‘Surrender’ where he featured Simi, said that he sold all kinds of items before he finally found his big break.<br />

He said, “After my National Youth Service, I moved back to Ghana but the business failed. The next thing I did was to tell my parents that I had another bright idea and it was to sell sausage rolls. That also failed shortly.<br />

“The businesses I tried my hands on would gradually be successful but at the end it would fail because I had no experience.<br />
<br />
“After that, my parents tried to talk me out of business but I told them that I had another bright idea and it was to be making and selling Sharwama. That also failed.<br />
<br />
“My father later advised me to do my MSc. He felt it would buy me some time to know what I wanted to do.<br />
<br />
“So, I obtained my MSc. at Coventry University, Ghana. I could have concluded my Master’s programme in a year but I had another bright idea. I went into illegal gold mining but I was able to complete school.<br />
<br />
“Obviously, by 2015, the whole family wanted to do an intervention on me except my father. Everyone put my father under pressure so he gave me a timeline, which was April 2016 to get my acts together. “As God would have it, by March 2016 I had kicked off my music career and I was in London having my tour.<br />
<br />
“By the end of 2015, my phone company had kicked off in full scale and I had employed about 20 people. That is how much struggle I passed through to make my money,” he said.

A policeman attached to the Special Protection Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, has reportedly shot one Jubril Mobolaji in the Ajiran, Lekki area of the state over a bad N100 note.<br />

It was learnt that the policeman, one Sergeant Kabiru, who was posted as the orderly to a rich man in the community, had gone to buy a N200 recharge card from a shop operated by one Sherifat.<br />

He was said to have given the woman N500 and collected N300 change – N200 and N100 notes.<br />

Kabiru reportedly complained that the N100 note was “bad” and requested a replacement, which resulted in a verbal exchange between him and Sherifat.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that the woman eventually offered to return the N500 note and withdraw her card.<br />
<br />
In the heat of the altercation, Kabiru reportedly left in anger only to return some minutes later with his rifle.<br />
<br />
He allegedly shot into the ground and inflicted gunshot wound on Mobolaji, who was said to have gone to the shop to buy some items.<br />
<br />
A source, who witnessed the incident, told our correspondent that the matter was reported at the Ilasan Police Station and the trigger-happy policeman was arrested.<br />
<br />
The source said, “On Tuesday, March 19, around 10:00pm, Sergeant Kabiru went to buy recharge card from a woman, who has a shop in Ajiran.<br />
<br />
“He bought N200 recharge card and the woman gave him N300 change. He complained that the N100 note was bad and the woman said she did not have a better one. The woman tried to explain to him that she also collected it from a customer.<br />
<br />
“It resulted in an argument between him and the woman and they abused each other. The man left her shop in anger.<br />
<br />
“Surprisingly, he came back some minutes later armed with a gun and threatened to kill the woman. He fired a shot into the ground and a bullet hit a man (Mobolaji) who wanted to buy something at the shop.<br />
<br />
“Policemen from the Ilasan Division arrested the cop but I don’t know the development on the case.”<br />
<br />
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the sergeant was with the Special Protection Unit and was attached to a VIP in the area.<br />
<br />
He said the victim had been taken to an undisclosed hospital for treatment, urging the police to punish the cop for his actions.<br />
<br />
“I learnt the policeman had been working with the man for a while. He was posted from the SPU.<br />
<br />
“I was about to sleep that night when I heard gunshots. I could not go out because it was already late. It was the following day I was told it was the policeman that fired the shots.<br />
<br />
“The bullet hit Jubril (Mobolaji). I don’t know where he was taken to for treatment, but I learnt he is alive.”<br />
<br />
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Bala Elkana, promised to get back with comments on the incident.<br />
<br />
However, he had yet to do so as of the time of filing in this report.

Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, has alleged that some fraudsters are currently working in some of the banks in the country.<br />
<br />
Magu, who spoke during a meeting with compliance officers of different banks in Port Harcourt on Friday, lamented that the fraudsters were aiding politically exposed and other persons to commit various financial crimes.<br />
<br />
According to him, some politicians use fraudsters working in banks to launder public funds.<br />
<br />
The EFCC boss said apart from helping corrupt politicians to perpetrate financial crimes, they also commit cyber crime.<br />

According to Magu, MoneyGram and Western Union remain a veritable platform used by internet fraudsters to dispossess innocent people of their money.<br />
<br />
He said, “The banks also help the politically exposed persons to steal and launder public funds. You will also agree with me that the banks give lifelines to internet fraudsters; the one we call Yahoo boys.<br />
<br />
“They (banks) provide market for them through MoneyGram and Western Union that are readily available. So, this is the reason we say we must come here. We have to talk. Unfortunately, we have fraudsters working in the banks; working right inside the banks.<br />
<br />
“They throw confidentiality to the wind and subject people’s accounts to a lot of intimidation and extortion. We want to put in our machinery to deal with such fraudulent activities of the bankers and some law enforcement agencies.<br />
<br />
“There are bad eggs among us, even in the EFCC, there seems to be readily available partnership with some fraudulent elements within the bank to perpetrate certain fraudulent activities and money laundering. I think this is basically the reason we called this meeting.<br />
<br />
“Journalists are supposed to be corruption fighters and hunters just like the compliance officers; they are also corruption fighters and we must all work together to make the fight against corruption in Nigeria work.”<br />
<br />
Magu added, “Money is being laundered and money is being used to fund terrorism in the country. There are more terrorist activities in this country. So, it is a good business for them.”<br />
<br />
He said the EFCC secured 194 convictions in the last three months, adding that some of the cases were not filed this year.<br />
<br />
Magu said, “The fight against corruption is not for us; it is for our future generation. Every Nigerian has a duty to fight corruption. God created us to fight corruption. God did not create you to cause evil. We must insist the right thing is done always.”<br />
<br />
He said the commission would go after governors having corruption cases, but were covered by immunity.<br />
<br />
“We will go after them; we will not let anybody go,” Magu said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said yesterday that the resignation of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen has vindicated the action taken against him by President Muhammadu Buhari as well as the party’s earlier call for his resignation.<br />
<br />
Justice Onnoghen’s resignation came a few hours after the National Judicial Council reportedly recommended him to President Buhari for retirement with full benefits.<br />
<br />
The National Publicity Secretary of APC, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, told newsmen in his office that the resignation of the suspended CJN should have been the first step for him to take when it became obvious that he made the mistake of not properly declaring his assets as required by law.<br />
<br />

He said with the CJN standing trial for non-declaration of assets and the previous trial of the Senate President for the same purpose, it is gradually becoming clear to public office holders that there is nobody above the law in the country.<br />
<br />
Onilu said a time is coming when a President who misbehaves will also be docked for wrongdoing, stressing that all those who criticised the President for obeying the ruling of the Code of Conduct Tribunal will now realise that their action was not in the interest of the country.<br />
<br />
Onilu said: “The issue we have in this country is that many people, especially those who have been part of the impunity of the past, are struggling badly to adjust to the reality of rule of law.<br />
<br />
“There is so much struggle to allow the past. It is not good enough for us as a country to allow it go. All of us must rise and face the future; a future of promise and a future of change, so that we can move to the ‘Next Level’.<br />
<br />
“When this happened, the PDP and some of their allies in the civil societies read the barometer of politics, and we do know that until we rise above sentiments, no matter what part of the divide you find yourself, we must realise that this is an issue that has to do with our country. That is the only way we can progress.<br />
<br />
“We knew right from the beginning that the allegations against the former Chief Justice of Nigeria were too serious to be swept under the carpet, and we know that the President does not act on frivolities.<br />
<br />
“He must have done his background checks and must have gotten good information to have taken the action he took, especially when there was basis for the action that can be legally proven.<br />
<br />
“Those lawyers, so-called Senior Advocates of Nigeria, who had over the years dipped their hands along with some of these judicial officers into the till of this country, continued to lampoon the President, lampoon the APC and blame this government that is doing its best to right several of the wrongs that we have been used to.<br />
<br />
“We were actually the one trying to deepen democracy. And this party rose in the defence of the President because we understand what the President was doing and that he meant well, and we know the real purpose that drives his actions.<br />
<br />
“Now, events have proven the President right. Events have proven the party, APC, right. Events have proven those Nigerians who believe Nigeria first and any other things after – events have proven them right.<br />
<br />
“We all can only be hiding behind one finger. Otherwise, we knew Nigerians, reasonable Nigerians, knew from the word go that those allegations were not cooked up, and if they were real, the next thing for the CJN to have done was to have stepped aside.<br />
<br />
“If he had done that, the question of he wouldn’t be the only one, why him, should not have arisen. There is nowhere in the world where judgment is passed on every sinner at once.<br />
<br />
“It is not every armed robber you can catch the same day. And even some of you know the slow pace of justice may not catch up with them immediately.<br />
<br />
“But we must continue to see evidence that we are moving towards that sanity and that we are making progressive efforts and sending strong signals to people who think this country must continue as long as they are comfortable and the rest of Nigerians are suffering.<br />
<br />
“We must send that signal to them that it is not going to be business as usual.<br />
<br />
“Now, you have seen the head of National Assembly, Senate President, in the dock. Now, you have seen the CJN in the dock. So, one day, we will see a President that also misbehaves in the dock, which now shows that nobody is above the law and that we are all equal before the law.<br />
<br />
“So, anybody who finds himself in any position should now begin to look closely at his own actions, knowing full well that today may protect him but tomorrow may expose him.”

The Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia yesterday said it followed all legal and judicial procedures before implementing the death sentence on a Nigerian woman, Kudirat Adesola Afolabi.<br />
<br />
It also clarified that the executed lady was accorded every legal right before the death sentence was carried out on her.<br />
<br />
It said all accused persons subjected to the legal process in Saudi courts of law are allowed access to lawyers to litigate for them.<br />
<br />
The embassy made the clarifications in a statement in Abuja against the backdrop of protest by the Federal Government on the execution of the woman.<br />

The statement said: “With reference to the statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, as published on the cover page of “The Nation” newspaper of 3/4/2019, titled “Fed Govt kicks as Saudi Arabia executes Nigerian,” the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Abuja, clarifies as follows:<br />
<br />
“The embassy affirms that all legal and judicial procedures were followed regarding the accused person and she was accorded every legal right before the death sentence was carried out on her.<br />
<br />
“All accused persons subjected to the legal process in Saudi courts of law are allowed access to lawyers to litigate on their behalf, and the kingdom avails itself the responsibility to provide lawyers for any persons that have no financial ability to do so.<br />
<br />
“All convicted persons on whom the death penalty has been carried out in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have gone through trials characterized by the legal guarantee of justice to their cases because the kingdom’s judicial system is established on objectivity and is dependent, in terms of its rules and regulations, on the Islamic Law, which has always restored rights to their owners and done justice to the victims. This is what the kingdom has always affirmed.”<br />

The embassy insisted that its judicial system was always painstaking.<br />
<br />
It also said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was always in consultation with foreign embassies and consulates in the kingdom, of which are the Nigerian Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate-General in Jeddah<br />
<br />
The statement added: “The death sentence is only carried out in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after all proofs and legal evidence have been exhausted regarding the accused, and the process goes through various legal stages until the allegations against the detained persons have been proven beyond reasonable doubt.<br />
<br />
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is always in consultation with foreign embassies and consulates in the kingdom, of which are the Nigerian Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate General in Jeddah, and it provides them with all facilitations and information and allows their staff to visit their nationals that are detained vis-à-vis a variety of charges as are related to the different stages of their detention and prosecution, and this is allowed every time of their request through normal channels.<br />
<br />
“It is well-known for all those interested in travelling to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that the penalty for drug trafficking is the death sentence and the said sentence is applied on all persons convicted without any exceptions, as long as the evidence is established against them, and this is conveyed to every person prior to his trip to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.<br />
<br />
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia does not neglect the enforcement of penalties in terms of matters of drug trafficking and is determined to apply the law on any person against whom evidence is established in order to combat drug trafficking and protect its citizens from this dangerous menace.”
