Liverpool push English Premier League title fight to final match day

 For the first time in five years, the Premier League title race will go to the final day of the season. 
 
The Reds’ 3-2 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park moves them back to the top of the table, but only tells half the story of this nerve-shredding evening. 
 
Liverpool won it and lost it, twice, but Jamaal Lascelles’ own goal, four minutes from time, got them over the line in the end..

Whether Liverpool or Manchester City, whoever lifts that trophy next weekend, we should applaud and appreciate them. These are two special football sides. 
 
Pep Guardiola’s men had one hand on the trophy at 1-1. They had one-and-a-half on it when Salomon Rondon smashed Newcastle level at 2-2. Instead, the ball is in City’s court. It is they who have to win now. 
 
Liverpool rocked and they shook during an absorbing second half. They lost Mohamed Salah to a head injury, and lost their shape and their composure as the final whistle loomed on the horizon. 
 
But then Klopp’s substitutes, his dice-rolls, paid off big time. 
 
Xherdan Shaqiri swung in a free-kick, Divock Origi climbed, the ball cannoned off Lascelles and into the net. 
 
The Liverpudlians crammed into the away end, breathed once more. They had stared into the abyss and been dragged to safety. 
 
This was their eighth successive league victory. It would be feat at any time, in any place. In this season, against the Manchester City machine, it is incredible. 
 
The pressure builds and builds, and Liverpool find ways to deal with it. Their bravery is unquestionable. 
 
They had so many excuses here. They were without Roberto Firmino and they lost Salah. They were leggy after their midweek exertions in Barcelona. They hadn’t won away at Newcastle in six years, and found a Magpies side emboldened under the lights in their final home game of the season. 
 
Rafa Benitez would do them a favour, the story went. He didn’t, he scared the living daylights out of his former club. Ta Rafa, la. 
 
Liverpool led, first through Virgil van Dijk and then through Salah, who netted his 100th European top-flight goal and his 22nd in the Premier League this season. 
 
Newcastle levelled through Christian Atsu, the former Everton loanee, and then saw Rondon restore parity at 2-2 early in the second half. 
 
That looked like it would be the killer blow, but Liverpool had other ideas. They found a way, as they have done so often over the past 10 months. 
 
Now, having seen off one former manager, Liverpool must now hope for a favour from another. 
 
Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester, who visit City on Monday night, are the Reds’ next phone-a-friend. A draw or win for the Foxes at the Etihad will put Klopp’s men in control.

A resident of Fadausi Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos State, Kenile Nwabuzor, has killed herself following protracted disagreements between her and her boyfriend identified as David. 
 
It was gathered that the duo had endured an unhealthy relationship since they met about two years ago. 
 
It was learnt that the matter came to a head on Thursday, April 11, 2019 when the 26-year-old hairdresser decided to commit suicide after David reportedly said he was no longer interested in the relationship. 
 
Shortly before the incident, she was said to have sent a text message to her boyfriend, lamenting he had made life miserable for her and that she would soon kill herself.

Speaking to journalists during the week, David, a graduate, said he hooked up with Nwabuzor two years ago while she was mourning the death of her mother. 
 
He said Nwabuzor, who is a secondary school leaver, expressed fears that their relationship might not work out because of the disparity in their educational qualifications. 
 
He stated, “She was my girlfriend and I loved her so much. We started dating each other about two years ago. She was not that literate, but I told her it didn’t matter. When we met, she was in distress. Her mother just died then and she was living alone. She said she could not live without her mother. Her brothers are based in Ghana, but they usually sent her money. 
 
“She told me she finished secondary school, but I don’t think so. I really wanted to help her improve on her education. She easily got angry and if she had a disagreement with someone, she might not talk to that person again for years. As our relationship continued, I tried to correct her. I persuaded her to be going to church and bought a Bible for her. We usually had disagreements over petty issues. 
 
“If we had a misunderstanding, I could be in her house for hours begging her and she would not say anything. If I decided to go, that would be another fight. At times, the misunderstanding would last for days.” 
 
David, a photographer, told newsmen that Nwabuzor usually accused him of being promiscuous, adding that he found it difficult to dispel her belief. 
 
“Because of the nature of my job, I have girls around me. She would be complaining that I was going out with them. I tried to tell her that she needed to trust me. I also saw boys around her because she was beautiful, yet I trusted her. 
 
“Recently, she said I didn’t love her again. She changed her phone’s password to deny me access to her phone. She accused me of sleeping with women. It was true many ladies wanted me to ask them out, but I ignored them,” he added. 
 
David explained that four days before the unfortunate incident, he had missed Nwabuzor’s calls while on an assignment at an event. He said he got back home late that day and returned her calls, but she did not pick them. 
 
The photographer stated that when he called Nwabuzor the next day, she started insulting him and he ended the call. 
 
He went on, “She sent me text messages, but I didn’t reply. On Tuesday, I went to her house to return the charger she lent me and when I was about to leave, she returned all the things I had bought for her. That night, she sent a text message to me, saying that I had stopped loving her since December 2018 when we had fun at different places. 
 
“She said she was no longer interested in the relationship. In my reply, I told her she was free to find her peace anywhere else. On Wednesday morning, I thought about everything again. I knew she was depressed and I had been the person encouraging her. I sent her another message, begging her. Most times, she would be the one to say she was not interested in the relationship, yet she would be crying. I was always the one saying sorry. 
 
“That Thursday, she came to our house for the first time and met with my parents. That was the day my father knew her as my girlfriend. She reported me to him and said she was no longer interested in the relationship. My father sought my opinion and I said I didn’t have any comment. 
 
“She started crying. She called one of her brothers and told him she was coming to Ghana. My father is a clergyman. He tried to counsel her. As my father was talking to her, she was crying. At a point, she stood up and left. Afterwards, I left for my workplace.” 
 
David told newsmen he was in the studio when he received WhatsApp voice messages from Nwabuzor, but he was busy to listen to them. 
 
He said she later sent a text message to him, saying, “You want to kill me; I will help you kill myself. Thank you for making my life a hell.” 
 
He said immediately after he read the message, he took a motorcycle and headed for her house. 
 
“On getting there, I peeped from her window and saw her body dangling on a rope tied to the ceiling. I shouted and barged into her room. Her neighbours helped me loose the rope while I brought her down. She was already heavy, but I was not feeling the weight. 
 
“I was not in my right senses again. I took her on a motorcycle to a nearby hospital. She was referred to Randle General Hospital. A doctor confirmed her dead on arrival. I called her brother and relations. The police arrested me and detained me for two days. They said I should not have brought her down,” he stated. 
 
It was learnt that the deceased was buried on Saturday, April 13 which was David’s 26th birthday. 
 
“I have lost my sleep these days because of the incident. I am still going through the trauma,” David added. 
 
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the police had received a distress call from the general hospital that one Kenile Nwabuzor was brought in dead by her boyfriend. 
 
He said, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the lady had earlier sent a text message to her boyfriend that she would kill herself. Her corpse was removed and deposited in the Lagos Mainland Hospital morgue.”

The Nigerian Air Force is set to deploy its newly assembled fighter jets, Agusta 109 helicopters, in the North-Western states currently ravaged by bandits. 
 
The jets are expected to complement existing efforts being made to combat the rising killings and kidnappings in the region, it was further learnt. 
 
The power-attack helicopters were unveiled at the 55th anniversary of the Air Force on Monday. 
 
Speaking with newsmen on Friday, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, said more personnel would also be deployed in the region to combat the escalating violence and killings.

He noted that the Air Force would on Saturday open a helipad in the Birnin Gwari area of Kaduna State to serve as an operational base for its fighter aircraft deployed in the region. 
North 
The helipad, Daramola said, would be opened by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, and the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai. 
 
There have been growing concerns over the spate of killings and kidnappings in the northern region, especially -Western states like Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna. 
 
The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, had while speaking at the quarterly Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council meeting in Kaduna said that owing to banditry and communal violence, 436 deaths were recorded in the North-West between January and April, 2019. 
 
Adamu explained that Zamfara recorded 203 murder incidents while 104 of them were linked with banditry. 
 
According to the police chief, Katsina had 21 murder cases while Sokoto had 19, adding that “it is pertinent to mention that Zamfara has the highest national kidnap rate of 281 victims in what has been directly linked to activities of armed bandits (sic) in the state.” 
 
Daramola confirmed to newsmen on Friday that the Agusta 109 helicopters would be inducted into the North-West theatre in addition to the eight aircraft already deployed in the region. 
 
Daramola said, “The Chief of Air Staff has mentioned that the two Agusta 109 aircraft will be deployed to add value in the operations against bandits in the North-West. We have intensified operations in the general area. 
 
“On April 8, we deployed additional assets in the North-West region, which made it a total of eight aircraft that were deployed there, and these are attack helicopters, Alpha Jets and ISR platforms. 
 
“The newly assembled Agusta 109 helicopter will also be inducted into the operations of the North-West. On Saturday, the Air Force will inaugurate the helipad that was established in the Birnin-Gwari area of Kaduna State near Zamfara to add impetus to the operations being conducted within that general area. 
 
“The personnel have already been deployed. We have another helipad in Gusau and these are the air fields where operations are launched out against bandits in the North-West region.” 
 
When asked if NAF would treat the bandits as terrorists, Daramola said the Air Force might not be able to attack the bandits like terrorists because some of the bandits live among civilians unlike the North-East where the Boko Haram terrorists had solitary hideouts. 
 
He added, “There is a slight difference in the sense that in the North-West you have to avoid collateral damage, especially when these bandits are not in their camps; they stay in places where there are civilians and non-combatants. And that is why we are not using bombs which are what we use in the North-East. 
 
“So the operational environment in the North-West is somewhat different from the North-East, but the criminals are all enemies of the state and they do not want the safety and security of Nigerians because of what they stand to gain, whether ideologically or socio-economically.” 
 
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army in Abuja on Friday said its current threat assessments indicated the migration of bandits from Zamfara State to Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto and Niger states. It said it had expanded its operation, Harbin Kunama 3, to cover these other states. 
 
The Chief of the Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai, who stated this at the Army Headquarters, called on residents of the affected states to persevere in the face of inconveniences due to restrictions that might be imposed in the areas. 
 
He, however, stressed that the army would ensure the defeat of the fleeing bandits. 
 
He said, “The Exercise Harbin Kunama 3 was launched on April 1, 2019, in Gusau, Zamfara State. Within the past one month, several bandits and criminal elements have been captured and killed while some camps, hideouts and equipment of the criminals have been destroyed. 
 
“It has, however, been observed that there appears to be a resurgence of their activities in other contiguous states to Zamfara, like Kaduna, Kano and Niger states. It is against this backdrop that Exercise Harbin Kunama 3 is being reorganised and its mandate is to ensure the complete defeat of the fleeing bandits.

Foremost human right activist and lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, has directed that former president Olusegun Obasanjo be held responsible for loopholes in the constitution. 
 
Speaking in Lagos, last week, during the launch of the minority report written by Professor Olusegun Osoba and Dr. Yusufu Bala Usman, Mr. Femi Falana, said that the lacuna in the 1979 and 1999 constitutions would have been removed long ago, if Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in 1976 had accepted and implemented the Minority Report and Draft Constitution for the Federal Republic of Nigeria written by Osoba and Usman. He said that the controversy that surrounds the birthplace of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and what qualifies someone to be a citizen of Nigeria were clearly resolved in the Minority Report.

Falana said that unknown to the youths of this generation, the ‘Not Too Young to Run’ campaign was initially championed by Osoba and late Usman, 43 years ago. He said: ‘’Unknown to the Not Too Young to Run campaigners (who sometimes make a fetish of age in politics), Osoba and Usman had recommended in Section 145 of their own Draft Constitution way back in 1976 the minimum age of 30 as part of the qualifications to contest for the office of president or governor. 
 
”Similarly, the constitutional immunity for the president and governors and their respective deputies was hotly contested by Osoba and Usman during the making of the 1979 Constitution. ”According to them, the immunity provisions contradict violently the fundamental principle of the equality of all citizens before the law and is an unwarranted attempt to shield these high officials of the state from the full rigours of the law as would apply to the other citizens of Nigeria in similar situations of misconduct or improper conduct. 
 
”Other similarly remarkable provisions encapsulated in the Draft, but were regrettably rejected by the Obasanjo regime, include those on accountability by those in power; the purpose and management of political parties as well as the appointment of a prime minister by the elected president for the purpose of diffusing power. ”As Osoba and Usman rightly put it, the 1979 Constitution is a deliberate effort at mystification for the selfish interests of the bourgeoisie. 
 
The constitution is verbose. It is laden with technical loopholes. It is unwieldy with some contradictory provisions. As a matter fact, the pull for the Chapter II of the 1979 Constitution, which is also incorporated in the 1999 Constitution, was actually the Minority Report of Osoba and Usman that we are celebrating today.’’

A training aircraft belonging to the International Aviation College (IAC) Ilorin, Wednesday crash-landed at the Ilorin International Airport. It was learnt that the Diamond plane with registration Number 5N-BNH with two pilots onboard crashed landed at exactly 11:05am without any casualty. 
 
The incident caused panic within the airport and the Ilorin community. 
 
The two occupants escaped unhurt though the serious incident disrupted flight operations at the Ilorin International Airport for about three hours amidst panic in the airport community.

Flights, including the one which had the state governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed, on board, were delayed. 
 
It was gathered that the aircraft had difficulties with its landing gear as it prepared to touch down on the runway. 
 
The rector of the college, Engr. Benedict Adeyileka, in a telephone interview, yesterday confirmed that investigators from AIB had arrived at the college. 
 
It was learnt that the investigators arrived via Overland Airways flight in the morning. Adeyileka said the college immediately notified the investigators about the incident and the AIB’s management dispatched its officials for commencement of investigation into the incident. 
 
He did not, however, comment on the possible cause of the crash, saying the details would be released by AIB. 
 
He said: “What I can confirm to you is that we notified AIB immediately after the incident and the Bureau, too, sent in their investigators to unravel the cause of it. 
 
As I am talking to you right now, the investigators are on ground”. General Manager, Public Affairs, AIB, Tunji Oketunbi, said the college notified the agency immediately after the incident, stressing that its investigators would do a thorough job.

Seven ladies who were arrested in Abuja and convicted by a mobile court for prostitution have alleged that policemen attached to the Utako and Gwarimpa police stations in Abuja raped and physically assaulted them in custody. 
 
They also claimed that the police compelled them to plead guilty when they were arraigned before the court on Monday. 
 
Narrating their ordeal to journalists on Thursday, the ladies, who spoke anonymously, said after their arrest at a night club and a hotel, the police allegedly threw them into a cell and repeatedly tear-gassed them.

One of the victims, explained that a policeman attached to the Utako Police station, who was simply identified as ‘Yellow,’ allegedly hit her with a baton and also flogged her with a horse whip several times, injuring her arm and face in the process. 
 
Her explanations were also corroborated by her co-convicts who lamented the alleged emotional abuse and physical torture they suffered while in detention. 
 
Another victim, who claimed to have been arrested at a shopping plaza, said the policemen attached to the FCT ministerial task allegedly raped her when she could not pay them. 
 
She stated, “Three of us were brought out of the van and raped by the policemen because we had no money to give them. We were raped behind the National War College, Abuja. They pushed me to the ground and held me there while one of them raped me. He didn’t wear a condom. The other girls were also raped by two others one of who used a pure water sachet as condom.” 
 
Another victim said she was picked up by the police at a hotel where she attended a birthday bash. 
 
She stated, “I was invited to a birthday party at an apartment in a hotel. I came to the reception to get water and a woman suddenly held my hands and pushed me out of the hotel. I saw a lot of people with cameras and some with mobile phones taking my pictures and shooting a video of the arrest. 
 
“They took me to Zone 6 police station and from there to the Utako police station. I was on my period and I begged a policewoman to help me with a pad, but she refused. We were not allowed to make phone calls to our family members; I don’t know how my sister got to know, and she brought a pad for me.” 
 
“When I wanted to use it, a male policeman followed me inside the toilet and was watching me. This is not fair. A policeman, Yellow, beat me when I demanded for my phone. The next day, they took us to Life Camp police station after which they took us to Area 3. The policemen said we should plead guilty before the court otherwise, we would be remanded in prison.” 
 
An activist, Dorothy Njemanze, also narrated her experience in the hands of policemen who allegedly molested her, adding that she was awarded N6m damages by the court in 2017. 
 
She lamented that the Federal Government had refused to pay the award. 
 
The acting FCT police spokesman, ASP Gajere Danjuma, said the commissioner of police was aware of the allegations which he said were being investigated.

A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has said the appointment of a Nigerian, Mr Kaycee Madu, as Minister for Municipal Affairs in Canada is a proof to the world that Nigerians bring value wherever they go.

Some gunmen on Wednesday night invaded the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Moriki, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, and abducted five persons including two caterers and three children. 
 
Also, security was beefed up on Thursday in Daura and some of its surrounding villages after bandits kidnapped the Magajin Garin Daura, Alhaji Musa Umar, an in-law of President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday. 
 
Worried by the rising insecurity in the country particularly in the North, the House of Representatives on Thursday invited the President to address the lawmakers on what his administration was doing to stem the tide of killings and abductions in the country.

However, the Peoples Democratic Party knocked Buhari for the Zamfara girls’ school abduction, saying the President “wanders abroad,” while insecurity was rising in the country. 
 
The opposition party called on the President to hurry back home to address the security challenge. 
 
Confirming the attack on the GGSS, Moriki, on Thursday, the Zamfara State Police Command said though no pupil of the school was abducted, two caterers and their three children were kidnapped during the invasion. 
 
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mohammed Shehu, in a statement stated that armed men entered the school through the back fence with intent to abduct the schoolgirls. 
 
He stated that after being alerted the police went to the scene, confronted the armed men and stopped them from gaining access to the girls’ hostels. 
 
Sheu added, “The bandits took a retreat to the bush. No pupil was abducted as earlier reported by some media. However, two caterers and three of their children were later discovered missing. The police are collaborating with the school authorities to establish the whereabouts of the missing persons.” 
 
The PPRO disclosed that a search and rescue operation team had been dispatched to the surrounding bushes. 
 
“Security has been beefed up in the school and its environment to forestall further happening,” he added. 
 Zamfara seeks schools’ protection to avoid Chibok, Dapchi saga 
 
Reacting to the abduction, the Zamfara State Government said it was committed to ensuring security of its schools, adding that such places needed special protection. 
 
The Director General, Press Affairs, Bashir Ahmed, who spoke to one of our correspondents said, “The state government is committed to doing more to make places such as girls’ schools are more secure. 
 
“Such places need special protection and consideration to avert a recurrence of Chibok and Dapchi girls’ schools’ saga.” 
 Bandits operating freely as Buhari wanders abroad – PDP 
 
But the PDP urged President Buhari to immediately end his ‘private visit’ to the United Kingdom and return home to address the country’s deteriorating security situation. 
 
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, made the call in a statement in Abuja on Thursday. 
 
Ologbondiyan said it was unacceptable for Buhari to be pursuing undisclosed private matters abroad, while bandits and insurgents continue to kidnap and kill Nigerians. 
 
He said, “President Buhari’s inattention has emboldened insurgents and bandits to continue to overrun communities and unleash mayhem on citizens in Borno, Zamfara, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Taraba, Kaduna, Benue, Kogi and other states of the federation, including Buhari’s home state, Katsina. 
 
“While President Buhari wanders abroad, bandits are having a field day, pillaging communities in Katsina State; killing several persons and abducting the district head of his hometown, Daura, Musa Umar; the father in-law of Mr President’s security aide.” 
 
He added, “Within this period, marauders invaded communities in Adamawa and killed no fewer than 26 innocent Nigerians; many more have been killed in Borno, Taraba, Benue and Zamfara states, where bandits also reportedly attacked Government Girls’ Secondary School, Moriki, and kidnapped some schoolgirls. 
 
“While the Buhari administration remains virtually nonchalant, kidnappers have taken over many of our major highways, with hundreds of compatriots held in captivity in forests along the Kaduna-Abuja, Taraba-Katsina-Ala and other highways in the country.” 
 
The PDP spokesman claimed that Buhari had not displayed the required capacity to control the security situation. 
 
He said there were reports that some of the bandits arrested in states such as Katsina, were not Nigerians but aliens allegedly imported by the All Progressives Congress from Niger Republic to assist it in unleashing violence and rigging during the 2019 general elections. 
 
He said, “The fact remains that Buhari has completely failed our nation. In fact, his dereliction of duty is a clear signal that he has been practically overwhelmed, deflated and has nothing to offer. 
 
“The situation in Nigeria today signposts the terrible condition our nation will face if the presidential mandate is not retrieved at the tribunal to enable competent and uncompromised hands to run the affairs of our country. 
 
“The PDP, therefore, calls on Buhari to immediately return home and use the remaining part of his tenure to seek help instead of wandering abroad under the guise of private visits.”

The Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, in the February 23 presidential election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, have insisted that the Trader-Moni policy of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration was a vote-buying scheme that lacked budgetary backing. 
 
Atiku and his party described the policy as “illegal and corrupt extra-budgetary spending.” 
 
They stated this in their reply to the response by Buhari to their petition filed before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal to challenge the outcome of the February 23 election. 
 
Alleging manipulations and corruption in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration of Buhari and his All Progressives Congress as the winner of the poll, the petitioners urged the tribunal to declare them as the true winner.

They had alleged, among others, in the petition that in a bid to “improperly influence voters,” Buhari, “using his position as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, commenced a programme or a scheme called Trader-Moni, through which Nigerian electorate, most especially traders across the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, Abuja, were, few weeks to the presidential election, given N10,000 each.” 
 
They added, “In spite of the fact that there was no budgetary provision for this scheme; and in spite of public outcry against it, the 2nd respondent (Buhari), through the Vice-President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, went round all the states of Nigeria and the FCT, Abuja, and shared the said sum of N10,000 to traders, thus using state resources to buy votes.” 
 
In his reply filed through his lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Buhari denied the petitioners’ claim, insisting that Trader Moni was never a vote-buying measure. 
 
He said the policy was one of the many social intervention policies of the Federal Government provided for in the national budget to alleviate the suffering of the masses. 
 
But in their reply to Buhari’s response to the petition, Atiku and the PDP faulted the claim, contending that there was no such provision in the Appropriation Act permitting distribution of “scarce public funds” before and during the February 23 presidential election. 
 
The petitioners, through their team of lawyers led by Dr. Livy Uzouwku (SAN), noted that the National Assembly “vehemently protested” against the spending under the Trader Moni policy for not being appropriated for in the Appropriation Act. 
 
They stated, “Contrary to paragraphs 331, 332, 333, 334, 335 336, 337, 338, 339, 340, 341 and 342 of the 2nd respondent’s (Buhari) reply, the petitioners denied that there was a budgetary provision in any Appropriation Act permitting the distribution of scarce public funds before and during the election of February 23, 2019, to so-called traders under the guise of Trader Moni. 
 
“The petitioners further state that the National Assembly vehemently protested against the spending of un-appropriated funds.” 
 
The petitioners had earlier responded to the INEC and the APC which are the 1st and the 3rd respondents to the petition, respectively. 
 
No date has been fixed by the tribunal for the commencement of the hearing of the petition.

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi has denied obstructing or manipulating investigation into the murder of Olatoye Temitope a.k.a. sugar, who represented Lagelu/Akinyele federal constituency in the House of Representatives. 
 
The late lawmaker’s elder brother, Olajide Olatoye, on Thursday, accused Ajimobi and the Oyo State Assembly of facilitating the release of the suspected killers. 
 
Speaking through his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Bolaji Tunji, Ajimobi said the case was already before the police. 
 
The investigators, according to him, are already doing their job and have not contacted him on any challenges.

He added his government is known for never interfering with the course of justice. 
 
According to him: “If a citizen of the state dies, I am not sure the governor will be the one that will say people responsible for it should not be punished. 
 
“So, I think they should go and get their information right. The governor is not privy to that kind of information and he will not support sweeping such a case under the carpet. 
 
“So, if people are saying the governor is trying to facilitate the release of the principal suspect and others, it is not true. 
 
“The governor said when the man died that those who perpetrated the act would be brought to justice. And he has never said anything contrary to what he said when the man died, and that still stands. 
“What the family should do now is to tell the police to do their job the way it should be done.” 
 
He added: “I don’t know the kind of bold statement they are expecting the government to make. 
 
‘’The governor has already directed the security agencies to fish out the culprits, and they are on the case. 
 
“If the police are facing any challenge in their investigation, they are supposed to get across to the governor, and tell him their suggestions. The governor will now take it up from there. 
 
“I think they should go back to the police to find out how far they have gone in the matter instead of saying the governor wants to facilitate the release of the suspects. So, people should always get their facts right. 
 
“The governor will never be a party to a situation whereby an investigation being done by a statutory body will be compromised. The governor will never do anything that is against the law. 
 
“Why do we have peace in the state today? It is because people know that the governor will never act contrary to the law. 
 
“So, if people are saying the governor or the government is trying to subvert investigation, it is a no-no. The governor will never do that.”

Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the reaction of Governor-elect Seyi Makinde to the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage law as a signal that he is being haunted by his electoral promises, even before receiving the baton of governance. 
 
Makinde has faulted the fixing of the N30,000 minimum wage by the Federal Government, saying the individual state should have been allowed to determine what they could afford. 
 
He said he planned to set up a committee to negotiate with labour unions as soon as he is sworn in despite ongoing labour’s negotiation with the outgoing APC government. 
 
But, the Oyo APC, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Dr. AbdulAzeez Olatunde, said it was too early for Makinde to renege on his electoral promises.

He admonished the governor-elect to focus on the art of governance and work towards fulfilling his electoral promises. 
 
The party was reacting to the statement credited to the governor-elect’s spokesman, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who warned the APC against twisting Makinde’s interview in Abuja on the N30,000 minimum wage. 
 
The APC said the governor-elect and his handlers were just trying to stave off criticism on his unpreparedness to govern the state. 
 
The statement reads in part: “Makinde said during his electoral campaign that Oyo workers deserved more than N30,000 as minimum wage. Now, he was quoted by the media in Abuja that he can’t pay the N30,000 minimum wage. We (APC) decided not to comment on Makinde’s electoral promise U-turn because we want the electorate and the people of Oyo State to judge him while the party would not hesitate to provide the necessary constructive criticisms when the need arises.” 
 
The party advised Makinde and Oyelade to be ready to face governance from May 29 instead of acting like the opposition continually. 
 
The statement added: “The people of Oyo State deserve the best and we hope Makinde’s PDP will try not to disappoint, which is doubtful. It is too early for Makinde to be reprimanding others for his mistakes. APC was not the media that reported what Makinde said in Abuja. We expected Makinde to rather clear the air on his statement instead of blame shifting. We wish him the best in his endeavours, but with a caution that it is too early to renege on his electoral promises. 
 
“We want to urge him to tread softly on the issue of Hajj operations. He should by now know that pilgrimage is structured with timing for all, participating pilgrims throughout the world. It is not just about Oyo State pilgrims. We appeal to him to stop displaying his naivety about governance and remind him that not everything, especially pilgrimage is politicized.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan arrived yesterday in South Africa, where he will lead an observer mission to monitor the country’s general election scheduled for May 8. 
 
In a series of tweets, Jonathan said he would be heading the election observer mission of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA). 
 
The former president said democracy in the continent of Africa “has indeed turned the corner” as many countries are now holding peaceful elections. 
 
He said this has put power in the people to choose their leaders. 
 
“I arrived Johannesburg early this morning to lead the Election Observation Mission of the @EISAfrica to South Africa’s national and provincial elections,” the former president tweeted.

He went on: “Democracy has indeed turned the corner in Africa with many nations holding periodic and peaceful elections which put in the hands of the people the power to choose their leaders.” 
 
“I arrived in Johannesburg early this morning to lead the Election Observation Mission of the @EISAfrica to South Africa’s national and provincial elections.” 
 
This is not the first time that Jonathan will monitor an election in Africa. 
 
In 2017, he co-led a mission of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) to monitor Liberia’s presidential polls.

Two workers in the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports, Salisu Sabiu and Ibrahim Yola, have been arrested by operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl in the Dutse area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. 
 
NE learnt that 55-year-old Sabiu and Yola, 51, lived on the same street with the victim in the Dutse area and they were nabbed by operatives of the anti-trafficking agency after a tip-off by a resident. 
 
According to NAPTIP on Thursday, the two federal government workers have confessed to the crime and would be prosecuted under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015.

The NAPTIP Head of Press and Public Relations, Mrs Stella Nezan, in a release, said, “NAPTIP operatives arrested both workers of the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports, Abuja, for raping a 13-year-old girl. 
 
“The suspects, who live in the same neighbourhood with the victim, were arrested following a tip-off by a well-meaning Nigerian who learnt of the dastardly act being committed by the men against the underage girl. 
 
“Following their confession and admission of the offence, the suspects will be charged to court and prosecuted.” 
 
The NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, said the agency would ensure that justice was served in the matter through diligent prosecution. 
 
“I use this opportunity to draw the attention of everyone to the whistle-blowing policy of our agency. I encourage the public to embrace this policy in reporting suspected cases of human trafficking and exploitation. We assure the whistle-blowers of their complete anonymity and protection by the agency,” she added.

Over 2,000 Nigerian medical workers leave the country annually for developed countries, the Nigerian Medical Association has said. 
 
President of the Association, Dr Francis Faduyile, stated this at the Annual General Conference/Delegates meeting of the association in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State on Thursday.

“Without intent at generating further controversy on the matter arising from the unfortunate remark by a senior cabinet member of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who incidentally or coincidentally doubles as a senior member of the medical profession, it is our firm belief that this gathering will generates further statistics and facts that possibly will be enough in convincing those policymakers at critical MDAs of government at all levels, including the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity who perhaps have yet to come to reality with the scientifically unambiguous deleterious aftermath of the worsening disparity between the health workforce in general and the population. Then, they can join us in the clarion call for action and be committed to instituting necessary actions,” Faduyile said. 
 
Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole, also expressed worry at the increasing rate of brain drain in the country’s medical sector. 
 
Represented by the Chief Medical Director of Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Dr Emeka Onwe, the minister said the Federal Government was working hard to end the exodus of medical workers from the country. 
 
He said, “I am not particularly happy with the latest trend of doctors leaving the country to other lands for greener pastures. We shall continue to ensure that the welfare of the health workforce is improved. Our effort at centralising the internship posting of newly graduated doctors has received the support of the Federal Executive Council and will be rolled out within the year.” 
 
Prof Adewale said the FG had instituted a programme geared towards engaging doctors who had acquired latest skills and knowledge that would transform the health sector. 
 
“The ministry will continue to improve on these activities to encourage the diasporans to make increased contribution to our health care delivery,” he said. 
 
The minister also expressed concern over the inability of some state governments to recruit and keep medical doctors including specialists in their secondary and tertiary care hospitals. 
 
“In many cases, most local governments’ health facilities do not have a doctor. These are related to poor welfare and remuneration package at various levels amongst other factors,” he said. 
 
Declaring the conference open, the state Governor, David Umahi, promised to continue to support doctors and other health care practitioners in the state. 
 
He said his administration would commence the construction of a new teaching hospital in June for the state university’s medical school in Uburu.

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday inaugurated new buses under the Bus Reform Initiative with free rides on five routes. 
 
They were Berger to Tafawa Balewa Square, Berger to Oshodi, Oshodi to TBS, Ikeja to Alausa and Ikeja to Oshodi to commemorate the 2019 May Day 
 
The state government said normal bus services would start on Thursday. 
 
An official of the Lagos Bus Services Limited, operator of the buses, Mr Timi Olajide, said out of the 5,000 buses planned for the initiative, the state government would start with 820 high and medium capacity buses. He said, “Each bus has six emergency exits and a first aid kit, while every seat has a dedicated USB port for charging phones, free Wi-Fi, television and CCTV cameras linked to our control centre to monitor everything going on in the buses, among other features.

“We have also taken the issue of people with disabilities specially and there are seats reserved for them.” 
 
At the Oshodi Transport Interchange, a cross section of Lagos residents who enjoyed the free service, lauded Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the buses.

The Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday described youth unemployment in the country as a looming national disaster. 
 
The Anambra State NLC Chairman, Jerry Nnubia, stated this during the 2019 Workers’ Day celebration at Ekwueme Square, Awka, the Anambra State capital. 
 
He noted that youth unemployment accounted for the high rate of vices in the society. 
 
Nnubia added, “This trend should not be allowed to continue, otherwise it will spell doom economically, socially and politically for the country.

“For the government to overcome the unemployment crisis, there is need for more pro-growth policies geared towards attracting and improving private sector investment.” 
 
Nnubia called on the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission to release the minimum wage implementation table to enable Governor Willie Obiano to make good his promises of implementing the new minimum wage in the state. 
 
Also, the state Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Ifeanyi Okechukwu, expressed gratitude to Obiano for giving priority to workers’ welfare. 
 
He urged the governor to sustain the tempo, while urging him to promote deserving workers to enhance excellent service delivery. 
 
In his address, Obiano reaffirmed his commitment to implementing the N30,000 new minimum wage. 
 
He said, “I have formally declared the intention of my administration to pay the newly approved minimum wage in Anambra State. I will begin the implementation once the guidelines for the payment of the minimum wage are released by the Federal Government.”

The Anambra State House of Assembly has outlawed marriages involving people living with sickle cell anaemia. 
 
The bill was sponsored by the member representing Anaocha II state constituency, Charles Ezeani and 15 others. 
 
The law, to be cited as Sickle Cell Disease Control and Eradication Repeal, sought to eradicate sickle cell anaemia in Anambra State and set those living with it free from all kinds of oppression, abuse and exploitation. 
 
The law barred parents, guardians or group of persons from giving out their children/wards in marriage without verification of a qualified sickle cell disease prevention certificate.

It also provided that no religious body or marriage registry “shall perform solemnisation of Holy Matrimony” without first demanding and obtaining a sickle cell disease prevention certificate from intending couples. 
 
The law stated, “Anybody who contravenes the provisions of this section shall be guilty of an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine of N200,000 or three years imprisonment or both.” 
 
The law put in place a monitoring committee to ensure compliance. 
 
Speaking, the co-sponsor of the bill, Charles Ezeani, described the law as life-saving. 
 
He said the development would put a stop to the notion “that love is blind” by ensuring that intending couples must present their genotype test certificate before marriage. 
 
Ezeani commended the Speaker of the Assembly, Mrs Rita Maduagwu and other members for being the first to pass such health enhancement bill into law in the country. 
On her part, the National Coordinator of People Living with Sickle Cell Anaemia, Aisha Edwards, thanked the lawmakers for enacting a law that would protect the sickle cell patients from all forms of discrimination and marginalisation in the state.

The leader of traders in Lagos and the Iyaloja General of Nigeria, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, has said that some traders in the Computer village market who protested against the appointment of Iyaloja and Babaloja in the market on Tuesday were ill-informed. 
 
Addressing a press briefing on Wednesday, Tinubu-Ojo, said all the markets in the state were under her control and the computer village market cannot be an exception. 
 
According to our constitution, I can choose anybody from any local government in the state to head the market, all the iyaloja and babaloja in all the Lagos markets are my representatives in the market where they operate. Kindly educate them that phones, handsets, computers are commodities.

The Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, have faulted President Muhammadu Buhari for saying his academic certificates are with the Nigerian Army. 
 
Replying to Buhari’s response to their petition filed before the Election Petitions Tribunal, they said if it was true that the certificates existed, Buhari as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces could order the army to produce them. 
 
Atiku said he attached his academic certificates to the Form CF001 he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

In a joint petition filed on March 18, the former Vice-President and his party urged the tribunal to declare them the authentic winner of the February 23 presidential election, insisting Buhari did not possess the educational qualifications he claimed to have in his INEC Form CF001. 
 
They said in the reply filed on April 15 by their legal team, led by Dr Livy Uzoukwu (SAN), that having not been able to attach his academic certificates to INEC Form CF001, Buhari had falsely claimed that his certificates were in the custody of the Nigerian Army. 
 
The joint reply filed by Atiku and the PDP read in part, “In further response to paragraph 381(iv) of the 2nd respondent’s reply, aver that the petitioners have no knowledge of any certificates or alleged qualifications issued to the 2nd respondent (Buhari), but contend that 2nd respondent falsely represented that his certificates are in the custody of the Nigerian Army when the 2nd respondent by his own admission is the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria. 
 
“In further response to paragraph 381(iv) of the 2nd respondent’s reply, the petitioners aver that the 2nd respondent as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria could easily order the Army Secretary to produce the certificates allegedly submitted if they actually exist. 
 
“Contrary to paragraph 381(i-iv) of the 2nd respondent’s reply, the petitioners aver that the 2nd respondent does not possess the educational qualification he claimed to have in his INEC Form CF001 submitted to the 1st respondent (INEC) having not been attached as required.” 
 
The petitioners also stated that “the purported training and courses”, which Buhari claimed placed him “head and shoulders above” Atiku regarding educational qualifications to contest the presidential election, “did not culminate in the issuance of any certificates he claimed in his INEC Form CF001”. 
 
They also described Buhari’s claim of being head and shoulders above Atiku as “erroneous”. 
 
Responding to Buhari’s allegation that Atiku didn’t have the statutory educational qualifications to contest the polls, the petitioners stated that the ex-VP attached his educational qualifications to his Form CF001 submitted to INEC. 
 
Insisting Atiku was qualified to contest election for the office, the petitioners stated that Buhari was unable to present any certificates because he did not possess any “as he falsely claimed”. 
 
They stated, “In reply to paragraph 383 of the 2nd respondent’s reply, the petitioners aver that the 1st petitioner (Atiku) is eminently qualified to contest election to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and had indeed attached evidence of his educational qualifications to his INEC Form CF001 submitted to the 1st respondent, unlike the 2nd respondent (Buhari) who did not attach evidence of the qualifications he claimed in his INEC Form CF001 because he does not possess them as he falsely claimed.” 
 
INEC, Buhari, and the All Progressives Congress (Buhari’s party) are the 1st to the 3rd respondents to the petition. 
 
No date has been fixed for the hearing of the petition by the tribunal.

Twenty-six people have been feared killed and several others critically injured following a Boko Haram attack on a village in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State. 
 
 
According to reports the insurgents on Tuesday riding motorcycles, stormed the Kudakaya village in large numbers around 7pm on Monday. 
 
 
A local vigilante member said, “Many victims fell to the attack. I saw corpses of 26 people and there are several others that were critically injured and taken to hospital.” 
 
 
A former chairman of the Madagali LGA, Abawu Ularamu, supported the anonymous vigilante member’s account, and added, “They (Boko Haram) burnt several shops and many homes. They also stole food items. As I am talking to you now, we are living in an atmosphere of despair and agony for this attack. Over 20 people were killed while many were injured and rushed to hospital.”

He said the insurgents must have arrived the community from Sambisa, a forest in neighboring Borno State dreaded for being a hideout for Boko Haram despite its supposedly having been cleared of the insurgents by soldiers. 
 
 
"There is no doubt the attackers came from Sambisa. We experience such periodic attacks from Boko Haram, who usually look for food. They are not far from us. Any slight opportunity, they may strike again,” he said. 
 
 
The Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Othman Abubakar, confirmed the attack. “Yes, I was briefed that members of the dreaded Boko Haram insurgents have attacked the village.” 
 
 
Othman however could not confirm the casualty figure. He merely said, “I am yet to get the casualty figure but security operatives were deployed and are on the top of the situation." 
 
 
Madagali has since just before the March/April elections been frequently attacked by Boko Haram. It shares the bad luck of being haunted by the insurgents with nearby Michika LGA. Together, they are the two LGAs in Adamawa State that have been attacked by Boko Haram a number of times in the last couple of months.

Military operations against criminals are yielding the desired results, President Muhammadu Buhari said yesterday. 
 
According to the President, the Armed Forces have, by their efforts within the past four years, restored the pride and honour of Nigeria amongst the comity of nations. 
 
President Buhari spoke at the Eagle Square, Abuja as the Special Guest of Honour during the Parade/Orbat Flypast/Aerial Display by the Nigerian Air Force to commemorate its 55 anniversary.

Represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the President was treated to a colourful parade by the Six Commands of the NAF. He inducted two new Agusta 109 attack helicopters recently acquired by the service. 
 
At the event were: Chief of Defence (CDS) Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai; representative of the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) and Acting Inspector-General (IG) Mohammed Adamu. 
 
President Buhari said: “I am very delighted to be in your midst today to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the NAF. Since the establishment of the NAF in 1964 by an Act of the Nigerian Parliament, the Nigerian Air Force has been fulfilling its Constitutional mandate of preserving Nigeria’s territorial integrity through the employment and projection of air power. 
 
“As a country, we are particularly proud that in less than 4 years, we have been able to revitalise our armed forces for the full restoration of Nigeria’s territorial integrity that was once violated by Boko Haram insurgents. 
 
“As the air arm of the armed forces, the Nigerian Air Force has continued to play very crucial roles in degrading the fighting capabilities of the Boko Haram Terrorists in North East where our officers, airmen, soldiers and ratings have performed gallantly. 
 
“Once again, I salute the resolve of our Armed Forces and the invaluable contributions of other security agencies towards the defeat of Boko Haram and other security challenges bedeviling our dear nation. 
 
“Specifically, the contributions of the NAF in addressing the security challenges in the Northwest against armed banditry/cattle rustling and kidnapping is also appreciated. 
 
“Your efforts in conjunction with other security agents have started to yield positive results thereby restoring our pride and honour amongst the comity of nations. 
 
“I also want to thank Nigerians for coming together as a united and determined people, irrespective of political, religious and ethnic affiliations, to wage the war against terror and insurgency. 
 
“We are currently in the stabilisation, reconstruction and resettlement phase of the overall effort in the North East, and we continue to solicit for your support and understanding until terrorism is completely eradicated. We will not relent until every trouble spot within our territory enjoys enduring peace and order.” 
 
Chief Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar commended the President for the support given to the service in the past four years, saying the NAF have been able to acquire new platforms and establish new commands through the magnanimity of the President. 
 
The CAS said: “The 55 years of the existence of the Nigerian Air Force have been very eventful and during this period, the NAF was confronted with a myriad of challenges. However, we were able to surmount these challenges and progressively maturing in the process. 
 
“The NAF has also grown in size, spread and equipment holding all in a bid to fulfil its statutory obligation of protecting and defending the territorial integrity of Nigeria from the air. The growth of the NAF since the inception of the Service has been particularly outstanding. 
 
“From having only a few trainers and transport aircraft in the early years of the Service, the Nigerian Air Force currently has an impressive ORBAT comprising diverse aircraft with capabilities to perform a wide spectrum of missions. 
 
“We have also continued to build upon the foundations laid by our noble predecessors by reactivating several aircraft that were hitherto grounded; acquired and inducted various platforms into service and increased the strength of service personnel by 7,500 airmen/airwomen and 400 officers. Additionally, two new commands and two staff branches were established to meet the evolving security challenges we are faced with.”

The United Nations Population Fund has stated that Nigeria’s population has risen to 201 million people. 
 
This was contained in the 2019 State of the World Population Report released on Monday. 
 
From the World Population Dashboard released on the agency’s website, the UN stated that “Nigeria’s population is now 201 million, the largest in Africa, while its immediate neighbours – Benin Republic, Niger, Chad and Cameroon – are 11.8 million, 23.2 million, 15.8 million and 25.3 million people, respectively.”

The UN agency noted that “life expectancy at birth in Nigeria is now 55 years while the maternity mortality ratio is 814 deaths per 100,000 live births as of 2015.” 
 
It said that Nigeria’s growth rate was at an average of 2.6 per cent from 2010 to 2019, while the fertility rate among Nigerian women had dropped from 6.4 per cent in 1969 to 5.3 per cent in 2019. 
 
This can be interpreted to mean that an average Nigerian woman gives birth to at least five children. 
 
UNFPA said 32 per cent of Nigeria’s 201 million population figure were aged between 10 and 24 years, while those aged between 10 and 14 years were 44 per cent. 
 
Also, according to the report, Nigerians aged between 15 and 64 are 54 per cent while the population of those over 65 years is just three per cent. 
 
The report said, “Reproductive rights are still out of reach for too many women, including the more than 200 million women globally who want to prevent a pregnancy but cannot access modern contraceptive information and services. 
 
“Life expectancy in Nigeria at birth is now 55 years while the maternity mortality ratio is 814 deaths per 100,000 live births as of 2015. 
 
“Ultimately, almost all of the 4.3 billion people of reproductive age around the world today will have had inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health services at some point. 
 
“In 1969, the world population reached 3.6 billion, up about one billion from only 17 years earlier, leading to the establishment of UNFPA.”

“Avengers: Endgame,” the hugely-anticipated superhero series-ender from Marvel, set a new standard for Hollywood blockbusters this weekend with stunning hauls of $357 million in North America and $1.2 billion worldwide, industry data showed on Monday. 
 
The fourth and final chapter in the adventures of Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and company managed 43 times the domestic take of the No. 2 film, Marvel’s “Captain Marvel,” which made $8.1 million. 
 
With a star-studded cast including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Bradley Cooper and Josh Brolin, it took in a jaw-dropping $330 million in China alone, the highest ever opening in the Middle Kingdom.

With a sky-high 96 per cent rating from critics on the Rotten Tomatoes reviews website, “Avengers” could lead to “the biggest revenue-generating summer (and year) in box office history,” Comscore’s Paul Dergarabedian said. 
 
Packed with spectacular fight scenes, special effects, gags and tear-jerking moments, it almost doubled the previous world record opening weekend take held by its predecessor, “Avengers: Infinity War.” 
 
The movie cost around $500 million to make including marketing costs and was expected to break even during its debut weekend, a feat unheard of for a major blockbuster. 
 
Entertainment media are predicting a final global take of up to $2.5 billion, which would give it a place among the most lucrative movies of all time alongside “Avatar” ($2.8 billion), “Titanic” ($2.2 billion), “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($2.07 billion), and “Infinity War” ($2.05 billion). 
 
“(The) Marvel Studios team have continued to challenge notions of what is possible at the movie theatre, both in terms of storytelling and at the box office,” said Alan Horn, the chairman of Walt Disney Studios, which owns Marvel. 
 
– Around the clock screenings – 
 
Among the many other superlatives being thrown in Marvel’s direction, “Endgame” is the widest release in North American history, showing on 4,662 screens in the US and Canada, according to box office monitor Exhibitor Relations. It averaged $75,075 a screen — another record. 
 
Around the world, “Avengers” fans reserved their tickets well before the movie’s release. In India, 2.5 million tickets were pre-sold in a variety of languages including English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. 
 
Others who had failed to do their advance planning had to line up for hours at box offices to see the final instalment of the story that began with 2008’s “Iron Man.” 
 
In Venezuela, beset by blackouts, civil unrest and an economic crisis, fans got up before dawn to watch a special early morning screening, as evening shows were considered too risky in a country with sky-high crime rates. 
 
To meet exceptional demand in the United States, and taking into account the three-hour running time of the blockbuster, AMC cinemas organized around-the-clock screenings over the weekend in dozens of movie theatres across the country, often playing to packed houses. 
 
In total, the film became the biggest opening weekend box office hit in 44 countries, including Britain, Korea, France, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Italy and Spain, and broke records for one-day earnings in 29 countries. 
 
“From the very beginning with ‘Iron Man,’ all we’ve wanted to do was tell stories that brought these characters to life on screen the way we’ve experienced them as fans of the comics,” said Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios. 
 
– ‘Unbelievable’ – 
 
Feige, who has produced all 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ascribed the “unbelievable” success of the latest addition to “fans around the world who have supported us through it all.” 
 
Back on Earth, last week’s top film, Warner Bros.’ horror flick “The Curse of La Llorona,” slipped to third spot behind the two Marvel movies, with $7.5 million. 
 
It stars Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz and Patricia Velasquez in the story, loosely based on Mexican folklore, of a Los Angeles woman trying to protect her children from a ghost. 
 
In fourth place was “Breakthrough,” at $6.3 million. The faith-based story of a mother (Chrissy Metz) who refuses to abandon hope after her son (Marcel Ruiz) falls into an icy lake, was produced by NBA star Stephen Curry. 
 
And in fifth was Warner Bros.’ lighthearted superhero tale “Shazam!”, at $5.5 million. It stars Asher Angel as Billy Baston, an unhappy foster kid who becomes a muscular superhero (Zachary Levi) when the secret word is pronounced. 
 
Despite its title, “Avengers: Endgame” will not mark the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which Marvel made in partnership with Disney rival Sony, comes out in July.
