The N10 million he referred to was donated when the Offa market got burnt and it was made in Ilorin, not Offa.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “When Dr Saraki visited Offa to commiserate with the community in the aftermath of the robbery, he did not donate a dime! I challenge him to prove me wrong,’’  he said.<br /> <br /> The minister reiterated his earlier warning against playing politics with the unfortunate incident.<br /> <br /> He alleged that Saraki had said in a radio interview that he donated the N10 million when he visited Offa to commiserate with the people in the aftermath of the robbery.<br /> <br /> Mohammed added that the senate president in the interview also said that the N10 million he donated was more than the N7 million that was stolen from the robbed banks’ vaults.<br /> <br /> “The overly aggressive and crude response by Dr Saraki to that warning has shown that he is not ready to heed the admonition, hence the need to re-state it, and to condemn any attempt to denominate human lives in Naira and Kobo,” he said.<br /> <br /> The minister said that in the wake of his warning, the apparently embarrassing radio interview was hurriedly edited to remove all references to the Offa robbery and then re-aired across Kwara state.<br /> <br /> Mohammed further said: “Instead of stopping at that, which in itself constitutes an acceptance of wrong-doing, Dr Saraki went ahead to hurl insults at me even when I have been largely restrained in issuing my earlier warning.<br /> <br /> “Had I not been restrained, I would have gone ahead to divulge what actually transpired. But with politics in the air, the truth becomes the first casualty.<br /> <br /> “Realising that he goofed, Dr Saraki apparently caused the radio interview in question to be edited to remove the donation reference, and then re-aired.<br /> <br /> “Is it not an irony that the people who engaged in this egregious act of dishonesty are the same ones calling others names?”<br /> <br /> He said he would continue to steer the debate on the political developments in Kwara to issues rather than an exchange of personal insults which he had always been averse to.<br /> <br /> “The people of Kwara, who are bone-tired of the long years of ‘bolekaja’ governance in the state, are all saying in one voice, ‘O to ge’ (enough is enough).<br /> <br /> “They will soon have the opportunity to express their frustration with their votes,” the minister said. </div>

He thanked me for making arrangement for him to get back to Sokoto.<br /> <br /> “Shagari should not be mourned. He should be celebrated as a true, honest and sincere leader who was a nationalist to the core. Nigeria has lost a gem.”<br /> <br /> Obasanjo further recalled how late Shagari expressed surprise when the mantle of leadership was handed to him in 1979 by a military head of state which happened to be himself.<br /> <br /> “He was a true friend indeed not a fair weather friend. His life was an embodiment of something to celebrate. We have learnt a lot from him. If we learn the lessons of forgiveness which he taught us, Nigeria will be a good country”, said the former President.<br /> <br /> Responding, Bala Shagari thanked the former President for the condolence visit. For instance, he signed into law the National Minimum Wage Act of 1981 that provided for a new national minimum wage of N125 which was equivalent to about $200.<br /> <br /> “It took more than deft move and political will to execute this. It took the milk of human kindness in Alhaji Shehu Usman Shagari and his deep appreciation of the dignity of labour and value of the human life to do this.<br /> <br /> “To truly appreciate the value of what Shagari did for workers way back then without a bloody fight, let us pause and reflect on the value of the present national minimum wage of N18,000 which is $49; and the new national minimum wage of N30,000 (equivalent to $82) which is due since 2016.<br /> <br /> “One of his other legacies was a national housing scheme, a component of which was the building of low-cost houses for workers across the then 19 states of the federation<br /> <br /> “In light of his contributions to national development, peace in the land, and welfare of workers, Shagari remains a national hero, patriot, and a distinguished gentleman.<br /> <br /> “He never for a moment allowed the allure of office to becloud his judgement, especially about the objective conditions of workers. The good he has done shall therefore not be interred with him but shall live after him.<br /> <br /> “It is reason why we join others in mourning this great patriot and nationalist.<br /> <br /> “We do hope his death will offer us all an opportunity to reflect not only on our mortality, but our life in office, actions or decisions taken in power.<br /> <br /> “Fare thee well, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari. To live in the hearts of those who love you, is not to die. Your deeds shall continue to live after you.”</div>

He was dethroned by a coup d’etat that brought in Buhari to power as military Head of State, three months after he (Shagari) was sworn in for a second term.<br /> <br /> He said the late president did not leave any will beside the directive that he should be buried at his home town, Shagari.<br /> <br /> According to Bala, the directive was strictly observed and implemented as his remains were buried at Shagari town, on Saturday.<br /> <br /> He acknowledged that the Sultan had offered that the late president should be buried at Hubbare, where Shehu Usman Dan Fodio was laid to rest.<br /> “We acknowledged it but late Shagari had told us that he should be buried in Shagari town and even indicated a specific location, so we have to comply with his will,” he added.<br /> <br /> He explained that the late president’s absence at functions was due to his ill-health, saying that was the reason he stayed in Sokoto and Shagari town before he died.<br /> Earlier, President Buhari condoled with the wives and children of late Shagari at the deceased’s residence on Sama Road in Sokoto.<br /> <br /> During the visit, Prof. Shehu Galadanci led the prayers for late Shagari.<br /> <br /> He also prayed to God to change the mindset of those spreading hate and disunity among citizens as well as those individuals or organisations working against the laudable and pro-human policies and programmes of the Buhari administration.<br /> <br /> Buhari was accompanied by Governors Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, Sen. Her parents told her to go and steal children for them to sell in order to raise money for her examination. Being familiar with the two children at her maternal home, Umuezeala Ama, in Ehime Mbano LGA of Imo State, she stole the children.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “The girl and her father left for Mbano, but the father stopped at the Amaraku Market square, waiting for his daughter to hand over the children, who he had instructed her to steal. The 15-year-old met the children playing, stole them and joined her father at the Amaraku Market and both left with the children to Ogbaku. The children were sold to one Mama Joy at the rate of N800,000. Mama Joy, with one Favour Okoh, resold one of the children to one Juliet Ogbor for N750,000.”<br /> <br /> Galadanchi said the police immediately commenced investigation and was able to recover one of the children, Chiemerem, on December 15th at Agbor in Delta State.

But if anyone has an alternative method, let him bring it to the table,” he said.<br /> <br /> Ortom urged youths not to take the law into their hands but report to security agencies if any cattle encroached on farm lands in any part of the state.<br /> <br /> The governor told newsmen that he would officially visit the rice farm tomorrow to assess the damage done to it.

Buhari orders release of $877 million arms to fight Boko Haram

Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai said the military had not received such cash from the government to boost the anti-Boko Haram and other campaigns.<br /> <br /> However, according to a relaible source $496,374,470 was released from the Excess Crude Account (ECA) for the purchase of Super Tucano aircraft from the United States. The payment has been made.<br /> <br /> Besides, $380,513,958.71 was released (as first tranche) for the procurement of critical equipment for the Army, the Navy and the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), a source said.<br /> <br /> These releases along with other deductions may have contributed to the depletion of the ECA from $3.502 billion in January to $631 million in December 2018.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> Finance Minister Mrs. Zainab Ahmed attributed the “rapid” depletion of the ECA to payments made to the military as approved by the National Assembly.<br /> <br /> A source in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) confirmed to newsmen that $876m had since been released to the military. But the source did not give the exact date when the payout was made.<br /> <br /> The source also disclosed that the ECA had an opening balance of $3.502 billion in January 2018, made up of $2.451 billion as balance brought forward on the January 1, 2018 and additional inflows of $1.052 billion.<br /> <br /> In the course of the year, the source said that $1.761 billion was withdrawn from the ECA as refund to state governments for Paris Club deductions made in the past from the state governments accounts. Besides, $0.233 million was withdrawn and paid to state governments as grants to fund their Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) obligations.<br /> <br /> These deductions brought the ECA down to over $600 million balance as at the last Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting in Abuja.<br /> <br /> Gen Buratai did not categorically say how much the military was expecting from the government but said that the government had not released funds to the military to effectively prosecute the war against insurgents across the country.<br /> <br /> A member of the Senate Committee on Defence said it was not aware that the fund had been released.<br /> <br /> He spoke of how some members of the committee made inquiries, but were not told that part of the $1 billion had been released.<br /> <br /> He said: “We are actually in the dark as far as the issue is concerned. It is an important issue. When the Chief of Army Staff said they had not received the money as approved by the National Assembly, some of us made enquiries.<br /> <br /> “May be because of the security nature of the fund, the authorities may not want details of the releases to be known. We will definitely follow up, although it may not be for public consumption because of the security implications.”<br /> <br /> “We may have to invite relevant authorities to brief us,” the senator, who did not want his identity disclosed, told one of our reporters.<br /> <br /> The House of Representatives is investigating the whereabouts of the $1 billion appropriated for the procurement of arms and equipment in the fight against Boko Haram in the Northeast and general insecurity.<br /> <br /> President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the release of $1 billion for the procurement of security equipment.

The Force will not tolerate attack on his personnel by any individual no matter how highly placed. The law must take its course.”<br /> <br /> Three days after the siege, Senator Melaye took to his Twitter handle @dino_melaye on Sunday to decry the continuous siege to his residence.<br /> <br /> The senator, who stated in the tweet that he would not run away from the country, also alleged that the police cut off his light and water supply.<br /> <br /> The tweet reads: “To God alone be the glory. I shall not die but live. Nigeria is my only country; I cannot and will not run away because of frivolous lies and charges. We all own this country and justice must reign. I will never be afraid of him who can only kill and injure the flesh and not the spirit.<br /> <br /> “Nigerians can drive or walk through my street to confirm Moshood Jimoh’s lies. Water and light cut off for 3days now. These guys are so dishonourable. God help Nigeria. We shall overcome.”<br /> <br /> Moshood, however, denied cutting off water and power supply into the senator’s house.<br /> <br /> “We are neither plumbers nor electricians, how do we cut off water and light? He claimed not to be at home, how did he know that they cut water and light? We did not cut the water, nor light because we are neither electricians nor plumbers. We are only there to enforce the law, so let him surrender himself.<br /> <br /> The PDP decried what it cried police lockdown on Melaye’s residence.<br /> <br /> Ologbondiyan said in the statement: “The continued siege, which has been widely condemned as unwarranted and provocative, shows that the police under President Buhari, has become an instrument of oppression to subjugate dissenting voices ahead of the 2019 general election.<br /> <br />

<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="250" data-original-width="412" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoJzeeX7IOFWcyCElYMpR4AQgslwjEuOltKqxbzjn97yDiQJGZp6Q05gOF1Z4lInaNFC0W2bMHfDREJjzvzZPB-w-9NOwOdiEApD9KOltdD2t0qTPrdoqBduUiARoSeieK8a8hQfW4tpeq/s400/Buhari-atiku+bb.png" width="400" /></div> <br /> The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) and the Atiku Media Office clashed yesterday over an allegation that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Atiku Abubakar was planning to bring into the country illicit funds.<br /> <br /> In a statement, the BMO alleged the former vice president Atiku Abubakar plans to flood the country with what it described as illicit funds in the run-up to the 2019 elections.<br /> <br /> Its Chairman, Niyi Akinsiju, and Secretary, Cassidy Madueke, urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigerian Customs Service NCS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to watch out for illegal funds’ transfer across the borders.<br /> <br /> But Atiku’s Media Adviser Paul Ibe dismissed the allegation as “another infantile outburst that tells more about the accuser than the accused.”<br /> <br /> Ibe said the PDP standard bearer has no looted funds anywhere.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> In its statement, the BMO accused the former vice of being desperate to bring money stashed abroad into the country with a view to outspending the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).<br /> <br /> It reads: “We have it on good authority that the PDP and its Presidential candidate are making strenuous efforts to bring in public funds stashed abroad including those from recent sales of assets in Angola which were acquired with illicit funds.<br /> <br /> “We also know that the former vice president has made promissory transaction commitments on a number of strategic national assets including the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and a percentage holding in the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) to a foreign syndicate.<br /> <br /> “All these are out of desperation and as a result of his inability to raise funds from governors elected on PDP platform, many of whom are themselves locked in stiff battles for their seats.”<br /> <br /> According to Akinsiju and Madueke, the decision to bring in funds by the PDP candidate followed stringent measures put in place by the CBN and EFCC to ensure sanity in the banking sector.<br /> <br /> It alleged that said top officials of the last PDP government used some third generation banks to funnel public funds to party officials in all states of the federation before the last election.<br /> <br /> The statement added: “It is clear to Atiku Abubakar and PDP elements that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has put in place a system that has made it difficult for the type of situation in 2015 where a former minister could warehouse $115,000,000 (One hundred and fifteen million dollars) which was then shared among party officials to influence electoral officials.<br /> <br /> “They also know that even the EFCC is very much on the alert at local airports as seen in the manner its operatives have twice in recent times intercepted undeclared sums of money running into millions of dollars.<br /> <br /> “So these opposition elements are now working out a more crooked way of bringing in money through the borders in order to circumvent the system before and during the February 2019 elections”.<br /> <br /> The group urged all relevant agencies to double their efforts to enforce provisions of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act, 2011 (as amended).<br /> <br /> Reacting, Atiku’s spokesman said the former vice president has a reputation of blocking the transfer of illicit funds.<br /> <br /> Ibe said: “For the avoidance of doubt, history shows that rather than smuggle in looted cash, Waziri Atiku Abubakar has a record of preventing looted funds from being smuggled into Nigeria.<br /> <br /> In 1984, it was Atiku Abubakar, as head of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Command of the Nigerian Customs and Excise Department, that stopped the ADC of the then Military Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, from smuggling in 53 suitcases of looted money into the country.<br /> <br /> “Young Nigerians and millennials, who may not be aware of this incident, will do well to Google it. Only the guilty are afraid.”<br /> <br /> Ibe quoted what Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai said of the controversial suitcases, adding that Atiku had survived all the traps set for him because he had nothing to hide.<br /> <br /> He said: “Atiku Abubakar’s plane was searched, his accounts have been perused and his businesses have been thoroughly investigated with a fine tooth and nothing remotely corrupt or illegal has been found.<br /> <br /> “And while they are at it, we urge them to tell Nigerians those behind Etisalat and Keystone Bank and how they suddenly possessed such wealth overnight.”<br /> <br /> The Buhari campaign office had defended the President’s integrity and accused the opposition party of deliberately planning to drag the name of President Buhari in the mud.
