Captain Riyad Mahrez scored as Algeria defeated Tunisia 2-0 in an international friendly this weekend to create a record 27-match unbeaten run by an African national team.
An Ivory Coast side that included Yaya and Kolo Toure and Didier Drogba set a 26-match benchmark in 2013, and Algeria began their remarkable run by winning 4-1 away to Togo five years later.
Popularly known as the Desert Foxes, the north Africans set the record by winning 20 matches, drawing seven, scoring 58 goals and conceding 17. 
They faced 24 opponents from Africa plus Mexico, Colombia and Qatar, played nine matches at home, six away and 12 at neutral venues.  
Facing Tunisia away was a huge challenge as reigning African champions Algeria sought to overtake the mark set by the Ivorian ‘golden generation’.
The Tunisians are ranked second in Africa, two places above Algeria, had home advantage and took a 12-match unbeaten run into the north African showdown.
But Algerian fears that they might trip at the final hurdle were soon allayed as Qatar-based Baghdad Bounedjah and Manchester City winger Mahrez scored within 28 minutes of the kickoff. 
Rattled after conceding twice, there was no way back for the hosts against an Algerian defence marshalled by Aissa Mandi and Djamel Benlamri.
The centre-backs were among eight starters in Rades who also began the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal in Cairo, which Algeria won 1-0 through a Bounedjah goal.
AC Milan midfielder Ismail Bennacer missed the wins over Mauritania, Mali and Tunisia this month due to a foot injury that required surgery.
Right-back Mehdi Zeffane and midfielder Adlene Guedioura were the other absentees and Youcef Atal, Ramiz Zerrouki and Haris Belkebla took their places.
Guedioura did come off the bench during the second half only to be red-carded two minutes from the end of regular time.
The line-up was composed exclusively of Algerians based in Europe and the Middle East, including three playing in France and two in Qatar while Mahrez the sole English Premier League representative.
Having broken the African record, coach Djamel Belmadi can now adjust his sights to the 36-match world mark set by then world champions Brazil in 1996.
Algeria are scheduled to play back-to-back 2022 World Cup qualifiers in September, October and November in a group that includes Djibouti, Burkina Faso and Niger.
The toughest of the six fixtures should be the visit to Burkina Faso, who defeated Algeria the last time the countries met in a World Cup qualifier in Ouagadougou. 
Algeria will then defend the Cup of Nations title from January 9 in Cameroon, where they hope to become the first country since Egypt in 2010 to successfully defend the title.

Security operatives on Saturday disrupted with tear gas canisters the peaceful June 12 protest.
The protesters, who assembled demanded an end to what they called ‘bad governance’.
The police were already positioned at the various venues before the protesters marched into the park.
The protesters brandished different placards with inscriptions including, “Buhari must go”, “Revert electricity tariff now”, “End Bad Government”.

The Nigerian Police actualised their vow to stop any form of June 12 protests by pro-democracy groups on Saturday.
In Abuja, police fired teargas at peaceful protesters, who had gathered at Gudu market area.
In Ibadan, police challenged the protesters, fired teargas at them and destroyed placards.
The protesters, undeterred burst into songs: “Another challenge, double double challenge”.

The protesters in Abuja gathered around 8:30 am to express their displeasure over the state of the nation were dispersed with tear-gas.
The protesters, chanting “Buhari must go”, “Say no to injustice”, amongst other solidarity phrases, scampered for safety when the security operatives started shooting.
In Lagos, although there was police presence at Lekki Toll Gate, scene of the EndSARS rebellion in October, peaceful protesters gathered in Ojota.
There was also peaceful protest in Akure, capital of Ondo state.

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that during his days in the Nigerian Army, he was ready to pay the ultimate price for the betterment of the country.
Buhari who stated this in his speech on Saturday to mark the 2021 Democracy Day, expressed optimism that the country would surmount the current security and economic challenges bedeviling it.
According to him, his administration is working hard to ensure that the killings in many part of the country come to an end.
He appreciated Nigerians for their support and patience despite the challenges, stressing that the country will come out of the challenges stronger.

Ahead of the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, some youths in Benin, Edo State on Friday evening took to the streets to protest against alleged poor security situation in the country.
The angry youths blocked the ever busy First East Circular Road, by Akpakpava Junction, with used tyres, thereby slowing down vehicular traffic.
One of the protesters was heard saying that the road blockade is just the prelude to Saturday’s mass protest.
He warned that no police or security organization would be able to stop them from walking round the city, adding that it is their fundamental human right.

It was reliably gathered that thousands of youths, including students, have vowed to stage a peaceful protest around the city.
Recall that many students, youths and secession agitators have vowed to stage mass protests across the country, on June 12, to express their displeasure over government’s way of handling things.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday morning, addressed Nigerians to mark the 2021 Democracy Day celebration.
The speech reads in full, “I join you all today to commemorate and celebrate our Democracy Day. It is a celebration of freedom and a victory for one people, one country and one Nigeria.
“As with all democracies we will always be going through improvement processes in our desire to reach the goal of a mature democracy, a strong, evolved and integrated nation state to be reckoned with globally.
“In the last two years we have witnessed and overcome a good number of testy challenges that would have destroyed other nations especially relating to our collective security.

“The indefatigable CAN DO Spirit of the Nigerian has sustained us and would keep pushing us to put these challenges behind us.
“Unfortunately some of these challenges came in the shape of violent outrages leading to the loss of lives of many of our dear compatriots and the destruction of some of our infrastructure, including those devoted to improving our democratic processes.
“Once again, I want to render my sincere and heart-felt condolences to the families and friends of our gallant service men and women who lost their lives in the line of duty and as a sacrifice to keep Nigeria safe.
“I extend the same condolence to the families and friends of our country men, women and children who were unfortunate victims of such senseless arsons, kidnappings and murders.
“I also share the pains of families and direct victims of ransom-seeking, kidnaped victims who went through unimaginable trauma in the course of their forced imprisonment.
“Let me assure my fellow citizens that every incident, however minor gives me great worry and concern and I immediately order security agencies to swiftly but safely rescue victims and bring perpetrators to justice.
Fellow Nigerians,
“When you elected me as your President in 2015, you did so knowing that I will put an end to the growing insecurity, especially the insurgency in the North East, but the unintended consequences of our scattering them in the North East pushed them further in-country which is what we are now facing and dealing with.
“We will, by the Grace of God put an end to these challenges too.
“Unfortunately, like in most conflict situations, some Nigerian criminals are taking undue advantage of a difficult situation and profiteering therefrom with the misguided belief that adherence to the democratic norms handicaps this Administration from frontally and decisively tackling them.
“We are already addressing these obstacles and we will soon bring some of these culprits to justice.
“We are, at the same time addressing the twin underlying drivers of insecurity namely poverty and youth unemployment.
“Interventions led by Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria driving economic growth over the past 6 years are targeted mostly to the agricultural, services, infrastructure, power and health care sectors of the economy.
“In the Agricultural sector, for instance, the Anchor Borrowers Programme resulted in sharp decline in the nation’s major food import bill from $2.23billion in 2014 to US$0.59billion by the end of 2018.
“Rice import bill alone dropped from $1 billion to $18.5 million annually.
“This initiative supported local production of rice, maize, cotton and cassava. Government financed 2.5 million small-holder farmers cultivating about 3.2 million hectares of farmland all over the country and created 10 million direct and indirect jobs.
“Several other initiatives, namely AgriBusiness/Small and Medium Enterprise Investment Scheme, the Non-oil Export stimulation Facility, the Targeted Credit Facilities operated across the 774 Local Governments.
“In the manufacturing sector the CBN – BOI N200 billion facility financed the establishment and operations of 60 new industrial hubs across the country, creating an estimated 890,000 direct and indirect jobs.
“The CBN’s N50 billion Textile Sector intervention Facility increased capacity utilization of ginneries from 30% to nearly 90%.
“The Economic Sustainability Plan – our rebound plan for the COVID-19 pandemic developed in 2020 is currently being executed. The plan is primarily focused on the non-oil sector, which has recorded phenomenal growth contributing over 90% to the GDP growth in Q1 2021.
“Though marginal we have recorded GDP growth over two quarters; Q2 2020 and Q1 2021. This is evidence of a successful execution of the ESP by the Federal Government.
“My vision of pulling 100 million poor Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years has been put into action and can be seen in the National Social Investment Programme, a first in Africa and one of the largest in the world where over 32.6m beneficiaries are taking part. We now have a National Social register of poor and vulnerable households, identified across 708 local government areas, 8,723 wards and 86,610 communities in the 36 States and the FCT.
“Our conditional cash transfer program has benefited over 1.6 million poor and vulnerable households comprising more than 8 million individuals. This provides a monthly stipend of N10,000 per household.
“I have also recently approved the National Poverty Reduction with Growth Strategy Plan that augments existing plans to further reduce poverty in Nigeria.
“As at the end of 2020, the Development Bank of Nigeria had disbursed 324 billion Naira in loans to more than 136,000 MSMEs, through 40 participating Financial Institutions. I am to note that 57% of these beneficiaries are women while 27% are the youth.
“We are able to do all these and still accelerate our infrastructure development through sensible and transparent borrowing, improved capital inflow, improving and increasing revenue through capturing more tax bases and prudent management of investment proceeds in the Sovereign Wealth Fund.
Fellow Nigerians,
“Our infrastructure revolution continues with key projects attaining critical milestones under the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund; The Second Niger Bridge, The Lagos- Ibadan Expressway and the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway.
“I have also approved the establishment of Infraco Plc, a world-class infrastructure development vehicle wholly focused on Nigeria with a capital structure of N15 trillion.
“The rail system is not left out as the Itakpe-Warri standard gauge rail was completed and commissioned 33 years after construction began. The Lagos-Ibadan double track railway line which I have just commissioned has commenced operations.
“We are focused on ensuring that our infrastructure drive is key to economic growth and one that can be felt by every Nigerian. Building critical infrastructure in our ports is also opening up opportunities for the Nigerian economy.
“My approval for 4 new seaports using a Public-Private-Partnership approach is hinged on growing the Nigerian economy. These four sea ports; Lekki Deep Sea Port, Bonny Deep Sea Port, Ibom Deep Sea Port and Warri Deep Sea port will create massive job opportunities and foreign investment inflows.
“We have worked at deepening our Eastern ports leading to success like having three container ships berth at Calabar port, a first in 11 years. Similarly, on October 30 2019, an LPG tanker operated by NLNG berthed in Port Harcourt, the first time an LPG ship is berthing at any of the Eastern Ports.
“As we invest in these new assets, we have also made strides in ensuring that they are secured and protected. In this regard I am also pleased to note the launch of the NIMASA Deep Blue project – which is an Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure that I recently commissioned. This initiative is designed to add to the layer of security we have to safeguard our maritime sector.

“We were able to ensure that the various lockdown measures did not impact too negatively on the ability of ordinary Nigerians to continue sustaining their livelihoods.
“During the pandemic, we disbursed N5,000 to 1 million Nigerians using a Rapid Response Register and advanced N20,000 to 750,000 beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer Progamme and provided 1.37 million Nigerians with palliatives from CACOVID.
“At the same time the Federal Government released 109,000 metric tonnes of food reserve stocks and 70,000 metric tonnes of grains to the poor and vulnerable in all 36 states of the federation.
“In addition, Government reduced interest rates from 9% to 5% for struggling businesses and extended credit facilities to 548,345 beneficiaries.

“When this administration decided to change our Democracy Day from 29th May to June 12th in my first tenure, it was not only to honour the sacrifices of the men and women of our country who fought for the return to democracy but also to demonstrate our commitment to satisfy the aspirations of the people and creating an environment for democracy to be an accepted way of life.
“As your President, I remain committed to providing an enabling environment for a free, fair and credible electoral system under my tenure.
“However, you need to play your part by getting involved at any level you can supporting a democratic system that works for all and not for a section or a select few and demand accountability from your elected leaders.
“My commitment to bequeathing a sustainable democratic culture remains resolute, my pursuit of a fair society remains unshaken and my desire to see that Nigeria remains a country for each and every one of us has never been stronger.
“In responding to the challenges that this period imposes on us, Government also recognises the need to acknowledge notions of marginalisation and agitations for constitutional amendments among various segments of our population.
“While this government is not averse to constitutional reform as part of our nation building process, everyone must understand that the primary responsibility for constitutional amendments lies with the National Assembly.
“This body which, as I said, is the arm of government responsible for constitutional changes has concluded the preliminary stages of amending and improving our constitution in a way that the majority of Nigerians will be happy with.
“Government is, however, willing to play a critical role in the constitutional amendment process without usurping the powers of the National Assembly in this regard.
“As a nation we have come very far from where we started and we are getting incrementally closer to where we ought to be.
“Overcoming the present challenges is but one of a necessary process that we have to undergo as a nation so that we can come out stronger. The day I joined the Nigerian Army I was prepared to lay down my life for Nigeria.
“As your President I remain ever committed to upholding and defending Nigeria’s Corporate existence.
“In adhering to the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy notably section 14(2)(b) I shall do all within my power to ensure that the Security and welfare of the people remain the primary purpose of government.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that in the last two years, his administration lifted 10.5 million people out of poverty.
Buhari in his Democracy Day speech said those lifted out of poverty were farmers, small-scale traders, artisans and market women.

As the nation celebrates June 12 as Democracy Day, Governor Dapo Abiodun has urged residents of Ogun State not to join any protest.
Gov Abiodun feared that resorting to protest could breed violence, saying such protests could be hijacked by those he called hoodlums and enemies of democracy, harbouring ulterior motives.
In a statement made available to newsmen by his new media aide, Emmanuel Ojo, the governor charged Ogun people to celebrate June 12 peacefully.
This, he said, became necessary to avoid any act that could threaten the security of the State and the nation at large.

According to the statement signed by Abiodun’s Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, it was stated that “June 12 is a day for the celebration of democracy and “we should not do anything to tarnish the day and what it stands for.”
He noted that, “M.K.O Abiola, the symbol of June 12 celebration abhorred violence.”
Meanwhile, some individuals are already mobilizing for the protest scheduled to commence on Saturday morning.
Our correspondent gathered that the protesters from the three senatorial districts of Ogun State have agreed to converge on the NUJ Secretariat, Iwe-Iroyin, Abeokuta by 7am.

Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) has celebrated veteran comedian, Chief Chika Okpala, popularly known as Chief Zebrudaya (ZB) alias 4.30, for using his craft to promote unity in the country.
Okpala, who is also a National Ambassador of POCACOV, turned 71 on June 10.
The National Coordinator of POCACOV, CSP Ebere Amaraizu, in Enugu on Friday said that Okpala was worth celebrating at 71 for his contribution in using his comedy craft for positive social engineering.
“We at POCACOV with our numerous stakeholders join others to felicitate the TV comedy series mogul of the famous ‘New Masquerade,’ Chief Zebrudaya.

“POCACOV wishes him continual health of mind and body and more inputs to the society,” Amaraizu said.
According to him, Chief ZB as he is fondly called used his comic attribute to unite people, create peace and above all remain a shining example for the youth.
“ZB’s comedy craft and disciplined lifestyle have been a great motivation to young minds on self-discovery and strategic leadership direction going by his comedy history lasting for five decades.
“He has played an immense role in the propagation of the message of peace and love from POCACOV and for the young minds to see the positive potential in them and to make use of it.
“We in POCACOV enjoin young minds to tap into the legacies of Chief Zebrudaya by remaining law-abiding by saying No to Cultism and Other Vices,” he said.

Activist and Convener of civil society organisation, Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, says there is no going back on the planned June 12 protest by his group.
According to him, protest is the language understood by  President Muhammadu Buhari.
He spoke on Friday morning, when he featured on AIT ‘Kakaaki’ programme.
Adeyanju flayed the President for saying that EndSARS protesters planned to remove him from office last October when the campaigners staged demonstrations against police brutality and extrajudicial killings.

It was earlier reported that the President during an Arise TV interview on Thursday alleged that the #EndSARS protest was to remove him from office.
When asked a question, Buhari had said, “This question was answered last year when there was the #EndSARS protest. You remember the young people that wanted to march here and remove me?”
But speaking on Friday, Adeyanju said the aim of the protest by his group is not to topple the government, adding that only the National Assembly has the powers to remove the President from office.
The activist said, “The issues we are protesting against are very germane, they are about insecurity, internet shutdown, we don’t want another increment in fuel price because that is what they are planning. Again, the prices of food in the market is unbelievable.”
Continuing, he said, “If the President of a nation can be saying that people who are were protesting wanted to remove him from office, it calls the question as to the kinds of people advising the President. If you have someone like (the Minister of Justice Abubakar) Malami around, you should expect the worst, you should expect those kinds of things that the President was saying.
“Are we (protesters), parliamentarians? Only the National Assembly can remove the President from office. So, the President should disabuse his mind from that. These sycophants in government are his real enemies, critics are not his enemies.
“We are not criticising to mock the government. We are not protesting because we like to protest; we will like to be in our homes, or our offices…
“The reason why we are doing it (protesting) is because this is the language that Buhari understands.”
When asked whether the President truly understands protest as a language, Adeyanju said, “He does; when he was speaking yesterday (Thursday), he was speaking from a position of anger. This (protest) is the language he understands, this is the language all politicians understands.
Adeyanju further said that the President, who was “a protester” and “an activist” should respect the fundamental right of assembly and protest, adding that June 12 signifies struggle for freedom.
“June 12 signifies struggle for the emancipation of the country. It wasn’t just about the election of MKO Abiola and the struggles thereafter which led to the unfortunate death of Comrade Kudirat Abiola and several others. The essence of choosing June 12 is so that people can relate with the struggle, that the spirit of the struggle is not dead,” the activist added.
Buhari had in June 2018 directed the nation’s Democracy Day to hold on June 12 of every year as against the previous arrangement where the ceremony was held on May 29. The announcement was perceived to be in honour of the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12 Presidential election, which was annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has suspended its planned June 12 nationwide protest.
NANS President, Sunday Asefon, made this known in a statement on Friday morning.
It was titled, ‘NANS Suspends June 12 Protest Over Concerns About Safety Of Protesters And Fear Of Possible Hijack By Politicians – Comrade Sunday Asefon’.
According to the NANS president, the planned protest was aimed at decrying the insecurity in the country, especially the serial abductions of students.

However, Asefon said some politicians with “different agenda” have perfected plans to hijack the protest to “ventilate their political opinions and sentiments”.
He also said the students’ body was not associated with the secessionist campaign or the ‘Buhari-must-go’ campaign slated to hold on Saturday by some politicians and activists.
He said, “Having considered the current security realities and the danger to the lives of our members in case of possible hijack of the planned protest, I in consultation with all the structures of NANS, therefore, announce the suspension of our proposed protest for June 12. 
“The suspension of the protest is necessary to avoid a clash of interest and clash with security agencies that are on red alert to protect the nation’s infrastructure from security breaches on the proposed date as a result of many other protests slated for the date.
“We intend to protest for better security and improved welfare for our students, we must therefore not put the life of any of our students at risk to ventilate our grievances.”
Asefon further noted that the protest was not cancelled but postponed, adding that a new date would be announced for the demonstration.

Controversial crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, who is more popular as Bobrisky, has cried out over the side effects of the cosmetic surgery he allegedly underwent recently.
The 28-year-old claimed he would be undergoing the procedure to help him have a more feminine body.
However, Bobrisky has now said he “wants his life back”, as he has been sleeping in one position for days.
According to him, “the pain is out of this world”.

Veteran Nigerian singer and Human right activist, Onyeka Onwenu has told President Muhammadu Buhari to withdraw troops deployed to the South East.
She urged Buhari to rather dialogue with secessionist agitators and youths in the region to stop killings.
Onwenu, speaking at a press conference organized by the Credible Igbo Women Initiative, CIWI, in Lagos, expressed concerns over the wanton killings in Igboland.
She said, “Something dreadful is happening in south east right now. I happened to come from Imo state and I know what people are passing through there. Please, federal government should stop the killings.

“Some people want to agitate for referendum, it is their right. Some people want to cry out that they are being marginalized, it is their right. Listen to them. You may not agree with them, but they have the right to speak.”
She appealed to the Nigerian government to talk to aggrieved parties and youths in the South East region, adding that Igbo people had the right to agitate.
“We are begging, we are asking, please let us sit down and talk about what is going on. Let’s call our people who are agitating, who are not happy with the situation and talk to them. Nigerian government let’s talk. Pull out the troops from Igboland,” she stated.
Onwenu also appealed to the youths to embrace dialogue with the government.
“I also want to use this opportunity to reach out to our young people to embrace dialogue. Please, come let’s talk. We will stand for the right of Igbo people”, Onwenu pleaded.

Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, has confirmed he has one year left on his current contract with the club.
Pogba also claimed he had not been offered a new deal by the Premier League side.
“I have one year left on my contract, everybody knows it.
“I know that the club is … well there has not been yet a concrete offer,” Pogba told a press conference.

Special Adviser to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has revealed his reason for hating the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Adesina in a statement on Thursday, said he hated the party prior to his appointment with President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
The presidential media aide who was reacting to the defection of the Cross River Governor, Ben Ayade from PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, said the opposition party “was too much of buccaneering”.
Adesina said he was full of happiness when the governor announced his decision to dump the PDP for the ruling APC.
<a name='more' id="more"></a>Recall that Ayade had on May 20, formally defected to the ruling party shortly after meeting with about six APC governors who visited him at the Government House in Calabar the state capital.
According to Adesina, “Yes, I’ve never really liked the PDP because I felt there was too much of buccaneering in the party, but I’d always been honest enough to give some governors in the fold of thee party who were doing well their dues.
“I always mentioned Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State (he was still in PDP then), Danjuma Goje of Gombe State, and some others. They stood out for the good works in their states”.

Many prominent Nigerians have continued to defy the ban on micro-blogging and social media platform, Twitter, despite the threat by the Nigerian government to prosecute Nigerians still posting or using the microblogging site.
Last Friday, President Muhammadu Buhari-led government announced the indefinite suspension of Twitter’s operations in Nigeria over what it termed, “the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.”
The suspension came days after Twitter deleted a controversial tweet by Buhari where he made reference to the 1967 civil war.
Amid the public outcry and criticism that greeted the government’s Twitter suspension, the Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, Abubakar Malami, on Saturday ordered the prosecution of violators of the ban.

Nigerians had immediately opted for Virtual Private Networks (VPN) in a bid to access the platform, daring the police to arrest them and prosecute them.
VPN, a key path for digital anonymity, has enabled Nigeria to trend in different parts of the world.
It was  gathered that issues relating to Twitter ban in Nigeria have become popular in free VPN locations, especially in the United States, Netherlands, Canada and Ireland.
Just two days ago, ‘Nigeria, ‘TB Joshua, ‘June 12 protest, ‘Buhari, ‘werey, ‘Oyo, ‘Igbo trended in Netherlands, America, Canada and some other countries.
Interestingly, some Governors have been using VPN to access Twitter. Among those yet to comply with Buhari’s order are the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State and Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
Although some Governors who were active before the suspension have complied with the directive, the accounts of others who rarely use the platform have remained dormant as usual.
Governor Makinde had, while calling on the Government to rescind the decision, said many would be rendered jobless.
He counselled Buhari not to hamper the operations of thousands of businesses and services, maintaining that the ban is capable of affecting investors’ confidence in the country.
He, however, called for due consideration of the Government due to the implications of its action.
Lending his voice to condemn the ban, Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State tweeting via his official handle, said the ban was illegal.
According to him, it is also an ill-advised move to divert the attention of Nigerians from the FG’s failure to tackle insecurity in parts of the country.
He noted that the ban amounts to suppression of fundamental human rights and gagging of social media.
Similarly, El-Rufai, a leading member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, tweeted despite the existing order by the Federal Government.
El-Rufai used the banned social media platform to tweet what seems like support for the Federal Government, saying, “Based Nigeria: African country teaches US lesson in how to handle Big Tech tyranny — RT Op-ed.”
However, when our correspondent reached Ortom’s Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, to comment on why his principal didn’t obey the FG’s Twitter ban directive and why he described it as illegal, the CPS said the answer was in the governor’s tweet.
Akase said, “The answer was in the question you asked.
“Even the governor’s tweet and statement we issued, the answer is there.
“So read our statement and the governor’s tweet, you will have the answer there,” he added.

The Chairman House Committee on Youth Development, Mr Yemi Adaramodu has given assurance that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme would not be scrapped.
Adaramodu gave the assurance at the unveiling of nine books on NYSC and a maiden NYSC film to commemorate the 48th anniversary of the scheme in Abuja on Thursday, NAN reports.
He said that sponsoring a bill on scraping the scheme should not rattle the agency because any member has the right to sponsor bill at the National Assembly.
“But the Speaker, the rest of us, the leadership of the house believe in the scheme and the scheme has come to stay in Nigeria.

“So the scheme is going nowhere, nobody is scrapping it.
“I want to tell you that we are behind you, we are with you, we are for you, once you see us here, you should know that we are together and we are fully with you.
“Mr Speaker even said that I should felicitate the D-G and his team for this task and that he is very interested in getting the books,” Adaramodu said.
Prof. Okpeh Okpeh, President, Historical Society of Nigeria, while reviewing the books, said that he particularly liked the one titled ‘NYSC (1973-2020): Emergence, Growth and Development.’
He said that this was because even with the poor reading culture of Nigerians, the pictures that accompanied the write up were sure to attract people and encourage them to read.
Okpeh said that the scheme might not be putting money in the coffers of the Federal Government but the national integration it fosters can not be over emphasised.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced plan to launch its digital currency before end of this year. The apex bank has also intensified efforts through awareness fair for easy access to its various intervention fund.

The decision on digital currency was a major outcome of yesterday’s Bankers’ Committee Meeting, where it also assured of adequate foreign exchange supply to meet all legitimate transactions through Deposit Money Banks.
 
The Director of Information Technology of the apex bank, Mrs. Rakiya Mohammed, along with several banks’ Managing Directors disclosed this via a zoom press briefing after the Bankers’ Committee meeting.
 
According to her, “officials of CBN have been exploring the digital currency technology for over two years. There are two types of currency, the notes and coins. The CBN digital currency will be a third type of currency. It will supplement the cash. Rather than carry cash about, you have the money in your phone.”
 
She also explained that the most recent EFInA (Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access) report indicated that the nation was at about 60 per cent in financial inclusion and that with a target of 80 per cent at the end of the year, steps needed to be taken to raise the percentage of the nation’s financial inclusion.
 
She argued that the proposed CBN digital currency would enhance the inclusion drive and reduce the cost of cash management, while enabling innovations in the nation’s financial market.
 
Mohammed stated: “The digital currency would be accessible to all Nigerians. Just like everybody has access to cash, everybody will have access to the central bank’s digital currency. Let me state categorically that cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin and the rest of them are not under the control of the central bank; they are purely private decisions that individuals make.”
In her remarks, Mrs. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, said that CBN assured the bankers’ committee of its readiness to provide sufficient foreign exchange for all those who had genuine need through the banks.

Motorists and commuters plying the Eko Bridge, Lagos State, have lamented increasing attacks by armed robbers on them.

It was gathered that while robbers broke into cars and commercial vehicles in broad daylight and dispossessed people of their valuables, the police were nowhere to be found.
Journalists who spoke to victims and eyewitnesses, learnt that residents now preferred to take longer routes to get to their destinations due to the robberies.
A businesswoman, Opeyemi Adegbola, said she was robbed on Wednesday around 2.30pm by hoodlums, who were on a motorcycle.
She said, “I took Uber with my aunt while coming from the Lagos Island yesterday (Wednesday) and when we got to the Eko Bridge, there was traffic. It was raining, so the driver begged us that because he didn’t have much fuel, we should allow him to turn off the engine and we obliged, so we had to wound down the windows a little bit.
“After a while, we didn’t know where these guys came from; we just noticed that they got off the motorcycle and one of them pointed a gun at our driver and shouted at him to wound down the glass, while also threatening to shoot him.
“At first, it was like a movie to me; I didn’t know what was happening. The other guy went to the right side, where my aunt was sitting, and shouted at her to wound down and open the door. My aunt just quietly told me to hide my phone, so I hid it inside the car seat, pushed it down and sat on it.
“Before we knew what was going on, the guy opened his shirt, brought out a cutlass and smashed the glass in my aunt’s face. We were injured. The guy collected my aunt’s bag, asked her to remove her jewellery, wristwatch and ring, while the one with the gun came to my side and shouted that I should open the door; I opened the door and gave him my bag.
“He ransacked my bag; my ATM cards were inside, but he didn’t see them. The other phone that I used for business transactions was inside the bag, so he took it, put it inside his pocket, took the money inside the bag and threw the bag in the floodwater.”
The victim explained that the robbers moved to other vehicles to rob passengers after they were through with them.
She, however, noted that they were saved by a man, who drove with some escorts on the other side of the road.
Adegbola stated, “He (the man being escorted) stopped and shot in the air. When the robbers heard the gunshot, they took off. The escorts ran after them, but couldn’t catch up, because they didn’t know where they disappeared to.
“We didn’t see any policeman on the bridge; it was when the escorts shot in the air that some area boys came out to start looking for the robbers. After then, two police officers came on motorbikes and people booed them for coming after the robbers had gone.
“Those guys operated conveniently; there was no rush at all. They were going from one car to the other; nothing was stopping them, and the one with the cutlass was ready to harm anybody who dared to challenge him, so we had no choice but to surrender everything to them. I lost N20,000 and my phone to them.”
A journalist, who witnessed a robbery on the bridge on Monday, Tolulope Adeleru-Balogun, said the robbers attacked passengers of a commercial bus around 5pm.
Narrating the incident on her Twitter handle, Adeleru-Balogun said there was no security agent on the bridge while the incident lasted.
She tweeted, “I saw a bus getting robbed in front of me on Eko Bridge in broad daylight. One had gun, the other a brand new cutlass. Lagosians are sitting ducks on bridges across the city. My colleague was still trying to get some work done on his phone when a hawker stopped by my window and said drop your phone, they are robbing. Not less than two minutes later, they went after a white bus, slapped people, pulled out a cutlass, broke one of the back windows.
“The driver tried to manoeuvre, but everyone beside and behind him was trying to escape as well. They circled round and that’s when another brought out a gun. Passengers started jumping down, even passengers from a bus behind. They tried to go after a car too.
“Lagosians are on here everyday sharing robbery incidents, yet they are continuing unabated and gathering steam. It’s not safe to move around Lagos, day or night; there’s construction on the bridge leading to stadium affecting Eko Bridge; there is construction at Ogudu, affecting the Third Mainland Bridge. Who makes these decisions in a city such as this? There was no police presence the length of the bridge till we got to the exit of Costain, I saw three officers there.”
Another commuter, Olufemi Anthony, who was almost robbed by robbers on Monday, said he left his vehicle and ran for dear life when the robbers brandished different weapons.
He said, “The robbery on Monday was around 5pm. The boys robbed the driver of a Toyota Camry that was in front of me and out of frustration, the driver bashed my car. I didn’t bother to come down, because those guys came with shotguns and cutlasses. The most amazing thing was that a bank’s van with escorts on the same Eko Bridge could do nothing and everybody had to run for their lives. I left my vehicle and ran too.”
In a video that went viral on Wednesday, a woman, who was allegedly attacked by the robbers, could be seen crying in her car as she drove slowly.
The voice in the video could be heard saying the woman was attacked by robbers while in traffic, adding that the robbers had broken the side mirrors of several other vehicles.
A driver, who identified himself simply as Jide, revealed that the police had been reluctant since the #EndSARS protest to rescue citizens from such danger, adding that many of the policemen were retaliating the attacks on police stations during the protest.
“Since #EndSARS happened, the crime rate has been high. The security operatives have technically left us to ourselves. Some policemen have said since we say we didn’t want them, we can be on our own. They’re fighting back for what happened during the protest. We lack the needed security,” he said.
According to a motorist, Adeyinka Omoh, the police watch while people are being robbed.
He stated, “Even if you’re being robbed in front of the police, they won’t answer if you call them. Hoodlums usually rob people on the bridge when the traffic is intense. They make sure that the other side of the road is free before they start their operation. They park a motorcycle on the other free lane to ease their escape after robberies.
“The bridge starts from Alaka to Apogbon. I don’t think the people they chased from under the bridge are the culprits. These notorious boys have chosen it as a full-time job.”
The state Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the police were not aware of the attacks on the bridge.
According to him, construction works are ongoing at the end of the Eko Bridge, involving Costain, Alaka and Iponri areas.
Odumosu said this was partly responsible for the traffic on the bridge, adding that the command usually deployed personnel in mufti on the road during peak periods.
“I don’t have complaints of that (incessant attacks). I don’t have complaints like you called incessant. But I know that I have deployed my men on the Eko Bridge. If there is any information, we will double our efforts to protect everyone,” the CP stated.
However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said later in a statement that the police raided some flashpoints in the state, including Agege, Seven-Up, Ojota, Surulere and Eko Bridge, and arrested 19 suspected traffic robbers.
“The RRS team, led by the Commander, CSP Yinka Egbeyemi, in the process hit notorious flashpoints in Agege, Seven-Up cum Ojota area, and Surulere to Eko Bridge, where notorious traffic robbers and miscreants had been terrorising innocent motorists and commuters, and arrested 19 suspected traffic robbers. The operation is ongoing and we are currently mounting surveillance on the Eko Bridge.”

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York has announced it is sending three artefacts back to Nigeria.

CNN reported that two of the works, a pair of 16th-century Benin Court brass plaques of a “Warrior Chief” and “Junior Court Official,” were donated to the museum in 1991 by the art dealer Klaus Perls and his wife Dolly.
The third, a 14th-century “Ife Head,” was recently offered to the museum for purchase by another collector.

According to the report, the museum decided to return the works after conducting research in collaboration with the British Museum, with input from the Nigerian National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM).
The two plaques had been part of a 153-piece collection of African royal treasures given to the museum by the Perlses 30 years ago.
Among the collection were brass figures, carved elephant ivory, masks, jewelleries and musical instruments.
According to the museum, the plaques were taken in 1897 from the Benin Royal Palace, by British military forces and then entered the British Museum’s collection.
Around 1950 or 1951, the London institution transferred them with 24 other items to the National Museum in Lagos.
The works were somehow removed from that museum “at an unknown date and under unclear circumstances,” the Met said in a press release.
They were sold on the international art market, where they were acquired by Perls. Both plaques have now been deaccessioned by the Met.
Several European museums have also been returning art treasures back to Nigeria.

The Federal Government is shopping for new loans to finance its Ibadan-Kano rail project which will cost about $11 billion.
The earlier impression was that China would provide the loans.

This was the assumption, especially since the China Civil Engineering Construction Corp (CCECC) has been contracted to construct the line, along with refurbishing the old Port Harcourt-Maiduguri narrow gauge.
But in Lagos at the flag-off of the Lagos-Ibadan segment of the Lagos-Kano line, President Buhari clearly hinted that his government is shopping for financing elsewhere.
Buhari said that the Federal Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Finance have been directed to vigorously seek financial agreements with appropriate co-financiers to partner with the Federal Government for the development of the Ibadan – Kano railway.
In an interview, Transport minister Rotimi Amaechi disclosed that government is discussing with the London-based Standard Chartered Bank Plc.
Unlike Buhari, he said government is shopping for funds for two rail line projects expected to cost about $14.4 billion.
Included is the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri narrow gauge line, which has been awarded to CCECC at a cost of $3billion.
“We’ve moved away from China in some of our projects. Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed is overseeing the talks with the emerging markets-focused financial institution about arranging the infrastructure loans,’’ Amaechi said.
 
In March, Amaechi disclosed that Nigeria borrowed about $2.5billion from China-Exim Bank for the Lagos-Ibadan rail.

The Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has said that the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) called off its strike too early without achieving its aim of financial autonomy of the judiciary.
The 64-day-old strike, the longest industrial action in the Nigerian judiciary was suspended on Wednesday, following a meeting between officials of the union and the National Judicial Council (NJC) led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Ibrahim Muhammad.
Courts are to re-open on June 14.
Speaking on Thursday, Mr Bartholomew Aguegbodo, the Chairman of the Ikeja branch of the NBA described the suspension of the industrial action by JUSUN as “not worth it”.

“Having sustained the strike for over two months, the question JUSUN should have asked when considering calling off the strike is what have we achieved?
“The strike meted untold hardships on lawyers and litigants alike. If you’re fighting a noble cause and you cannot sustain it, it is not worth commencing it.
“The period the strike was on was fruitless. JUSUN says it is suspending the strike and is giving the government three months to implement terms, we know after three months we won’t be able to call up another action.
“The calling off of the strike is quite unfortunate, nothing has been achieved so far and it is going to remain business as usual,” he said.
The NBA Ikeja Chairman noted that all over the world, there is no struggle that does not have a price and that the struggle for financial autonomy of the judiciary was not solely for JUSUN and the NBA.
Aguegbodo said that the corporate world also suffered from the non-financial autonomy of the judiciary.
He said that a more effective method would have been a joint action between JUSUN and other labour unions to press home the demands for judicial financial autonomy to the state governors.
JUSUN had begun a nationwide strike on Tuesday, April 6, when the union directed all its members across the federation to shut down all courts after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum earlier given over the failure of the government to implement the law.
A verdict of the Federal High Court in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, had in January 2014 held that financial autonomy for the judiciary is a constitutional provision that must be complied with by the executive branch of government.
On May 23, President Buhari signed into law the Executive Order to grant financial autonomy to the legislature and the judiciary across the 36 states of the country.
The order also mandates the Accountant-General of the Federation to deduct from source amount due to state legislatures and judiciaries from the monthly allocation to each state for states that refuse to grant such autonomy.
The Attorney General of the Federation Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, said Executive Order No. 10 of 2020 made it mandatory that all states of the federation should include the allocations of both the legislature and the judiciary in the first-line charge of their budgets.
According to the AGF: “A Presidential Implementation Committee was constituted to fashion out strategies and modalities for the implementation of financial autonomy for the State Legislature and State Judiciary in compliance with section 121(3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as Amended).”
The Nigeria Governors Forum said it will start implementing financial autonomy for the judiciary latest by May ending, a pledge that indicated that an end to the ongoing strike that has crippled the nation’s judiciary may be in sight.
The governors also called on striking members of the JUSUN to call off their two weeks old strike then.
The Chairman of the NGF, Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti, gave this assurance in an interview with journalists after meeting with “stakeholders” from the state judiciary and legislature at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Fayemi said the modalities for the implementation were worked out at the meeting held at the Presidential Villa.
According to him, the meeting, chaired by the Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari, was attended by the Solicitor-General of the Federation, representatives of the judiciary, Conference of Speakers and House of Representatives.
The first line charge status, which is being respected by the Federal Government in respect of the federal judiciary, entitles the state judiciaries to get funds due to them directly from the Federation Account.

The Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria is largely fuelled by youth unemployment, hunger and poverty, Nigeria’s President  Muhammadu Buhari has said.
Buhari said this in an interview with Arise TV.
The Nigerian leader said he believes his government has done a lot to fight the terrorists but the problem in the “North-East is very difficulty.”

The police in Imo have arrested a 40-year-old native doctor, Uzoamaka Ugoanyanwu, said to be the charms provider for members of Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).
The Commissioner of Police in Imo Mr Abutu Yaro, confirmed the arrest in statement signed by the command’s spokesman SP Bala Elkana.
The CP said the police also arrested nine suspects who took part in the attack on the country home of Gov. Hope Uzodimma.
Yaro said the breakthrough followed a painstaking investigation carried out by the command’s tactical units and urged criminal elements who are still in possession of Police arms to willingly return them.

The police with the support of the military, foiled a deadly attack on Police headquarters on Sunday and killed five members of the ESN.
They also raided ESN camp on Monday in Ikeduru council area and rescued a female police officer held captive.
“In consonance with the mandate given to the operatives of the command by IGP Alkali Usman to fish out all criminal elements in the state and restore normalcy, we have declared war on criminal elements.
“On June 8, at about 1630 hrs, tactical teams of the command through diligent and painstaking investigations, stormed Ukwuorji, Mbaitoli Local Government area, along Onitsha road and arrested one Ezeugo Ordu, a native of Ubachima, Omuma, Oru West LGA.
 “He confessed to being a member of IPOB/ESN and made useful statements to the Police as regards to the recent attacks on Police stations as well as the residence of Gov. Uzodinma.
“He further led operatives of the command to the IPOB/ESN camp, a bush close to Njaba River, 9 persons were arrested at the criminal hideout while planning another attack, assorted charms were recovered from them.
“However, two out of the 9 arrested in the hideout, Chinedu Nwakaire and Uzoamaka Ugoanyawu the native doctor, were identified to be part of the hoodlums that attacked the private residence of the governor recently,” he said.
“Furthermore, the CP reiterated the call on members of the IPOB/ESN, or any other criminal syndicate operating in the state, especially those who stole police arms and ammunitions to voluntarily surrender themselves to enable them get a ”soft landing”.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended its 65-day old strike with effect from Thursday, following an agreement reached between the union and the federal government.
Mr Abdullahi Yalwa, National Publicity Secretary of ASUP made this known to newsmen in Bauchi.
According to the statement, “the suspension of the strike action was for a period of three months, to enable the government complete the implementation of the issues contained in the Memorandum of Action signed with the Union.
“Following an appraisal of the report indicating the gradual implementation of the items contained in the Memorandum of Action signed between our Union and the Federal Government, the Union has resolved to suspend its 65 days old industrial action with effect from 10th June, 2021.

“The suspension is for a period of three months to enable the government complete the execution of the items contained in the Memorandum of Action signed with the Union from 27th April, 2021.”
The ASUP scribe, who revealed that certain demands had already been met by the federal government, said the Union considered the appeals made by the government, traditional rulers, chairmen of governing councils of federal Polytechnics and members of the public, among others, who showed interest in the matter.
“As part of the efforts communicated by the Federal Ministry of Education, certain items have been fulfilled like the reconstitution and inauguration of governing councils and visitation panels to Federal Polytechnics.
“We are made to believe that the release of funds for infrastructure revitalisation and minimum wage arrears is currently being processed.
“Other items include, the ongoing efforts at the review of the Scheme of Service and Conditions of Service for Polytechnics, as well as the commencement of work towards resolution of the issues around CONTISS 15 migration arrears for the lower cadre.
“We also acknowledge the recent passage of the Bill for the removal of the dichotomy against HND holders in the country.
“In reaching the decision to suspend the strike, our union took cognisance of the appeals made by the government, revered traditional stools in the country, members of the National Assembly, Chairmen of Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics and indeed members of the public, who all showed varied interests in the matter,” he said.
The publicity secretary further explained that it was the expectation of the union that the suspension of the action would provide an enabling environment for the government to fulfill other aspects of the memorandum.

Bode George, has said the silence of President Muhammadu Buhari on destructions of lives and property by suspected Fulani herdsmen in Igangan, Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State was suspicious.
The former Deputy National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated this in Lagos on Wednesday, in his State of the Nation’s address.
George said that it was disappointing that Buhari’s aide, who always react swiftly to criticism have also remained silent.
The PDP chieftain adde that it was dangerous that Buhari, being a Fulani man, refused to speak.

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s silence on the killings of people of Igangan community is dangerous and the fact that he is a Fulani man makes the matter worse.
“I know his media aids to be very fast in reacting to issues but their silence on this particular incident is very suspicious,” he said.
Bode George also pointed out that the killings by the Fulani herdsmen in the wee hours of last Sunday has brought the seething malady right to our doorsteps.

Nigeria’s Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.); Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, and former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, and others are set to meet on Thursday, June 10, 2021, in Abuja on the state of the nation.
The meeting would be held under the backing of Interfaith Initiatives for Peace.
The group, jointly led by Obasanjo, Sultan, Abdulsalami, and Onaiyekan, will be discussing “pressing issues” encumbering the country.
According to a letter addressed to the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ayuba Wabba, issues such as national unity, security, peace, integration, economic revitalisation, and development will be discussed at the meeting.

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr has revealed that their opening 2022 World Cup qualifier against Liberia will be played at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
This means Nigeria will return to the stadium where they hosted Lesotho in their last 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March.
It was the national team’s first competitive game in the country’s commercial capital in 20 years.
Uyo had been home to the Super Eagles for years, but they have not played at the Akwa Ibom Stadium since 2019.

They are now set to continue in Lagos, with Rohr confirming it after the friendly match against Cameroon.
“The fans are welcome, we hope that the fans can come to the stadium in September, that this crazy pandemic which is making things difficult for everybody will allow them to be with us,” Rohr said.
“We have to start well in Lagos in the Teslim Balogun stadium,” he added.
The 2022 World Cup qualifiers were initially scheduled to start in June, but CAF moved it to September as some countries’ host stadiums did not meet FIFA’s standards.

Governor Babbajide Sanwo-Olu is expected to receive the president for the commissioning of the project.

Johnson, who was military governor of Lagos between May 1967 and July 1975 died 30 October 2019.

Niger, Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso are collaborating to buy the unutilised power produced in Nigeria, the Chairman of the Executive Board of the West African Power Pool, Sule Abdulaziz, said on Wednesday.

Abdulaziz, who is also the acting Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, said the four countries were collaborating to make the power purchase from Nigeria through the Northcore Power Transmission Line currently being built.
 
He disclosed this at the WAPP meeting on the Northcore project in Abuja.
 
He said, “The power we will be selling is the power that is not needed in Nigeria.
 
“The electricity generators that are going to supply power to this transmission line are going to generate that power specifically for this project. So, it is unutilised power.”
 
He said Nigeria was expecting new generators to participate in the energy export for the 875km 330KV Northcore transmission line from Nigeria through Niger, Togo, Benin to Burkina Faso.
 
Abdulaziz said, “In addition, there are some communities that are under the line route, about 611 of them, which will be getting power so that there won’t be just a transmission line passing without impact.”
The WAPP chairman said the project, funded by World Bank, French Development Council and the African Development Bank, had recorded progress, adding that the energy ministers would be addressing security issues for the project at another meeting in Abuja.
 
He said, “Nigeria has the greatest advantage among these countries because the electricity is going to be exported from Nigerian Gencos (generation companies).
 
“So, from that, the revenue is going to be enhanced and a lot of people will be employed in Nigeria.”
 
The Secretary-General, WAPP, Siengui Appolinaire-Ki, said the cost of the project was about $570m, adding that part of the investment in each country would be funded by that particular nation.
 
He said countries in the partnership, including Nigeria, were also being supported by donors.
 
He said the funding agreement was ready as partner countries were awaiting the disbursements.
 
Appolinaire-Ki, however, said the donor agencies had said they needed a Power Purchase Agreement between the buying and the selling countries to be executed before releasing the fund.

Operators of minibuses in Owerri, the Imo State capital, have described the 14-day ultimatum given by the state government to paint their vehicles as wicked and insensitive.
The state government had, on Tuesday, mandated the commercial drivers to paint their vehicles in blue and white with two red lines running from the boot to the bonnet.
The order was issued through the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties, Chinasa Nwaneri.
The release had ordered the cab drivers in the state to go to the Ministry of Transport to do the necessary or risk losing their vehicles after the 14-day ultimatum.

A driver who spoke to newsmen said that the order is the height of wickedness on the side of the government. He said that the government should apply a human face in some of its policies because, according to him, times are hard.
“Maybe, the government has forgotten that the prevailing security situation also affected our work as commercial drivers.
“Because of fear of the unknown gunmen, no cab driver is making good money again. Everyone is running for their dear lives.
“Now tell me where the drivers will steal the money to be able to do the necessary thing within 14 days.
“The government is either insensitive or wicked to the cab drivers. Many of us are confused at this point,” he said.
“I appeal that the government extends the deadline to enable people to rally round for money to paint their vehicles because a good number of us have to borrow money to do that.”
Another driver who gave his name as George Alaegbu said that the order was for those who are easily cowed, not drivers like himself.
He added that he was ever ready for the taskforce till he gathers money to do the needful.
“I’m ready for the taskforce. I will slug it out with them anytime, any day. They should stop this wickedness.
“No responsible government would give its commercial cab operators 14 days to paint their vehicles in the prevailing security economic crisis.
“Governor Hope Uzodinma should add a human face in some of his policies because he is leading human beings and not animals.
“I am not saying that a state must not have its vehicle colour, but it shouldn’t be now that people are managing to survive,” he said.
“After all, the ministry of transport they referred us to, no longer has a commissioner. what kind of government is this!”
