The Management of Ekiti State University, Ado Ekti has said that it has begun investigations into allegation of sexual misconduct involving one of its lecturers, Dr. O.O Aduwo.<br />
<br />
Mr. Bode Olofinmuagun, the Head, Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs of the institution in a statement he signed in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, said that the university had also queried the lecturer concerned.<br />
<br />
“The attention of the management of Ekiti State University has been drawn to a video that has gone viral on an alleged sex scandal involving one of our lecturers.<br />
<br />
“The video allegedly fingered one Dr O. O. Aduwo of the Department of Accounting as the culprit and (a) query has been issued to the accused lecturer, to state his own side of the story.<br />

<br />
“This will be followed by a panel which would dig deep into the matter,” he said.<br />
<br />
Olofinmuagun said that university would not condone any act of sexual harassment in the University.<br />
<br />
“And as such, it issued a query to the concerned lecturer to defend himself in the spirit of due process.<br />
<br />
“Thereafter, a panel of investigation will be constituted to get to the root of the matter, while the findings of the panel will be made public.<br />
<br />
“The general public is hereby assured that management will continue to be transparent and will not allow such a matter that could smear its good image to be swept under the carpet.”<br />
<br />
The lecturer was allegedly caught pants down a couple of days ago, trying to have carnal knowledge of one of his students, (name withheld), as a condition for her to pass his course.

The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to disregard the false information being circulated that fee is being collected from ministerial appointment lobbyists to submit Curriculum Vitae.<br />
<br />
Mr Olusegun Adekunle, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), made the call in a statement in Abuja.<br />
<br />
He said that the attention of the SGF had been drawn to the information being circulated, requesting interested Nigerians to submit their Curriculum Vitae for selection as cabinet members.<br />
<br />
Adekunle said that the false information had requested members of the public to submit their profiles at a fee to a non-existing office in the Office of the SGF.<br />

“The general public is advised to disregard such information as the Office of the SGF has no such mandate and has not requested for such information.<br />
<br />
“The originators of such false news are therefore, warned to desist from using the name of the SGF in their dubious and nefarious activities to fleece unsuspecting members of the public,” he said.<br />

There are strong indications that the immediate past governors of Lagos, Adamawa and Bauchi states, Akinwunmi Ambode, Mohammed Bindow and Mohammed Abubakar, may be part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s next cabinet.<br />

It was learnt that the leadership of the ruling  All Progressives Congress had resolved that all the APC governors who lost their re-election bids would “automatically’ become the ministerial nominees for their states.<br />
<br />
Ambode, Bindow and Abubakar failed in their re-election bids in the last general elections.<br />
<br />
The APC Organising Secretary, Adamawa State chapter, Ahmed Lawan, confirmed the development.<br />
<br />
Lawan, who said the leadership of the party had yet to call for any list from the state chapter, however, said Bindow might be “automatically” nominated for the state, following the directive from the national leadership of the party.<br />

Bindow lost his second-term bid to Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party in a rerun.<br />
<br />
Lawan, who is also aspiring for the office of the National Secretary of the APC, said, “That is the directive from the national leadership and there’s no nomination outside of Bindow. They never asked us to make any nomination. That is the arrangement; any state where the governor lost, the governor will be given a ministerial slot.”<br />
<br />
Following the development, Ambode who lost in a controversial primary election to Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu may represent Lagos State in the ministerial list while Abubakar who lost to Bala Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party is expected to clinch the Bauchi State slot.<br />
<br />
Presidency sources said Ambode enjoyed the favour of Buhari and his men and that there were strong indications he would make the list.

Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo has been served with court papers related to a rape lawsuit in the United States, according to documents filed by his lawyers on Friday.<br />

Five-time world player of the year Ronaldo is accused of rape by Kathryn Mayorga, who claims the Portuguese soccer star assaulted her in a Las Vegas hotel in 2009.<br />

Ronaldo, 34, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, has strongly denied the accusations against him, insisting their encounter was consensual.<br />
<br />
The legal process in the civil case had been held up as “federal court’s rules on serving foreigners” meant an identical state-level case needed to be dropped, Mayorga’s attorney said last week.<br />

A motion filed in federal court in Nevada on Friday said “the parties have agreed to deem Defendant effectively served,” meaning Ronaldo has officially received court documents in the case, allowing it to move forward.<br />
<br />
Former model Mayorga made the accusations against Ronaldo, who now lives in Turin, in a complaint filed last year.<br />
<br />
She said that while she had agreed to a financial settlement with Ronaldo shortly after the alleged incident, her emotional trauma at the time did not allow her to participate in the mediation process.<br />
<br />
Mayorga’s attorney added that the model agreed to an out-of-court settlement to keep her name from going public, but was inspired to speak out by the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment.<br />
<br />
Ronaldo’s lawyers have said that the non-disclosure agreement signed with Mayorga was “by no means a confession of guilt”.<br />
<br />
Following her renewed accusations, Las Vegas police reopened an investigation last year.<br />
<br />
Ronaldo is widely considered one of the greatest footballers in the history of the game, having won the Champions League title five times — once with Manchester United and four times with Real Madrid.<br />
<br />
He also led Portugal to the Euro 2016 title in France.

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has reiterated the commission’s determination to reform the country’s electoral process.<br />
<br />
Yakubu, who spoke yesterday in Abuja, said that steps for the reform of electoral processes were already ongoing ahead of the 2023 polls.<br />
<br />
Besides, the INEC boss said various recommendations, including that of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) in the 2019 polls, would form major inputs in the areas of reform.<br />
<br />
Yakubu, who spoke at a meeting with the Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission, Maria Arena, noted that a report will be submitted to the newly inaugurated Ninth National Assembly at the end of its review of last general elections.<br />

He said: “Every election in any democracy around the world is work in progress. We, therefore, look forward to the full EU EOM report and recommendations on the elections.<br />
<br />
“We are confident that there will be useful lessons for the Commission as we prepare for future elections.<br />
<br />
“Indeed, the report is coming at the right time as it will feed into our ongoing review of the conduct of the elections.<br />
<br />
“Let me assure you that the Commission will again quickly focus attention on the electoral legal framework in addition to several other areas of reform.<br />
<br />
“We will study in detail all your recommendations as part of our ongoing internal review of the 2019 general elections which we hope to conclude in the next two months.<br />
<br />
“Immediately thereafter, we shall engage with the leadership of the 9th National Assembly on areas that require legislation while implementing aspects of the reform within the powers of the Commission in full consultation with stakeholders.<br />
<br />
“There is so much work to do but little time ahead of us.<br />
<br />
“The EU has been part of Nigeria’s steady progress towards democratic consolidation since 1999.<br />
<br />
“The observations and recommendations of the EU Election Observation Mission to the 2015 general elections were particularly useful not only in the design of some important proposals for reforming the electoral legal framework but also in improving our electoral processes and procedures.<br />
<br />
“One of the key recommendations was that we merge the accreditation and voting processes on election day, which was subsequently implemented during the Bayelsa governorship election of December 2015 and in all subsequent elections.<br />
<br />
“The implementation of some of the other recommendations went a long way in enhancing our organisational and operational planning and strengthening our engagement with stakeholders.”<br />
<br />
The EU observation mission is expected to officially release the report and recommendations arising from the 2019 general elections on today in Abuja.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has unsealed some properties it allegedly linked to a former governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.<br />
<br />
Men believed to be EFCC personnel in a white-coloured bus with the number plate – BWR 627 AT – with police protection, on Thursday erased the markings from the buildings with white paint.<br />
<br />
Although the EFCC personnel did not disclose the reason for their action, sources said that the development might be connected with the anti-graft agency’s discovery that the properties were sealed in error.<br />
<br />
EFCC had on November 22, 2018, sealed the properties in different locations in the state capital, marking them with red ink with the inscription: “EFCC: Under Investigation KEEP OFF ABJ-HQ FAFI.”<br />

The buildings include a block of a two-storey commercial complex located opposite the Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission; the NTS Event Hall and Hotel, Fajuyi; Our Peoples 104.1FM, Fajuyi; and a building beside Spotless Hotel, GRA, Ado Ekiti.<br />
<br />
Others are a twin-building behind the Government House at the GRA; a two-storey commercial building at the Okesa Market; and a petrol station.<br />
<br />
Recall that Fayose had in a reaction through his media aide, Lere Olayinka, accused the EFCC of sealing houses belonging to innocent people in the state under the guise that they were linked to him.<br />
<br />
The two-storey commercial building at Okesa Market, owned by a medical doctor and former member of the State House of Assembly, Dr Samuel Omotoso, was among the sealed properties unsealed last December.<br />
<br />
Omotoso had personally removed the EFCC marks on the building, saying his action was consequent upon presentation of documents to EFCC to prove his family ownership of the property.<br />
<br />
When contacted on the development, Olayinka said, “We saw it like that and do not know the rationale behind it. We have not been told anything by the EFCC.”

Over the week, ‘This year’ crooner Jaywon was in the news over condemning rave of the moment, Zlatan for recreating his song ‘This year’, without his consent.<br />

Jaywon noted that the song is the most evergreen tune of this generation, adding that a lot of young artistes recreate other people’s songs without obtaining due permission.<br />

According to him: "the industry knows that everyone is trying to recreate the music but nobody is saying anything about it. A lot of them recreate other people’s music without even giving a shout out to the original owner, not to talk of saying they want to give credit to the owner. The industry has been quiet about it, nobody is talking. So, I just had to address the issue anyhow”, he said.<br />

Forget Neymar Jr., Brazil has Philippe Coutinho. The Barcelona star, scoring a brace, handed hosts Brazil a winning start to the Copa America Friday night in a 3-0 victory over Bolivia.<br />

Coutinho scored from the penalty spot early in the second half and added a close-range header three minutes later.<br />
<br />
Substitute Everton netted a sensational third five minutes from time to clinch a Group A victory for coach Tite’s tournament favorites in Sao Paulo.<br />
<br />
The build-up to the competition had been dominated by Neymar’s woes, firstly when he was accused of rape by a Brazilian model, and then when he damaged ankle ligaments in a friendly last week, forcing him out of the Copa.<br />

<br />
If Brazil’s first-half performance was anything to go by, the Paris Saint-Germain star was sorely missed, but Coutinho’s brace at least silenced the jeers that met the team at half-time.<br />
<br />
“Whistles are part of the game, the fans want us to win and play well, so that’s why they jeer,” said the match-winner, whose goals papered over the cracks of an at times disjointed performance.<br />
<br />
“We always want their support but we’re focused on the objective, which is the match,” Coutinho said.<br />
<br />
“Whistles or cheers, the important thing is to stay focused and get the win.”<br />
<br />
Brazil made a bright start and predictably dominated the early possession and chances.<br />
<br />
But surprisingly their greatest threat came from set-pieces with Coutinho’s corner delivery causing panic in the Bolivian backline.<br />
<br />
Bolivia’s goalkeeper Carlos Lampe made an instinctive block from a Roberto Firmino flick that came straight at him.<br />
<br />
And a few minutes later, towering centre-half Thiago Silva was left unmarked eight yards out to meet another Coutinho delivery, but he inexplicably headed well wide.<br />
<br />
The pitch at the Morumbi stadium wasn’t helping flowing football, with Bolivia in particular struggling to string passes together.<br />
<br />
“We’ve got to be honest, Brazil beat us and beat us well,” said Bolivia coach Eduardo Villegas.<br />
<br />
Brazil, wearing white shirts and blue shorts, weaved almost geometric patterns around their unambitious visitors but struggled to test Lampe.<br />
<br />
Their best chances came from Bolivian mistakes and Richarlison should have scored into an open goal when a woeful Lampe clearance went straight to him, but the Everton forward failed to lift the ball over defender Adrian Jusino, who headed clear from the edge of the 18-yard box.<br />
<br />
With 10 men behind the ball, Bolivia were proving hard to break down but Casemiro went close with what appeared to be a shanked cross that drifted just beyond Lampe’s far post with the goalkeeper scrambling to cover it.<br />
<br />
Tite’s team were treated to a barrage of jeers from the 67,000 crowd when the half-time whistle went.<br />
<br />
Bolivia’s best moment had perhaps been a cheeky nutmeg of Casemiro by Raul Castro on the edge of his own 18-yard box. It had been slim pickings.<br />
<br />
Fans’ spirits were quickly lifted after the restart, though, as Coutinho fired home from the spot on 50 minutes after a contentious penalty award.<br />
<br />
Richarlison’s attempted cross struck Jusino’s arm, which was by his side and only slightly away from his body, but after consulting the video assistant referee, Argentine handler Nestor Pitana pointed to the spot.<br />
<br />
Bolivia were stunned and just three minutes later their defence went missing as Firmino reached the bye line and chipped the ball to the back post for Coutinho to head home from barely two yards out.<br />
<br />
Reluctant to push men forward, Bolivia never looked like getting back into the match.<br />
<br />
“If you want to qualify (for the knock-out stages) you have to attack a little more,” admitted Villegas.<br />
<br />
And Coutinho’s corners continued to present Brazil with their best chances, as Marquinhos headed straight at Lampe from seven yards with 15 minutes left.<br />
<br />
The game had slowed to almost walking pace when substitute Everton scored a sensational third, cutting in from the left wing before firing an unstoppable shot into the far corner with Lampe rooted to the spot.

Maurizio Sarri is set to return to Italy to take the vacant managerial role at Juventus and bring the curtain down on a fretful one-year stay at Chelsea.<br />
<br />
Sarri met his targets by returning Chelsea to the Champions League via a third-place finish in the Premier League and winning the Europa League, claiming his first major trophy as a coach in the process.<br />
<br />
However, a failure to connect with the Chelsea support, public criticism of his players and a refusal to adapt his style of play meant Sarri was always unlikely to hang around for a second season at Stamford Bridge.<br />
<br />
The 60-year-old former banker becomes the ninth full-time manager to leave Chelsea since Roman Abramovich took charge of the club in 2003.<br />

Yet, for once the Russian didn’t wield the axe and waited instead until Juventus agreed to pay the compensation to free Sarri from the final two years of his contract on Thursday, according to reports in England and Italy.<br />
<br />
The Italian champions are keen on the brand of football Sarri imposed during three years at Napoli when only Juventus’ remarkable consistency prevented the Neapolitans a first league title since the days when Diego Maradona graced the San Paolo pitch.<br />
<br />
However, Sarri failed to transport that free-flowing football to Chelsea, despite making midfield playmaker Jorginho his first signing.<br />
<br />
After a brilliant start to the season that saw Sarri’s men keep pace with Premier League champions Manchester City and Champions League winners Liverpool, Chelsea fans soon rebelled at a ponderous possession game with little cutting edge.<br />
<br />
After a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal in January, Sarri labelled his players “very difficult to motivate”.<br />
<br />
Worse was to come as a 4-0 thrashing at Bournemouth was followed by a 6-0 demolition by Manchester City — Chelsea’s heaviest defeat in 28 years.<br />
<br />
The players soon started rebelling too. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted towards the end of the League Cup final to stay on the field for a penalty shootout, which Chelsea lost to City in February.<br />
<br />
Supporters also voiced their frustration, calling for Sarri’s sacking, during a controversial 2-1 win at relegated Cardiff a month later.<br />
<br />
Sarri, though, did manage to end on a high as Chelsea lost just one of their last eight Premier League games while the other contenders for a top-four finish stumbled towards the end of the season.<br />
<br />
Eden Hazard then bade farewell in fitting fashion by scoring twice in a 4-1 rout of Arsenal in the Europa League final to ensure Chelsea again ended the season with a trophy despite the turmoil.<br />
<br />
Yet, that will be an even tougher test for Sarri’s successor without Hazard, who joined Real Madrid earlier this week for a fee in excess of 100 million euros ($113 million).<br />
<br />
Chelsea currently cannot recruit a replacement with the club serving a two-window transfer ban handed down by FIFA.<br />
<br />
The club’s record goalscorer Frank Lampard is the favourite to return to Stamford Bridge after just one season in management at Derby County.<br />
<br />
Lampard, 40, led the Rams to the Championship playoff final where they fell just short of a return to the Premier League.<br />
<br />
The former England midfielder will not suffer any of the hostility encountered by Sarri in the Chelsea fan base.<br />
<br />
But it represents a huge gamble both for Lampard so early in his managerial career to take the huge step up to a top-six job, and for a club in the transition to back a rookie manager.

The Police Command in Enugu State said it had arrested a notorious armed robbery suspect, name withheld, terrorising residents of Holy Ghost and Rail-line axis of Enugu metropolis.<br />
<br />
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said this in a statement in Enugu on Friday that the suspect was arrested on June 13 by police operatives of the Central Police Station, Enugu.<br />
<br />
He said the police also recovered phones, bag containing some amount of money and a black plastic pistol the suspect used to inflict fear on unsuspecting victims.<br />
<br />
Amaraizu said that the suspect was nabbed following a distress call received after he allegedly robbed his victim of Infinix 5 phone on gunpoint.<br />

According to Amaraizu, the suspect is a resident of number 28 Mbanugo Street, Coal Camp in Enugu.<br />
<br />
He said that the suspect had been helping the operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command in their investigation into his nefarious activities.<br />

“Police operatives have commenced raiding of all suspected criminal hideouts within Holy Ghost and Rail-Line axis and other black spots through its Operation Puff Adder, he said.“<br />
<br />
He said the effort was to ensure that “our environment continue to remain safe and secured.“<br />
<br />
“The raid operations have become necessary, following the directive issued to police operatives by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Sulaiman Balarabe.’’

Edema Fuludu, a Match Commissioner to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), has advised the League Management Company (LMC) to deduct nine points from any club involved in any form of violence during Nigeria Premier League matches.<br />

The former Julius Berger FC of Lagos player said this in an interview with the newsmen on Friday in Lagos.<br />
<br />
Fuludu’s comments was against the recent pitch invasion and harassment of referee by supporters of Kano Pillars during the Super-Six match against Rangers of Enugu played at Agege stadium in Lagos.<br />
<br />
“We keep calling clubs to pay fines when there is such a breach, do they even pay these fines, because if they are paying, club managers would have found enough reasons to curb this menace.<br />

<br />
“Deduction of points is still the only way to curb this. Make a club a scapegoat and you will see, clubs will prefer to go on their knees appealing to fans not to foment trouble.<br />
<br />
“We are taking so many things for granted and our league won’t grow should such persist; should referees be afraid of discharging their duties? It’s not so insane climes.<br />
<br />
“Keep deducting points for any unruly behaviour either by fans or by players, everyone will shape up and we will see a difference. Desperate times calls for desperate measures,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
It was gathered that referee Quadri Adebimpe’s decision to award a late penalty to Rangers few minutes to the end of the match brought about the violence.<br />
<br />
Already, the LMC had imposed an N8 million fine on Kano Pillars and a suspended three-point deduction among other sanctions.

A victim, who was allegedly gang-raped by the son of a Lagos hotelier, Don-Chima George, and his friend, Olusegun Rasak, has sought to withdraw the case from court.<br />
<br />
It was reported that George, the son of the owner of the Dallankester Hotels, and Rasak were arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly drugging and raping the victim in the Lekki Phase 1 area of the state.<br />
<br />
The suspects had allegedly laced the victim’s drink with a substance that made her weak and took her to the hotel, where she was said to have been repeatedly raped, while the escapade was recorded.<br />
<br />
At Thursday’s proceedings, the victim in a letter dated June 3, 2019, and titled ‘Letter of Withdrawal’, addressed to the Director of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions in Lagos State, requested the discontinuation of the defendants’ prosecution.<br />

In the letter, which was read in court by Justice Abiola Soladoye, the victim stated that she was withdrawing the case because of family members’ intervention and for her integrity.<br />
<br />
However, the prosecutor, Akin George, opposed the complainant’s request.<br />
<br />
He said, “We do not have a directive from the office of the attorney-general and my Lord, the attorney-general is the complainant in this case.<br />
<br />
“In every criminal matter, the victims are natural witnesses and as we speak, there is no AG in office due to the change in power and we are also aware of the rule of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which states that even the Court of Appeal cannot stay an ongoing proceeding.<br />
<br />
“Our office initiated this action in court and there has to be a closure one way or the other. My Lord, we have submitted issues for the respective decisions of this court and we will bring the witness to state her position before the court, while we continue proceedings and await directives from the AG’s office.”<br />
<br />
Responding, the defence counsel, Tunji Ayanlaja, said while he shared the views of the prosecution that Lagos State originated the criminal suit, he disagreed that the absence of the AG had created a vacuum.<br />
<br />
He stated, “The constitution is so clear that when we do not have an AG in office, the solicitor-general takes over the function of the AG. My Lord, we are ready to proceed.<br />
<br />
“The unfortunate thing is that the defendants have been in prison ever since. The complainant, who is the witness, has developed cold feet for one reason or the other; this development is replete in the letter by the complainant and to meet the end of justice, I apply that your lordship should consider releasing the defendants on bail.”<br />
<br />
Justice Soladoye, however, noted that the court would continue with the proceedings and adjourned the case till June 18 for directives from the office of the AG.

The Toronto Raptors captured their first NBA crown on Thursday, defeating Golden State 114-110 to become the first league champion from outside the United States by dethroning the defending titleholders.<br />

Kyle Lowry and Pascal Siakam each scored 26 points while Kawhi Leonard and reserve Fred VanVleet each added 22 as Toronto won the best-of-seven series four games to two.<br />

Leonard was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career after the first in 2014 with San Antonio, which traded him to Toronto last July.<br />

“Last summer I was going through a lot. I just kept working hard and had my mind set on this goal right here,” Leonard said. “This is why I play basketball. This is what I work hard for. I’m glad to see it all pay off.”<br />

Injury-hit Golden State was already without two-time NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Kevin Durant, who returned in game five Monday after being sidelined for a month only to suffer a ruptured right Achilles tendon.<br />

Andre Iguodala added 22 points for the Warriors, Stephen Curry had 21 and Draymond Green contributed 11 points, 18 rebounds, and 13 assists.<br />

“Everybody on this team played with a lot of heart,” Green said. “We just came up a little short.”<br />

Golden State had a final shot to win trailing 111-110 but Curry missed a 3-pointer and Green called a timeout when the team had none, setting up three final free throws by Leonard to seal the victory.<br />

Leonard was named the NBA Finals Most Valuable Player for the second time in his career after the first in 2014 with San Antonio.<br />

The Raptors spoiled the Warriors’ farewell appearance at Oracle Arena. Golden State’s home since 1971 will be replaced by a new $1 billion venue in San Francisco next season.<br />

Toronto’s triumph made this first NBA Finals where road teams won five consecutive games.<br />
<br />
Lowry scored 21 points in the first half to give Toronto a 60-57 lead, hitting 7-of-10 shots from the floor and 4-of-5 from 3-point range. Thompson led the Warriors with 18 first-half points.

Nigerianeye recalls that on June 5, the star actor had narrated how he “miraculously” survived a ghastly car crash with only a “few cuts and bruises”.<br />

A firm incorporated in the British Virgin Islands will ask a British court on Friday for the right to seize up to $9 billion of Nigerian government assets – some 20% of the nation’s foreign reserves – over an aborted gas project in the Jonathan years.<br />
<br />
The case highlights a risk to Nigeria’s foreign assets, potentially clouding its appeal to some investors, Reuters reported.<br />
<br />
The request is part of a long-running saga over a 2010 deal in which the Nigerian government agreed to supply gas to a processing plant in Calabar, Cross River state that Process and Industrial Developments Ltd (P&ID) – a little-known firm founded by two Irish businessmen specifically for the project – would build and run.<br />
<br />
When the deal went south, P&ID won a $6.6 billion award at arbitration, based on what it could have earned during the 20-year agreement. It now says the total owed has ballooned to $9 billon because of interest accrued since 2013.<br />

Nigeria has tried to nullify the award, saying it was not subject to international arbitration but British courts rejected the argument.<br />
<br />
P&ID is now asking the Commercial Court in London to convert the arbitration into a judgement, which would allow them to try to seize international assets.<br />
<br />
A source close to President Muhammadu Buhari said they were fully aware of the matter and the government “is not sleeping”, adding they were optimistic the matter could be resolved in the courts. There are also proceedings pending at a U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.<br />
<br />
Buhari, who was inaugurated for a second term on May 29, has not yet appointed cabinet ministers, and officials contacted by Reuters said the lack of an attorney general or petroleum minister made it difficult for anyone to comment on the record.<br />
<br />
“This is a problem that the Nigerians are not facing up to in any serious way,” said Andrew Stafford, Q.C. of Kobre & Kim LLP, which is representing P&ID.<br />
<br />
Experts said it would be difficult for Nigeria to fully extricate itself.<br />
<br />
“Under UK legislation, state immunity does not operate to protect a sovereign state where it has entered into an arbitration agreement,” said Simon Sloane, a partner with UK law firm Fieldfisher.<br />
<br />
He added that going after state assets following arbitration had become a well-trodden path over the past 15 years and it would be difficult for Nigeria to avoid paying compensation.<br />
<br />
While assets that are used for diplomatic purposes – such as the Nigerian High Commission building in central London – were off the table, commercial assets were up for grabs.<br />
<br />
In 2008, a UK court ruled that proceeds of oil sales from Chad held in an international account intended to repay World Bank loans were fair game for seizure.<br />
<br />
Experts also said that the involvement of hedge fund VR Group, which has a stake in P&ID, signaled that it is unlikely to let the issue drop.<br />
<br />
“They could still come to a settlement,” Sloane said. “As it’s a consensual process the parties can agree to settle, and settle for significantly below the $9 billion figure.”

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) needs more quality events to expand the commercial potential of the fashion and lifestyle sector, Kevin Koya, fashion consultant says.<br />
<br />
Koya, who is also the creative director of ‘Connect And Chill’ – FCT’s leading networking event for people in the creative industry and investors, said more initiatives are needed to boost the industry.<br />
<br />
In an interview with the newsmen on Thursday, Koya said that a large number of designers and other creative people leave Abuja in their numbers because there are hardly avenues to showcase their works.<br />
<br />
He said, “Week in, week out, you see people migrating to Lagos to thrive there. The interesting thing is that Abuja has a solid market but these people don’t feel wanted because they cannot showcase.<br />

<br />
“In Lagos, there are quality events every day just for fashion designers, writers, singers or painters. The creative industry thrives there because attention is paid to it,” he said.<br />
<br />
Koya noted that the creative industry plays a major role in the development and tourism worth of any city and Abuja as the capital city, needs to hone it.<br />
<br />
He added that it was difficult for designers and artists to get the right funding and encouragement in Abuja, and there are few avenues to meet investors.<br />
<br />
Speaking on the contributions of his network to the growth and development of the Abuja creative space, Koya noted that there was still a lot of work to be done.<br />
<br />
He said, “Designers need loans and grants. Connect and Chill has been giving platforms to these creative individuals but much more is needed to make the industry better and bigger.<br />
<br />
“We have basically been an encouragement platform for upcoming brands to network and showcase without discrimination.<br />
<br />
“We are also working on the mindset of Abuja-based citizens to be more conscious of the creativity around them and show up, well dressed for these events.<br />
<br />
“We wish we could do more in terms of getting loans and grants for more designers and creatives to open up space and reduce the Abuja-to-Lagos migration,” Koya said.

The Federal Government may relax the ban on importation of vehicles through the land border.<br />

The government had in January 2017 ordered a ban on importation of vehicles through the land borders.<br />
<br />
The restriction on the importation of vehicles followed that of rice, whose imports through the land borders had been banned since April 2016.<br />
<br />
But the government may reconsider its decision after the successful implementation of a new initiative by the Nigeria Customs Service and the Customs Service of the Republic of Benin to automate and network all electronic information about incoming cargoes through the border.<br />

The Comptroller General, NCS, Col Hameed Ali (retd.), who was represented by the Assistant Comptroller, Information and Communication Technology, Benjamin Aber, at a stakeholders’ meeting on the new initiative, expressed confidence that with a successful implementation of the bilateral electronic connectivity programme between Nigeria and Republic of Benin, the Federal Government might lift the ban on items coming through the land border.<br />
<br />
Ali said the decision of the government to shut down importation of vehicles through the border was because the government did not have a reliable system that would assist in controlling importation.<br />
<br />
With declarations made for imports transiting from either of the countries electronically shared, the process of import and export would be done in a transparent manner and the government seeing such transparency would be convinced to relax its stance on land border importation.<br />
<br />
He said “Vehicles were formerly being imported through the Seme border, but suddenly it was banned because the pressure of enforcement of anti-smuggling for vehicles and claiming of lives and revenue were becoming too alarming, so the government had to restrict the importation through Nigerian ports.<br />
<br />
“When vehicles came through the land border, we did not have a record of how the imported cars came here and fake documentation became a common phenomenon. The ban was just a control measure against the practice.”<br />
<br />
He added, “By the time we successfully deploy this reliable, transparent and predictable programme that would assist government agencies, not only Customs, to control and regulate the importation of vehicles, the government may decide to relax such restrictions.”<br />
<br />
Ali said the establishment of the automated platform and bilateral connectivity meant that any truck that left the Republic of Benin, the information would already be remotely sent in English to Nigeria Customs Service system.<br />
<br />
He also gave the assurance that illegal checkpoints mounted by Customs officers and other security agencies along the border corridors would disappear automatically.<br />
<br />
“The roads also have to be fixed, because we cannot automate clearing of goods between the Customs and at the end, the stakeholders would be complaining,” he pointed out.<br />
<br />
He said the new platform would be deployed by June 20.

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Ambassador Babagana Kingibe on Wednesday accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of being one of the architects of the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.<br />
<br />
Recall that Kingibe was Abiola’s running mate on the platform of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).<br />
<br />
He said although Obasanjo attempted to convene a meeting of statesmen to address the aftermath of the June 12 crisis, President Muhammadu Buhari only attended the inaugural meeting and stopped because of the direction of the session.<br />
<br />
Kingibe said Buhari’s position was very clear over the years that the annulment was unjustified.<br />

He, however, parried questions on whether or not he betrayed the late Abiola, who died in his bid to reclaim his mandate.<br />
<br />
He said the celebration of June 12 as a Democracy Day should not be an occasion for recriminations or for talking on who betrayed who and who abandoned what.<br />
<br />
He said he had never spoken over the years because he was bemused and saddened by the annulment.<br />
<br />
Kingibe broke his silence for the first time on the annulment of the election while appearing on a television programme.<br />
<br />
He did not give details of the roles Obasanjo played to annul the presidential poll.<br />
<br />
He, however, justified why Buhari opted to honour Abiola.<br />
<br />
Kingibe said: “In the aftermath of the annulment, one of the architects of the annulment, former President Olusegun Obasanjo tried to get some elder statesmen (former presidents and so on); I think at the African Leadership Forum to see how the aftermath of the annulment could be addressed or to see how the problems arising from the annulment could be addressed.<br />
<br />
“And I think President Muhammadu Buhari did attend the meeting once, the inaugural meeting. I understood that when he (Buhari) saw the direction of the meeting, he decided not to attend again.<br />
<br />
“Every time the issue of the annulment came up over the years, his position was very clear; it was very firm that the election was free, fair and there was a clear winner. And that the annulment was unjustified.<br />
<br />
“So, having had the opportunity, perhaps, to right the wrong, I won’t be surprised he did so because it is in his character to try and do justice, however, belated and under whatever the circumstances.”<br />
<br />
Asked if he was surprised by the declaration of June 12 as Democracy Day, Kingibe said: “In a way, yes. I was surprised more by the timing of it than that it happened.<br />
<br />
“I was actually on lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia when the announcement was made. I was not surprised that it was made because I knew President Buhari felt strongly about June 12.”<br />
<br />
He paid glowing tributes to Abiola for being the arrowhead of the campaign for the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 mandate.<br />
<br />
He added:  “You know, June 12 was the creation of all Nigerians. All Nigerians were the architects of June 12.<br />
<br />
“Like all collective endeavours, there is always a leader, and one can never diminish the role of MKO Abiola in the final stages of this political journey to democracy in giving the leadership;  in being the arrowhead and the symbol of that struggle for democracy.”<br />
<br />
Kingibe was, however, non-committal on whether or not he betrayed Abiola.<br />
<br />
He said: “I think we are now going to celebrate the first of the June 12 being a Democracy Day. It is an opportunity to recall all the positive takeaways of the June 12 experience, what it represented and how we can learn lessons for the future.<br />
<br />
“I don’t think it as an occasion for recriminations, who betrayed who, abandoned what. The whole process leading to June 12 was a unique experience in Nigerian political journey towards democracy.<br />
<br />
“The facts of June 12, the elections that took place on that day, were unique. We have held many elections but the elections of June 12 were unique.<br />
<br />
“The annulment of the elections was unique in the life of all Nigerians and being unique and novel, I think everybody reacted accordingly to their understanding of what reaction was required.<br />
<br />
“I do not think that we have the time to go through who played what role, who did what on this occasion. All I said, let us celebrate the event of June 12.”<br />
<br />
Kingibe said he did his best to ensure that the annulment did not stand.<br />
<br />
His words: “Suffice it to say that there are many ways of pursuing a goal. To me, the immediate goal was to make sure that the annulment did not stand. That I had a very strong opinion about. Don’t forget, from the annulment and the enthronement of Interim National Government (ING), there were 82 to 84 days or so.<br />
<br />
“During those days, we all worked together to make sure the ING did not stand. And it did not stand.   Thereafter, we all had our reflections collectively and individually as to the way forward, and we moved on<br />
<br />
Responding to a question on why he has never spoken, he said: “Indeed, I never.<br />
<br />
“This is the first time that I am addressing the issue. Sometimes, I am bemused; I am saddened, perhaps sometimes I am not surprised about the comments that people were making about June 12; the claims on June 12, those who stood on June 12 and so on.<br />
<br />
“I know every detail of what happened and there is no way that one can tell the truth about June 12 without perhaps diminishing some people’s own;  without taking away from the significance and the solemnity of that day.<br />
<br />
“I have actually recorded my recollections of those days and those events. I hope that I will have the opportunity to air my recording one day. It is in video recording, not audio recording.”<br />
<br />
However, there was no comment from Obasanjo on Kingibe’s claim.<br />
<br />
Speaking through his media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo simply said: “No comment.”<br />
<br />
“I have no comment.”

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday honoured the winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election, the late Chief MKO Abiola, by renaming the Abuja National Stadium after him.<br />
<br />
The President said this in a speech he read at the first National Democracy Day celebration in Abuja, stating that he approved June 12 as the nation’s Democracy Day as part of the healing and reconciliation efforts for the annulment of the presidential election.<br />
<br />
He also said with purposeful leadership, the Federal Government could move 10 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.<br />

But the opposition Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate in the 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, said it was sad that the country was celebrating Democracy Day under Buhari, whose policies they claimed negated the June 12 spirit and ideals of the late Abiola.<br />
<br />
They said the Buhari administration had desecrated all the nation’s democratic values and despoiled the electoral processes just to have itself in office<br />
<br />
But in Abuja on Wednesday, Buhari honoured Abiola at the event witnessed by some of the children of the late politician, including Kola and Hafsat.<br />
<br />
Also at the event were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, service chiefs, President of Rwanda, Gambia, DR Congo, Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Namibia and Senegal. Among other dignitaries that also witnessed the event were representatives of the governments of Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Iran, Benin Republic, Ireland, Egypt, India and Niger.<br />
<br />
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi and Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi were some of the invited monarchs for the ceremony.<br />
<br />
Apart from honouring Abiola, the President also addressed diverse national issues and unfolded his government’s agenda on insecurity, economy and social security initiatives in the next four years.<br />
<br />
Buhari said, “As we all know, correcting injustice is a pre-requisite for peace and unity. As part of the process of healing and reconciliation, I approved the recognition of June 12 as Democracy Day and conferred on the late Chief MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe national honours, as I did with the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi.<br />
<br />
“The purpose was to partially atone for the previous damage done in annulling the Presidential election of that year. Today, I propose the renaming of the Abuja National Stadium. Henceforth it will be called Moshood Abiola National Stadium.”<br />
<br />
Buhari noted that terrorism and insecurity had become worldwide phenomena, noting that even the best policed countries were experiencing increasing incidents of unrest.<br />
<br />
He however said the security challenges facing the country were being met with superior strategy, firepower and resolve.<br />
<br />
According to him, most of the instances of inter-communal and inter-religious strife and violence were sponsored or incited by ethnic, political or religious leaders, who he claimed, hoped to benefit by exploiting divisions and fault lines, thereby weakening the country.<br />
<br />
The President said, “When I took the oath of office on May 29, 2015, insecurity reigned. Apart from occupying 18 local governments in the North-East, Boko Haram could at will attack any city including the Federal Capital Territory, could threaten any institution including bombing the United Nations building and the Police headquarters in Abuja.<br />
<br />
“Admittedly, some of the challenges still remain in kidnappings and banditry in some rural areas. The great difference between 2015 and today is that we are meeting these challenges with much greater support to the security forces in terms of money, equipment and improved local intelligence. We are meeting these challenges with superior strategy, firepower and resolve.”<br />
<br />
Buhari said as the chairman of ECOWAS, he would host a regional security summit of heads of states in the Sahel to develop a joint strategy to address security challenges in the region.<br />
<br />
The President added that Nigeria had all ingredients to become a world leader.<br />
<br />
“We have water, arable land, forests, oil and gas and vast quantities of solid minerals. We are blessed with an equable climate. However, the bulk of our real wealth lies in agriculture, livestock, forestry and mining. We possess all the ingredients of a major economic power on the world stage.<br />
<br />
“What we require is the will to get our acts together. And our strength is in our people – our youth, our culture, our resilience, our ability to succeed despite the odds,” he added.<br />
<br />
On the fight against corruption, Buhari said a lot of progress had been made, stressing however that corruption had found a way of fighting back.<br />
<br />
He said, “At the heart of inequality and insecurity, is pervasive corruption. When we took office we realised that if you fight corruption, corruption will fight back – and we have seen this at all levels. For Nigeria to progress, a collective resolution to address corruption and foster broad-based prosperity is required to create a country that is not only for a few privileged, but for all Nigerians.”<br />
<br />
He said the Manufacturing Purchasing Managers Index, which he claimed was the gauge of manufacturing activity in the country, had also risen for 26 consecutive months since March 2017.<br />
<br />
This, he said, indicated continuous growth and expansion in the manufacturing sector.<br />
<br />
Buhari however bemoaned the poor condition of roads leading to the nation’s seaports, which he said, had affected productivity.<br />
<br />
He said, “It still takes too long for goods to clear at our seaports and the roads leading to them are congested. It still takes too long for routine and regulatory approvals to be secured. These issues affect our productivity and we are committed to addressing them permanently.”<br />
<br />
According to the President, the new mandate that Nigerians gave him through the last election had revived the will to rebuild and reposition Nigeria through collaboration with states, council areas, legislators and diplomatic corps.<br />
<br />
He also noted that Nigeria would improve on initiatives to reduce reliance on imported products and grow local production.<br />
<br />
Buhari said, “For small-scale enterprises in towns and cities, we shall expand facilities currently available so that we continue to encourage and support domestic production of basic goods and reduce our reliance on imported goods.<br />
<br />
“For the next four years, we will remain committed to improving the lives of people by consolidating efforts to address these key issues as well as emerging challenges of climate change, resettling displaced communities and dealing decisively with the new flashes of insecurity across the country, and the impacts on food scarcity and regional stability.”<br />
<br />
Buhari said over the next four years, his government would assemble a strong team to implement its transformative plans in education, health, power, road construction and other sectors.<br />
<br />
He said, “We will see significant focus, resource and where necessary reform, in tertiary and technical education to reposition Nigeria’s workforce for the modern technological age. We will accelerate investments in primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare programmes.”<br />
<b><br /></b><b>We can move 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years – Buhari</b><br />
<br />
Also, Buhari said the APC-led Federal Government could move 100 million Nigerians out of poverty within 10 years.<br />
<br />
“In the face of these challenges, our government elected by the people in 2015 and re-elected in March has been mapping out policies, measures and laws to maintain our unity and at the same time lift the bulk of our people out of poverty and onto the road to prosperity.<br />
<br />
“This task is by no means unattainable. China has done it. India has done it. Indonesia has done it. Nigeria can do it. These are all countries characterised by huge burdens of population.<br />
<br />
“China and Indonesia succeeded under authoritarian regimes. India succeeded in a democratic setting. We can do it.<br />
<br />
“With leadership and a sense of purpose, we can lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.”<br />
<b><br /></b><b>I renamed UNILAG after MKO, says Jonathan</b><br />
<br />
Meanwhile, former President Goodluck Jonathan has said the Federal Government is being economical with the truth by claiming that Buhari is the first Nigerian leader to honour Abiola.<br />
<br />
Jonathan in a statement by his media aide, Reno Omokri, on Wednesday said this claim was ridiculous as he renamed the University of Lagos after Abiola during his tenure.<br />
<br />
He said, “This is a ridiculous assertion as the facts will prove…Between the National Stadium and the University of Lagos, which is more prestigious and which would require more courage to rename?<br />
<br />
The former president also accused Buhari of inability to take courageous action against his cabinet members allegedly involved in corruption cases.<br />
<br />
Jonathan said, “Recalled that former President Jonathan took several other courageous decisions during his Presidency, including firing two ministers when questions of impropriety were raised against them.<br />
<br />
“There have been a number of serious and proven cases of impropriety involving Muhammadu Buhari’s ministers, including two incidents of clearly established cases of certificate forgery. Did Mr Buhari have the courage to move against them?”<br />
<b><br /></b><b>Buhari’s speech showed disregard for tenets of democracy – PDP</b><br />
<br />
However, the PDP in its reaction, said it was a national tragedy that Nigeria’s Democracy Day was celebrated under the Buhari-led APC government.<br />
<br />
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement also insisted that the Buhari Presidency and the APC should not have celebrated Democracy Day when they were still overburdened by the guilt of their questionable presidential electoral victory.<br />
<br />
Ologbondiyan said, “President Buhari did not express any form of remorse for the barefaced constitutional violations, assault on institutions of democracy, particularly the legislature and the judiciary; human rights violations, assault on the media; and the general siege mentality in the polity under his watch.<br />
<br />
“It is sad that on a day like this, Mr President dwelt on false performance claims and had no soothing word for millions of compatriots that have been subjected to the worst form of economic misery that they are now resorting to suicide and slavery mission abroad.”<br />
<br />
The PDP spokesman also said the speech had no words of hope for the victims of escalated insurgency, kidnapping, banditry and bloodletting in the country.<br />
<br />
He said, “How can this administration superintend over a Democracy Day celebration when it has questions of constitutional violations, electoral manipulations, media clampdown, victimisation of opposition, emasculation of free speech, brutalisation, arbitrary arrests and illegal detention, as already detailed in various reports, including those by the United States Department of State?”<br />
<br />
Ologbondiyan stated that it was disheartening that the same electoral manipulation, violations and injustices for which the icon of June 12 Democracy Day, Chief Moshood Abiola died, had allegedly brazenly taken the centre stage under the APC misrule.<br />
<b><br /></b><b>Buhari’s actions negate what June 12 stands for – Atiku</b><br />

Also its presidential candidate said it was not enough to declare June 12, Democracy Day.<br />

Atiku, in a statement, said, “Suffice it to state that the idea of June 12 is not merely to declare it as a Democracy Day – much as celebratory and commendable it might seem, the idea behind the event of June 12, 1993 embodies something much more bigger than that.<br />
<br />
“It was a threshold moment in our national life that demands of us, as democrats, to embark on soul-searching and ask the salient question of all time: how better off are Nigerians?<br />
<br />
“It is not enough to declare June 12 a Democracy Day when the government of the day is disrespectful of the rule of law and wantonly disregards court orders on issues that border on fundamental human rights.<br />
<br />
“It is not enough to declare June 12 a work-free day when a disproportionate number of citizens are not sure of where their next meal will come from and when the sanctity of their lives is not guaranteed.<br />
<br />
“It is not enough to declare June 12 a work-free day when freedom of the press, and of speech, fundamentals of democracy is being assailed.<br />
<br />
“As a compatriot who stood shoulder to shoulder with the icon of the June 12 struggle, the Chief Moshood Abiola of blessed memory, I know first-hand that the choice of ‘hope’ as his campaign slogan wasn’t merely a populist tokenism.”<br />
<br />
He stated that Abiola did not mean to deceive Nigerians with a hope he could not deliver.<br />
<br />
Atiku said, “It is therefore not acceptable that an administration which had an opportunity of four years to deliver the promise of change to Nigerians, not only reneged on that promise, but propelled the country into a near-comatose state will lay claims to being a true friend of the June 12 struggle.<br />
<br />
“To be a lover of June 12 is to believe in the common good of the people. June 12 is about the political leadership having the focus to retool the Nigerian economy. It is about having the skills to create wealth and jobs for the teeming mass of unemployed Nigerians. It is not about the inclination for shared pains; it is about shared prosperity.”<br />
