Heavy flood takes over Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island

An unprecedented flood has taken over the entire Ahmadu Bello way in Victoria Island, Lagos on Saturday, forcing some residents and commercial offices to unceremoniously vacate their premises.<br />

The Lagos State Police Command has temporarily closed the road for human and vehicular movements due to threat by heavy flood.<br />
<br />
The road has been flooded due to continuous downpour experienced in the state since three days ago.<br />
<br />
The command’s spokesman, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, disclosed that the second link-road to the Island coming from Lagos mainland was unsafe for motorists.<br />
<br />
Famous-Cole said that the down pour in the state has caused flood making other roads on the Island unsafe.<br />
<br />
He said that the flood has caused traffic gridlock in parts of Victoria Island and its environs and advised motorist plying Ahmadu Bello Way and other areas prone to flood to take alternative routes approved by traffic officials.<br />
<br />
“The flood in the area has caused us to temporarily block Ahmadu Bello Way for safety of motorists.<br />
<br />
“We want the public to know that the relevant traffic and security agencies are on ground to flush out the drains and secure road users in the state,’’ Famous-Cole said.<br />
<br />
Mr Mahmud Hassan, the Public Affairs Officer, Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA), told NAN that their men have been on ground since morning ensuring that road users use alternative routes provided.<br />
<br />
He said that the flood has caused hardship to road users and people living in the area.<br />
<br />
Mr Tosin Olalere, who resides at Abraham Adesanya Estate near Victoria Island, told NAN that he has been in his house since Wednesday due to the continuous rain.<br />
<br />
“There has been no vehicular movements since Wednesday July 5, till now.<br />
<br />
“People in my community have resulted to trekking or using canoe to move about.<br />
<br />
“Some people have even started moving out of the community because of the flood which destroyed their properties,’’ Olalere said.<br />
<br />
Similarly, some soldiers, who are residing in the Bonny Cantonment, told NAN that a significant number of residents have been forced to vacate their homes.<br />
<br />
Some passengers in a commercial bus from mainland to Island in Lagos also complained of outrageous amount they paid to get to Victoria Island due to the flood on Ahmadu Bello Way.<br />
<br />
A student, who declined to give her name, said she spent over four hours in traffic from Oshodi to Ajah because of the flood.<br />
<br />
She said she and other passengers paid N1000 from Oshodi to Ajah instead of the N400 being paid on a regular day.<br />
<br />
“People were even rushing to board the bus despite the crazy increase in the fare,’’ she said.<br />
<br />
Another passenger who simply gave her name as Obianuju, said she tried to avoid paying N1000 to Ajah from Oshodi, however boarded a bus to Obalende for N250 from Oshodi only to find out that the fare from Obalende to Ajah had also skyrocketed.<br />
<br />
Obianuju said: “I paid N250 from Oshodi to Obalande in order not to pay N1000, only to get there and the drivers were charging N700 from Obalande to Ajah. It was really annoying.’’

Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has advised Nigerians to eschew violence and threats, especially to elders, warning that such won’t quell separatism.<br />

The Ex-Vice President gave the advise following the recent hate speeches and threats to some regions and especially, allegedly, to some high individuals like to the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, by some persons in the country. It is of note that in the last few months, some hate speeches have been emanating from different quarters, beginning with the quit notice issued some Nigerians of Igbo extraction by some Arewa youths who said Ndigbo must leave the northern region before October 1st or face physical attacks.<br />
<br />
Similarly, the overall leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who has been released on bail from jail has also, recently, been quoted as making a hate speech against Obasanjo after the Former President said he had no apology but has explanation to give while the recent separatist movements in the country ought to stop.<br />

According to Obasanjo, “What lesson can we learn? The lesson we can learn is that we have had enough tragedies in this country. “So far, since 1999, it seems that we have got it right. Let us hope that we continue to get it right and learn that Nigeria has had enough of bloodshed, enough of sacrifices by those victims, that Nigeria deserves peace, unity and progress.<br />
<br />
“Maimalari was a man who was very interested in the welfare of his men during a peacekeeping mission in Congo, a situation that led to him having issues with some few. He was a soldier’s soldier. “If Maimalari had lived to head the Nigerian Army, to the best of my own knowledge, Nigeria would have been better for it. “Lesson to be learnt from Maimalari’s death- this country had had trained officers who would have been of benefit to this country, but cut out at the prime of their lives, and our lesson should be that this should never happen again.<br />

“I have no apology but I have explanation. It’s because it’s necessary to stop this sort of things that took the life of your father prematurely, that we had to take the decision that all those who have tasted power, that they should never have tasted, of political office that we should ease them out of the Army so that we can have an Army that is free from political aberration.<br />
<br />
“And since 1999, I think we have got it right, let us hope that we have got it right and learn the right lessons. Nigeria has had enough bloodshed, sacrifices and Nigeria deserves peace, unity and progress. “And may be the sacrifices of the like of Brigadier General Maimalari be sufficient to give this country peace, development, unity and progress,” said Obasanjo. However, addressing his co-Biafran supporters in one of their gatherings, Mazi Kanu was quoted to have used derogatory words and even threats on the ex-President. But Atiku Abubakar, while condemning the hate and threats generally said, “It’s important for Nigerians to respect leaders who played defining roles in Nigeria’s development.<br />
<br />
Threats of violence help no one’s cause! He also said that “Violence and threats won’t quell separatism. The more Nigeria moves towards social justice, the more Nigeria shifts away from separation.” Also in one of his writeups, Atiku advised that, “The number one problem plaguing Nigeria is not corruption or even the absence of regular power.<br />
<br />
The number one problem militating against the progress of Nigeria is her lack of unity. If we can fix this problem, Nigeria will herself be fixed.”

Following the flooding of many parts of the state on Saturday after rainfall that lasted for hours, the state government has called on residents to observe extreme caution on the roads.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a name='more' id="more"></a>Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Lekki and Ajah areas were worst hit as many streets and houses were submerged in the flood.<br />
<br />
While assuring the general public of the heavy deployment of environmental sanitation officers and emergency rescue teams, especially in flood-prone areas of the State, the government urged residents to stay indoors, either at home or in their places of work, whenever there is heavy downpour, except when the need to commute becomes necessary.<br />
<br />
Warning that heavy downpour is expected for a few more weeks, the government solicits the support of citizens to desist from dumping refuse in the canals and gutters and observe safe and hygienic conducts at all times in order to reduce the effect of temporary flooding being recorded in some areas.<br />
<br />
The government also urged residents to make use of emergency numbers in case of dire situations.

Prof. Auwalu Yadudu, a lecturer, Department of Law, Bayero University, Kano has advised the National Assembly and the Presidency to resolve their lingering feud in them in the interest of peace and unity of the country.<br />

Yadudu gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Kano on Saturday, adding that the quick resolution of the crisis would also ensure harmonious working relationship between the two arms of government.<br />
<br />
He noted that the conflict between the two arms of government was not unusual in democracy, especially in presidential system.<br />
<br />
The lecturer, therefore, called on Nigerians to desist from making unnecessary comments on issues as such disagreements between the two arms of government, in order not to heat the polity.<br />
<br />
The don, however, stressed the need for the two arms to deliberate on the contentious issues and resolve them in the interest of the country.<br />
<br />
“The two arms of government should discuss the contentious issues and sort them out, if not, the Supreme Court is there to interpret the issues for them,” he said.<br />
<br />
Yadudu said the problem was caused by different opinions as to the role of the presidential system and the powers of each arm of government.<br />
<br />
On the issue of Mr Ibrahim Magu, the Acting Chairman EFCC, Yadudu advised the National Assembly to go and challenge the issue at the court of law.<br />

“I am not an APC member and I will never be. But remember the fact that our leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a courageous man in his own right, our leader in Yoruba land, forget about politics, if they give Asiwaju appointment, he will give a Yoruba man. Whether he is in the APC does not matter.<br />
“‎And I came out strongly; I defended him. I am not defending politics. I am defending the truth. Our politics must have where we would stop it and say the truth as may be necessary.”</blockquote>

Martin Elechi, a former governor of Ebonyi state, says he had to swallow his pride before defectin to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<br />

Elechi said this when he led party executive from Ebonyi to the Abuja residence of John Oyegun, national chairman of the APC.<br />
<br />
He said when he left PDP, he vowed not to join another political party.<br />
<br />
“The party (PDP) got bedevilled by impunity, corruption, lack of respect for democracy, insensitivity to public opinion,” he said.<br />
<br />
“We think that the greatest joy in a democratic system is the right of people to choose who their leaders will be. That right to decide and determine our leadership has been destroyed in Ebonyi state under the PDP. And that was why a majority of PDP members protested and left that party to look for a new democratic space.<br />
<br />
“Our people have moved to the APC. I who swore that on leaving the PDP I will never join another party but I have now swallowed my pride to say I will sink or swim with the people I had laboured with. And that is why I joined the APC.”<br />
<br />
On his part, Oyegun said under the PDP, the country’s economy was built on corruption.<br />
<br />
He said the APC would not repeat the culture of corruption and waste which was the trademark of past PDP administrations.<br />
<br />
“Under the PDP, we became an economy that was totally built on corruption. State resources were diverted into private hands and pockets, the result of which the poor people of this country are feeling today… There is serious work to be done,” he said.<br />
<br />
“At a time when oil was selling for over $120 per barrel, we neither built roads, railways nor did we maintain our airline, nor did we refine our crude to use, nothing. The institutions and commonwealth of this country was totally run aground. We spent billions of dollars on the energy sector and we got no energy. It is so painful. When you see the revelations today, you really feel that sense of anger.<br />

The Police high command has dismissed report of alleged disappearance or death of billionaire kidnapper, Chukwuduneme Onwuamadike, alias Evans, in its custody.<br />

It said contrary to the report, the kidnapper was not only firmly in its custody hale and hearty but also was very much assisting it in its ongoing investigation of alleged crimes he perpetrated while holding sway in his profession.<br />
<br />
Reacting to the report following enquiry from newsmen, Weekend, in Abuja, Force Headquarters, through its spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP, insisted that Evans never vanished from its custody nor died as being rumoured.<br />
<br />
But Moshood described those peddling the rumour as mischief makers who were only out to tarnish the hard earned image of the Nigerian Police not only in crime fighting but also prevention as well as investigation.<br />
<br />
Reminded that the story was in one of the conventional media platforms already, Mr Moshood responded: “The people are just mischievous. Evans did not vanish, Evans is still in police custody and we are making progress in the investigation.”<br />
<br />
He added: “You know we have a warrant from the court to keep him for three month and we are in the first month. Evans did not vanish.”<br />
<br />
When told that there was another information that the recently arrested kidnapper had been transferred to Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer said:”I don’t know, if you have that kind of information, why are you calling me again to say Evans vanished? ” Informed that an online platform had carried a story to that effect, Moshood said:”It is unfortunate that the online has become a comedian centre since nobody has given report that Evans has vanished.”<br />

He further clarified: “Evans did not vanish, vanish into where? Is it evaporation we call it or what? Evans is still in police custody; he is hale and healthy and he has been assisting the police further in their investigation. So, he is in police custody.”<br />
<br />
Recall that a media organization (Not Vanguard), had reported Saturday, that Evans, Nigeria’s infamous billionaire kidnapper, was no longer in the media glare unlike the past few weeks, thus fuelling speculations that he’s escaped, or dead.<br />

The Emir of Keffi, Dr. Shehu Yamusa, on Saturday warned Nigerians to desist from things that will lead to the disintegration of the country.<br />

Yamusa, who made reference to the agitation for Biafra and the quit notice to the Igbo by some northern youths, said the agitators were ignorant of the challenges of 1966-1970 civil in Nigeria.<br />

The monarch told the News Agency of Nigeria in Keffi that agitations and threats for some groups to leave the North were not necessary, adding that the ‘’country belongs to everyone.’’<br />
<br />
According to him, the northerners had always been their brother’s keepers, adding that they should live happily to improve on the commercial transactions in their domains for economic prosperity rather than quit notice.<br />
<br />
“The Ibos and Northerners fought for the Nigerian independence and having secured it, it must be enjoyed by all because we are one,” the monarch said.<br />
<br />
On the clamour for the restructuring of Nigeria, the emir said the problem would not be resolved through restructuring, adding that the leaders and the people should exercise discipline and observe the rule of law on the issue.<br />
<br />
“With discipline and commitment, Nigeria would be a better place.”<br />
<br />
On why the economic recession was yet to be abated in spite Federal Government’s effort, the traditional ruler called on the government to invest more in farming.<br />
<br />
He further urged that such investment should not be on paper work, radio and television, but by going to the rural areas and joining hands with the community leaders to ensure improved farming.<br />
<br />
“The diversification of the economy is very important because it will assist in raising the revenue generation benchmark as well as the creation of expertise in different fields.”<br />
<br />
“Nigeria is highly endowed, especially with natural resources, with so many deposits in different states of the federation.<br />
<br />
“All that is needed is the commitment of the natural resources to be developed for revenue and less reliance on federal allocation.”<br />
<br />
Speaking on corruption, Yamusa noted that it had remained the bane of Nigeria’s development.<br />
<br />
He called for the reintroduction of the ‘’War Against Indiscipline’’ (WAI), saying that charity should begin at home, especially for the children.<br />
<br />
NAN reports that General Muahmmadu Buhari introduced WAI to instill discipline in the people when he was the Head of State in the 80s.<br />
<br />
According to the emir, if that is done, children will grow with discipline, adding that it would also go a long way to further check corruption in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The monarch commended the present administration for wining war against insecurity in the country but called on the people to see security as a collective responsibility.<br />
<br />
He urged the people to give useful information to security agencies on any suspected movement in their areas to boost the success so far recorded against crime and criminality in the country.</div>

The United Kingdom has denied insinuation that it is in support of any agitation for the break-up of Nigeria.<br />

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Thomas Arkwright, said on Friday that the British government was not supporting those calling for the secession in Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The UK said it would always support Nigeria’s unity and ensure the progress of the country as usual.<br />
<br />
Arkwright spoke in Ilorin, Kwara State when he paid a courtesy visit to the state House of Assembly where he met with the Speaker, Dr. Ali Ahmed and other principal officers of the House.<br />
<br />
“In a word, no, we don’t have anything to do with anyone agitating for the break-up of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“We’re strongly in support of the unity of Nigeria and the Federal Government of Nigeria. And that’s what the British government has consistently supported and we don’t have an interest or support anyone agitating for the break- up of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
“For anyone to say the British government is involved in any way in the break-up of Nigeria is completely wrong,” he said.<br />
<br />
He described Nigeria’s democratic situation as delicate but commended efforts at upholding democratic tenets and keeping the flame of democracy alive.<br />
<br />
France, an ally of defunct Biafra in 1967, had similarly denounced any further step to actualise the secession of South East from Nigeria.<br />
<br />
The country said that such a move had been overtaken by events and no longer in support of break-up of any part of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
France’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Denys Gauer, said his country would not in any way work with any group agitating for the dismemberment of Nigeria.<br />
<br />
He said France was working with Nigeria and supporting it as a country.<br />
<br />
He spoke against the backdrop of France’s previous support for Biafra during Nigeria’s civil war.<br />
<br />
Gauer pointed out that Nigeria has evolved since the civil war.<br />
<br />
France has been cooperating with the country to overcome its challenges, especially the fight against the insurgency.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Whether or not by the combined effect of sections 144 (1) and (2) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, impose a duty on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendants to verify the medical fitness of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria where exist a clear evidence that the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria over a period of time is incapable of performing his constitutional duty due to ill health.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Whether or not by the combined effect of the provisions of section 14 (2) (b), section 143 (1), (2) (11) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended vis a vis the incessant killings and wanton destruction of properties by group identified as herdsmen with no visible and decisive move to end same by the 1st defendant amount to “gross misconduct on the part of 1st defendant.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“Whether the May 2017 recruitment of 479 cadet officers by the Department of State Service (DSS) of which 331 (Three Hundred and Thirty One ) are from the 3 Northern Geographical Zone of North West, North East and North Central with Katsina State having 51 cadet officers, while the 3 South Geographical Zone of West, East and South admitted 143 cadet officers with Lagos having 7 cadet office, contravened section 14(3) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended thereby amount to “gross misconduct” on the part of the 1st Defendant as defined in Section 143 (ii) of the 1999 constitution as amended.”</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Upon the determination of the above three questions, the plaintiffs’ claim against the defendants jointly and/or severally are as follows:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“A Declaration that the combined effect of sections 144 (1) and (2) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, impose a duty on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Defendants to verify the medical state of the 1st Defendant to ascertain whether he is capable of performing his constitutional duty as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“A Declaration that by virtue of Section 14 (2) (b) of 1999 Constitution as amended, the 1st Defendant is duty bound to put an end to the incessant killing and wanton destruction of properties across Nigeria by the group known as herdsmen.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“A Declaration that lopsided recruitment of 479 cadet officers into the Department of State Service contravenes Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“A Declaration that, the non -adherence to Sections 14 (2) (b) and (3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended the 1st Defendant, has failed in his constitutional duties and his oaths of allegiance.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“An Order of Mandamus compelling the 2nd and 3rd defendants to set up a medical panel to examine the medical fitness of 1st defendant to discharge the function of the office of President.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">“An Order of Mandamus compelling the National Assembly to set in motion the provision of Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution.</div>

“To us, we are seeing what he is doing as a business venture. So, as far as we are concerned, a country should not be run as a banana republic where somebody can do anything and get away with it, without respect for the rule of law,” he said.</blockquote>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Shettima also disclsoed that the group was reviewing its stand on the quit notice issued to Igbos living in north.</div>

“We are also reviewing our own situation. We are going to have a meeting soon with other leaders of the coalition and come out with a clear position of things and what we intend to do in order to move forward,” he added.</blockquote>

“Secondly, we intend also to explore all necessary avenues and ensure that, at the end of the day, things are being done in accordance with the law.<br />
“Inasmuch as we appreciate the fact that it is their right to demand self-determination, we are also saying, if you are asking for self-determination, there are certain procedures to go about it,” Shettima stated.</blockquote>

Accreditation and voting in Osun West by-election have commenced on a peaceful note, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.<br />

NAN correspondents monitoring the election across the 10 concerned local governments report that the exercise was being conducted in an orderly and peaceful manner.<br />
<br />
NAN reports that in  Ede South and North Local Government Areas,  INEC ad hoc staff arrived before 8 am while the process commenced on schedule.<br />
<br />
The National Conscience Party agent at Alajue 1, Ward 4, Unit 10, Mr. Abdullai Adewale, commended INEC  for arriving at the polling unit on time.<br />
<br />
Adewale said the process had been peaceful and smooth.<br />
<br />
“For now, the process is free and fair and I hope it will continue till the end of the day.”<br />
<br />
At Abogunde Unit 9, Ward 2 in Ede North Local Government Area, where the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Ademola Adeleke, voted  at 8.34 am,   accreditation and voting also commenced on a peaceful note.<br />
<br />
The All Progressives Congress  (APC) agent at the polling unit,  Murano Taofeek,  who spoke to NAN,  said the electoral  process was free and fair.<br />
<br />
The PDP agent, Bikenny Akanji, also described the process as smooth.<br />
<br />
NAN also reports  that the turn out of the electorate was impressive in some of the polling units visited.<br />
<br />
Voters in Odeomu, Ayedade Local Government,  also turned out for accreditation and voting.<br />
<br />
At Polling unit 16, Ward five, the INEC presiding officer, Ms  Precious Agbor,  said the card  reader machines were  working well.<br />
<br />
Agbor said the electoral process was going on smoothly, adding that  no incident of violence had been recorded.<br />
<br />
The agent of the  APC, Isa Jimoh,  and his PDP  counterpart, Muhamed Abdulmaleek, confirmed that the process  had been smooth.<br />
<br />
Two police officers and one NSCDC officer were seen  some metres away monitoring the exercise.<br />
<br />
Security was also  beefed up on  major roads in the affected  local government areas  where the election was taking place.<br />
<br />
The election did not affect Osogbo, the state capital,  and shops as well as  markets were open  for business activities.<br />
<br />
The election was prompted by the death of Sen. Isiaka Adeleke, who was representing the district at the Senate on April 23.<br />
<br />
Although 12 political parties are  contesting in the bye- election, the   two major contenders are the  PDP  and  APC.<br />
<br />
The younger brother of  late Adeleke, Ademola, is the candidate for the PDP  while Mudashiru Husein, who represented the district between 2011 and 2014,  is the candidate of  the APC.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Saturday Sun has gathered that Evans is not dead as his family now fears but has been moved from the Lagos police command headquarters cell by about 30 heavily armed men at midnight few days ago to an undisclosed destination. <a href="https://www.blogger.com/null" name="more" id="more"></a>Some senior police officers in the know told Saturday Sun he was moved to Abuja Indeed, in the last few days, a palpable silence seemed to have enshrouded the Evans phenomenon.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Where is Evans? It is a question the police is not prepared to officially answer right now. A man who hitherto divulged the details of his criminal life to the public almost on a daily basis is suddenly no longer accessible to even the press corps. All a Saturday Sun reporter who visited the state police command was told was that Evans is no longer allowed to talk to the press till further notice. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The secrecy surrounding his whereabouts in the official quarters baffles those who have closely followed his story since his arrest. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">After days of sniffing around the Lagos police formations to get information on Evans whereabouts, it was gathered that the kidnap kingpin had been moved out of the Lagos command headquarters days ago by heavily armed policemen and is yet to be returned. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Police had last week said they had got a court order to detain him for three months to give them enough time to complete their investigation. This followed two suits filed by Evans lawyer, Olukoya Ogungbeje, at the High Court seeking his release and claiming N300m damages from the police. Some senior police officers who spoke to Saturday Sun on condition of anonymity expressed fears that Evans might not make it to the court. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">They argued that he might plot his escape from prison, or get across to some of his members who are still on the run. Their concerns are not farfetched, given that several inmates in the past had reportedly committed much heinous crimes even while in prison. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Some of the officers confirmed that Evans was no longer in the police cell in Lagos. “He has not been returned since he was moved out. Evans is a broken man; police can’t resort to extra-judicial killings at this point. He is cooperating, and he is ready to help return all his ill-gotten wealth as soon as possible”, one of the officers said. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Another reliable source at the police command told Saturday Sun “Evans is not an ordinary criminal. I guess that they took him out for further investigation but I don’t know why they are yet to return him to his cell.” The source further assured: “No one is planning to kill Evans. I believe that they will return him later. He could be in any good cell in the state for security reasons, but I can assure you that he is not dead yet. Even if anything happens to him, if he dies in custody, it will be as a result of cancer which he claims he is suffering from.”</div>

The Foreign Affairs Ministry has summoned Cameroon’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Amb. Abbas Salahedine, to give explanations on the report of maltreatment and killings of Nigerians in the Bakassi Peninsula by Cameroonian Gendarmes.<br />

A statement by the Ministry’s Acting Spokesperson, Mrs. Jane Adams, expressed dismay on the incident said to have been occasioned by alleged non-payment of taxes on fishing activities.<br />

“The ministry has instructed the Nigerian Missions in Yaounde and Buea, to investigate the report with a view to confirming their veracity and inform Headquarters immediately.<br />
<br />
“The ministry appeals to the Cameroonian authorities to exercise their duty of care and protection over the people of Bakassi, including other Nigerian citizens in the area,” the statement said.<br />
<br />
A report on Friday had stated that no fewer than 97 Nigerians were killed as Cameroon Gendarmes allegedly attacked residents of Bakassi over failure to pay a N100,000 boat levy.<br />
<br />
The report stated that the attackers sacked mainly Nigerians from Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Ondo state.<br />
<br />
Many others were however said to have escaped at midnight with their fishing boats and arrived at Ikang in Bakassi and Ibaka in Akwa Ibom.<br />
<br />
The killing and sacking of Nigerians in former Bakassi are believed to be a violation of the 2005 Green Tree Agreement (GTA) by the Nigeria-Cameroon Mixed Commission.<br />
<br />
The Agreement stipulated that the Bakassi returnees must be properly resettled to their natural habitat so that they can have a meaningful living.<br />
<br />
The GTA also states that Nigerians who choose to remain in Cameroon can do so without any molestation.</div>

The Argentina international and five-time Ballon d'Or winner was given a 21-month prison sentence in 2016, but didn't face jail time.<br />
<br />
Spanish law dictates that first-time offenders are given suspended sentences - meaning they can serve it under probation - if the term is under two years.<br />

Messi attempted to appeal against the sentence in May, but failed. His father on the other hand had his sentence reduced to 15 months.<br />
<br />
The 30-year-old will now pay £221,000 while Jorge will pay £160,000.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Our attention has been drawn to certain publications and we wish to briefly comment on the issues:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">That it is on record that certain personalities threatened the life of one of our recording and performing artiste in the person of Mr. Kingsley Okonkwo (KCEE) and have also gone ahead to threaten to distort the reputable image of KCEE in the eyes of the right thinking members of the society and more especially his esteemed fans and business associates</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In order to protect the life, image, integrity and reputation of our artiste, he approached the court of law to seek for the enforcement of his fundamental human rights which he is entitled to as a Nigerian citizen. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">In addition, he has also sought the Nigerian Police to protect his life and investigate the threat to his life. As a law abiding citizen he did not wish to re-sought to self help reason why he decided to seek a legal solution.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The three suspects, whose names were given as 19-year-old Sakariyau Abdulrofiu, who is an Islamic scholar popularly called Alfa, 24-year-old Ibrahim Ayuba, and 18-year-old Yusuf Aliu, were arrested after the decomposing body of the victim was discovered behind Abdulrofiu’s house.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Shonibare was declared missing from his apartment outside the campus. His corpse was later found in a bush behind the Alfa’s house after nine days of searching.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The matter was reported to the police and operatives immediately arrested Abdulrofiu.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">During interrogation, he confessed that he and the other suspects had killed Shonibare, cut off his head and roasted it as part of the money making rituals.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">According to the report, Abdulrofiu further confessed that they hit the student with a pestle on the head and later butchered him.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He added that the deceased’s head was roasted but said that luck eventually ran out on them and they were apprehended by the police.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Confirming the incident, the state Police Commissioner of Police, CP Olufimihan Adeoye, said the victim was a 400-level Micro-Biology student of the University.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">CP Adeoye said this while parading the suspects at the Command’s headquarters in Oshogbo, adding that they carried out the crime on June 26, 2017, at about 7:30 pm at Oke-Bale area of the state capital.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">He said the suspects conspired and killed Shonibare by hitting him on the head with a pestle before cutting of his head, two wrists and palms which roasted in a clay pot while the victim’s remains were dumped in the bush.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">According to him, friends of the victim reported him missing on June 27 at 7:45 pm while the information obtained from them led to the arrest of Abdulrofiu who is also an apprentice herbalist, as well as his two accomplices.</div>

£10m scam: UK jails Nigerian gang who posed as member of parliament, judges (PHOTO)

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Kayode Sanni, Nigerian illegal immigrant who used the identities of member of parliament, judges and police officers during a £10million scam has been sent to five years in jail. The Central Criminal Court of England and Wales (Old Bailey) found him guilty of leading a gang which used fake identities to swindle the taxpayer hard earned money.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The gang stole personal details from the Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC), which provides sport and fitness facilities to more than 120,000 public sector employees and pensioners.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Adedamola Oyebode, 30, who worked as CSSC events manager, stole the details which he then handed over to her brothers-in-law Oluwatobe Emmanuel Odeyemi, 34, and Oluwagbenga Stephen Odeyemi, 39.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">According to Daily Mail report, The Odeyemi brothers ran the fraud with Sanni. The gang was on course to reaping £10,260,525 only for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs to uncover the ‘extraordinarily high rate’ of claims being made by civil servants.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The jurors said Sanni “lied through his teeth” after he claimed that his “conscience is clear” and denied involvement in the scam. The fraud was perpetrated between 10 March 2009 and 11 June 2013.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Emmanuel Odeyemi, Chantelle Gumbs and Adedamole Oyebode had earlier pleaded guilty to fraud charges.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Odeyemi was sentenced to a prison term of three and a half years; Gumbs , a 15- month sentence suspended for two years; and Oyebode, a two-year sentence suspended for two years.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Judge Paul Dodgson described the offence as a serious fraud.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Sanni expressed remorse for the scam in a letter following his conviction but Dodgson was not impressed.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;">He said:”I think he is remorseful that he got caught. I’m sorry, I just can’t regard that as sincere. I can’t see how someone who contested the matter, who in the jury’s judgement, and in mine as well, just blatantly lied throughout and then claimed to be remorseful”.</blockquote>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Oyebode, who worked for the CSSC between August 2008 and August 2010, admitted supplying lists of members and their details in return for payment. She also made calls to the tax credit helpline to obtain application packs.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Further investigation revealed the fraudsters had used the details to create false identities, buy online insurance and open false bank accounts to receive the cash.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">The profits of the scam were then transferred out into either their own accounts or through Western Union facilities set up by Sanni and Emmanuel Odeyemi.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Jurors were told that two of the gang, Stephen Odeyemi and his wife Oluwatumininu Banjo, 40, had fled to Nigeria and are wanted abroad.</div>

State governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday in Benin declared that Nigerians made a grave mistake by voting President Muhammadu Buhari into office saying that the president had reached a stage of diminishing return when he was voted into power.<br />

He said that most of the people that voted President Buhari did not even know him or assess his capacity for the office, but were brainwashed to vote for a change that has now become a cause to Nigerians.<br />

Governor Fayose also admitted that he was a controversial person because he did things other people dreaded to do.”I am controversial because I am doing things others are not doing because they lack the courage and are afraid. Controversy is necessary in a democratic setting, and we must be courageous enough  and if you are not controversial, then you are afraid”<br />

Speaking in Benin while delivering the convocation lecture of the Benson Idahosa University (BIU), the governor said the time for young Nigerians to pilot the affairs of the nation was now, adding that under his watch, nobody above the age of 50 would become a council chairman while the maximum age for a councillor would be 35.  He said, “You can only give your best at your best. Our president is at diminishing return as at today. I should be quoted.<br />

“We cannot all sleep and face one direction. Idahosa did not do these things when he was close to his grave; he did them at his prime when he had the energy to make a difference.   “How do you give laptop or I-pad to a seventy-something year’s old man? How can we continue to struggle with our sons for positions meant for them?”<br />

On the call for the restructuring of the country, Governor Fayose said past leaders have been paying lip service to the issue, saying that “ the restructuring should be in such a way that  every nation that makes up this country must be respected for what they are”<br />

Speaking on the menace of the Fulani herdsmen, he called on his colleagues to do the needful and educate their people on the activities of the herdsmen, saying that “the security of our people will depend on the capacity of our leaders to confront the issue”<br />
<br />
The governor also demanded for a review of the revenue allocation formula in favour of the States insisting that a situation whereby the Federal Government pockets 52 per cent of the allocation was awkward because the challenges facing the country reside in the states.<br />

He said, “How will the Federal Government take 52 per cent when the problems are in the states? The Federal Government must shed its weight and allow states do the work for them.<br />
<br />
“Federal government must take 22 per cent and states take 52 per cent.<br />
<br />
Governor Fayose praised the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, saying “he is our leader in Yorubaland, forget politics and it does not matter he is in the APC.”<br />
<br />
He revealed that the late Archbishop Benson Idahosa, got his father converted to a born-again Christian at a crusade in Ibadan, Oyo State, in 1980 and that his father later sowed the family’s only car to propagate evangelism.<br />
<br />
He charged the management of BIU to sustain the vision of the late Archbishop Idahosa, saying the man of God could see far beyond his peers when he was alive.<br />
<br />
Fayose said handlers of the education sector must live their words and put those concerned on the driver seat.</div>

“Why I said Nnamdi Kanu is being opportunistic is that the concept of self determination is a valid concept in colonial situations when you have the metropolitan power and the people subjugated by the colonial power.<br />
 “Self determination is to poll inhabitants of the colonized territory whether they want independence or they don’t. After independence, it is no longer a matter of self determination. It becomes one of right to development. Nigerians exercised their right of self determination on the 1st of October, 1960.<br />
“So that has been met and in fact a distinguished professor of international law, my late friend Prof Orji Umezuruike, defended a PhD in Oxford on self determination. People should read. So after independence, the only way you bring change about is not by way of referendum.<br />
“You have to change the facts on the ground militarily. You defeat the federal government militarily. So you have a new state like that of Bangladesh in 1971, like that of Eritrea in 1979, like that of South Sudan four years ago.<br />
“So militarily, you have to confront the federal government and defeat them and then declare your independence. Then there’s question of recognition. So that’s the only way you change the boundaries in Africa.”</blockquote>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja had on Thursday, rejected Melaye’s ex-parte motion for a temporary injunction to restrain INEC from proceeding with the recall process.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">Tsoho only asked the parties to maintain the status quo, pending the hearing of the Motion on Notice.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">A top official of the electoral commission who spoke to The Nation, stated that the recall process will go ahead.</div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq" style="text-align: justify;"> “As at the close of work, we were not served any order, ruling or a process from the Federal High Court.<br />
<blockquote>“Even if we had received any order from the court, our legal unit will still advise us on what the status quo means. We cannot act in vacuum.<br />
“Certainly, we are adhering to our timetable on the recall process. We are going ahead from Monday.<br />
“Any time we get a court order to stop the process, we will comply immediately,” the source said.</blockquote>

<div>Speaking to newsmen yesterday amidst clamour for restructuring, the former governor also added his voice to those calling for the need to restructure the Nigerian state stressing that there is need to adjust what is accrued to the federal, state and local government councils in line with the country’s revenue sharing formula. </div>

<div>He said: “The current revenue sharing formula is heavily in favour of the federal government on the bases of the federal government getting 52.68 percent while the state and local government councils get 26.72 and 20.60 percent respectively. </div>

<div>“I am for load shedding by the federal government. The federal government should do less in primary and secondary education, health, agriculture and water resources. The revenue sharing formula will be adjusted accordingly.” </div>

<div>Reiterating his position and believe in state policing, the governor asserted: “I was one of the earliest advocates of state police even more so now. That is the only way we can reduce the upsurge of kidnapping and other criminal issues in the country.”</div>

Speaking at the 13th convocation lecture of the Benson Idahosa University, Benin City on Friday, Fayose said he is the man to watch in this generation.<br />

On how he would actualise his dream of leading the country, Fayose said he would only align himself with God’s power, saying “with God, nothing is impossible.”<br />

“It is carnality that makes you look at me and think I cannot be president. I am the man to watch in this generation. I surely will become the president. Something has to give way for you to manifest,” he said.
