Theo Walcott gave Arsene Wenger a timely reminder of his qualities with a brace in Arsenal’s 5-2 friendly thrashing of Benfica as Alexandre Lacazette made his Gunners home debut in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.<br />

Walcott is in danger of being reduced to a fringe figure following a disappointing campaign that ended with the England winger being left out of Arsenal’s FA Cup final win against Chelsea in May.<br />
<br />
As if that wasn’t depressing enough for Walcott, he has watched Wenger splash out a club record £52 million ($68 million) for Lyon striker Lacazette and make a so far unsuccessful attempt to sign Monaco winger Thomas Lemar.<br />
<br />
But, in his 11th year with Arsenal, 28-year-old Walcott served notice he isn’t going to be cast aside without a fight as he produced two clinical finishes and laid on the cross for a Lisandro Lopez own goal.<br />
<br />
Olivier Giroud and Alex Iwobi were also on target as Arsenal ran riot in their first match in the four-team friendly tournament at the Emirates Stadium.<br />
<br />
Lacazette, introduced to a huge roar, had few chances to impress in his brief cameo, but the France international is likely to start against Sevilla on Sunday.<br />
<br />
Franco Cervi and Eduardo Salvio were the scorers for Portuguese champions Benfica, who looked lost at the back following the sale of Sweden defender Victor Lindelof to Manchester United.<br />

Walcott started for Arsenal with Lacazette on the bench and wantaway forward Alexis Sanchez not due to return to training until Sunday after Confederations Cup duty with Chile.<br />
<br />
But Walcott’s headline-grabbing show came after Arsenal fell behind in the 11th minute as Jonas set up Cervi to drill a low strike past David Ospina.<br />
<br />
Sead Kolasinac, a free transfer recruit from Schalke, made his reputation as a buccaneering left-back and, although the Bosnian was deployed in a back three by Wenger, he got forward to help Arsenal equalise in the 24th minute.<br />
<br />
Pressuring Pizzi into surrendering possession as the Benfica defender tried to shepherd the ball out of play inside his own area, Kolasinac saw goalkeeper Julio Cesar was out of position and chipped a cross towards Walcott, who volleyed home from 10 yards.<br />
<br />
Walcott bagged his second in the 32nd minute, converting a Francis Coquelin cross from close range.<br />
<br />
Coquelin then limped off having been caught on the ankle earlier in the half and Benfica equalised in the 39th minute.<br />
<br />
Ainsley Maitland-Niles squandered possession outside the Arsenal penalty area and Pizzi pounced to set up Salvio, whose deflected effort beat Ospina.<br />
<br />
But Wenger’s side regained the lead in the 52nd minute when Walcott’s cross towards Giroud was deflected into his own net by the lunging Lisandro.<br />
<br />
Giroud then netted Arsenal’s fourth with a volleyed finish from promising youngster Reiss Nelson’s pin-point cross and Iwobi made it five with a ferocious strike into the roof of the net in the 70th minute.<br />
<br />
In Saturday’s other Emirates Cup match, Sevilla beat German Bundesliga runners-up RB Leipzig 1-0 thanks to Wissam Ben Yedder’s 34th-minute penalty.<br />

Arsene Wenger has reiterated his determination to hold onto Alexis Sanchez and slammed claims the unsettled Arsenal star’s dose of the flu was part of his plan to engineer a transfer.<br />

Sanchez has just one year left on his Arsenal contract after refusing to sign the club’s offer of a new deal and it is believed the Chile forward wants to move to a team in the Champions League.<br />
<br />
Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all interested in the 28-year-old, who has yet to return to pre-season training with Arsenal as he recovers after playing for Chile at the Confederations Cup.<br />
<br />
Sanchez was due back at Arsenal on Sunday, but his return to England has been delayed by at least 48 hours after he caught the flu, revealing the illness with an social media picture of himself huddled under a blanket with the caption ‘sick’.<br />
<br />
Some cynical Arsenal fans fear Sanchez’s failure to report on time is part of his plan to leave the Premier League club.<br />
<br />
But Gunners boss Wenger, speaking after his side’s 5-2 thrashing of Benfica in the Emirates Cup on Saturday, made it clear Sanchez will not be sold.<br />
<br />
“No development, always the same, He is staying, of course,” Wenger said.<br />
<br />
Asked how he read Sanchez’s delayed arrival, Wenger refused to criticise his player.<br />
<br />
“He has flu. He texted me to say he will come back as soon as possible. We are in touch with him and his doctor,” he said.<br />
<br />
“Your job is to be suspicious, your job is built on mistrust and mine is built on trust, that is why I prefer my side.<br />
<br />
“There is no basic problem. He would have come back tomorrow but he will be here on Tuesday. He is flying back as soon as he is in a position to.”<br />
<br />
Wenger insisted the uncertainty over Sanchez’s future wouldn’t prove a distraction in the same way speculation over the manager’s contract caused such chaos before he signed a new deal at the end of last season.<br />
<br />
“It’s not the same. It’s different with a manager who has to take a global view of the club. I think the players who have one year on their contract have to respect their contract and play under it,” he said.<br />
<br />
Probed on whether Sanchez had personally told him whether or not he wanted to stay, Wenger added: “I cannot reveal to you what he says to me always. It is a secret conversation. I speak to all the players.”<br />
<br />
Wenger also refused to say if he would make another bid for £50 million-rated ($65 million, 56 million euro) Monaco winger Thomas Lemar after having several offers rejected.<br />
<br />
“We don’t speak about how our negotiations go. We come out once it’s done or not done,” he said.<br />
<br />
“We are active in the transfer market in general. At the moment there is nothing special to say on this case.”

“The president is dying. I am not dying. I will have an ailment here and there but bodywise, all my internal organs are very firm, very strong.”<br />
<br />
Mugabe, who looks frail, had walked onto the stage slowly but without assistance.<br />
<br />
The issue of who will succeed the veteran Zimbabwean leader has deeply divided the ruling party, with two factions supporting Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Mugabe’s wife, Grace.<br />
<br />
Grace had on Thursday challenged Mugabe to name his preferred successor, to end divisions over the future leadership of ZANU-PF.<br />
<br />
She repeated the call on Saturday, adding that Mugabe would lead the process to choose his eventual successor.

No fewer than eight persons were killed and 14 others sustained in Friday night suicide bomb attack in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno.<br />

The incident occurred on Friday when two female suicide bombers hit an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in the area.<br />
<br />
The Chairman of the council, Alhaji Rawa Modu, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Maiduguri on Saturday.<br />
<br />
Modu, who visited some of the victims, said that the suicide bombers infiltrated into the camp and detonated explosives.<br />
<br />
“Two female suicide bombers attacked the 24 Housing estate at about 9: 30 p.m on Friday.<br />
<br />
“Seven persons died on the spot and one other died in the hospital, while 14 other persons were receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri.<br />
<br />
Modu said that the council had distributed metal detectors to members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) to enhance security at the camp.<br />
<br />
The Police and military authorities were yet to comment on the incident.

According to Kanu “We are in the land of Biafra. I have come to Owerri to spread the good news of the coming of Biafra Republic. I don’t want you people to be deceived. Restructuring does not have any meaning and I want you people to go and tell Ohanaeze Ndigbo.”<br />

“There is no freedom in Nigeria. All their children are abroad studying and enjoying good environment.<br />

“Only referendum can solve the problems of Nigeria. Power devolution is not the solution. Resource control is not our problem. What we need is Biafra. They are going about deceiving our people in the name of restructuring.<br />

“I want to say it again. There will be no election in Anambra and there will be no election in 2019, in Igboland. And there will be no election in Imo state.<br />

The contractor handling the reconstruction and expansion works on the Lagos-Ibadan dual carriageway, Section II, along Shagamu-Ibadan, with Contract No. 6205, has suspended further execution of the project due to a total outstanding debt of N8.94bn.<br />

Reynolds Construction Company Nigeria Limited, in a letter addressed to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, and dated June 2, 2017, called the attention of the minister to the worsening financial situation of the project and pleaded for his intervention in order to ease the continuation of work on the site.<br />
<br />
The letter which was received and acknowledged by the office of the minister on June 5, 2017, and made available to our correspondent in Abuja on Friday, revealed that as of when it was sent, the outstanding debt on approved certificates for certified works on the project was N7.83bn.<br />
<br />
Reynolds told the minister that the 28-day window allowed for the payment of the certificates as contained in the conditions of the contract between parties had “long expired.”<br />
<br />
The firm said, “In addition, there is another Certificate (No.19) of N1,108 334, 258 under processing. Thus, making a total of N8, 937,611,552. The mounting debt profile on this project is worrisome.”<br />
<br />
The letter, which was signed by the firm’s Managing Director, who simply gave his name as M. Nakhla, stated that RCC was committed to the successful completion of the project, but maintained that funding was a challenge.<br />
<br />
It said, “In view of the dire situation, we shall be constrained to suspend further execution of work unless there is an appreciable improvement in the project’s cash flow and adequate funding arrangement is put in place for further works. This painful decision is bound to delay the scheduled completion of the project, in addition to the inherent cost implication.<br />
<br />
“This letter is, therefore, a notice of our intention to suspend further execution of the project, pursuant to Clause 68(8) of the Conditions of Contract. In that unfortunate event, we shall require payment of the outstanding debt as well as full coverage of our attendant expenses and losses before the resumption of work. A corresponding extension of time shall also become imperative, pursuant to Clause 44 of the CC.”<br />

The Nigerian Army is to deploy 230 personnel, including 19 officers and 211 soldiers to Liberia, Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai has said.<br />

Speaking in Kaduna at the end of a a four-week intensive training on leadership and peacekeeping for the personnel, Buratai, charged them to shun acts that could tarnished Nigeria’s image.<br />
<br />
“You must observe human rights, and respect the cultural and religious sensitives of Liberians,” he said.<br />
<br />
The army chief said that since 1960, Nigeria has deployed over 20, 000 troops to 40 peacekeeping missions in Africa and across the world.<br />
<br />
Earlier the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre, Jaji was renamed Martin Luther Agwai International Leadership and Peacekeeping Centre, in recognition of his commitment to peacekeeping efforts and excellent service.<br />
<br />
The centre was established in 2004 by Agwai as a Wing, when he was the Chief of Army Staff.<br />
<br />
Speaking, Agwai noted that peacekeeping was gradually becoming an intra-country issue with the military at the centre stage following internal conflicts such as ethnic, religious other crises.<br />
<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The last visit by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to Ebonyi State elicited divergent views from the citizens of the state, especially when he said he was going to shut down the state for three days in his next visit. There were cheers. But there were audible grumbles in many quarters.<br />

Some are of the view that the IPOB leader had taken his agitation too far going by his pronouncements. Others who listened to him were basking in the euphoria that the state had been taken over by Biafra agitators.<br />

This development had stirred lots of mixed feelings and reactions from Ebonyi people, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP and even other Pro-Biafra agitators in the state.<br />
<br />
The leadership of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State had earlier at the party’s secretariat warned that even as they were not averse to genuine agitation, the state was opposed to protests that could degenerate into violence and youth restiveness in the state.<br />
<br />
The party chairman, Chief Onyekachi Nweboyi and the Youth Leader, Elder Sam Igwe in separate press briefings said that the youths in the state should avoid being lured into breaching the laws of the land. Igwe, the youth leader who thronged the party office with youths numbering thousands told them to remain peaceful and avoid any clash<br />
<br />
He noted that the IPOB leader as a notable son of Igbo land should have informed the appropriate authorities of his visit instead of sneaking into the area last weekend when thousands of his supporters marched out to receive him.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, in a chat with Vanguard, the Ebonyi State leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, Biafra Independent Movement, BIM, Mr. Nwifuru John added that Raph Uwazuruike of MASSOB (BIM) remains the number one and father of Biafra agitation in the country.<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br />
“Uwazurike has done many things since then. He brought back Biafra currency, even Biafra uniforms that we are wearing now; Uwazurike is the one that brought them. He has achieved so many things before other groups came out and he still loves the groups because he cannot do it alone. We need more Pro-Biafra groups.<br />
<br />
“We were not aware of Nnamdi Kanu’s visit to Ebonyi State but through our security agents, we got the information. But we didn’t want to stop them because what they are doing is what we are doing but they should maintain non-violence. MASSOB (BIM) maintains non-violence.<br />
<br />
“We want to inform the world that we MASSOB (BIM) are still with Uwazurike. We want to let the world know that Uwazurike is the number one citizen of Biafra. He is the father of all Biafra agitators in the country.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“After 1970 when the civil war ended, nobody ever mentioned the name Biafra till 1999. It was Uwazurike that came out openly and mentioned the name Biafra and raised the flag. Nigeria’s security killed many of the Biafra boys because of that  flag. He maintained non-violence. The security was still shooting people without arms even when Uwazurike was shouting that they were non-violent.”<br />
<br />
Addressing the crowd at Aziokwu Primary School close to Abakaliki Mechanic Village, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu vowed that the conduct of 2019 general election will not hold in all the Biafra states across the country, adding that nobody can stop the actualization of the sovereign State of Biafra no matter whose ox is goad.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He added that Ebonyi State remained one of the topmost Biafra states with rich natural resources put in place by God and that nobody can stop Ebonyi and other states from being part of Biafra.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"> “I will teach our enemies what they don’t know. I will teach them that nobody can stop Biafra because Biafra has come to stay. I will transverse all parts of Biafra lands and other areas without anybody stopping me including police and soldiers who are always in the habit of harassing our people.<br />
<br />
“I will continue to walk in the midst of these security agents as you can see and nobody will arrest me. They know they can’t stop Biafra. I have come to declare Ebonyi a Biafra state and when next I come, I will shut down the state for three days”.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Many are still wondering whether Mazi Kanu really understood the meaning of shutting down a State for three days in the name of Biafra agitation. Ebonyi is indeed a peaceful state and the tolerance of the people should not be tested on the platform of youthful exuberance and high-handedness.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The tension his visit generated could have led to a full scale civil disorder, if not for the ingenuity and intelligence of security agents and maturity of Ebonyi youths in the State.<br />

Also, a Public Affair Analyst, Mr. Felix Uka stated that: “I watched with bewilderment how old men and women, young boys and girls, the educated and the illiterate left what they were doing to catch a glimpse of Nnamdi Kanu and hear him. This is how revolution grows; it starts from the mind; he has caught the interest and attention of a number of people. Nonetheless, all I can say for certainty is in line with Acts 5:39 “but if it is of God, you will not be able to stop or overthrow or destroy them; you might even be found fighting against God”.<br />

Only an appeal of the judgement can save the prisoners from the horrific experience I witnessed them go through at court yesterday. It is particularly of concern to me, more because no convicted fraudsters, politician or vandals of our common wealth has ever been sentenced to such hellish experience of thirty six strokes of canning twice in a week. Could it be because the convicts were too poor to afford legal representation? </div>

Kogi Government has released N2 billion to the 21 local government councils in the state as their share of the N6.2 billion of the Paris Club refund the state received from the Federal Government.<br />

A statement issued in Lokoja on Saturday by the Commissioner of Finance, Mr Idris Ashiru, said the government’s share of the refund was N4.02 billion.<br />
<br />
He said that N1. 716 billion out of the government share had been released for the payment of May and June salaries of teaching and non-teaching staff in tertiary institutions.<br />
<br />
Ashiru said that N1. 323 billion was expended on the payment of May and June pensions of retired workers.<br />
<br />
The commissioner added that N987, 540, 000 was expended on the payment of May salary of workers in ministries, departments and agencies.<br />
<br />
“In addition, the Ministry of Finance made additional fund of N3,219,145,997.12 available to the Accountant-General to clear arrears of May salary of civil servants.<br />
<br />
He assured that workers who were indicted by the screening exercise and granted clemency by Gov. Yahaya Bello would be paid.<br />
<br />
Ashiru said that staff of the judiciary, the Legislature and political office holders had since been paid their June salaries.<br />
<br />
“It is important to note that Gov. Yahaya Bello directed that the state should use all the Paris Refund to clear outstanding salaries and pensions as against the undertaken with the Federal Government to use only 75 per cent of the refund,” the statement quoted Ashiru as saying.</div>

The Enugu State Police Command on Saturday called for more collaboration with residents of the state through its distress call numbers and social media addresses.<br />

The command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu that members of the public should collaborate with the police to sustain the tempo of peace in the state.<br />

<br />

<br />
“Members of the public should not tamper with any suspicious object discovered anywhere, either in the farm, house or road, but should report promptly to the nearest police station,’’ he advised.<br />
<br />
The spokesman said that the command would continue its partnership with sister security agencies to keep the tempo of crime and criminality at its lowest ebb in the state.</div>

The wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari, has said many Nigerian women fall victim to human trafficking due to poverty and illiteracy.<br />

She urged wives of state governors to, therefore, intensify women emancipation programmes in their various states.<br />

Buhari said this at the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons Lecture, organised by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons in Abuja.<br />

The lecture, titled, ‘Trafficking in Persons: Human security implications for Nigeria,’ was delivered by Kevin Hyland, the United Kingdom Anti-Slavery Commissioner.<br />
<br />
Buhari in her speech, which was delivered by the wife of former Kastina State Governor, Mrs. Grace Shema, said, “Indeed, with the scourge of human trafficking, our response as a people should show action. The time has come for us as a people to invest in the development of the Nigerian society through the uplifting of our standards and abolition of cultures that have held us back.<br />
<br />
“I am committed to the process of empowering women and youths. This is integral to the emancipation of women from poverty, illiteracy and disease, which lead them to helplessness and human trafficking. I call on the wives of governors, as mothers of their states, to initiate actions that will culminate in the elimination of this violence, by coming up with programmes at the state level.”<br />
<br />
Director-General, NAPTIP, Julie Okah-Donli, said the agency had so far secured the conviction of 323 traffickers and rescued more than 11,000 victims of trafficking in the country.<br />
<br />
She urged the state governments to make access to education compulsory and free, adding that from January to July 2017, 3,362 Nigerians had been deported from European and North African countries.</div>

But he insists PSG’s desire to pay Neymar’s €222million buyout clause is not his only issue.<br />

“We will [make a complaint about PSG] because they infringe UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules and also the European Union’s competition rules,” Tebas said.<br />

“We will make a complaint to UEFA and if they don’t do anything we will take it to the competition tribunals in Switzerland and Brussels. And, from there, we don’t rule out going through the courts in France and Spain.<br />

“It’s not [just to do with Neymar]. We planned [to make the complaint] earlier. If we’ve not done it sooner it’s because we planned to take the problem to UEFA’s people first and I said that to president [Aleksander] Ceferin, but there hasn’t been time.<br />

“What worries me is La Liga can’t just sit around with its arms crossed. It’s not about Barca, it’s about Spanish football. Today it is Barca but tomorrow it could be Real [Madrid], Atletico or another team.”</div>

We waited for 2 hours without any information from the airline or the airport authorities.</span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: white; text-align: start;"> After 2 hours, I and my colleagues got so hungry that we had to look for food at the closest location to the airport which is the Nysc camp mammy market all because the airport is at a remote location far away from the town. All passengers at the airport kept complaining when minutes became hours and there no sign of us taking off soon. </span></span></div>

Before I knew it his aides rushed into the plane and started raining abuses on me and slapping me...dragged me out of the plane that who gave me the right to talk to "their governor" that he has the right to keep all of us till tomao if he wants to.</span></span></div>

Well he later called them to order and told them he wanted to see me. The Performing Musicians Employers Association of Nigeria (PMAN) has accused Lai Mohammed, minister of information, of intellectual property theft.<br />

The association, in a statement on its Facebook page, said the recently convened ‘Creative Industry Financing Conference’ heavily contained ideas from a proposal it had earlier submitted to the minister.<br />
<br />
PMAN said its proposal was entitled ‘Bar Coding Technology for the Creative Industry in Nigeria’.<br />
<br />
The proposal which detailed plans on how to boost the creative industry, PMAN said, was handed to the minister during a presentation meeting led by the body’s president, Petty Okafor, on August 5, 2016.<br />
<br />
The body said the proposal contained ideas on how to improve the creative industry and generate over N15 trillion revenue for the government.<br />
<br />
According to PMAN, the recommendations in its proposal were what the government went ahead to implement under the guise of the ‘Creative Industry Financing Conference’.<br />
<br />
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel to PMAN, in a five-page petition, said, “Though the conference was deceptively tagged “creative industry financing conference”, it is our client’s firm belief that the conference was held in full implementation of our client’s original brain child and ideas as clearly highlighted in their respective presentation of 5th August, 2016 and Action Plan of 18th August, 2016, all in the possession of the Ministry of Information and Culture”.<br />
<br />
PMAN gave the minister an ultimatum of 72 hours to desist from continuing with the plans in the proposal or be sued for violation of intellectual property.<br />
<br />
“Our client viewed this action as a grave infringement of their intellectual property rights and dubious conversion of their brain child ideas and concept, originating from painstaking professional study, research and investigation that gulped them over N500,000,” the petition read.</div>

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, on Friday had a closed-door meeting with the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<br />

The meeting came barely 48 hours after Emmanuel joined six other members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to visit ailing President Muhammadu Buhari in London, where he has been receiving medical treatment since May 7.<br />
<br />
Although he did not disclose the subject of his discussion with Osinbajo, the governor told State House correspondents that his interaction with Buhari in London showed that God had answered the prayers of Nigerians.<br />
<br />
He said, “Let me thank God for the life of the President and thank God for Nigerians, too. I also appreciate Nigerians who have prayed sincerely and earnestly for Mr. President and I think God has actually answered the prayers of Nigerians.<br />
<br />
“From the photographs, you could see that God has actually answered our prayers, so some of us were quite excited to see Mr. President. He welcomed us, discussed with us and he was also happy to see us.<br />
<br />
“So, what you are seeing both on television and newspapers are genuine. God has actually healed our President and we thank God for that.”<br />
<br />
When asked what the governors discussed with Buhari, Emmanuel refused to disclose the details.<br />
<br />
He, however, said the discussion was in the interest of the country.<br />
<br />
He said, “I don’t think when you hold a meeting, even with your wife and children, you will come and make that public.<br />
<br />
“The President is the father of the nation and we represent the sub-units of this nation and so, it is not everything that we discussed that we should just come out and say.<br />
<br />
“It was a closed-door meeting, but be assured that whatever the President discussed with the governors was in the best interest of all the citizens of this country.”<br />
<br />
When asked to give an idea of when Buhari would be back in the country, Emmanuel said he could not do so because he was not a doctor.<br />
<br />
He also noted that the President’s return day was not the issue, but the fact that God had healed him.<br />
<br />
The governor said, “I am not a medical doctor. Let me say something here, when you have a father, you will love him and take interest in his well-being.<br />
<br />
“Let me also say, some of us behave as if the President and the governors are supermen. We are human beings, we also have challenges. So let us not think that because we are governors or President, we are supermen.<br />
<br />
“We are not gods, we are mere mortals like any of us here. So, that should also make us play down on the way we look at certain issues.”<br />
<br />
Emmanuel had on Wednesday joined six other state governors — Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi), Umar Ganduje (Kano),  Kashim Shettima (Borno), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) — to visit Buhari at the Abuja House, London.</div>

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has commended the National Assembly for its passage of the bill to reduce the age limits for elective positions.<br />

The governor, however, called for the total removal of age barrier from the eligibility conditions to contest elections in the country.<br />
<br />
He made the call in a statement issued in Ado-Ekiti on Friday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka.<br />
<br />
Fayose said, “If a Nigerian who is 18 years can vote, such a person should also be qualified to be voted for and whether or not such a person can be elected should be left in the hands of the electorate.<br />
<br />
“Most importantly, age is not a barrier to intellectual capability and that has been (seen) in most countries led by young people. Here in Nigeria, General Yakubu Gowon was Head of State at 32.<br />
<br />
“There is no nation that can develop without giving its youths (the) opportunity to serve. There is nothing wrong in a 30-year-old contesting for (the position of the) President not to even talk of (a) 35-year-old because the future of Nigeria belongs to the youth.”<br />
<br />
The governor, who assured that the Ekiti State House of Assembly would endorse the bill when presented to it, called on other state Houses of Assembly to endorse the bill.<br />
<br />
He declared that he was already putting into practice the provisions of the bill in Ekiti State, explaining that it was in recognition of the importance of youth’s involvement in governance that he restricted the age anyone could contest for (the position of a) councillor to between 18 and 40 years and those above 50 years for the chairmanship election.<br />
<br />
“I salute the National Assembly for passing this very important bill that will enable young Nigerians to contest for (the office of the) President at 35, governor at 30 and House of Representatives or State Assemblies at 25. But the National Assembly should have removed the age barrier completely,” the governor said.<br />
<br />
Fayose, who reiterated his decision to enforce the age limit for local government positions, said the bill passed by the National Assembly had reinforced his position on the age limit for local council positions in Ekiti State.<br />
<br />
“It is my position that our youths must be allowed to participate in governance since they are the ones who provide the largest votes during elections.<br />
<br />
“Most importantly, the future belongs to the youth and I believe that they should be given prominent roles in structuring that future which belongs to them.”</div>

Cristiano Ronaldo faces a brutal return to Madrid before starting pre-season training with Real Madrid as he is expected in court on Monday, accused of evading millions in taxes.<br />

The 32-year-old — the world’s highest paid athlete according to Forbes magazine — will be questioned by a court in Pozuelo de Alarcon, a wealthy suburb of Madrid where he lives, over allegations he evaded 14.7 million euros ($17.2 million) in tax.<br />
<br />
The Portuguese star follows in the steps of his arch-rival, Barcelona forward and Argentina star Lionel Messi, who was found guilty of the same offence last year, although the sums involved were smaller.<br />
<br />
Madrid’s public prosecutors accuse Ronaldo of having taken “advantage of a company structure created in 2010 to hide income generated in Spain from his image rights from tax authorities”.<br />
<br />
They say this was a “voluntary and conscious breach of his fiscal obligations in Spain”.<br />
<br />
Prosecutors accuse the four-time world player of the year of evading tax via a shell company based in the British Virgin Islands and another in Ireland, known for low corporate tax rates.<br />
<br />
In addition, they say the Real Madrid striker only declared 11.5 million euros of Spanish-related income from 2011 to 2014, while what he really earned during that time was close to 43 million euros.<br />
<br />
And finally, they accuse him of “voluntarily” refusing to include 28.4 million euros in income linked to the sale of his image rights for the 2015 to 2020 period to a Spanish company.<br />
<br />
Ronaldo has defended himself, saying his “conscience is clear”.<br />
<br />
But the allegations still took their toll, and the man with the “CR7” brand, Real’s all-time top goalscorer, threatened to leave Spain over the affair, giving supporters a fright.<br />
<br />
He has since hinted he will stay on, telling Spanish sports daily Marca that he would like to continue to win trophies for Real.<br />
<br />
Ronaldo is not the only footballer to fall foul of authorities in Spain, which is only just recovering from a damaging economic crisis that saw countless people lose their jobs and inequalities rise.<br />
<br />
Messi was sentenced to a 21-month jail sentence and 2.09-million-euro fine last year for tax fraud.<br />
<br />
His prison sentence has since been replaced by another fine of 252,000 euros, which corresponds to 400 euros for each day of jail.<br />

Barcelona’s Argentine defender Javier Mascherano, meanwhile, agreed a one-year suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud last year.<br />

Brazil star Neymar, another Barcelona forward, and his parents are also due to stand trial for alleged corruption over his transfer from Santos in 2013.<br />

Real have not been spared either.<br />

Apart from Ronaldo, former player Angel di Maria, Portuguese defender Fabio Coentrao and Jose Mourinho, who coached the club from 2009 to 2013, have all been accused of tax fraud.<br />

All are clients of super-agent Jorge Mendes, who was also questioned and put under official investigation last month by a Spanish court investigating alleged tax evasion by Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, another footballer in his stable.<br />
<br />
Mendes defended himself, telling the closed door hearing that he “never” advised players in tax matters.<br />
<br />
Where Ronaldo is concerned, Mendes’s company Gestifute has denied any “fiscal set-up” and said “the player didn’t hide anything”.<br />
<br />
But if he were put on trial and found guilty, Ronaldo risks “a fine of at least 28 million” euros and could potentially be jailed for three-and-a-half years, the Gestha union of experts at Spain’s Inland Revenue has said.<br />
<br />
Since extending his contract last November until 2021, Ronaldo is the highest paid sports star in the world with $93 million (80 million euros) earned in 2016-2017, according to Forbes.</div>

Ahead of the forthcoming non-elective national convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, the Party’s 10-member Constitution Review Committee has submitted its report to the Party’s National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun containing 85 proposals for amendment.<br />

The report was submitted by the Chairman of the Committee and APC National Legal Adviser, Dr. Muiz Banire SAN, accompanied by other committee members, APC National Organising Secretary, Sen. Osita Izunaso and member, House of Representatives, Hon. Asabe Vilita Bashir.<br />

The Chairman of the Party’s Constitution Review Committee said the committee had six working sessions after which a three-day retreat to consider the final report and analysis.<br />
<br />
“In carrying out the assignment, we called for memorandum from members of the Party across board via publication in the newspapers. In addition to memorandum collected, we also wrote letters to the various party organs for their contribution as well as the government to give us their contribution. We received tons of them. Through the assistance of the International Republican Institute IRI we were able to sort them out, analyse them eventually we had of contributions that are worthy of consideration.<br />

“Mr. Chairman, we have contained in Annexure A of our report proposals for amendment totalling 85 for review. It is as a result of several factors – our experience in operating the present constitution, the gaps we have noticed and developments that we also need to capture.” Banire said during the presentation.<br />
<br />
He said major categories amended included: Powers, responsibilities and functions of party organs; composition of organs; disciplinary procedure; definitions, financial management; membership; organizational structure and tenure.<br />
<br />
“We believe that most of the amendments we are recommending if put in place will strengthen our party and enable it to withstand the stress that are capable of being generated from time to time as a result of tension. I must seize the opportunity to commend committee members most of which worked tirelessly. We also thank you Mr. Chairman for the privilege of serving our party in this capacity and we hope and believe that ultimately when these amendments are passed it will give the necessary vigour to our party.” Banire said.<br />

The APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun said the report will be deliberated by the Party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and subsequently the National Executive Committee (NEC) and finally put before the convention for final approval. while thanking the committee members for undertaking the exercise, Odigie-Oyegun said the amendments will amongst others address issues of internal democracy and disciplinary procedures in the Party.<br />

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has told Governor Yahaya Bello, that he has no right to ban any trade union including the Academic Staff Union, ASUU, activities in Kogi State University, KSU.<br />

Governor Bello had fortnight ago proscribed ASUU in the university for allegedly embarking on strike and ignoring entreaties from government to suspend the strike.<br />
<br />
But NLC in a letter to Governor Bello yesterday signed by its National President, Ayuba Wabba said the action of the governor was contrary to the International Labour Organisation, ILO, convention that had recognized freedom of association.<br />
<br />
Wabba said, “Even in the dark days of the military when such obnoxious actions were attempted against the unions, the Juntas had to reverse themselves in compliance with International Conventions and laws of the land.<br />
<br />
“We therefore call on Your Excellency to allow reason and sound judgement to prevail as well as desist from these ill-advised and thoughtless steps that would make the country a laughing stock in the comity of nations.<br />
<br />
“Coupled with this, we are afraid to state that such precipitate actions are capable of exacerbating the already fragile social and industrial relations atmosphere in the state. And although we do not intend a threat, the non-reversal of this abhorrent and repugnant decision will inevitably provoke a serious national action in the state.”<br />
<br />
Wabba who registered the protest of the organised labour against the purported ban of ASUU in in the university as a result of their seven-month strike in protest against unpaid salaries, allowances and pensions, described the governors action as hasty and ill-advised which contradicted all known and extant national and international laws and conventions.<br />
<br />
He said “the Governor has no right to ban a Union. Trade Unions as independent workers organisations are neither under the control of the state government nor registered by it.<br />
<br />
“According to ILO Convention 87 on Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise, which has been duly ratified by the country, workers shall have the right to organise and form trade unions, and “public authorities shall refrain from any interference which would restrict this right or impede the lawful exercise thereof”, and the unions “shall not be liable to be dissolved or suspended by administrative authority.”<br />
<br />
“This Convention is not only reinforced by ILO Convention 98 on the Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining, but buttressed and domesticated by the 1999 Constitution which states unequivocally in Section 40 that every person shall not only be entitled to freely assemble or associate, but in particular, shall “freely form or belong to trade unions and other associations for the protection of his interests”<br />
<br />
“The contravention of these laws by Your Excellency is not only a violation of ILO Conventions and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but an abuse of the fundamental human rights of the lecturers in Kogi State. Your action is also a representation of the height of impunity and high-handedness that has, unfortunately characterized governance in Kogi State since your assumption of office.”<br />
<br />
The letter was copied to the Minister of Labour and Employment and other relevant Government agencies for appropriate action.</div>
