Nigerian Starboy, Wizkid, on Friday night, experienced a mild drama at his concert in Abuja.
 
Wizkid ‘’Live in concert’ held on Friday night at Transcorp Hilton.
 
While on stage, an excited fan held one of his legs and refused to let go.
 
This caused a mild drama as fans started screaming and bodyguards struggled to release Wizkid’s leg to avoid a fall on stage.

However, it was unsuccessful for some minutes as Wizkid fell on stage while the fan held onto the leg.
 
Recall that Wizkid made record in London after he sold out tickets for his concert at the o2 Arena in London.
 
One of his tracks from his ‘Made in Lagos’ album ‘Essence’ has continued to make waves across the world as celebrities dance and vibe to it.
 
It is not new that 2021 was a great year for Wizkid as his international audience grew massively, his songs topped billboard charts, he recorded massive streams on his album and endorsements.

President Muhammadu Buhari is set to sign the amended National Health Insurance Scheme (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill into law, according to the Chairman, the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe.
 
Oloriegbe said this on Friday in Abuja during the Universal Health Coverage summit adding that the House of Representatives will pass the bill in the coming week.
 
He said, “The president is willing to sign it into law now. The House of Representatives will pass it next week. It will then be transmitted to President Buhari for assent in the next few days. The president is committed to getting the NHIS bill passed.”
 
The senator, who represents Kwara Central Senatorial district, noted that it would be the first time a bill will make health insurance mandatory for all Nigerians, with the hopes of achieving universal health coverage in Nigeria.

Noting that it was the responsibility of all tiers of government to fund the health sector, as stipulated in the National Health Act, Oloriegbe, however, lamented the failure of state and local governments in committing to healthcare.
 
“We have federal, state and local governments. If you look at what is happening now, the sub-national levels are not committing as much as necessary to health and the national health act stated the responsibility of each level of government with the federal government having the responsibility for tertiary care,” he noted.

The proprietor of a hospital in Yola, who was abducted last Sunday, has been released.
 
It was learnt on Saturday morning that Bala, the proprietor and Medical Director of Aisha Hospital, Ngurore, Yola, regained his freedom Friday evening.
 
The immediate past Medical Director of government-owned Specialist Hospital, Yola, rejoined his family hale and hearty.
 
A member of the family who did not wish to be named, also objected to request for details surrounding the medical doctor’s release.

The family source would not say whether or not ransom was paid to secure the doctor’s freedom but admitted that the abductors had earlier reached to the family in demand for a ransom.
 
He would not say how much was demanded.
 
Bala was abducted last Sunday, December 12, by gunmen who stormed the Aisha Hospital in Ngurore, a satellite community on the Yola-Numan highway, and took him away.
 
The Adamawa State Police Command which had at that time spoken of moves to rescue the medical proprietor, said Saturday morning that he had indeed been released.
 
The state Police spokesman, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, said, “Yes, I can confirm to you that the medical doctor has been freed.”

Shatu Garko, an 18-year-old girl, who hails from Kano State, has emerged the 44th Miss Nigeria
 
Shatu Garko was a Hijab model before she was crowned Miss Nigeria.
 
A top of 37 participants from different states of Nigeria were selected in the early stage of the pageant competition.
 
From that, another top 18 contestants for the 44th Miss Nigeria were chosen to compete on the last day which was Friday night.

Garko made it to the top eight as a participant from the North West region, alongside other seven participants.
 
Garko, who loves riding horses, wants to prove that religion is not a barrier to pursuing one’s dream.

The Coalition of Civil Society for Good Governance (CCSGG), has opined that allowing the South to produce the President in 2023 will end an anomaly in leadership and rewrite many wrongs in the country.
 
The coalition appealed to politicians to consider the need for the South to produce the President in 2023.
 
The Convener of CCSGG, Jacob Okpanachi, and the Secretary, Dahiru Al-Mustapha, in a statement noted that in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise to deliver good governance, he should sign the Electoral Amendment Bill into law.
 
The CSOs, under the hashtag #TheNextPresident, appealed to Nigerians on the need for power rotation to southern Nigeria in line with the spirit of nationalism and unity, as exemplified in the leadership pattern in the previous processes in the democratic journey so far.

According to the statement, “There is insecurity and socio-economic and political instability are currently being witnessed in Nigeria; it is imperative that we create a fulcrum for ending every anomaly in leadership by inter alia engaging in the leadership recruitment process but first a template for success must be laid which includes this campaign. The effect of what will happen in 2023 should be done now.”
 
It explained that #TheNextPresident as a project had seen the need for power rotation to the South.
 
They reiterated that it was sacrosanct for the political parties, opinion molders, youths and student-based groups and all stakeholders to get involved in the power shift campaign.

Islamic human rights organisation, Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has returned the blames of the current killings, kidnapping and destruction going on the Northern part of Nigeria to former President, Goodluck Jonathan.
 
The North is boiling with anger over insecurity, with some groups already starting to protest, while the average citizen up north is fuming with rage.
 
MURIC identified Jonathan’s administration as the real culprits of insecurity in the North and berated politicians who stole money meant for the purchase of arms for the armed forces.
 
The group warned the North against misplacement of their anger, pointing out that the bastardisation of the almajiri system had not helped.

The group, in a statement distributed to the media on Saturday, signed by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, insisted that the current security situation is not the fault of the current administration but that of past leaders.
 
“Today was born from the wombs of yesterday,” the statement began.
 
“Little or no effort was made to nip the problem in the bud. The remote causes are the bastardisation of the almajiri system and the proliferation of drug addiction.
 
“In particular, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan displayed high level aparthy to the problem of Boko Haram insurgency. A glaring example was his self-imposed state of stupor in the first three weeks after the Chibok girls were abducted.
 
“Jonathan was in power at that time but his attitude to the Boko Haram insurgency was lukewarm.
 
“Things were so bad that Nigerian soldiers used to turn their heels at the approach of the insurgents.
 
“Had he acted swiftly, the insurgents would have been apprehended but he dilly-dallied and refused to give the order to pursue the abductors until it was too late.
 
“The way and manner the $2.1 billion arms money was shared among party loyalists under the watch of the former president left much to be desired. Had that money been utilized for what it was intended, insecurity in the North would have been brought under control at an early stage,” it said.
 
MURIC also blamed the Bukola Saraki-led 8th National Assembly for virtually holding the hands of President Muhammadu Buhari and ensuring that there was motion without movement in the term of his government.
 
According to MURIC, the Saraki-led assembly had one aim which was only to frustrate the Buhari administration and ensure that it failed in all its efforts.
 
The Islamic rights group said the region must know who is responsible for the current insecurity so they can apportion their blames appropriately, pointing to those, according to it, who failed to take prompt action in the heydays of Boko Haram.
 
MURIC warned the North against blaming Buhari by protesting, adding that the region could destroy itself.

Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle has said he received with a heavy heart the news of the demise of his former Director of Campaign and close Associate, Alhaji Jamilu Aliyu (Zannan Gusau).
 
According to a press statement signed by the Governor’s Special Adviser on media, Comrade Zailani Bappa, the news of his demise and that of his mother in-law was indeed a great test of the will from the Almighty Allah.
 
“In a very sober mood, the Governor submits the twin losses to the Almighty Allah and acknowledged that all souls must test the pain of death, just as all the living must experience the pain of losing their loved ones,” the statement added.
 
Governor Matawalle extolled the remarkable virtues of late Jamilu Zannah, whom he described as a trusted and reliable confidant and a very serious and committed person in pusuit of good leadership for the people.

“I have always held the late Zannah in high esteem and have given him my confidence for his brilliance, honesty commitment and loyalty.

A tricyclist, who was later identified as Kayode, has been crushed to death in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
 
It was gathered that the middle-aged man was crushed to death on Thursday during a road accident involving an articulated truck and three commercial tricycles.
 
The incident occurred around Airport junction, Alakia, Ibadan.
 
Sources disclosed that the truck ran over the head of the victim, after it rammed into three of the commercial tricycles where they were parked.

The accident was due to excess speed by the truck driver.
 
Angry youths who stormed the scene of the incident captured the driver of the truck when he was trying to escape.
 
The driver was later handed over to the police from Egbeda Divisional Police Headquarters located at Gbagi area of Ibadan.
 
The damaged tricycles were also towed to the police station.
 
However, all efforts made by our correspondent to get reactions from both the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the State’s Police Command proved abortive since Thursday.

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel has revealed his side’s major problem following their Premier League 1-1 draw with Everton on Thursday.
 
Chelsea drew with Everton at Stamford Bridge, following second-half goals from Mason Mount and Jarrad Branthwaite.
 
Tuchel’s side are now in the third position on the Premier League table with three points behind second-place Liverpool and four points behind leaders Man City after 17 games.
 
But Tuchel is now saying that Chelsea’s major problem so far this season is that too many of his players are out of action due to injury.

“I’m concerned we have too many players out [through injury],” Tuchel said at his post-match press conference.
 
“This at the moment is the problem, one of the key problems.

Chelsea’s next game is against Wolves on Sunday.

Senator Ademola Adeleke has described the new leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winning team that will return the party to power in the forthcoming elections in the country.
 
Senator Adeleke who is one of the PDP gubernatorial aspirants in the 2022 Osun Gubernatorial Election made this known on Thursday while submitting his nomination and expression of interest form at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
 
During a closed-door meeting with leaders of the party which included the National Deputy Chairman South, Ambassador Taofeeq Arapaja, Adeleke disclosed that his aspiration to contest the gubernatorial election again in 2022 is to conclude the struggle he began in 2018 and to ensure victory in the rescue mission agenda.
 
The Ede-born senator who acknowledged that Osun was in bad shape revealed that he has a four point agenda to resuscitate the state and place it on the path of real growth, adding that the government was operating without the drive to shape the state and achieve innovation.

He also agreed that the Iyorchia Ayu-led leadership of the party will mark a new dawn in the struggle for a PDP led government that will fulfil the many yearnings and aspiration of Nigerians.

While expressing appreciation for the massive support he got from the people in 2018, he assured them that help is on the way.

Former Governor of Abia State and Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu has called for rescheduling of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention slated for February, 2022.
 
He allayed fears of a collapse and an unmitigated injury the party could sustain if the National Chairman of Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee of the APC, Governor Mai Mala Buni, goes ahead with the convention in February.
 
In a letter he wrote on Thursday in Abuja which he addressed to President Muhammadu Buhari and the National leadership of the APC, Kalu identified three challenges that must be urgently addressed before the convention, which are: “Election of National Working Committee (NWC); Party crisis at State levels; and the 2023 presidential zoning.
 
To this, he suggested that the 2023 presidential primary of APC and election of National Working Committee (NWC) should hold the same time with the presidential primary election.

Kalu in the letter titled: “Urgent appeal for postponement of APC National Convention,” warned that holding the convention in February without resolving pockets of disagreements that emanated from the Congresses of the party may lead to implosion.
 
The letter reads in part: “It is with a sense of commitment and unflinching loyalty to our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) that I write to you, the content of this letter regarding the National Convention of our party slated for February, 2022.
 
He lauded the achievement of Mai Mala Buni for managing the party up to this time, but warned that crisis in some State chapters of the party remains threatening if there were not addressed immediately.
 
“However, it is pertinent to note that, some states are embroiled in crisis with multiple factions.
 
“These factions are not new to our politics, especially since the return of democracy in 1999.
 
“However, it is important to put into consideration, the consequences of these factions during and after elections.
 
Kalu recalled how factional crisis aided opposition party in Rivers and Zamfara governorship election in 2019, even as the party couldn’t field Senatorial candidates in Cross River State, thereby made the Peoples Democratic Party to have a field day.
 
He further explained that the party cannot boast to have decided on presidential zoning yet, a situation he said could lead to party implosion, stating that the issue must be addressed before proceeding on the national convention in order to save the party.

Former Super Eagles head coach, Gernot Rohr has insisted that he rejected advice from officials of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, when he was in charge of the Nigeria national team.
 
The NFF sacked Rohr from his role last Sunday and appointed former Eagles captain, Augustine Eguavoen, on interim basis pending the appointment of a permanent boss.
 
Speaking with ESPN, Rohr revealed he didn’t follow some of the suggestions of the officials because he wanted to make players’ selection with his technical staff and not with people from outside the team.
 
“I know Nigerians are passionate about football and everyone has their own favorites and I understand that everybody wants to see some players and we discussed it,” Rohr said.

The Kaduna Police Commissioner, CP Mudassiru Abdullahi has ordered full scale investigation into the murder of a member of the Kaduna State House of Assembly, Hon. Rilwanu Aminu Gadaga.
 
Gadaga, representing Giwa West Constituency, was killed by bandits when the motor he was traveling in, alongside other road users, rammed into bandits stationed along Kaduna-Zaria road
 
Muhammed Jalige, Kaduna Police Command Public Relations Officer, in a statement on Thursday, sent to newsmen, noted with grief the killing of the lawmaker.
 
He added that, “the Kaduna Police Command is in receipt of an unfortunate incident of culpable homicide through Divisional Police Officer, Saye Division, Zaria that on 15th December, 2021, at about 0900hrs, information received from a good samaritan from Zura village has it that an unidentified motionless human body was seen lying in the bush.”

He said immediately it was discovered, the reports were sent to the appropriate authorities for urgent action.
 
According to him, the DPO on getting the information, immediately mobilised and led a team of policemen to the scene where a close and physical observation of the corpse was carried out and all necessary photographs taken.
 
The statement added that signs of violent injuries were noticed all over the lifeless body.
 
He said the body was thereafter evacuated to Hajiya Gambo Sawaba Hospital for autopsy.
 
He said preliminary investigations revealed the identity of the deceased as one Hon. Rilwanu Aminu Gadaga, a member of Kaduna State House of Assembly representing Giwa West Constituency
 
The Command said that it was saddened by the tragic loss of lives, just as the commissioner of Police had directed for a thorough investigation to be carried out to unravel the identities of the person or group of persons who carried out the dastardly act.
 
The statement condoled with the immediate family of the deceased, the government and the people of Kaduna State over the irreparable loss.

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Thursday leave Abuja for Istanbul, Turkey, to attend the third Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit, hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Republic of Turkey.
 
According to the organisers, the theme of the Summit is ‘‘Enhanced Partnership for Common Development and Prosperity’’ and the agenda includes reviewing the cooperation between African countries and Turkey since the last Summit in 2014.
 
This was disclosed in a statement by Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Publicity, on Thursday morning.
 
The third Turkey-Africa Partnership Summit is coming on the heels of President Erdogan’s recent State visit to Nigeria during which several agreements in the fields of energy, defence industry, mining and hydrocarbons were signed to expand existing bilateral ties.

The Turkish leader had during the visit to Nigeria, affirmed his commitment to immediately expand the volume of trade between the two countries to 5 billion dollars and the Nigerian delegation will seize the opportunity of the gathering in Istanbul to enhance cooperation with other partners for more trade and investment opportunities in the country.
 
It is expected that the Summit would provide guidelines and direction for cooperation with African countries for the next five years.
 
President Buhari will be accompanied on the trip by his wife, Aisha Buhari; the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Defence, Maj-Gen. Bashir Magashi (Rtd); FCT, Mohammed Bello; Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire; Agriculture, Mohammed Abubakar; Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo; the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (Rtd); and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar.
 
The President is expected back in Abuja on Sunday, December 19.

Rising from its meeting held in Damaturu, Yobe State, the North-East Governors Forum have commended the Federal Government for its various initiatives towards stabilising the North-East subregion, noting that there is significant improvement in the security situation in the sub-region as evident by the mass surrendering of Boko Haram fighters.
 
This is contained in the communique, signed by the chairman of the Forum, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, who is the Borno State Governor, issued at the end of the meeting and made available to newsmen in Bauchi.
 
The governors, however, made a case for the establishment of a sustainable programme for the handling of repentant terrorists.
 
While expressing worry over kidnapping and farmer/herder clashes, among others, in the sub-region, the forum resolved to undertake necessary measures to curtail the menace.

The governors called on the Federal Government and the National Assembly to make adequate budgetary provision in the 2022 appropriation bill for the implementation of the Mambilla hydroelectric project, which they stated they deliberated extensively on.
 
They then expressed concerns over the non-commissioning of the Dadin Kowa and Kashimbila hydro-power plants, noting that this was stalling development of the sub-region. They, however, appealed to the Federal Government to increase its investments in the sub-region to guarantee peace and economic prosperity.
 
Though they acknowledged that the 2022 budget is in its final stages, the governors called on the National Assembly to look critically at the North-East sub-region with a view to ensuring that adequate budgetary provisions are made for all major capital projects in the sub-region.
 
The communique stated that the governors deliberated on a presentation by the Minister of Power on planned and on-going power projects in the North East, which highlighted the challenges of steady power supply to the sub-region.
 
They noted with dismay the near one year lack of electricity in Maiduguri and its environs and urged the Federal Government to urgently find a lasting solution.
 
According to the communique, in attendance at the meeting were the Governors of Borno, Gombe and Yobe, while the Governors of Adamawa, Bauchi and Taraba States were represented by their deputies.

No fewer than seven people lost their lives while 19 others were injured in a lone accident that occurred on Wednesday morning around the Badeku area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
 
The accident, which involved a truck with registration number, OYO: NRK 312 YR, occurred at about 7.00 a.m at Badeku Junction on Ibadan-Ile-Ife Road.
 
A witness, Mr Tunde Lateef, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the scene of the accident that the truck, carrying dozens of labourers, was speeding toward Ikire Road when another truck, coming out of Badeku Village, crossed the express road.
 
Lateef said that an attempt made by the driver of the crashed truck to avoid collision caused it to somersault, thus flinging the people on board into different directions.

NAN reports that men of the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) who arrived at the scene of the accident assisted in carrying the victims to hospitals.
 
The FRSC Sector Commander in Oyo State, Mrs Unce Chukwurah, confirmed the accident in a telephone interview with NAN.
 
Chukwurah said the truck involved in the accident carried 26 labourers that were going for construction in the area.
 
“It was a lone accident. The yellow tipper vehicle was carrying 26 people, 19 of them injured, while seven died in the accident.
 
“The injured has been taken to ASBON Hospital at Gbagi area for treatment, while remains of the seven dead had been collected by their relatives for burial,” she said.
 
The sector commander attributed the possible cause of the accident to speeding violation.

The Department of State Services, DSS, has raised an alarm over plots by criminal elements to destabilize Nigeria during the Yuletide season.
 
DSS said operators of worship centres, palaces, markets, schools, and public buildings should be watchful during the yuletide season.
 
Peter Afunaya, the spokesman of the secret police, disclosed this while addressing journalists in Abuja.
 
Afunaya warned persons plotting evil to destabilise Nigeria to desist or be dealt with.

He said these evil elements are capable of kidnapping, assassination, hijacking, and robbery.
 
According to Afunaya: “These individuals are susceptible to kidnapping, hijack, assassinations, armed robbery and political manipulations.
 
“The service, therefore, warns that those who are involved in this evil plot of destabilising the country should desist from such acts.
 
“It is common knowledge that criminal elements will heighten their inglorious activities before, during and after the festive periods.
 
“Therefore, religious and community leaders, hoteliers and operators of markets, parks, recreational and relaxation centres are to be on the alert and watch strange movements and activities around their facilities.
 
“Such facilities include places of worship, palaces, markets, schools and other public buildings.”
 
He charged operators of the places listed to promptly isolate and report suspected rogues to security agencies.

President Muhammadu Buhari has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Ogun State, as well as the Royal family on the passing of the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Adegboyega Dosunmu Amororo II.
 
It was reported on Tuesday that Oba Dosunmu joined his ancestors after a brief illness.
 
The late Olowu was installed in 2005 following the demise of the late Oba Adisa Odeleye in 2003.
 
Owu is the homestead of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, where he was installed as the Balogun.

The President joined the Ogun State Council of Obas and Nigerian film producers in mourning the demise of the respected First Class traditional ruler and the producer of TV soap, the Village Headmaster, recognized as the longest-running Nigerian TV series for over 20 years.
 
This was disclosed in a statement by Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina, on Wednesday.
 
Buhari believed that the Olowu would be fondly remembered for his love and tireless work to champion the interests and well-being of his community.
 
The President noted that theater practitioners in Nigeria and around the world, as well as students of drama, will remember Oba Dosunmu’s brilliant works on stage and screen, which have been preserved for the delight and education of the upcoming generation.
 
Buhari prayed that the memory of the late Oba will be a blessing to his family, friends and community as his soul returns to his Creator.

Prof. Mohammed Bugaje, the Executive Secretary of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), has observed that industries and other employers of labour are key drivers for development.
 
Speaking to journalists in Kaduna, Prof. Bugaje explained that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in partnership with German International Development Agency (GIDA), under its Skills for Youth Employment Programme (SYEP), organized the 7th industry stakeholder consultation on skills development which was held on 2nd December, 2021, in Abuja.
 
He said that over 130 industry players, development partners, sectors skills councils ( SSCs), awarding bodies, training providers, MDAs, organized private sector and the media were among those that attended the consultation.
 
He further explained, “The objective of the consultation was to create the much needed awareness on 21 century skills training system, Nigerian Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) and the needed for the involvement of industry in development, delivery and quality assurance of the skills eco-system.”

The Executive Secretary of NBTE explained that the board was all out to change the narratives from the certification of polytechnics to the vocational system of education where the country can have much needed man power with the intention to move Nigeria and the people forward.
 
He stated that only three polytechnics were doing the vocational training system of education, while the rest are giving out certificate of education.
 
Bugaje stated that Germany as a country, has a system of education with 80% of its schools on vocational education system.

The Osun State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two persons, Ogunmokun Joshua and Amos Danjos for alleged conspiracy, illegal encroachment and illegal mining.
 
The arrests, according to Daniel Adigun, the Public Relations Officer of the State command, was in line with the mandate of the corps, which is to track down all illegal mining operations in the country.
 
The duo, 24 and 26 years of age, respectively, who were tracked on Sunday, December 12, 2021 to Iperindo, Atakunmosa East Local Government Area of the State by personnel of the corps, were arrested in the act of carrying out illegal mining activities.

Manchester City star, Riyad Mahrez, on Tuesday, joined Arsenal legend, Nwankwo Kanu, and Crystal Palace’s Cheikhou Kouyate, to become only the third African player to make 100 plus appearances for two different clubs in the Premier League.
 
Mahrez achieved the feat after participating in Man City’s Premier League 7-0 thrashing of Leeds United on Tuesday night.
 
During his time at Leicester City, the Algerian international played 139 times for the Foxes before joining Pep Guardiola’s side.
 
However, Kanu became the first African to accomplish this milestone, having reached a century of caps for Arsenal and Portsmouth, respectively.

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said he will not turn down the calls of those asking him to contest for president in 2023.
 
Tinubu stated this after a meeting with leaders of the Northern Alliance Committee in Abuja on Tuesday.
 
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the former Governor of Lagos said he would, however, make consultations before officially announcing a decision on the matter.
 
“I’m not going to turn them down but I will still effectively and widely consult, particularly brainstorm with my friends and find a date to come out openly to tell Nigerians.

Pensioners in Ondo State, under the aegis of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), have cried out over backlog of unpaid gratuities, as well as outstanding monthly pension by the State government.
 
While appealing to Akeredolu to clear the outstanding payments, the pensioners stated that most of them who retired since 2011 from the local government service were yet to be paid their gratuity, while those within the state civil service had not been paid since 2013.
 
The pensioners disclosed this during the commemoration of this year’s Pensioners’ Day held on Tuesday at the Union’s Secretariat, Akure, the State capital.
 
According to the NUP State Chairman, Hon. Johnson Osunyemi, the government should expedite action in the payment of eight months arrears of the monthly pensions of the State and over over six months for Local Governments’ pensioners.

Osunyemi, however, commended Akeredolu for being the first governor in the Southwest to approve the implementation of the 33 percent pension increase in 2020.
 
He canvassed for online verification for pensioners across the state.
 
“We wish to profer a more holistic approach to future verification of pensioners by adopting online verification where our aged pensioners can be verified from the comfort of their homes without being subjected to the discomfort of the present system of verification,” he said.
 
While assuring the pensioners of his administration’s commitment at ensuring their optimal welfare, Governor Akeredolu disclosed that three months arrears of the pension would be paid before the end of 2021.
 
According to Akeredolu, who was represented by the Head of Service, Pastor John Adeyemo, the COVID-19 pandemic and other subsequent variants affected the finances of the State, which he said had adverse effect on regular and full payment of salaries and pension.

The Finance and Appropriation committee of Zamfara State House of Assembly has declared zero allocation for the State School of Nursing and College of Health Science Tsafe pending clarification on the non-remittance of their Internally Generated Revenue, IGR.
 
This was disclosed by the chairman of the committee, Hon. Shamsu Basko Mafara during the budget defense for the Ministry of Health.
 
He said that it would not be fair for the state government to be disbursing funds to the two institutions while they are not remitting anything to the state government coffers from the IGR they are generating.
 
According to him, the committee would fix a time for the officials of the two institutions to come and clarify how they have been utilizing their IGR before money is released to them in the 2022 budget.

The Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello, has urged members of the communities in the Mashegun Local Government Area of the state to be vigilant and observant of the activities in their neighbourhood.
 
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mary Noel-Berje, in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, said he made the visit following the recent activities of bandits in the communities.
 
Governor Bello explained that the visit was aimed at obtaining first-hand information on the incidents to enable the government to restrategize and plan on how to prevent reoccurrence.
 
“I decided to come and see what has happened, get first-hand information so that we can plan how to stop such things from happening going forward. It is unfortunate that people are being attacked while saying their prayers early in the morning,” he said.

At Tugan Ba’ari, Adogon Malam and Mazakuka communities where the Governor visited respectively and interacted with the residents, his message was the same.
 
He empathised with them on the situation and stressed the need for them to make peace and be on the watch out for people with questionable character amongst them.
 
Governor Bello further urged them to work out modalities on how to fish out bad eggs among them so as to assist the security agents in curtailing the situation, pointing out that there cannot be a successful attack without an insider.
 
“I understand that it is the work of bandits probably with the connivance of some locals. So I call on the community members to pay attention to their neighbours and to be very observant of what is going on around them,” he said.
 
According to the statement, “The Governor then assured the people that government will not rest on its oars in evolving measures that would prevent reoccurrence, expressing optimism that the commission of inquiry he had earlier set up would do a thorough job.
 
“The Council Chairman of Mashegu, Alh. Alhassan Isah Mazakuka disclosed that 17 people were killed, 19 kidnapped and 8 injured at Ba’ari while praying in the mosque last week.
 
“Alh. Isah Mazakuka said some of the victims who sustained injury in the attack are receiving treatment at the General Hospital Kontagora while some were referred to Kebbi State for treatment.
 
“Also speaking, the Ward Head of Tunga Ba’ari Alh. Garba Aliyu described the incident as horrible, explaining that their men and women were taken away by bandits.
 
“He called on the government to empower the vigilantes more, reiterating that insecurity in the area is becoming persistent.”
 
Mazakuka, Adogon Malam, Kulho among other communities in Mashegu LGA have been experiencing series of banditry attacks that have led to the death of many. Just last week, scores were feared dead, some kidnapped and some others injured at Tugan Baari while they were performing the morning prayers in the Mosque.

The Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has revealed that one of its students, Oke Ademiju Victor, a final year student of Political Science, was involved in a savage attack by suspected cultists in Osogbo, Saturday night.
 
Confirming the development on Monday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji disclosed that the University had received a report of the attack on Oke in the late hours of Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Akede, Osun lepo area of Osogbo.
 
According to Adesoji, “The University noticed that Oke Ademiju Victor was absent for his final paper in the afternoon and decided to contact his parents.
 
“It was later discovered that he was attacked by unknown cultists in the early hours of Saturday.”

The university spokesperson reported that some of the residents of the area where the incident occurred explained that Oke was shouting that he will not join their cult group while he was continually being hit with a machete and stones.
 
He also stated that after the physical beating, there was an attempt to set him ablaze which was partially carried out before he was eventually rescued.
 
He revealed that the institution has been following up with the parents of the victim and it was confirmed that Oke was rushed to the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital for treatment and later referred to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.
 
“The University security unit is currently working with the Osun Command of the Nigerian Police to ensure the culprits are exposed and brought to book.
 
“We hereby implore everyone to be calm and continue with their normal activities as the management of the University is committed and will continue to remain committed to the safety of the lives and properties of its stakeholders especially the students,” he said.
 
Meanwhile, the Osun Police Command Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, said police personnel were on the trail of the perpetrators.
 
“Investigation has commenced into the matter. Members of a cult attacked the victim. They doused him with petrol and set him ablaze.
 
“Our men are already on the trail of the perpetrators. The victim is believed to be a member of a rival group. He did not die. He was rushed to a hospital,” he stated.
 
There were several media reports on Monday of the attack on a rival cult member in Osogbo.
 
Reports had it that he was macheted severally and when the weapons had no effect on him, petrol was poured in him and he was set ablaze.

The national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, has said that the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Senator George Akume, will soon return to the main opposition party.
 
The PDP Chairman said that Akume, who is the leader of All Progressives Congress, APC, in the North-Central zone would return to the PDP and would be received as a prodigal son.
 
The PDP boss said this in Gboko when he received a member of the House of Representatives, John Dyeh, who defected from the APC to the PDP.
 
“Your lost son, George Akume, is coming back to the PDP. I’m saying this thing based on what I know,” Ayu said.

He said that he had earlier prophesied that Akume would join the APC and it came to pass, and added that the minister was on his way back to the PDP.
 
He told the party faithful in the area not to reject Akume when he finally returns but make sure they rehabilitate because, according to him, the Minister is not thinking straight where he is now.
 
“He is a lost son, a prodigal son. Only rehabilitate him and make sure he thinks properly,” Ayu said.
 
Ayu who received the serving lawmaker who represents Gboko/Tarka Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives said he (Dyeh) had seen the light and promised that all the defectors would be treated fairly.
 
The leader of the defectors, Dyeh, said he decided to move from the APC to the PDP because the national chairman is his uncle.

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Electoral Bill, 2021, into law.
 
Idayat Hassan, the CDD Director, in a statement, observed that signing the Electoral Bill 2021 into law would represent the most significant legacy of his presidency.
 
He eexplained that the proposals in the Electoral Bill 2021 would improve the nation’s electoral system at all levels.
 
The statement noted, “The next critical step that must be taken is for the assenting into law the Electoral Bill 2021, particularly as we head to two off-cycle elections in Ekiti and Osun states in 2022 and the 2023 general election.”

It added that the direct primary method for candidate selection proposed in the bill would improve internal party democracy by strengthening party membership.
 
According to the statement, the poor internal processes were largely responsible for the weakness of political parties in Nigeria and had an adverse effect on the country’s governance system.
 
The Centre explained that with the direct primary election, every registered member of the party would directly determine their candidate.
 
The CDD believed that it would reduce the floodgates of litigation that usually trailed the idea of consensus or imposition of candidates by political godfathers and party owners.

The federal government has said it was working round the clock to ensure the United Kingdom, UK reverses its ongoing ban on travelers from Nigeria in the wake of Omicron variant.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation and Chairman Presidential Steering Committee on CoVID-19,Boss Mustapha, speaking, Monday, said: “The PSC is working with mandate ministries to address the issues surrounding the restriction imposed by some countries on travellers from Nigeria on account of the omicron variant.”
 Government said it has initiated diplomatic steps to make the United Kingdom and other countries reverse restrictions imposed on travellers from Nigeria on account of the omicron variant.
 
It warned that while each country was free to put in place measures to protect its citizens, Nigeria should not be singled out.
 
Mustapha said the government was exploring diplomatic measures in resolving the issues surrounding the travel ban based on existing relationships.
 
Hear him:“While each country is entitled to put in place measures to protect its citizens, Nigeria has similar responsibilities.
 
“However, based on existing relationships, Nigeria has initiated diplomatic steps to make these countries reverse their course.
 
“This is ongoing in the interest of all parties concerned and we expect that positive results would emerge within the next one week.
 
“The PSC also evaluated the developments on the relationship between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and we are pleased to inform you that the position of the Federal Government is in line with established International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Protocols and the spirit of the BASA signed with the UAE.
 
“Our sovereignty remains paramount and mutual respects shall be our guiding principle in as much as it should be in the best interest of Nigeria.
“The PSC will at its next regular briefing on Monday, December 20, 2021 brief you fully on developments,” he said.
 
The SGF noted that with the emergence of the new COVID-19 Omicron variant, now spreading very fast globally, Nigeria has continued to study developments and has deployed science and data to measure the risks to our citizens especially, the dangers of importation.
 
He assured Nigerians that PSC has escalated all surveillance and control measures around our country.

 Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers, on Monday, sacked the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Princewill Chike, for allegedly hosting preliminary session of Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) without approval.<a name='more' id="more"></a>
Wike announced the commissioner’s sack when the MDCN Chairman, Prof. Abba Hassan, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Port Harcourt.
 
The governor described the unilateral decision of the commissioner to host MDCN without the consent of the state government as ‘most embarrassing’.
He said that the state government did not request to host the preliminary session of the council.
 
Wike stressed that the commissioner erred by unilaterally scheduling hosting of MDCN for the same time government was inaugurating and flagging off of projects.
 
“Frankly speaking, I have never seen an embarrassment like this in my life. Everybody knows that it is not my nature to bring people and not attend to them. So, whoever has done this must suffer for it,” he said.
 
Wike, however, said that MDCN’s request for the establishment of tertiary hospital in each of their senatorial districts would not be realisable due to paucity of funds.
 
“You have talked about siting tertiary hospital in each of the senatorial districts; this is not possible.
 
”That is why in Nigeria we have a problem. When you go for your budget, you put all kinds of projects. You know it cannot work. Where will you get the money to site the hospital in each of the senatorial districts?” he queried.
 
The governor said in order to improve citizens’ access to quality healthcare service delivery, his administration had embarked on construction of some zonal hospitals in Bori, Degema, Etche, Ahoada and Omoku.
He further said his government had also invested huge amount of resources on promotion of medical education in the state.
 
”This is particularly with the establishment of Rivers State University College of Medical Sciences and the annual award of scholarship to 130 indigenes studying medicine at PAMO University of Medical Sciences,” he said.
 
The governor called for reduction of the money accruing to the Federal Government from the Federation Account to enable states to have more resources to drive their developments.
 
Earlier, Hassan said that they were in the state for the 9th preliminary session of the council and commended Wike for his positive attitude toward healthcare and medical delivery services in the state.
 
He was particular about the huge investment in Rivers State University College of Medical Science and the construction of the world-class Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.
 
The MDCN chairman urged governors to consider investing in tertiary hospitals in each of the senatorial districts to increase the number of hospitals available for the training of house officers and check medical tourism.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State, Kenneth Imasuagbon, has appealed to Nigerian leaders to identify with those they govern especially under the current harsh economic reality.
 
Imasuagbon stated this on Sunday during his annual rice distribution exercise to the people in Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State and his home town, Ewohimi in Esan South East Local Government Area.
 
He said, “Leaders must begin to feel the suffering of the people and identify with them. That is the only way we can start helping them. If you eat and your neighbour can’t, then there is trouble. Look at the way people are struggling to grab a 10kg bag of rice. I will do everything to fight hunger.
 
“I’m calling on all Nigerians, Edo sons and daughters, to join me in the struggle to defeat hunger in Edo state. We need to feed our children. We just have to conquer hunger.

“Let us learn from the late Captain Hosa Okunbo, who gave it to everyone. He shared with all that came in contact with him. You don’t need to be super-rich to share with the needy. Our leaders must see now that our people are hungry.”
 
The philanthropist donated food items and cash to Christ family Orphanage, Otoukwe, Agenebode and also urged all well-meaning Nigerians to share with the less privileged, the needy and the downtrodden.

Jehovah’s Witness celebrated the religious group’s 100 years presence in Nigeria on Sunday since its presence in 1921.
 
The celebratory centenary event was a three–hour programme titled, ‘History-100 Years of Courage! Jehovah’s Witness in Nigeria’.
 
The programme featured the organisation’s early beginnings in the country from 1921 broken into segments; “1921-1946: Small Beginnings; 1947-1972: Standing Firm Under Test; 1973-1979: Period of Increase and 1998-2021: Courageous Stand in Modern Times.”
 
During the event, the efforts of the earliest missionaries in Nigeria, Claud Brown and Willaim ‘Bible’ Brown, in spreading the message of the Bible Students, as Jehovah’s Witnesses were then called, in the streets of Lagos.

The celebration also featured a virtual Exhibition Tour, which included the construction of what is referred to as the first Kingdom Hall in the country, situated in Ilesha, in former Western Nigeria, now Osun State in 1935.
 
The virtual tour included the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ first Branch Office in Nigerian Branch, situated in Shomolu, Lagos in 1956 and the organisation’s first convention in Benin City in 1958.
 
The centenary celebration did not leave out landmark achievements by the organisation which include the steady growth of the faith in Nigeria, the translation of the Bible and other Bible-based publications in many Nigerian languages, the commencement of four-colour prints since 1990 and the 2021 Report which puts the total number of Witnesses in Nigeria at over 400,000.
 
To draw a curtain on the event, a Bible-based discourse titled, ‘Maintain Your Courage into the New World’ was presented to attendees.

Manchester United boss, Ralf Rangnick has delivered his verdicts on Cristiano Ronaldo after the forward scored the only goal of the match as the Red Devils defeated Norwich City 1-0 over the weekend.
 
Rangnick also said that he has no imminent plans to rest Ronaldo as Manchester United near the halfway point of the 2021/22 Premier League season.
 
Ronaldo has so far scored 13 goals in all competition for Man United since he rejoined the club from Juventus.
 
The Portugal captain was not at his optimum level against Norwich, but Rangnick said he was pleased with the player’s mentality.

“I don’t know,” Rangnick said at his post-match press conference when asked about the prospect of resting Ronaldo.
 
“So far, I am happy with his body language, his input on the team.

Man United’s next game is against Brentford on Tuesday.
