At least 58 people were likely killed in a fire which engulfed a London tower block earlier this week, police said on Saturday.<br />

If that death toll is confirmed, it would make the Grenfell Tower blaze the deadliest in London since World War Two, Reuters reported.<br />
<br />
“Sadly at this time, there are 58 people who we have been told were in Grenfell Tower on the night that are missing and therefore sadly I have to assume that they are dead,” Commander Stuart Cundy told journalists.<br />
<br />
Cundy added that the figure could change. Police had previously put the death toll at 30.<br />
<br />
“The figure of 30 that I gave yesterday is the number that I know, sadly, have, at least, died. So that 58 would include that 30,” he said.<br />
<br />
Prime Minister Theresa May’s government earlier sought to quell anger over the fire, pledging to support the victims of the blaze after protesters jeered her when she visited local residents.<br />
<br />
May was rushed away from a meeting with residents on Friday under heavy police guard as protesters shouted “Shame on you” and hundreds stormed a local town hall calling for justice.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has admonished those beating drums of war through hate speeches and divisive statements to desist in the interest of the nation’s unity and safety.<br />

The minister gave the advise on Saturday at the “Lai Mohammed 10th Annual Ramadan Lecture” held in his country home, Oro, Kwara.<br />
<br />
Lai Mohammed expressed concerns over the rate of inflammatory statements capable of causing division and war in the country in recent times.<br />
<br />
He urged Nigerians to disregard those who were engaged in hate speeches as well as their purveyors.<br />
<br />
“In the last couple of months, we have witnessed the increase inflammatory and hate speeches.<br />
<br />
“Hate speeches have been responsible for wars. Rwandan genocide where more than 800,000 people were killed was started by hate speeches.<br />
<br />
“Like people say, wars are not really started by bullets, they are started by words of mouth.<br />
<br />
“Nigeria is too big and God has a purpose for making us one and we shall remain united.<br />
<br />
“There will be differences, but like the Yoruba says, “Ori bibe ko ni ogun ori fifo” (beheading is not antidote to headache).<br />
<br />
“We have been living together peacefully and we will continue to live together, because we have a lot to gain by being united.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
“If there is war today, none of us will escape whether you are young or old whether you are Yoruba, Igbo of Hausa ,” he said.<br />
<br />
The Minister recounted a story he said Acting President Yemi Osinbajo narrated on the dire consequences of the Rwanda war on two judges from that country.<br />
<br />
“The Acting President told us a story that in 1982, he was a young lecturer in the University of Lagos and two Supreme Court Judges came visiting from Rwanda.<br />
<br />
“He said ten years later, in 1992, he went to work in Rwanda and on the street with a bowl in hand looking for food were the Supreme Court Judges that he saw in Lagos.<br />
<br />
“This shows that when there is war, the young, the old, the rich and the poor, we are all victims,” he said.<br />
<br />
The Minister stressed that Nigerians must work together, understand their differences and must never pray for war.<br />
<br />
Mohammed thanked those who attended the lecture noting that their presence was key to its success.<br />
<br />
He said the Ramadan lecture, the tenth in the series, was unique because it’s attendance cuts across religions and denomination.<br />
<br />
The Minister explained that the presence of Christian faithfuls at the event was an indication that Nigerians, irrespective of their religious leaning, could work and live together.<br />
<br />
The Special Guest of honour at the event, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun said he was impressed with the turn out of people in their diversity at the event.<br />
<br />
The governor urged Muslim faithfuls to remain pious in the remaining days of Ramadan and pray for the unity of the country.<br />
<br />
Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara commended the Minister for organising the annual lecture.<br />
<br />
The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Information, Mahmud Ajeigbe said it was a great feat for the minister to have sustained the Ramadan lecture for 10 years.<br />
<br />
Earlier, the Guest Speaker, Sheikh Ibrahim Gidado from Lagos preached on piety especially during the Ramadan period.<br />
<br />
He charged the gathering on the need for people to have the fear of God in all their dealings and to be compassionate and show love to the less privileged.<br />
<br />
He also called for the support of Nigerians for the Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as well as their prayers for the President’s quick recovery.<br />
<br />
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Chief Imam of Oro, Mohammed Sanusi led other clerics at the event on prayers for the country, the President and his cabinet as well as the minister and his members of families.<br />
<br />
The lecture was attended by traditional rulers from Kwara, including Oloro of Oro, Oba Abdulrauf Oyelaran, Clerics, Muslim and Christian faithfuls, politicians, students and people from other walks of life

After New Zealand lost possession in a dangerous area, Poloz's neat touch released Glushakov, who clipped his finish over Marinovic and off the post before Boxall bundled the ball into his own net as he and Smith frantically tried to clear.<br />

New Zealand had a penalty claim for handball against Vasin turned down early in the second half, before Marinovic made a key double save at the other end - keeping out Poloz's powerful header and Aleksandr Erokhin's follow-up from close range.<br />
<br />
The New Zealand keeper made another great stop from Poloz after a swift Russia counterattack, while Samedov curled over from a free-kick as Russia looked to put the result beyond doubt.<br />
<br />
And Smolov sealed victory with 21 minutes remaining, finishing simply from six yards after starting a move that led to Boxall failing to clear Samedov's threatening right-wing cross.<br />

New Zealand had their first major chances when Ryan Thomas' powerful effort forced an impressive save from Igor Akinfeev and Smith's header from the resulting corner was hacked off the line by Yuri Zhirkov.<br />

He said, ”As the third tier of government, we should be recognised as such. Selecting people to rule us at the councils is giving us a setback. We should be given authority to elect our leaders.<br />
<br />
”The appointment of caretaker chairmen is illegal and should be abolished. The national electoral commissioners should conduct LG elections and not the states.”<br />
<br />
In his comment, the state Auditor, NULGE, Mr Johnbull Ogolas, said part of the autonomy sought by councils should include managing their resources.<br />
<br />
He said that the Works and Administration departments of various LGAs had been made redundant due to the absence of autonomy.<br />
<br />
The State Trustee of NULGE, Mr Clement Etifa, said through the rally, they were asking the Federal Government to consider the autonomy of local governments as a genuine demand to accelerate the growth and development of the councils.<br />
<br />
He also advocated the abolition of the Joint Account Allocation Committee to enable the finances of local governments to come directly to the councils instead of passing through the state governments.<br />
<br />
He said, ”The rally is to be held in all the 774 LGAs in the country. We are seeking Federal Government to grant us autonomy. We are by this rally, appealing to the Federal Government and state lawmakers that hold the power to amend the Constitution to do the needful.<br />
<br />
”We are saying that the resources accruing to the LGAs should come directly to the councils. The Joint Account Allocation Committee should be abolished to enable our finances to come directly to us.”<br />
<br />
He further said that salaries of councils’ employees were not paid as and when due because the LGAs were saddled with the responsibility of paying teachers’ salaries.<br />
<br />
He equally recommended the scrapping of state electoral commission.<br />
<br />
On his part, the NULGE Chairman in SILGA, Mr Erepadei Igali, contended that the welfare of workers at the third tier of government would only improve when the LGAs were granted autonomy.<br />
<br />
When he put the contentious issue of autonomy to vote, the workers voted resoundingly in favour of autonomy, saying it was the only way to liberate the LGAs across the country and to enable them to carry out their functions unhindered.<br />
<br />
Speaking on behalf of SILGA management of NULGE, Mr Diete Olotu said the demands of the workers were appropriate, urging the relevant authorities to address their concerns.</div>

The All Progressives Party, APC, Rivers state chapter has said that the Minister of Transport and leader of the party in the state, Rt. Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has not and will not stop nor even contemplate on preventing any member of the party from seeking any political office in the state because he (Amaechi) is a true democrat who understands the rights of every party member.<br />

The party also said that, contrary to what it described as fake, distorted and misleading news making the rounds that the Minister made some changes in the party’s leadership, that there is no crisis in the party and that the members of the party’s executive are intact. It said, rather, the Minister made some changes within his own political team which does not affect, in any way, the party in the state.<br />
<br />
A statement signed by the Chairman, APC Rivers State, Chief Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, said that, truly, the minister has the right to make the changes within his own team which does not affect the party’s leadership structure in the state. He, however, enjoined party members to put hands on deck to make the party in the state a formidable one to beat their opponents in the coming 2019 elections.<br />
<br />
The statement read thus:<br />
“Our attention has been drawn to all the hullabaloo, fake news and mostly distorted, inaccurate and misleading reports in the media, especially in the social media about a non-existent crisis due to some purported changes in the leadership of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Rivers State.<br />
<br />
“This is not true, entirely false and misleading. For clarity, we wish to state categorically that:<br />
All members of the All Progressives Congress(APC) leadership in Rivers State are intact. From our ward officers to State party executives, no one has been removed or suspended from office.<br />
<br />
“We are aware that our leader, the leader of the party in the state, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is making some changes in his personal political group, team or caucus in the State. It is his right and prerogative to make any leadership changes within his own political team, group or caucus. Amaechi created the caucus, team or group, appointed its members and leaders and so can make any changes he deems fit within this his personal group, team or caucus.<br />
<br />
“But we must emphasize that these changes by the Honourable Minister of Transportation within his personal political team, group or caucus has absolutely nothing to do with the party leadership structure and does not affect the party leadership structures at all levels in the State.<br />
<br />
“Contrary to fake wild speculations and deliberately misleading insinuations, no member of the party in the State is been stopped or prevented from having ambition or wanting to seek for any elective office. And we must reinstate here that no APC member will be stopped or prevented from seeking any elective office. We know for a fact that as a consummate democrat, our leader, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has not and will not stop, prevent or even attempt to discourage any party member from seeking any political office, elective or otherwise.<br />
<br />
“For the purpose of clarity, we want to emphasize that as a truly democratic party, The APC in Rivers State will ensure a level-playing field for all its aspirants to any elective political office. In accordance with our party rules, regulations and constitution, we shall be fair to all aspirants and will always ensure that the process leading to the emergence of our candidates for all elective political offices is free, fair and credible.<br />

“Sadly, this morning, we have seen or heard disparaging comments in the media attributed to less than a handful of party members on this issue. We suspect that they were misquoted or even didn’t say what were attributed to them. With the deluge of orchestrated false and fake stories about our party and our leader, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in some segments of the media today, we are constrained to believe that these comments are fake like the false and fake stories been peddled to the media by detractors about a non-existent crisis in the Rivers State chapter of the APC; and fake comments that are been deceitfully and misleadingly attributed to our leader, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.<br />

On Tuesday the 13th of June, 2017, the great patriot and nation builder, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, turned 75 years old. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, his former boss and military superior who joined the army years before General Abubakar did says he is 74. If I talk they will say I am a wailer!<br />

In any case, we have a President who told us last October 1st that (and I am using his exact words), “Investors from all over the world are falling over themselves to come and do business in Nigeria.” This is despite the fact that under Buhari, foreign investment into Nigeria has fallen to a nine year low. Well I guess a man who can tell such a blatant lie can be relied upon to state his real age.<br />
<br />
Inconclusive age. Inconclusive certificate. Inconclusive elections. Please General Abdulsalami Abubakar, find time to advise your ‘younger’ brother to be more honest during this year’s October 1 speech.<br />
<br />
And then this integrity challenged Presidency had the guts to call the discharge of Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki by the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Wednesday the 14th of June an ‘outrageous travesty of justice’!<br />
<br />
This is the same Presidency that was quiet when a Kano court freed the killers of evangelist Bridget Agbahime after the Kano state Attorney General withdrew the charges against them. I guess that was not a ‘travesty of justice’ to them.<br />
<br />
This is the same Presidency that sees nothing wrong with President Muhammadu Buhari hiring 13 SANs for his defense in the case challenging the authenticity of his WAEC certificate. I do not need even one SAN if someone accuses me of not having my WAEC certificate. All I have to do is present it. If it is lost all I have to do is apply to WASC or Cambridge University for a letter acknowledging that I sat for and passed my WAEC/GCE.<br />
<br />
This is coming only two days after the National Judicial Council exposed the Buhari Presidency as liars who lied about their appeal in the case of reinstated Justice Adeniyi Ademola and five other judges.<br />
<br />
That a Presidency with such a record of dishonesty has the guts to point fingers at Saraki is the real outrage and travesty! As far as I am concerned, the only good thing about this Presidency is acting Professor Yemi Osinbajo.<br />
<br />
I mean look at the people surrounding President Buhari? A polytechnic graduate as finance minister, a French graduate as agriculture minister and an English Literature graduate with no private sector experience as minister of transport!<br />
<br />
Never since the civil war has Nigeria been so divided. This administration is so inept and divisive that even amongst themselves they are fighting. What did Jesus say in Matthew 12:25 “every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:”<br />
<br />
The Presidency allowed the Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution, Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla, to lambast the judiciary, a separate and independent arm of government. The judiciary responded by calling the Presidency dishonest. Let us not forget that the Presidency has been fighting the legislature, the third arm of government.<br />
<br />
Not only is the government divided, the nation is divided. The North has given a quit notice to the Igbos and is not backing down. The rest of the country is taking preemptive measures as we speak.<br />
<br />
And even though Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed his ‘condemnation’ of the quit notice given to the Igbos by Northern youths and ordered the ‘arrest’ of their leaders, it is now over a week and the police have not arrested even one of the youths who gave the Igbos quit notice.<br />
<br />
I am not surprised. I expected it. If you go to my facebook profile you will see that I as much as predicted it. Not by any divine revelation, but just by a process of deductive reasoning.<br />
<br />
Do you still doubt the 5% versus 97% mantra? Compare this with the speed with which the police arrested the man who named his dog Buhari. Compare that with the speed at which the one sided arrest was carried out after the Ife Hausa/Yoruba clash. This is the same way that the killers of evangelist Eunice Agbahime were discharged on the order of the Kano State Attorney General. Meanwhile Audu Maikori who erroneously tweeted false information and apologized was arrested faster than the speed of light.<br />
<br />
Is it not clear people? There is one law for the 5% and another law for the 97%. Welcome to the new and improved Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari!<br />
<br />
I am more than 100% confident that the current division in Nigeria was ignited by that infamous 5% versus 97% speech that Muhammadu Buhari gave in Washington on June 23, 2015. It is quite unfortunate that this administration began on such a premise.<br />
<br />
No Father should ever tell some of his kids in the presence of the rest of his kids that he loves them more than the others. When that happens, the discontent that it will cause may lead to the break up of that home.<br />
<br />
Even if you as a father have favorites, you must do your best to hide it. Genesis 37:4 says “And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.” Is it any surprise then that today the 97% “not speak peaceably unto” speak unto the 5%?<br />
<br />
In this instance, President Muhammadu Buhari, is Jacob, the North and specifically the northwest and more specifically Katsina state and even more specifically Daura are Joseph. The Southeast are the 10 half brothers of Joseph who were not loved as much as Jacob loved Joseph. The Southwest is Benjamin, Joseph’s full brother from his mother Rachel who Jacob loved second best after Joseph of all his 12 children.<br />
<br />
Finally, let me end by saying that I like Aisha Muhammadu Buhari. She is a classy and very beautiful First Lady, but is it right for her to accept China’s ?60 million donation to her NGO?<br />
<br />
China has expansionist and imperialist ambitions in Nigeria and Africa. After accepting this monies, can her husband and his administration still stand up to China in crucial negotiations? Is this not a conflict of interest? A nation that is offering Nigeria billions of dollars in loans gives out such a huge sum to the President’s wife’s pet project.<br />
<br />
There is nothing wrong with China giving financial aid to Nigeria, but giving it to our First Lady’s pet project is another thing. How a so called anti corruption President like Muhammadu Buhari cannot see the error in this makes people of conscience doubt his anti corruption credentials. If this happened in America or Europe it would provoke a Congressional/Parliamentary probe. Let me ask you a question, would Nigeria’s cashtivists have been quiet if the wife was Patience Jonathan and the husband was Dr. Goodluck Jonathan?<br />

Obiano’s denial followed a media report that he had concluded arrangements to quit the party because of the crisis currently rocking APGA.<br />

The report said Obiano had vowed not to accept Martin Agbaso as the National Chairman of APGA.<br />

It maintained that” A source told APGA Interactive Forum that a meeting was held by all the 21 Transition Committee Chairmen last night.<br />
<br />
“Top on the agenda of the meeting was to perfect plans for Obiano to join another party.<br />
<br />
“The meeting was prompted by the event at the Enugu State High Court, where Agbaso camp successfully thwarted and dashed the hope of Obiano’s camp from taken over the leadership of the party before primaries.<br />
<br />
But speaking through his Senior Special Assistant on media and strategic communications, Mr Oliver Okpala, the governor described the story as the handiwork of detractors, adding that the story was concocted to deceive the public.<br />
<br />
His statement read in part, “The attention of the office of the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has been drawn to a current rumour making waves in the media to the effect that Gov Willie Obiano has now dumped APGA for a new political party yet unknown.<br />
<br />
“I hereby state for proper public enlightenment and information that Governor Willie Obiano remains a strong card carrying member of APGA and he still remains the chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees and leader of the party.<br />
<br />
“He has never contemplated on the idea of dumping APGA for any other party. He still stands on his unshakable desire and commitment of seeking re-election as governor under the platform of his party APGA.<br />

“This present rumour circulating is no doubt the handiwork of the opposition who has no genuine political programme or economic agenda for the people of Anambra State.<br />

“This rumour is exactly sailing in the figment of the imagination of the opposition. Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia has dissolved the state executive council.<br />

The dissolution was contained in a statement signed and posted on the state government’s official website by the Permanent Secretary, Government House, Mr Onyii Wamah on Friday night.<br />
<br />
According to the permanent secretary, the governor retained his Chief of Staff, Mr Sunny Nwakodo, and the Commissioner for Finance, Mr Obinna Oriaku.<br />
<br />
Also retained is the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the state, Chief Umeh Kalu (SAN).<br />
<br />
No reason was given for the sack of the commissioners, special advisers as well as senior special assistants and the SSG.<br />
<br />
The dissolution was coming after the commissioners took turns to present their scorecards at a forum attended by the governor between May 28 and May 29.<br />
<br />
The statement also announced the appointment of three special advisers to the governor, including the former Commissioner for Works, Mr Eziuche Ubani, who was appointed as the Special Adviser on Works and Project Monitoring.<br />
<br />
Others were Mr Emma Nwabuko and Mr Solomon Ogunji, who were appointed as Special Advicer/Personal Secretary to the Governor and Special Adviser on Urban Renewal, respectively.</div>

The Federal Government says it is gladdened by the accolades showered on Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, Executive Director of UN Population Fund (UNFPA), for his exemplary work and impact on the global community.<br />

The Nigeria’s Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Bande, stated this while delivering the tribute by the Federal Government at the valedictory night for Osotimehin in New York.<br />
<br />
Bande expressed Nigeria’s gratitude at the outpouring of encomium for the late UNFPA chief who died on June 4 in his home in New York at the age of 68 years.<br />
<br />
“Nigeria joins the rest of the grieving world in mourning but also celebrating the life of an illustrious citizen, as a Government and people.<br />
<br />
“This gathering today barely whispered that he is a Nigerian. We take no offence. We take pride in the fact that we produced him.<br />
<br />
“His commitment on global health issues has been attested to by all through the testimonies that you gave.<br />
<br />
“So today, we are proud to give him to the world. In Nigeria, Prof. Osotimehin was a distinguished teacher and professional public servant,” the Nigeria’s Permanent Representative said.<br />
<br />
The Nigerian envoy noted the exceptional legacy of Osotimehin at the University of Ibadan Teaching Hospital.<br />
<br />
He said the deceased sustained the pride of the College as the primary and principal parent institution for post graduate training in medicine in West Africa and by extension, in Africa.<br />
<br />
According to him, the stewardship of the former Nigeria’s Minister of Health at the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, was also distinguished by hard work and excellence.<br />
<br />
“That was what we really knew him for and it was those qualities that he brought to bear and that made him attracted to the world system.<br />
<br />
“Nigeria is gladdened by the statements by all about celebrating him and continuing the work he did, which did not die with him.<br />
<br />
“And we can only affirm that with the same commitment, we will carry on the work that has been done by him, as Government of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“I want to thank all of you for rallying around us and the family during this loss of a great and distinguished Nigerian, loving family man, politician, public servant and public health professional.”<br />
<br />
Ms Amina Mohammed, the UN Deputy Secretary-General, who frequently betrayed emotion throughout the valedictory, described Osotimehin as “a big brother and a friend”.<br />
<br />
Mohammed, who said she was still shocked at his death, recalled how the late UNFPA boss welcomed and supported her to quickly found her feet at the UN in 2013.<br />
<br />
Osotimehin, who was the most senior African Under-Secretary-General and served as Chair of the UN Senior Africans Group until his death, was also honoured by the Group of African States at the UN.<br />
<br />
The group, in a tribute by Amb. Ignace Lufuta, the Ambassador/Permanent Representative of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, expressed its condolences to the Government and the people of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“He will be remembered by the African Group as a statesman and worthy son of Africa who in particular engaged and prevailed with African leadership on important issues as it affects the continent and its people.”<br />
<br />
The Executive Director of UNICEF, Dr Anthony Lake; Executive Director of UNAIDS, Dr Michel Sidibé; and Special Adviser to UN Secretary-General on the Prevention of Conflicts, Adama Dieng also paid special tribute to their late colleague.<br />
<br />
Others who honoured the night of tribute included the Permanent Representatives of countries at the UN, family, friends and members of the Nigerian community.</div>

As Lydia Pogu and Joy Bishara slept in their beds on the night of April 14, 2014, terrorists were hurtling toward their boarding school in the Nigerian town of Chibok.<br />

The girls, both teenagers in their senior year of high school, were resting after a festive evening — dinner, dancing, playing the drums, “just having fun,” Joy tells PEOPLE.<br />
<br />
Suddenly two men burst into the school, claiming to be soldiers who would protect the girls. Frightened, the girls did as they were told, gathering into a group. Then more men arrived, firing guns into the air and shouting, “Allahu akbar!” (“God is great” in Arabic.) The girls recognized it as the battle cry of Boko Haram, the terrorist group that has killed thousands of Nigerians in recent years in a bid to create an Islamic state and wipe out Western education from schools.<br />
<br />
“I was thinking, ‘Am I ever going to see my mom again?’ ” says Joy.<br />
<br />
Boko Haram kidnapped nearly 300 girls that night, threatening to sell them as slaves. The news rocketed around the world, sparking the viral hashtag “Bring Back Our Girls.” A few dozen girls managed to escape. In recent months, more than 100 girls have been set free as a result of government negotiations with Boko Haram, but more than 100 girls remain missing.<br />
<br />
On the night of the attack, the terrorists torched the school, then ordered the girls to march down a dusty back road and pile into open-air trucks. Joy’s truck was so high off the ground, she recalls, she had to use a small car as step-up to get in.<br />
<br />
As the trucks roared off into the night, the terrified girls frantically discussed jumping. Lydia recalls a friend saying it was better to take the risk than to disappear forever — right before she jumped. Lydia prayed, then followed her friend, landing hard on the ground, a searing pain in her hips as she scrambled up and headed blindly into the thick, thorny bushes, with her friend. “We ran and ran,” she says.<br />
<br />
Joy was debating whether to jump as well. She heard a girl say it would be better to die there—at least their parents would find a corpse. She felt a surge of courage: She could do this. Then she looked down at the ground far below. “Something is like, ‘Joy, you cannot. And I’m like yes I can.’ ” She leapt, landing on her stomach in a cloud of dust from the dirt road, before catching her breath and fleeing with two of her classmates into the brush.<br />
<br />
After that, they just kept running. Lydia and her friend were covered in blood from thorns, their clothes torn. They came upon a village where people had spent the night hiding in the bushes, fearing their homes would be burned, as Boko Haram had been there just hours before. The villagers pointed the girls toward home and told them to “run in a zigzag,” says Lydia, because it would be harder for anyone to shoot them.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Joy and her two classmates—exhausted and afraid to stop, especially now in daylight—had found a road, where they encountered a man on a motorcycle. “We ask him to please take us back home. He ask, ‘Who are you?’ We were scared. We don’t want to tell,” says Joy, who ultimately confided in the man, and he took them home. Lydia and her friend lucked out as well, coming to a road and stopping a man who drove them back to Chibok.<br />
<br />
Over the next few months, they worried that Boko Haram would come back to get them — sometimes sleeping outside where they felt it would be easier to hide. When they heard about an opportunity to finish school in America, they didn’t hesitate.<br />
<br />
With help from a human rights group in Virginia, the Jubilee Campaign, they came to the U.S. in August 2014. After attending boarding school for two years in Virginia, they transferred last summer to the Canyonville Christian Academy, a scenic boarding school in Oregon surrounded by soaring redwoods and pines. “They kept our tutors busy and worked nonstop,” says Doug Wead, president of the academy. “When they encountered scary new challenges, they kept jumping off that truck.”<br />
<br />
During her emotional graduation speech, Joy said, “I forgive the people who hurt me. I have nothing against them. I am praying for the return of my classmates to their parents.”</div>

The army on Saturday confirmed the arrest of a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, Aliyu Ahmed, alias “Aliko”.<br />

The army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman said in the statement said that “Aliko” was arrested on Friday by troops of 33 Brigade following a tip off in Yuga village in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, where he has been in hiding.<br />
<br />
The Army also said that it intercepted four child traffickers and 19 under aged children in Yobe.<br />
<br />
“He was found to be in possession of one single barrel gun and one Dane gun.<br />
<br />
“During preliminary interrogation, he confessed that he actively participated in several Boko Haram terrorists’ attacks and also owned an AK-47 Rifle which lost during one of the attacks they carried out in 2016.<br />
<br />
“His interrogation continued,” Usman said.<br />
<br />
He said the four traffickers, who were arrested by of troops of Bravo Company, 120 Battalion at Katarko, were conveying the 19 children from Potiskum to Garin Tuwo, Bungai and Buni Yadi in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe and Galarabala in Biu Local Government Area of Borno.<br />

“Both the suspected traffickers and their victims have been moved to the Brigade Headquarters for transfer to National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons,” the army spokesman said.</div>

The President Muhammad Buhari-led Federal Government says its inability to create 3 million jobs for Nigerians as promised is due to the downturn of the economy.<br />

This was disclosed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, in an interview with the Sun.<br />
<br />
The Minister also blamed corruption as being responsible for government’s inability to meet its promise.<br />
<br />
Ngige noted that with corruption it was impossible to create jobs.<br />
<br />
He said, “If you have corruption, you cannot have resources to create jobs. Job creation to be specific is a multi-faceted; multi-sectoral affair involving all strata of the economic chain of the country.<br />
<br />
“We had an instantaneous oil price drop when we came in, and as the prices were dropping, because of militancy, Nigeria couldn’t maintain oil facilities, there were vandalism of oil exports terminals and oil pipelines.<br />
<br />
“So, Nigeria could not even meet its OPEC output of 2.2 million barrels per day, at one point we were doing only 1.2million barrels per day last year, it was that bad, around August to October last year, in fact starting from June we didn’t do more than 1.4 million barrels at an oil price of 35 dollars per barrel.<br />
<br />
“There was no money to create enabling environment for jobs to be created by the private sector. What is the enabling environment that we need here, we need power, electricity.”<br />
<br />
He also stressed that if not for the government’s intervention, the sack of workers in the private sector would have been much more than what it is now.</div>

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari will soon return from his medical leave overseas.<br />

Recall that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had on April 20, 2016 arraigned Ugbolue and Lawrence Pepple, both former aides to Kuku on two separate charges bordering on criminal conspiracy, false declaration of assets and fraudulent acquisition of property to the tune of N55million.</div>

Former Super Eagles winger Femi Opabunmi has revealed how he was swindled by some pastors in the South West part of Nigeria in a bid for him to regain his sight.<br />

Opabunmi recounted his ordeal ithat he suddenly lost his sight during training with his French second division side Niort in 2006.<br />
<br />
And after two unsuccessful surgery in France, Opabunmi returned to Nigeria in search of a cure for his partial blindness but according to him he was duped.<br />
<br />
"Many believed I was cursed, even my mother because in Paris the doctors medically said there was nothing wrong with my eyes," Opabunmi, one of the best players at the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Cup where he helped Nigeria reach the final, jounalists.<br />
<br />
"Funds were given to me to survive by my former teammates (including Osaze Odemwingie) and well wishers. I gave pastors some of the money, hoping that if I got healed I would start afresh with a coaching career.<br />
<br />
"I visited several churches and mountains in search of a cure but it never happened.<br />
<br />
"They duped me of my small cash. I paid more than 400k to pastors to see that I got cured but nothing happened."<br />
<br />
"I also went to see some Imams as well. But they all turned out to be false men of God who duped me all the way."  </div>

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health, has launched a campaign to ban smoking in public places including motor parks, shopping malls and health care centres.<br />

In a communiqué, the ministry said according to Section 9 of the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act 2015, once convicted, offenders are liable to a fine of at least N50, 000 and/or six months’ imprisonment.<br />
<br />
Tagged the Clean Air Campaign, the ministry said the law would henceforth be taken seriously in a bid to protect and promote the citizens’ right to health, life, physical integrity and safety.<br />
<br />
To carry out the campaign successfully, the ministry also said it was being supported by the Cancer Society of Nigeria, World Health Organisation, ONE Campaign, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Civil Society Organisations and the Tobacco Free Kids based in Washington DC, United States.<br />
<br />
The communiqué read, “The World Health Organisation estimates that worldwide, second-hand tobacco smoke is currently responsible for the deaths of about 600,000 people yearly, 80 percent of which occur in low-income and middle-income countries like Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“Smoking in public places is now banned in Nigeria. Section 9 of the Nigeria Tobacco Control Act 2015 stipulates that offenders, once convicted, are liable to a fine of not less than N50,000 or not less than six months’ imprisonment, or both.<br />
<br />
“Public places where smoking is prohibited by law in Nigeria include: child care facilities, educational facilities, health care facilities, playgrounds/amusement parks, public parks (gardens), stadia, restaurants/bars, public transportation parks and plazas.<br />
<br />
“The Federal Ministry of Health is committed to the fight to ensure a tobacco-free Nigeria, and will in the weeks and months ahead actively collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure enforcement of the Act, and with the National Assembly to ensure that necessary supporting regulation is passed.”</div>

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is expected to lead other dignitaries to inaugurate the 2017 edition of a multi-event Nigerian Brands Carnival to showcase Nigerian-made goods and services.<br />

Project Coordinator of Nigerian Brands Carnival organising committee, Mr. Adegboyega Ojuolape, announced this at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday.<br />
<br />
He explained that over 295,000 patrons would attend the week-long event scheduled to commence on October 23, 2017, with a charity soccer match. According to him, the event is coming against the backdrop of the need for Nigerians to begin to celebrate, patronise and connect their economic prosperity to that of the success of Nigerian brands.<br />
<br />
Ojuolape said, “If Nigeria is to succeed as a country and occupy a place of pride in the comity of nations, citizens must begin to find a way to consume most of the products and services that are produced locally.<br />
<br />
“The Nigerian Brands Carnival is coming against the backdrop of the recent economic recession which saw the purchasing power of Nigerians drop drastically due primarily to the high demand for foreign exchange determined products and services from countries other than Nigeria, following the free fall of the Naira against other international currencies.<br />
<br />
“As private sector players, we have seen the need to support the efforts of government in its quest to get citizens to patronise Nigerian products and services.”<br />
<br />
The coordinator charged the Federal Government to lead by example by ensuring that Nigerian-made goods and services are given the pride of place during state and other functions.<br />
<br />
He stressed that others would take a cue when they see that foreign products do not take the shine where there are Nigerian alternatives.<br />
<br />
In response to a question on the issue of quality, Ojuolape said the whole essence of the carnival is to present to Nigerians the fact that the country has come of age in terms of the quality and packaging of its locally made products.<br />
<br />
He said an increasing number of Nigerian products and services are beginning to hold their own against the foreign competition in terms of quality, while noting that the nation and its entrepreneurs stand to benefit more when over 180 million citizens patronise them.<br />
<br />
He expressed optimism that the nation was set for greater heights despite its lack of adequate power supply and other challenges. He, however, noted that despite the challenges, so many local and foreign investors were reaping bountifully from the business decisions they had taken years ago.<br />
<br />
The event is also expected to feature local music, cultural displays, dance, drama, comedy exhibitions, as well as interactions between inventors, manufacturers and end users.</div>

It was a night of glowing tributes, fond memories and outpouring of emotion as the whole UN family and the world at large gathered on Friday at a valedictory for Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin.<br />

Osotimehin, the Executive Director of the UN Population Fund, died on June 4 in his home in New York at the age of 68.<br />
<br />
The valedictory night was attended by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, his Deputy, Amina Mohammed, President of the General Assembly Peter Thomson, Heads of UN agencies, and Permanent Representatives, among others.<br />
<br />
Guterres, in his remarks, said, “The news of Dr. Babatunde’s sudden death last week devastated our UN family; today we mourn this heartbreaking loss and we remember his inspiring life.<br />
<br />
“Babatunde was completely devoted to the cause of women and girls – especially those who are most marginalised.<br />
<br />
“He was driven by the conviction that every single family on earth should be free to decide on the timing and spacing of their children.<br />
<br />
“That no one would suffer from harmful traditional practices; that there would be no more female genital mutilation; no more prenatal sex selection; no more child brides and no more maternal deaths.”<br />
<br />
According to him, Osotimehin worked day and night to achieve this just future, recalling an instance of the dedication of his former colleague.<br />
<br />
“When he was appointed Executive Director of UNFPA, he was due to start at the beginning of 2011. January 1 was a Saturday.<br />
<br />
“So his staff suggested that they put out a press release saying he would be in the office as of January 3. But he completely dismissed the idea.<br />
<br />
“He was ready to start on January 1. And he did go into the office that day and stayed through the holiday weekend.<br />
<br />
“Babatunde embodied that ethic of service throughout his term – working every day to help people who were suffering.”<br />
<br />
Guterres affirmed that Osotimehin continually made UNFPA an even more effective organisation that stood as a respected international authority on sexual and reproductive rights.<br />
<br />
“His loss is felt most deeply by his family and by the staff of UNFPA. But his passing is also a loss for the world.<br />
<br />
“The name ‘Babatunde’ means ‘father comes back.’ Though he is now gone, I have no doubt this father will come back every time we speak out – as he did – for women and girls.<br />
<br />
“Babatunde will be with us every time we champion the rights of individuals and families of all kinds. He will live in our hearts as long as we carry on his fight for justice – for a better world for all people.<br />
<br />
“Let us honour his memory with the actions Babatunde would have wanted us to take – actions for the sake of others and especially women and girls,” Guterres said.<br />
<br />
Thomson, in his tribute delivered by Amb. Dessima Williams, Special Adviser to President of the General Assembly, said Osotimehin impacted millions of people around the world.<br />
<br />
“As a professor, he cultivated the next generation of top-class doctors; as the Minister of Health, he served Nigeria with dedication; and as the Executive Director of UNFPA, he was a steadfast champion of the rights of all.<br />
<br />
“Every person he knew, he respected. Everyone he did not know, he fought for their rights. Thus was that human being we have just lost.<br />
<br />
“Here at the United Nations, we will never forget how fearlessly, how forcefully, and how tirelessly he fought for the dignity of women and girls all around the world.”<br />
<br />
The Acting Executive Director of UNFPA, Dr Natalia Kanem, in her tribute, described Osotimehin as “a super-doctor, a mentor and a teacher who taught all those who worked with him to persevere and to persist even on the face of adversity”.<br />
<br />
According to her, he championed the defence of the rights against harmful practices and dignity of the adolescent girls and told them to champion the same.<br />
<br />
“So Prof., we thank you for inspiring us, for guiding us, for teaching us. We’re missing you already. We miss your counsel, we miss your humour and your profound love for humanity.”<br />
<br />
Kanem pledged that the UNFPA would continue to carry forward the torch lit by Osotimehin’s vision and example in his determination to be the voice for the most vulnerable all over the world.</div>
