Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council, OYC, Worldwide, has described the abduction and release of the 344 students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Kastina State as an award winning drama of the year, 2020.
The Okechukwu Isiguzoro-led Ohanaeze group wondered the rationale and idea behind the drama.
According to the OYC, the display may have been carried out to make the service chiefs appear capable or “resist the idea of sacking them from office.”
OYC, in a statement signed by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, its President General and Mazi okwu Nnabuike, Secretary General, also said the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau provided the new blankets displayed by the 344 abducted pupils.

“The evidence of (provisions of) new blankets for over 344 pupils of Kankara boys by Boko haram insurgents makes the abduction fake or jankara and organizers of the drama as amateurs.
“Northern leaders have refused to accept their leadership failures in governance, most of their political leaders are behind the insecurity situations in the north and are benefiting immensely from the huge budgetary allocations mapped out for insecurity challenges, the Kankara boys abduction is business as usual for Northern leaders.”

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has lambasted former President, Goodluck Jonathan following the release of the 344 Kankara schoolboys.
While giving kudos to President Muhammadu Buhari for the successful rescue of the schoolboys, MURIC lambasted the former President for allegedly being undecided and cynical when Chibok schoolgirls were kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2014.
Recall that the 344 boys who were abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State a week ago, returned yesterday, spending exactly one week in the hands of their abductors.
MURIC said this in a statement made available to newsmen on Saturday, and signed by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“We note with every seriousness that the early return of the boys was made possible by Mr. President’s prompt action,” MURIC said.
According to MURIC, the fact that the army began chasing after the kidnappers very early made it possible for them to trace the abductors location.
“We are constrained to compare PMB’s prompt action in the Kankara boys’ affair to the costly procrastination exhibited by ex-President Jonathan after 276 Chibok girls were abducted on 14th April, 2014,” the group added.
“The former president was cynical and undecided. He continued to dilly-dally for about 21 days after the abduction while the army waited for his order.
“Jonathan set up a fact-finding committee nearly a month after the tragedy. This allowed the Boko Haram abductors to dig in,” MURIC said.
Recall that the bandits had on Friday night released the 344 students.

An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, has sentenced one Pastor Odenigbo Theophilus to seven years in prison for defrauding a retiree, Mr. Ojo Gbadebo, of the sum of N1 million under false pretence.
NAN reports that Justice Muniru Owolabi found the defendant guilty in a two-hour judgment delivered on Friday in Ibadan.
Owolabi said that the prosecutor had proved the charge of advance fee fraud against the convict beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge said the convict defrauded the retiree under the guise of helping him to invest his N1 million in engine oil business that would yield an interest of N80,000 monthly.

Owolabi said that the convict admitted using the money to offset a loan instead of investing it in the oil business as agreed.
The judge said that the convict failed to pay the retiree neither the interest nor the capital.
He said that the convict betrayed the trust reposed on him by the retiree being a pastor of the Deeper Life Bible Church in Abolongo, Oyo town.
Owolabi, therefore, sentenced the convict to seven years in prison with hard labour and without an option of fine.
Earlier, the convict’s counsel, Mr Ennis Olayinka, had pleaded with the court to be lenient in sentencing his client, saying he was a first offender and the bread winner of his family.

Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has provided the latest team news ahead of the Red Devils’ home Premier League clash with Leeds United on Sunday evening.

Gerard Lopez has sold Ligue 1 leaders Lille to Callisto, a subsidiary of the Merlyn Partners investment fund, a source close to the club told AFP on Friday.
The new owners have installed Olivier Letang, a 48-year-old former sporting director at Paris Saint-Germain and president of Rennes, as CEO.
Lopez, a Spanish-Luxembourgish businessman, bought Lille from Michel Seydoux in January 2017.
They finished 11th in the table that season, dropped to 17th the following year but have since finished second and fourth.

This season they lead the league after 15 matches and have progressed from the group stages of the Champions League for only the second time, the previous occasion was in 2006.
“I have achieved my goal and I believe that it is now time for a new owner to take over and for me to concentrate on other sporting endeavours,” said Lopez in a statement issued by the club.
Lopez also leaves the club deeply in debt.
He borrowed more than 225 million euros (275 million dollars) from Elliott Management during his first months in office. He was pushed towards the exit by the American investment fund, to which he had repaid less than half of this sum.
“Given the recent difficulties in Ligue 1 and in particular the uncertainty surrounding the TV rights contract for the French championship, it is important that the LOSC is owned by a reputable owner with recognised financial strength such as Merlyn,” Lopez said.
Luxembourg-based Merlyn said in the statement that it focused on “long-term” investments in European assets.
It said Lille’s “outstanding debt will be significantly reduced and new equity will be injected into the club.”
Merlyn said it had hired Letang as CEO because it wanted “to build a new, experienced and strong leadership within the club.”
Under Letang, Rennes beat PSG in the French Cup final in 2019 for their first trophy in 48 years. When Letang left the club in February, saying it was against his wishes, Rennes were third in Ligue 1. They ended the coronavirus-curtailed season still in third, their highest top-flight finish.
He is a former second division midfielder who was described by former colleagues as a workaholic and an unyielding but highly competent boss. He has a reputation for feuding with the coaches he hires.
“My intention is for the club to reach its full potential and I will ensure that LOSC is well managed from a sporting and financial point of view,” Letang said in the Lille statement.

A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has alleged that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari created the abduction of over 300 schoolboys from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.
She said the President and his government should not be congratulated over the release of the schoolboys after six days in captivity.
Ezekwesili said this on Friday night during an interview with Channels Television.
The former minister, who is one of the Co-Conveners of the Bring Back Our Girls group which led the demonstrations for the rescue of over 250 schoolgirls from Chibok in Borno State, said the Buhari regime must tell Nigerians exactly what happened in Kankara when gunmen on motorcycles attacked the school and abducted hundreds of students.

The abduction occurred some hours after the President arrived in Daura, Katsina on December 11 for a week-long private visit.
Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari, however, announced on Thursday that 344 schoolboys were released by bandits in Zamfara State.
But while Nigerians delight in the news of the released schoolboys, Ezekwesili said Buhari should be disgusted with what happened.
She said, “For us to congratulate a government that created a problem and said it solved it? We shouldn’t be doing that. The society should learn how to hold people accountable. The President should be disgusted with what happened, not commending himself. What is he clapping for? Those children were put in harm’s way. And now he said he’s rescued them? Maybe the President sent the children on an excursion to terrorists so they can release children at will to him.
“He needs to tell us exactly what happened with the Kankara kids. There is a problem. This country should not be taken for a ride by President Buhari and his government. This is very unbecoming and the whole world is laughing at us. They think we are jokers. Many countries didn’t even bother to show that anything had happened in our country because they felt who are these people and what are they doing to themselves?”
The Kankara students’ abduction is not the first in the history of the nation. Non-state actors had in the past abducted hundreds of secondary school girls from Chibok, in Borno State; and Dapchi in Yobe State. Some of them eventually regained freedom while a number of them were detained in the enclaves of their abductors and s3xual abusers.

Zamfara State Governor, Hon. Bello Mohammed Matawalle has reacted to the utterances credited to All Progressive Congress (APC) that his administration was responsible for criminal activities in the State as it harbours bandits.
According to a press statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on media and public enlightenment, Comrade Zailani Bappa, Matawalle accused APC of fuelling the criminal activities during former Governor Abdul Aziz Yari’s unfortunate eight year tenure.
The statement noted that President Muhammadu Buhari was satisfied with the peace accord and reconciliation process initiated by Matawalle’s administration as the rate of crime in the State had reduced.
“We all are living witnesses to the fact that during Yari’s tenure, Zamfara state was adjudged as a colony of banditry in the whole world and there is no doubt about that.

“I don’t want to join issues with Abdul Aziz Yari and his cohorts because they are out only to distract the attention of this administration and make it a failure,” he said.
According to the Governor, agricultural activities was moving with the lowest ebb as the farmers abandoned their farming activities due to the fear of terror attacks in the State.
The Governor maintained that the same administration of Yari closed down all functional markets in the State, making the people live in abject poverty and penury.
“We are not claiming that insecurity has totally been eliminated but it is on record that terror attacks have reduced drastically in the state unlike Yari’s unfortunate eight years tenure when people were running away from the State,” he added.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has said that those it described as ‘Naysayers’ have leant their lessons following the release of the 344 Kankara schoolboys.
Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information and Culture, addressed the press on Friday in reaction to release of the 344 schoolboys.
The Minister congratulated the parents and guardians of the schoolboys, who, according to him, will soon reunite with their children and wards.
Mohammed noted that the kidnap of the Kankara boys marked the second of its kind under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Minister noted that Just like the Kankara schoolboys, all but one of the kidnapped schoolgirls from Dapchi, Leah Sharibu, were rescued unharmed.
Lai Mohammed also recalled that in 2014, 276 schoolgirls were abducted by terrorists in Chibok, Borno State, adding that the Buhari administration had been able to rescue over 100.
“Each time this has happened, we have always accepted responsibility, rather than being in denial.
“We will not relent until all those who remain missing in Chibok and Dapchi and reunited with their families.
“The reactions in certain quarters to the Kankara incident was shameful. Some Nigerians went as far as denigrating their government and country in the most uncouth and irresponsible manner.
“They simply threw decorum to the wind and allowed their emotions to take a better part of them. We hope the naysayers have learnt their lessons.
“And we hope those who have started trading and politicking with the hashtag ‘BringBackOurBoys’ can now go home…”

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) has denied they negotiated the release of students of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.
The Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, had said the state government contacted Miyetti Allah to enter into discussion with bandits, in a bid to secure the release of over 330 students abducted from the school.
However, the Daily Sun reports that the National Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Baba Othman Ngelzarma, had made it clear such was not the case.
According to Ngelzarma, “unless the governor was discussing with the Katsina State branch of the association, but definitely not with the national leadership.”

In the same vein, the National President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Abduallahi Bodejo, also insisted nobody contacted them or discussed with them over the same matter.
Bodejo said: “We don’t know the bandits and we don’t want to know them and we don’t have anything to do with them. No member of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore even at local levels knows the bandits.”
The school boys were released on Thursday and met with President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday.

Peter Obi, former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential running mate has described the release of 333 students of GSS, Kankara as a relief to Nigerians.
The students on Friday returned to Katsina State after the Nigerian army secured their release from their abductors.
Recall that Boko Haram leader, Shekau had claimed responsibility for the abduction.
Shekau mentioned that the boys were kidnapped from school to discourage western education and promote Islam.

Reacting to their release, Obi on his Twitter page commended everyone who were on their toes to ensure the release of the students.
His tweet read: “I am elated at the release of the GSSS Kankara schoolboys. It is a huge relief not only for their families but also for Nigerians.
“Everyone involved in the process that led to their release deserves commendation.”
The former Governor, however, noted that there are lessons to learn from the incident which is a compelling need to rejig security architecture.
“There are lessons to be learnt from this unfortunate incident, and one of them is the compelling need to rejig our security architecture,” his tweet added.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has revealed that four land borders have been re-opened following the directives given by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Recall that the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, on Wednesday announced the immediate reopening of four land borders after the Federal Executive Council meeting held virtually in Abuja.
However, the NIS Public Relations Officer, Mr Sunday James in a statement on Abuja on Friday said the service has complied with the Federal Government’s directive on re-opening of land borders in the country, NAN reports.
“In compliance with the directive of the Federal Government, the following four land borders have been re-opened.

“The borders are; Seme in South-West, Illela in the North-West, Maigatari in the North-West and North-East and Mfum, South-South respectively.
“Also, the Comptroller General of NIS has directed the head of the service formation at these borders posts to comply and remove restrictions of human movement.
“The head of the service formation at these borders have equally been instructed to avoid unethical practices and unprofessional conducts.
“All persons entering or exiting the country must hold a valid travel documents as prescribed in the immigration Act 2015 and to observe COVID-19 protocols.
“Lastly, we advise that all travelers to pass through only these four designated authorised borders posts pending the re-opening of others,” the statement said.

Youths in the Niger Delta, under the aegis of Niger Delta Youths Movement, NDYM, have raised alarm over the prolonged forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development commission, NDDC, which started in October 2019.
They called on the presidency to give a timeline when the ongoing audit would be concluded in order to forestall renewed agitation.
The National President of the group, Mr Joe Jackson, in a statement in Uyo on Friday, pointed out that the people of the region had already started getting worried.
He stressed that the presidency should give a timeline when the people would expect the results in order to ease the tension and avert renewed agitations regarding the operations of the NDDC.

According to him, “The attention of the Niger Delta Youth Movement has been drawn to reactions over the ongoing forensic audit of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) which was ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari in October 2019.
“I want to say without equivocation that we (NDYM) strongly support Mr. President’s decision to reposition the interventionist agency for the benefit of people of the Niger Delta region. We, therefore, urge the presidency to give timeline for the conclusion of the forensic audit and when the result of the audit would come out.
“This will help to ease the tension in the region. Already there is renewed agitation for reconstitution of substantive governing Board for the agency, as well as publication of the forensic audit result from the region.
”They (Presidency) should be specific on the duration of the assignment, it cannot last forever. They should be able to say if it is going to be concluded, within the next six months, or one year.”
He also commended President Buhari for appointing Mr Effiong Okon Akwa, the acting director of Finance and Administration, to oversee the affairs of NDDC pending the completion of the forensic audit.
“NDYM has confidence in his capacity to lead the NDDC to achieve success in the forensic audit exercise. We believe that he will not let you down in the responsibility you entrusted in him,” the statement added.

The Coalition Against Terrorism and Extremism (CATE) has described the release of the abducted students of the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara Katsina State as heartwarming and cheering.
CATE noted that the freedom of the schoolboys shows President Muhammadu Buhari’s versatility in leadership, expertise in security matters and seriousness in achieving his promise of securing the lives and property of citizens.
Recall that the presidency had confirmed the freedom of the boys Thursday night after days in captivity, which coincides with the birthday of President Buhari.
Reacting to the development, the anti-terrorism group in a statement through its National Coordinator, Gabriel Onoja, called on the Nigerian government to continue to rally round the federal government and the security agencies to work for the peace and progress of the county.

He said their freedom is, “highly commendable and reassuring coming on the heels of similar unresolved incidences that have left permanent scars on the nation due to the shoddy way they were handled by past administrations.
“The development coming less than a week after the boys were abducted, shows President Muhammadu Buhari’s versatility in leadership, expertise in security matters and seriousness in achieving his promise of securing the lives and property of citizens.
“It is heartwarming to note that since the boys were abducted, the President who was supposed to be in vacation in his hometown of Daura did not go to sleep, but continued to work round the clock until the proper coordinates were put in place for the rescue of the boys.
“Security images showing the abducted boys on their way home hale and hearty just a few days after their abduction have been received with joy by majority of Nigerians and the jubilation has been second to none.
“But President Buhari, who has shown commitment in the undertaking he gave Nigerians on security, has working quietly with the armed forces and security agencies, created the right atmosphere that finally led to the rescue of the boys.
“We note that shortly after the abduction of the boys became public knowledge, the service chiefs moved to Katsina to work on the best strategies for the safe return of the boys.
“We believe it was these concerted and coordinated efforts that made it possible for the security agencies to gain ground and sustain the tempo that eventually led to the release of the boys.
“This is highly commendable as it would serve a serious warning to bandits and terrorists that the government would no longer tolerate such acts and that the government is capable of foiling any attempt to put the lives of innocent citizens in danger.
“Also commendable is the fact that the releases are done without exposing the victims to harm under zero casualty rate.
“At the first quarter of the year, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai had to relocate to the theatre of war in Borno State and did not come back until the insurgents were substantially degraded.
“The Nigerian Military have within the year liquidated a high number of terrorists in their bases in the Northeast, arrested many of their informants and captured quite a number of their weapons that a time the leader of the Boko Haram terrorists, Abubakar Shekau was contemplating surrender.”

The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Edward Onoja took to twitter on Thursday to debunk COVID-19.
Onoja, in a Twitter post, challenged people to name any “non-high profile” person that died of COVID-19.
He also raised doubt on the COVID-19 vaccines.
It would be recalled that his boss Yahayah Bello is also notorious for downplaying the virus, and even suggested that the lockdown measures are politicized.

All abducted schoolboys of Kankara Government Science Secondary School have been released, Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina said today.

Masari gave the number of freed students as 344, more than the 333 he said were abducted initially.
 
According to him, the boys are presently kept safe in Tsafe, a local government area in Zamfara State.
 
Governor Masari noted that the boys would be brought back to Katsina, the state capital on Friday.
 
He said that arrangements had been made for their medical treatment, adding that government did not pay ransom for the release.
In a video released today by Boko Haram, one of the students pleaded with government to negotiate with the terrorists.
He also said some of them had been killed when the military engaged the terrorists in a fire fight.
He urged government not to send the military to free them.
 
The boys were stolen by Boko Haram terrorists from their school in the night of 11 December, after a gunfight with police guards.
 
The Ak 47 gun wielding terrorists stormed the school on auto-bikes.
 
The kidnap triggered a national outrage against the Buhari administration.
 
It also triggered fresh calls for the sack of service chiefs, who have overstayed their tenure in office.
On Monday, Governor Masari said the abductors had made contacts.
 
“The abductors of our Children have made contacts with the Government and talks are ongoing to ensure their safety and return to their respective families.
 
“The security agencies deployed for rescue operations have also informed us that they have located their position”, he tweeted.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has approved the establishment of 10 additional national parks.

Minister of Environment, Mohammad Abubakar, announced this on Thursday at a press briefing in Abuja.
 
He said the establishment of the 10 parks would increase the country’s national parks to 17, adding that an executive bill would be sent to the National Assembly on the development.
 
Abubakar said, “The President has graciously approved the establishment of 10 additional national parks bringing the total number of the national parks in the country to 17.
 
“To give credence and legal backing to this worthy cause, an executive bill will soon be presented to the National Assembly for further necessary action.”
 
The minister stated that the first national park in Nigeria, Kanji Lake, was created in 1979.
 
This, he said, was followed by six others spread across the country.
 
“The creation of additional national parks in Nigeria has become imperative in view of the prevailing effects of climate change across the globe,” Abubakar said.
 
He added, “This action is geared towards the United Nation’s policy of placing 25 per cent of its member countries’ landmass under permanent vegetation cover for carbon sequestration to mitigate the effects of climate change and ameliorate other ecological challenges.”
 
Abubakar said Nigeria currently had 6.7 per cent of its total landmass under vegetation cover, which was grossly inadequate in line with global best practices.
 
He said the parks would further create more employment opportunities, alleviate poverty in rural areas and ultimately enhance the country’s revenue profile.

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, said there were indications that the country had entered the second wave of infections.

Chairman of the PTF and Secretary to the government of the Federation (SGF) Mr Boss Mustapha, who gave the indication, lamented the risk of not just losing the gains from the hard work of the last nine months, but also losing precious lives of citizens.
 
The PTF’s concerns were being expressed ahead of next week’s submission of its end of term report to the President on Dec. 22, 2020.
 
Speaking at the national briefing on Thursday, the PTF chairman, who was represented by the Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika, said: “the events and statistics of the last two weeks, within and outside Nigeria, have been very mixed.
 
“On the one hand, the cheering news of the COVID-19 vaccine, while on the other hand, we have witnessed spikes in the number of infections at home and abroad.
“The real threat is upon humanity and the progress made in the global health sector in the last five decades or more.
“In Nigeria, the indication is that we have entered the second wave of infections and we stand the risk of not just losing the gains from the hard work of the last nine months but also losing the precious lives of our citizens.
“The PTF believes that if we do the right things, adhere to the NPIs and step up our testing and detection, loss of lives will be minimised and the rising curve will begin to flatten”, the chairman said.
 
Mustapha further stated: “We are in a potentially difficult phase of the COVID-19 resurgence; accessing the hope offered by the arrival of the vaccine is still some time ahead.
 
“Vaccines alone cannot cure the virus, rather, but a combination of initiatives, including the NPIs; that more than ever before, we need compliance.”
 
The SGF also stated that the PTF “shall escalate our risk communication and community engagement strategies to higher levels.
 
“Lives have been lost, but we must slow down the pace of the spread, and at the rate at which the numbers are rising should be examined and our vigilance and compliance with the NPIs should be intensified,” he said.
 
On the report to be submitted next week, Mustapha said: “Last Tuesday, the PTF held the end of term technical session. It afforded the PTF the opportunity to assess the progress made and the present dangers that confront us.
“The report of the PTF will be submitted to the President on Tuesday, 22nd December 2020. Current realities, however, point to the fact that the course of further opening up of the economy may have to be reviewed,” he said.
While cautioning Nigerians ahead of the Christmas season, the PTF said: “the festive season is here and we remain conscious of the fact that large gathering events will take place.
“It is our strong advice that all non-essential trips be cancelled outrightly. We also urge citizens to avoid large gathering events,” he added.

Nigeria Thursday night posted 1,145 COVID-19 cases, its highest daily record till date, according to data published by the NCDC.
Two states, Lagos and Kaduna and the capital Abuja accounted for 64 percent of the monster cases.

Lagos recorded 459 cases, its highest daily since February, when the pandemic touched Nigeria, with the arrival of an Italian.
 
Abuja followed with 145 cases and Kaduna 138.
Plateau, where Governor Simon Lalong reported today that he tested positive to the virus, registered 80 cases.
Katsina reported 70 and Gombe 52.
Governor of Niger state, Abubakar Sani Bello, whose state logged 31 cases has ordered government workers to stay at home until further notice..
In all, a record 24 states confirmed new infections, as the second wave of the COVID-19 appears to be exploding in Nigeria.
The NCDC reported just one death in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 1201.
“Till date, 76,207 cases have been confirmed, 67,110 cases have been discharged in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory”, the NCDC stated.
 
The data released also indicated there are now 7,896 actives cases, after 864,104 samples tested as at Thursday 17 December.
At a briefing in Abuja on Thursday, NCDC Director-general, Chikwe Ihekweazu, warned Nigerians to observe the COVID-19 protocols as they prepare for Christmas and New Year.
He urged traditional and religious leaders to ensure public compliance with the measures.
“As you celebrate, you should #TakeResponsibility by adhering to recommended safety measures,” he advised.

Scores of physically challenged persons from the Niger Delta region are on rampage at the National Assembly.
They besieged the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Thursday morning to protest what they termed neglect by their representatives in the National Assembly.
Newsmen reports that the physically challenged persons forced themselves inside the National Assembly Complex despite resistance by security operatives at the NASS gate.
Security aides of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, hurriedly moved away his official vehicles parked at the entrance of the Senate new wing.

The spokesperson for the physically challenged persons, Amos Etim, told newsmen that they arrived at the National Assembly from the various states of Niger Delta to demand their rights from their representatives.
They claimed that they were being denied their rights despite being educated.

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a holiday security alert to its citizens and others planning to travel to Nigeria.
The US Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General Lagos in the new security alert posted on its website warned US citizens that insecurity may increase during the holiday period.
The alert stated that “Crime is endemic throughout Nigeria.”
It adding that “terrorist organizations and individuals inspired by extremist ideology exist throughout Nigeria.

“We remind U.S. citizens to exercise caution while traveling and residing in Nigeria. Crime is endemic throughout Nigeria, ranging from petty street crime to carjacking, and crime levels tend to increase during the holidays.”
The statement also highlighted several places such as mall, religious centres, transport hubs as likely targets for extremists.
“Demonstrations are relatively commonplace in Nigeria and generally affect traffic flow, especially if they progress along major thoroughfares. Criminal and other elements often infiltrate large gatherings.
“Shopping centers, airports, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, transportation hubs, street markets, and other public venues frequented by Westerners are common attack targets,” it said.

Robbers have abducted a 10-year-old boy, Chimeremezie Izu, of No. 5 Kelvin Street, Core Area 4, GRA, Asaba, the Delta State capital.
It was gathered that the young boy was taken away from his mother after the robbers, who broke into the apartment, could not lay hands on cash and valuables around 3.30am on Wednesday.
The mother of the boy, Mrs Joy Izu, told our correspondent that her face was covered and her hands were tied after they discovered little money in the house.
She said, “The men actually came to rob us but could not find cash and they took my only son away. I was asleep when I heard a sound and I woke up and ran from my room to my children’s room around 3.37am this morning (Wednesday).

“I saw them and I asked the children what happened, whether something fell down, and they said nothing but I insisted that I heard a sound. So, I heard another sound and as I turned, I saw the flash of a torchlight by the entrance door to my room.
“So, I ran inside my room and started shouting: ‘Armed robbers’, ‘Please help me’. One of them came to the window of my room and asked me to shut up or he would shoot me. So, I ran into the toilet and I continued shouting but nobody came out.
“Before I knew it, they were already inside my room; they brought me out of the toilet and asked me to bring out the money. So, I pointed at one box and I said the money was inside and they ordered me to bring it down and I brought it down.
“There was no money at home. Actually, I was trying to delay them to see if other residents could come to our rescue. I brought down about three or four bags to delay them. So, after everything, they beat me and said I was deceiving them.
“They collected my ATM card and forced me to give them the PIN before taking my Android phone and the small amount on me and they went to the children’s room. They saw their piggy bank, broke it and removed all the money in it. They covered my face and asked me to lie down.
“They wanted to carry me but they said if they did that, who would bring money for them. So, they were contemplating whether to carry my son or daughter. Finally, they took my son, collected one of my phones and asked me to call them this morning, and they left”.
In a related incident, two persons were said to have been killed inside their houses by unknown persons, who stormed the New General Hospital area of Asaba on Tuesday.
It was gathered that the victims were killed without the assailants taking anything from their apartments.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the killings and promised to get back to our correspondent on the kidnap.
“Some people, who were doing morning devotion, were killed according to reports. I think they were shot from the window and bullets hit two persons, who were rushed to hospital but were pronounced dead there; but for the kidnapping incident, I am not aware of it for now,” she stated.

The Vice Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, says the institution has attracted over N8bn research grants in the past three years.
Ogundipe disclosed this in an interview on the sidelines of a ceremony to hand over the vertical extension of the Faculty of Law of the institution, on Wednesday in Lagos.
Alhaji Femi Okunnu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and former Federal Commissioner for Works and Housing, donated N100m for the construction of the extension.
”In the past three years of this administration, I want to say that we have been able to attract research grants of over N8bn.

“Already, this faculty of law has just been awarded an international grant of $45,000 and another one of $20,000.
“That is the direction a university should go. The university is the light. We are supposed to lighten the society and that is the path we are taking in UNILAG, reaching out for grants,” he said.
He noted that about 20 of his colleagues from the institution were currently being interviewed by the TETFund for research grants, adding that the grants were worth N20 million each.
”I am sure they will all get the N20 million each and if I should put these amount together, it will translate to a total of N400 million other research grants and this is going to go a long way in moving the university to an envious height.
”You must realise that our research now is demand-driven to assist the country achieve its much desired accelerated growth and that is what UNILAG is aiming at, as the university of first choice that it truly is,” Ogundipe stated.
He added that the gesture from Okunnu was a life-changing one, worth emulating, noting that there was the need for more of such, from friends of the institution and other stakeholders.
Ogundipe noted that there was also the need to support scholars who can compete locally and globally, just like the students.
According to him, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, is keen about the progress of the institution, adding that he is conscious of the fact that it is the country’s flagship university.
Ogundipe said these gestures were all in line with one of his foremost visions for the institution, which is to “Pick a Project; Pick a Programme or Pick a person”.
”That is what we are saying; support us in terms of project, support us in terms of picking a programme and in terms of picking a person.
“There are so many indigent students who cannot afford to pay their fees here.
”We learnt sometimes ago that some people sleep around the library and do you know that half of those who are staying there are students?.
”And 80 per cent of those students had more than 4.0 CGPA, but they could not afford to pay for accommodation. So we are calling on people to assist these indigent students,” he said.
Prof. Adele Jinadu, who represented the donor, said the donation was meant to impact humanity.

Tottenham Hotspur boss, Jose Mourinho, has revealed that he told Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, that “the best team lost”, following his side’s Premier League 2-1 defeat against the Reds.
Liverpool defeated Tottenham at Anfield, thanks to two goals from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino.
Heung-Min Son did score a goal for Mourinho’s side.
“I told him the best team lost, and he disagreed, but that’s his opinion,” Mourinho told Amazon Prime Video when asked what he told Klopp after the game.

Mourinho added, “By the way, if I behave the same way on the touchline like he does, I’ve no chance to stay there, and I’m out for a minute.”

Olusegun Bamgbose, a chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, has declared that he has positioned himself to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari come 2023.
He said that 2023 will certainly be a year of surprises, noting that the Nigerian youth were fed up with the old politicians who make promises but end up doing little for the masses who voted them in.
“2023 is a year of changing the status quo. It’s never going to be business as usual,” Bamgbose posited while addressing a crowd of NNPP supporters in Lagos on Wednesday.
Bamgbose, who is also a frontline lawyer, said that political heavyweights such as the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Bola Tinubu, will not stop him from taking over the presidency.

“The Nigerian youths will certainly set the pace come 2023. I’m strategically positioning myself to take over from Buhari, not minding the odds and the obstacles,” he added.
“Nigerians in 2023 will have to choose between a richer candidate or a better candidate, a popular candidate or a passionate candidate.
“I won’t wait for campaign to start before showcasing my potentials and capabilities. The security situation in the country will need a firm and fearless leader to handle in order to produce positive results.
“Hopefully by next year, there is a plan in the offing to minimize crime nationwide. We are concluding on that soon. The jobless youths in the country would soon have cause to smile, because something great is in the pipeline.
“Hopefully by next year, we shall introduce, Special Unemployment Relief Fund, SURF and Poverty Alleviation Special Scheme, PASS. I’ve plans to defeat any other aspirant, including Tinubu.
“I can modestly submit that I’m getting prepared to take over from Buhari. NNPP will produce the next President of Nigeria. The next President of Nigeria, will be elected, not necessarily on the basis of party affiliation but personality.
“I’m passionate about building a better Nigeria than any other person in Nigeria. I’ve plans to empower not less than 100,000 jobless Nigerians before 2023 Presidential elections.
“If I fail in this perspective, then I should not be seen as a man of honour. It’s as serious as that. By His grace, I’m the next President of Nigeria.”

Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, has disclosed why the president delayed in appointing ministers during his first tenure.
Shehu said upon his inauguration in 2015, Buhari had long meetings with Permanent Secretaries and heads of the various government agencies and departments.
He said the meetings took some few months, hence delayed Buhari’s appointment of ministers.
Shehu disclosed this in an article to mark Buhari’s 78th birthday.

The Defence Headquarters, on Wednesday, says the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari is safe in Daura, Katsina State.
The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. John Enenche, who stated this today, noted that the security of the President is not threatened by the activities of bandits in his home state.
Bandits had stormed the Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, on Friday night and abducted over 300 schoolboys after a gun duel with the police. Buhari had arrived in the state the same day for a week-long private visit –hours before the abduction took place.
Speaking Wednesday while featuring on Arise TV’s The Morning Show monitored by newsmen , Enenche said the President’s safety is guaranteed in his home town.

He said, “One of the major tasks of the Armed Force of Nigeria is to ensure the protection of government and state actors and in that regard, the Commander-In-Chief is very safe in Katsina and anywhere that he is or will be at all times.”
Enenche, while dismissing reports that terrorist group, Boko Haram, was responsible for the Kankara abduction, said military operations are ongoing to secure the release of the abducted schoolboys.
Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a recording on Tuesday, had said the abduction of the schoolboys was done in order to discourage people from obtaining western education.
But reacting to the claim by the terror group, Enenche said, “On the basis of the characteristics of terrorists all over the world from the time of Al-Qaeda, Taliban, Al-Shabaab, all of them, wherever they will boost their ego or show relevance, that is what they will do.
“What did they even do? Somebody spoke on audio and said, ‘I am Shekau.’ Shekau on a secondary note is a brand. All that needs to be done is somebody using his voice. The total aim of terrorists is to instill fear into people even beyond their scope of influence.
“So, it is easy for the layman to agree that it is them (Boko Haram) because even if it is kidnappers or armed robbers, their aim is to instill fear and kill.”
Enenche, however, appealed to the parents of the abducted students to “have short patience” with the military forces. “With what the military is doing, by the grace of Almighty God, very soon, the children will be back,” he said.
He also called for more cooperation by all stakeholders and the people of Katsina State to ensure the schoolboys are rescued without any record of casualty.
The Kankara students’ abduction is not the first in the history of the nation. Non-state actors had in the past abducted hundreds of secondary school girls from Chibok, in Borno State; and Dapchi in Yobe State. Some of them eventually regained freedom while a number of them were detained in the enclaves of their abductors and sexual abusers.

As the second wave of Covid-19 virus infection ravages Nigeria, the death toll in Kwara State has risen to 31.
A Covid-19 Kwara update released in Ilorin by the government, on Tuesday, also announced 19 new confirmed cases.
Total number of confirmed cases is now put at 1245, with 11255 as total tests done.
One hundred and twenty active cases have so far in the State, while 1094 patients have been discharged.

A gas pipeline leakage along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has caused panic among residents of Arepo, Magboro, and other neighbouring communities.
As of the time of filing this report, the gas is still leaking near the Punch Newspaper axis of the expressway.
It was gathered that the gas pipeline ruptured during construction works on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday.
A resident of Forthright Gardens Estate, Omobolaji, told one of our correspondents that a loud sound was heard around 9:30 a.m.

According to him, the pipeline eruption caused panic as many residents of the estate rushed out of their apartments.

Mr Emmanuel Ibah, a member of the Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is dead.
Ibah died of COVID-19-related complications at the age of 61.
His death was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the NFF.
The statement read in part: “Family sources confirmed to the NFF that Ibah, who was also Chairman of the Akwa Ibom Football Association, gave up the ghost on Tuesday morning after succumbing to complications from the new coronavirus pandemic.

The federal government has approved a five-year nutrition action plan that will help to reduce hunger and malnutrition across the country.
The spokesmen to the  Vice President, Laolu Akande, who made this known in a statement, said the plan was approved by the National Council on Nutrition which is chaired by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
The statement said the plan will help in addressing the problems of hunger and malnutrition across all sectors in Nigeria.
“The approved plan will reduce the proportion of people who suffer malnutrition by 50%; increase exclusive breastfeeding rate to 65%.

“It will also reduce stunting rate among under-five year olds to 18% by 2025 through the scaling up of priority high impact nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions.
“The plan recommends the adoption of strategies aimed at improving the nutritional status of Nigerians by tackling undernutrition, amongst others,” the statement said.

Former Nigerian Finance Minister, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged the Federal Government to do everything possible to bring back the over 300 schoolboys abducted from Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, Katsina State.
According to her, those using the children as pawns must be held accountable.
Okonjo-Iweala, who is the leading candidate for the job of director-general of the World Trade Organisation, made this known on Twitter last night.
She wrote, “The abduction of more than 300 schoolboys in Katsina is heartbreaking. What a recurring nightmare. My heart goes out to the families of the missing boys. The authorities must do all possible to #BringBackOurBoys! Those using our children as pawns must be held accountable!”

Bandits had stormed the school on Friday night and abducted the students after a gun duel with the police. President Muhammadu Buhari had arrived in the state on Friday, hours before the abduction took place.
Boko Haram terrorist group, on Tuesday, claimed responsibility for the abduction, saying it had not entered into negotiations with the government contrary to claims by the authorities.
The terror group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a recording, also said the dastardly act was done in order to discourage people from obtaining western education.
The Kankara students’ abduction is not the first in the history of the nation. Non-state actors had in the past abducted hundreds of secondary school girls from Chibok, in Borno State; and Dapchi in Yobe State. Some of them eventually regained freedom while a number of them were detained in the enclaves of their abductors and sexual abusers.

Scores of youths and students from Ibarapa geo-political zone in Oyo State, on Tuesday protested the killings of thier kinsmen.
It was gathered that many farmers and other innocent residents of the area had been killed by some people suspected to be either kidnappers or armed robbers.
The latest killing is that of a chieftain of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Dr. Fatai Aborode.
But, youths and students in the zone had on Tuesday protested against incessant killings in the zone.

Some of the youths described kidnapping as a recurring decimal with many residents of Ibarapa land constantly living in anguish and fear.
One of the protesters, Mr. Oladiran Oladokun while addressing journalists, urged the State government to mandate Caretaker Chairmen in the zone to clear bushes in Ibarapa land.
Oladokun, who doubles as Convener, Igangan Development Advocate (IDA), urged the State government to openly condemn such killings and other dastardly acts in Ibarapa land.
He decried that the State anti-grazing law had only remained on paper with no implementation.
Oladokun said, “We are not anti-government; we are also in government and we want the government to work.
“During election times they can come to our own Ibarapa and seek for votes and now that we are being slaughtered, where is their presence?
“Where is the government presence and why have they been silent since these issues have started?
“Why hasn’t the government made any open denouncement of these and we are left in silence?”

Frank Lampard believes Chelsea have become complacent after the Blues blew a lead to lose 2-1 at Wolves and suffer back-to-back Premier League defeats for the first time during his reign in charge.
Twice in four days Chelsea have wasted the chance to move top of the Premier League after losing for the first time in 18 matches at Everton on Saturday.
Lampard himself called into question his side’s title credentials after a 1-0 loss at Goodison Park at the weekend and believes his players may have got carried away with their unbeaten run.
“Performance is what gives you results. We were playing very well, on a long unbeaten run and then maybe the lads think ‘we’re playing well’. The minute you think you’re playing well, things like this can happen,” said a visibly irked Lampard after Pedro Neto broke clear to win the game in the 95th minute.

“If you’re not playing well which we weren’t tonight, hang on to the 1-0. Play, control the game, and don’t allow counter attacks like we did.”
There was more evidence that Chelsea are still a team in transition after a £220 million ($294 million) transfer spending spree as two of their big money signings, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, again failed to sparkle.
Lampard’s men remain in fifth, three points adrift of Tottenham and Liverpool at the top, ahead of a clash between the top two at Anfield on Wednesday.

Chelsea’s record signing Havertz had another night to forget. The German international was replaced by Mateo Kovacic, while Tammy Abraham replaced the injured Giroud as Lampard went in search of a winner.
Yet, it was Wolves who looked the more likely winners in the closing stages.
Neto thought he had won a penalty when driving past James, but after a VAR review referee Stuart Attwell overturned his original decision as there was no contact on the Portuguese winger.
However, Neto was not to be denied on the counter-attack deep into stoppage time as he accelerated past Zouma and drove low into the far corner to move Wolves into the top half of the table and within three points of the top four.

Paris Saint-Germain forward, Neymar, has sent a message to his friend and former team-mate Lionel Messi after the Champions League draw.
Neymar will be making a return to the Nou Camp for the first time since 2017, when he left in a world-record £198million transfer.

Messi was included in the ultimate XI by France Football alongside Lev Yashin, Cafu, Franz Beckenbauer, Paolo Maldini, Xavi, Lothar Matthaus, Pele, Diego Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ronaldo Nazario.
“For me, it’s an honour to have been included in the XI of the Ballon d’Or Dream Team,” Messi wrote on Instagram.

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele has put Nigerians on red alert and called the attention of everyone to prayers against deaths as a result of Covid-19.
The prophet, in a statement to newsmen on Tuesday, made it known that the novel virus won’t be going away soon, and that it has a mission to kill important personalities, and those who are behind the retrogression of Nigeria as a country.
Ayodele said that God is angry with the present government and those who have disrupted the country.
He spoke on the political situation of Imo State, explaining that the governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma might get the shocker of his life if he doesn’t sit right.

Continuing, he noted that the Senatorial election in Okigwe Zone that saw the INEC declaring APC as the winner without a candidate will be given to the candidate of the PDP, Chief Emmanuel Okewulonu because God has anointed him to rule.
“COVID-19 is ready to kill more people that are making Nigeria to go backward, more personalities will die of Covid-19. Let Nigerians join me in prayer between 1st and 14 of January to pray against death in Villa, Covid-19 is still much around.
“Apart from this, the review of Imo state governorship election will still take place, Hope Uzodinma should sit right otherwise he will see the shocker of his life.
“On the senatorial election of Okigwe Zone, if they put any APC candidate wrongly, he will not rule, thus said the Lord. Only the PDP candidate, Emmanuel Okewulonu is anointed to be on the senatorial seat of Okigwe Zone
“God is angry with people who have disrupted this country either you are a pastor, politician or anybody, I will elaborate more on this on the 22nd of December.”
