Organisations and public institutions must run their businesses in a forthright manner.<br /> <br /> “Make integrity the heart and soul of your business culture.<br /> <br /> “If the entrepreneur does not have integrity, others who walk with him or her will definitely falter and the society will also suffer for his self-centeredness and misconduct.”<br /> <br /> He said that if the operating structure of the government is transparent, accountable and operate against the backdrop of genuine transformation, economic ventures and investments would sprout and the national reserve will swell, good planning will see public infrastructure booming and becoming reliable.<br /> <br /> “When justice rules a nation, everyone is glad; when injustice rules everyone groans. Show me a righteous ruler and I will show you a happy people and a wholesome society,” noted.<br /> <br /> Obasanjo said that Kolade had distinguished himself as an icon of integrity and transparency throughout his career in the corporate world as well as national and international assignments.<br /> <br /> He urged Nigerians to adopt the lifestyle of Kolade to transform and rebuild the country.<br /> <br /> Also, Dr Christopher Kolade, a former Nigerian High Commissioner to the U.K., urged Nigerians to uphold the virtue of integrity in their dealings to make Nigeria a better country.<br /> <br /> “This kind of gathering gives us the encouragement to believe that no matter the difficulties, there is hope that things can be better.<br /> <br /> “God has created in us the capacity to practice integrity — to know right from wrong and to chose right over wrong.<br /> <br /> “Although there is a cost or a price to pay for that moral courage to do what is right and stand for what is right, even when you are standing alone.<br /> <br /> “But there is a rebuilding of the spirit in you that makes you feel stronger to face whatever is coming.<br /> <br /> “I encourage us to always uphold integrity, doing what is right because if you do what is wrong, someone is going to pay a price they do not need to pay.<br /> <br /> ”And if many of us are not very pleased with where we are now as a nation and we want to see genuine national transformation, we need to persevere in doing what is right.<br /> <br /> “Upholding integrity is a life long race because in the end, not only does it do you some good personally but that is the best contribution to the building of the nation,” Kolade said.<br /> <br /> In her address, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, Chairperson, Governing Board of Integrity, said that lack of integrity had a grave human and future cost.<br /> <br /> “Lack of integrity which is driving corruption in our country is an issue we must overcome, not just for our businesses but also for our nation.<br /> <br /> “We cannot give up, we have a country to build and a future to secure for our children. He was travelling home from Owerri to Nkwerre, our home town. The gunmen blocked him on the Isu-Njaba road.<br /> <br /> “They made away with him. His corpse was found after the national convention. This is very saddening and highly devastating.<br /> <br /> “Desperate politicking has no place in a decent democracy. The deceased was a gentleman. He was educated and civil in all his dealings.<br /> <br /> “We urge the security agencies to bring his killers to book. Imo is not known for violent politicking. Organisations and public institutions must run their businesses in a forthright manner.<br /> <br /> “Make integrity the heart and soul of your business culture.<br /> <br /> “If the entrepreneur does not have integrity, others who walk with him or her will definitely falter and the society will also suffer for his self-centredness and misconduct.”<br /> <br /> He said that if the operating structure of the government is transparent, accountable and operate against the backdrop of genuine transformation, economic ventures and investments would sprout and the national reserve will swell, good planning will see public infrastructure booming and becoming reliable.<br /> <br /> “When justice rules a nation, everyone is glad; when injustice rules everyone groans. Show me a righteous ruler and I will show you a happy people and a wholesome society,” noted.<br /> <br /> Obasanjo said that Kolade had distinguished himself as an icon of integrity and transparency throughout his career in the corporate world as well as national and international assignments.<br /> <br /> He urged Nigerians to adopt the lifestyle of Kolade to transform and rebuild the country.<br /> <br /> Also, Dr Christopher Kolade, a former Nigerian High Commissioner to the U.K., urged Nigerians to uphold the virtue of integrity in their dealings to make Nigeria a better country.<br /> <br /> “This kind of gathering gives us the encouragement to believe that no matter the difficulties, there is hope that things can be better.<br /> <br /> “God has created in us the capacity to practice integrity — to know right from wrong and to chose right over wrong.<br /> <br /> “Although there is a cost or a price to pay for that moral courage to do what is right and stand for what is right, even when you are standing alone.<br /> <br /> “But there is a rebuilding of the spirit in you that makes you feel stronger to face whatever is coming.<br /> <br /> “I encourage us to always uphold integrity, doing what is right because if you do what is wrong, someone is going to pay a price they do not need to pay.<br /> <br /> ”And if many of us are not very pleased with where we are now as a nation and we want to see genuine national transformation, we need to persevere in doing what is right.<br /> <br /> “Upholding integrity is a life long race because in the end, not only does it do you some good personally but that is the best contribution to the building of the nation,” Kolade said.<br /> <br /> In her address, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, Chairperson, Governing Board of Integrity, said that lack of integrity had a grave human and future cost.<br /> <br /> “Lack of integrity which is driving corruption in our country is an issue we must overcome, not just for our businesses but also for our nation.<br /> <br /> “We cannot give up, we have a country to build and a future to secure for our children. Over 300 of our members were disengaged by some oil companies. We will embark on an indefinite strike if these companies do not reinstate these workers.<br /> <br /> “If by midnight of Monday, July 9, 2018, the concerns of the union are not addressed by these companies, the union shall have no choice but to embark on an indefinite industrial action until our grievances are addressed.<br /> <br /> “We are calling and directing tanker drivers, drilling workers and pump attendants to withdraw their services if there is no counter-notice to this,” the NUPENG chairman added.<br /> <br /> Agwanwor alleged that the oil workers were laid off because they refused to sign a document that would turn them to casual workers.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, the union at the national level has expressed its support for the planned indefinite strike, even as it sympathised with the families of victims of the recent fire incident in Lagos, which claimed nine lives.<br /> <br />  NUPENG Deputy National President, Bassey Harry, attributed the fire incident to bad road, adding that contrary to claims in some quarters, the tragedy was not as a result of careless driving by the tanker driver.<br /> <br /> “We also give a full support to the zonal action. Though managing to build a small house in the Ibafo area of Ogun State to shelter his family, the middle-aged man has continued to contend with all manner of struggles in his quest for a major breakthrough in life.<br /> <br /> On Thursday afternoon, while ferrying passengers in his 18-seater bus from Lagos to the Mowe/Ibafo area of neighbouring Ogun, a bigger worry was added to Olaitan’s growing list. A speeding tanker laden with around 33, 000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit – one of the deadliest and easily combustible liquids in the world – that had lost control suddenly fell a few metres away from Otedola Bridge, a popular axis along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, spilling its content all over the place and bursting into flames shortly afterwards. The 41-year-old whose commercial bus was directly behind the ill-fated tanker, the moment brought a glimpse of perhaps what the end of the world would look like.<br /> “I saw darkness everywhere immediately the tanker exploded,” he said while speaking with newsmen on Friday on his hospital bed where yards of bandages now strapped him like an armour. “I thought I was going to die. It was as if the end had come. There was commotion everywhere, just like in a war. Nothing else came to my mind. We all believed it was the end,” he added soberly as he narrated his ordeal to his teary-eyed wife – Faidat – and other family members, who had come to check on him on Friday morning. One of our correspondents, who was at the Trauma and Burns wing of the Gbagada General Hospital where he and a handful other victims of the tragedy are being treated, went in with the party after posing to security men as his relative.<br /> <br /> While attributing his narrow escape to divine grace, the Ile-Ife indigene said that for a few minutes after the tanker fell, he and others in the vehicle were confused as to what to do. He revealed that it was while it was being argued that the content of the truck was diesel or petrol that the entire place erupted in flames. According to him, after being briefly knocked out by the sound of the explosion, he managed to regain consciousness and enough strength to force his way out of the bus through the front passenger seat. But even after exiting the vehicle, his fears were far from over.<br /> <br /> “I jumped into a gutter full of dirty water immediately I forced my way out of the bus,” he said, slowly adjusting his sitting position on the bed. “I had hoped to use the water to quench the fire on my body but unknown to me the water had already mixed with the petrol that had spilled from the tanker. That compounded my problem. While I was struggling to quench the fire on my body, I did not know that my head was burning. I managed to run across the road and into an uncompleted building where people around helped me put out the fire. That was my saving grace, otherwise only God knows what would have happened to me,” he stated.<br /> <br /> Revealing how the tragedy and her husband’s present condition had affected their life as a family, Faidat told newsmen that things had not remained the same since Thursday. According to her, they had expended almost all the money on them in trying to save his life.<br /> <br /> “This tragedy has completely changed our life as a family,” she began. “The thought of him lying in the hospital and battling for survival has left us restless.<br /> <br /> “My husband usually does not go out on Thursdays. No matter how much you offer him, he would not go to work on that day. But he went out to work that day because he was arrested by LASTMA operatives on Monday and he used all the money he realised to settle them. He had no money on him and that was why he decided to go out on Thursday to work.<br /> <br /> “I heard of the incident from one of our neighbours whose shop I had gone to buy something. Immediately I got into the house, I called my husband’s number but it was switched off. I called one of our children to warn him not to come home yet because of the incident but his number didn’t go through. Later, my husband used one of the nurses’ numbers to call and inform me that he was involved in the incident.<br /> <br /> “I was really scared when I heard the news. In fact, all sorts of thoughts came to my mind but I thank God that he didn’t die. We are praying for his recovery now,” she said.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Like the rest of the victims affected by Thursday’s deadly inferno, Mr. Wasiu Amoo had no inkling of what laid in wait for him when he left his home at Ibafo for work at nearby Kara that fateful morning. A dealer in granite and other building materials in the area, the 68-year-old, who lost his wife and best friend of several decades about three years ago, after completing another productive day at work, was heading home that evening when the commercial bus he boarded was caught up in the tragedy. While other younger passengers managed to escape with minor burns and injuries, Amoo, perhaps due to age, couldn’t summon a similar swiftness. By the time he managed to drag himself to safety, there had been significant damage done to his aging body. He hangs precariously unto life at the Lagos hospital.<br /> <br /> “Large parts of his body were severely burnt,” the 68-year-old’s daughter and fifth child, Aminat told newsmen during an encounter on Friday. “He has not been able to open his eyes since that incident. Initially, he was not able to talk but after oxygen was administered on him on Friday morning, he had been talking gradually.<br /> <br /> “Also, since that incident, he had not been able to urinate on his own; the nurses have been using a device to assist him to do that. He has been complaining of pains.<br /> <br /> “We are praying to God to preserve his life. He is a good father; we cannot afford to lose him now. Since we lost our mother three years ago, he has been playing both roles for us. We beg God to spare his life,” she said.<br /> <br /> Asked if there was any sort of premonition of something terrible happening before the incident, Aminat, who lives with her husband in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, said that though she wouldn’t say that there was a warning, she had felt uneasy for about three days prior to the tragedy without knowing what the problem actually was.<br /> <br /> “For about three days before the incident, I was always having bad feelings,” she disclosed. “I couldn’t explain what the problem was. The tanker driver was waving at other vehicles behind not to come close. As it approached Oando Filling Station, there was traffic and the driver decided not to move forward again. As he tilted the tanker towards the culvert in the middle of the road so that it would stop, the tanker started descending. One of the motor boys quickly disembarked and started throwing a big wood in front of the tyre to stop it. But the tanker climbed a stone and fell. Fuel started gushing out but the others said it was diesel and that it wouldn’t explode.<br /> <br /> “But something told me that even if it was diesel, we were supposed to run for safety. So, I asked everyone in the car to run. I had not run up to 100 metres before the tanker exploded. It was like a bomb exploding in a war. I didn’t look back again until I reached Isheri.<br /> <br /> “Williams and another colleague, called Aunty Maria are still missing. Another colleague inside the car who managed to escape had his scalp seriously burnt. I pray not to witness anything like this in my life again,” he said as he battled tears.

If there will be DNA, the government will decide on it and make a pronouncement.”<br /> <br /> Our source, who visited the Trauma Centre of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Ikeja and the General Hospital at Gbagada, Lagos, observed a lot of people making enquiries on the whereabouts of their folks.<br /> <br /> Some of them faulted government’s claim that only nine persons died in the incident, insisting that many people, including school children, were yet to be accounted for.<br /> <br /> Although officials at the Trauma Centre and LASUTH claimed that neither dead nor injured victims were brought to the premises, it was learnt that five injured persons were transferred from the former to Gbagada General Hospital.<br /> <br /> It was gathered that while two men were moved to the emergency ward of the hospital on Thursday night, a woman named Mrs. Ade Shittu, a bus driver identified as Wasiu Olaitan and another unidentified man were transferred to the hospital yesterday morning.<br /> <br /> Mrs. Shittu, almost covered in bandages at the female ward, said the explosion occurred in less than a minute.<br /> <br /> According to her, the fire caught up with her while she was trying to run away from the scene.<br /> <br /> She said: “I am a civil servant and had closed from work. I was in a commercial bus on my way home when the incident occurred. I cannot really say what happened but we heard a loud noise and people were running.<br /> <br /> “I got burnt while I was running away from the bus. I thank God that I am alive. Five of us were brought here this morning (yesterday). I do not know where the other four are.”<br /> <br /> A husband to one of the victims revealed that he counted 67 burnt vehicles at the scene of the incident on Thursday night, adding that he trekked from Berger to the Trauma Centre in search of his family member.<br /> <br /> He said: “It is not true that only 54 vehicles got burnt. I counted 67 vehicles. I trekked from Berger to the Trauma Centre and back.<br /> <br /> “Yesterday was a terrible day but I thank God my wife survived it. I pray for God to comfort those who lost loved ones in the unfortunate disaster.<br /> <br /> “I cannot say the number of people that died, to be honest. Most of the bodies were dismembered. Others have been burnt and turned into small objects. Those escalation equipment were carrying up charred bodies, so, how can they be counted?<br /> <br /> Olaitan’s wife, Fadiat, said her husband sustained minor burns on the arm, adding that she was yet to see him.<br /> <br /> Another relative, who declined her identity, revealed that she was not allowed access to her husband.<br /> <br /> She said: “We have been in this hospital since morning that they brought them here, but the workers would not allow us in. They were brought in from the Trauma Centre.<br /> <br /> “My husband was seriously burnt. At the Trauma Centre, they took care of them before bringing them here. You can see the number of people outside. We have not been allowed in.”<br /> <br /> Similarly, a family took to social media to search for their three-year-old son, Eyitayo, yet to be found after the inferno.<br /> <br /> According to the poster, Mrs. Funmi Balogun, Eyitayo was in the car with his twin sister, Eyitoke, their mother and driver when the incident occurred.<br /> <br /> Balogun, who posted the boy’s picture on her Instagram page, fabrics_n_more, wrote: “He was involved in the unfortunate tanker accident with his mother, twin sister and the driver at Otedola Bridge yesterday (Thursday) evening.<br /> <br /> “They were a few cars away from the tanker when the explosion occurred. Terrorists in whatever form are enemies of humanity and no effort must be spared to protect our people. I will always support anything that is meant to enhance security in our region,” he said.<br /> <br /> Buhari also lauded the proposal for a security summit between members of ECOWAS and countries in Economic Community of Central African States.<br /> <br /> The security summit is billed to hold on July 30, this year.<br /> <br /> Gnassingbe said he was happy to be in Katsina, the homestead of the President, and thanked his host for his help in calming the political situation in Togo.<br /> <br /> He also briefed Buhari on Mali elections, billed for next month, saying ECOWAS would ensure that everything went smoothly.<br /> <br /> Answering a question on what the sub-regional body could do to help Nigeria with the problem of clashes between cattle herders and farmers, the ECOWAS Chairman said the problem was not peculiar to Nigeria but was common to a number of countries, including his own.<br /> <br /> “It is not a religious or ethnic problem and must not be misconceived as such. We will discuss the matter, and try to find a solution,” Gnassingbe said.<br /> <br /> He also condoled with President Buhari on the fire disaster caused by a fallen petrol tanker in Lagos Thursday.</div>

He urged the court also to order that anything ceased from the defendant should be returned to him.<br /> <br /> The prosecuting counsel, Mr Sylvanus Tahir, urged the court to go ahead and convict Mamu because the prosecution had made a prima facie case against the defendant. He added that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. “Our argument is copiously stated in our final written address and we urged the court to carefully go through it” he submitted.<br /> <br /> He urged the court to go ahead and convict the defendant.<br /> <br /> Justice Salisu while delivering his judgement said the prosecution failed to comply with constitutional provisions for obtaining the statement of the witness.<br /> <br /> The judge also said the prosecution witness confirmed in court that the commission knew the location of a vital Ima Abubakar and still failed to bring the witness to court.<br /> <br /> He said:”the prosecution failed to prove it’s case against the defendant and consequently discharged him of the four-count brought against the accused”
