Security operatives on Saturday mounted heavy presence at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) National Collation centre for the Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency Supplementary election in Lagos State.<br />
<br />

Security personnel, were strategically positioned at the entrance and within the premises of the centre, located at Local Authority Primary School, Baale St., Ajegunle.<br />
<br />
<br />
Several patrol vehicles were also stationed at the access roads leading to the centre.<br />
<br />
<br />
Only accredited people including the media, observer groups, INEC officers on duty as well as vehicles with access stickers were allowed access into the centre.<br />

Some of the security agencies at centre include the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps, Fire Service, Department of State Security and Police Bomb Squad.<br />

Our correspondents who monitored the centre observed that INEC officials and ad-hoc staff were seen bringing results from the polling units to the centre under close watch of security operatives.<br />
<br />
<br />
INEC in Lagos State is conducting supplementary election in 71 polling units across eight wards of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency for the House of Representatives seat.<br />
<br />
<br />
The commission had declared the Feb. 23 House of Representatives election in the constituency inconclusive due to over-voting, non-complaince with the usage of smart card readers and violence.<br />
<br />
<br />
According to the commission, the affected areas are: Ward 02, Awodi Ora with three polling units; Ward 03, Wilmer with six polling units; Ward 04, Olodi with one polling unit and Ward 05, Tolu with 27 polling units.<br />
<br />
<br />
Others are: Ward 07, Ojo Road with two polling units; Ward 09, Alaba-Oro with two polling units, Ward 10, Mosafejo with 18 polling units and Ward 11, Temidire 2 with 12 polling units.

Contrary to the news making the round that comic actor, Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as Baba Suwe has passed on, the actor in a video has assured his fans that he is presently abroad and receiving treatment.<br />

Looking healthier, the actor said: “My fans both young and old, in Nigeria, I am in America in Rhoda Island. That is where I am receiving treatment. I am being  taken care of and nothing is wrong with me.<br />

A coalition of Ondo state All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth and Women in politics have expressed concern over alleged act of indiscipline within the party in the state.<br />

The coalition had petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari and the National leader of APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on their findings about the affairs of the party in the state.<br />

<br />
The petition was signed by the coalition’s chairman, Ogunleye Odunayo and secretary, Mrs Yakubu Oluremi who strongly believed that the National leadership of the party must be aware of how Ondo APC leaders allegedly mobilized attack and used state ,local government machinery and the party’s resources to support their political allies who contested under the platform of Action Alliance (AA).<br />

According to the petition “It will interest you to know that agents of Ondo State Government masterminded the petition against the emergence of the only APC Senate elect in Ondo State at the election tribunal for the state.<br />

“A petition had been filed before the tribunal for the Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN) against the Independent National Electoral Commission and Senator Ajayi Boroffice, the only APC senator elect from Ondo State by the agents of the state government and the ruling party under Mr Ade Adetimehin<br />

<br />
“It was a rude shock for us to hear that one of the lawyers used by them is the biological son of the AA candidate, Tunji Abayomi, who was sponsored by the state government”.<br />
<br />
<br />
The coalition therefore appealed to President Buhari and Asiwaju Tinubu to use their good offices and to dissolve the present state executives of Ondo State APC,stressing that over 85 percent of party members had been sidelined from the party for working against AA candidates.<br />
<br />
<br />
The APC leaders according to the Coalition openly campaigned for AA candidates and directed members not to vote for APC candidates.<br />
<br />
<br />
It noted that the sample of AA ballot papers were freely distributed to APC members to educate them on how to vote for AA candidates which eventually led to the failure of President Buhari in Ondo State.<br />

The statement further alleged that in the eve of the Presidential and National Assembly elections, the APC mobilization funds given to the party was released to AA party leaders and candidates on the order from above.<br />

It said “We from 48 APC youth and women groups met in Akure, the state capital to protest the anti-party activities of the APC leaders in Ondo state and jointly agreed to write you about the danger in keeping the present party executives in the state under Adetimehin.

A tenant at a residence on Ayantuga Street, Mushin, Lagos State, Kolawole Lawal, has run into trouble after he allegedly rented out an apartment within the house without the landlady’s consent.<br />

It was learnt that the two-room apartment had been vacant until sometime in November 2018 when Lawal let it out to Bakare Abiodun for N280,000, including a N100,000 commission.<br />
<br />
<br />
It was gathered that the landlady, Mrs Deborah Atanda, who does not live in the building, had gone on a visit to the residence when she discovered that the apartment had been occupied.<br />
<br />
<br />
Our correspondent learnt that when Atanda, an octogenarian, approached Lawal, he owned up to have collected the rent and promised to remit it into her account.<br />

He, however, reneged on his promise, prompting Atanda to report a fraud case against him at the Olosan Police Station.<br />

The complainant, who resides with her relations in Agbado, Ogun State, told the police that she had been living on the rent since her son died about three years ago.<br />

<br />
She said, “Lawal has been living in my house for years. There was a vacant room-and-parlour apartment. Surprisingly, Lawal rented it out to one Bakare Abiodun without my due consent. He collected N280,0000 as rent since November 2018 and he did not pay the money into my account.<br />
<br />
<br />
“I got to know that Lawal rented out the apartment when I visited the house on April 6, 2019. The man that rented the apartment said Lawal gave him a handwritten note showing that he (Lawal) collected the rent. I depend on the rent I collect from my tenants.”<br />
<br />
<br />
Lawal, 43, admitted to have collected the rent in his statement to the police but said the landlady authorised him to do so.<br />
<br />
<br />
The native of Ogun State explained that he used the money to repair his car and settled the hospital bill of his wife who was delivered of a baby through a caesarian section.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
He said, “I have been living in the house for seven years now. Mrs Atanda is my landlord’s mother. When my landlord died in 2016, she took over as the landlady. Over time, the relationship between mama (Atanda) and I became that of a son and mother.  I always helped her to rent out rooms and would give her money.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Last year, mama called me and said my neighbour, Baba Femi, wanted to move out of the room-and-parlour apartment and that I should help her find another tenant. She said the room needed some renovation and she gave me N11,500. I eventually spent N18,000 on the renovation. Mama told me to rent it out for N10,000 per month and that he would collect two years’ rent.<br />

“I informed her that somebody wanted to pay N180,000 for one and a half years and she asked me to collect the money. I collected N100,000 as a commission. Unfortunately, it was that time that my car was involved in an accident. I used the money to repair it and told mama that the tenant had not shown up. My wife also gave birth during that time through CS. I spent all the money I had on it.”<br />

A police prosecutor, Inspector, Koti Aondohemba, on Tuesday brought Lawal before an Ogba magistrates’ court on two counts bordering on fraud.<br />

<br />
The charge read, “That you, Kolawole Lawal, on November 9, 2018, on Ayantuga Street, Mushin, in the Lagos State Magisterial District, did fraudulently obtain the sum of N280,000 from one Bakare Abiodun, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 323(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.<br />

“That you, Kolawole Lawal, did dishonestly convert to your own use, the sum of N280,000, property of one Deborah Atanda, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”<br />
<br />
<br />
The defendant pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.<br />

The presiding magistrate, Mrs M. O. Tanimola, granted him bail in the sum of N80,000 with one reliable surety in the like sum and adjourned the matter till May 13, 2019.<br />

Four persons are feared dead in Iriebe Community in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State after gunmen attacked them, and created panic and fear among residents.<br />

The attack happened after a clash between the Hausa community and the Akwa/ Ibom people living in the area.<br />
<br />

The youth President of Iriebe community, David Eleto, who condemned the killing called on the relevant authorities to intervene urgently to prevent a total breakdown of law and order in the area.<br />
<br />
<br />
He, however, said that the heavy presence of police personnel in the area helped quell the crisis, adding that two unidentified gunmen were killed in a gunfight with the police in the area. He said that the police stormed the community after they were contacted that some gunmen had invaded the town and were attacking some residents with machetes. In a related development, gunmen killed the driver of a Coaster bus carrying passengers along the Emohua axis of the East West Road for refusing to open the doors when stopped.<br />

After shooting the driver, the gunmen seized the 30 passengers on the bus and forced them into the bush. Another source in the area said, the driver of the Coastal bus was shot dead after he denied the kidnappers access into the vehicle, as he allegedly pressed the lock of the bus.<br />

The Coaster bus was said to have left Port Harcourt and was heading to Abua Odual Local Council when the gunmen attacked it.<br />

The gunmen also abducted a senior employee of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) after shooting a police escort/ driver identified as Corporal Peter Osagie. Towards finding lasting solution to gridlock in Apapa, the Senate Committee on Works on Friday advocated co-operation of various government agencies to make port operations easier.<br />

The committee during an emergency meeting with stakeholders in Lagos as part of its oversight functions condemned extortion of truck drivers and asked law enforcement and traffic regulatory agencies to investigate and punish erring officers.<br />
<br />
<br />
It called for a multi sector approach between the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Nigeria Customs Service  (NCS), and Nigerian Maritime Admistration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to give waivers to encourage use of other Eastern ports to decongest Apapa.<br />
<br />
<br />
The committee appealed to truck driver unions to come together and increase areas where they could park their trucks while calling on NPA to speed up processes aimed at restoring order.<br />
<br />
<br />
The committee summoned the Managing Director of the APM Terminal to appear before the National Assembly on Wednesday to resolve various concerns raised by stakeholders against the firm perceived to be part of the problem.<br />
<br />
<br />
The committee directed that the Apapa Truck Park under construction be completed and handed over to NPA for use latest May 2 or May 3 which is Thursday or Friday next week.<br />
<br />
<br />
Sen. Kabiru Gaya, Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, who led the delegation, said that in spite of various government interventions, “it is a shame to all of us in Nigeria that this gridlock should continue.”<br />
<br />
<br />
The other lawmakers in the team which included Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa, Sen. Clifford Ordia and Sen. Barnabas Gemade, took turns to interact with various stakeholders on proffering final solutions to the Apapa gridlock.<br />
<br />
<br />
After extensive deliberations, Gaya ruled that all forms of corruption causing the problems be nipped in the bud as the Buhari administration had zero tolerance for corrupt practices.<br />
<br />
<br />
“We’ll set up a small committee within the next four days consisting of security agencies, customs, clearing agents and so on to give us a report within three days so that we can use that report and also implement that report.<br />
<br />
<br />
“Because I know that the President, Vice President and everybody is concerned about how best we can get out of this national embarrassment,” he said.<br />
<br />
<br />
He added that the Federal government was constructing and maintaining roads and addressing the problems of overstretched infrastructure and called for the support of the Lagos State Government in patching pot holes.<br />

“The Federal Government is trying to get more temporary parking spaces for trailers (articulated vehicles), therefore, the Tincan trailer park is being completed and we have ordered them to commission that park within the next one week,” he said.<br />

He stressed the need for LASTMA to join hands with other members of the taskforce to restore order in Apapa.<br />
<br />
<br />
The committee chairman assured that within two weeks the committee was going to take action if its orders were not enforced to restore sanity in Apapa.<br />

Earlier, Mr Funsho Adebiyi, Director, Highways, South West, lamented indiscriminate parking of trucks on the bridges in Lagos which he said were not designed for static loads.<br />
<br />
<br />
Adebiyi said that the bridges were endangered while lamenting other forms of abuses of bridges which included building under them and other activities that had caused fire that damaged some bridges.<br />
<br />
<br />
He said that there was need for attitudinal change among Nigerians toward protection of the nation’s road infrastructure.<br />
<br />
<br />
Stakeholders at the event included the Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Roads Safety Corps, Mr Hyginus Omeje, General Manager, LASTMA, Mr Wale Musa, the NPA General Manager, Security, Capt. Iheanacho Ebubeogu, truck drivers unions, truck owners unions, shipping companies and terminal operators.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday presented awards to 168 ex-corps members at the combined 2015/2016/2017 President’s NYSC Honours Award held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.<br />

Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, also announced automatic employment to the awardees in the Federal Civil Service and scholarships up to Doctorate level in any Nigerian universities.<br />

<br />
The President’s NYSC Honours Award was instituted in 1974 to encourage corps members to contribute to the overall national development by embarking on community development projects.<br />

Buhari said that it was the exceptional individuals in society who were the true builders of institutions and nations.<br />
<br />
According to him, the vision, innovation and hard work of one person is sufficient to make a difference in the life of a community or a nation.<br />
<br />
The president said that enduring individual success was a function of courage and resilience, adding that he was challenged by the remarkable courage of the Corp members who suffered various accidents while in service.<br />
<br />
“The fact that they have gone through these harrowing personal injuries and are still determined to engage the future with hope and confidence is proof that they will still experience the joys of great success and fulfillment.<br />
<br />
“To all of today’s honorees, let me make it clear that you are not just the future of this country, but also its present.<br />
“You must all see yourselves as the leaders that you are; but leadership comes with responsibilities and continuous sacrifice.<br />

On his part, the outgoing Director-General of NYSC Maj.-Gen Suleman Kazaure, said the award aimed at encouraging high ideals and patriotism through selfless and dedicated service to fatherland.<br />

Kazaure said the award was recognition of teamwork, honesty, loyalty, devotion to duty and creativity.<br />
<br />
“Though the young men and women being honoured today were the most outstanding in performance, I am proud to report that corps members deployed in 2015, 2016 and 2017 service years generally contributed immensely to the socio-economic development of our dear country.<br />
<br />
“Their performances in key sectors such as education, health, agriculture and infrastructure were applauded by all Nigerians.<br />
<br />
“In the areas of Community Development Service, successive batches of corps members have been adding value to communities throughout the federation with various projects.<br />
<br />
“These include construction and renovation of schools and hospitals as well as provision of potable water,” he said.<br />
<br />
One of the awardees, Nelson Nnamdi, in an interview, said he felt great and was giving God the glory.<br />
<br />
He said he learnt the act of service to humanity and to the nation during his service year.<br />

“When I was serving, I did the Virtually Impaired Electronic Working Guide; it is for the blind.<br />
<br />
“When I executed the project in the school of the blind in Izzi, Ebonyi State, the project went far; in fact the joy in the heart of those young blind students gives me joy.<br />

In view of the rerun election for Ajeromi/Ifelodun Federal constituency scheduled to take place on Saturday, the Lagos State Police Command has placed restrictions on vehicular movements and mass movement of persons from 6am to 3pm in the area.<br />

Armed hoodlums terrorising Ahoada Ndele-Rumuji-Emohua axis of the East-West Road have kidnapped two oil worker in Rivers State, killing two members of their security.<br />

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday evening.<br />

The victims, who were said to be senior staff members of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), are said to be returning from an official trip from neighbouring Bayelsa State when the dare-devil hoodlums struck, killing their police security aide and an escort driver attached to the convoy before whisking them away to unknown destination.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that the Shell convoy was attacked between Rumuji and Evekwu community on Thursday evening while they were returning from Bayelsa State.<br />

A source in Shell, who preferred anonymity, confirmed that the senior staff members were returning from Bayelsa State at about 4pm with his escort when they were attacked.<br />
<br />
In the same vein, a Coaster bus was equally attacked and the driver killed by unknown gunmen along the East/West Road, particularly at the axis of the road fondly referred to as ‘Sambisa Forest’.<br />
<br />
The driver of the said bus identified as Jonah Sokolo was allegedly shot dead same Thursday and two of his passengers kidnapped.<br />
<br />
A man who claimed to have witnessed the attack told newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday that the driver of the Coaster bus was shot dead after he used the central lock of the vehicle to deny the kidnappers access into the bus.<br />
<br />
The attacks occurred a day after four personnel of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on official duty to enumerate flooded farmlands in the LGA were abducted.<br />
<br />
A fifth NEMA official escaped abduction with bullet injury.<br />
<br />
The spokesman of the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the killings and abductions.<br />
<br />
He said that investigations were already on, adding that the criminals would be fished out soon.<br />
<br />
In a related development, a vigilance group in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA of the state, ONELGA Security and Peace Advisory Committee (OSPAC), allegedly killed over five cultists in Ubimini community, Emohua LGA of the state.<br />
<br />
A source close to the Emohua community alleged that apart from the five dead suspected cultists, three other members of the group sustained bullet wounds in the attack.<br />
<br />
OSPAC reportedly visited the community, allegedly under the cultists’ siege, following an invitation by a man conducting a burial.<br />
<br />
On sighting the members of OSPAC at the burial venue, the cultists reportedly opened fire on their perceived rival group, resulting in a gun duel that culminated in the killing of the five suspected cultists.<br />
<br />
However, the police in the state could not confirm the cultist fights.<br />
<br />
Omoni said: “I do not know anything about that. I have not been briefed on it.”

Nine Nigerians have been arrested in the United States of America for defrauding businesses and individuals of more than $3.5 million.<br />

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Geoffrey S. Berman, and Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) Special Agent-in-Charge of the Tampa, Florida, Field Office of U.S., James C. Spero, announced on Thursday that the suspects committed the fraud through business email compromises, a Russian oil scam, and a romance scam.<br />

Named among the suspects are Oluwaseun Adelekan a.k.a. Sean Adelekan, Olalekan Daramola, Solomon Aburekhanlen, Gbenga Oyeneyin,Abiola Olajumoke, Temitope Omotayo, Bryan Eadie, Albert Lucas and Ademola Adebogun.<br />

It is common knowledge that former Big Brother Naija housemate, Bamike Olawumi, also known as Bam Bam met her boyfriend, Teddy A at the contest last year. There were a lot of speculations about the future of their relationship after they came out of the house.<br />

Recently, the organisers of the show decided to have a reunion for the old housemates. The event was filled with a lot of drama like a lie detector test. In the test, Teddy A was asked about the certainty of the future of his relationship with Bam Bam. The result came out positive on both ends, which generated a lot of buzz on social media.<br />

In a chat with <i>Punch Newspaper</i>, Olawunmi noted that she already had peace about her relationship with Teddy A before the reunion show. However, the lie detector test further influenced the level of peace she had about their love affair.<br />

“Honestly, there is no relationship without its ups and downs or doubts; but that was a lie detector test; you can never know what is in the heart of anybody.<br />
<br />
“I trust him with my life; I would give my left kidney or any other double organ I have to him. But you still have your shaky phase whether you like it or not.<br />

“I wasn’t sure of what the lie detector test was going to say irrespective of how our relationship has been. When the answer came as positive, it influenced the peace I already have; it gave me more peace.<br />

“I would advise the new big brother housemates not to try to imitate any of the old housemates. They should be themselves.<br />
<br />
“I enjoyed myself in the house until people started stressing me about being fake. Even though I never knew where my relationship with Teddy A was going; I knew that I liked him and being with him gave me peace.<br />
<br />
“I am someone who lives in the moment. I was consistent from the beginning to the end of the show,” she said.<br />
<br />
Olawunmi who is known for being stylish and elegant, was recently gifted with a car by her fans to celebrate her 30th birthday. The news about the car gift went viral and she received a backlash from some celebrities speculating that the presentation of the birthday gift was staged.<br />
<br />
“I was blown away when my fans presented a car to me on my birthday. I have always loved that brand of car because it is easy to maintain.<br />
<br />
“I feel honoured that they put their monies together to get that for me. Contrary to rumours making the rounds that they were about 300 of them who contributed money, the fans who bought me that car were not even up to 10. It was just a few of them who have money that decided to sacrifice their cash to buy me the car.<br />
<br />
“People will always talk; they are entitled to their opinions. I don’t get offended by opinions and speculations because they don’t know me personally.<br />
<br />
“Propaganda sells, so when it sounds like a lie and exaggerated, they tend to believe it as the truth.<br />
<br />
“I am usually fascinated and entertained by all these drama and speculations than being offended,” she said.<br />

She further spoke about the reason behind her calm nature and why she was a symbol of peace at the Big Brother reunion.<br />

“I have always been a peacemaker because the Bible says we should follow peace with all men.<br />

As Clinton Kalu, a native of Ndinwafor in Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, walked out from the Port Harcourt Maximum Prison, his smile and openness betrayed the pain he had been through these past 27 years.<br />
<br />
Right within that facility, he had waited for the hangman’s noose for almost three decades for a crime he knew nothing about. The 56-year-old consultant criminologist was roped into a murder case in April 1992 by some undisclosed persons while trying to resolve a dispute involving his in-laws. That marked the beginning of his journey in ‘hell’.<br />
<br />
His trial at the tribunal and later at a High Court and his eventual detention happened so fast that when he found himself in prison over an offence he did not commit, he was livid with anger but later accepted his fate. As time passed by, the then 29-year-old man, who was full of life, fought hard to prove to the court that he was framed up by those, who felt threatened by his rise in life.<br />

Recalling how he was sentenced to death by hanging or firing squad, Kalu said, “Twenty-seven years ago, some people were accused of stealing generating plant and fluorescent tubes.<br />
<br />
“They are my in-laws. After the court decided the case, we heard that somebody was murdered in the compound where my sister married. But I was arrested because the thought by those behind my ordeal was that I was trying to resolve a land dispute in favour of one person.<br />
<br />
“I was taken to Okigwe Police Station; from there I was taken to Owerri in Imo State and from there we were charged to court in April 1992.<br />
<br />
“I was detained in Owerri Prison. I was at the tribunal for seven years because those behind my ordeal added armed robbery to the case. They believed I was a strong man and wanted to destroy me.<br />
<br />
“They brought false witnesses to testify against me at the tribunal. I was later taken to a regular court where I was condemned to death.<br />
<br />
“So, from Owerri, I was transferred to Port Harcourt prison. At the Port Harcourt prisons, I waited for many years for the hangman’s noose.<br />
<br />
“Nevertheless, I went to the Appeal Court to appeal the case but my lawyer messed up the case. Then I decided to proceed to the Supreme Court, where after 27 years in prison, I got victory.<br />
<br />
“I was imprisoned for 27 years for committing no offence. On April 5 this year, I was discharged and acquitted.”<br />
<br />
He cautioned that with the Supreme Court declaring him innocent, it would be wrong for anybody to tag him an ex-convict.<br />
<br />
“If you describe me as an ex-convict, I won’t be happy with you. After 27 years, they found out that I committed no crime. Do you know that they would have killed me and after many years, they would have found out that I did not commit the crime?<br />
<br />
“Something like that happened somewhere in Europe. In my own case, the Supreme Court found out that I was innocent and freed me.<br />
<br />
“Any person that refers to me as an ex-convict, I will look at the person as a fool. I will just ask God to forgive him,” he said.<br />
<br />
While in incarceration, Kalu lost his mother; and coupled with the fact that he was not married and had no immediate family (children), he struggled to fight loneliness even though his relatives, who also believed he was incapable of hurting anybody, let alone killing a person, visited him in prison from time to time.<br />
<br />
On whether he would avenge the injustice done to him, Kalu explained that he had been a changed man after gaining knowledge about the ways of Christ, adding that vengeance was not in his thoughts. He pointed out that though he felt insulted and humiliated by the court verdict, which sentenced him to death, he later realised while in prison that his tribulation was to serve a purpose.<br />
<br />
“God has dealt with those behind my ordeal the way he wants to deal with them; I don’t have any business with them.<br />
<br />
“God has already dealt with the man, who stood as a complainant in my case.<br />
<br />
“On whether I will seek compensation from the police for falsely accusing me, I don’t know about that for now.<br />
<br />
“I have imbibed Christ and I have nothing against those behind my ordeal. While I was in the prison, I read more. I had Diploma in Theology, I had Bachelor’s Degree in Guidance and Counselling, Master’s in Education Management, Master’s in Guidance and Counselling and I also got PhD in Guidance and Counselling.<br />
<br />
“I am a child of God and have nothing against them. The police and others behind my ordeal knew that I did not commit the crime.<br />
<br />
“One Sergeant Eze and one other person were aware that I did not commit the crime; it was a gang-up and conspiracy at the highest level.<br />
<br />
“First of all, when I was taken to prison, I was not happy; I felt insulted and humiliated. I began to write petitions, but petitions cannot get you anywhere if you don’t have any person to follow it up,” he stated.<br />
<br />
On what the future holds for him, Kalu, who said he was diabetic and fed himself throughout the 27 years he stayed in prison, stated that he could take to politics or continue with his guidance and counselling job, which he was doing while behind bars. To cater for himself due to his failing health, the 56-year-old said he had to sell some of his personal belongings, adding that when funds were no longer there, the church took over his feeding.<br />
<br />
He pointed out that his experience in prison had taught him that anybody could find themselves in jail due to circumstances beyond their control. According to him, life in a Nigerian prison will not reform most inmates because of the hardship inside there.<br />
<br />
On what his being in prison for almost three decades had denied him, Kalu lamented that he may not be able to know the whereabouts of most of his properties and maintained that he would have built more houses and acquired more properties if he were not in prison.<br />
<br />
“I would have built more houses; I would have bought more land and currently, I don’t know the position of my properties,” he said.<br />
<br />
He, however, noted that he was not thinking about marriage immediately, adding that the first thing was for him to get established.<br />
<br />
Dissatisfied with the poor living condition in Nigerian prisons, the Okigwe-born man disclosed that a lot of inmates were restive in prison, adding that the facilities there were not encouraging.<br />
<br />
“In the prison, a lot of the youths are restive and they want to make it by any other way, even when they lack academic exposure.<br />
<br />
“I went into an academic venture that will benefit the inmates and even the wardens; something like seminars.<br />
<br />
“Government should provide enough facilities in prisons to help reform the inmates. Anybody can be in the prison, unless your enemies do not remember you. The moment they remember you, there is nothing you can do. The entire place is tough.<br />
<br />
“Most people who are inside there come out without being reformed. You can imagine 200 people sleeping in a room. There, each man is planning to outwit the other. Once an inmate dies, the next man around will carry the dead person’s food and eat.<br />
<br />
“I was diabetic and fed myself for those 27 years. Many people are not privileged to do that.<br />
<br />
“I had to sell some of my land, cars and other properties to be able to do that (feed myself in prison). At a point, when I had no money, the church took over my feeding,” he stated.<br />
<br />
He said he was filled with joy when on April 5, 2019, the Supreme Court pronounced him not guilty of the charge against him, insisting that the judgement had vindicated him.<br />
<br />
“I was overwhelmed with joy on the day I was released from prison having spent 27 years there without committing a crime. Up till this moment, I feel like a newly born baby. God gave me another chance to experience His greatness again,” he said.<br />
<br />
“I was happy doing that for free; nobody paid me for it. The church helped me to sponsor seminars that were organised in the prison. I read law before I went to the prison,” he said.<br />
<br />
Describing the 56-year-old as a kind-hearted man, Felix Nwankwo, his cousin, said he was in secondary school when Kalu was jailed for committing no crime.<br />
<br />
“I was in secondary school when he was taken to prison but I already knew him then because he was so dear to many of us.<br />
<br />
“Whenever he came back from Enugu, all of us would be happy. You would always see children clustering around him.<br />
<br />
“I never stopped going to visit him while he was in prison. He once told me that he believed that the hand of God was in his struggle.<br />
<br />
“The best he has achieved in life is for him to have known God. He has been called from death to life. We are happy that he has come back. He is a blessed person,” he said.

Unfazed by City’s crucial win at Manchester United on Wednesday, Liverpool are keeping their end of the bargain in their chase for a first English title in 29 years.<br />

Liverpool required just seconds to demonstrate that the chances of an upset from already relegated Huddersfield were non-existent.<br />
<br />
Their goal-spree also ate into the eight-goal deficit by which they trailed City in the goal difference column before kick-off.<br />
<br />
Keita started the rout with the first of those goals, Liverpool’s quickest of the Premier League era, an effort which showcased so much of their high-pressing energy and effort.<br />

Goalkeeper Jonas Lossl played a pass out of the Huddersfield area to Jon Goren Stankovic, who was immediately closed down by Keita and robbed of the ball.<br />

Brazil’s prisons are massively overcrowded, housing nearly 300,000 more inmates than they have room for, according to a survey published on Friday.<br />
<br />
The survey was conducted by the media group Globo, the non-governmental organisation Brazilian Forum of Public Security and the University of Sao Paulo.<br />
<br />
The country’s penitentiaries have 708,546 inmates, while they should accommodate no more than 415,960, according to the survey.<br />
<br />
More than 35 per cent of the inmates have not yet been sentenced.<br />
<br />

With one study indicating that 37 per cent of people in pre-trial custody are not jailed after their trials.<br />
<br />
“We can estimate that there are at least 93,000 people unfairly imprisoned in Brazil today,” the Globo website G1 quoted Thandara Santos and David Marques from the Brazilian Forum of Public Security as saying.<br />
<br />
Many prisons in Brazil are also controlled by criminal gangs, who use them as basis to organise criminal activity outside.<br />
<br />
“Prisons have never – anywhere in the world – been shown to be effective in reducing crime or violence,” said Camila Dias and Rosangela Goncalves from the University of Sao Paulo.<br />
<br />
“On the contrary, especially in Brazil over the past three decades, they have shown they have a fundamental role as spaces where crime … is organised, among other things, through a very efficient system of recruiting new members for criminal networks,” they added.<br />
<br />
President Jair Bolsonaro, who took power on Jan.1, has announced a crackdown on the country’s powerful crime syndicates.<br />
<br />
Brazil has the third-highest number of incarcerated people in the world, behind the U.S. and China, according to the online database, World Prison Brief.<br />

U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected a UN arms trade treaty that was approved by his predecessor Barack Obama and is currently waiting in the Senate for ratification.<br />
<br />
“The UN will soon receive a formal notice that America is rejecting this treaty,” Trump said on Friday, addressing the National Rifle Association (NRA), a pro-gun group, denouncing the “badly misguided” agreement.<br />
<br />
On stage in Indianapolis, Trump then signed a formal message to the Senate asking lawmakers to “discontinue the treaty ratification process.<br />

“And to return the now rejected treaty right back to me in the Oval Office, where I will dispose of it,” he said to applause.<br />
<br />
Trump signed the letter and then threw the pen to the crowd, which was chanting “U-S-A.”<br />
<br />
“We are reaffirming that American liberty is sacred and that American citizens live by American laws, not the laws of foreign countries,” said Trump.<br />
<br />
In the final weeks of his presidency, Obama had sent the treaty to the Senate, which must approve international treaties under the U.S. Constitution.<br />
<br />
The Arms Trade Treaty regulates the international trade in conventional arms. According to the UN, 101 states joined the ATT. It entered into force in 2014.<br />
<br />
Obama pledged it would not infringe on the U.S. constitutional right to gun ownership.<br />
<br />
Trump also used his speech to hail U.S. states that have allowed trained teachers to carry guns in the classroom “to protect themselves and their students who they love.”<br />

Indications emerged on Wednesday that the incumbent governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello might dump his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).<br />

According to insider sources, the governor is likely to join the Accord party for the party’s ticket to contest the November governorship election in the state.<br />

Feelers to this emerged when the governor ordered the removal of APC flags and banners from Lugard House, seat of the state government.<br />
<br />
<br />
The governor has been having a tough battle with APC chieftains in the state to secure the party’s ticket for the election.<br />

According to a report, the Accord Party secretariat has been renovated by the governor. Although the Accord Party was his alternative party in 2015 when he lost the APC governorship primary to late Prince Abubakar Audu, he was eventually nominated to take the place of Audu in the supplementary election.<br />

Sources disclosed that Bello told some of his closest allies in his cabinet that some cabal in Aso Rock advised him to move to another party since forces were against him for the ticket.<br />
<br />
<br />
According to him, he has been assured of their support if he contests the governorship election in another party.<br />
<br />
<br />
The sources also disclosed that the governor of Benue state, Dr. Samuel Ortom, a good friend of Bello, also advised him to dump the APC for another party so that he could contest in the election.<br />
<br />
<br />
Already, the national secretariat of the APC received over 10 petitions submitted by individuals, various groups and also within the party demanding that Bello should not be given ticket for second term.<br />

<br />
Senior officials of the party at the national secretariat in Abuja that preferred anonymity, however, said while it was normal for discontent to exist in the polity, it was doubtful if Governor Bello would contemplate jumping ship.<br />

“What the national leadership is determined to do is to level the playing field for all aspirants to play. The question of anyone being favoured by Abuja is totally misconceived,” an official said.<br />

Operatives from the Ibadan zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday, arrested no fewer than 32 suspected internet fraudsters (aka ‘Yahoo-Yahoo Boys).<br />

<br />
During the operation, six exotic cars, laptops, mobile phones, several documents containing false pretenses and fetish objects were recovered from the suspects.<br />
<br />
<br />
Aged between 15 and 39 years, the suspects were arrested at Liberty Estate, Laderin area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital during an early morning sting operation carried out by men of the commission.<br />
<br />
<br />
Due to the timing, the suspects were taken by surprise when the EFCC operatives swept on them at one of their notorious havens in the ancient city.<br />

Fourteen of the suspects claimed to be undergraduates while 18 others said they are self-employed in various vocations.<br />
<br />
<br />
The arrest was sequel to a petition detailing their alleged fraudulent activities, including internet fraud through which they obtain money from unsuspecting victims.<br />

According to the commission’s spokesperson, Tony Orilade, the suspects are already helping operatives with useful information adding that “they will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

The Director-General, Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi, has said that only synergy and collaboration by security agencies could address the challenges of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism confronting the nation.<br />

Bichi pointed out that inter-agency synergy was necessary to combat the contemporary threats facing the country, stressing that this was the new paradigm of law enforcement and security management across the world.<br />
<br />
<br />
Addressing a meeting of the Forum of Spokespersons of Security and Response Agencies at the DSS headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, the DG said each agency must bring its wealth of experience and comparative advantage to complement the effort of the others.<br />
<br />
<br />
He added, “The dynamics of contemporary threats such as kidnapping, terrorism, cattle rustling, cybercrime and other forms of organized criminal activities such as human, drug and currency trafficking which are confronting Nigeria required joint efforts to combat them.<br />

“Inter-agency synergy has, no doubt, become the new paradigm of law enforcement and security management in today’s world.”<br />
<br />
<br />
The DSS boss admonished the spokespersons to develop ideas and initiatives that can build trust and promote public confidence in security agencies.<br />

<br />
“In order to successfully achieve this, you must understand and respect the delicate balance between protecting the state and citizens. Remain steadfast, committed and loyal to the course,” Bichi counseled.<br />
<br />
<br />
The Chairman, Crisis Communication Centre, Comm. Yusuf Anas (retd.), in his remarks, said the FOSSRA was established to enhance the communication between the security agencies and the public.<br />
<br />
<br />
He explained that the group which comprised spokespersons of all security agencies met from time to time to discuss issues affecting the performance of the concerned organizations.
