Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Kwara State, have arrested one Garuba Ashin, over alleged theft of a goat in his neighbourhood in Kaiama Local Government Area of the State.
Garuba who is a resident of Iwala area, Kaiama, was arrested on Thursday, according to the spokesman of the corps, Babawale Zaid Afolabi in Ilorin.
He said regular surveillance by the operatives of the defence corps, led to the arrest of the suspect following repeated reports and complaints of residents over their missing domestic animals in the neighbourhood.
“The intense surveillance carried out, paid off recently as one Garuba Ashin of Iwala area in Kaiama, was arrested while trying to steal goats belonging to Hossan Abubakar,” the spokesman revealed.

He said the suspect has been transferred to the NSCDC state command in Ilorin, while efforts are ongoing to round up other members of the gang.

The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Most Rev. Alfred Adewale-Martins says the South-East should produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor in 2023.
The cleric spoke at the weekend during the 2021 Catholic Women Organisation of Nigeria (CWON) meeting in Lagos.
Adewale-Martins said an Igbo becoming the country’s leader would amount to equity and justice.
The archbishop noted that other zones have occupied the number one position except the South-East.

He said true federalism would resolve the unending agitations for self-actualisation by ethnic nationalities.
Adewale-Martins insisted that the system of government Nigeria’s founding fathers wanted is not being practiced.
“The disenchantment of the citizens speaks volume of our dysfunctional system of federalism laced with the Nigerian factor as against the true practice,” NAN quoted him as saying.
The Archbishop lamented that many innocent people have been killed due to disunity and imbalance.
Charging women and youths to use their numbers to make a difference, Adewale-Martins urged stakeholders to always ensure “good persons” emerge as flagbearers.

Unknown gunmen have killed about 12 persons after storming the Sakajiki village in Kaura Namoda Emirate of Zamfara State.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Shehu explained that the casualties recorded in the incident would have been more if not for the timely intervention of the police operatives deployed in the area.
The PPRO further explained that the assailants arrived at about 9pm on Thursday and were at the area for several hours.
He said that about a dozen persons were killed as the attackers continued with their operation until around 4am on Friday.

The PPRO stated that the attackers set several shops and other houses ablaze, including an edifice of a police outpost in the area, as well as several vehicles – one of which was a police patrol van.
A source explained, “The persons who were confirmed dead were those whose bodies were brought to the open, while a search for those not seen was ongoing.”
The source noted that that the team of police mobile force operatives tried their best to repel the attackers, adding that the people were purportedly overpowered by the bandits.
He said another vehicle was set ablaze by bandits who attacked the village on October 14, 2021.
The PPRO explained that the Commissioner of Police in the state, had deployed an additional squad for reinforcement.
He promised the people of the area of the command’s determination to redouble its efforts to ensure that banditry was wiped out of the state.

Seven former Commissioners led by Asu Okang who recently left Governor Ben Ayade’s cabinet to align with Ayade’s political opponents in the PDP have lambasted the governor for not assenting to the anti-grazing bill like his counterparts in the South-South.
The commissioners under aegis of PDP Renaissance Group in a statement also charged the Cross River State House of Assembly (CRHA) to as a matter of urgency join other Southern states to domesticate the Anti-Open grazing law in the interest of regional security.
They also frowned at the Governor’s continual distancing from the South-South governors’ forum.
Okang expressed surprised that the state has been silent, even when there are clashes by herdsmen and farmers in the region.

“We note with utter dismay, that as at today, Cross River is still among the remaining three Southern states, whose Houses of Assembly are yet to consider or pass the Anti-Open grazing law.”
The group urged the state government to desist forth from privatising government owned assets listed by the state governor.

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and Police Service Commission (PSC) have commenced the process of concluding the 2020 enlistment of 10,000 Constables.
Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba made the announcement in a statement on Saturday.
Mba urged candidates to check their recruitment status on the portal, www.policerecruitment.gov.ng.
The website will be opened from Monday, 18th October to Tuesday, 26th October, 2021.

Candidates who qualify for the next stage must print out their slip and present on examination date – Friday, 29th October and Saturday, 30th October – at designated centres across Nigeria.
They were also advised to check their email and phone numbers for notifications.

Pero Adeniyi has reacted to being addressed as “Tuface’s first wife” by her friends, as they hung out in Abuja.
In a video which has gone viral on the Internet, her friends were hailing her and referring to her as ‘our first wife.’
They also addressed her as the only first wife Tuface has, adding that nobody or any other wife will take that position from her in his life.
“We are here with our In-law, Pero. This is our wife, Infact, this is the only first wife that Tuface has and nobody or any other wife will take her position,” they said.

Reacting, the US-based make-up artist who shares three children with the singer, laughed excitedly and did a short run before meeting up with her friends again.
This is coming after the recent crisis that rocked Tuface and Annie Idibia’s marriage.
Annie earlier called out the singer for sleeping over at Pero’s house in the US.
This led to a back and forth between Annie and 2face’s brother, Charles who accused Annie of assaulting the music legend and preventing his family from visiting their home.
Annie also swore to scatter their marriage, adding that she’s tired of the ill-treatment the idibias were dishing out to her.

For the fifth consecutive time, the arraignment of former Minister of Aviation, Mrs Stella Adaeze Oduah by the federal government on charges of alleged N7.9 billion Naira fraud has been put on hold.
The arraignment slated for Tuesday, October 19 at a Federal High Court in Abuja is this time around scuttled by the Eid el Maulud holiday just announced by the federal government to celebrate the birth of Prophet muhammad.
Mrs Oduah, now a Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District in the National Assembly has been billed to be arraigned on a 25-count charge alongside four others without success.
Findings on Saturday in Abuja revealed that this is the fifth time the arraignment of the former Minister would be stalled, having been previously fixed for February 9, February 22, April 19, July 12 and October 19 without headways.

A close look at the trial date notice issued by Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo of the Federal High Court who is billed to try the senator showed that the Tuesday October 19 for arraignment will not materialize due to Maulud holiday announced by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola on behalf of the Federal Government.
The Judge had on July 12 threatened to issue warrant of arrest for Mrs Stella Oduah should she fail to make herself available for trial on October 19.
The arrest threat was issued following her non appearance to honour court proceedings of July 12 without any explanation from her side.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is alleging that Mrs Oduah misappropriated the public funds while serving as a minister.
Other defendants are Gloria Odita, Nwosu Emmanuel Nnamdi, Chukwuma Irene Chinyere, Global Offshore, and Marine Limited, Tip Top Global Resources Limited, Crystal Television Limited, Sobora International Limited, and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) Nigeria Limited.
They are charged with conspiracy and money laundering as well as maintaining anonymous bank accounts.
When our correspondent contacted one of the court registrars, he disagreed that the arraignment is doomed, adding that a short day would be fixed to take the plea of the defendants.
“Please take note that the Muslim holidays are not fixed like others. They are based on when moon is sighted and this is what has just happened. The court is very much aware of the situation of the arraignment and I want to assure you that a short date would be fixed to take plea of all the defendants”, he said.
The prosecution counsel, Dr Hassan Liman, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, had on July 12 told newsmen that 32 witnesses have been lined up to testify against Senator Oduah and eight others with a view of establishing the fraud charges against them.

Nigerian rapper, Folarin Falana, AKA Falz has said Nigerian youths will not be silenced by anyone.
There are speculations that some citizens would mark the one year of the protests against police brutality and corruption with another protest.
Falz, while reacting to statement by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, barring interested persons from staging any EndSARS remembrance protest, said innocent people were killed just because they were asking not to be killed or brutalized.
However, writing on his Instagram page, the Singer alleged that since the unfortunate incident a year ago, no one has been punished for the crime.

He wrote, “20:10:20 (update) They killed innocent souls that were simply asking not to be killed or brutalized.
“A year later, no one has been punished yet for those heinous crimes.

“A couple of well meaning citizens decided to put together a summit to reflect on last year’s events & honour the lost souls. Event centre pulls out (“instructions from above”)
“As I type this, there is already HEAVY police presence at the Lekki toll gate.
“Best thing they could come up with is organizing “concerts” to try and distract us from remembering the real heroes in all of this. The people they murdered.
“What we will never do, however, is be quiet. We will NEVER EVER EVER EVER be silenced.
“Not today, not on the 20th, not ever.”
Meanwhile, the National Economic Council (NEC) on Friday advised Nigerians against protesting to mark the anniversary of EndSARS.
A statement signed by Laolu Akande, the spokesperson to Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, urged Nigerians to consider other lawful alternative means of engagement.
Akande stated that the advisory was because of the current security situation across the country and the possibility of such protests being hijacked by armed hoodlums.

Real Madrid striker, Karim Benzema, has insisted that the El Clasico is still the best game in club football, despite Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona.
Both LaLiga rivals clash at the Camp Nou on October 24.
Madrid are currently top of the table, while Barca are in ninth place.
Messi’s exit, following that of Cristiano Ronaldo from Madrid in 2018, has led some to question the current level of the two Clasico giants.
But Benzema still feels there is enough quality left in the two squads to put up a show.

“It doesn’t matter about the players who are there, who have left or who will join. Real-Barca is historic. Apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has chided President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina for comparing his principal with Nigeria’s late nationalists.
Ohanaeze, in a statement issued by the Secretary-General of the Chidi Ibeh-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and forwarded to newsmen on Saturday, said flAdesina comparing Buhari with Azikiwe and Awolowo is like comparing IDI AMIN DADA of Uganda to Britain’s Wilson Churchill.
Adesina had compared Buhari’s popularity to that of Azikiwe, Awolowo, Shehu Shagari and MKO Abiola.
Ohanaeze believes Azikiwe, Awolowo and others are incomparable to Buhari in all standards, adding that Adesina might be afraid of the entrance of Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Aviation Minister, into the mainstream Party.

The statement read, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide idolizes the immeasurable past contributions and legacies left behind by Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and others who worked with uncommon patriotism and selflessly that built a viable nation that functions, with the international community conceding that Nigeria remained Africa’s Pride in all ramifications, Azikiwe, Awolowo, and others had paid their dues for the country without resorting to nepotism, foreign loans, abuse of power and ineptitude leadership as witnessed by Nigerians since 2015, should be accorded with some respect.
“Yes, Femi Adesina was right because Buhari is greater than Azikiwe and Awolowo. Super Eagles and Napoli star, Victor Osimhen, in an interview with compatriot William Troost-Ekong on YouTube has opened up on his journey to becoming a professional footballer and how he did menial jobs to survive.

Osimhen, who was born in Lagos, completed an €80m deal to move from Lille to Napoli in the summer of 2020 becoming the most expensive African player of all time.
The 22-year-old, a product of Ultimate Strikers Academy made his breakthrough when he signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Wolfsburg in 2017.
He then moved to Belgium and France playing for Charleroi and Lille.
He scored 18 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions with the Ligue 1 side before moving to Napoli on a permanent deal.
In his debut season in Naples, the Nigeria international scored 10 goals in 24 Serie A appearances at Stadio Maradona.
However, in the video posted on the Troost-Ekong YouTube page, the Napoli striker opened up on his road to stardom.
“It all started like a dream, a boyhood dream from the slum,” the 22-year-old said in an interview with his compatriot Troost-Ekong on YouTube.
“I wanted to become a professional player, inspired by a lot of big legends like Didier Drogba, Odion Ighalo, Mikel Obi and many others.
“I feel like I have achieved this feat, it’s one of my biggest achievements in life,” the former striker added.
“Most people familiar, when I say this because they have come through even worse than mine and where I grew up nothing is promised there because whatever you want to get you to have to work so hard for it.
“I remember when I was growing up I was cleaning the gutters for 20 Naira, for my landlord and did some cleaning jobs for my neighbours close to my hours, fetch the water for 80 Naira I think.
“I found pleasure in doing these things because I believe when I worked so hard to get this money it was important for me, I had consciousness on how to spend this money and help my family.
“While growing up my brother was selling newspapers, my sister oranges. I was in the traffic with water and I’d had to chase cars, give them the water to get the money. I feel like these struggles helped me in life.
“I am grateful for where I am today because of what I’ve been through, it shaped me into the man I am. I am really grateful to God for that.”
Osimhen has had a great start to the 2021-22 campaign with seven goals in eight games across all competitions.
His contract with the Partenopei expires in June 2025.

Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, has received a huge boost after Romelu Lukaku successfully navigated a training session ahead of the Brentford clash.

Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, has conducted forensic psychological assessment and evaluation for its armed personnel.
The exercise was designed to determine the armed personnel’s psychological status and fitness.
Spokesman of the defence corps, Babawale Zaid Afolabi, in Ilorin, said the assessment became imperative in order to mitigate the misuse of firearms and cases of accidental discharge by the arms bearers.
“The Commandant General, Ahmed Audi, directed the Forensic and Behavioral Unit, NSCDC, national headquarters, Abuja, to carry out the exercise across all the 36 state commands with the aim of assessing their forensic and psychological fitness level in order to avoid any misuse of firearms by the personnel,” Babawale stated.

The Head of NSCDC Forensic and Behavioral Unit, Abuja, Dr Teeso Shapers, who conducted the exercise, said it was a proactive measure to prevent unprofessional use of firearms by the personnel.
The forensic unit is saddled with responsibilities which include criminals nap, psychological profiling of suspects, expert witness testimony and forensic analysis of physical digital and computer evidence.

America’s Got Talent judge, Howie Mandel has been discharged from the hospital after collapsing in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
It was reported that Mandel was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at a Starbucks, a coffee shop in Woodland Hills, California on Wednesday.
Howie suffered the medical episode while grabbing coffee with his wife and friends at one of the coffee chain’s outposts in Woodland Hills.
However, the 65-year-old while giving an update on his health status in a tweet on Thursday, revealed he had low blood sugar.

He also revealed that he was home after being discharged and was doing better.
“I am home and doing better. I was dehydrated and had low blood sugar.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Jessica Roselyn Edoleyi, Charles Endurance and Ayase Destiny before Justice S. M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court in Benin, Edo State.
The trio were docked for offences bordering on obtaining by false pretense, intent to defraud and impersonation.
Edoleyi allegedly obtained N2,550,000 from Airiohuodion Efosa on the pretext of securing a Canadian visa for him.
Endurance and Destiny allegedly impersonated the identities of Roland Scout, Sina Joorachi and George Lawrence to defraud foreign nationals.

The EFCC said Edoleyi committed an offence contrary to section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under same section.
Ayase claimed to an American medical doctor and sent his picture to unsuspecting ladies abroad through the internet to obtain money dubiously
The offence was contrary to section 22 (2)(b)(ii) of the Cybercrime (prohibition, prevention etc) Act 2015 and punishable under section 22(2)(b)(in) of the same Act.
Endurance was charged for the same offence. All defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges.
The prosecution counsel, K. U. Udus and K. Y. Bello prayed the court for a trial date and an order to remand the defendants in prison pending trial.
In his ruling, Justice Shuaibu adjourned the matter until October 18, 2021 for hearing of the bail application.
The trio will remain at a facility of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

A man identified as Jacob Joel has been remanded in a Jos Correctional Centre for allegedly defiling an 11-year-old girl.
The victim is a friend to the defendant’s daughter, the police informed the court.
Joel, 42, perpetrated the act when the victim went to visit his daughter.
According to NAN, the prosecutor, Mrs L. P. Fombot told the judge that the minor did not meet her friend.

Fombot said the accused, who was home alone, dragged her into his room, scared her with a knife and had carnal knowledge.
The police officer added that Joel threatened the girl on several occasions, raping her repeatedly.
Joel was eventually caught by a school teacher when he took the minor to the bush for his usual defilement.
The defendant pleaded “not guilty” to the crime despite blaming the devil during police interrogation.
Justice S. P. Gang ordered his remand in prison until December 7. Joel risks life imprisonment.

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, has showered encomiums on the Senate for reversing itself over the issue of electronic transmission of votes.
It was reported that the Senate finally bowed to public pressure as it passed an amendment allowing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to transmit election results electronically without having recourse to any other approval from any quarter.
Reacting to the development, the President-General of OYC, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike said it was victory for democracy.
Okwu said in a statement made available to newsmen that “we are delighted that the National Assembly has finally redeemed its image.

“When a few weeks back the Federal lawmakers went against popular wishes of the people, we were one of those that cried on top of our voices; we were saddened then because we saw it as another opportunity lost to save the future of this nation.
“However, we are glad that the lawmakers have made a u-turn and bowed to the wishes of the people; that is the spirit of true representation.
“This development is a victory for Nigerians; it is a victory for democracy and we will cherish it for a very long time.
“Now that this hurdle has been cleared on the way of INEC, it has no reason again not to give Nigerians a credible election. We expect nothing but the best, with the Anambra election in our mind.”
He urged the National Assembly to continue to be on the side of the masses and not the powers that be, stressing “this is also very paramount as they commence budget defence by ministries, agencies and MDAs. They should always be guided by their oath which is to do all things that will promote the interests of Nigerians not any single individual.”

Former Nigeria youth international, Emmanuel Sarki has opened up on why he dumped the country to play for Haiti.
Sarki impressed for the youth teams, including the Golden Eaglets, the Flying Eagles and the U-23 side.
The Kaduna-born winger seemed destined to progress to the Super Eagles, but earned a call-up to the Haitian national team in 2014.
This came eight years after his last call-up to the Nigerian U-23 side.

Sarki has now claimed he shelved the idea of playing for Nigeria when he was asked to pay to do so.
The forward jumped at the chance to represent the Grenadiers, having been eligible through his maternal grandfather.
“There were people demanding I pay £5,000 just to make sure Nigeria called me up.
“What? I have to pay to play football for my country? No way, I’m not doing that. But my grandfather had come from Haiti to Nigeria as a missionary, I had his birth certificate, and there was another Haitian in the team at Wisla, who called the Haitian Football Federation president and told him all about me,” Sarki told the Athletic.
However, Sarki has stopped playing football because of his air sickness.
He added: “It was too stressful for me. I said to them I was really sorry but I’m done. I don’t want to travel that far. I was throwing up on the flights; I felt dizzy.”
“To represent them was really amazing but now I’m getting old. I’m 33, taking it easy, just balling. I have a young son, Samuel, and my fiancee is Polish. I am home.”

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the National Assembly to enact law that would stop government officials from sending their children abroad to study.
ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke who made the call on Thursday in Abuja at the reconvened meeting with the Federal Government, being conciliated by the Minister of Labour and Employment, said the officials must be compelled to enroll their children in Nigerian Universities.
According to him, making it compulsory for the public office holders to enroll their wards in public schools in Nigeria would force them to fix the challenges in public schools.
Osodeke said, “We are hoping that the government will make it mandatory that if you accept any government appointment, your children must attend universities in Nigeria.

“The National Assembly must formulate a law that if you take an appointment, your children must study in the country. If you know that your children cannot be here, then there should be no need to accept government appointments”.
Speaking on the 2022 budget, Prof Osodeke expressed disappointment, stating that the education sector has been totally neglected.
According to him, despite the outcries by the union, there was no change in the education budget.
“Look at the budget we have seen recently, it is exactly the same thing we have been seeing. Nothing has changed. And this country is paying the high price for neglecting education – the banditry you see, the kidnapping and what have you, is because people are not being taken care of.
“That is why ASUU has been struggling, so that public universities in the country will be revamped, so that as our children go outside for learning, other children from other countries will also come here for the same purpose too and pay to this country in hard currency,” he said.
The Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige said some of the request by the union were within the reach of the Federal Government, stressing that the public universities will not be abandoned.

<div>Falana, who is the Interim Chairman, Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond, said this in a statement on Thursday titled, ‘Nigeria Police Force Lacks Power to Ban Public Protests in Nigeria’.</div>

<div>The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, had said the police would not allow anyone to stage another #EndSARS protest ahead of the one-year anniversary of the protests of last year.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>However, Falana said Buhari who himself took part in protests while he was running for office, should call on the police to respect the rights of citizens.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>He added, “It is public knowledge that General Muhammadu Buhari (as he then was) and other leaders of the ruling All Progressive Congress took part in public rallies against fuel hike in January 2012 and protests against insecurity in November 2014.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>“To that extent, the Buhari administration ought to restrain the Police from banning peaceful rallies against police brutality on October 20, 2021 in any manner whatsoever and however.”</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Falana noted that the law guarantees Nigerians the right to hold public meetings, rallies and processions in the country.</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>“The threats against peaceful rallies oozing out of the police headquarters and state commands are illegal as they constitute a gross infringement of the fundamental rights of the Nigerian people to freedom of expression and freedom of assembly guaranteed by Sections 38 and 40 of the Nigerian Constitution as well as Articles 9 and 10 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights Act,” the activist added.</div>

<div>He recalled that in the case of the All Nigeria People’s Party v Inspector-General of Police 2006, Justice Anwuli Chikere declared that police permit as a precondition for holding rallies in Nigeria was illegal and unconstitutional.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The judge consequently granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining the Inspector-General of Police and other police officers from preventing Nigerian citizens from convening and participating in rallies.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>“The appeal of the police against the judgment was dismissed by the Court of Appeal in December 2007. In the unanimous decision of the court, their lordships described police permit as ‘a relic of colonialism’ which is anomalous in a democratic society,” Falana said.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>He added that based on the landmark judgment of the Court of Appeal, the National Assembly amended the Electoral Act 2010 in March 2015 to impose a duty on the police to provide security for participants in public meetings and rallies.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 94 (4) of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) provides: Notwithstanding any provision in the Police Act, the Public Order Act and any regulation made thereunder or any other law to the contrary, the role of the Nigeria Police Force in political rallies, processions and meetings shall be limited to the provision of adequate security as provided in subsection (1) of this section,” the senior advocate said.</div>

<div>He added that Section 83 (4) of the Police Establishment Act 2020 provides that where a person or organisation notifies the police of his or its intention to hold a public meeting, rally or procession on a public highway or such meetings in a place where the public has access to, the police officer responsible for the area where the meeting rally or procession will take place shall mobilise personnel to provide security cover for the meeting, rally or the procession.</div>

<div>“In view of the fact that the police authorities have been notified of the public rallies scheduled to hold on October 20, 2020 to mark the first year anniversary of the #EndSARS protests, the Nigeria Police Force is required to make arrangements for the provision of adequate security for the participants at the venues of the rallies,” Falana said.</div>

<div>He called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Usman Alkali, to direct the Commissioners of Police in all the states of the Federation to ensure that adequate security is provided for all citizens who may wish to protest against the policies of the government which are considered inimical to their interests.</div>

Nigeria’s famous pop singer, Innocent Idibia, popularly known as ‘2baba’, has urged youths in Anambra to be agents of peace and shun violence during the Nov. 6 governorship poll in the state.
Idibia made the call on Thursday in Awka at the ongoing “Vote Not to Fight” campaign organised by the Catch Them Young Community Initiative (CATYCOI), in collaboration with the 2Face Idibia Foundation.
The campaign is supported by the National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
He said: “We are here to dialogue with Anambra youths and campaign for peace, especially, as we prepare for the election.
<a name='more' id="more"></a>“Our youths are critical stakeholders; this is why politicians use them to cause violence. I want to tell you that violence has no gain but destroys lives and property.
“As youths, we need to promote peace, because without peace; the election cannot be free, fair and credible, and development too, cannot take place.
“Let us be aware that election is not war but a time for us to participate by voting wisely for the candidate that can help secure our future,” he said.
Idibia urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies to discharge their duties without any form of bias.
He also urged the electorate to cooperate with the security agencies to ensure a violence-free election on November 6.
Also speaking, Mr Ben Aga, Programme Director, NDI, said that the institute would always support programmes and campaigns that would ensure the effectiveness of the democratic process in the country.
Aga said that the NDI recognised the youth as assets and future of the country as well as key stakeholders in achieving a peaceful election in the state.
Contributing, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, Eworo Echeng, said the force was committed to ensuring the safety and security of residents before, during and after the election.
Echeng, represented by ACP Emma Ogbuanya, said that they were collaborating with other security agencies, CSOs, community and traditional leaders in the area of intelligence gathering.
While appealing to the youth to embrace peace, he also urged the electorate to come out and vote on election dates without fear of attacks or harassment.
In his remarks, Mr Nonso Orakwe, the Executive Director, CATYCOI, said that the role of youths in election-related violence had been particularly dynamic, as they had been perpetrators and victims at the same time.
“Due to eroding societal values and poverty, youths are easy recruits for attacks and violence during elections. With this campaign, we want to change the narratives and become ambassadors of peace in our nation,” Orakwe said. (NAN)

Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, has appealed to the media to stop shunning governors’ wives.
She spoke Wednesday night in Abuja at an event where some first ladies were honoured.
Aisha, the Special Guest of Honour, was represented by her spokesman, Aliyu Abdullahi.
Aisha commended the wives of governors who have been assisting women, the elderly, the poor and the less-privileged.

The Supreme Court will at 12 noon on Thursday pronounce judgment a suit challenging the candidacy of Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo as the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra.
The apex court’s decision will determine whether the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will be allowed to contest in the November 6 gubernatorial poll.
Justice Mary Peter Odili, who presided over the proceedings of Thursday, announced that the final decision of the court will be made known in one hour’s time.
At the time of this report, palpable tension and apprehension have enveloped the premises of the court with two camps of the two parties anxiously awaiting the court decision.

The Court of Appeal Court sitting in Abuja had in September ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Soludo as the candidate of the APGA.
The three-member panel headed by President of the Appeal Court, Monica Dongban Mensem, had also declared Victor Oye as National Chairman of APGA.
Justice Jummai Sankey, while delivering ruling on the appeal filed against Sylvester Ezeokenwa and five others, held in a unanimous decision that the appeal constituted an abuse of court process, having been bound by the decision of the Kano division of the Court of Appeal that affirmed Chief Oye as APGA National Chairman.
The panel said it lacks jurisdiction to do what the appeal by Chief Edozie Njoku and Chinedu Okoro was seeking as it can not sit on appeal of its previous decision.
The sum of N10 million was therefore awarded against the appellants, in favour of Sylvester Ezeokenwa and All progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) who are the first and second respondents in the appeal.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibadan Zonal Command, has arrested 22 “Yahoo Boys” for alleged involvement in internet fraud.
The suspects were identified as Akintunde Ibrahim Olajide, Yusuf Taiye Afeez, Jimoh Idris Okikiola, Adeyemo Wariz Adegoke, Ademola Olalekan Saheed, Anif Abayomi Busayo, Oriade Sunday Oluwatobi, Ajadi Opeyemi Damilola.
Others include, Peter Akanji Blessing,Olaoluwa Felix Oguniran, Agbei Shola Peter, Toheeb Adeagbo Tola, Ajayi Akinyinka Umar, Ibrahim Opeyemi Ishola, Samson Shonubi Oluwafemi, Oki Kayode Oluwadunsi, Durosamo Temitope Dickson, Akinremi Ridwan Abiodun, Ahmed Ogunyele and Olawore Ridwan Olalekan.
They were apprehended during an operation at their hideout in Ogbomoso, Oyo State based on intelligence on their alleged criminal activities.

At the point of their arrest, five cars, several mobile phones, laptops and other incriminating documents were recovered from them.
The Commission said twenty of the 22 suspects have been indicted by investigation.
It added that they would be charged to court as soon as the investigation was concluded.

Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan has tasked Senate Committees to be critical and question any possible overpricing of items contained in proposals submitted by the executive arm of government.
Lawan handed down the charge on Wednesday after the plenary in Abuja as Committees were due to commence budget defence of Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government from Monday.
He emphasised that resources of government must be prudently managed, stressing that it wasn’t about annual budgets alone, but its judicious implementation that would transform the lives of Nigerians.
He said: “I want to add that our Committees will start budget defence from Monday and of course, we are going to suspend plenary from today and like we said before, our Committees must remain critical of proposals submitted to us by the executive arm of government.

“We must ensure equity in the distribution of projects.
“We must ensure economy in the application of funds. We must question any possible overpricing of items and we should at the end of the day, have a budget that covers the interest of all the communities across the country.”
The Senate President commended lawmakers for the expeditious handling of the 2021 appropriation that saw the implementation from January to December fiscal year, while he expressed optimism that they will repeat the same thing to pass the 2022 appropriation before the end of December.
“I am sure that we are ready to repeat the feat in passing the 2022 bill into law before the end of December,” he said.
He further charged all relevant Committees that oversight revenue generating agencies to rise to the occasion of ensuring that the agencies work hard to improve the nation’s revenue in 2022.
Lawan’s charge was at the backdrop of fears expressed by some Senators on the challenge of funding the 2022 budget amid high rate of debt servicing.
“Distinguished colleagues, I agree completely with those who raise the issue of revenue generation, collection and remittances into the coffers of the Federal government.
“The agencies that are supposed to collect and remit would have to be tasked and this 2022 appropriation bill shows that we have N400 billion coming in especially from these agencies as additional revenues.
“We need to do better. We need to make sure that the revenue agencies must submit revenue that they generate. We need to also invest in our people, education for our youth particularly and of course health.
“Distinguished colleagues, borrowing like most of us said is not bad. What we need to do is to ensure that what we borrow is prudently deployed to those areas of capital infrastructural development. The three Committees that are oil related, petroleum upstream, petroleum downstream and gas need to be very alert to implementation of the petroleum industry act. This is very important because this act that we passed here is to transform the petroleum industry.
“At this formative stage of the transformation, there is need for us to be vigilant and oversight very closely to ensure that the taking-off is successful.
“Our oversight by Committees must be very purposely and at all times for the sole reason that government funds are prudently applied to the projects appropriated for,” he stated.

Zamfara State Government has assured of its readiness to deploy security operatives to schools in the State for adequate protection of the students and their teachers.
Governor Matawalle said that it was due to insecurity that forced his administration to shut down all the institutions in the state, saying that he would soon reopen the schools.
He disclosed this when some students paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Gusau, the State capital, as part of activities marking the International Day of the Girl Child.
It was reported that the Governor vacated his seat to Zainab Bello, a J.S.S two student of Unity School, Kortokoshi for almost an hour to act as the Governor of the State.

Zainab Bello performed one of functions of the Governor by posting a Commissioner-designate, Hon. Fa’ika Ahmed to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.
Bello assured that she would protect the rights and promote the education of the Girl Child in the State, as part of her development agenda for the State.
However, the Governor promised that his administration would pay its counterpart funds for the year 2021 Universal Basic Education (UBEC) and would continue to improve the standard of education, especially of the girl child in Zamfara State.
In her response, the Chairperson of High -Level Women Advocate (HLWA) Maryam Na’inna said that the significance of the International Day of the Girl Child could not be overemphasized.
The event was attended by two former deputy governors of the State, Hon. Mukhtar Anka and Mallam Ibrahim Wakala Liman, the Chief of Staff, Commissioners -designate and other relevant stakeholders.

The All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA), has revealed the rationale behind the defection of the Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Nkem Okeke, to the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Anambra State.
Tex Okechukwu, the National Publicity Secretary of APGA, in a statement forwarded to newsmen, on Wednesday night, alleged that the inability of the Deputy Governor to secure the governorship ticket of the party for the November 6 Anambra gubernatorial election necessitated the latter’s defection to the APC.
Recall that the Deputy Governor, Nkem Okeke, who first served as Anambra State Commissioner for Economic Planning, was welcomed into the APC by President Muhammadu Buhari, during a meeting on Wednesday, in Abuja.
But Okechukwu disclosed that the defection of the Deputy Governor was long expected as he had been grudging everybody over his failure to secure the APGA ticket during the just concluded primaries.

He also described as of no consequence, the deputy governor’s movement into the fold of the main opposition All Progressive Congress in Anambra State.
According to him, “the deputy governor had thought that the governor and the party were going to hand over the governorship ticket of the party in the last primary to him on a platter. When that didn’t happen, he started behaving abnormally, even to the point of insubordination and dereliction of duties”.
Okechukwu further revealed that APGA leadership viewed Okeke’s exit, without formal notification to the party or principal as uncalled for and ill-advised as Governor Willie Obiano had always treated him with respect, love and consideration.
He called on Governor Obiano not to be distracted by Nkem Okeke’s defection, which according to him, was a ploy to create a semblance of disunity in his government.
Okechukwu also urged the Anambra Chief Executive to remain resolute in delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.
The national spokesman, who equally used the medium to frown at the desperation being displayed by the opposition APC in the build-up to the coming Anambra governorship election, called on members of the party to remain united to ensure that APGA wins the poll with wider margins.
Parts of the statement read, “Let nobody be deceived: APC has no root anywhere in Anambra State and that is why all that they do is going about luring political deadwood with money and other lucres.
“No matter the designs of the opposition and other subterranean forces, APGA is poised to win the forth coming election and continue with the massive infrastructural development going on in the state”.

Ahead of the November 6th, 2021 Anambra Governorship elections, Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba has revealed that the Police is in possession of intelligence showing that subversive elements are planning to threaten the process and the smooth conduct of the election.

Alkali Baba who spoke while declaring the one day Squadron Commander’s Conference in Abuja, also warned of severe consequences for those involved in unprofessional conduct and other infractions being committed by PMF personnel across the country especially as it pertains to illegal deployments.
 
He said, “As you are aware, the Anambra governorship election will hold on 6th November, 2021. The election security action plan will as usual revolve Units of the Mobile Police Force. The import of this is that most of your operatives will be deployed to deter subversive elements that are planning to threaten the process, while others will be deployed to secure personnel and materials of INEC, as well as other critical national infrastructure”.
“While the detailed operational action plan in this regard will form a key part of our discourse during this conference, I must strongly warn you to ensure that you demonstrate high level of professionalism, strong supervisory capacity on your units, and the firmness and courage which are the traditional hallmarks of the Police Mobile Force”.
“I charge you to cultivate the spirit of team work and inter-agency cooperation, knowing that you will operate side by side other sister security agencies and officials of INEC. Above all, you must remain apolitical while being ruthless with violent elements and ill-guided political thugs that may wish to test our common will to deliver a transparent and credible electoral outcome”.
Disclosing that plans are on to reposition the PMF as one of his Police leadership agenda, IGP Baba said, “In furtherance to this, all the Squadron Commanders shall be leaving this conference with new sets of operational assets which have been approved for issuance with a view to sharpening your operational capacity”.
 
“Plans are also underway to issue more weaponry and operational vehicles to enhance your operational mobility and combat ability. The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of operations has also been tasked to commence the process of training and re-training of operatives of the PMF in order to strengthen your operational capacity and exposing you to modern tactical and combat requirements”.
Continuing the IGP told the Squadron Commanders, “Citizens of this country are worried about the illegalities of some bad eggs within the fold of the PMF as well as the tendency for corruption by some others. These misconducts are direct consequences of supervisory ineptitude by some of you, the Squadron Commanders.
“Much as I am determined to motivate you to advance your mandate as the striking arm of the force, let none of you be in doubt of my firm resolve to deal decisively with any Squadron Commander that lacks command capacity as well as those who are unwilling to key into our mission of reforming the PMF and repositioning the force”.
“Discipline, professionalism and operational excellence are the bedrocks of PMF. Any personnel that is deficient in any of these has no justification to remain within the PMF system as they are not only dangers to the force, but to the nation. Accordingly we shall not spare any PMF operative that continues to conduct himself or herself in manners that are not edifying to the Nigeria Police force.
“Consequently, the AIG PMF has been directed to put machinery in motion to identify and rationalize such incorruptible elements out of the PMF”, the IGP said.

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has stressed the need for the people of South South region to shun politics of violence, noting that democracy does not require the use of arms but the building of consensus for development
Diri made the remark during a one-day zonal prayer summit organised by the South South zone of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at Saint Patrick Catholic Church, Ovom, Yenagoa.
Governor Diri stated that politics should be seen as a means to develop the people and not to kill and disunite them.
A statement sent to newsmen on Wednesday, by the Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, quoted the Governor as saying that Christians should not avoid politics as even Jesus Christ was concerned about the welfare of the people, which politics is all about.

He urged people of the region to embrace politics of development, adding that the South South is blessed with a lot of potential to be great but that greatness can only be achieved if the people were united.
He again justified the decision of the South South governors to ban open grazing, stressing that herders should not be allowed to use their business to destroy that of the farmers.
Governor Diri appreciated the South South Zone of CAN for the prayer summit and urged the church not to relent in praying for the region and the country.
His words: “Politics is about the welfare of people, which Jesus did. So we should not fight ourselves. There is no difference between the church and government.
“South South is a blessed region. Let us pray that God will give us leaders that will see the potential and develop the region.
“If we cooperate, it will be difficult for any other region to beat us. It is not all about oil. South South is rich in agric and other resources. But we need peace for investors to come in.
“A lot of times we are misunderstood. You can only contrast militancy to Boko Haram but you cannot compare them.
“If we are united as Southerners, there are a lot of benefits. Our economy will boom as we have the potential. Ultimate power belongs to the people. Always look for alternative ways to call government to order rather than resort to protest as the first step to resolve issues.”
Diri thanked National President, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Wale Oke, and others for being steadfast in prayers and fasting to ensure that Bayelsa did not go into the wrong hands.
In a welcome address, the CAN South South Zonal Chairman, Archbishop Israel Ege, said the essence of the summit was to seek the face of God for development of the region and country at large.
He lauded the Governor for his developmental efforts and prayed God to continue to bless him with the grace to serve people of the State.
Delivering a sermon, Bishop Wale Oke said the nation was passing through challenges that God alone can solve, stressing that nothing was impossible for God.
Describing the South South as the sustainer of Nigeria, he expressed regrets that the region had not got what it deserved from the country and urged the people to continue to seek the face of God.

All Progressives Congress (APC) co-founder, Bola Tinubu received former Ogun Governor, Gbenga Daniel, on Tuesday.
 
Tinubu hosted Daniel, an APC chieftain, at his Bourdillon residence in Ikoyi.
 
Though details were not made public, it was gathered that Daniel’s visit was mainly to welcome the erstwhile Lagos Governor.
 
Daniel, who joined the APC this year, was Director-General of PDP’s Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign in 2019.

Actor Williams Uchemba, has called on parents to be very protective of their children at all cost as Disney unveiled new superman as bisexual.
The actor made the call a few hours after Disney announced that Jon Kent – the Superman of Earth and son of Clark Kent and Lois Lane- is bisexual.

Salami Yusuf Adetola, a citizen who claimed to be a United States lottery agent, has been sentenced to six months in jail for impersonation and cybercrime.
Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court in Ilorin convicted Adetola on Tuesday.
He was sentenced alongside AbdulKareem Abdulmojeed Olamilekan, a graphic designer from Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State and Nwabudike Emmanuel Lawrence from Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State for a similar offence.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the trio on separate charges. They all pleaded guilty.

EFCC counsel, R. A. Alao called witnesses (detectives) who tendered evidence, including fraudulent messages and the devices used to perpetrate the crime.
Justice Akinpelu held that the prosecution proved its cases beyond reasonable doubt.
Adetola was sentenced to six months in prison with N200,000 fine; Olamilekan was sentenced to one year imprisonment with N300,000 fine.
Lawrence bagged a prison term of six months on each of the two counts with an option of N200,000 fine.
The convicts will lose phones and laptops used for the offences to the federal government and must refund their victims.

Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo has promised to “always be looking for more and more and more” after scoring a hat-trick in Portugal’s World Cup qualifier 5-0 win over Luxembourg on Tuesday.
Ronaldo scored his 58th career hat-trick, his 10th for Portugal as Fernando Santos’s men thrashed Luxembourg at Estádio Algarve.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored two penalties within five minutes in the first half before completing the treble in the second half after Bruno Fernandes and Joao Palhinha had also scored for Portugal.

Former Governor of Oyo State, Chief Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala has warned members of the party against going on radio or television to discredit the image of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Alao-Akala, who is the Chairman of the Elders Advisory Council of APC in the State, made this disclosure on Tuesday.
Alao-Akala ruled Oyo State between 2007 and 2011 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The former Governor, who has since 2019 joined APC warned members not to work against the party in the State.

Alao-Akala while addressing some members of the party who came to visit him at his Ibadan residence, declared that the era of impunity and disrespect for party supremacy in the Oyo State had gone.
He maintained that he would not tolerate a situation where members of the party would be going on radio, granting newspaper interviews or going on social media to tarnish the image of the party.
He warned that anyone caught would be sanctioned.
He maintained that the forthcoming APC State congress would be peaceful.
“Anybody that calls him or herself a politician can never be a recognised politician without first belonging to a political party.
“The political party will serve as your Identity. It is on the platform of that political party that you will ply your political trade.
“You can never use your surname to contest and win an election, so why can’t we abide by the rules guiding the party.
“Treating that platform that gave you a political leverage with disdain and disrespect will no longer be tolerated.
“The era of members of the party going on radio, granting newspaper interviews or going on social media to tarnish the hard earned image of the party has come to an end.
“Anybody caught in this web of impunity will be sanctioned appropriately as prescribed by the constitution of the party.
“There are rules of engagement and it will henceforth be followed to the latter. This coming state congress, you members of the party will decide who you want as your leaders.
“Anybody clamouring for the party structure is wasting his or her time. The party has returned to the people who are the members of the party. The people own the party not any leader or stakeholder. Without you followers, we cannot exist as the leaders you call us,” he declared.

Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has disclosed how to negotiate with the agitator.
Ejimakor said Kanu should be released before government can commence negotiation.
He pointed out that Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Gandhi of India and Martin Luther King of the United States, US, were released before the government of their countries negotiated with them.
In a tweet, the lawyer said it’s unnatural to negotiate with Kanu while detained.

“When a man is in detention and you wish to negotiate with him, the first step you take is to stop resisting every effort being made to release him from detention.
“That’s how they negotiated with Mandela, Gandhi & Martin Luther King. It’s unnatural to negotiate with a man in chains,” Ejimakor tweeted.
Kanu is locked up by the Department of State Services, DSS.
The pro-Biafra agitator was rearrested in Kenya and repatriated to Nigeria to continue his trial for treason.
The IPOB leader is expected to appear before Justice Binta Nyako-led Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on October 21.
Meanwhile, the Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Samuel Chukwuemeka Kanu-Uche, has urged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to grant amnesty to secessionists like Sunday Igboho and Kanu.

After one hundred and eighteen (118) days in captivity, bandits in Northwest Nigeria, have released 90 abducted students and staff of Federal Government College (FGC), Birnin Yauri in Kebbi State.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the State, DSP Nafi’u Abubakar confirmed the released of the students and their teachers to newsmen but did not make further clarification.
A father of one of the abducted students, who preferred not to be mentioned, also confirmed the released of the students.
“Yes. They were released yesterday but are still with the authorities. They are expected to undergo some medical check up before they are released to parents,” he said.

Asked whether there was ransome paid before the bandits released the students, he said, “I am not going to speak on that. I hope the authorities are in the position to explain better”.

The Senate, on Tuesday, called on the Federal Government to immediately declare a state of emergency on federal roads and improve its funding.<a name='more' id="more"></a>
 
The red chamber also urged the Federal Ministry of Finance to, as a matter of urgency, release adequate funds to the Federal Road Maintenance Agency for the purpose of carrying out emergency repairs on all federal roads in the country.
 
 The resolutions were reached by the chamber following a motion sponsored by Senator Gershom Bassey, titled ‘Motion on Nigeria’s bad roads And NUPENG’s impending nationwide strike’.
 
Coming under Order 42 and 52 of the Senate Standing Orders, Bassey described the 36,000-kilometres federal road network as the largest and most valuable single public infrastructure asset owned by the Nigerian government.
 
“The deplorable state of the federal roads in Nigeria have become a national shame and an unnecessary embarrassment as scores of innocent people are kidnapped by bandits, robbed, mutilated and killed daily in avoidable accidents on account of bad federal roads,” the lawmaker said.
 
He lamented that the Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas workers had threatened to cripple the Nigerian economy by a nationwide strike if the bad and shameful roads are not rehabilitated.
 
The lawmaker recalled that in 2019, he made a similar call through a motion for increased funding for maintenance and rehabilitation of the country’s federal highways.
 
He expressed worry that despite several calls, there had not been improved funding for maintenance and rehabilitation of highways.
 
According to Bassey, the federal highways in Nigeria requires the sum of about N215bn per annum to revamp 3,500km of federal roads for eight to 10 years for total rehabilitation to be achieved.
 
He said from 2016-2020, the actual funds released to FERMA by the Federal Government for road rehabilitation and maintenance was just about 17 per cent of the required sum.
 
He added that poor funding and neglect of Nigerian roads had led to the abysmal state of federal roads in the country.
 
The Senate, in its resolutions, urged the Federal Ministry of Finance to immediately as a matter of urgent national importance release adequate funding to the FERMA to urgently carry out emergency repairs on all federal roads across the country.
 
The chamber also urged the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing to immediately introduce weight bridges on relevant portions of all federal highways to check overloading of trucks and tankers.
