Donald Trump is the luckiest man alive. Unlike almost, well, everyone, he’s been protected from the consequences of his own mistakes his entire life.

Born into a wealthy family, he was insulated from lukewarm academic prospects and serial business crack-ups by his father’s money. (“I often say that I’m a member of the lucky sperm club,” is how he put it in one of his books.) Emerging as a reality-TV star in the early 2000s, Trump discovered that fame allowed him to be as predatory as he pleased without repercussions. (“When you’re a star, they let you do it.”) And his 2016 ascent to the White House opened his eyes to the presidency’s legal armour — which he interpreted broadly and often inaccurately. (“I have an Article II, where I have the right to do whatever I want as president.”)
Although Trump has over the years juggled, among other difficulties, ho-hum grades, the threat of personal bankruptcy, sexual assault accusations, an intensive federal investigation and an impeachment, he has plowed ahead relatively unwounded and unencumbered by regret. Wealth, celebrity and the presidency have kept him buoyant. All that insulation has also meant that he hasn’t learned from his mistakes. Every personal and public reckoning has been postponed or shunted aside.
Now, however, Trump is staring at two threats that loom after he leaves the White House in January. One is financial, the other legal. Neither is entirely under his control. And both may help explain, along with his perennial inability to accept losing, why Trump won’t acknowledge that President-elect Joe Biden is going to succeed him and why he has enlisted the Republican Party to help him gaslight Americans about the outcome of the presidential election.
Trump and the patchwork of businesses he houses inside the Trump Organization are saddled with more than $1 billion in debt, which Dan Alexander of Forbes has helpfully tallied. A portion of that total has been divulged over the past few years in the president’s personal financial disclosures, on file with the Office of Government Ethics. The New York Times recently revealed that Trump has personally guaranteed at least $421 million of the debt, with more than $300 million coming due within four years.
In other words, Trump is on the hook for a lot of money that he may have to scramble to repay in a Covid-19-battered economy in which his industries — hotels, leisure, urban real estate — have been particularly pummelled. Forbes estimates his assets are worth $3.7 billion; Bloomberg News pegs them at about $3.2 billion. He’s not going broke. But if the economy continues to struggle in coming months, those valuations will be tested. And much of what Trump holds isn’t liquid, meaning he may be hard-pressed to sell assets quickly if he needs to raise funds. Among Trump’s most valuable holdings, for example, are minority stakes in two properties controlled by Vornado Realty Trust. Rumours of fire sales might further depress the value of his portfolio.
Another thing that would weaken Trump’s ability to negotiate sweetheart financial deals or forgiveness: leaving the presidency.
 
On the legal side of the ledger, Trump, his children and their company face aggressive investigations into their finances, accounting practices and tax payments.
 
The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is investigating Trump for possible tax fraud and falsification of business records, according to appellate court filings. In this probe, which is also examining the president’s payment of hush money to two women who allegedly had sexual encounters with him, the DA’s office is seeking eight years of Trump’s tax returns. It is also taking a look at whether Trump inflated the value of his properties and other assets in order to secure funds from lenders and investors.
 
New York Attorney General Letitia James has launched another investigation, also focused on whether the Trump Organization and the Trump family manipulated valuations to secure funding or engineer tax benefits. James’s probe is a civil case, which could bring hefty financial penalties against Trump but no prison time (unless she finds reasons to recast it as criminal case). Vance’s investigation is a criminal matter, however, and if the Trump crew is found guilty of felonies, prison time is on the table.
 
Trump’s team has fought back hard against the Vance investigation, including arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court that a sitting president is immune from state criminal prosecutions. While the court rejected that notion in a landmark ruling over the summer, it would become a moot argument in any venue once Trump is no longer president.
 
A Trump pushed outside the legal moat that surrounds the White House becomes, for the most part, a Trump who can be sued and penalized just as any other American can. That could also give fresh traction to the sexual assault cases against him.
 
It’s unclear how aggressive law enforcement officials in the Biden administration will be toward Trump. They could resurrect some of the obstruction charges that have gone fallow since former Special Counsel Robert Mueller ended his probe. On the other hand, the political firestorm that could ignite might persuade Biden to hold back.

Thousands of Donald Trump supporters rallied in Washington on Saturday, with the president making a drive-past in his motorcade as he sticks to discredited claims that mass fraud denied him election victory.
Marchers close to the White House greeted Trump’s brief appearance with wild cheers, waving and whistles, holding signs and flags saying “Best prez ever,” “Stop the steal” and “Trump 2020: Keep America Great.”
Several thousand people had gathered by noon on the city’s Freedom Plaza, with more still arriving from all sides, waving flags and shouting “Four More Years” in a festive atmosphere reminiscent of a Trump rally.
With right-wing militia group the Proud Boys also among those rallying, a large security presence was deployed in the capital to prevent clashes with anti-Trump events scheduled outside the Supreme Court.

The latest tallies gave Trump’s Democratic challenger Joe Biden a solid final win in the state-by-state Electoral College that decides the presidency, with 306 votes against Trump’s 232. Two hundred seventy votes are required for election.
But Margarita Urtubey, 49, a horse breeder who flew in from Miami with her sister, told AFP the election was “so corrupt,” adding “Trump won by a landslide. We are here to march for the ‘stop the steal’ of this election, to make our voice heard.”
Darion Schaublin, who drove from Columbus, Ohio, came to protest the fact “the whole system’s rigged… in the way that the information is getting to the people.”
“The truth never actually gets out,” said the 26-year-old, who says he lost his job in a restaurant after refusing to wear a mask as protection from Covid-19.
Schaublin estimated there was a “95 percent” chance Trump would not have a second term — “and I’m not sure of the legitimacy of that.”
The final two undeclared states were called on Friday by US television networks — with Biden winning the former Republican stronghold of Georgia in a close race, and Trump winning North Carolina.
President Trump continues to impede Biden’s ability to prepare for his transition ahead of inauguration on January 20 and has filed numerous lawsuits — unsuccessfully — to challenge vote counts around the country.
On Friday, a judge in Michigan issued another rejection of Republican claims of fraud.
Trump said Friday that “time will tell” if he remains president, in a momentary slip of his unprecedented refusal to concede his election defeat.
Trump broke his silence after a week without on-camera comments, speaking at a Rose Garden event to herald the imminent authorization of a coronavirus vaccine.
During a short speech about the vaccine work, Trump insisted that he would never again call for a lockdown to curb the virus’ spread.
Then he added, “Whatever happens in the future, who knows which administration it will be, I guess time will tell.”
The hint of doubt came despite him continuing to claim that mass fraud — for which no evidence has been produced — robbed him of victory in the November 3 election.
Despite his own intelligence officials’ declaration Thursday that the election was “the most secure in American history,” Trump and his right-wing media allies show no sign of giving up their quest to get the results overturned.
“President Trump believes he will be President Trump, have a second term,” spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said on Fox News.
After driving past demonstrators in Washington, Trump headed Saturday to his golf club outside the capital on his regular weekend routine.
Half a dozen supporters stood at one side of the entrance with Trump flags, and about the same number stood on the opposite side with a big “Biden Harris” sign and one that said: “We voted. You’re fired.”
Biden is steadily preparing for power, with many world leaders congratulating him on his victory.
China was the latest nation on board, with a foreign ministry spokesman saying, “We express our congratulations.”

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick on Friday broke down in tears after the national team’s 4-4 draw with Sierra Leone in a 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The Super Eagles went four goals up in the first half, but ended up drawing 4-4 with the visiting team.
Pinnick, speaking with the team in their dressing room after the game, said the draw was the worst result under his tenure.
“It’s football, definitely, it’s football, it can go either way, but what happened to us? Were we complacent? Were we just so comfortable that we were leading 4-0 and all of a sudden, the goals started coming in?

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has welcomed the new dates slated for the Lagos East Senatorial and Kosofe Constituency II by-elections.
Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Friday announced that all the pending by-elections in some States across Nigeria would be conducted on Saturday, December 5, 2020
Reacting, the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo told newsmen that with the new date, the party would energise its campaign machinery to ensure victory for APC candidates, NAN reports.
“We are happy as a party, if not for the set back of the End SARS protests that necessitated the postponement, we would have put the by-elections behind us.

“So, we are happy now that we have a new date.
“We are going to re-energise our campaign machinery to sensitise the people, the party members and the electorate to come out en masse and vote for our respective candidates.
“So, we are quite happy about it and we are very much confident that we will win the elections,” the APC spokesman said.
He, however, urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work harder on voter education and creating the atmosphere for peaceful and credible elections.
“The umpire should continue to stay neutral and make sure everything necessary is put in place for free, fair and credible elections with the collaboration of all stakeholders and security agencies.
“We want to encourage the people to come out en masse to exercise their franchise so that they can elect the senator of their choice for Lagos East Senatorial District and Kosofe State Constituency II Lagos House of Assembly election,” he added.

Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has warned the rank and file of the Nigeria Police and the army not to return to their duty post again.
Recall that a former Inspector General of Police, IGP Tafa Balogun, had appealed to men of the Nigeria Police Force, to return to duty, following the reported killing and razing of police stations and subsequent abscondment of many officers during the End SARS protests.
Hoodlums had attacked police stations, killing some officers, looted and destroyed their belongings during the crisis that resulted from the nationwide protests.
However, Balogun had urged the officers to ignore the attacks they suffered and return to their stations.

But reacting to the ex-IGP’s appeal to the officers, Nnamdi Kanu advised policemen and women, especially those from the South and middle belt, to resign and burn their uniforms.
Kanu, in a Facebook post, outlined four reasons why the officers both in the army and the police should abandon their services to Nigeria.
“It seems men and women of the Nigerian Police have started the process of acquiring some common sense at last,” he wrote.
“My advice to them as with those serving in the Nigerian army, especially those from the Middle Belt and South, is as follows:
“Resign from the Nigerian Police with immediate effect as most are now doing in the army. Burn your uniform and join the revolution.
“Prepare to lead the upcoming revolution in your area because the same Nigerian youths in the Middle Belt and South your Fulani commander wants you to KILL are the only people honestly fighting for a better future for you and your children.
“Fulani controlled security apparatus in Nigeria is using you to kill your own people while they groom and tolerate terrorists in their own terror ravaged north. They see you as a fool. You kill your own youths only for Fulani to come and take over your village with their terrorism.
“Why is it that your fellow Fulani police officers do not kill their own young people in the core Arewa Sharia North despite the preponderance of terrorism in Arewa core north? Think! This is the height of idiocy, say no to the death of your own youths, reject Nigeria police today.
“Another reason why you must not go back to work is this; the same Fulani terrorists and bandits that kill you will earn more than 5 times your salary courtesy of their fellow Fulani who are in control of Aso Rock.
“Nigeria is the only country in the world where the government pays killers and terrorists more than their own police. Use your brain for once and stop doing the bidding of Fulani terrorists in Aso Rock.”

Seven alleged victims of the October 20 Lekki shootings have ‘surfaced’ at the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Enquiry and Restitution for Victims of SARS related abuses and other matters.
Their lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika SAN, told the panel he had a petition on their behalf against the Nigerian Army.

After a week’s break, the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry probing the alleged shooting of #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate on October 20 resumed sitting on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the two youth panel members, Rinu Oduala and Temitope Majekodunmi, who abstained last week in protest against the freezing of bank accounts of #EndSARS promoters by the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) have now joined the panel.
The retired Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel had adjourned on November 7 when its proceedings were frustrated over the inability to form quorum due to the boycott of the sitting by the two youth panel members
The panel fixed Saturday for the Nigerian Army to return to give its testimony.
The Nigerian Army has listed three Brigadier Generals and one Lieutenant Colonel, who will testify before the panel
The top military officers, whose statements on oath have already been submitted to the panel are the Commander of 81 Military Intelligence Brigade, Victoria Island, Lagos, Brig. Gen. Ahmed Taiwo; Chief of Staff, 81 Division, Nigerian Army, VI, Lagos, Brig. Gen. Nsikak Edet; Commander, 81 Division Garrison, VI, Brig. Gen. Francis Omata; Commander, 9 Brigade, Ikeja, Brig. Gen. Musa Etsu-Ndagi; and Commanding Officer, 65 Battalion, Bonny Camp, VI, Lt. Col. Salisu Bello.
Military and legal teams already seated and proceedings are underway.

A coalition of Nigerian-American organisations in the U.S. has pledged its support to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris.
The pledge was conveyed in a congratulatory message by the Organisation for the Advancement of Nigerians on behalf of 18 other professionals, religious and socio-cultural bodies.
“On behalf of Nigerian-American communities in the United States, please accept our warm congratulations on your victories in this historic election.
“We are confident that under your leadership and guidance, the soul of this great nation will return to what the founding fathers envisioned.

The coalition expressed optimism that a Biden-Harris administration would rise to the occasion, while also making life better for all Americans in an atmosphere of peace, equity and justice.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has expressed optimism that the prolonged strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities will be resolved by next week when the Federal Government team meets the union leaders again.
He, however, said if the matter was not resolved by then, he would explore the provisions in the labour law and other channels.
Government had previously appealed to the union to call off the strike.
The union had on March 24 2020 embarked on an indefinite strike over the failure of the Federal Government to keep to the 2019 Memorandum of Action between them as well as the lingering disagreement over the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System that ASUU rejected.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Friday, the minister said the government had met six of the union’s nine demands and that they would meet again next week with the hope of ending the prolonged strike.
He stated, “Even if countries go to war, at the end of the day they come to the negotiation table. I’m inviting them (ASUU) next week. We are doing side meetings on our part and we are collating everything. I’m collating responses from the Accountant General of the Federation’s Office and everybody who has something to do with this matter.
When asked if it meant that the lecturers may not return to the classrooms in the next one or two weeks, he said, “I’m not looking at that (long) period. I’m an optimist on this matter. By next week, we will conclude this matter. There are so many options left. We have the labour laws and I have options left to me in the labour laws. I have other channels.”
The minister, who said his children had also been at home as a result of the strike, explained that government had agreed to give the University Transparency Academic Solution, the payment platform proposed by ASUU, a trial. He however said the feedback he got from the National Information Technology Development Agency, the agency mandated to follow-up the trial with ASUU, showed they had just concluded the first phase and that the second phase to assess the functional requirement of UTAS had not been done.
He added, “UTAS has yet to be ready but government will not discourage them. And we have told them there is no need using the same old method of strike to make demands since such had been deployed since 2017.”
On the revitalisation fund, he said government had agreed to release N30bn out of the N40bn demanded by the union as the payment for November 2019 and September 2020, adding that the remaining N10bn would be staggered.
“A committee that looked into the Needs Assessment of universities held a workshop on how funds could be generated came up with the recommendation that other things could be done to raise funds, because revitalisation cannot be done through the budget, especially when the country is running a deficit budget,” Ngige added.

Senator Rand Paul has replied those condemning President Donald Trump for his decision to pull out United States troops from Afghanistan.
The Pentagon is set to reduce troop level to 4,500 by the end of November.
Robert O’Brien, National Security Adviser said the number should drop to 2,500 by January 2021, and zero in May.
But Trump wants all the soldiers back home this Christmas.

Politico quoted current and former administration officials as saying he fired Defense Secretary Mark Esper for opposing troop ‘drawdowns’.
Critics say the plan to expedite withdrawals would set up a clash with top generals and civilians.
They argue that leaving Afghanistan while the security situation remains volatile is risky.
There are also fears that it will complicate Joe Biden’s promise to leave a small number of troops there to guard against terror attacks.
In his reaction, the Senator for Kentucky said if Trump issues the order, security chiefs must comply.
“Reminder to those saying withdrawing troops may cause a “clash” with Generals/Pentagon: there is only one Commander in Chief, it is ⁦⁦⁦⁦@realDonaldTrump⁩ and when he orders the troops out of Afghanistan, the only proper answer is “Yes sir,” Rand Paul tweeted.
Marc Polymeropoulos, a retired CIA senior officer, protested that the President’s resolution was not advocated by military, political or intelligence leadership.
He warned that the decision based, “on an old campaign promise by President Trump now carried out by hyperpartisan Trump loyalists installed in a last-minute purge of DoD (Department of Defense) is both reckless and will not make America safer”.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria were held to a 4-4 draw by Sierra Leone in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday, after going 4-0 up in the first half.
Alex Iwobi opened scoring at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, before Victor Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s advantage with a one-time finish.
Iwobi grabbed his brace from long range and Samuel Chukuweze dribbled his way past a couple of challenges to slot home.
However, the visitors made it 4-1 through Kwame Quee.

In the final 28 minutes of the game, Al-Hadji Kamara scored a brace and Mustapha Bundu also got on the scoresheet, as Sierra Leone grabbed a shock result.
Gernot Rohr’s men remain top of Group L with 7 points, while Benin are second with three points.
What did we learn from this eight-goal thriller?
1. Rohr’s bad in-game management: I don’t know what the German tactician told his team during the break when it was 4-1. But as soon as it was 4-2, Rohr should have seen the game running away from the Super Eagles and taken decisive action. Either by changing personnel or his shape/system. This shambles further adds armoury to those of us who are not tickled by the former Bordeaux man.
2. Don’t bring back Musa, Onuachu: Ahmed Musa, who is now without a club, was totally ineffective for the hour or so he played. His role was unclear at times and he added nothing. The former Leicester City winger’s time with the national team might just be over. Onuachu came on in the second half and also offered zilch. One wonders if there are no decent Nigerian strikers out there better than him.
3. Osimhen a big miss in Freetown: While contesting for a pass in the penalty box, Osimhen fell awkwardly and injured his wrist. The Napoli striker was wheeled away by a pitch ambulance and he is now a doubt for the reverse fixture in Freetown. One wonders if Rohr will stick with Onuachu or give Iheanacho to lead the attack.
4. Brave Leone Stars: Credit must be given to the Leone Stars for smelling blood and going all out for it. Going into the break a 4-1 must have breathed new energy into the team, but as soon as they made it 4-2, they conducted waves after waves of attack as Nigeria panicked. And they were duly rewarded.
5. Bad pitch, worse NTA: Not blaming the Samuel Ogbemudia pitch (not as if there are better options all over the country), but it was difficult to play good football. The painful viewing was made worse by the terrible camera angles of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA). We have a long way to go, if we desire to make local football a big thing.

Nigeria has recorded 156 new cases of the dreaded coronavirus.
The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC), made this known via its official Twitter account, stating that so far, a total number of 64,884 confirmed cases have been reported in the country.
The health agency said 146 coronavirus patients have recovered from the disease and discharged from isolation centres across the country in the past 24 hours.
It said one coronavirus-related death was recorded within the same period.

The NCDC stated that Lagos recorded 70 new cases, while FCT recorded 22 cases and Kaduna 18 cases.
Also, Rivers had 15, Plateau 11, Ogun 10, Bauchi and Katsina had three each. Kano had two while Ekiti and Osun had one each.
The NCDC said of the 64,884 patients infected with the virus, 60,936 cases have been discharged with 1,163 deaths recorded.

The Presidential Task Force, PTF, on COVID-19 has appealed to Nigerians abroad to suspend plans of coming home for the Christmas festivities.
Dr Sani Aliyu, the National Coordinator of the task force, made this known during the weekly media briefing of the task force on Friday.
According to him, this was one of the safety measures to prevent the second wave spread of the virus in the country.
“We know that we are going into the Christmas period and we are looking at steps to minimize the number of people we see during this period.

“If you do not need to travel, remain in the country during the period.
“If you are outside the country, now is not the time to start coming in on holiday.
“If you do have to come into the country on holiday, be aware that you have to do the mandatory seven days isolation and you have to be tested and confirmed to be negative.

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, has disclosed plans to scrap payment of pension to former governors and their deputies in the state.
Abdulrazaq disclosed his plans in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, on Friday.
He disclosed that a bill would be sent to the State House of Assembly next week, asking lawmakers to scrap the law awarding pension packages to ex-governors.
The governor explained that the decision was in line with the call by residents of the state.

The statement reads: “The governor has listened to voices of the majority of the citizens opposing the pension law for former governors and deputy governors.
“However, the governor feels it is time for the law as it is to give way. He would rather the state commits the scarce public funds to tackling the question of poverty and youth unemployment.”
This is coming barely three days after his counterpart from Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu took a similar step.

The recruitment of 400 members of the Civilian Joint Task Force in Borno State into the Nigerian Army has pitted prominent socio-cultural groups representing different regions of the country against one another on the proprietary or otherwise of the move.
While the Arewa Consultative Forum is fully in support of the decision, groups such as Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Afenifere, the Middle Belt Forum and the Pan Niger Delta Forum are against it on the premise that only persons from a particular area of the country are recruited into the Army.
The Nigerian Army had on Wednesday absorbed 400 members of the civilian JTF into its fold to assist in prosecuting the war against Boko Haram terrorists.
The men, among who are hunters, are being enlisted into the Nigerian Army’s supper camp strategy in Borno State, the worst hit by the insurgency.

Governor Babagana Zulum, who commissioned the 400 men in the presence of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, said they formed the first batch to be recruited by the Army.
According to him, other CJTF members will be joining the Army soon.
The CJTF emerged in 2013 to support the security forces in the fight against Boko Haram and to protect local communities from attacks by insurgents and was formalised by the Borno State Government through a collaboration with the military.
The CJTF members were recruited, trained, kitted, deployed and paid monthly allowances to motivate them.

An International Organisation, Dollar Club Exclusive, has raised the alarm over the lingering crisis between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and the Federal Government which has stalled academic activities in Nigerian Universities.
The association added that the strike which has lasted for about seven months has made students to forget what they were taught since they have been at home doing nothing all these while.
The Chairman of Dollar Club Exclusive and former NMA President, Dr.Jerry Oguzie stated this on Thursday in Uyo, during a press conference in honour of the association’s grand commander, Late Justice Ime Umana.
Dr. Oguzie, however, called on the Federal Government to quickly address the issue so that students would go back to school.

According to him, “we are perturbed that ASUU has been on strike since the past six months. We are perturbed that our children are no longer in school. We are worried that our children are losing what they know. The FG should address the issue and stop playing politics with the lives of our children.
“It’s only in Nigeria that one will know when he enters the university without knowing when he will graduate. A course that is supposed to run for four or six years would run for six to ten years due to persistent strike actions. And it’s high time government addressed this issue once and for all.
“Then the question should be, how much is even needed to sort ASUU out? You can imagine how much that has been spent on frivolities in this country. We read recently how dollars stacked in one room, rotten, was discovered in one part of this country, so what are we talking about?
On why ASUU has refused to shift grounds and register with the IPPIS as directed by the FG, Dr. Oguzie said it is only ASUU that is in the position to know what is good for their members stressing that IPPIS would not save the country from the purported corruption.
He, however, decried the poor funding in the education sector, adding that health sector in the country suffers same fate.
“I am a medical doctor, and no one can speak better of health issue than health practitioners, same is with ASUU, no one can speak better of institutions than them.
ASUU knows what it wants and not for the federal government to tell them go left or go right, they know what they are asking for and Federal Government should listen to them.
”But think of it, has IPPIS saved us from the monumental corruption in the country? I expect the federal government to say, okay, give us one to five years or there about to pay, but for the FG to stick on the ground and say move before we move, is unacceptable. They should come to a negotiating table and resolve the issue, we are not happy as a group.” The Chairman noted.
