Boko Haram frees 3 UNIMAID lecturers, 10 Police wives

As in past freedom deals, the International Committee of the Red Cross, ICRC was involved.<br /> <br /> According to a statement by Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant(media) to the president, the release followed a series of negotiations as directed by President Buhari.<br /> <br /> According to the brief given by the DSS, all the 13 rescued persons are in the custody of the service and are on their way to Abuja with the assistance of the Nigerian Army and the Air Force.<br /> <br /> In expectation of their being brought to the DSS headquarters, a team of doctors and psychologists has been placed on standby. The rescued persons may be presented to the President and thereafter released to their families, if there are no issues of security or medical concerns.<br /> <br /> The President, who got step by step progress reports on the lengthy negotiations while they took place, received the good news with a lot of happiness. He commended all those who in one way or the other helped in making the release possible.<br /> <br /> He then urged the DSS and the Nigerian Army to intensify efforts to bring home the remaining Chibok Girls still in the custody of the terrorists.<br /> <br /> TThe Director-General, Malam Lawal Daura, assured the President that they were working hard to bring home the remaining girls and, as soon as possible, bring the Chibok Girls saga to an end.

Jafaru Isa (retd.).

We are tapping into all these to make Ekiti great.<br /> <br /> “All those that had ruled Ekiti did their best, but I think I can do better because I won’t take whatever that doesn’t belong to me as a benefit in government because I fear God.<br /> <br /> “Let me say this, if all the governors and those occupying leadership positions take what are legitimate due to them alone as benefits, Nigeria will be far better than this and that is exactly what I am going to use my aspiration to teach.”<br /> <br /> On his decision to choose a muslim running mate, Afe added, “Since both Muslims and Christians are Nigerians with legitimate rights, nothing stops me from picking my deputy among the Muslims.<br /> <br /> “The issues affecting Nigerians today knew no religion. It knows no ethnic group, so what we need that we should those who have the fear of God to take charge and Nigeria will be better for it.”

Broadcasters are reminded that they have a duty to respect all extant laws related to the<br /> reportage and coverage of the electoral process. Don’t broadcast campaigns when the period for commencement of campaigns have not commenced.”<br /> <br /> “We are disturbed by the pattern of insensitive and inflammatory broadcasts emanating from some broadcast stations, especially in their coverage of national crises, like the Herdsmen/Farmer crises.<br /> <br /> “Just yesterday, we released the sanctions profile for Nigerian broadcast stations for the 4th quarter of 2017. Many stations have been fined for hateful and inciting broadcast. (The list is already on our website). It is important to remind our presenters and so-called On-Air-Personalities (OAPs), that they must be professionally detached from the stories and reports of crises phenomena.<br /> <br /> They are to offer platforms for Nigerians to present all the sides to issues in the news, not become the subjects of these stories, as they are wont to doing on many programs. This is especially true of political programs on broadcast stations.<br /> <br /> “We have observed that some stations deliberately and repeatedly air very inciting contents long after the events break. We have warned stations that they must follow the tenets of the Broadcasting Code. I died and woke up; I literally died and woke up. I say that authoritatively because I know that I had an encounter with people that I know had died during that period. I saw my father who died about 12 years ago; he was the one that came and chased me back to the world because it was not my time. I died here in Nigeria but woke up when they were taking me to the mortuary. That was the first time I had a seizure in my house but my wife stood by me. God would keep on blessing my wife; I believe that God gave me my wife and I always thank him for her. I bless God that she stayed despite everything that happened to me. They were taking me to a mortuary but to God be the glory, my hand moved and that was the point they returned me to the hospital. Here I am today. The encounter made me realise that there is nothing as good as rest. It is very important to sleep. I work so hard and I believe that of all comedians in Nigeria, I am the only one with so many brands, I have Crack Ya Ribs, Laff for Christ’s Sake and Festival of Love.”<br /> <br /> Speaking for the first time since his second visit to the hospital over the tumours in his brain, Agwu told Saturday Beats that he had a relapse because he did not rest properly after his first surgery. “What happened was that they did an MRI scan and they detected that I had two growths. They removed a tumour at the back of my head which was the size of a golf ball and the other tumour was close to my brain. They advised me that if they touched the other tumour, it could be fatal. They gave me drugs to shrink the tumour but I did not rest well and that is why it came back last year. I did not rest at all, after my surgery in America, I resumed doing my shows. I thank God for everything.<br /> <br /> “The truth is that I am back and better. I just want to use this opportunity to tell the people that God is great and this is a time we should all reflect on our life. I would not lie to you, things are not easy in the country and many people are running away from Nigeria. ‘Crack Ya Rib’ was the first Nigerian show that went to London and after that, everybody started taking their shows there. I thank God that ‘Crack Ya Rib’ paved the way for other shows,” said Agwu.<br /> <br /> Being the humour peddler that he is, the funnyman said that some people including his dear friend and colleague, Okey Bakassi, believe that his illness was a spiritual attack simply because he once showed interest to contest as the governor of Rivers State. “We live in a country where people are funny. Remember there was a time I made it public that I wanted to contest as a governor for my state, now, people have advised me not to try it again because they believe that my illness was a spiritual attack. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3DFfRwx3JzS_jGkGu50_OJI9Jl0XnsxV11UqW9xMEHvETGq7Df3kynQYXzkkgD1Yl9apQxHosDGhJyMoYoMwQj5TiMewZavb52zuHcisEmRsEmXP0yPWhgjGET6uBECqaByOVkiq7jl-1/s1600/Attahiru+Jega.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3DFfRwx3JzS_jGkGu50_OJI9Jl0XnsxV11UqW9xMEHvETGq7Df3kynQYXzkkgD1Yl9apQxHosDGhJyMoYoMwQj5TiMewZavb52zuHcisEmRsEmXP0yPWhgjGET6uBECqaByOVkiq7jl-1/s320/Attahiru+Jega.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Prof. Attahiru Jega, on Friday said Nigeria’s democracy was not delivering dividends to the people due to politicians autocracy.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> He attributed the situation to “politicians’ autocracy’’, saying that democracy was not thriving in Nigeria because of the autocratic nature of politicians, “who obviously were connected to military rule.<br /> <br /> Jega made this known while contributing in a panel discussion on “Three Decades of Democratic Transition in Africa’’ organised by the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) in Abuja.<br /> <br /> He said that democracy was in a state of flux in African continent and that there were very serious challenges of whether democracy was delivering dividends to the citizens.<br /> <br /> According to him, Africa’s democracy, instead of providing the dividends to the people, is creating instability and crisis.<br /> <br /> The former INEC chairman said “the challenges most African countries are faced with is that democratisation in most of the countries are on account of legacies of military rule.<br /> <br /> “Clearly, everybody knows that military rule is an aberration, and if it has done anything in our continent here in Africa is that it has created very dangerous legacies.<br /> <br /> “In Nigeria, we have been talking about `militicians’; many of the prominent politicians now are people who learnt politics under military rule, particularly under the Babangida politics of transition.<br /> <br /> “Many of them now have a do-or-die mentality of engaging in election and it is a mindset that was imbibed under the military rule.’’<br /> <br /> He said that there was growing frustration that democracy was not delivering what was expected of it whether in terms of legitimacy of regimes, in terms of stability, peaceful coexistence and quality of governance.<br /> <br /> “Most times, the electoral process is just a routine because candidates who do not represent the people are imposed on the people.<br /> <br /> “So, the lack of integrity of the election coming from a military approach is responsible for undermining democracy in Africa.’’<br /> <br /> Jega, however, advised that caution should be taken in proffering solution to the challenges of democracy, saying “yes, democracy may be challenging, but we can address this within the democratic framework.’’<br /> <br /> He added that military rule was not the solution to democratic challenges because it would only aid in exacerbating the issue because no country had successfully developed with a military mindset.<br /> <br /> He said that one of the key tenets of electoral democracy was regularity of elections, adding that though most African countries now conducted elections regularly, the quality of these elections were not sound.<br /> <br /> Jega called on Nigerians to rethink the practice of democracy to enable it to drive development and impact positively on the wellbeing of citizens.<br /> <br /> The Director of CDD, Ms Idayat Hassan, said that Africa was practising a hybrid system of democracy, adding that though Africans practised democracy, it had become authoritarian for selfish reasons.<br /> <br /> She said that the freedom of the press in the last two years across Africa, particularly in South Africa and Nigeria, had not been commendable because many people who spoke against some people were dealt with.<br /> <br /> Hassan said that successive administration in the country had continued to use democracy to their personal advantage.<br /> <br /> She said that the government assumed power through democratic principles but that they had remained autocratic in their conduct.<br /> <br /> Hassan said that real democracy should be inclusive and delivering development to the people and that it was beyond building institutions and economic growth.</div>

The continuous hardship occasioned by inadequate fuel supply must stop before Nigerians lose confidence it has on the government.<br /> <br /> “The management of NNPC under the leadership of Dr. Maikanti Baru has failed. The NNPC chieftain should know that leadership is a privilege to better the lives of others and not an opportunity to satisfy personal interest. Ordinary, in civilized nations, when a leader cannot perform, it’s more glorifying to resign and give way to a more capable person to perform in the interest of the people. We saw that in this country when the late Bola Ige stepped aside as the power minister to pave the way for a better replacement. We expect Baru to do same if he cannot fix the fuel situation in the country.<br /> <br /> “Nigerians cannot continue to buy fuel at over N200 per litre after spending hours on queues at filling stations, sometimes without even getting the products. Many lives have been lost due to the struggle to buy fuel at chaotic places across the country dues to unending scarcity caused by unbridled corruption and mismanagement.<br /> <br /> To address the crisis, the youths asked the NNPC to ensure steady availability of petrol across the country without further delay.<br /> <br /> They asked the President to urgently restructure the NNPC for effective service delivery.</div>

And we are so happy that this partnership is working.”<br /> <br /> On some of the conclusions at the meeting, Lawan said, “We have not concluded because the summit will continue on Monday and that will be the end of this particular summit and then the senate will pass resolutions which the executive will definitely consider and implement by the grace of God.”<br /> <br /> He said he was confident that the summit would resolve some burning security issues.<br /> <br /> He said, “We should be positive and thinking in a very positive manner that we should be able to solve our problems. If we cannot solve the problems why did we even venture into it? I’m an optimistic person and I believe that coming together the executive and the legislature we can solve any problem in Nigeria if we have the support of Nigerians.<br /> <br /> “It is not only those of us in government that are suppose to do everything to solve these kind of challenges but we need the continuous, and relentless support of citizens to ensure that we are able to provide the kind of solutions we need.”<br /> <br /> On whether the legislature was in support of State Police as advocated by the Vice President, the Senate Leader said whatever he would be saying was his personal opinion as the entire members of the National Assembly would take a collective decision.<br /> <br /> Hear him, “Well, I am not a legislature as such because I am only one member of the legislature. But as a committee member of the adhoc committee on security and the review of security infrastructure in Nigeria, I believe that the suggestion by the Vice President that we should go the way of state Police and even consider community policing, is very good suggestion and we are going to take it on board in the National Assembly.”</div>

I think those that are benefiting from these crimes and criminality will be angry and they are Nigerians. It is not important because they are tying down the capital and good money of state that would have been used for other developmental projects.<br /> <br /> “You don’t have an important project that is not adding values whatsoever to the lives of the people of Kogi State. And such projects can be converted and used to solve the problems that you are confronted with today. She had also released several videos in the process to that respect.<br /> <br /> But, after almost a year of accusations and counter accusations, a shocked Nigeria woke up on Saturday, January 27th, to view a widely circulated online video where Otobo had gone to Apostle Suleman’s church in Auchi during the monthly Fire Night programme (an all night vigil programme) on Friday night of January 26th to confess before the mammoth crowd that she was used by “some powerful politicians and men of God” to destroy the character and reputation of Apostle Suleman.<br /> <br /> Otobo had, in the video, knelt down before the wife of Apostle Suleman, weeping profusely and pleading for forgiveness.<br /> <br /> But since her confession and plea for forgiveness, Otobo claims her sponsors, and her lawyer, Keyamo Chambers, made frantic efforts, including email and text messages now in the custody of the fiery preachers’ team, to persuade her to reverse her confession.<br /> <br /> She said part of such desperate efforts by her sponsors was the video of July 2017 released by an online medium where she claimed she was under pressure by Apostle Suleman to confess.<br /> <br /> But countering the old video immediately after its release, Otobo, in her hideout in Lagos, released a new video to debunk the former as carried by the online medium.<br /> <br /> Otobo added that the said video which was shot more than six months before her public confession at Apostle Suleman’s church was one of the tactics her sponsors used to goad her on what she described as the path of lies and falsehood.<br /> <br /> She reiterated that her confession at Apostle Suleman’s church was true and voluntarily done to set her troubled mind free.<br /> <br /> To strengthen her resolve to free her mind from those she said were her manipulators, she has deposed to an Affidavit of Disclaimer, stating, interalia, that the statement of defense filed at Ikeja high court, purportedly on her behalf by her lawyer was untrue.<br /> <br /> According to Otobo, the statement and photographs exhibited in the court processes did not emanate from her.<br /> <br /> She claimed, “I was invited to my lawyer’s chambers to sign a bundle of documents but when I asked what the bundle of documents were meant for, I was deceived and told they were to be sent to the Nigeria Police to release my cell phone seized from me in March 2017 when I was arrested by the Police for blackmail and extortion, following the complaint of Apostle Suleman.”<br /> <br /> She said “with my affidavit of disclaimer, my lawyer quickly ran to Ikeja high court where the civil suit filed by Apostle Suleman against me came up for hearing, seeking to withdraw as my counsel.”<br /> <br /> “In the said letter, my lawyer’s chambers surprisingly admitted that they never knew any known address of their client (Stephanie Otobo)  despite haven defended me so profusely.”<br /> <br /> Reacting to the Otobo vs Apostle Suleman’s case, a legal practitioner, Barrister Moses Undogwe said, “The whole thing appears more like a well orchestrated blackmail, calculated to inflict injury on the accused. The most disgusting aspect of it all is the online video clips. It is a case of blackmail.”<br /> <br /> Another legal luminary however submitted that Keyamo should have used an eagle-eyed legal instinct to detect the falsehood in the whole case before taking up the case, adding that, in keeping with the ethics of the legal profession, a counsel is not supposed to conduct media trial.<br /> <br /> However, when newsmen contacted Mr. Festus Keyamo Chambers for confirmation, one of his senior lawyers, Mr. Festus Afeiyadion, said, based on ethics of the profession, that they have hands-off the case.</div>

The Plantation Owners Forum of Nigeria had accused businessmen of setting up refineries in countries close to Nigeria in order to use them as channels through which rejected oil from other parts of the world especially Malaysia is exported to Nigeria.<br /> <br /> “It appears that there is a conspiracy by both the importers and smugglers of the commodity to kill local production while flooding the market with imported oil. Should government watch hopelessly and helplessly while this very important subsector of the agricultural sector is annihilated?”<br /> <br /> The agency observed that in the past few years, there had been an increase in the production of the commodity in the country with moribund oil palm plantations being revamped, smallholder planting established far beyond the traditional oil palm belt to include the fringe states such as Kogi, Kaduna and Nasarawa.<br /> <br /> It noted however that there was a controversy over Nigeria’s production figures, adding, “While Index Mundi puts Nigeria’s production at 970,000 tonnes annually (a figure that has stagnated for 11 years), available data from the Plantation Owners Forum of Nigeria put domestic and industrial demand for palm oil in the country at 2.8 million tonnes annually with production at 1.8 million tonnes.<br /> <br /> “This leaves a production shortfall of about one million metric tonnes – a deficit, which ordinarily should be balanced off by imports.”<br /> <br /> According to Agro Nigeria, the lack of agreement on production data has led to rising concern among industry players that more quantities of the commodity than the actual shortfall were either imported or smuggled into the country through land borders, a factor that has made the country a dumping ground for crude palm oil from Asian countries, especially Malaysia and Indonesia.<br /> <br /> It advised the Federal Government to embark on a series of interventions to save the industry from an impending collapse.<br /> <br /> “Specific interventions geared towards protecting the industry from importers and smugglers must be initiated if Nigeria must sustain her position as part of world’s top producers. For instance, where the Central Bank’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme does not cover oil palm because of its maturity period, government must seek alternative ways of incentivising plantation owners.<br /> <br /> “There must be increased security for oil palm plantations which have recently come under increased attacks from herdsmen. Hunters have in their search for game set bushes on fire, which sometimes gets out of control and they raze hectares of oil palm plantations as recently reported in a North-Central state (Plateau).<br /> <br /> “Poor infrastructure has also been the bane in the quest to achieve growth in the sector. Government must approve and execute infrastructural projects such as roads to reduce transportation costs, which add to the huge production costs of palm oil.”</div>

The review is in conjunction with the TUC. You can’t do it alone, all of us met and decided to put heads together and look at the realities on the ground.”<br /> <br /> Reacting to reports that the new minimum wage might not be paid this year because it was not captured in the 2018 budget, the NLC chief expressed confidence that the minimum wage bill would be passed by the National Assembly and implemented by the Federal Government.<br /> <br /> Mohammed explained that the government would implement the recommendations of the tripartite committee on minimum wage, stressing that President Muhammadu Buhari was committed to implementing the outcomes of the ongoing negotiations for new wages for workers.<br /> <br /> He said, “Who made the budget?  I believe if they (government) are serious, we can finish this matter towards the middle of this year, June, July.<br /> <br /> “If we can finish at that time, then before the end of the year, certainly the President must send whatever we agreed to the National Assembly for them to look at it and for him to assent it as a law, but I know that once we agreed, government would implement whatever is agreed.”<br /> <br /> The acting NLC President, however, complained about the slow pace of negotiations by the tripartite committee, noting that it had not held any meeting since it was inaugurated.<br /> <br /> “We had an inaugural meeting and they have not called for a meeting, I won’t call it a deliberate delay, but it looks as if there is a deliberate delay. We have not started discussion or anything,” Mohammed said.</div>

He described the assailants as “blood-thirsty maniacs on the rampage in the country, masquerading as herdsmen.”<br /> <br /> He said, “Historically, the Yoruba are known to have the capacity to defend themselves. These killers are testing the waters by burning the farm of Chief Olu Falae and invading the farms of prominent people in the South-West. We will no longer accept the activities of this murderous gang in Yoruba land. Enough is enough.<br /> <br />  “The diplomacy of the Yoruba on national issues, especially when it borders on security, should not be misconstrued for cowardice. It is part of our nature to accommodate people from other ethnic nationalities. But now, our people cannot go to their farms again because of the fear of the unknown. The Federal Government must immediately check the activities of these killers to avoid plunging the country into an avoidable war.”<br /> <br /> While describing the assassination of the SARS chief as “one killing too many,” Adams declared that the spate of insecurity in the country was worrisome.<br /> <br />  He said, “The first fundamental right of a Nigerian is the right to life. It is when you are alive that you can enjoy other rights. Once this right is taken away from you through killings and murder, you cannot enjoy any other right. Nigerians demand right to life. More than 1,000 Nigerians have been killed in the last one year. Is Nigeria at war?”<br /> <br /> He told Buhari that the solution to the various crises in the polity remained the restructuring of the country.<br /> <br /> Gani said, “Restructuring is the only system that will bring about a just, fair and egalitarian society. I welcome the report of the Governor Nasir el-Rufai APC Committee which recommended restructuring.<br /> <br /> “If Nigeria is going to survive as a nation, this country must be restructured. This is the time to have true federalism, state police, resource ownership and control, and an entirely new constitution deriving its legitimacy from the people.”</div>
