The trucks are no longer on the road. What you see on the road, the day you don’t see them again, Nigeria is in recession.<br /> <br /> ” We need to understand what the road is meant for. The road is not meant for Keke Marwa and Okada. Apapa road is meant for all kinds of vehicles and mainly trucks – articulated vehicles.<br /> <br /> “The tankers came back visibly when the Ijegun Jetty was shut down by Lagos State Government and the DPR around the middle of October. They were all diverted back to Apapa to load. That was for a national emergency.”<br /> <br /> According to him, the current surge is only on one side of Apapa and the surge is early in the morning.<br /> <br /> He said that the team had directed tankers not to come out before 10:00 a.m.<br /> <br /> The committee vice chairman said the gridlock used to extend up to Maryland before the task was inaugurated, but now the situation had changed.<br /> <br /> He said the access road to the ports had also been made easier for tankers and trucks.<br /> <br /> He said that many of the tankers on roads were going mainly to Marine Bridge to load to the Northeast and other northern parts of Nigeria.<br /> <br /> Opeifa said the problems in Apapa would soon be solved with the movement of petroleum products by the pipeline up to Ilorin, Kwara State, massive road rehabilitation as well as extension of rail line to the port.<br /> <br /> He said that most of the areas in Apapa belonged to the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) in the past, but the privatisation had brought lot of encroachment.<br /> <br /> Opeifa described the notion that articulated vehicles should maintain a single lane into the port so as not to disturb other road users as a wrong management principle.<br /> <br /> He said that tankers had right the right to be on the road like other road users at the same time because of the economic and social purposes, but they should not obstruct other motorists.<br /> <br /> The committee vice-chairman said that if the depots were working and there were no breakdowns, there would not be any reason for articulated vehicles to stay on roads.<br /> <br /> “From May 22 till date, I can tell you the tankers are off the roads, but when we have Christmas, what do you expect? Roads are congested, activities increase, fuel distribution increases and containers coming to the port increase.<br /> <br /> “The port is now congested to the tune of over 125 per cent because we have closed down the borders.<br /> <br /> “So, all the ships meant for Nigeria that were going to Benin have been diverted back to our port. Terminals must be more efficient,” he said.<br /> <br /> Opeifa said that tankers queued because they could not get to their depots, while trucks queued behind tankers because they could not get to their terminals.<br /> <br /> According to him, trucks are coming to port en mass and nobody is controlling the way they come in.<br /> <br /> He said there was a need for appropriate regulators before the ports were concession.<br /> <br /> On trailer parks, Opeifa said that all depots had tanker parks as well as loading bays, but not all were performing optimally.<br /> <br /> He said that his team identified about 48 possible trailer parks to keep up to 3,500 trailers to only come to the port whenever they were called, but the attack on Lilypond was a setback.<br /> <br /> “The trucks need to do that in a way that they don’t affect others and we did that for three good months until that attack on Lilypond and the corruption-fight-back started.<br /> <br /> “NPA should take care of managing the trucks within Lilypond, Shippers Council should take care of its economic regulation, the trucking companies, customs and everybody should behave and obey the laid down regulations.<br /> <br /> “We have demonstrated this in June July, August, September up to the middle of October that we can have truck-free roads. No tankers spend one day on Lagos roads now, but hours. We have delivered on our mandate.<br /> <br /> “How did the trucks come back on the road? The reason is that Lilypond, the epic centre of the call-up system was attacked and it is yet to come back to action.”<br /> <br /> Opeifa denied allegations that extortion was fuelling disorderliness and lawlessness by truckers,  but said that unhealthy competition to access the ports encouraged the development.<br /> <br /> He said that all corruption would end whenever the Federal Government’s long, medium and short term solutions to Apapa situation were effective.<br /> <br /> Opeifa said that in the restoration plan, the Lagos State Government was charged to repair some roads, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to work on pipelines, while the NPA would carry out some reforms like release of Lilypond and electronic call-up system. But most of our brothers there are saying no, they are not coming back and that nothing will happen to them.<br /> <br /> “We are again calling on our brothers to leave the North and come back to the South-East. But if they say no, ISIS, Boko Haram and herdsmen will kill them. They should come back home to remain alive with their children. We are tired of these killings and we want our people to come back home.”<br /> <br /> He added that MASSOB would not stand and watch Igbo people being killed by terrorists in the North, adding that the South-East was economically viable for Igbo people and others to do business.<br /> <br /> Okereafor, however, noted that MASSOB was not afraid of the terrorists should they decide to come to the South-East.<br /> <br /> He said, “On the killings of Christians in the North by ISIS, ISWAP and Boko Haram, we are prepared for the terrorists. MASSOB is saying that we are prepared to defend our land.<br /> <br /> “We cannot watch while they push us to the wall, kill us and kill our children. He said the Matawalle government is determined to sanitise the payroll.<br /> <br /> The commissioner also said he confronted the incumbent deputy governor of the state, Mr Mahdi Ali-Gusau, over allegations on social media that the he was collecting double salary.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> According to him, the deputy governor denied the speculations and submitted self for further scrutiny to prove his innocence.<br /> <br /> The commissioner, however, said on further investigations, it was discovered that “some directors of finance were involved in the racket of inflating the state’s workers monthly wage bill and pocketing the excess”.<br /> <br /> He also revealed that the scam was more at the state Health Service Management Board (HSMB) where investigations showed that the suspended directors of finance were fraudulently selling out fake offers of employment at the cost of N250,000 to innocent job seekers.<br /> <br /> He added that the state government was so far losing more than N216 million monthly to the racketeers.<br /> <br /> Ali-Gusau lamented that “if utilised, the state government can employ an additional 8,000 persons and pay them salary” comfortably.<br /> <br /> The absurdity of the 119 year-old worker was not the only one raised by Garba.<br /> He also said the government will drag a total of 108 civil servants to court for allegedly receiving double salary in different ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) in the state.<br /> <br /> Garba said that the affected workers were discovered during the ongoing investigation of workers’ salary issues by the state’s ministry of finance.<br /> <br /> He said that the exercise, under the leadership of Governor Bello Matawalle, was not to witch-hunt anybody, but to ensure sanity in the civil service payroll in the state.<br /> <br /> “The affected workers found collecting more than one salary at different MDAs were among the 4,972 civil servants who were suspended from receiving salary for the month of December 2019 as a result of various irregularities.<br /> <br /> “We discovered these irregularities from the payroll of November 2019 salary in the state.<br /> <br /> “We have suspended the affected workers from collecting salary until we conclude the investigation,” Garba said.<br /> <br /> He said the 108 workers, who were collecting double salary, would be handed over to the state’s ministry of justice for prosecution.<br /> <br /> “We also found 109 workers whose official names are different from the names of their salary accounts.<br /> <br /> “We discovered irregularities from 1,640 workers whose account numbers are not found in the CBN server,” he said.<br /> <br /> “We also suspended the salary of 1,548 workers receiving salary under micro-finance banks because of various irregularities.<br /> <br /> “We have directed them to their MDAs for proper clearance,” he added.<br /> <br /> According to the commissioner, some of the MDAs involved in the salary irregularities in the state are Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, Talata-Mafara, Arabic and Female Education Boards, Establishment and Hospital Service Management Board.<br /> <br /> “We have suspended the directors of finance of all the affected MDAs,” he explained.<br /> <br /> He urged the workers in the state to be patient with the state over any inconvenience which the verification exercise might have caused.<br /> <br /> Garba said anyone who needed clarification on the matter should visit the state ministry of finance in Gusau.

When you steal the pulpit, the next manager or preacher has nothing to preach from and that’s how you hear about the indebtedness of the NDDC and all that because at any point people just go there, amass wealth, either for electoral purposes or for personal use and the place is abandoned.<br /> <br /> “The poverty in the area, the ecological problems, the environmental hazards, the disconnect between the NDDC and the people of the region, all these things collectively, your heart will be bleed when you see what is going on. Billions, like N200, N300 billions are spent on useless programmes of desilting of drainages or doing programmes for widows and widowers, okada riders and all that.<br /> <br /> “Then, you’ll see that a place where they could have intervened like roads connecting two regions, like the Sapele/Warri Road, Benin Road or places like Bayelsa where in Elebele a bridge collapsed and then, the people have no drinking water. Then, go to Ogoniland, because of soil pollution, there’s no drinking water and nobody thought of a creative way of providing clean and potable water for the people.<br /> <br /> “People are suffering from cancer and other diseases and no good hospital that one could say was built by the NDDC, equipped for the purposes of a modern day 21st century hospital that people could go and have succor.”<br /> <br /> “Collectively, those things were the things that made me, when I was a governor, to ignore NDDC. But during a shootout, a soldier was killed while one of the robbers was also gunned down.”<br /> <br /> The FCT Commissioner of Police, Bala Ciroma, confirmed the incident to newsmen.<br /> <br /> He stated, “It is a foiled bank robbery. We stopped the robbers from raiding the bank. Four men were arrested while a suspect was killed. Investigation has commenced to determine how they entered the bank.”<br /> <br /> A huge crowd thronged the scene as the news of the robbery spread, causing serious traffic gridlock on the narrow road that leads into the community.<br /> <br /> The residents hailed the security personnel as the police took away the suspects in their patrol vans.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended the security operatives for arriving at the scene on time to foil the attack.<br /> <br /> Atiku, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 general elections, called for improved security of the country and its people next year.<br /> <br /> “I am proud of the proactiveness of the Nigerian Army and Police in foiling the bank robbery in Abuja,” he said in a tweet.<br /> <br /> The former Vice President added, “It is my hope that this will be the face of a reinvigorated security in the new year,” he tweeted.

Police sources said Victor named other suspects to include Uche Ogoke, Monday Kingsley, Pius Lucky and Sunday Goodluck.<br /> <br /> The source added that all other suspects were arrested at different locations while items such as a cut-to-size locally-made gun, gun powder and weeds suspected to be marijuana were recovered from the suspects.<br /> <br /> One of the suspects identified as Emeka, however, escaped.<br /> <br /> A family source said it was the policemen at Shaibu’s residence that arrested Victor after they scaled the fence.<br /> <br /> A source in the police, however, said Victor led them to his house where other suspects were arrested.<br /> <br /> When contacted, Shaibu confirmed the incident, saying the suspects were already helping the police with their investigation.<br /> <br /> It was learnt that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation.<br /> <br /> But another account of the incident revealed that the suspect arrested was a hoodlum who scaled the fence and landed in the premises of the old house of the deputy governor.<br /> <br /> It was learnt that two groups of boys in the community had a fight early in the day and were separated.<br /> <br /> But apparently not done with the fight, one of the groups returned to launch an attack on their opponents on Friday evening.<br /> <br /> It was gathered that the opponents fought back and in the process, one of the fleeing attackers, in a bid to escape, scaled the fence and landed on the premises of the deputy governor’s family house with a local gun allegedly in his possession.<br /> <br /> Victor was said to have been arrested by a policeman on duty and that he named four other members with whom they carried out the attack on their opponents.<br /> <br /> When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Lawal Jimeta, said he was out of the state for an official duty.<br /> <br /> Also, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Chidi Nwabuzor, also said he was not aware of the incident and that he was first hearing about it from our correspondent.

She said she believed something was wrong with the pool that must have made swimming difficult for them at that point in time.’<br /> <br /> The operator of the Costa del Sol hotel, however, stated that her claims were “directly at odds with the findings of the police report” into the tragedy.<br /> <br /> According to The Guardia Civil in Spain, its investigation points to the incident being an accident caused by the victims’ lack of swimming expertise when in the deep zone of the pool.<br /> <br /> The statement read in part, “Our family is utterly heartbroken by the events of last Tuesday, but we are comforted and strengthened by our strong faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.<br /> <br /> “We are deeply shocked, saddened and struggling to come to terms with their passing. They all brought joy and love to the world and to everyone that crossed their path. We love them all dearly, will always remember them in our hearts and miss them greatly.”<br /> <br /> It added, “The whole family, all five of us went to the pool together and were all present when the incident occurred. The children were not left unattended.<br /> <br /> “We followed the instructions displayed by the poolside at all times. The children went into the pool using the steps but found themselves dragged into the middle, which was deeper and called for help when they could not get out.<br /> <br /> “My daughter did not fall into the water. My husband went in via the steps trying to help the two struggling while I ran to the nearby apartments shouting for help to assist my husband. He too was held in custody despite bail granted him by the Federal High Court in Abuja in September and November this year.<br /> <br /> EFCC is prosecuting Dasuki before Justice Hussein Baba-Yusuf of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama, Abuja, on two separate sets of charges of diversion of funds earmarked for the purchase of arms needed to fight Boko Haram in the North-East.<br /> <br /> In one of the cases, Dasuki is being tried alongside a former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa; his son, Sagir Bafarawa; a former Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda; and Sagir’s firm, Dalhatu Investment, as defendants.<br /> <br /> They are charged, among others, with diverting about N13bn said to have been meant for the purchase of arms.<br /> <br /> In the second charge of 19 counts, Dasuki and Aminu Baba-Kusa and Baba-Kusa’s two firms – Acacia Holdings Ltd and Reliance Referral Hospital Limited – are accused of diverting N32bn meant for the purchase of arms.<br /> <br /> Dasuki is also being prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation on charges of money laundering and illegal possession of firearms before Justice Ahmed Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Abuja.<br /> <br /> But the cases have not made any tangible progress since 2015 largely due to the detention of the ex-NSA in disobedience to the bail granted him by various courts.<br /> <br /> Compounding the problem are are the letters sent by Dasuki to both the FCT High Court and the Federal High Court in Abuja, in November 2018, indicating that he would no longer attend proceedings until the bail granted him by different courts were obeyed by the Federal Government.<br /> <br /> Following the letter and the subsequent refusal by Dasuki to be brought to court by DSS operatives, the AGF office, through the prosecuting counsel, Dipo Okpeseyi (SAN), applied to the Federal High Court in Abuja to allow the ex-NSA’s trial on charges of illegal possession of firearms to proceed in his absence.<br /> <br /> On November 19, 2018, Justice Mohammed granted the order for the trial to proceed with or without Dasuki’s presence in court.<br /> <br /> The EFCC, through its lead counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), had filed a similar application and another one seeking to separate Dasuki’s trial from that of his co-defendants, in respect one of the cases it instituted against the ex-NSA.<br /> <br /> It had indicated its intention to file a similar application in the other case.<br /> <br /> On December 11, 2019, Justice Baba-Yusuf adjourned the hearing of the applications till February 13, 2020, in one of the cases.<br /> <br /> But since the EFCC prosecuting counsel had only informed the judge of the plan to file the applications in the second case, no date has been fixed for a hearing in the said case.<br /> <br /> “With his (Dasuki’s) release from custody, it means we have to withdraw the applications and request that the trials resume with full force,” a top EFCC official told our correspondent.<br /> <br /> On Wednesday, barely 24 hours after he was released from the four years long detention, Dasuki in an interview with the Hausa Service of the Voice of America, monitored in Abuja, said with his release, he was ready to face trial.<br /> <br /> Asked to comment to respond to Dasuki’s assertion and the plan by the EFCC to adopt a new approach to the cases, the commission’s spokesperson, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, responded in a text message, stating, “Wait for the next adjourned date. The tradition has since been maintained.<br /> <br /> “Before now, this same Governor had invited all the members of the State House of Assembly and directed them to commence the process of amending the law to change the name of the State University which the last administration renamed after my late father, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki. He then followed up on this act of vengeance by initiating a bill to rename the University and expunge the name of the late Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki. Now, he has decided to also revoke the titles of the landed property which belongs to the late politician. May be, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq thinks his will be the last administration in Kwara State but definitely, this is self delusion.<br /> <a name='more' id="more"></a><br /> <br /> “The property had been rightfully allocated to my late father under the name of one of his companies, Asa Investment Limited, since the 1980s and contrary to the claim of the Governor, the land was properly allocated and a Right of Occupancy title issued on it. It should be noted that the excuse given by Abdulrazaq in his revocation order holds no water since it is clear that this is the height of his vengeance against my father, Dr. Abubakar Olusola Saraki and I.<br /> <br /> “Till today, many Kwarans have been wondering what problem the Governor has with the late Oloye Abubakar Olusola Saraki or what the late politician did to offend him. It is surprising that of all vacant plots of land in strategic places across Ilorin township, the one that Abdulrahman found useful for his vengeful plan is the one owned by late Dr. Saraki. It is beyond comprehension why a Governor would set as his main agenda the objective of undermining and waging a war of attrition against a man who is no longer around.<br /> <br /> “This action is clearly a manifestation of vengeance and it shows that this Governor is not out to serve any public purpose or pursue any development agenda. In his narrow-mindedness, he believes his victory at the polls is an empowerment, entitlement and enablement to settle scores, provoke and pursue inter-family rivalry. Those who voted for the party in power in Kwara State and Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq obviously did not vote for the man to enable him wage war against Dr. Olusola Saraki and his legacies. They expected development and fulfillment of promises.<br /> <br /> “If the Governor believes people are not taking stock of his misguided and deceptive actions and that because he is in power, he could do whatever he likes, he must be a joker. Also, this war against the Sarakis will not successfully veil his unpreparedness for governance and divert people’s attention from the glaring lack of visionary, clear-cut plan to deliver on his empty promises to the people. He definitely cannot get away with all the atrocities he has been committing.<br /> <br /> “Since the outcome of the elections in March, despite the fact that there are clear grounds to challenge the results in court, I have decided to demonstrate maturity, statemanship and sportsmanship. I have chosen not to make comment on the policies, programmes and actions of the administration in Kwara State or that of its head. Also, I deliberately stayed away from the State to avoid creating any distraction for the administration. My decision is borne out of a genuine restraint to enable the administration settle down and fulfill its numerous promises to the people of our state.<br /> <br /> “However, seven months down the line, Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq has shown that its cardinal Programme is to wage war against my late father and I. He has demonstrated that his only competence and astuteness is in the area of viciously assailing the late Oloye Saraki and I. Definitely, he is a man with no sense of history. Enough is enough. Now, he has crossed the line.<br /> <br /> “Perhaps, I should let it be known that if Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq thinks he is taking all these actions to get at me, he is only deceiving himself. There is no basis for competition between us. Our paths cannot cross because the status that he is struggling to attain, Almighty Allah has given it to me many years before now. I became Governor 16 years before him and served out my constitutional limit of eight years. Within the period, I was Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum. I have moved on to serve in the federal legislature and by the grace of God, I headed the National Assembly as the number three man in the country. No matter, how well he tried to rewrite history, it is on record that I left Kwara State a lot better than I met it. In fact, the University that he is struggling to rename was established by my administration as just one out of many legacies we left behind. This Governor needs a lot more efforts, years, Intelligence and resources to attain the level Allah has taken me, not to talk of my late father, Dr. Olusola Abubakar Saraki, the Senate Leader in the Second Republic. As Governor, I used the position to serve the people and during the period I did not dishonour his own father or anybody’s father for that matter.<br /> <br /> “Just as I did after the election, my advise to Gov. Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq that he should devote his time and energy to providing good governance and genuine development of the state.<br /> <br /> “It is well known to the Governor that I fear nobody, except Almighty Allah, the ultimate owner of all powers. With all his subterranean and open moves against my family, person and property, I remain unmoved. However, his open antagonism against my late father and his legacies is unwarranted and will not be tolerated. He has definitely gone beyond bounds as he cannot be allowed to ride roughshod on the deceased. In this war against my late father, he will not win.<br /> <br /> “This Governor has shown that he is not a man who wants peace, co-operation and development. He believes that a constant attack on my family and I is all that he needs to win the hearts of Kwara people. The need to provide good governance is secondary to him.<br /> <br /> “However, it should be made clear to Abdulrazaq and his administration that their attack on my late father cannot erase the legacies of Oloye. No evil design, negative plot or propaganda can successfully rewrite the history of Kwara State. This plot against my late father will not stand. And I will like to make it clear that we will contest this petty, malicious, dubious and bias action of a parochial, vicious and vindictive administration through all legal means. We are sure this is not an action taken in public interest. Rather, it is done in pursuit of a selfish and devious objective”, Saraki stated.
