 An angry housewife, Annabel Owhoghovo, of Owohelogbo community Isoko axis in Delta State, on Friday, allegedly dumped her six-month-old baby at a dump site after having a quarrel with her husband. 
 
It was reliably gathered that the quarrel degenerated into physical combat, where the couple allegedly traded punches during night fall.

It was learnt that on Thursday evening, when her husband returned from work, he asked his wife to massage his feet. The woman, who was reluctant to carry out the task, was alleged to have used abusive words on her husband, which led to heated exchange of words and physical combat. 
 
The fight was said to have continued on Friday morning after some neighbours who got wind of their quarrel moved in to settle the dispute. 
 
She was, however, said to have told her husband that she was visiting her mother in Abraka, only for her to allegedly dump the baby on a waste dump midway. 
 
The cry of the baby was said to have called the attention of passersby, who took the baby to a police station in the community. 
 
The Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Mrs. Celestina Kalu, confirmed to our correspondent that the woman had been arrested. 
 
She said the wife was presently helping the Police at the Police division in their investigations. She added that on completion of investigations, she would be charged to court.

EFCC begins probe of ministerial nominees

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission will on Monday begin investigations into petitions written against President Muhammadu Buhari’s 21 ministerial nominees. 
 
It was gathered that a decision was taken by the leadership of the anti-graft agency last week to start the process of considering petitions forwarded to the National Assembly against the ministerial nominees.

As at Friday, about 25 petitions had been submitted against the nominees at the Senate. 
 
Copies of such petitions were also said to have been sent to the EFCC and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. 
 
A source privy to the development, who spoke to newsmen, said the Senate leadership had contacted the EFCC last week to assist in looking into the petitions written against the ministerial nominees. 
 
The source who is a top official at the EFCC said, “The office would start looking into the petitions written against the ministerial nominees on Monday. 
 
“The National Assembly contacted the commission on the issue and the decision is to start looking at such petitions on Monday.” 
 
Similarly, an operative of the ICPC, who also spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to the press on the matter, said on Saturday that the commission was expecting an invitation from the National Assembly leadership to commence investigation into the allegations contained in the petition against the nominees. 
 
The source said it was not possible for the National Assembly to carry out the investigation into the petitions against the nominees without involving the anti-graft agencies. 
 
“It is true that the agency is expecting to be involved in the investigation of the allegations contained in the petitions against the nominees. 
 
“The National Assembly also said it clearly that they were going to involve the anti-graft agencies in the issue of investigating the petition. 
 
“For now, what is not very clear is to what extent they intend to involve the anti-graft agencies.” the source added. 
 
The spokesperson of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said he did not know anything about the commission’s involvement in the screening exercise at the National Assembly. 
 
Also, the Resident Consultant, Media and Events, of the ICPC, Mr. Folu Olamiti, said he would neither confirm nor deny the involvement of the commission in the investigation of the allegations contained in the petitions. 
 
Similarly, the Code of Conduct Bureau had also said the nominees were bound to declare their assets before the Senate. 
 
The Senate had stated that as part of its guidelines for screening the ministerial nominees due to commence on Tuesday, each of the nominees would be required to produce evidence of assets declaration to the bureau. 
 
The Chairman of the CCB, Mr. Sam Saba, in his response to our correspondent’s enquiry through a text message on Saturday, said the ministerial nominees were required under Section 149 of the Constitution to declare their assets before being screened. 
 
He said, “It is the usual procedure — or as you put it, the convention — for ministerial nominees to declare their assets before senate screening; and not only ministers but any would-be public officer, whether appointed or elected, so long as he or she requires screening by the Senate. 
 
“Section 149 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) provides that ‘the Minister of the Government of the Federation shall not enter upon the duties of his office, unless he has declared his assets as prescribed in the Constitution’.” 
 
Saba could not confirm whether any of the nominees had initiated steps to declare their assets before the close of work on Friday, but he hinted that in the past, the Presidential Liaison Officer would usually collect the assets declaration forms from the bureau in bulk and distribute to the nominees. 
 
He said, “The bureau would attend to the ministerial nominees on demand of the Form CCB1 from any of our offices in the 36 states plus the office in the Federal Capital Territory and in the Headquarters, Abuja. The forms are however submitted at the headquarters Abuja. 
 
“In the recent, Presidential Liaison Officers collected the forms for such nominees; that is to say, request is made in bulk by the PLO for the forms and issued out individually to each ministerial nominee.” 
 
When contacted, the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang said, “I did not collect forms on behalf of anyone. The fact that your name is submitted (as a nominee) does not mean you are appointed.” 
 
The leadership of the Senate will meet on Monday to review the modalities and procedures for the three-day screening of ministerial nominees scheduled to begin on Tuesday. 
 
Part of the conditions earlier agreed upon by the Senate in a closed-session on Thursday, included, among others, the submission of assets declaration proofs; approval of nominations by at least two senators from nominee’s states; while those who have petitions against them must have a clean bill of health from the Senate’s public petitions committee. 
 
Our correspondent learnt on Saturday that the criticisms that greeted the Senate’s procedure for the screening made it to start making moves to review the modalities. 
 
A principal officer of the Senate, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that wide consultations had been carried out among various segments of the society to get their input on how best the Senate can carry out the assignment. 
 
He explained that the various inputs by Nigerians would be collated latest on Monday morning and presented before the leadership of the Senate, who would review it and make their final decision known to their colleagues before the screening would start on Tuesday. 
 
The source said, “We are not claiming that we know it all in the Senate. Although we are the representatives of the people, we should not impose our decisions on people without finding out their opinions. 
 
“The leadership of the Eighth Senate had vowed to carry everybody along in its decision-making (process) and that is why we have consulting widely because we would not want to be accused of witch-hunting any nominee or that we are using the screening to hit back at the presidency.” 
 
The Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yusuph Olaniyonu, told our correspondent that the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, had been seeking the views of Nigerians, especially the media and other pressure groups, on the screening modalities adopted by the red chamber. 
 
Olaniyonu said, “The media, the civil society organisations and other pressure groups are very critical to national development. Their views are therefore needed as a necessary guide to assist the Senate in the discharge of its responsibility, especially as far as the screening of ministerial nominees is concerned. “ 
 
Efforts to speak to the Chairman, Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Dino Melaye, on the issue were futile on Saturday, as calls and text message put across to his mobile phone number were not responded to as of the time of filing this report. 
 
The Special Assistant to the Senate President on New Media, Mr. Bankole Omishore, in a statement on Saturday, also confirmed that the screening and confirmation process of the first batch of ministerial nominees would be streamed live on the National Assembly website. 
 
According to him, the websites, www.nass.gov.ng and www.senate.gov.ng, could be used by Nigerians to send in questions they would like to ask nominees by forwarding same to their respective senators using the hashtag #MinisterialScreening. 
 
Omishore added that all questions must be received before 5pm on Monday. 
 
The statement read in parts, “The @NGRSenate Twitter handle will also be providing live tweets throughout the screening process. 
 
“Nigerians would recall that the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, took office amidst a pledge to reform the Senate and make its processes more transparent, inclusive and visible by employing e-Parliamentary technology in the Upper Chambers. 
 
“Since then, the Senate President has tasked the Committee on Rules and Business to develop an e-Parliamentary system that can be employed at Senate Plenary sessions. 
 
“This screening will create an avenue for Nigerians from all works of life to partake in governance, as the bridge between representatives and constituents will be bridged; with senators asking questions sourced from Nigerians on Social Media.” 
 
In addition, Omishore explained that the submitted resumes of candidates will be made available in the public space for Nigerians to examine.

Former Super Eagles captain, Vincent Enyeama has been in the news following his rift with Coach Sunday Oliseh. Enyeama announced his resignation from the national team via the social platform. In this interview with Galaxy Television, Enyeama however, the Akwa Ibom born goal tender is saying he wants to be part of the team to re-write the history of Nigeria football. 
 
We have heard so much about your rift with Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh. tell us, what has been going on? 
 
First, of all, I want to thank Nigerians. I appreciate the passion, the criticism, everything. I want to say a very big thank you. 
 
On the issue on ground, I think this is not the best way to treat someone who has served the country with so much enthusiasm and so much passion, so much dedication, you know, commitment. I think I have honoured almost all the matches I have been invited to play for the Super Eagles. 
 
So to be treated the way I was treated a couple of days ago, I personally don’t accept that. 
 
What really happened in the camp between you and Oliseh? How were treated? 
 
When I came to camp, I had no issues with my coach. The coach has been a big part of me. He is there for me. He fought for me when I had issues with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). The coach defended me all the way. I have never had an issue with him. 
 
He (Oliseh) doesn’t know me. I don’t know him. We have never played together. We have never shared a football field, together. 
 
The first thing that happened when I first arrived at the camp was a meeting. At the meeting, the coach addressed the players. The first thing he said was that he invited four goalkeepers to camp because he never expected me to come to the camp. 
 
Secondly, he said that I was no more the captain of the team. That he had decided and he calls the shots. That was before dinner. He ended his speech with, “Enjoy your dinner”. 
 
For me, it was a little bit shocking because I spoke with the NFF chairman (Amaju Pinnick) during the burial of my mother in Akwa Ibom. I was trying to excuse myself from coming to the camp because of the burial. He said, “No, Vincent, you have to be in camp”. He pushed me to be in camp. And because I really respect him (Pinnick), I told him I was going to leave everything, the thanksgiving service for my late mum. I told him, I was going to abandon it and come to the camp, which I did. 
 
All the family meetings, everything we had to do with the people in the village, I abandoned all that and came to the camp. 
 
So, for me to get my first welcome message of being stripped of captainship was a little bit not good for me. And after I had taken my food and ate, dinner had commenced. I am just telling you what played out. 
 
I said, “Coach, please, I would like to say something.” He said, “No, you can’t talk”. I insisted that I wanted to talk. He insisted that I can’t talk. He then said that if I wanted to talk, he would order the team out and nobody would listen to me and I would sit there and talk alone or I would have to walk out if I insisted on talking. 
 
I said, “Coach, I still want to say something.” And he said, “Vincent, get out! You have to leave now. If you don’t leave, I’m going to call the cops, the security to throw you out of this hotel.” He used the word, “security”. 
 
He then got up, went to the door and opened it and commanded me to go out. He said, “Go out, go out, Vincent! Or I am going to call the security.” 
 
So that is how it played out. 
 
So, for me to lose my mother, be invited to the camp, only to be stripped of captainship. Then out of argument, to be threatened to have the cops or security called for me, to me, I think it is the height of it. 
 
I have heard all sorts of things that Neymar this and that. They never treated Thiago Silva that way. They never treated Mascherano that way. Some Nigerians can say whatever they want to say, but for me, I feel that’s not the right way to be treated. 
 
I am still open for playing for Nigeria till the day I die. Till the day I can stop playing football. Till the day God gives me the grace to stop playing football or to keep playing football. As long as I can play football, I will play for my country. Even at the age of 100, if I can play football, I am still open to playing for Nigeria. 
 
But, now, I just want to go home and be with my family. 
 Does this mean that after speaking with the NFF, you will seek official excuse to leave the camp? 
 
Yesterday, the coach (Oliseh) came back to the bus and said he doesn’t know me, he doesn’t want to know me, he doesn’t care about me, and he doesn’t have anything to do with me. 
 
That is a part of this issue that people don’t know because I haven’t said anything. I keep my mouth quiet, and I said nothing on that bus. 
 
When he said this, you still trained with the team? 
 
I am still with the team because Pinnick told me to wait till he comes (to Belgium). The president of the NFF told me to wait, that is why I am waiting. I am respecting him. That is why I am still in the camp. 
 
The coach said he doesn’t need me, doesn’t want me, he doesn’t know me. And he doesn’t want to know me. So, I shouldn’t be forced to play with such a coach. 
 
I don’t have a problem with him (Oliseh). He is a great man. He is a a great guy. He is a nice guy. But, I tell you the truth, I just wanna go home and be with my family. This period, I am mourning my mum, I don’t want any more problems. Now, people are saying all kinds of things like, “Vincent is stubborn”. 
 
I don’t know if there is anybody in this world who is treated that way that would not want to know why he is being stripped of the captainship. 
 
I am not so concerned about being captain. I don’t have a problem with it (being removed as captain). But, I think I should be given an excuse, a reason why. 
 
I have been playing for Nigeria for 13 years. So I feel if a decision is being taken on me, I think I deserve to know why. 
 
And moreso, I was being invited. I did not come through the backdoor. I was invited. 
 
In my club, in the European Club, if a coach doesn’t play you in a match, he comes to your room, or he calls you, or he invites you to his room. He tells you, “You’re not going to play today, because I want to field another player”. It shows respect. 
 
I have worked so hard for my country. I was part of the success of Nigerian football, then I am being treated like that without being given a chance to express myself. Then, I think that is not fair. 
 
I am feeling so sad. I am feeling really, really sad. Because I would have stopped playing football for Nigeria after the World Cup. But, then, I changed my mind because I love the country so much. I love Nigeria so much. I want her to return to glory. I want to be part of that glory. I want to be part of the pain. I want to be part of what happens in Nigerian football. It breaks my heart that Nigerian football is struggling. But, then, I want to be part of rewriting our story. 
 
But, if the coach and the people don’t want me to be part of it, I believe there are better ways of taking me out. You can call me and talk to me. You can send me a message. You can do a phone call. You don’t need to invite me to camp, to tell me in the presence of everyone. You don’t need to invite me to tell me that you’re going to call the cops for me. 
 
I did nothing wrong. I am not an armed robber. I feel bad, I feel bad. I am telling you the truth. I feel really bad. I feel very sad. 
 In this trying moment, when you lost your mother, and are now dealing with this row with your coach, what can you say you have learnt from this episode. What have you taken away from all this? 
 
I have learnt a lot. Not to trust any man. But to trust only God. Only God doesn’t disappoint. But this is so painful for me. What do you think those young players will think? ‘Oh, if Vincent is being treated this way, what about me? I don’t have a future.’ It discourages people from playing for their country. It discourages people from giving so much for this country. Imagine you were working so hard for your establishment and one day , your boss walks in and says,”You’re fired.” How would you feel? 
 
Hmmmmm 
 
Answer me. In the presence of everybody in the meeting room, he says, “Mr. Peter, you’re fired! You are relieved of your duties.” I wonder what you would do? 
 
I would summon up courage and ask why. 
 
That is what I did. I asked, ‘Why?’ And he said, “Walk out or I’ll call the cops.” 
 
There is a report that you entered into an altercation with Oliseh. Did you threaten to fight your coach at any point in time? 
 
Never. Never. Never. God is my witness. God is the judge. I was prevented from speaking. I was never even given a chance to speak. 
 
I have heard a lot of people say I should have sat down. I should have taken it easy. 
 
For God’s sake, I have played for Nigeria for 13 years. Not one, not two (but 13 years). 
 
So, if I am being treated like a player who is just coming into the camp for his debut game, then I don’t need to be here. It’s a simple thing. 
 
The coach says he doesn’t count on me. I don’t have a problem with that. For me, I just want to respect my mum and walk home.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Turkur Buratai, in Lagos on Saturday warned officers and men of the Nigerian Army against fraternising with politicians. 
 
Buratai gave the warning while addressing officers and men at the 9 Brigade in Ikeja, Lagos. 
 
”I want you to remain professional and apolitical.

”Any officer or soldier seeing hibernating with politicians or getting involved in politics of whatever nature will not be tolerated and such officer will be dealt with accordingly if caught,” he said. 
 
Buratai noted that the country must have a professionally responsive Army in the discharge of its constitutional roles, which was part of his vision. 
 
He stated that officers must be professional at all times, adding that soldiers must be responsive in the discharge of their duties. 
 
”We must conduct ourselves professionally and responsibly to tackle armed robbery and oil theft challenges to a logical conclusion which cuts across most part of the country,” he said. 
 
Buratai also said there were other challenges like administrative and welfare challenges which would also be taken care of. 
 
He commended the soldiers operating in the North-Eastern part of the country, saying they were doing well in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents. 
 
The Chief of Army Staff added that soldiers must embrace ”espirit de corps” and be their brothers’ keepers, stating that there must be a close cooperation with other security agencies. 
 
”You must work closely with the Nigeria Police, Department of State Security, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and so on,” he said.

An Aircraft, NAF 801, belonging to the Nigerian Air Force, has crashed in Hong, Adamawa State. 
 
The Director, Defence Information, Col. Abubakar Rabe, confirmed this to Channels Television. 
 
The plane was said to be returning from an interdicted mission when it went down due to bad weather.

Only the pilot is said to have died in the accident. 
 
The Chief of Air Staff has set up a panel to investigate the cause of the crash.

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has assured that the 8th Senate would put Nigeria first and also carry out a dilligent work regarding screening of the ministerial nominees by next Tuesday. 
 
Saraki gave the assurance in Ikenne home of the matriarch of Awolowo family, Chief HID Awolowo when he led a delegation of the Nigerian Senate on a condolence visit to the deceased’s children. 
 
Aside the Senate President, those in the delegation are Senator Lanre Tejuoso (Ogun Central), Senator Biodun Olujinmi (Ekiti state) among others. 
 
Saraki noted that Nigerians would have the opportunity of participating in the screening process from the comfort of their homes as the exercise would be broadcast live, adding that notwithstanding any relationship with nominees, Nigerians would come first in the spirit of the constitution. 
 
“We have said that for the 8th Senate, it is not going to be business as usual. What I can assure you is that we will go with the constitution, the rules, we will put Nigeria first.

“Screening will be done with level of seriousness and what we are all about is our constitutional responsibility to ensure that we find people who are fit enough to be Ministers and particularly this time, to give President Buhari the support he requires. 
 
“It is not about who you like or who you don’t like and I want to assure Nigerian that will not be the basis, it will be based on the constitution and based on ability and our own assessment of capacity of the nominees to perform. 
 
“And I assure you that individual differences would not be an issue at all, and we have spoken with Senators and told them that. 
 
“At this moment of time, we have made sure that as much as possible, we share with the public, we try to ensure that all will be covered live so that everybody can see, we will all be screening from our bedrooms and sitting rooms as well along with the Senators. 
 
“You’re rest assured that we will do a good job Nigerians would be proud of,” he said. 
 
And earlier while commiserating with Mama’s children at Efunyela Hall within the family home, the Senate President described the late HID Awolowo as a great person, an icon and mother for all. 
 
He said this informed why the Senate passed a resolution mandating a delegation to be led by the leadership to pay a condolence visit to the family 
 
Saraki said: “on Wednesday the eight Senate passed a resolution mandated us to come here and commiserate with Awolowo family, the good people of Ogun State and Nigeria in general on the loss of great person and an icon. 
 
“Normally, as our tradition, we send a delegation, but, for Mama she deserved this even more is for the entire Senate represented by the presiding officers to be here in person I lead that delegation. That is why I am here in person representing entire eight Senate. 
 
“The country, not the family that has lost a great person, she was a great person because since the death of Papa for so many years she continued the life of virtues and his dreams and she sustained over many years she showed that she was a uniting factor not only in South West, but, Nigeria in general. 
 
“I can say that, because just few months ago we were here during the period of our campaign and I don’t think there had been a campaign in this country that no politician will not stop here to pay respect and honour. 
 
“She earned that because we have many wives and mothers who after their husband passed out have not been able to sustain the dream, I think she has shown herself that in the entire country she is the only person that has been able to achieve that that is a great achievement. 
 
“As we mourn we also celebrate the great life she has lived. I remember when we were here we thought we would come to celebrate her 100 years but that shows that we must believe that were of the Almighty God. 
 
” It is not we that decide some of these things when they happen, but, she lived a great life, she is someone we should be proud of not only here but also in Nigeria I don’t see if there is any wife or mother in the entire country, wife of a leader or politician that does what she has done , some years after her husband has gone she continued to sustain the dreams. 
 
” Once again on behalf of the entire Senate I commiserate with the Awolowo family , the Ogun State people and Nigeria at large. The country has lost a great person and we have a lot to be proud of and with the faces I am seeing mama HID is coming, I think she deserves the honour.” 
 
In her redponse, Mama’s eldest daughter, Mrs Omotola Oyediran, commended the senate leadership for identifying with them. 
 
She disclosed that her mother’s final journey to be with the maker, would commence on the 15th of November when the body will be taken to Apapa home of the Awolowo’s in Lagos for an interdenominational thanksgiving. 
 
On the 16th, the body will also depart Lagos for Ibadan for another service before heading to Ikenne in Ogun State where service will be held before a private interment the same day November 25th.

 President Muhammadu Buhari has sacked his Presidential liaison Officer, Nura Rimi, few months after he was appointed into the post.

No reason was given for the president’s decision which has also not been officially announced. 
 
It was Alhaji Rimi who served as President Goodluck Jonathan’s Chief Protocol Officer was posted to Nigeria Embassy in Abu Dhabi shortly before the presidential Election but was recalled by President Buhari who appointed him as his PLO before his inauguration. 
 
His removal was effected last week, though no reason was given for his sudden disengagement from the Presidential Villa. 
 
He is a career civil servant who had served in high positions including Nigeria\’s embassy in the United States of America before he was posted to the presidential Villa as a Protocol officer where he served both President Umaru YarAdua and President Jonathan. 
 
During last visit to the United Nations General Assembly meeting in the United States of America, Alhaji Nura was with President Buhari entourage and facilitated most of the meetings that President Buhari attended in the sidelines of the UNGA. 
 
Since his swearing in, President Buhari has sacked some of his key aides including the CSO, Mani Abdulrahman and Widi Liman the Administrative Officer in the Presidential Villa. 
 
Repeated calls to the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity Femi Adeshina were unanswered as at the time of filing this report.
