President Muhammadu Buhari has demanded justice for a Nigerian who was killed in Ireland.
Buhari, through the Chairman and CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa also condemned the killing of Mr George Nkencho.
It was gathered that Nkencho, a 27- year old Nigerian resident in Ireland, was killed on Wednesday, 30th December.
Dabiri-Erewa in a statement issued on her behalf by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NIDCOM Head of Media and Public Relations, described the death of the young Nigerian by a Police officer as callous and wicked.

Dabiri-Erewa who said she was disturbed by the killing of the young Nigerian, called for a full, thorough and fair investigation into the matter.
She appealed to the Nigerian community in Ireland to exercise patience and await the outcome of investigations into the unfortunate incident.
Dabiri-Erewa condoled with the family of Nkencho and the Nigerian community in Ireland over the killing of the deceased.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s father Stanley confirmed plans on Thursday to seek French citizenship as the free movement of Britons in the EU comes to an end under the Brexit pact delivered by his son.
Speaking to France’s RTL radio in French, Stanley Johnson said, “It’s not a question of becoming French. If I understand correctly I am French! My mother was born in France, her mother was completely French as was her grandfather.
“For me, it’s a question of obtaining what I already have and I am very happy about that,” the 80-year-old added.
The father of the politician, who ended Britain’s 47-year-old membership of the EU, was among the first civil servants appointed to Brussels after Britain joined the EU in 1973.

He worked for the European Commission and served as a member of the European Parliament.
He initially campaigned against leaving the EU before changing his mind a year after Britain voted to leave the union in 2016.
“I will always be European, that’s for sure,” he told RTL.
“You can’t tell the English: you’re not European. Europe is more than the single market, it’s more than the European Union.”
“That said, to have a link like that with the EU is important,” he said, apparently referring to an EU passport.
His plans to seek a French passport had already been revealed by his daughter Rachel in a book published in March.
She wrote that her grandmother was born in Versailles and said that if her father received French citizenship she too would like to become French.
The UK’s tortuous departure from the European Union takes full effect at 2300 GMT when an 11-month transition post-Brexit transition period comes to an end.

Churches in Cross River State have rescheduled their cross-over programs following the new COVID-19 restrictions in the state.
Our correspondent reports that some churches commenced their cross-over services by 11am as against the usual vigil programs of the past.
Leaders of the churches had boasted that their cross over programs would not be shelved because of the curfew in the state and as such rescheduled to suit governments directives.
Following the second wave of COVID-19 and increased criminal activities in Cross River, the state government had ordered the enforcement of a 10pm to 6am curfew.

In a statement made available to newsmen, the Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI) said, “Due to a very recent Government Directives (and we are obedient people ) we have adjusted our Passover service to start 2pm & end by 7.30pm Thursday 31st Dec.,2020”.
The statement called on members to readjust their programs and attend accordingly, “Members, leaders, workers, heads of depts, transport unit, committees etc. Please take note” the statement added.

‌China has confirmed its first case of a new coronavirus variant that was recently detected in Britain, health officials said.
The new strain, which experts say potentially spreads faster than the original variant, has prompted travel restrictions on the UK by more than 50 countries — including China, where the coronavirus first emerged late last year.
The first patient in China with the new variant is a 23-year-old woman from Shanghai who arrived from Britain on December 14, the Chinese Centre for Disease Control said in a research note published Wednesday.
She was hospitalised on arrival as she showed mild symptoms. Health experts conducted a genetic sequencing of her test samples on December 24 “due to travel history from the UK and abnormalities in nucleic acid test results”, the China CDC said.

The patient was found to have a strain different to those found in Shanghai or Wuhan earlier, and further testing confirmed it was the variant known as B.1.1.7 that has been spreading in the UK since October.
Health authorities have carried out contact-tracing, the CDC statement added.
China suspended direct flights to and from Britain indefinitely on December 24 because of the new strain.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said the new variant “may be up to 70 per cent more transmissible than the original version of the disease”.
But there is no evidence so far to suggest that infection with the new variant is more likely to lead to a severe case of Covid-19 or increase the risk of death.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, says the Nigerian Professional Football League Television is expected to make at least 18 billion naira annually.
He said his administration is working on growing the league to make it an integral part of the Nigerian economy.
According to him, thousands of fans in the United Kingdom have subscribed to watch the league on their electronic gadgets.
The NFF boss, who spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, urged Nigerians to support the local league.

He said, “The NPFL TV has come to stay and we are very excited about it. We are projecting about N18bn that we will be making from it every year. It is free-to-air at the moment but we are looking at a subscription fee of N1,500. With that, you can sit in the comfort of your home and watch the NPFL games.
“It is going to have a huge impact on the economy because we are looking at an economy beyond oil, beyond other areas.
“Why can’t we do what they do abroad? We appeal to Nigerians to give us the support. Our traducers, come and join us. Let us build this together.”
Pinnick added, “Only yesterday (Wednesday), 36,000 people in UK subscribed to watching the league on their tabs.
“People should understand that we want to minimise mistakes and that is why it took this long for the league to start. We are growing the league to make it an integral part of our economy and we will make it better.”
It was earlier reported that NPFL stars said the return of televised games will help reduce malpractices in the league and create better opportunities for players to travel abroad for greener pastures.
The 2020/21 season of the NPFL started on Sunday after a nine-month break as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The League Management Company aired three matches in the match-day on television and a video viewing application that have received rave reviews from football fans around the world since it was launched.
The matches showed live were Monday’s local derby between Akwa United and Dakkada FC at the Nest of Champions, Uyo, Enyimba’s 1-0 win over local rivals, Abia Warriors, at the Enyimba Stadium, Aba on Tuesday and Wednesday’s game between Rivers United and Enugu Rangers played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.

Olokode Olawale has resumed duty as the new Commissioner of Police, Osun State Police Command.
Olawale replaced Undie Adie who was just promoted and redeployed as Assistant Inspector General of Police.
The new CP, an indigene of Ogun State, was born some decades ago in Odeda Local Government Area of the State.
In a statement signed by the police spokesperson of the Command, Yemisi Opalola, he disclosed that the police boss, has served in several States of the country across the six Geopolitical Zones.

Olawale was the Commissioner of Police, Border Patrol before his transfer to Osun State in December, 2020.
The Commissioner of Police, a holder of M.SC in Peace & Conflict Resolutions Studies from National Open University of Nigeria and B. SC in Sociology from the University of Ibadan, was appointed into the Nigeria Police Force in March, 1988 as Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (Cadet ASP).

President-elect Joe Biden has named over 100 White House appointees, the Biden-Harris Presidential Transition team has said.
“With today’s announcement, President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris surpass their goal to name over 100 members of our White House team.
“This diverse and talented group not only looks like America but will deliver results for working families on day one,” the team tweeted shortly after Biden nominated Kathleen Hicks to be deputy secretary of defense on Wednesday.
Hicks, who is heading Biden’s transition team at the Pentagon, served in the Defense Department under former president Barack Obama, including as deputy undersecretary of defense for strategy, plans, and forces.

She is currently at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank in Washington.
Biden, who takes office on January 20, also named another civilian, Colin Kahl, who also served in the Obama administration, to a senior Pentagon post.
Kahl was nominated to be undersecretary of defense for policy.
“They know the Pentagon inside and out and are well-positioned to take on the full sweep of challenges facing our armed forces,” Biden said in a statement, including “restoring our alliances.”
Biden has nominated a retired general, Lloyd Austin, to be defense secretary.
Another woman, Christine Fox, served as acting deputy secretary of defense for six months under Obama until her retirement in 2014 but she was not put up for Senate confirmation.

A former Tottenham Hotspur striker, Darren Bent, has urged three Premier League clubs to make a move for Diego Costa ahead of the January transfer window.
The clubs are Tottenham, Wolves and Everton.
Recall that Costa terminated his contract with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday after mutual consent.
Costa said it was the best moment for him and Atletico Madrid to part ways, adding that he has given his best to Diego Simeone’s side.
“Especially now his (Diego Costa’s) contract has been ripped up and you do not have to pay any money for him,” Bent told talkSPORT, adding his fitness is still good and has bags of experience in England.

“Spurs would take him, Wolves would, even someone like Everton on the off chance something happens to [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin,” Bent added.

With the reactions that followed the Christmas message by the Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah, President Muhammadu Buhari has been advised to invite Bishop Kukah and other well-meaning Nigerians for further progressive interrogation of his (Bishop) ideas.
The President, Global Mission Leader, Social Justice and Peace Advocate, Rev. Dr. Gideon Para-Mallam, in a statement made available to newsmen said that millions of Nigerians still want to see Nigeria work and for the present government to succeed.
He added that many were speaking out what may appear as bitter political pills but the truth needed today in Nigeria.
He urged both Christian and Muslim clerics to continue with the responsibility of speaking truth to power, saying, “We must continue and never keep quiet, for to keep quiet would be spiritual suicide. Prophetic voices must NEVER surrender at the altar of political expediency. Saving Nigeria should be our collective priority. Nigerians own Nigeria not the leaders. Our collective wisdom can save Nigeria, not the self-serving interest of some in power.”

He noted that government needs not respond negatively to what Nigerians say which they don’t agree with, stressing, “Governments do not always have the monopoly of being the only ones who know everything about Nigeria and how to fix it. Government’s performance so far, shows a major need for improvement in their primary responsibility of protecting lives and properties.”
He lamented that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government was in the habit of unleashing the Police or DSS on people who demonstrate their fundamental rights to freedom of speech in speaking truth to power, pointing out that Bishop Kukah had spoken not only for himself but millions of Nigerians who harbour much pains, hurts and are wailing deep inside their hearts.
He opined, “Our schools are not safe neither our markets, major roads (especially the notorious Abuja – Kaduna) are not safe. University lecturers are not safe in their homes, religious leaders both Muslims; but especially Christians are not safe in their homes or in their Churches. Our villages are not safe, may be the Government should explain why this is the case even after almost 6 years of their being in power.”
He alleged that this government’s main attraction is the grandeur of power and its trappings and not the responsibility that comes with winning elections and governing responsibly.
Rev. Dr. Gideon Para-Mallam observed that the present administration had been in the habit of coming so hard on Nigerians who happened to make contrary views, pointing out that “the government sought to discredit and rubbish Kukah in December 2019, and it failed, they tried it on Pastor Enoch Adeboye a few months back and they failed and Prof Ango Abdullahi of the Northern Elders forum was dismissed as a one-man band.”
He believed that Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah’s Christmas message took a swipe at the glaring leadership deficits Nigerians all see in the country under President Buhari’s government, lamenting that instead of listening and appreciating Bishop Kukah and others for having the courage to tell them the truth, the Presidents’ spokespersons are crying wolf against Kukah.
He lamented a situation that each time well-meaning Nigerians cried out against the insecurity and insincerity of the leadership, the President’s spokespersons and sometimes security personnel start attacking and going after such decent citizens.
He advised President Buhari and his hangers-on who choose to go after Nigerians for ‘wailing’ over their travails and woes in the country to listen to the voices of wisdom, saying that Nigeria today is ranked among the most dangerous countries to live in the world and also the poverty capital of the world.

Amid rising cases of COVID-19 in the country, the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, has warned that 2021 may be worse.
The NCDC DG, Chinwe Ihekweazu, said this on Wednesday morning, even as he disclosed that Nigeria recorded the highest weekly cases of COVID-19.
He warned Nigerians to protect themselves, adding that the disregard of safety measures in the country might lead to a worse situation in 2021.

“If we don’t protect ourselves now, we may have a worse situation in 2021. Celebrate responsibly.”
On Tuesday, Nigeria recorded 749 new cases of coronavirus.
This brings the number of confirmed cases in the country to 71, 937.

The organised labour in Ekiti State has threatened to welcome the state government into the new year with a protest if Governor Kayode Fayemi’s administration fails to implement the N30,000 minimum wage and the consequential adjustment to workers across board.
The labour, which threatened to protest next week, demanded that Governor Fayemi must pay all the promotion and salary arrears to all categories of workers as negotiated, to avert labour unrest in Ekiti.
Shortly after the minimum wage was signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, Governor Fayemi implemented the payment to workers on grade levels 01 and 06, promising to effect across board when the finances of the state improved.
The threat to embark on a strike to welcome the state into the new year was reached at a meeting held by trade unions operating in the state on Tuesday evening.

The communique conveying the message released to journalists on Wednesday, was signed by the Chairmen of Nigerian Labour Congress, Coms Kolapo Olatunde, Trade Union Congress, Sola Adigun and Joint Negotiating Committee, Kayode Fatomiluyi.
The labour unions said they reached a compromise on the implementation with the government before a strange formula was allegedly introduced to stall the process.
Subsequently, the labour directed “that the agreed New minimum wage and consequential adjustment table should be sustained without any concession.
“That the new minimum wage and consequential adjustment implementation should commence for payment in January *2021* with the accruable arrears from April 2020
“That all arrears of promotions for years 2017, 2018 and 2019; arrears of leave bonuses for years 2016, 2017,2018,2019 and 2020 as well as 6 years for Local governments, subvented institutions and four years for State workers salary arrears and deductions should be paid in earnest.
“That the organized labour should with immediate effect report to the enlarged workers at the State Secretariat complex to allow adequate information to the generality of workforce.
“That failure on the part of the state government to implement the new minimum wage and consequential adjustment as negotiated, as well as various outstanding arrears, the organized labour should mobilise workers for peaceful protest in the first week of January, 2021”.

Bishop Matthew Kukah has been asked to resign from the General Abdul Salaam-led National Peace Committee.
Making the call is the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), in a statement signed and made available to by the director of the organization, Prof Ishaq Akintola.
Recall that Bishop Kukah of the Sokoto Archdiocese of the Catholic Church had in his Christmas message to Nigerians, bemoaned the nepotism which, according to him, has characterised the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The cleric claimed there could have been a coup or war in the country if a non-Nothern Muslim was the president in the last five years and did some of the things Buhari is doing.

MURIC said it believes that those comments by the cleric are inconsistent with his status, particularly as the secretary of Nigeria’s Peace Committee.
“How did such a belligerent combatant emerge as the secretary of Nigeria’s Peace Committee? What good can come from a man who is filled with hate and bias for a large section of the country?” MURIC’s statement asked.
“We demand that Kukah should honourably recuse himself from the Peace Committee. Failure to do so will have a devastating effect of discrediting that committee. It will mean that the committee was set up in the first place for a partisan purpose,” the group said.
According to MURIC, Muslims in Nigeria will no longer have any confidence in the committee, adding that the committee may as well be disbanded.
MURIC wondered why the committee had remained silent ever since the Bishop released the statement, adding that this may be interpreted to mean that the secretary is holding members of the committee to ransom.
MURIC called for the immediate review of the composition and operation of the Peace Committee.

A 42-year-old hairstylist, Adams Amakel Eguvwese has been shot dead in broad daylight as he sat outside his shop in Sapele, Delta State.
The victim popularly known as ’10 over 10′ (the name of his barbing shop), was sitting in the front of his saloon along New road by Otite road junction in Sapele at about 5:45 p.m on Tuesday evening. when the gunman shot him.
A source who simply gave his name as Nathaniel told Vanguard that the gunman came in a numberless blue toyota corolla car, “Adams was sitting outside his barbing saloon when the numberless blue Corolla came, a man holding a shotgun approached him and shot him, he (Adams) ran into the shop and the gunman went after him and shot him again at the entrance of his shop, before he got into the Corolla and drove away” he said in tears.
Adams was said to have been rushed to the Sapele Central hospital where he gave up the ghost

However another source who claimed to be at the scene craving anonymity, told newsmen that Adams was brought back to his shop after Sapele Central hospital refered him to the Delta State University Teaching Hospital in Oghara…”those who rescued him came back that there was no fuel in their vehicle and the crowd who had gathered at the scene of the incident had to raise cash for him, and because Adams has lost so much blood in the process, he could not make it” the motive for the killing was not immediately clear.

A member of the House of Representatives, representing Kabba-Bunu/Ijumu Federal Constituency of Kogi State, Teejay Yusuf, has declared that the ongoing criticisms and verbal attacks against Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah were a deliberate attempt to divert from the genuine issues raised in the Bishop’s Christmas message to the country.
The Bishop of Catholic of Sokoto Diocese, Kukah, had in his Christmas message, “A Nation in search of vindication”, said that there was no way any non-Northern Muslim President could have done a fraction of what President Buhari had done by his nepotism and gotten away with it.
The message, however, met stern resistance and condemnation from the government and members of different groups, such as MURIC, the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum, Coalition of Northern Groups, among others.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, Teejay Yusuf noted that the needless attacks from the Federal Government and what he described as “its bands of sycophants” from the North and other parts of the country, reflect untold hypocrisy and double standards.

The House of Representatives member observed that most of those attacking the Catholic Bishop have extended family members who are facing the stark realities of current waves of insecurity, unemployment and poverty that is far much worse than what obtained 6 years ago.
He emphasized that Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah’s decision to speak truth to power was applauded during the Goodluck Jonathan era but was now being mischievously misinterpreted as a call for insurrection.
He added that it was even more interesting when the minister with the least level of credibility in the entire Federal Cabinet speaks against the expression of such truthful criticism about grave national issues at Christmas period.
Mr Yusuf explained that just this Monday that news report emerged about four different attacks carried out by bandits in Safana and Sabuwa local government areas of Mr President’s Katsina State, whereby a newly-wedded couple and more than eight persons were abducted, with several villagers nursing gunshot wounds.
According to him, the criticism was an essential part of democracy.
He recalled that in the January 6, 1984 letter from the Head of the Federal Military Government, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari to then British Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, he justified the treasonable coup plot that overthrew the democratically-elected Shehu Shagari administration on the basis of failure to actualize citizens’ optimistic expectations.
Specifically, he stated that the letter highlighted corruption in the public service, adding, ‘incompetence in the management of national resource, led the nation to accumulate huge internal and external debts’, loss of jobs, inflation and insecurity “whereby hired assassins and marauders were openly beginning to practice their trade in broad daylight”.
He said, today, contrary to the tripodal utopian promise of “economy, security and anti-corruption” made by the APC Federal Government, all the ills that plagued the Shagari government had become manifestly deepened in dangerous dimensions under the present APC Federal Government.
Nevertheless, he said, in spite of necessary criticisms and unavoidable political differences, Nigerians must all make it clear that whether it is Buhari or any future President from East, West, North or South, Nigerian citizens would resolutely resist any coup agenda by any military adventurer and their anarchist civilian cohorts.
The federal lawmaker further explained that Kukah’s critics easily missed the point without realising that genuine lovers of truth and justice would rise to support the cleric against those making futile efforts to discredit his truthful message.
He added that Bishop Kukah spoke against currently prevalent nepotism, as well as the fearsome indicators of a failed state when he raised issues of ‘endless bloodletting, a collapsing economy, social anomie, domestic and community violence, kidnappings, armed robberies.’

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has said several constructions and dredging have been embarked upon towards bringing about a permanent solution to the challenge of flooding.
According to a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adeshina, the ministry had already commenced the construction and concrete lining of the nine-kilometre Akinola/Aboru drainage channel.
Adeshina noted that the construction, with a completion period of 24 months, would permanently solve the Aboru flooding problem, which he said dated back to 1989.
He added that in addition to the work on the Akinola Aboru channel, the ministry had commenced work in other areas.

The statement said, “Prominent among these are 13 secondary channels: Abraham Adesanya Collector Drain/Dredging of System 63, Lekki Expressway to de-flood Abraham Adesanya Estate, Lekki Expressway, Ogombo and its adjoining areas.
“The Freedom Way Channel, Lekki that takes away flood from the Lekki-Epe Expressway, part of Itedo and part of Admiralty way straight into the Lagos Lagoon.”
Adeshina added that the same applied to the Orchid Road Collector drains off Lekki-Epe Expressway in Eti-Osa, to de-flood Orchid Road and the numerous estates within the neighbourhood in Lekki.
According to him, the project would eliminate the overflow of the area with stormwater after heavy rain falls.
He said, “Dredging and construction is also ongoing on the Fish Farm Collector Drain, Ikorodu to provide relief to fish farmers who are facing flooding issues due to the on-going construction on Ikorodu-Shagamu Road.
“There is construction at the Edun Alaran Collector Drain, to alleviate the flooding problem being encountered at Beckley Estate and its environs in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area.”
The ministry said other areas included the Osapa Lagoon Channel, to de-flood Ologolo Lekki Expressway at Jakande and the Kusenla regional roads, the drains from Odugunwa Street through Buraimoh Alli Fetuga, Ogunmekan Onabola, Charly Boy, amongst others.
Adeshina made the assurance that painstaking efforts were being made to ensure that flash floods disappeared after a maximum of five hours, following such downpours.
He also noted that the ministry had positioned the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang to clean up existing channels to free them of refuse and silts.
According to him, from its reactivation in October 2019 till date, EFAG had successfully maintained, cleaned and de-flooded a total of 307 km of drains across several local governments of the state.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has cancelled New Year crossover service in its churches nationwide.

This is coming after the Christian leadership in the country directed worship centres to respect governments’ directives on New Year crossover services.
The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev Samson Ayokunle, said CAN understand the unfortunate state the coronavirus pandemic has put everybody worldwide.
However, RCCG instructed members to connect with the virtual service of the church.
It stated further that the January Holy Ghost Service (the first of the year 2021) taking place on Friday, January 8, will be held virtually.
Members were advised to tune in to Dove television and other electronic media to link up with the General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye’s End of Year message and other aspects of the crossover programme.

<div>“Every night we are faced with phone calls of patients desperate for care.</div>

<div>” So, unfortunately, January will be a tough month for all of us. It will be tough.</div>

<div>“But we still have an opportunity to do what we need to do, liaising with state governors to be more purposeful in implementing the measures that we have collectively agreed on.</div>

<div>“We have seen some of them doing that but many of the states in the country haven’t and pretend as if there will be no consequences.</div>

<div>“This is the reality we face and so we have got to brace ourselves for January.”</div>

<div>The NCDC boss noted that in terms of the new variant of the virus, there was no change in the presentation of symptoms.</div>

<div>The only difference, he said, is that it is more transmissible which would mean more cases, including critical ones, and the possible increase in fatalities.</div>

Nigeria registered 749 new COVID-cases on Tuesday, almost twice the 397 announced on Monday.

Three deaths were also announced, two in Abuja and one in Kano, putting the national death toll at 1,267. Abuja has 101 death toll.
 
One of the dead in Abuja on Tuesday was Professor Femi Odekunle, a 77 year-old member of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC).
 
He died at the Gwagwalada Isolation Centre.
 
Amid warnings by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control that COVID-19 cases will shoot up in January, Nigeria’s Covid cases have never followed a normal trajectory.
 
This is because the daily figures are dependent on people coming out for tests or people falling ill and requesting for tests.
Thus during the holidays, tests reduced and infection cases went southwards.
 
On Monday 28 December, a public holiday in Nigeria, 397 cases were confirmed.
 
Cases went to 749 a day after.
 
As of 29 December, 937,712 samples have been tested by NCDC.
 
Out of the samples, 85,560 COVID-cases have been confirmed so far.
 
NCDC said 71,937 have been discharged, with active cases now 12, 356.
 
The high number of cases is creating fears and resuscitating isolations centres.
 
In the daily cases announced Tuesday, Lagos led with 299, followed by Plateau with 131 cases.
 
Kaduna reported 83 cases and Abuja 74.

The Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has insisted that he has no interest in partisan politics.
He stated this during a media briefing with journalists at St Bakhita Secretariat in Sokoto State on Monday.
Kukah also denied calling for a coup in Nigeria and said different lies were being peddled about in his name.
The cleric has been in the news ever since he published a Christmas message last week, accusing President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration of nepotism.

Bishop Kukah used the opportunity to make it clear that he has no interest in politics.
“I have no plan and will never play partisan politics for any reason.
“Those who link my message to partisan politics are only playing to the gallery.
“Take, for instance, brilliant Nigerian youths making comments about Chelsea or Arsenal and have never been to England, does that make them players of such club sides?
“So, why will someone think because Bishop Kukah is speaking therefore he is a politician? People who make this argument are totally ignorant of elementary politics and ignorant of the role of a Priest.
“The truth is that a lot of us have not seen a priest saying what I am saying. The truth of the matter is, we are all in politics, but party politics for me, no. I am not a member of any political party and I cannot be. If it comes to voting, I do my right,” he said.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA, has condemned the abduction of the Auxiliary Bishop of Owerri Catholic Archdiocese, His Eminence, Rt. Rev. Dr. Moses Chikwe in Owerri, Imo State.
HURIWA said the abduction was an indication that the State was in the hands of outlaws.
The group said the situation called for deeper introspection as the state’s political leadership is “rudderless and ruthlessly incompetent.”
Recall that kidnappers had whisked away Chikwe in Owerri. His car and official regalia were later found near the Assumpta Cathedral in Owerri.

Reacting, the rights group insisted that the abducted Bishop must be released unharmed.
A statement by HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko said those who kidnapped the Bishop are agents of destabilization seeking religious war.
The group lamented that Imo State House of Assembly seems to be dominated by political nitwits and praise singers of the poorly performing Governor of Imo State, Mr. Hope Uzodinma who uses media propaganda and subterfuge as methodologies of governance which are not workable in a constitutional democracy.
HURIWA said: “The criminal and treacherous act of forcefully abducting the revered Church leader by armed kidnappers has demonstrated that indeed the decision of the Supreme Court of Nigeria to impose as governor someone who came fourth in an election for the governor of Imo State in 2019 was targeted at destroying good governance in the heartland of Igbo land and is a calculated and choreographed drama from the topmost echelons of the central government to deny the Igbo speaking areas the opportunity to determine who governs them.
“The entire Imo State is in a state of political and economic paralysis just as there is a total absence of any semblance of governance but what is on ground is a rule by mobsters and has been converted to a place whereby raw might is right and has progressively become a primitive state of nature whereby life is short, brutish, uninteresting, deadly and bloody. Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that terrorists are entering the South West geo-political zone of the country through Oke Ogun.
Makinde said terrorists and bandits from Mali and other countries in the West African region are entering through a border in Saki, one of the towns in the State.
The Governor, who spoke when he visited Saki, noted that the issue of banditry was one of the challenges his government was battling with.
He added that the inauguration of Amotekun Corps was yielding positive results.

Makinde noted that Amotekun Corps had been able to flush out some bandits terrorising residents of the State.
He said, “So, it was really tasking. Of course, in our locality here, the issue of banditry is also another issue.
“For instance, Saki shares an international border and it is more of an international issue because we have bandits all the way from Mali that are trying to cross.
“Once they gain entrance into anywhere they can operate, they will stay there.
“When we inaugurated Amotekun, you gave us your support. When some bandits went to the bush at Kishi, we were able to flush them out with all the efforts of all of us here. So, we want to use this opportunity to say thank you to you all.”

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has given reasons some of his defenders didn’t feature in the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Monday night.
Lampard made six changes to the team that lost to Arsenal on Boxing Day.
Reece James, Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma did not play a single minute of the match.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Lampard confirmed that James wasn’t in the 18-man squad, as he has picked up a hamstring problem.

Former Senator, Ben Bruce has offered to reconcile President Muhamadu Buhari and Bishop Hassan Kukah.
The Bishop of Sokoto Diocese has been under criticism from allies and supporters of the President following a message on Christmas Day where he slammed the President on appointments.
The Bishop in the statement also said there would have been coup if the President had not been a Northerner Muslim.
However, other groups such as the Christian Association of Nigeria, Catholic Church, Middle Belt Leaders, among others have also backed Kukah.

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former aviation minister, has backed Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Mathew Hassan Kukah over his Christmas day message.
Fani-Kayode said Bishop Kukah’s remark was the “bitter truth.”
Bishop Kukah, in his Christmas Day message had accused President Muhammadu Buhari-led government of nepotism.
The clergyman said there would have been a coup if a non-Northern Muslim had become president and did some of the things Buhari was doing.

The Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) has announced that ten patients have died as a result of COVID-19 related complications in the last 24 hours.
The health agency made this known via its Twitter account on Monday, adding that 397 new infections of the virus were also recorded in the country.
The NCDC said that the new infections were reported from 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), which brought the country’s total number of infected people to 84,811.
It also stated that there are 12,126 active cases across the country, while 323 patients across the country had been discharged after testing negative for the virus.

The NCDC said that 144 of the new infections were recorded in Lagos, 83 in Plateau, 48 in Kaduna, 36 in Adamawa and 22 in Rivers.
While Oyo reported 16 cases, Kebbi 10, Nasarawa and Sokoto had seven cases each.
Five cases each were confirmed in the FCT and Kano; four in Edo, Jigawa 3, Ogun and Akwa Ibom state had 2 cases, while Niger, Bauchi and Zamfara had 1 each.
The NCDC stated that till date, 84,811 cases have been confirmed, 71,357, discharged and 1,264 deaths recorded in the 36 states and the FCT.

Arsenal are closely monitoring Brighton’s full back, Tariq Lamptey, with Barcelona preparing to move for Hector Bellerin, according to the UK Mirror.
Bellerin featured for the Gunners on Boxing Day, as they beat Chelsea 2-1 at the Emirates.
The Spaniard started his youth career at Barcelona, before making the switch to Arsenal in 2011.
Bellerin has gone on to become a mainstay in the first team in recent years.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has been advised to provide storage facilitates and emergency power supply before purchasing Covid-19 vaccine.
Shehu Sani, former Kaduna lawmaker warned that such provision was necessary in order to preserve the vaccines at minus 70degree Celsius.
The former lawmaker said this on Monday on his Twitter page.
His post read: “To the federal government: Before you Credit N400 Billion to #COVID19 vaccine manufacturers, make adequate provisions for storage facilities and emergency power supply that can preserve them at minus 70 degree Celsius. It is not our normal fridge oh, ehen.”

Meanwhile, the Presidential Taskforce (PTF) on COVID-19 has promised to administer the vaccine free to Nigerians.
National Coordinator of PTF, Sani Aliyu disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday.
He added that President Muhammadu Buhari had given the PTF the mandate to proceed with preparations with regard to the vaccine which will at least be given free to 40m Nigerians when available.

Pastor William Kumuyi, General Overseer of the Deeper Christian Life Ministries, has come under attack for staying mute over the alleged threats on the mother of a s3xually abused student of Deeper Life High School.
Recall that Deborah Okezie, mother of Don Davis, the Deeper Life High School student s3xually abused, raised alarm of threat to her life on Thursday.
She accused the Akwa Ibom State Government officials and some parents of indicted students of intimidation.
This followed her initial outcry that her son was starved and molested by some senior school students in the school.

Although the deeper life ministry has pledged to seek justice for the victim, some Nigerians on Monday took to their Twitter page, calling on the General Overseer, Pastor Kumuyi to take immediate action and personally speak on the issue.

South Africa has reached the one million mark for coronavirus cases, with 9,502 new infections announced on Sunday night.
Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, who made the confirmation, said the total number of people who have been infected with the virus now stands at 1,004,413.
Mkhize said 214 deaths were recorded, bringing the total number of fatalities to 26,735.
According to the health minister, the new figures indicate that South Africa is experiencing a second wave of the pandemic.

He further revealed that the government would need to consider further restrictions in other to curb the spread of the virus, NAN reports.
Here in Nigeria, the government has also announced a partial shutdown for the next five weeks, in a bid to stem the second wave of coronavirus across the country.
The PTF Chairman, Boss Mustapha, issued the advisory on Monday at the PTF briefing in Abuja.
According to Mustapha, President Muhammadu Buhari had authorised the Presidential Task Force to engage with the states and the Federal Capital Territory to assume full ownership of this stage of the response.
He said that bars, night clubs, pubs and event centres, and recreational venues were considered super-spreasders of the virus.
States and the FCT are to shut down all informal and formal festivity events including weddings, conferences, congresses, office parties, concerts, seminars, sporting activities.
He also ordered that Churches and Mosques should not be filled beyond 50 per cent of their installed capacity during worship and prayer time, while face masks and social distancing are compulsory.

Ten (10) people, including four security personnel, were reportedly killed on boxing day during an attack by Boko Haram in Shaffa, Azare and Tashan Alade villages in Hawul local government area of Borno State, northeast Nigeria.
The attack in the northeast, which started in Garkida where six people were killed and eleven persons persons on Christmas eve, prompted Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum to visit Hauwul local government on Sunday to condole with the people.
Residents of the area said they had knowledge of the attack on the 21st December, 2020 and informed the security agencies.
“They came in six gun trucks and burnt down five churches, and many houses in our villages” Usman Audu said, adding “They also killed 10 people and injured many others. We all slept in the bush, including our aged parents.”

He said the assailants went from village to village.
“In Azare they burnt a police station and killed two policemen, a member of the civil defence and a vigilante,” Bulus James said.
“We recovered five dead bodies with gunshots on them from the bush, along with six women with gunshot injuries. They were all hit while trying to escape,” he added.
The attackers while at Tashan Alade forced residents to flee into the mountaints.
“They burnt down three churches and houses; two people were also killed in Azare,” Kanadi, a resident said.

The Ogun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to allow churches observe the usual December 31 cross-over vigil into the new year.
Recall that Gov Abiodun last week banned cross-over night services in churches so as to forestall the spread of the second wave of the deadly COVID-19.
The Ogun CAN Chairman, Bishop Tunde Akin-Akinsanya, in an open letter to Abiodun, said he had received so much calls from church leaders, begging for the observance of cross-over nights on December 31, 2020.
Writing on behalf of the entire structure of CAN in Ogun State, Akin-Akinsanya craved the indulgence of Abiodun to allow for the observance of the cross-over vigil in churches in Ogun, as it is the case in Lagos State.

CAN requested that churches be allowed to observe the cross-over night from 10:30pm on December 31, 2020 till 12:15am on January 1, 2021.
The religious body also pleaded for the relaxation of curfew so that worshippers will be allowed to move back home between 12:15am and 1am of January 1.
Akin-Akinsanya assured the governor that churches will observe all necessary coronavirus protocols and guidelines recommended by government.

The House of Representatives has denied reports that it apologized to President Muhamadu Buhari over the saga that followed his recent invitation to the National Assembly.
It would be recalled that the House recently invited the President following a motion moved by some lawmakers from Borno.
However, the President declined to honour the invitation after he had initially agreed to do so.
The development led to the call by some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) calling for the impeachment of the President.

In a statement by the Speaksperson of the House, Ben Kalu, he debunked media reports that the House apologized to the President over the invitation.
“It has come to the knowledge of the House that few sections of the media reported that the House apologized to the Presidency over the resolution of the House which arose from the motion sponsored by members from Borno State, requesting for the invitation of the President to brief the nation on the state of insecurity in the country.
“The President or the Presidency as the case may be, never sought for an apology from the House of Representatives for carrying out her constitutional responsibility to the Nigerian electorate. Where then did the media get the report that the House as an institution apologized to anyone? Media professionals are advised to uphold the ethics of their profession.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the House never apologized to anyone for exercising her constitutional mandate and the 9th Assembly of the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila will not do anything to desecrate or destroy the critical institution of democracy – the Legislature. We strongly believe that President Muhammadu Buhari subscribes to these democratic ethos and ideals as well,” he said.

Bill Gates, a co-founder of Microsoft and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), has said he does not understand why coronavirus numbers have not been as high as predicted in Africa.

Recall that Gates and his wife, Melinda, had in more than one occasion, warned that there will be dead bodies all over the streets of Africa if the world does not act fast enough.
 
Melinda said her heart was in Africa, adding that she is worried that the continent might not be able to handle the devastating effect of the virus.
 
But in his end of the year note, Bill said he was happy his prediction about Africa has not happened, “One thing I’m happy to have been wrong about—at least, I hope I was wrong—is my fear that Covid-19 would run rampant in low-income countries. So far, this hasn’t been true,” he wrote.
In most of sub-Saharan Africa, for example, case rates and death rates remain much lower than in the U.S. or Europe and on par with New Zealand, which has received so much attention for its handling of the virus.
 
“The hardest-hit country on the continent is South Africa—but even there, the case rate is 40 percent lower than in the US, and the death rate is nearly 50 percent lower.
 
“We don’t have enough data yet to understand why the numbers aren’t as high as I worried they would get — but gave probable reasons Africa was not as affected as expected.”
 
Meanwhile, Nigeria is currently fighting the second wave of the coronavirus.
 
The Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 had last week announced a second wave of the dreaded virus.
 
The Federal Government on Tuesday directed civil servants from grade level 12 and below to stay at home.
 
They are to remain at home for five weeks following the second wave of the Covid-19 disease in Nigeria.
 
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, on Friday stated that Covid-19 related deaths now stand at 1,246.

Barely five days to the end of the year 2020, the Central Bank of Nigeria has disclosed that a survey carried out by its Statistics Department revealed that the naira is expected to depreciate further in January 2021.

The report, titled, ‘December 2020 Business Expectations Survey Report’ added that there might also be a steady rise in interest rate from December till the next six months.
The naira witnessed a sharp fall in recent weeks, reaching its lowest on November 30, 2020, when it exchanged for N500/$1. Since then, the dollar has been hovering between N460 and N470. As of Friday, however, one dollar exchanged for 465  in the parallel market.
Also, the Nigerian economy had on November 21 slid into its second recession in five years when the economy shrank again in the third quarter. The recession is said to be the worst in 36 years, according to the data obtained from the World Bank. The Federal Government and some economists had expressed optimism that the country would exit the recession in 2021.
Meanwhile, in the 11-page survey report, the CBN said it conducted the survey online from December 7 to 11, with a sample size of 1,050 businesses nationwide. It noted that a response rate of 91.3 per cent was achieved and that the sample covered the agriculture/services, manufacturing, wholesale/retail trade and construction sectors.
It added that the respondent firms were made up of small, medium and large corporations covering both import-oriented and export-oriented businesses.
The report partly read, “Respondent firms expect the naira to depreciate in the current month and next month but appreciate in the next two months and the next six months.
“Inflation level is expected to rise in the next six and 12 months as firms expect the average inflation rate in the next six months and the next 12 months to stand at 13.24 and 14.51 per cent, while borrowing rate is expected to rise in the current month, next month, next two months and the next six months with indices of 19.2, 14.9, 14.7 and 14.3 points.”
In the survey, respondent firms expressed pessimism on the macro economy, while their outlook on the volume of business activities, average capacity utilisation, the volume of total order and financial condition (working capital) were positive.
The CBN stated that respondent firms identified insufficient power supply, unfavourable economic climate, competition, high interest rates, unclear economic laws, financial problems, unfavourable political climate, access to credit, insufficient demand, lack of equipment, lack of materials input, and labour problems as major factors constraining business activities in December 2020.

Nigerian scientists say that immunising Nigerians with COVID-19 vaccine when clinical trials have not been done in the country is very risky and should be reconsidered.
They also expressed worries over its likely long-term impacts.

Nigeria expects its batch of vaccines by first quarter of 2021, with the Director-General of the National Centre for Disease Control, Dr. ChikweIhekweazu, saying that 20 percent of the population would have access to the vaccine.
Speaking on the issue, avirologist at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Sunday Omilabu; and a Pharmaceutical Research Scientist with the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Abuja, Prof. Martin Emeje, are of the view that immunising Nigerians with COVID-19 vaccine when clinical trials were not done in the country is very risky and should be reconsidered.
According to the World Health Organisation, while three COVID-19 vaccines have received ‘emergency use approval’ of some national regulatory authorities, none of them has received the pre-qualification by the World Health Organisation.
The WHO, however, disclosed that an assessment of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is expected by the end of December, adding that assessment of other vaccine candidates will follow thereafter.
According to Nature, the fastest any vaccine had previously been developed, from viral sampling to approval, was four years, and that was for mumps in the 1960s.
Nature in its article, The lightning-fast quest for COVID vaccines — and what it means for other diseases, reported that Pfizer and BioNTech got their vaccines approved less than eight months after the trial started, noting that the rapid turnaround was achieved by overlapping trials and because they did not encounter safety concerns.
The quest for COVID-19 vaccine which started in early 2020 has, therefore, resulted in vaccines being used for immunisation by December – a period of less than a year.
Recall that vaccine developer, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna applied for emergency use approvals for their vaccines in the United States and from the European Union drug regulator after some positive results from their clinical trials.
While the United States Food and Drug Administration has already granted emergency use approval for COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, the European Medicines Agency has also approved COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech.
Speaking with newsmen, Prof. Omilabu said Nigeria should exercise caution before accepting to immunise citizens with vaccines that were granted emergency use approval in Europe and the United States.
Omilabu, who is also the director, Centre for Human and Zoonotic Virology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, said it might be very risky to start immunising Nigerians and Africans with the COVID-19 vaccines as they have not gone through the regular scientific process before the emergency approval.
