Samson Ayokunle, the Christian body noted that Nigeria was “smuggled into OIC during the military”, and wondered if the President would be ready to attend the meeting of the World Council of Churches or ask the Vice President to represent him whenever the members meet.<br /> <br /> CAN said, “With all the cries we have made about the unconstitutionality of Nigeria’s membership of OIC, going for such conference was still the first assignment of President Buhari after being sworn in. Are the government officials listening to those who voted them into power at all? Is the government not heating up the polity? We wonder if the President is ready to attend the meeting of the World Council of Churches or be asking the Vice President to represent him whenever the members meet.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “As President Buhari begins another term, we appeal to him to have a blueprint for the security challenges facing the country. He should avoid lopsided appointments in every facet of the government, especially, the appointment chief security officers. The security councils and other agencies of the government must not be dominated by people who share the same faith and ethnicity with him. The preponderance of the Fulani people at the corridors of power is what Chief Olusegun Obasanjo refers to as fulanisation agenda.<br /> <br /> “We have many states in the North where churches are being denied of Certificates of Occupancy. This is a ploy to allow excuses to be given later for these churches to be pulled down whenever religious fanatics are in government in those states. We have two centres here and you see the orderly way people are being screened for accreditation.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “What you see here is ongoing in about 94 centres in 22 states across the federation.<br /> <br /> “This is another way the corporation is showing transparency in carrying out its activities and this has also given Nigerians the opportunity to hold their leaders accountable.<br /> <br /> “All the candidates are scheduled with time. Some 8 AM, some 9 AM and the questions are not the same because they are computer generated,” he said.<br /> <br /> He said that the corporation in collaboration with some institutions worked together to ensure the success of the programme.<br /> <br /> We observed that at the various centres while some had finished the test, others were waiting and some were being accredited.<br /> <br /> Some of the candidates who spoke to our correspondent said that the process had been transparent so far.<br /> <br /> Mr Nkwouh Charles, a candidate at Sanscon International School center in Maitama said: “The process was smooth, we were identified and given accreditation. There was no confusion here and they started in good time.<br /> <br /> “I wrote for the graduate category and I am just coming out from the exam hall. I am very hopeful,” he said.<br /> <br /> Mr Abraham Joshua, at JC Best International School centre Life camp, said that apart from not starting in good time, accreditation was fast and okay.<br /> <br /> “I commended the NNPC for this, this is the first time I have been invited for an interview since I have been applying for jobs.<br /> <br /> “I do not know anybody but shortlisting me in the first place gave me hope that this process will work.<br /> <br /> “I believe that since I have gotten to this stage that I will be successful. I am very hopeful,” he added.<br /> <br /> But Mr Tunji Ade at the same centre who was supposed to write at 10 AM but as at 11.30am had not gotten accreditation frowned at the delay.<br /> <br /> “Nobody had told us anything but I learnt that they did not start early here.<br /> <br /> “I will wait until it is my turn but I am not happy with the delay in time,” he said.<br /> <br /> Armed security personnel were present at the various centres visited within the FCT.

I couldn’t watch television, listen to radio or play around with friends. I was just there washing, cleaning and sweeping. I became a houseboy at the age of 12 due to crippling poverty, he said.<br /> <br /> On how he started music, Godfrey said his music voyage started in a Lagos church located in Oshodi<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “One day, when I was very hungry, I just barged into a church at Oshodi and told them I could handle their music and make it different. They did not answer me the first time, so I began to attend their rehearsals, and the third time they gave me a chance. Because I play five musical instruments including bass guitar, lead guitar and piano, I just mesmerised them; they were shocked! That was how they employed me and I remember my first salary was N3,000. I was very excited because I was hungry and broke. People don’t know all these stories. They think I just popped out of the blue and stumbled into success. And so, I was like ‘if one church can pay me N3,000, why not try another church and make N6,000?’ I started focusing more on music, that was how I got many churches to employ me and I was making N9,000 a month, before another church invited me and paid me N10,000 per month.<br /> <br /> “I was working my life out everyday. I was doing vigil after vigil. I did not even want to be an artiste, I just wanted to be a music director, train people vocally and stuff, but later, everything just changed. He was said to have taken a poisonous substance suspected to be Sniper.<br /> <br /> Moments before he committed suicide, Mayowa posted a video on Facebook, explaining why he took the decision.<br /> <br /> In the three-minute-18-second video, Mayowa bemoaned how his lover, one Bolaji Temmy, whom he had dated for nine years, ended the relationship after she commenced her National Youth Service Corps programme.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Amid sobs, Mayowa, who identified himself as the president of his department’s students’ association, lamented that he had made several efforts to reconcile with his estranged lover, but to no avail.<br /> <br /> He said in the video, “I will advise the Federal Government to scrap NYSC because that is where I lost my joy; my love. I am not a bad boy; I am not wicked. Since my woman got into that (NYSC) camp, everything changed. Since last year, we’ve not been able to resolve anything. My woman is now taking an advantage of the mistake I made three years ago to leave me.<br /> <br /> “I am going, I need to go, Bolaji Temmy is the woman I’m talking about. I need to go. To all the boys out there, please try to make money before you date any woman. I’ve tried my best. I’ve tried all I could. We’ve been dating for nine years and now she is leaving. I hurt her in the past, but I’ve appealed to her. But she insisted on leaving me.”<br /> <br /> He appealed to his mother and colleagues to take heart, noting that he had chosen his own path.<br /> <br /> “I will miss my mum. Mummy, please don’t cry. I have chosen my own path…I will miss you all. Your president is going…I am going. I am going now. I am empty. Bye,” he concluded.<br /> <br /> The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, said the Shagamu Road Police Station, Ikorodu, received a distress call on the suicide around 5.30am.<br /> <br /> He said when interrogated by the police, the girlfriend said Mayowa was fond of beating her and that they were together shortly before he took the poison.<br /> <br /> Elkana said, “The police received information that a 34-year-old part-time student at Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu, drank a poisonous chemical identified as Sniper, following a misunderstanding between him and his girlfriend, Olokodana Bolaji, 24, who was also a graduate of the same institution.<br /> <br /> “He was rushed to hospital by his neighbours following an alarm raised by his girlfriend, but eventually died. In the statement of his girlfriend, she told police investigators that she and the deceased dated for nine years and that the deceased was fond of beating her.<br /> <br /> “She said while she was with the deceased in his room, they had a quarrel and he, as usual, resorted to physical violence. She said she ran to the rest room and upon her return, she found him gasping for breath with an empty bottle of Sniper beside him.”<br /> <br /> The PPRO stated that detectives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, visited the scene of the incident, adding that the corpse had been deposited at the Ikorodu General Hospital mortuary for autopsy.<br /> <br /> “Investigation is ongoing to determine whether it was actually a suicide case or murder,” Elkana added.

The Commission further engaged Deloitte & Touche to conduct a forensic audit of the activities of Oando Plc.<br /> <br /> “The general public is hereby notified of the conclusion of the investigations of Oando Plc.<br /> <br /> “The findings from the report revealed serious infractions such as false disclosures, market abuses, misstatements in financial statements, internal control failures, and corporate governance lapses stemming from poor Board oversight, irregular approval of directors’ remuneration, unjustified disbursements to directors and management of the company, related party transactions not conducted at arm’s length, among others.”<br /> <br /> The Commission also directed the payment of monetary penalties by the company and affected individuals and directors, and refund of improperly disbursed remuneration by the affected Board members to the company.<br /> <br /> It said as required under Section 304 of the Investments and Securities Act (ISA) 2007, it would refer all issues with possible criminality to the appropriate criminal prosecuting authorities.<br /> <br /> SEC stated that other aspects of the findings would be referred to the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Federal Inland Revenue Service, and the Corporate Affairs Commission.<br /> <br /> The apex capital market regulator said, “The Commission is confident that with the implementation of the above directives and introduction of some remedial measures, such unwholesome practices by public companies would be significantly reduced.<br /> <br /> “Therefore, in line with the Federal Government’s resolve to build strong institutions, boards of public companies are enjoined to properly perform their fiduciary duties as required under extant securities laws.”<br /> <br /> According to the statement, the Commission maintains its zero tolerance to market infractions, and reiterates its commitment to ensuring the fairness, integrity, efficiency and transparency of the securities market, thereby strengthening investor protection.

I think it’s something we need to tackle immediately.”<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Sanwo-Olu, who signed the order in the presence of security chiefs and the heads of relevant agencies in the state, said the support and cooperation of military personnel could not be overemphasised in the implementation of the order.<br /> <br /> “Lagosians are not going to wait for us any longer to maintain orderliness on our roads, hence, I have invited all the security chiefs to witness the signing of the executive order so that they can hear us and support us in this regard.<br /> <br /> “We want to ensure that we control traffic until everybody gets home safely. LASTMA should, therefore, extend its working hours and ensure traffic control till 11pm,” he said.<br /> <br /> Sanwo-Olu also charged LASTMA to effectively carry out their functions by ensuring strict compliance with all extant traffic rules and regulations as prescribed in the enabling law, adding that another pronouncement would soon be made to address the issue of one-way driving on Lagos roads.<br /> <br /> He directed the Office of Drainage Services in the Ministry of the Environment to commence aggressive cleaning of all secondary and tertiary drainage systems across the state to ensure the free flow of rainwater during the rainy season.<br /> <br /> According to the governor, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps has been directed to address environmental issues in the executive order by not necessarily arresting the people but engaging them in effective communication on the need to ensure compliance with environmental laws.<br /> <br /> “Environmental offenders are not meant to be arrested, but communicate with them; the one that we need to reprimand, let us reprimand, the ones we need to advise, let us advise. The people that need to be reformed, reform them,” he said.<br /> <br /> Sanwo-Olu directed the Vehicle Inspection Service to be more communicative and advisory on issues of bad vehicle wipers, spare tyres and non-provision of jacks in vehicles, among others.

They advised Nigerians to prepare for another disastrous four years, which Buhari started on May 29.<br /> <br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> The Economist in its report said based on the thinking of the International Monetary Fund, the average income of Nigerians “will not rise for at least another six (years).”<br /> <br /> The report partly read, “The Nigerian economy is stuck like a stranded truck. Average incomes have been falling for four years; the IMF thinks they will not rise for at least another six (years).<br /> <br /> “The latest figures put unemployment at 23 per cent, after growing for 15 consecutive quarters.<br /> <br /> “Some 94 million people live on less than $1.90 a day, more than in any other country, and the number is swelling.<br /> <br /> “By 2030, a quarter of very poor people will be Nigerians, predicts the World Data Lab, which counts such things.”<br /> <br /> The report said the naira was overvalued, adding that this was because the government had spent decades neglecting basic public goods such as roads, schools and electricity.<br /> <br /> It said, “Where urgency is needed, Mr Buhari offers only caution. Few are holding their breath for any more drive in his second term, which began on May 29th.<br /> <br /> “Yet officials are postponing a crisis, not averting one. Consider borrowing. The debt-to-GDP ratio is 28 per cent, but Nigeria collects so little in tax that interest payments swallow about 60 per cent of federal revenues.”<br /> <br /> The Economist said that public finances would be healthier if the government raised the price of fuel, which is imported by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation and sold on at a loss.<br /> <br /> It said last year, subsidy was worth at least 0.5 per cent of the GDP, noting that this was almost what the government spent on health care.<br /> <br /> “Politicians are scared to end the subsidy. An attempt to do so in 2012 led to massive protests.<br /> <br /> “Although the government has expanded the school-feeding programme and is working on a safety net for the poor, most citizens get few benefits from the state,” it added.<br /> <br /> For Nigeria to prosper, it said the government should harness the potential of its 200 million citizens.<br /> <br /> It said currently, the citizens were ignored except when politicians needed votes.<br /> <b><br /></b><b>Report confirms President’s cluelessness, say PDP, ADC, SDP</b><br /> <br /> In its reaction, the PDP warned Nigerians to be prayerful, saying the second tenure of Buhari would be disastrous for the country.<br /> <br /> It said that the aspirations of Nigerians would not be met under the leadership of the President.<br /> <br /> The National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, said the report by the foreign magazine was a mere confirmation of what Nigerians knew and had been passing through.<br /> <br /> “We all know the millions of people whose jobs had been lost; we also know that retirees are not paid while workers are praying daily to get paid for jobs they have done.<br /> <br /> “We do not need any prophet to tell us that the last four years had been traumatic for Nigerians. But the sad thing is that, there is nothing on the ground to show that the next four years under the President will not be worse. It will be disastrous, especially when nothing is being done to secure the country and its people,” Secondus said.<br /> <br /> Also, the African Democratic Congress and the Social Democratic Party agreed with the PDP that the report by The Economist only confirmed the position of opposition members that the present administration had no clue on how to manage the nation’s economy.<br /> <br /> The ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Yemi Kolapo; and her counterpart in the SDP, Alfa Mohammed, said this in separate interviews with one of our correspondents on Thursday.<br /> <br /> Kolapo on her part claimed that the present government came into power unprepared.<br /> <br /> She said, “It should not really take The Economist of this world to tell Nigerians that the economy was so poorly handled under the All Progressives Congress government.<br /> <br /> “The sad reality is that those who should know in the APC government have chosen to politicise everything at the expense of Nigeria and Nigerians. Look at all the economic indices there are to watch, they are all sloping downwards. This government came into power unprepared.<br /> <br /> “Even if we excuse that, the fact that they have shown cluelessness in 80 per cent of economic affairs, and know-how in only about 20 per cent should signal to them that they need to hand over the baton to those who know how to turn the economy around and also genuinely fight corruption.<br /> <br /> “Nigerians made their choice by voting against President Buhari and the APC, but they have chosen to continue to inflict pain on the poor masses by sitting tight fraudulently. God will surely deliver His children.”<br /> <br /> Mohammed, on his part, agreed with Kolapo that the magazine stated the obvious.<br /> <br /> He said there was no way there would not be poverty in a country where there was insecurity and government policies were not favourable to investors.<br /> <br /> He said, “The Economist is only stating the obvious. Every Nigerian knows that in the last four years, Nigerians have continued to be poorer.<br /> <br /> “It is obvious for everybody to see. The genesis of the poverty the magazine talked about is known to all of us. Where there is insecurity and the people cannot carry out their business freely, there will be poverty.<br /> <br /> “Where big businessmen who have the capacity to create jobs and employ people are being humiliated by the EFCC, there will be poverty. When you don’t create enabling environment for investment, there will be poverty.<br /> <br /> “People now take their money outside Nigeria to invest, therefore, making those who are unemployed here to remain unemployed while providing jobs abroad.<br /> <br /> “We in the opposition have been saying it that the policies of this government have been killing investors.<br /> <br /> “Nigerians had the opportunity to make a change during the last elections, but unfortunately, they did not do that, just because of sentiments.”

Imam Abubakar has demonstrated one of the most courageous acts any man can possibly do by risking his life for those who are not people of his own tribe.”<br /> <br /> A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Mr Laolu Akande, quoted Osinbajo as saying that Nigeria would be a lot better if people would truly love one another and not on the basis of tribe, religion or ethnicity.<br /> <br /> “When people have been wronged, it is always easier for people to accept that revenge or vengeance is the right approach. But as you know, vengeance breeds bitterness and hatred and doesn’t solve the problems created, but causes more deaths and harm.”<br /> <br /> The Imam, in his remarks, said he was not looking for publicity when he rescued the villagers, but felt that God only used him to save their lives.<br /> <br /> The cleric, who spoke through an interpreter, added, “I pleaded with the attackers not to harm my guests. By God’s grace, no one was hurt. Such an incident (the attack) is rare in my community, but I hope such does not happen again.”<br /> <br /> Those on the visit with Abubakar were the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington; Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy in Nigeria, David Young; an embassy official, Kathleen Fitzgibbon; and the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Bernhard Schlagheck.
