The acting Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Abdul Kafarati, has redeployed 10 judges of the Federal High Court to different divisions of the court across the country.<br />

The affected judges, according to a circular by the court, are to leave the divisions where they currently sit and resume at their new stations on October 27, 2017.<br />
<br />
The redeployment is said to be in accordance with the directive of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, that heads of various courts should constitute special courts for the speedy trial of corruption cases pursuant to the Federal Government’s anti-graft war.<br />
<br />
By the circular, Justice Saliu Saidu, who currently sits at the Bayelsa division, will move to Lagos; Justice B.B. Aliyu will move from Yola to Port Harcourt; Justice I.M. Sani will move from Lokoja to Uyo; Justice I.L. Ojukwu will move from Uyo to Abuja; while Justice D.U. Okoronkwo, who currently sits in Ekiti will move to Lokoja.<br />
<br />
Others moved are Justice F.O. Giwa-Ogunganjo; Justice Adamu Turaki Mohammed; Justice Abdulaziz Anka; and Justice Ibrahim Watila.<br />

The circular read in part, “In view of the recent circular by the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria regarding the need to clear corruption and criminal cases, I have decided to reshuffle the current posting of judges…<br />
<br />
“Affected judges are expected to resume in their new divisions by October 23rd, 2017.<br />
<br />
“The judges shall continue with the hearing of criminal cases currently before them, as well as at least two witnesses have testified.”</div>

The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Ooin Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has expressed the need for Nigeria to remain for Nigerians to continue to live in peace despite all their diversity.<br />

The Ooni spoke in the government house Umuahia, Abia State while on a courtesy call to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on Friday.<br />

He said the earlier Nigerians realize that they are one, the better things will turn around for good in the Country, pointing out that, “our strength is in our diversity”.<br />
<br />
The Ooni further added that all the tribes in Nigeria are all spiritually linked and had always worked together.<br />
<br />
He added, “Our diversity is truly our strength, it is very important for all of us to know that we must chart a course for positive energy in doing things most especially among the youths of this Country”.<br />
<br />
He commiserated with people of the State over the crisis that bedevilled the state last month and thanked God that peace has finally returned to the State.<br />
<br />
The Ooni said, “I will not come to Abia State and forget to mention the entire crisis that happened in this State. While all that was happening we stood by you in our prayers. Today I’m here and can I see that peace has returned.<br />
<br />
“We all must come together to make this country a better place, once again I want to let you know that you are not alone in this, we are praying for and we don’t want any issue again, we don’t want any war, disintegration and any trouble for this country.<br />
<br />
“The Igbo people are truly the life wire of this Country. This exemplified by their tradition of breaking kola nut because no one takes in kola nut with his life not properly gingered. That is the strength of the typical Igbo man and woman. That is the strength of the can-do spirit of the Igbo man that I’m very proud of and I’m very happy that culture is forever upheld.<br />
<br />
“For your children the youths I’m very proud of them any day, anytime because I will never dissociate myself from them. All we want you to do is to properly reorientate them that disintegration does not pay anybody; they can use their energy for positive things in this Country. They can use their energy to do things that are mentally simulating; they should do away with hate speeches.”<br />
<br />
The monarch said it will profit the State more to draw youths closer, other than throwing them away.<br />
<br />
“It does not pay anybody to push the youths away, we believe that the youths will continue to make you proud, the youth of Abia state and Nigeria must stand together and rechanneled the course of their actions to a proper positive course to do things right, the name that has been condemned can obliviously be reloaded and be referred today as “Ingenuous people for brighter Nigeria”.<br />

“The youths of this Country are the future of this Country, the youth of country, is the heartbeat of this country, the energy of this country, I want to encourage you to open the door, bring them in and re-orientate them and let them know that their welfare is your concern, there is something that is bordering them for them to be crying like this, he said.<br />
<br />
Responding, Governor Ikpeazu who thanked the Ooni for his prayer for the State, said the Government had already initiated a process of reintegration of the youths in the State through an enlarged empowerment plan.<br />
<br />
He pointed out that such plan includes sending over 100 youths from the State to China to understudy the process of automated production of shoes and bags.</div>

Igbo Etiti Local Government in Enugu State is to pay the registration fees of 200 students that would seat the 2018 secondary school certificate examinations organised by the West African Examination Council (WAEC).<br />

Mr Ignatius Ishienyi, Chairman of the council, made the disclosure while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Friday in Enugu.<br />

“We have resolved to pay the fees for 200 students that are from our local government; we have also resolved that we shall not discriminate along party lines,” he said.<br />
<br />
He said that the gesture was aimed at making the impact of governance felt by everyone in the area.<br />
<br />
“We have already compiled the names of all the students in senior secondary school 111 (SS3), who are indigenes of Igbo Etiti. We shall also not discriminate on the grounds of economic standings,” he added.<br />
<br />
The chairman said that the council would provide school desks to all primary schools to improve the teaching and learning atmosphere. </div>

California became the first “sanctuary state” for undocumented immigrants Friday, a decision criticized by the Trump administration which believes the move will compromise security.<br />

California’s governor, Democrat Jerry Brown, signed the landmark legislation — Senate Bill 54 (SB54) — which grants better protections to people who are in the US without permission, including those who have committed crimes.<br />
<br />
It also limits cooperation between local police forces and federal authorities in operations to track down undocumented immigrants.<br />
<br />
The legislation, which will come into effect on January 1, 2018, is part of a series of laws which protect the almost 3 million undocumented immigrants living in California — most of whom are from Mexico and Central America.<br />
<br />
Brown insisted in his signing statement the measure will not “prevent or prohibit Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or the Department of Homeland Security from doing their own work in any way” — but it will stop local authorities from assisting.<br />
<br />
“They are free to use their own considerable resources to enforce federal immigration law in California,” he wrote, adding that the new legislation will not deny ICE access to prisons.<br />
<br />
But in a statement, ICE acting director Tom Homan responded: “The governor is simply wrong.”<br />
<br />
The law will “undermine public safety and hinder ICE from performing its federally mandated mission,” Homan said.<br />
<br />
“Ultimately, SB54 (…) creates another magnet for more illegal immigration,” he insisted, adding ICE will have “no choice but to conduct at-large arrests in local neighborhoods and at worksites, which will inevitably result in additional collateral arrests.”<br />
<br />
ICE said it will also likely send immigrants arrested in California to detention centers outside of the state, “far from any family they may have in California.”<br />
<br />
A number of cities in California, such as Los Angeles and San Francisco, have already banned police officers from collaborating with ICE on operations to capture undocumented immigrants.<br />
<br />
Last week, ICE detained 450 undocumented immigrants in the United States — 101 of whom were in Los Angeles.<br />
<br />
The bill signed into law by Brown also includes assistance for students and measures to combat abuse of tenants.</div>

Isiguzoro explained that during the meeting, it was agreed “that no Igbo man will lose his life or business or properties in any part of 19 Northern States of Nigeria”.<br />

According to him, the Abuja peace accord would be followed this month by Aba peace declaration, where all the Ethnic Nationalities Youth Groups will gather to give full support to the Nigeria Project.<br />

“Ohanaeze Youths call for calm, especially in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election scheduled for November 18th 2017. The Managing Director, AG Dangote Construction Company Ltd, Mr Ashif Juma, on Saturday said the firm has begun relocation of gas pipelines slowing down the Apapa-Wharf Road reconstruction project.<br />

Juma told the News Agency of Nigeria on the sidelines of a site inspection exercise that the construction work was divided into four sections.<br />
<br />
According to him, work is currently going on simultaneously on two sections.<br />
<br />
He said that gas pipes in the Right of Way had slowed down the project for more than two months.<br />
<br />
Juma identified the high traffic in the area as one of the challenges affecting the project, adding that a team of traffic consultants were handling this to ensure it does not affect construction work.<br />
<br />
“We are working with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and Gaslink to relocate some pipes under the drains.<br />
<br />
“Nobody was aware of the pipes when we began the project because this road was constructed over 40 years ago.<br />
<br />
“And nobody has drawings of where utilities are so, we have been careful excavating.<br />
<br />
“We are starting the relocation of the gas pipelines from today and it will take us one week of careful work to finish so that construction work can continue.<br />
<br />
“We need to dig deep to lay the foundation for a good concrete road but the gas pipes have not allowed us to do that so, we have been working on other sections.<br />
<br />
“After this relocation, we will do a good job as we have done in over 21 countries;  building durable concrete roads.<br />
<br />
“We only appeal to people of Lagos to be patient with us because this portion we are constructing will last more than 50 years,” he said.</div>

Telcomm Satellite TV says its newly inaugurated pay TV, TSTV Africa, will begin commercial operation on Nov. 1.<br />

Its Managing Director, Mr Bright Echefu, made this known while briefing journalists on Saturday in Abuja.<br />
<br />
Echefu added that TSTV would launch its services with about one million decoders nationwide.<br />
<br />
He said that at least 5,000 decoders TSTV would be released to the public next week for free, adding that it would use the first set of decoders with one month free subscription to test run its services.<br />
<br />
“Commercialization of our decoders will resume officially on Nov. 1 and by that time, every part of Nigeria would have TSTV decoders for people to buy.<br />
<br />
“We are releasing about one million which can go round and our target for the first quarter is one million units.<br />
<br />
“In every quarter we will bring one million units and we are targeting four million units within the next one year.<br />
<br />
“I can tell you categorically that some decoders will be released next week for Nigerians to test and we are going to cover the 36 states of the federation.<br />

“These decoders are going to be free and it close to 5,000 units to test and that will last for two weeks,’’ he said.</div>

As part of effort to ensure a credible governorship election in Anambra State on Nov. 18, the Independent National Electoral Commission, will on Wednesday commence training for different categories of officers that will participate in the poll.<br />

The acting Director-General of The Electoral Institute, Dr Sa’ad Umar Idris, saidin a statement on Friday the training would commence on Oct.11 and end on Nov. 15, in Awka, the state capital.<br />
<br />
He said the training of Electoral Officers/ Assistant Electoral Officers (Operations) would hold from Oct 11 to Oct. 13 while that of Assistant Electoral Officers Admin and Cluster would take place from Oct. 16 to Oct. 20.<br />
<br />
Idris added that training of the officers would be done in collaboration with the International Foundation for Electoral systems.<br />
<br />
“The purpose is to enable Electoral Officers and Assistant Electoral Officers (Ops) plan effectively for elections.<br />
<br />
“It is also for Electoral Officers to identify activities with timelines for a successful conduct of the election.<br />
<br />
“The training is equally meant to properly position the Electoral Officers/Assistant Electoral Officers (Operations) to enable them discharge ad-hoc staff training on polling and counting procedures effectively.<br />
<br />
“Expected benefits to be derived from training the AEOs Admin and Cluster include the conduct of Train of Trainers (ToT) for participation, to enable them coordinate and conduct electoral training at their Local Government Areas.”<br />
<br />
It added that the training of Security Personnel on electoral security best practices and knowledge of the electoral process would hold between Oct. 25 and Nov. 1.<br />
<br />
“Also to be trained on election duties by the Commission include Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs), Presiding and Assistant Presiding Officers (POs/APOs) and Collation/Returning Officers (COs/ROs).”<br />
<br />
He said the Polling Officers and Assistant Polling Officers would be trained on polling and counting procedures while the Collation Officers and Returning Officers would be trained on collation and returning of results/candidates.</div>

Central Bank of Nigeria governor , Mr Godwin Emefiele  has explained how President Muhammadu Buhari’s  promise to provide 360,000 jobs for youths nationwide,  will be actualised.<br />

Emefiele unfolded at a  stakeholders’ meeting the operational framework for the Accelerated Agricultural Development Scheme (AADS), under which the jobs will be created.<br />
<br />
He said AADS was targeted primarily at unemployed youths between the ages of 18 and 35.<br />
<br />
Emefiele said through the scheme, a minimum of 10,000 youths in each state, willing to engage in sustainable and profitable activities along the agriculture value chain, would be employed and trained.<br />
<br />
“I believe we are on the verge of something very significant with the AADS.<br />
<br />
“ This scheme has been designed to create an ecosystem with the active participation of the public sector, state governments and the private sector,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
Emefiele said the objectives of AADS included the creation of economy of scale of farming on contiguous land.<br />
<br />
“It will also assist farmers in embracing modern farming practices, such as use of tractors and irrigation schemes.<br />
<br />
“It aims to reduce cost of production with availability of high quality inputs at competitive prices and lowering delivery cost of extension services,’’ he explained.<br />
<br />
Emefiele said that state governments were expected to provide contiguous arable land, basic infrastructure, more efficient extension services, training and mentoring of the beneficiaries.<br />
<br />
“The CBN on its part will provide financing at single digit interest rates.<br />
<br />
“Beneficiaries are not expected to come up with any physical collateral but they must be grouped into formally registered cooperatives and cross-guarantee each other.<br />
<br />
“All loan beneficiaries must also have valid Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), which will be registered on the National Collateral Registry and used to track repayments and also blacklist any defaulters.<br />
<br />
Emefiele said that with the release of the operational framework for the scheme, engagements with stakeholders would be continuous to ensure that the scheme began during the dry season cultivation of the outgoing year.<br />
<br />
Also, the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development would be providing technical support for the project.<br />
<br />
“We will be fully involved in the land clearing aspect of the project. In some places we will also be building dams and lakes to ensure all season farming.<br />
<br />
“We will also provide advice because we have a team of experts at the ministry on crops, soil testing and the right kind of fertiliser so that when these young people go into agriculture, they won’t lose money,” he said.<br />
<br />
The Governor of Kebbi, Mr Atiku Bagudu, thanked the Federal Government for recognising the significance of agriculture in economic development.<br />
<br />
“We could not have recovered from recession as early as we did if not for the intense agricultural intervention initiated by President Muhammadu Buhari,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
Bagudu also stressed the need to involve financial institutions, which banking models allowed them to support agriculture, for the programme to succeed.</div>

Mr. Tunde Lemo, former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been appointed as Chairman of the 13- member governing board of Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).<br />

President Muhammadu Buhari approved the appointments of the members of the board.<br />

Mr. Mohammed Nakorji, Assistant Director press in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) announced the appointments on Friday in Abuja.<br />

He stated that other members of the FERMA board are Mr Nurudeen Rafindadi, Mr Buba Silas Abdullahi, Mr Babagana Mohammad Aji and Mr Shehu Udman Abdullahi.<br />
<br />
He said that others are Loretta Ngozichukwu Aniagolu, Mujaidu Stanley Dako, Vincent Oladapo Kolawole, Chukwunwike Uzo, Mrs Olubunmi Siyanbola and Alhaji Abdulrazak Ma'aji.<br />
<br />
He also mentioned Alhaji Saidu Abdulkadir and Peter Osawe as members of the board.<br />
<br />
Nakorji stressed that the appointment of the FERMA board was subject to the confirmation of the Senate.<br />
<br />
He added that the President also approved the re-appointment of Mr Peter Ewesor as the Managing Director of NEMSA for a final term of four years in accordance with the provisions of Section 7(3) of Agency’s Act 2015.<br />
<br />
He explained that the re-appointment of the NEMSA boss was with effect from Oct. 3. </div>

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has denied the report that it colluded with some banks to prevent the remittance of some funds into the treasury single accounts (TSA) as directed by the federal government.<br />

In a statement by Ndu Ughamadu, its group general manager, group public affairs division, the corporation described the allegation as not only “misplaced but equally misleading”.<br />
<br />
Ughamadu said the corporation had earlier taken steps to inform the presidency, office of the accountant general of the federation, (AGF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN) on the existence of the said accounts prior to the creation of the federal government asset recovery account.<br />
<br />
“It would be totally out of place to move the funds to the federal government asset recovery account as reported,” the statement read.<br />
<br />
“It is unreasonable and sheer waste of funds to pay any agent five percent, whistleblowing fee for the phantom recovery of genuine NNPC funds which had been disclosed to the presidency, CBN and other relevant stakeholders.<br />
<br />
“Based on this superior argument, the consultant appointed by government to investigate the alleged hidden remittances was instructed to withdraw the pending court case against some commercial entities at the federal high court, Lagos.”<br />
<br />
The statement said in line with the directive of the presidency, the apex bank is supervising the remittance of the funds to the CBN TSA account.<br />
<br />
The NNPC said as an “entity with fiduciary responsibility to the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”, its commitment to transparency and accountability remains unwavering.</div>

There was heavy security presence at the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Abuja on Friday.<br />

Armed security men from the Nigeria Police Force and the Army were sighted at the entrance of the oil firm, while police pickup vans and armoured personnel carriers were conspicuously stationed on both sides of the roads that lead to the NNPC.<br />
<br />
It was learnt that the deployment was sequel to a request by the security department of the corporation.<br />
<br />
A source at the security department told one of our correspondents that the move had become necessary due to the tension generated by the memo written by the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, to President Muhammadu Buhari, which was leaked.<br />
<br />
The minister, had in the memo accused the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Maikanti Baru, of insubordination.<br />
<br />
The memo has generated reactions from Civil Society Organisations, opposition parties and even the National Assembly, which had commenced investigation into the allegations of the awarding of contracts to the tune of $24bn without due process.<br />
<br />
A source at the NNPC said, “There have been soldiers at the NNPC since the Boko Haram threats of 2013.<br />
<br />
“However, we received fresh reports that people may be coming to demonstrate at the NNPC, so we had to beef the security up around the NNPC.<br />
<br />
“Also, the feud between both sides has caused some division at the NNPC. For now, visitors won’t be allowed to drive in, except they have special appointment or they are contractors and there are special identity cards given to contractors.”<br />
<br />
The source revealed that soldiers were running eight-hour shifts at the NNPC and had also been placed on alert.<br />
<br />
He added, “There are eight soldiers on duty every eight hours and then there are snipers at the six watch towers.<br />
<br />
“Under the bridge beside the NNPC, there is a military unit on standby. They have been there since Boko Haram started sending threat messages but now that two bosses are fighting, they have also been placed on alert.<br />
<br />
“Security has also been beefed up because of the sensitivity of the issue. They are under a Senate investigation and all those who got the (about) $24bn contracts have their interests to protect, including international oil companies. So, we are just taking precautionary steps.”<br />
<br />
The situation around the NNPC headquarters was described as unusual by people working there.<br />
<br />
But when contacted to speak on why there was heavy security presence at the corporation, the firm’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Ndu Ughamadu, described the development as normal.<br />
<br />
He said, “From time to time, we do that. They were there like that sometime last month, and so on and so forth. However, you are aware that this is the country’s national oil corporation and it needs security presence, just like the kind of heavy security presence at the Central Bank of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“So it is not unusual. The security men are always there. Last month, they sent mobile police and military contingents here. Do you expect a national oil corporation not to have security presence?”<br />
<br />
When one of our correspondents insisted that the security presence had increased, the NNPC spokesperson replied, “We had about the same level of security presence last month. Most times, heavy security vehicles come in and go out.<br />
<br />
“If you come here around 3pm daily, you will see heavy military vehicles moving in and out when they are changing duties. So the official reaction you seek to this issue is that it is a normal routine.”<br />
<br />
Also, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command spokesman, Anjuguri Manzah, said the tightening of security around the NNPC Towers was “just routine police movement.”<br />
<br />
He denied that there was a security emergency at the NNPC headquarters, adding that the police operatives deployed in the complex were on regular police duties.<br />
<br />
“There was no security emergency; the deployment was just routine police movement. I am sure the men must have left the place by now. They are not meant to stay there for long,” he explained.<br />
<br />
It was however gathered that the armoured trucks and pickup vans left the area at 5pm when most offices in the area had closed.</div>

Tunisia ’94 Africa  Cup of Nations winner, Mutiu Adepoju, has said  Zambia could shock  Nigeria  in their  Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo on Saturday if the Super  Eagles fail to play as a team.<br />

Adepoju, who spoke with our correspondent on the phone during the week, urged the Eagles to take the game seriously, saying the Zambians could spring a surprise.<br />

He said, “The match will not be a stroll in the park for Eagles because the Zambian team they will play on Saturday are not the same side they beat 2-1  in Ndola last year. The Eagles need to be very careful and cautious in their approach to the match.<br />
<br />
“Nobody believed or thought that the Zambians would go to Algeria and get a win (1-0) after doing the same in a comfortable manner at home  (3-1). The Eagles need to go all out for victory in Uyo.<br />
<br />
“The players should have in mind that they are on the brink of qualifying for the World Cup, which is their target. Teamwork and a winning mentality will give Nigeria.”<br />

Adepoju, who featured in the team that beat Chipolopolo 2-1 to win the 1994 AFCON,   said the Eagles should not underrate their opponents.<br />

He said, “We have an advantage over them going into  the match because we have beaten them more than they have beaten us, and they have yet to beat us on our own turf while we have done that several times to them.<br />
<br />
“What the Eagles had going for them to achieve that is the hunger to be the best on the continent and also the ability of the players to play for one another. If the Eagles lack that zeal and hunger to be the best, then it is possible for Zambia to rewrite history just like the South Africans did some months ago.<br />
<br />
“They will be coming with a mindset that they are playing against, the best team in the group, and Nigeria should not see themselves as  such. The hunger and resilience used to play the two legs against Cameroon last month should be seen in the Eagles for them to win.”<br />
<br />
The former Spain-based midfielder, who represented Nigeria at the USA ’94 and France ’98 World Cups, added, “The Eagles have a good midfield and a fast attack but they need to be careful at the back to avoid conceding goals that could hurt the outcome of the match.  Ikechukwu Ezenwa should be in goal based on his good performances against Cameroon and at the WAFU Cup.<br />

“The central defence pairing of Leon Balogun  and William Troost-Ekong  should concentrate  on their job and help the right and left backs to contain the threat of the Zambian attackers.”<br />

Buhari said this while addressing a delegation of the justices of the Supreme Court and the Appeal Court as well as heads of other judicial organs who paid him a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<br />

The delegation, led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, visited the president to welcome him from his recent medical vacation.<br />
<br />
“We need a new approach to prison congestion. It is a national scandal that many of our prisons are overcrowded by up to 90 percent.<br />
<br />
“Urgent measures should be put in place to speedily decongest the prisons not only in the interest of justice but also to save cost of prisons’ maintenance and welfare of prisoners.<br />
<br />
“My Attorney-General is advocating a setting up of courts inside the prisons to speed up decongestion and the logistic problems of transporting prisoners from prisons to courts.”<br />
<br />
Buhari also said his administration was mindful of the challenges being faced by the judiciary especially in the areas of infrastructure and funding.<br />
<br />
This, he said, made the Federal Government to increase the budget for the judiciary in the 2017 Appropriation Act.<br />
<br />
He explained, “We are not unmindful of the daunting challenges faced by the judiciary in the areas of infrastructure and funding.<br />
<br />
“This informed our decision to increase the judiciary budget in the 2017 fiscal year which we are committed to sustaining<br />
<br />
“I am asking the AGF to take this matter up with the salaries and wages commission for advice to the President.<br />
<br />
“I really appreciate the efforts you are making. We know that the stability of the country depends on the police and the judiciary.<br />
<br />
“When people believe that their cases will be speedily and justifiably treated, I am telling you, they will mind their own businesses, but when they are in cover with the police and the judiciary, then we have a problem and the money that we need for development especially education infrastructure and health care will be spent on security.”</div>

Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Bode George has expressed his readiness to deliver the presidential seat in 2019 if given the mandate to lead the PDP.<br />

In his speech entitled: ‘A new path, a new beginning’, Bode George, who declared his intention to contest the National Chairmanship position of the PDP during its December National Convention, promised to deploy experience and wisdom to rescue and position the party to regain power in 2019.<br />

The formal flag-off campaign attracted PDP members, who converged at the City Hall in Lagos.<br />
<br />

While he pledged to bring back the dignity of PDP by working diligently to unite members, he said as National chairman of the party, he would mend fences and heal old wounds for all to attain the collective aspiration of the once ruling party.<br />

The party leader said if elected as the PDP national chairman, his first task would be to reconcile feuding factions and ensure party officials at all levels are given recognitions they deserve.<br />

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Benin chapter, Edo State, has condemned the killing of a senior lecturer of the institution by gunmen, describing it as one death too many.<br />

It also blamed the incident on the high level of insecurity in the state, which he said had kept the citizens under siege.<br />
<br />
This is just as the Peoples Democratic Party blamed the increasing crime rate to the huge number of unemployed youths in the state, a ‎claim the state government dismissed as false.<br />
<br />
The deceased lecturer, Prof. Paul Otasowie, was said to have been shot dead in front of his residence on Ekehuan road in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State on Wednesday evening.<br />
<br />
Otasowie, who was of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and a former Director of the institution’s Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme, was said to have been shot while in his car in a manner in which many suspected to be an assassination.<br />
<br />
Although the police command could not be reached for comments on the matter, as the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Moses Nkombe, neither responded to calls or a text message sent to his telephone number by our correspondent, three suspects were said to have been arrested in connection with the killing.<br />
<br />
However, the Chairman of the union in the institution, Prof. Julius Iyasele, said, “As it were, citizens of Edo State and Nigeria at large are under siege because within the space of one or two months, a number of our colleagues have been kidnapped or murdered in cold blood. A few days, a colleague from Ekiti State University, who is a council chairman in one of the polytechnics in Bayelsa, was shot at on the Benin bypass.<br />
<br />
“The bullet pierced through the stomach of the driver and came out from the other side. The boy was just only lucky. And they said that they had just left a police checkpoint on the bypass when it happened. I don’t know whether we have security agents in the state.<br />
<br />
“Yesterday, one of our colleague’s in-law who visited at Ekiadolor was also picked by kidnappers. When they (family) went to drop the money to release the person, from the experience of the victim, the people (kidnappers) were with sub-machine guns because they had bullets strapped around them.”<br />
<br />
Iyasele faulted the disbandment of community development associations without an alternative for the dependants and called on the state government and the Nigeria Police to step up their security strategies in order to protect lives and property.<br />
<br />
According to him, “The state government stopped CDAs and there is no alternative to them. These boys (CDA members) are people who are to used spending big-time money. You blocked area boys and there is no alternative; you have simply unleashed terror on the people.<br />
<br />
“The actions (outlawing CDAs) but what we are saying is that you should have provided an alternative that is so simple to get.”<br />
<br />
On its part, the PDP in a statement signed by it Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Nehikhare, alleged that high level of crime was occasioned by the “new policy thrust” of the state government.<br />
<br />
It, therefore, called for collaborative efforts between government and security agencies in order to tackle the menace,<br />
<br />
The statement read in part, “The ‘we-will partner-with-you’ government in Edo State should stop chasing shadows and tackle substance. The insecurity in the state is most likely a direct consequence of the new policy thrusts of this government.<br />
<br />
“This advice has become imperative as our lives are no longer safe with the daily reports of kidnapping and armed robbery. No investor will come to Edo with the crime rate the way it is, especially when there seem like no effort is been made in trying to tackle it.”<br />
<br />
<br />
Reacting, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said that while there was no excuse for engaging crime, the state had a better employment record than any of its peer states in the South-South region.<br />
<br />
“I think we should allow the police to carry out their constitutional responsibility. Many people have that the governor is the chief security officer of the state; of course, he is.<br />
<br />
“But you are aware that the Federal Government is solely responsible for the administration, management ‎and operation of the police and all other security agencies in the country. The responsibility of ensuring law and order rests squarely in the security agencies, led by the police.<br />
<br />
“And the police have made statement concerning the professor, that it is cult-related and they have three people in custody. So, I think that should be the narrative, instead of trying to put political colouration into it.‎”</div>

The Nigerian Immigration Service on Friday told a Federal High Court, Abuja, that Sylvester Ngwuta, a suspended justice of the Supreme Court used two similar standard international passports interchangeably.<br />

A senior staff of the service, Mr Tanko Kutana, made the claim while being cross-examined by counsel for the defendant, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN).<br />
<br />
Ngwuta was among seven superior court judges that were arrested between Oct. 7 and Oct. 8, 2016, after the DSS raided their homes in what it termed a “sting operation.”<br />
<br />
The defendant is alleged to have been in possession of multiple standard travel passports and stashed foreign currencies in his Abuja home.<br />
<br />
The witness said the service was not in the position to doubt the defendant when he showed proof of his missing international passport.<br />
<br />
According to him, the service subsequently issued him a new one, based on the strength of the affidavit declaring his old passport missing.<br />
<br />
Kutana, however, said the service was taken aback to discover that the defendant was using the two passports stamped with visas simultaneously.<br />
<br />
When asked if the action could have been a mistake from the defendant, the witness said the action violated immigration law.<br />
<br />
He said it was outright illegality to have and use two standard passports with similar registration number interchangeably.<br />
<br />
“My Lord, the new passport was issued to Justice Ngwuta by the Immigration Service, having been convinced that he actually lost the first one.<br />
<br />
“The service replaced the lost passport because it had no cause to doubt the affidavit evidence deposed to by the defendant when he reported the loss of the document,’’ Kutana said.<br />
<br />
He said the defendant failed to report back to the service when he eventually found the missing passport.<br />
<br />
“The forensic report shows that the defendant, Ngwuta using the two standard passports interchangeable, at the time of his arrest on Oct. 7, 2016 by the operatives of the Department of State Service.<br />
<br />
“We would not have been here if the defendant had returned the recovered passport to the service when he found it,’’ he said.<br />
<br />
The witness who confirmed that four diplomatic passports and two standard passports were found in the possession of the defendant, however, said the forensic analysis on the six passports did not show evidence of forgery<br />
<br />
“I did the analysis on the six passports to determine whether there was forgery and by the time I concluded my analysis of the passports I found no evidence of forgery in any of them,’’ the witness said.<br />
<br />
He said there were circumstances under which a citizen could have more than one passport, adding that it did not include having two similar ones.<br />
<br />
Justice John Tsoho adjourned the trial until Oct. 20.</div>

Bashir quoted the President as commending the judges for setting up the committee to monitor anti-corruption cases.<br />

Jupp Heynckes is coming out of retirement to take over as coach of Bayern Munich until the end of the season, the Bundesliga club said on Friday.<br />

Bayern sacked Carlo Ancelotti last week.<br />
<br />
Heynckes, 72, led Bayern to the domestic league and Cup double and the Champions League title in 2013 before making way for Spaniard Pep Guardiola.<br />
<br />
Ancelotti took over last season but the Italian was fired after Bayern slipped to second place in the league, squandering two-goal leads in consecutive games. They also lost 3-0 at Paris St Germain in the Champions League.<br />
<br />
“I wouldn’t have returned to any other club in the world, but FC Bayern Munchen are very close to my heart,” Heynckes said in a statement on the club website.<br />
<br />
“My coaching staff and I will now do everything to bring back successful football for the fans. I‘m very much looking forward to this challenge.”<br />
<br />
Heynckes, who also coached Bayern from 1987-91, will reunite with former assistants Peter Hermann and Hermann Gerland, who were part of his backroom staff during the club’s treble-winning season.<br />
<br />
Hermann has left his post as assistant coach at Bundesliga 2 side Fortuna Duesseldorf, while Gerland - currently sporting head of Bayern’s youth set-up - will now work with the first team until the end of the season.<br />
<br />
“There’s a great mutual trust between Jupp Heynckes and FC Bayern,” CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. “We’re very thankful to Jupp that he’s accepted the offer of head coach. He’s the ideal man for FC Bayern at this moment in time.”<br />
<br />
Heynckes’s first match in charge is a home game against Freiburg on Oct. 14. Bayern are five points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga standings after seven games.</div>

Chelsea FC of England’s Victor Moses has top –scored with three goals, two of them against Algeria’s Fennecs in Uyo in November 2016 (the first and third goals) and the other (the third goal) in the 4-0 whitewash of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions also in Uyo last month.<br />

Captain Mikel Obi has scored twice, also both at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. He netted the second goal against Algeria in November 2016 and also the second against Cameroon last month.<br />
<br />
Forward Kelechi Iheanacho has also scored two goals, the first being the second goal against Zambia in Ndola in October 2016 and the second being the final goal in the 4-0 defeat of Cameroon in Uyo last month.<br />

Other scorers are Arsenal FC of England’s Alex Iwobi (who scored Nigeria’s first goal of the series, in the defeat of Zambia in Ndola in October 2016); Odion Ighalo who scored the opener against African champions Cameroon last month in Uyo and; Belgium –based Moses Simon whose goal shot the Eagles ahead against Cameroon in Yaounde last month.<br />

There’s a video currently trending on social media and it has caused quite the reaction from a lot of people. In the video, an overweight woman lies on the floor while some pastors are gathered around her, praying for “that spirit that reduces weight” to help the woman lose weight.<br />

Gunmen kidnap Kogi Magistrate, Sam Unwuchola, demand N100m ransom

A Magistrate with Kogi State Judiciary, Mr Sam Unwuchola, has been abducted by unknown gunmen on Ajaokuta-Lokoja road.<br />

<img src="http://dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/gunmen1.jpg" /><a name='more' id="more"></a>An eye-witness who prefers anonymity, told our correspndent that the magistrate who was returning from Onyedega, his station, in company of a friend, was kidnapped at Jimgbe, near Salem University, Lokoja at about 7pm Thursday.<br />

The eyewitness said the Magistrate and his friend ran into the hoodlums who opened fire on them, forcing them to stop.<br />
<br />
The bandits, according to him, shot at the Magistrate’s friend who was on the passenger’s seat, adding that the bullet had almost removed the left eye and shattering his cheek bone.<br />
<br />
The wounded friend of Unwuchola whose identity is not immediately known, he added, was rushed to an undisclosed medical facility in Lokoja for treatment.<br />
<br />
Confirming the incident, an authoritative source from the state judiciary told journalists that the kidnappers had made contact with the wife of the kidnapped magistrate and have demanded N100 million ransom.<br />
<br />
Mrs Unwuchola was said to have pleaded with the kidnappers to have mercy on her asking where the family cannot afford such amount of money.<br />
<br />
Contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ali Janga said the police was still investigating the matter.<br />
<br />
Unwuchola, a 2002 Law graduate of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma is currently the President, Upper Area Court, Onyedega, Ibaji Local Government Area of the state.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; line-height: 1.55; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Following the coercion, Nwosu claimed that the operative in company of two armed mobile police escorted him to the bank where he made a draft of N4 million in the name of the commission before he was released.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; line-height: 1.55; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">He told the court that Zakari also asked him to bring another draft of N1 million which made the cash collected from him N5 million.</span></div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; line-height: 1.55; margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 0px; text-align: justify; vertical-align: baseline;"><span style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Nwosu further stated that EFCC prosecutor, Rotimi Oyedepo, ordered Zakari to keep him in detention.</span></span></div>

When Mr. Zakari came and read my statement, he said no, I have not written what he wants to hear and that he has signed my detention order form and was going to detain me and that even if I bring 10 lawyers, they won’t help me except I write what he dictate to me, he was going to keep me.</span></div>

He said unless I stated that I benefitted N30million, he would dump me in the cell. I quickly told him I benefitted. He dictated to me that I should write it; I did.</span></div>

He said he would ensure that I was convicted and jailed at all cost if I didn’t cooperate.”</span></div>
