I’m not a prosperity preacher - Pastor Adeboye

The General Overseer of The Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye on Friday night steered the hornets nest, when declared that he was not a prosperity preacher, arguing that very often prosperity preachers twist the word of God to fit their message.<br />

Preaching a sermon titled; Abba Father 6 during the monthly Holy Ghost Service at the three Kilo-metre by three kilometre aiditor-ium of the church, Pastor Adeboye who called for special prayers for himself, made a profound decla-ration, saying he was rather a holiness preacher.<br />
<br />
Shortly after the cacophony of voices, the man of God began his sermon by outling the different categories of pastors; saying “some are called prosperity pre-achers because they are always preaching about prosperity; some are called faith preachers because they focus on faith. “Some others are called grace preachers because they focus on grace. Very few are called holiness preachers. Which group do you think I belong?” he asked the mammoth crowd of worshippers which included the Acting President, Mr. Yemi Osinbajo, and the congregation wondering the direction of his sermon, respond-ed: “Holiness preacher.”<br />

Before his main sermon at the July edition of the Holy Ghost Service, Pastor Adeboye shocked thousands of worshippers when he declared that his topic would focus on prosperity, stressing however, he does not fall in the mould of prosperity preachers. Thanking his listeners all over the world for their response, Pastor Adeboye started with a lesson on homiletics, saying: “The reasons pastors are categorized like this is because that is the area they focus on, but atimes they go to ex-treme. Prosperity preachers preach prosperity in such a mann-er that atimes they have to twist the word of God to fit their message. Earlier on, after his previous month’s spiritual warfare led to the arrest of Nigerian billionaire kidnapper, Evans and some of his gang members, Pastor Adeboye reinvigorated his holy war against kidnappers and all persons and organisations making life difficult for common Nigerians.<br />

Nine days after Adeboye declared holy war on kidnappers and herd-smen killing innocent people across the nation, notorious kid-napper, Chukwudubem George Onwuamadike aka Evans and some of his gang members were arrested in Lagos. Visibly still angry at the continu-ed activities of kidnappers across the country, the cleric urged the mammoth crowd to pray: “Father, not just the kingpins; we pray that root out every kidnapper in every part of the country.” Continuing, he led the worsh-ippers, saying: “My Father, send down your fire on every society or cult groups shedding blood of innocent Nigerians. Send down Your fire upon every person or organisation making life difficult for the com-mon people of the nation. Father expose them and dislodge them.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted negative insinuations trailing its decision to suspend the recall process of Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West, in compliance with a court order.<br />
<br />
Okechukwu Ibeanu, a national commissioner and acting Chairman of INEC said in a statement on Saturday in Abuja that the attention of the commission had been drawn to some media reports about its decision to obey the court order.<br />
<br />
Mr. Ibeanu, a professor, said some of the reports were claiming that INEC was being blackmailed into abandoning the process as a result of the decision of the Senate to probe the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TEFUND).<br />
<br />
He said relating INEC’s decision to the Senate’s intention to probe TETFUND, where the present INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, previously served as executive secretary, was false and misleading.<br />
<br />
He also described it as deliberate attempt to portray the commission in a bad light and cast aspersions on it.<br />
“The commission wishes to state unequivocally and categorically that these reports are totally incorrect and mischievous,” he said.<br />
Mr. Ibeanu said while the commission formally acknowledged the receipt of the petition submitted to it by some registered voters from Kogi West, it also notified Mr. Melaye about the development in writing.<br />
He added that in line with the powers conferred on it by the Constitution and the Electoral Act, the Commission on July 3, formally announced the timetable and schedule of activities for the recall of the Senator.<br />

He stated that the commission, in line with its issued timetable for the recall, pasted the Notice of Verification at the Kogi West Constituency (INEC Office in Lokoja) on July 10.<br />
“However, on the same July 10, INEC received an order given by the Federal High Court, Abuja, and dated July 6.’’<br />
He said that the order in respect to suit filed by Melaye, directed the “parties to maintain the status quo till the determination of the plaintiff’s motion on notice.’’<br />
Mr. Ibeanu added that the Judge, in granting the relief sought by the Senator, also fixed Sept. 29 as the date to hear the Motion on Notice.<br />
He said that by this date, the 90-day timeframe established by the Constitution for the entire recall process to be completed, would have lapsed.<br />
He said deeply concerned by this situation, INEC considered the court order and its implication for the Commission’s ability to carry out its constitutional function regarding the petition to recall the Senator.<br />
He stated that after weighing all the options, the commission, as a responsible organization, decided that it should not be seen to be disobeying a court order, “however inappropriate it may consider the order.<br />
“However, in this particular case, the commission also decided to take immediate steps to vacate the court order and for the matter to be heard and determined expeditiously.<br />
This, he said, was to ensure that the case was determined within a limit of 90 days from the date of the presentation of the petition that the exercise must be completed.<br />
Mr. Ibeanu added that INEC also decided to call the attention of the chief justice of Nigeria to the order, in view of its effect on the performance of the its constitutional duty to conduct the referendum for the recall.<br />
“Besides, the Commission considered it important to draw the Chief Justice’s attention to the matter for immediate judicial intervention.’’<br />
<br />
<br />
This, according to him, is to avoid situation where, if a similar cases arises in the future, the Commission’s work will be imperiled, as any individual could rush to court to stop what is clearly a constitutional process.<br />
“In fact, contrary to the impression given by the misleading reports, the INEC Chairman, Yakubu, was not even at the meeting where the Commission took the decision to obey the court order.<br />
“Yakubu is currently leading a team of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) on an official fact-finding mission to some West African countries, in his capacity as the body’s President,” he explained.<br />
He assured Nigerians that INEC would continue to diligently carry out its constitutional functions without fear, favour, affection or ill will.<br />

Recently, I had a conversation with Mohammed Ali Ndume, the Senator representing Borno South senatorial zone and who was recently suspended by the Senate. Because of Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume’s notorious history, I must confess that my mind was a bit biased against him and so when on Sunday the 8th of July 2017, he complained that Boko Haram had upped the ante of their attacks, I was a bit irritated by him because he was one of the many All Progressive Congress politicians who had praised President Muhammadu Buhari for ‘defeating’ Boko Haram. I was outraged enough to release the following statement on facebook:<br />

In today’s paper, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume who once praised President Muhammadu Buhari for ‘defeating’ Boko Haram now says he is worried about the ‘worrisome’ dimensions of Boko Haram attacks! In fact, Ndume says he is ‘disturbed’! I am also disturbed too. My disturbance is based on this: How can people who have been ‘defeated’ now increase the tempo of their attacks to ‘worrisome’ and ‘disturbing’ levels Senator? You see sir, lies have an expiry date and the lies you told against Goodluck Jonathan will continue to ‘worry’ and ‘disturb’ you! Even though I tagged Senator Ndume in the post, I never expected that he would respond, but respond he did as follows: I really thought of not responding to your comments but the fact the you remain one of the few beneficiaries of GEJ admin that still stand by him. He was an innocent weak President that most of the people around him exploited for their personal interest. Even though the response above is not completely positive, it was however not the type of response I would have expected from Ndume.<br />
<br />
I have had a number of exchanges with many an APC politician and all too often these exchanges have been filled with vitriol coming from them and so this was a ‘breath of fresh air’ (if I may be excused that play on words). And so I responded to him as follows: Mohammed Ali Ndume What you said about Goodluck Jonathan may or may not be true, but what I said about you IS true. You praised Muhammadu Buhari for defeating Boko Haram. I can give you the date when you said it. And in today’s papers you are lamenting about Boko Haram attacks.<br />
<br />
So Senator, let us stick with these facts. If I have lied, please feel free to expose me. To which the suspended Senator in turn responded as follows: What you said my brother Reno is true. I praised and still praise PMB for defeating BH and my concern for the recent development is not out of place. GEJ misused the opportunity given to Nigerian minorities which I am one. This is a fact that nobody can deny. I was so disarmed by the Senator’s conviviality (to me, if not to former President Jonathan) even though I disagreed with his conclusions on my former boss that I went on to say the following: Mohammed Ali Ndume I praise you for telling the truth. I respect you for that and there is no need for us to go at each other.<br />
<br />
Obviously, Boko Haram was not defeated when President Muhammadu Buhari said it was. We pray that the deaths of your innocent constituents will end soon. Forgive me if I have wronged you. To which Senator Ndume responded thus: Reno Omokri, I respect you for standing by GEJ. So many beneficiaries have since abandoned him. I urge you to continue doing that. Because that is a rare quality of a good man. May Allah bring peace, equity, unity and good governance to our beloved country.<br />
<br />
At this point, all I could respond with was an ‘Amin’ (amen in Arabic)! I must say that my interaction with Senator Ndume so touched me and It made me go from dealing with him from a position of cynicism to developing almost a soft spot for him. Why a soft spot? Because most Nigerian politicians are not humble enough to admit when and where they are wrong and for the Senator to do that shows a level of maturity that I find endearing. I daresay that others may also find it endearing as I did.<br />
<br />
There are many uses for politics, but to my mind, the very best use of the vocation is to turn ones enemies into ones friends and whatever may be said about Senator Ndume, he does have that ability. Now that we have identified one person who had this quality in the APC, I must appeal to him to teach it to President Muhammadu Buhari because the greatest threat to the continued existence of Nigeria as one united indivisible country is not Nnamdi Kanu and his IPOB, rather it is the 97% versus 5% mentality of the President.<br />
<br />
Not only does that mentality prove that our President could never have passed mathematics (that is even if he truly has the certificate that we have only heard about but not seen), it only shows that the President is a ruler and not a leader. Let me explain the difference between a ruler and a leader. A ruler is a person in authority because of an office he/she holds and who maintains himself in that office by catering to the needs of his/her loyalists. A leader on the other hand is a person in authority because of his or her or character traits which others find attractive and thus follow him as a result and who continues to expand his or her influence and authority by catering to the needs of everyone in his or her team or sphere of influence.<br />
<br />
President Buhari fits into the former which is why he would use a sectional language to address a national holiday. It is also the reason why he was not able to bring himself to pay a state visit to those states where he lost in the 2015 elections. Ask yourself which state President Muhammadu Buhari has visited in the Southeast and South south since he assumed office as President on May 29, 2015. The answer is nought, nil, nada, nothing, zero, zilch and zip.<br />
<br />
The same President Muhammadu Buhari who has visited multiple foreign countries has not found it within himself to even visit these opposition states! In fact, those states could be forgiven if they thought they were the ‘Dogs and Baboons’ famously referenced by the President in 2012 because since Buhari rose to power, they have been soaked in blood by Fulani herdsmen with little or nothing done for them by the same President who once complained that the fight against Boko Haram was anti North (his words not mine). The husband talks of Dog and Baboon, the wife talks of Hyenas and Jackals. Are we sure these people still see Nigerians as human beings? I have been praying for the President Muhammadu Buhari.<br />
<br />
I have asked nothing from him, neither do I need anything from the First Family. What I do want from them is to address us as human beings not as sundry wild animals that rank low on the food chain! Nigeria is facing unprecedented floods with no solution, secession threats, quit notices, hyperinflation, Naira losing value and at this critical time the First Family chooses to reference us with Animal innuendo! How did we go from ‘my ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian’ to being called Dogs, Baboons, Hyenas and Jackals? How did this happen? It is now I believe that Fela Kuti was a prophet of sorts (God can speak through anybody).<br />
<br />
Twenty eight years ago he warned us by singing ‘Many leaders as you see them, na different disguise them dey o, animal in human skin!’ And what a damp squib acting President Yemi Osinbajo’s visit to London to see his boss turned out to be. We were expecting some direction from that visit, some inkling of a solution to the many pressing domestic problems that this administration has inflicted on us, but the long suffering and well meaning acting President could only mouth at the usual platitudes to us about the president ‘recovering fast’ and is expected to to ‘return soon’! Can you blame the good man?<br />
<br />
Hedged in as he is by the ‘cabal’ and their lap dogs who have been flying a kite that ‘the next in line is not always the next king’! Meaningless platitudes! If the President is indeed ‘recovering fast’ how come the acting President could not pose for pictures with his boss for the benefit of Nigerians? And how come the Presidency’s outlets released old pictures of the First Lady and Kayode Fayemi in winter wears with the President to try and fool the Nigerian public?<br />
<br />
I just came back from a two week working visit to London and Aberdeen and the weather in the U.K. does not support the type of outfits we saw in those pictures! I pray for President Muhammadu Buhari, but do you know how many poor and sick Nigerians can be treated with the thousands of pounds it cost to keep his Presidential jet at London Stansted Airport in the U.K. daily? Today, hundreds of poor Nigerians will starve to death.<br />
<br />
They could have been rescued with a fraction of that money. Today hundreds of women will die in child birth.<br />
<br />
They could have gone to a clinic and their lives saved with a fraction of that money. Today, hundreds of infants will die of malnutrition. Only a percentage of that money could have saved them.<br />
<br />
My question to you is who is praying for them? So in conclusion, my advice to the President is the same advice that former President Olusegun Obasanjo gave to the nation on Wednesday January 20, 2010.<br />
<br />
On that day, former President Obasanjo said: “If you take up an appointment, or a job, elected, appointed or whatever and then your health starts failing you, and you will not be able to satisfy yourself and the people you are supposed to serve, then, there is a part of honour and a part of morality and if you don’t do that, I do not need to say more than that.”<br />
<br />
What more can I add to that than to say who the cap fits, let him wear it! And let me end by saying that it is so disappointing that Tony Blair would agree to go to a Kaduna state where at least 347 Shiite men, women, children and infants were slaughtered without anyone being held liable! I know Tony Blair professes to be a Christian. How Christian is it to affirm a government in whose sphere this mass murder happened? This is not counting the killings that were ongoing in Southern Kaduna earlier this year.<br />
<br />
I assume The Tony Blair Faith Foundation would have been paid for this visit to Kaduna state, but money is not everything. Mr. Tony Blair should remember what our Lord said in Mark 8:36 “what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”<br />
<br />
Apparently, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume has another pupil in Mr. Blair. Reno’s Nuggets You eat three times a day in order to be physically healthy. Won’t it make sense to also have three streams of income so you can be financially healthy? And if men who did not graduate university founded Apple, Microsoft and Facebook, you have no excuse for failure as a graduate.<br />
<br />
Finally, if you’re lazy and like to sleep a lot, then make sure you have a business that still makes you money even when you are sleeping.<br />

Indigenes of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, have called on the Federal Government to accord state status to the territory so they can elect a governor.<br />

The indigenes under the aegis of Original Inhabitants Development Association of Abuja (OIDA), said that the situation where a minister in appointed to just develop teh center was not favourable.<br />
<br />
Pastor Danladi Jeji, President of OIDA, made the call on Saturday in Abuja, during a town hall meeting by FCT natives on the future of Abuja indigenes.<br />
<br />
Jeji said that for over 41 years, several resettlement and relocation experiments were carried out in the FCT by various governments, but “no headway due to policy inconsistencies.’’<br />
<br />
He said that if the natives were allowed to elect their governor, members of house of assembly, and more local area councils created, there would be more accountability and development.<br />
<br />
“The failure of the Federal Government to resettle, relocate and compensate our people at the initial cost of N2.8 billion in 1978 has led to several policies summersaults.<br />
<br />
“In spite of all the challenges, we are still here, and we are not prepared to go anywhere, because we have nowhere to go.<br />
<br />
“All we want is to also be represented in the Federal Executive Council,’’ Jeji said, adding, “ the natives no longer want a city-centred minister that focuses on developing elite districts.’’<br />
He stressed that the constitution should be amended to reflect cosmopolitan nature of Abuja.<br />
<br />
Jeji said: “This is our own idea of restructuring, a restructuring based on devolution of governmental powers from federal authorities to Abuja city authorities.<br />

The Plateau Police Command said it had apprehended a 25-year-old man for allegedly posing as ‘female sex worker’ in Jos.<br />

The command’s spokesman, ASP Terna Tyopev, said on Saturday in Jos that the suspect, identified as Micheal Atseng, was arrested on July 13 at Gwom Guest House, Hwolshe, at about 9:30 pm.<br />

“The hotel management alerted us that someone is lodging in their hotel who poses as a woman but with physical features of a man.<br />
<br />
“We mobilised our men and at exactly 9:30 pm, he was accosted and had been in our custody, ” Tyopev said.<br />
<br />
Tyopev, who described the suspect as a “habitual homosexual’ said in 2016, he was arrested by soldiers but returned to his normal business after he was released.<br />
<br />
He said the suspect, who usually disguised as a female prostitute, had lured many men in need of sexual satisfaction to take him in.<br />
<br />
The spokesman described the suspect’s activities as ‘criminal’, adding that he was being thoroughly investigated.<br />
<br />
“In the first instance, posing as someone you are not to deceive the public is criminal because only God knows how many men must have fallen victims of this act.<br />
<br />
“Also, the law prohibiting homosexuality is still in force in Nigeria and anyone caught must be made to face full wrath of the law.<br />
<br />
“We have had a lot of armed robbery cases where people are robbed at gun point, and people with such character also have the tendency to commit such crime.<br />
<br />
“So, investigations are ongoing to unravel the real motive behind this act, to see if he is involved in other criminal activities, and to also forestall this bad trend in Plateau, ” he said.<br />
<br />
Tyopev called on those who patronised commercial sex workers, to be extra careful<br />
<br />
He urged the public to report to the police, the presence of such persons in their vicinity to help curb criminality in the state.<br />

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe returned home on Saturday after medical treatment in Singapore, the state broadcaster said, putting to rest speculation over the 93-year-old’s whereabouts.<br />

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation said Mugabe, who left for Singapore last Saturday, “had eye surgery in the Asian country a few years ago” and had returned for a “routine medical check-up”.<br />

Mugabe, in power since Zimbabwe’s independence from British colonial rule in 1980, is his party’s presidential candidate for next year’s elections despite concerns over his age and fitness to rule.<br />
<br />
ZBC later reported that Mugabe’s wife Grace was injured in an “freak car accident” involving her motorcade at Harare airport as she returned with the president.<br />
<br />
“(She) suffered some soft tissue bruising on the right ankle as a result,” ZBC said, adding that she did not suffer any major injury and was discharged from hospital shortly after the incident. It is unclear exactly how Grace’s ankle was injured.<br />
<br />
This week’s trip there is Mugabe’s third there this year.<br />
<br />
Public hospitals in Zimbabwe often suffer from chronic shortages of drugs and staff as the economy has struggled to rebound following years of mismanagement.<br />
<br />
Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party was forced to postpone a rally on Friday at which he was due to address supporters, triggering speculation about his whereabouts.<br />
<br />
Early in 2015, he tripped and fell as he left a podium after addressing supporters who had gathered at Harare airport to welcome him back from a foreign trip.<br />
<br />
The same year he also read a speech to parliament apparently unaware that he had delivered the same speech before.<br />
<br />
Mugabe’s party is sharply divided over his succession. Vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa and Mugabe’s wife Grace are seen as likely contenders to take over in the event of his death or retirement.<br />

Opposition parties have formed a coalition to fight Mugabe’s party in next year’s vote.

The telecommunications industry regulator made the disclosure in its Monthly Internet Subscribers Data obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.<br />
<br />
The data indicates that internet users on both Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks increased from 90,154,737 in April to 91,565,319 in May.<br />
<br />
It said that out of the 91,595,319 internet users in May, 91,565,010 were on GSM networks, while 30,309 users were on CDMA networks.<br />
<br />
Also, the GSM service providers gained 1,440,582 internet customers after recording 91,565,010 users in May, as against 90,124,428 it recorded in April.<br />
<br />
The CDMA operators had retained 30,309 internet subscribers in May as recorded in April.<br />
<br />
The data also shows that MTN had 31,406,441 subscribers browsing the internet on its network in the month under review and also recorded an increase of 600,464 internet subscribers in May after recording 30,805,977 in April.<br />
<br />
According to the NCC, Globacom has 27,402,484 customers surfing the net on its network in May, revealing an increase of 211,713 users from the 27,190,771 that surfed the internet on the network in April.<br />
<br />
Airtel had 19,912,661 internet users in May, showing an increase of 504,811 customers from 19,407,850 recorded in April.<br />
<br />
The data also showed that Etisalat had 12,843,424 customers who browsed the internet in May, an increase of 123,594 users from the 12,719,830 users recorded in April.<br />
<br />
CDMA operators, Multi-Links and Visafone had a total of 30,309 internet users on their networks in May, maintaining the same record of April.<br />
<br />
Visafone has 30,305 customers surfing the internet in May, while Multi-Links has only four internet users.<br />
<br />
The increase in the use of the internet in May is in anticipation of the country’s broadband target of 30 per cent penetration by 2018.

Court documents filed by the US Department of Justice in Houston have revealed that Nigeria’s former oil minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke tried to warn Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore, her business partners against lavish spending, including splashing millions of dollars on a yacht.<br />

“If you want to hire a yacht, you lease it for two weeks or whatever. You don’t go and sink funds into it at this time when Nigerian oil and gas sector is under all kinds of watch,” she said to Aluko in a recorded conversation.<br />
<br />
But her warning was not heeded as Aluko went on to buy Galactica Star, a luxury yacht, for $80m.<br />
<br />
The yacht, a stupendous luxury on water, was once rented by Jay Z and his wife, Beyonce for close to a million dollars during a holiday last year. It also once hosted Beyonce’s 32nd birthday in 2013.<br />
<br />
Both Aluko and Omokore are alleged to have paid bribes between 2011 and 2015 to Diezani who ensured that shell companies owned by the businessmen received billion-dollar contracts to sell Nigeria’s crude oil.<br />
<br />
The oil swap contracts were a controversial barter arrangement which saw Nigeria use middlemen to sell crude oil in exchange for refined products. With local refineries under-performing, oil swap deals were used to shore up local demand for petroleum products.<br />
<br />
Between 2010 and 2014, under Diezani’s watch, Nigeria was estimated to have channelled over 352 million barrels of oil worth a total of $35bn into oil swap deals.<br />
<br />
But with the contracts mostly opaque, Nigeria reportedly lost more than $900m in crude oil swap deals between 2009 and 2012.<br />
<br />
The deals came under severe scrutiny with former Central Bank Governor now Emir Muhammadu Sanusi describing them “not properly structured, monitored and audited.”<br />
<br />
President Buhari cancelled the oil swap arrangement in November 2015, seven months after taking office.<br />
<br />
The US Justice Department lawsuit has provided more insight into the scale of theft of Nigeria’s oil riches under Diezani Alison-Madueke’s watch.<br />
<br />
The civil lawsuit, brought by DOJ’s Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, is seeking to recover $144m in assets, including a $50m luxury condo apartment in New York and the $80m yacht.<br />
<br />
Prosecutors say both assets were proceeds from bribes paid by two Nigerian businessmen for lucrative Nigerian oil contracts. The lawsuit seeks the forfeiture of both assets.<br />
<br />
Prosecutors claim that the businessmen, Kolawole Aluko and Olajide Omokore, laundered money through the US by purchasing lavish assets.<br />
<br />
The $50m New York condo is at One57, located opposite Carnegie Hall in midtown Manhattan. The building currently holds the record for the most-expensive residential sale in New York following a $100.5m apartment purchase in 2014.<br />
<br />
Aluko’s $50m condo is the 8th most expensive in the building, but following a loan default, his mortgage lenders are set to auction the apartment on July 19.<br />
<br />
Aluko is also said to have purchased Galactica Star, a $80m 65-meter yacht which hosted Beyonce’s 32nd birthday bash in 2013.<br />
<br />
Aluko’s yacht and penthouse are not the only items under scrutiny by the DOJ.<br />
<br />
The government also alleges that Aluko, Omokore and others funded a lavish lifestyle for Alison-Madueke.<br />
<br />
According to the allegations, they conspired to purchase millions of dollars in real estate in and around London for Alison-Madueke and her family members, then renovated and furnished these homes with millions of dollars in furniture, artwork and other luxury items purchased at two Houston-area furniture stores at Alison-Madueke’s direction.<br />
<br />
According to Financial Times, the two are accused of buying a total of four residential properties in and around London worth $11.45m, and furnishing them with furniture, artwork and other luxury items.<br />
<br />
“In one day in May 2012, Mr. Aluko was said to have wired $461,500 and $262,091 to two furniture stores in Houston from a Swiss bank account, on behalf of Mrs. Alison-Madueke, the civic complaint filed in the court claimed.<br />
<br />
In return, the government alleges Alison-Madueke used her influence to direct a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to award Strategic Alliance Agreements (SAAs) to two shell companies created by Aluko and Omokore: Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Ltd. and Atlantic Energy Brass Development Ltd. (the Atlantic Companies).<br />
<br />
Under the SAAs, the Atlantic Companies were required to finance the exploration and production operations of eight on-shore oil and gas blocks. In return for financing these operations, the companies expected to receive a portion of the oil and gas produced.<br />
<br />
However, according to the complaint, the Atlantic Companies provided only a fraction of the agreed upon financing or, in some instances, failed entirely to provide it.<br />
<br />
The companies also failed to meet other obligations under the SAAs, including the payment of $120m entry fee.<br />
<br />
Nevertheless, according to the allegations, the companies were permitted to lift and sell more than $1.5bn worth of Nigerian crude oil.<br />
<br />
The government contends the Atlantic Companies then used a series of shell companies and intermediaries to launder a portion of the total proceeds of these arrangements into and through the U.S.<br />

Arsene Wenger denied reports Sanchez has agreed a new contract when he spoke to the media on Saturday after Arsenal's pre-season win over Western Sydney Wanderers.<br />

But the Frenchman is "positive" about talks with Sanchez, who is on holiday after featuring in Chile's run to the final of the Confederations Cup, where they were narrowly beaten by world champions Germany.<br />

And prior to the game against Western Sydney Wanderers, Wenger confirmed that he had been in regular contact with Alexis regarding his future.<br />

Venus Williams vowed to make amends for her Wimbledon final heartache by ending a bittersweet year on a high at the US Open.<br />

Williams failed in her bid to become the oldest Grand Slam champion in the Open era as the American star was crushed 7-5, 6-0 by Garbine Muguruza in Saturday’s title match.<br />

<a name='more' id="more"></a>YYC while reacting to yesterday’s statement credited to a Northern group led by one Gujungu that Yoruba leaders are using Chief Fani-Kayode and Governor Fayose to destablize President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, said the Northerners are being economical with the true state on Mr. Buhari’s health.<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The group in a statement on Saturday afternoon by its National President, Comrade Eric Oluwole and National Publicity Secretary Comrade Dare Oladeinde declared that Northerners are aware of the true situation of President Buhari’s health whom they alleged are searching for his replacement.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">YYC while warning the group and their cohorts to stop such attacks on Yoruba leaders maintained that Yoruba people including Fani-Kayode and Fayose are men of realities.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">It said it considered the statement as, “an act of political bewilderment that is currently facing the Northern leaders and their appurtenances over the health condition of President Muhammadu Buhari whom they are currently searching for his replacement”.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Adewole had last week slammed a three-month suspension on Yusuf to pave way for an independent probe of the ‘mountains’ of petitions against him.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">However, the NHIS boss fired back at the Minister in a daring tone, pointedly telling him to his face that he could not proceed on the suspension as the minister lacks the power to sanction him.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Yusuf maintained that it was only the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who appointed him, that could remove him from office, which has tenure of five years in the first instance and another five, if renewed.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The embattled NHIS boss further advanced five reasons why Adewole could not suspend him and why he would not leave his office to anyone else.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Yusuf said in a July 12 letter written to Adewole, “By virtue of the NHIS Act particularly section 4 and 8 thereof, my appointment and removal from office whether by way of suspension or otherwise is at the instance of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">“Except removed from office by the president under circumstances specified in the NHIS Act, my appointment is for a period of five years subject to further term of the same period at the discretion of the president.<br />
“Although by virtue of section 47 of the NHIS Act, you are empowered to give directives of a general nature to the Governing Council of the Scheme and in the absence of the Council, you have Presidential mandate to exercise the powers and functions of the council, but since the powers and functions of the Council do not include discipline, suspension or removal of the Executive Secretary of the Scheme from office, the directive in your letter under reference cannot find comfort under the said section or presidential mandate; and</blockquote>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">The letter of suspension is not in accordance with Public Service Rules as no prima facie case has been established against me in respect of the petition referred to in the letter. The mere fact that there are pending petitions against a public officer which is yet to be substantiated does not constitute a ground for suspension under the Public Service Rules. Otherwise, with over 18,000 petitions pending against public office holders before the EFCC and ICPC as at the end of June 2017, the total number of public officers who would have been on suspension by now including Honourable Ministers is left to be imagined.<br />
“As you are aware, the petitions referred to in your letter are currently being investigated by the ICPC which is yet to submit its report. In view of the criminal nature of most of the allegations in the petitions, security/investigative agencies like ICPC are the appropriate agencies for investigation contemplated in your letter; not a Ministerial Committee. I have cooperated fully with the investigations so far and will continue to do so.”</blockquote>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Copies of the letter were sent to the Acting President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Katsina Governor, Attorney General of the Federation, Director of DSS, Head of Service of the Federation, the Chairman of the EFCC and the Chairman of the ICPC.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">But in a swift reaction to Yusuf’s response, Adewole in a press statement on Friday said he dissociates himself and the ministry from Yusuf’s letter.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">According to the statement signed by the health ministry’s spokesperson, Boade Akinola, Yusuf, being a public officer, is bound by the regulations governing the Public Service.</div>

<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">“The NHIS is an agency supervised by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Administrative Panel of Inquiry raised by the Ministry to investigate activities of the agency has commenced its assignment with specific terms of reference,” the spokesperson said.</blockquote>

Back pain is all too common. The National Institute of Health reports that 8 out of 10 of us will experience moderate to severe back pain at least once in our lives. Most people will experience several days of back pain, multiple times in their lives.<br />

Your risk for this is high if you have an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, if you work at a desk, sit on a couch for hours in a day or if you don’t have a regular fitness routine.<br />
<br />
However, the good news is that there are some safe, easy movement exercises that I would offer as a way to prevent back pain. These same motions that prevent back pain also reverse back pain and are safe for almost any previous low back condition.<br />
<br />
The one safety rule is: Do all motions up to, but not past, the point of pain. A stretching feeling is good. Sharp pain or radiation (to another area) of pain or numbness says to stop.<br />
<br />
Researchers found that people who exercised at least two or three times a week slashed their odds of having a lower back pain episode by 35%. When added to education about preventing back pain (such as learning the proper way to lift, better ergonomics, improved posture), exercise cut risk by 45%.<br />
<br />
If you have either local pain (that stays in the joints of the back) or radiating pain or numbness, now would be a good time to find a good Chiropractor and get back on track. With these exercises, performed on a regular basis, you probably won’t have a reason to use pain pills for low back pain and can prevent injury or re-injury.<br />
<br />
Below are five exercises that can be included into your daily routine to strengthen your core muscles. These motions will keep your back strong and safe. This will prevent back pain when performed regularly.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>1 – Bird Dog</b>: This move is great for working your core because it activates all the major muscle groups that flex, extend, and laterally bend both your abdominal and back muscles.<br />
<br />
First come into a tabletop position on your hands and knees. Hands are placed directly underneath your shoulders. Knees are directly underneath your hips.<br />
<br />
Make a flat or neutral spine so you’re not pressing up or sinking down; stay right in the middle.<br />
<br />
Reach your right hand forward parallel with the floor while extending your left leg back, also parallel with the floor in the opposite direction (“Bird Dog” position).<br />
<br />
Now, really reach toward opposite sides of the room with the extended limbs, then come back through neutral position and switch sides. Repeat 4 times on each side, holding for 10 seconds, alternating sides.<br />
<br />
<b>2 – Forearm Plank Reach:</b> This is a moving forearm plank that forces you to activate your core as you move to alternating positions.<br />
<br />
First come onto your elbows in plank position and maintain a nice, solid core. To do this, tighten your abs and squeeze your buttocks together like you are holding a $100 bill between your b*tt cheeks. Widen your feet to become very stable. From here, reach one hand forward, and then alternate. Prevent your hips from moving by tightening your core muscles. This is your goal: to keep your hips nice and still, and parallel to the ground. Repeat 4 times on each side, holding each arm in the extended position for 10 seconds each, alternating sides.<br />
<br />
<b>3 – Safe Side Stretch:</b> This move is great because it opens up both your hips and your back. Often times, back pain can be the result of tightness in other areas of your body such as your upper back or your hips. You want to allow for a stretch in any muscles that are tight or that might be compensating for opposing weak muscles. Stretching holds equal value to strengthening.<br />
<br />
Start by going into a plank. Bring your hands underneath your shoulders. Next, bring your right foot up to meet your right hand – just to the outside of it. , and then you’re going to twist open with your right hand, reaching for the sky. Then make sure that left leg stays straight by squeezing your left buttock muscles (gluteals).<br />
<br />
Now switch sides. Replace your right foot back into plank position. Bring your left foot up right next to your left hand. Open 180 degrees again, reaching for the sky. Remember to tighten the straight leg gluteal muscles. Hold for 10 seconds each. Repeat 4 times on each side, alternating.<br />
<b><br /></b><b>4 – Mid-Spine Twist:</b> This move is a twist designed to open up your T-spine (thoracic or upper back). So to prevent back pain in this area while performing this motion, you want to create stability in your lower spine and mobility in your mid-back.<br />
<br />
First lie down on your side with both arms straight out to your side, one on top of the other. Knees bent to 90 degrees, one on top of the other, keeping a straight or neutral spine. Stack your shoulders and your hands on top of each other. Begin by opening your top arm until the back of it touches the floor on the opposite side. Your arms are now 180 degrees from each other. Your knees are still together on the original side.<br />
<br />
Now repeat on the opposite side. Hold for 10 seconds each. Repeat 4 times each side, alternating.<br />
<br />
<b>5 – Low Back Hold Leg Lift:</b> Lie down on your back, with a towel rolled up and placed across the lowest portion of your back, just above your hips.<br />
<br />
Keep your neck in neutral position with your head on the ground. Engage your core as you lift both legs up 6 inches. Now keep your left leg at a height of 6 inches while the right leg raises straight up as high as you can go. Hold for 3 seconds. Put the right leg back to 6 inches as the left leg goes up as high as it can go. Repeat 10 times, alternating legs.<br />
<br />
The towel is there for you to press into to keep a neutral spine, protecting the low back and to make sure that you are activating your lower core.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Odude, said while parading the suspect and others at the state police headquarters in Ibadan on Friday that Ogun conspired with three other persons, including her cousin, to arrange the crime.</div>

<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">“The Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command arrested a business woman who conspired with a three-man gang to orchestrate her own kidnap in order to fraudulently obtain money from her husband, Kayode Ogun, who lives with her in Ibadan.<br />
“The incident happened on July 4, 2017 at around 7.45pm when three armed hoodlums stormed the residence of the supposed victim and kidnapped her. Barely four hours later, the suspects contacted the husband and demanded a N10m for her release.<br />
“The husband, who did not know that it was all arranged by his wife, contacted the police and a manhunt was launched for the hoodlums. Two male suspects were later arrested.”</blockquote>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The suspects arrested are Kayode Adepoju and Olalekan Anafi. Ogun said that her husband, who has dual citizenship of Nigeria and the US, worked for the stock exchange and that the whole thing started like a joke. She added that she lodged herself in a hotel at Imalefalafia area of Ibadan.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">“I just woke up one day and thought of a way to make my husband see reason why he should use his American citizen status to take me out of the country. It all started like a child’s play. I told my supposed abductors to tell my husband that the ransom was N10m although I knew he would not be able to pay such money. He is just a salary earner. I lodged myself in a hotel and I was there for two days. I went back home on the third day and no ransom was paid.”</blockquote>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">She added that findings from these statistics would be computed, and compared with how much tax the person/company is paying to know if the right taxes are being paid or not.</div>

“You can register a high-end car. It tells me something about your income. So we look at your tax returns. If you registered Mercedes E-Class and you are paying N100,000 tax, then something is wrong. Those are red flags. We now have the capacity to assess people accurately.<br />
<br />
No one would be left out in the campaign to enlarge the tax net as the response being received so far showed that people are embracing the tax policy.<br />
Some beggars are earning millions, and the government would even look at their lifestyles and tax them because even proceeds from begging are taxable. You are supposed to pay taxes even if your means of income is begging.<br />
We are trying to build an economy where we have oil and other things. It is going to be oil plus and wider economy. Tax is a matter of law and Nigerians should continue to pay.<br />
The resources will be used judiciously because when people pay taxes, they get involved. When people do not pay taxes, when you call for budget meetings, they will not come.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">But when they pay their taxes, if the government says these are the projects we want to execute on the budget, people will show up because they have contributed to the tax revenues," she said.</div>

Arsenal completed their Australian tour with a 3-1 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers with all their goals coming in the first half in Sydney on Saturday.<br />

The Gunners scored their goals in an 11-minute period late in the first half through Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey and Mohamed Elneny.<br />

The English giants were held in the second half with the 2014 Asian Champion League winners pulling a goal back off an indirect free kick from Steven Lustica.<br />

Arsenal leave for China winning both games on their first tour to Australia in 40 years after beating A-League champions Sydney FC 2-0 on Thursday.<br />

“They made it quite physical for us, they pushed us a little bit and we played very well for long periods in the first half,” Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.<br />
<br />
“The players who came on in the second half gave us more impetus and we finished strongly, unfortunately, we couldn’t score anymore but overall it was a positive game.”<br />

The game drew 83,221 fans for a two-game total of 163,653 for Arsenal’s visit.<br />

Arsenal broke away with three goals late in the opening half after a competitive opening.<br />
<br />
French striker Giroud swept home a cross from Spaniard Nacho Monreal after an overlapping run on the left in the 33rd minute and they were two-up a few minutes later.<br />
<br />
Monreal found Ramsey with a long ball and he lobbed goalkeeper Janjetovic on the edge of the box.<br />
<br />
The Gunners grabbed a third goal nearing half-time when Egyptian Elneny’s long-range volley deflected off defender Brendan Hamill’s leg past Janjetovic into the unguarded net.<br />
<br />
Gunners’ record signing Frenchman Alexandre Lacazette showed his immense skills when he turned his marker and fired a shot at the keeper in the opening minutes.<br />
<br />
Elneny came close to a second goal when another long-range shot cannoned off the underside of the bar wth Janjetovic beaten minutes after the resumption.<br />
<br />
But the Wanderers stuck at it and Jack Clisby hit the bar with a drive and Ramsey conceded a free kick with a back pass to substitute goalkeeper Emi Martinez.<br />

Lustica hammered the indirect free kick against Monreal on the goal-line and put the rebound into the roof of the net for his team’s opener in the 57th minute.<br />

Wenger made mass changes midway through the second period with Lacazette and Giroud among those substituted.<br />

The Gunners came close to adding to their tally in the final stages with Mesut Ozil and Eddie Nketiah hitting the post and Theo Walcott having a sharp chance saved by goalkeeper Janjetovic.</div>

M-Liman who is also the state’s Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, said other projects to be inaugurated included General Hospital and Semi Urban Water Projects in Rini and Gamji communities in Bakura Local Government.<br />

Others were Government Girl Science Secondary School Talata-Mafara, Government Girl Day Secondary School, Kwatarkwashi and Danturai Government Day Secondary School Gusau and Bungudu local government areas.<br />

Also to be inaugurated was School for Handicapped in Gummi Local Government, he said.<br />
<br />
According to him, the acting President is expected to pay courtesy visit to Gusau and Gummi emirates during the visit.<br />
<br />
Acting President was earlier scheduled to inaugurate the projects during 2017 democracy day celebration but postponed till July 18.</div>

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Saturday said it would henceforth ensure the resolution of all exam issues before releasing results of its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), to avoid cancellation.<br />

JAMB’s Head of Public Relations, Mr Fabian Benjamin, said this in Bwari, FCT, while speaking on the outcome of the mop-up examination results.<br />
<br />
He disclosed that the results of supplementary examination conducted by the Board on July 1 in 170 centres for 85, 000 candidates across the country had been released.<br />
<br />
He explained that the result was delayed to ascertain there were no hitches all the centres that the supplementary exam was conducted.<br />
<br />
“The results had been ready as usual; we release results two hours after examination; this delay was because we wanted to take our time to clear all issues.<br />
<br />
“This is also to ensure that all the CCTV at centres we conducted mop-up examinations were adequately fixed; we do not want situation where we release results before thinking of cancelling it.<br />
<br />
“What we want to be doing now as we have started with this mop-up examination, and will be doing in 2018, is to ensure all issues are resolved before releasing results.<br />
<br />
“It is our view that there is no need rushing to release results; it is better to do whatever is supposed to have been done, before we release the results,” he said.<br />
<br />
He urged candidates yet to receive their supplementary examination results, not to panic, saying that no result from the mop-up examination was outstanding.<br />
<br />
He said that the breakdown of the 2017 UTME result could not be published at the moment since the Board was yet to conduct exam for foreign candidates.<br />
<br />
“We are still writing exam and it will be unfair to publish the whole results when people are still writing.<br />
<br />
“We just rolled out forms for foreign centres, so once we finish that, which is not going to take long, we will do the analysis and come to a conclusion,” Benjamin said.<br />
<br />
85, 000 candidates of the 1.7 million enrolled for the 2017 UTME had registered late for the exam as a result of some challenges.</div>

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned Nigerians to stop addressing him as Matthew or see his eyes red.<br />

He said his Christian name, Matthew, should be removed from his name and that henceforth he should be officially addressed as Olusegun Okikiola Aremu Obasanjo.<br />
<br />
The former head of state said he does not want to be called Olusegun Matthew Okikiola Aremu, according to Leadership reports.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo said he should no more be addressed by it because he is not a tax collector like his biblical namesake.<br />
<br />
Accordingly, he adopted only Olusegun Okikiola Aremu as his names, stressing that names have lots of connotations in African setting.<br />
<br />
He said anybody who does not want to see his (Obasanjo’s) eyes red should stop calling him Matthew.<br />
<br />
He stated this in Abuja on Friday, July 14 at an event organised by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) in commemoration of his 80th birthday.<br />
<br />
Obasanjo clocked 80 years in March.<br />
<br />
His words: “When I was born in my part of Nigeria, the system was that after eight days, you must be given a name, and for people to know that you were born into a Christian family, you will be given one Hebrew name.<br />
<br />
“My mother and father decided to name me Matthew but when I grew up, I started asking myself the meaning of Matthew.<br />
<br />
“Not only does it not have meaning as long as I am concerned, the biblical Matthew is a stupid tax collector. Anybody who does not want to see my eyes red should stop calling me Matthew.<br />
<br />
”He commended the NSE presidential system of election and governance, wishing that it could be introduced into Nigerian politics.<br />
<br />
Also speaking, the president of NSE, Engineer Oliver Tagbo Anyaeji noted that Obasanjo successfully initiated and pioneered the establishment of an engineering and technology university (Bells) as well as the state-of-art presidential library in Ota, Ogun state, which is considered as first of its kind in Africa.<br />
<br />
“While it will be pretty difficult to bring to the fore all the achievements of this world acclaimed achiever, I wish to mention that President Obasanjo initiated the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP)in 2005 and directed by policy that Nigerian engineering firms must get at least 25 percent of exhausted project scope,” he stated.
