Nimr did not deny the political charges against him, but said he never carried weapons or called for violence.<br /> <br /> The execution prompted calls for demonstrations in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province and in other countries of the Middle East, but the brother of Nimr called for calm in Eastern Province.<br /> <br /> “This action will spark anger of [Shia] youths” in Saudi Arabia, but “we reject violence and clashing with authorities”, said Mohammed al-Nimr.<br /> <br /> Many of the other men executed had been linked to attacks in the kingdom between 2003 and 2006, blamed on al-Qaeda.<br /> <br /> Among them was al-Qaeda preacher al-Zahani, once considered one of Saudi Arabia’s “most-wanted terrorists”.<br /> <br /> He was detained in 2004 while allegedly in possession of weapons.<br /> <br /> An Egyptian citizen and a Chadian citizen were also among the executed, the ministry said. The rest were all Saudis.<br /> <br /> Notably absent from the list, was Nimr’s nephew, Ali. He was arrested at the age of 17.<br /> <br /> Hussain al-Shobokshi, a prominent Saudi columnist, told Al Jazeera that Saudi authorities did not differentiate between “Shia source of terror and Sunni source of terror”.<br /> <br /> “[Saudi Arabia] made sure it saw no difference between any form of terror, as long as it was threatening its people and its economy,” he said.<br /> <br /> The interior ministry said that those convicted had participated in attacks against residential compounds and government buildings.<br /> <br /> Bombings of compounds in Riyadh in May 2003 killed more than 30 people.<br /> <br /> The following year there were 30 attacks, which led to a government crackdown on al-Qaeda and other homegrown fighters.<br /> <br /> Nimr had called for the oil-rich Eastern Province, where about two million Shia live, to be separated from the rest of Saudi Arabia.<br /> <br /> He also criticised the government for what he said was the marginalisation of the Shia minority in the country.<br /> <br /> The announcement of the executions comes just days after Amnesty International said that Saudi Arabia executed at least 151 people in 2015, the most beheadings in 20 years.<br /> <br /> Khalid al-Dakhil, a Saudi political commentator based in Riyadh, challenged “the integrity” of the rights organisation’s report, saying it failed to mention Iran’s execution record.<br /> <br /> “Iran executes far more people a year than Saudi Arabia, but it does not get the negative publicity Saudi Arabia has. Today, the APC is the governing party, and the PDP has not and probably will never forgive him.<br /> <br /> The fact that the achievements of the man are still been talked about with relish and nostalgia is a testimony to his great feat that helped to decimate the PDP.<br /> <br /> But pray, how can it be a crime that Mohammed played a pivotal role in changing the nature of politics and information management system in Nigeria?<br /> <br /> Even in his new role as the Minister of Information and Culture, Mohammed’s exploits have not gone unnoticed. Realizing that one of the keys to successful democratic governance is to ensure effective and sustainable communication between the government and its citizens, the Minister started off by holding a series of consultations and interactive meetings with stakeholders in the information sector, including the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), Radio and Television Theatre Workers Union (RATTAWU) and civil society organisations.<br /> <br /> It is also remarkable that unlike the norm in this clime, the Minister has directed government-controlled media not to deny the opposition the opportunity to be heard. This is impressive, considering what some of these media establishments did to his party in its days in opposition.<br /> <br /> Despite the daily attacks on the person of Mohammed, the good news is that Nigerians are so discerning that no one can deceive them. Much as they attempted to demonise the man before and during the last general elections, Nigerians sided with him by rewarding his party with their votes, which in turn propelled the party to power.<br /> <br /> That explains why, despite the packaged and unrelenting media attacks against him, Mohammed’s hard-earned reputation remains rock solid, especially as he has also availed himself creditably in his new role as the country’s image maker.<br /> <br /> It will, therefore, do the anti-Lai Mohammed drum beaters and their pay masters a lot of good if they could quickly realise the nullity of their actions and retrace their steps for good.<br /> <br /> Thousands of empty sponsored write-ups would not suffice against an innocent man whose only offence is that he is part of a team that is assiduously working to lay the foundation of the rebirth of a new Nigeria.<br /> <br /> Their latest past time is to blame Lai for rallying support for the military in the war against insurgency, yet it is on record that this military, which has been given a new lease of life by President Muhammadu Buhari, has successfully degraded the capacity of the Boko Haram insurgents to take over any part of the nation’s territory as against what was witnessed during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.<br /> <br /> Also, it is common knowledge that the insurgents, who at one time controlled territories in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, have now been dislodged from their strongholds and sent fleeing.<br /> <br /> Those who still believe in Nigeria and the ability of the present government to overcome the huge challenges facing the nation must not cede the space to the naysayers. They must tackle them the same way they did in the run-up to the elections that gave the APC victory. They must join hands with the Minister of Information and Culture to continuously work to bridge the information gap between the government and the citizenry, in the overall interest of the corporate existence of the country.<br /> <br /> Adamu is resident in Abuja.

All we hear from the APC regarding our freedom is ‘we won’t tolerate’, ‘we won’t condone.’ Are these words used by democrats or tyrants?<br /> <br /> “So, the PDP too is being warned and coerced on what to say as opposition party. The PDP must be commended for the civil, responsible, mature, issue-based opposition it has played. The nation knows how the APC rained insults on former President Jonathan and that the PDP, during that time, never used words like ‘it would not condone…’<br /> <br /> “Some have even criticised the PDP style of opposition as being too civil considering the tyranny we are facing. That is why Chief John Oyegun could term a dictionary word-‘tyrant’- as insulting. Nigerians do not need the PDP or anyone else to make them decide if President Buhari’s APC government fits the definition of a tyrant.<br /> <br /> “The real trait of the President was unraveled during the media chat. He has repeatedly shown his scorn for the Legislature, an independent arm of government while sanctioning security agencies’ disrespect for court orders and the impunity of continuous incarceration of people who have been granted bails by the courts.<br /> <br /> “Also from his responses, the President has even pronounced a guilty verdict on Col Sambo Dasuki and Nnamdi Kanu of Radio Biafra even before the hearings by the courts. Sadly, even the international community has noted this brazen scorn and disdain for the independence of the judiciary.<br /> <br /> “Furthermore, how do we describe a President who openly denigrated an entire race as he did in the media chat when he suggested that the Igbos were insatiable with the appointments his government has so far given to them? Indeed, the timing and the tenor of the President’s comment, given the security and political situation in the land, remain worrisome, especially at a time a nerve-soothing statement from the father of the nation could have reassured the agitators of the need for peace and unity in the nation.<br /> <br /> “Besides, it is sad and embarrassing that President Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade has now been reduced to a war between the APC and the PDP as declared by the Office of his spokespersons. Since they have confirmed that this is what the anti-corruption crusade is all about, the APC is obviously seeking to destroy the PDP so that it can push through Buhari’s second tenure in 2019 without opposition from the PDP.<br /> <br /> “This has also confirmed our concern that this is the reason the Federal Government is persecuting, and not prosecuting, Col. Sambo Dasuki. The APC and its leaders fear that Dasuki, given his vast political and security network, may be harbouring a presidential ambition, more so that the PDP has zoned its presidential ticket to the north.<br /> <br /> “The PDP is conversant with the sinister plan by the APC-led Federal Government to completely decimate our party by raking up all manner of allegations of corruption against the Goodluck Jonathan administration and leaders of the PDP with a view to taking them to court on orchestrated charges.<br /> <br /> “Finally we are aware that President Buhari has directed security agencies to be more vicious in dealing with our members and has continued to subtly coerce the Judiciary to convict those being charged to court. But what gives us joy is that President Buhari is not God and we will not worship him.

Gregory Ochiagha, and more than 100 priests at St. Aloysius Parish Abajah compound on Friday.<br /> <br /> The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Chief Obinna Onuoha, who donated the Jesus statue had constructed 2, 000 seating capacity parish church at St. Aloysius in the year 2012.<br /> <br /> NAN further reports that the unveiling of the statue was used to mark the wedding golden jubilee ceremony of the parents of Obinna, Chief Geoffrey, and Lolo Justina Onuoha.<br /> <br /> Ukwuoma, who described the statue as magnificent, commended the Onuoha family for the gift and their benevolence to the church.<br /> <br /> “This statue is a great symbol of Christian faith, and I pray that for the Catholics that the statue will continue to constantly remind us of what Jesus Christ stands for us.<br /> <br /> “For other passersby, looking at the statue will also bring them closer to Jesus,” the Bishop said.<br /> <br /> Speaking on the golden jubilee, the cleric used the medium to remind marital couples on the need to see marriage as a vocation through which they could positively impact on the society.<br /> <br /> “God did not call any of us clergy and religious to be fathers and mothers, but those called into this vocation must use it to reflect God’s peace, love and unity.<br /> <br /> Chief Obinna Onuoha, the Managing Director of Premier Petroleum Ltd., and the donor of the statue, said that he constructed the statue to fulfill a vow he made to God in the year 1997.<br /> <br /> “Asking why I constructed this statue is like asking how do I came to this world, I am a Christian and a Catholic and Jesus statue represents my faith.<br /> <br /> “I believe we are here on earth for different purposes and each person moves with his/her instincts, and I was motivated to do this to build up the faith of this community,’’ he said.<br /> <br /> Onuoha, who did not mention the cost of the statue, added, “it took about three years to construct and erect the Jesus De Saviour statue at Abajah.”<br /> <br /> (NAN)

Dubai Investigates Cause Of 63-Storey Luxury Hotel Fire

<br /> Authorities in Dubai say they are working to determine the cause of the fire that engulfed a 63-storey luxury hotel in the city on New Year’s Eve even as firefighters continue to douse its embers.<br /> <br /> The fire erupted before the city’s fireworks extravaganza and engulfed the Address Downtown, comprising hotels and residences in Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates.<br /> <br /> The authorities said on Friday 16 people suffered mostly minor injuries despite the presence of thousands in the area to watch the celebrations.<br /> <br /> At least 14 people were slightly injured, one was moderately injured and one person suffered a heart attack during the evacuation, they said.<br /> <br /> All victims have been discharged from hospital except for a pregnant women and an elderly man who were said to be “well” but were kept in “to ensure their safety”, the civil defence said.<br /> <br /> Firefighters spent Thursday night trying to extinguish the blaze.<br /> <br /> Despite the fire, officials went ahead with plans to ring in the new year and thousands gathered in the area to watch the fireworks.<br /> <br /> The Address Downtown would have been a prime spot for viewing the midnight fireworks display, centred at the nearby Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.<br /> <br /> The Address Downtown boasts a luxury hotel with nearly 200 rooms, along with more than 600 residential units. Rentals of a one-bedroom can run $70,000 a year.<br /> <br /> The fire started around 9:30pm on Thursday, racing up the sides of the Address Downtown.<br /> <br /> More than 12 hours later on Friday morning, Dubai firefighters largely watched the fire from the ground, unable at one point to use a water hose on a ladder truck.<br /> <br /> They later regained water pressure and resumed spraying the building.<br /> <br /> Restaurants nearby opened on Friday for business, but served limited menus as civil defence officials cut natural gas to the area.<br /> <br /> By the afternoon, the blaze had largely died down, but small fires were still visible burning through some windows, sending smoke into the air.<br /> <br /> Dubai Civil Defence said the fire appeared to have started on the 20th-floor terrace, according to a statement by the government media office.<br /> <br /> Witnesses who saw the blaze start said they believed it began on the building’s ground floor.<br /> <br /> Civil defence said “cooling procedures” were still under way on Friday, and that the investigation was under way into the cause.<br /> <br /> Around one million people had been expected to gather around the Burj Khalifa skyscraper to watch the fireworks.<br /> <br />

FG Denies Plan To Change Uniform Of Prison Officials

<br /> <br /> The Federal Government has dismissed reports in a section of the media that plans are underway to change the uniform of officers of the Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS).<br /> <br /> The Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen Abdulrahman Dambazau (rtd) said this in a statement signed by Mr Bassey Akpanyung, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry on Friday in Abuja.<br /> <br /> “The attention of the minister, Lt. Gen Abulrahman Dambazau has been drawn to a publication to the effect that plans are underway to change the fatigue uniform of officers of the NPS.<br /> <br /> “Gen. Dambazau states that no such issue was discussed at any of its management meetings and therefore the report is false,” he said.<br /> <br /> The minister said that the priority of the Federal Government as regards to the NPS “remains the prisons reform’’.<br /> <br /> He said that the reform would specifically focus on prison decongestion, rehabilitation of convicts, improved welfare for officers as well as enhanced logistics and capacity building.<br /> <br /> Dambazau urged media practitioners to always cross check their reports before publication.<br /> <br /> It will be recalled that a section of the media had reported that the Federal Government plans to change the uniform of prison officials.<br /> <br />

<br /> <br /> The Theatre Command of Operation Lafiya Dole of the Nigerian Army has raised the alarm that Boko Haram insurgents are planning to execute bomb attacks in Borno using beggars among other strategies.<br /> <br /> Media coordinator of the command, Col. Mustapha Anka, disclosed this in a statement in Maiduguri, saying, “The attention of the Operation Lafiya Dole has been drawn to terrorists’ intention to use beggars to cause mayhem in the state.<br /> <br /> <br /> “Under the plan, concealed explosives in bundles of firewood are to be placed in crowded and strategic areas of Maiduguri and environs to cause havoc.’’<br /> <br /> He said that the insurgents had also devised a new means of recording larger casualty figures by attracting the public with shouts of ‘Boko Haram’ to create panic and draw more people to places where attacks would take place.<br /> <br /> He said, “Additionally, the general public should be weary of the terrorists’ plan to deceive the public by shouting ‘Boko Haram’ to create panic in order to lure unsuspecting public for maximum casualty, while detonating their bombs during and after the New Year celebrations.”<br /> <br /> He, therefore, advised residents to be vigilant during and after the New Year celebrations, adding that the ban on bangers and fireworks was still in force.

<br /> <br /> The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, and his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Mr. Seriake Dickson, are again locked in a row as the January 9 rescheduled rerun in the state approaches.<br /> <br /> Sylva, through his campaign outfit, Sylva-Igiri Campaign Organisation, has alleged that Dickson is ready to trade off his party, the PDP, to have his second term realised.<br /> <br /> <br /> This is just as Dickson, in his reaction through his campaign team, the Bayelsa State Restoration Campaign Organisation, described Sylva’s allegation as laughable, deceitful and wicked propaganda.<br /> <br /> Dickson, who said he had no reason to defect to the APC in order to win an election he had already won, called on Sylva to accept the fact that the APC had lost the election and had been roundly rejected by the people.<br /> <br /> But the former governor said Dickson had been deceiving the people about the things he had been doing in his desperation to remain in office beyond February 14, 2016.<br /> <br /> Sylva said, “When it was widely reported by every news organisation in the country that Dickson visited the Presidential Villa last Tuesday, without invitation, to beg President Muhammadu Buhari to be allowed to go for a second tenure, the PDP and the state government denied the story strenuously.<br /> <br /> “Our sources confirmed to us that Dickson went to beg the Presidency to forgive him over his derogatory and inflammatory statements during the election and to prevail on me (Timipre Sylva) to soft pedal in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area to enable him to win the forthcoming rerun in the area.<br /> <br /> “In return for that favour, Dickson proposed to foment an artificial crisis in the PDP at the national level and use that as a basis to defect from his party to the ruling APC. His argument was that he recognised the fact that Bayelsa State cannot afford to remain in opposition to the ruling party.”<br /> <br /> He claimed that would be the second time Dickson would be seeking to dump the PDP for the APC in the course of elections in the state.<br /> <br /> He stated that the first time was in the heat of the National Assembly primaries of early last year, when he sought to replace all serving National Assembly members from the state with his cronies against the wishes of then President Goodluck Jonathan, who wanted the performing ones to be returned.<br /> <br /> He added, “On that occasion, he openly threatened both the former President and the PDP hierarchy of his readiness to defect to the APC and using his past relationship with the APC National Leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, to secure tickets for his preferred candidates as well as himself to defeat the PDP at the polls. Of course he got his way in that election.”<br /> <br /> But Dickson said no amount of propaganda, lies and deceit could change the outcome of an election that had already been won by the PDP and lost woefully by the APC.<br /> <br /> Dickson said, “The allegation by Sylva is laughable. It is shameful that even in the new year, Sylva is engaged in lies and deceit.<br /> <br /> “I have no reason to defect to the APC in order to win an election that has already been won. The APC and Sylva have not only lost this election, they have been roundly rejected by the people.”<br /> <br /> It will be recalled that before the cancellation of Southern Ijaw poll resulting in declaring the Bayelsa poll inconclusive, Dickson had polled 105,748 votes in seven out of eight LGAs of the state against Sylva’s 72,534.

<br /> <br /> The BringBackOurGirls advocacy group campaigning for the rescue of 219 abducted Chibok secondary schoolgirls by the Boko Haram in 2014 has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to set up a search and rescue team to find the missing girls.<br /> <br /> This followed a statement by President Buhari on Wednesday during his maiden media chat that his administration had no intelligence reports on the whereabouts of the Chibok girls.<br /> <br /> The BBOG, in a new year press conference held at the Unity Fountain, Abuja on Friday, asked the Federal Government to investigate all statements by high-ranking military officers that they knew where the Chibok girls were.<br /> <br /> Addressing journalists, a former Minister of Education and leader of the BBOG group, Dr. Oby Ezekwezili, said the Federal Government should also make public, the Gen.Sabo fact-finding committee report on the abduction of Chibok girls.<br /> <br /> The group, while lamenting that the President did not mention any rescue effort for the girls in his new year message, demanded that the President should give the rescue of the abducted Chibok girls the priority attention it deserves.<br /> <br /> “Boko Haram cannot be said to have been defeated technically or otherwise without the safe return of the abducted daughters,” it noted.<br /> <br /> Ezekwesili said, “We especially noted with great dismay that the issue of rescue of our Chibok girls and other citizens in terrorist captivity did not feature in the president’s New Year address to the nation today (Friday). The implication of such a deliberate omission is not lost on us.<br /> <br /> “Therefore we, #BringBackOurGirls movement, families of our Chibok girls, the Chibok community, and all sympathisers to the cause of these innocent schoolgirls continuously unjustly treated will be marching to re-engage with the president in two weeks, on Thursday January 14, 2016 at the State House.<br /> <br /> “This date will be exactly 21 months since their abduction, and three months short of two full years in captivity. We shall meet at Unity Fountain as from 8.30 am that day to proceed on the march. We have already dispatched a letter to the President, duly acknowledged by State House officials.”

You all are indeed good partners in progress and this is continually evident in this first year of our second term.<br /> <br /> “Truly, the first year of our second term is very important to us as a Government as it will dictate and set the tone for our second term which to us is indeed a period of “optimisation”.<br /> <br /> “Towards this end, the task of rebuilding our dear State and repositioning our workforce as the best in the country remains sacrosanct.<br /> <br /> ” It is as a result of these genuine people-oriented projects and developmental strides that our State has soared to a higher pedestal making it the envy of many and the pride of her citizens, both at home and in the Diaspora. Even, the most ardent of our critics have come to the conclusion that Ogun State is now carving a niche for itself among the comity of States.<br /> <br /> “I enjoin us all to continue to gird our loins and prepare ourselves for the challenges ahead. As a State, we must ensure that we are not caught unaware of the present economic slow-down, knowing fully well that challenges like these are veritable tools to be used as stepping stones for greatness.<br /> <br /> “With our collective prayer, sense of purpose and dogged determination, we will no doubt lift our State to the league of developed economies. Needless to say that the only way to continue to be good partners in progress is for every citizen to play his or her own part through cooperation with government and payment of necessary taxes and levies.<br /> <br /> “This begins from doing the right things and at the right time. Dear people of Ogun State let me assure you all that this New Year will bring us greater development.<br /> <br /> “This means we must be further prepared, more than ever before. But he said the church could not do so for other IDPs for lack of resources adequate resources.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> The Veterinary Medicine Association of Nigeria had previously donated four specially bred bulls to the internally displaced persons at Damare Camp for the celebration of Christmas and Eid el Mouloud by the Christian and Muslim faithful respectively, who were accommodated in the camp following their escape from the dens of Boko Haram insurgents earlier in 2015.<br /> <br /> At the Malkohi Camp, one of the IDPs, Miss Fatima James, recalled that the previous year when political activities were in top gear.<br /> <br /> Another IDP, Hajiya Maryam, said at the Damare Camp that unlike the previous year there was nothing for them during the just concluded Christmas.<br /> <br /> She said: “By this time last year (2014), there were many cows in this camp for IDPs. But this Christmas, nobody brought anything to us. We are celebrating Christmas on empty stomachs. Only the NGOs are helping us here at the camp.”<br /> <br /> Veterinary doctors in Adamawa State also lent helping hands by donating cows to the IDPs. The President of the Veterinary Doctors Association, Dr Edgar Amos, who made the donation at the camp, told newsmen that the cows were donated to identify with the displaced persons and enable them celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ.<br /> <br /> He noted that insurgency had affected all sections of the society, “including our association. We lost two of our members to Boko Haram attacks. These cows were specially bred for the IDPs for the celebration of Christmas.”<br /> <br /> He said the association considered it necessary to identify with the displaced persons in celebrating the birthday of Jesus Christ along with other Nigerian Christians.<br /> <br /> According to him, what unites Nigerians irrespective of religious background are more fundamental than what divides them, saying that the interval in the celebration was not only coincidence but designed by God to Nigerians some lessons for them to continue to emphasize on unity in the country.<br /> <br /> The Nigeria Veterinary Doctors Medical Association, is the umbrella body of veterinary doctors in Nigeria and the mandate include the prevention, and control of animals diseases which are diseases that are common between man and animals.

You know usually when we have a change in pump price we go round to monitor compliance.<br /> <br /> “We have been to 10 filling stations and we are still going round to make sure that we cover as much as possible.<br /> <br /> “Good enough, in ‎all the stations we have visited, both majors and NNPC mega stations, there has been 100 per cent compliance.<br /> <br /> “But we shall go up to the outskirts because that is where our concern is. The challenge may likely be on the outskirts.<br /> <br /> “All those we have visited say they have received directive from their head offices. We are in touch with the leaderships of oil marketers in the country.<br /> <br /> “This is a nationwide exercise. All our staff are in the field across the country and we are doing this at depot level in conjunction with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR). They are also out to do a similar exercise because whenever we have a change in the downstream, all the regulatory agencies come out to ensure there is total compliance.<br /> <br /> “The law spelt out penalty where you have deviants to whatever directive is issued. Any deviant may lose the benefits of participating in Petroleum Support Fund Scheme, because we may withdraw such people from participating.<br /> <br /> “And since we are working in conjunction with DPR, your licence may be withdrawn, apart from other measures that we are likely going to take to ensure that Nigerians are not shortchanged.”<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, the PPPRA has approved importation of three million metric tonnes of petrol in the first quarter of the year.<br /> <br /> The NNPC was granted 78 per cent of the total volume for the period while the balance of 22 per cent will be supplied by other oil marketing companies.<br /> <br /> According to Farouk, a couple of elements that were affected by the price review include traders’ margin, which was revised downwards from N1.47 per litre to zero; lightering expenses (N4.07/litre to N2.00/litre) charges by the Nigerian Ports Authority (N0.77/litre to N0.36/litre); jetty throughput charges, (N0.80/litre to N0.40/litre); storage charge (N3.00/litre to N1.50/litre); bridging fund (N5.85/litre to N4.00/litre) and ex-depot price (N77.66/litre to N77.00/litre).<br /> <br /> Other elements, such as retailers’ margin, were, however, reviewed upwards from N4.60/litre to N5.00/litre; transporters from N2.99/litre to N3.05/litre; dealers’ margin from N1.75/litre to N1.95/litre.“<br /> <br /> Accordingly, the ex-depot price of PMS shall be N77.00k per litre while the pump price shall be N86.50k per litre – in line with the prevailing market trend.

So far, more than half of those in Jonathan’s cabinet will not get severance package.<br /> <br /> “If they had been paid in error, we would have asked them to refund the severance allowance.”<br /> <br /> Sources also said yesterday that some of the new 36 ministers inherited decrepit portfolios.<br /> <br /> The situation varies from ministry to ministry.<br /> <br /> In some ministries,ministers met no official vehicles, while in others, the treasuries were practically empty with no imprest to meet basic needs.<br /> <br /> It was gathered that many of the ministers are finding it difficult to operate because their predecessors stripped the ministries of basic tools to work with.<br /> <br /> Investigation revealed that some ministers have no official vehicles because their predecessors sold same to themselves in line with what they called “monetization” policy.<br /> <br /> Others appropriated government vehicles since their severance package was not paid.<br /> <br /> A highly-placed source said: “There is a case of a female minister who is using her personal SUV as official vehicle. Also, she has provided the pilot vehicles too in her convoy.<br /> <br /> “Another minister went to the National Assembly to clarify some issues and what was left as official vehicle in bad shape broke down.<br /> <br /> “We have the case of another minister who went away with 10 vehicles of his ministry and parastatals. The ministry had to write him to return some of the vehicles when the minister was adamant.<br /> <br /> “There is no minister without one story or the other to tell. All of them have no imprest to meet basic needs in their ministries. Most ex-ministers left nothing in the treasuries.”<br /> <br /> The spokesman for the Jonathan cabinet, ex-Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Olanrewaju Suleiman, said: “To the best of my knowledge, most ministers returned their official vehicles. The necessary handover procedures were fully complied with.<br /> <br /> “If there is any issue in a ministry, you can bring it up and we will crosscheck the facts for you.<br /> <br /> “It is also true that some of the former ministers will not get severance package because they did not stay in office for two years.<br /> <br /> “And as for those entitled to severance package, not all of them have been paid.
