The police in Louisiana has arrested an American advance fee fraudster posing as a Nigerian prince.

The police in a facebook post said the fake Nigerian prince has duped hundreds of people across America using emails. 
 
According to The Sacramento Bee anyone with an email address has likely gotten a message from the so-called Nigerian prince or two offering hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars in secret inheritances or, in some cases, payment for assistance laundering ill-gotten gains from mining conglomerates or royal treasuries. 
 
Police in Slidell, Louisiana, say they finally caught up with one of the people behind some of those emails. He’s not exactly Nigerian royalty, either, police wrote in a Facebook post. 
 
Michael Neu, 67, of Slidell, Louisiana, faces 269 counts of wire fraud and money laundering following an 18-month investigation, police wrote. They say Neu took part in hundreds of financial transactions involving phone and online scams to con money from people across the United States. 
 
In these scams, the supposed Nigerian prince (or other official) asks for the person’s personal banking information in order to speed the transfer of the purported inheritance or temporarily hold the allegedly pilfered funds. The information can then be used to withdraw funds from the victim’s accounts. 
 
While Neu might lack a royal title, at least some of the money obtained in his scams did go to co-conspirators in Nigeria, police wrote. Investigators are continuing to untangle Neu’s web of scams, but many other leads also connect to people outside the U.S., the post says. 
 
Police noted that while these kinds of emails are laughable to many people, authorities report millions of dollars in losses to such scams each year. 
 
“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is,” said Police Chief Randy Fandal in the Facebook post. “Never give out personal information over the phone, through e-mail, cash checks for other individuals, or wire large amounts of money to someone you don’t know. 99.9 percent of the time, it’s a scam.” 
 
Law enforcement agencies across the nation also are warning people of calls from scammers purporting to be police or court officials demanding payment via phone of bogus fines or warrants. Another version involves scammers claiming to be jailed relatives pleading for bail money, often targeting older people.

An unidentified middle-aged trader on Friday attempted to commit suicide by lying in front of the rare tyre of a truck to prevent authorities of the Cross River State Ministry of Environment from confiscating her goods worth N5, 000.

It was learnt that the incident, which happened in front of Oando Filling Station, opposite the back wing of the U.J Esuene Stadium in Calabar, attracted passers-by. 
 
A member of the task force in the ministry had threatened the petty trader over alleged violation of a new trading policy, which barred traders from displaying or erecting shops in opens spaces along major roads. 
 
But the trader, it was learnt, pulled the stunt when her source of livelihood was about to be taken away. 
 
The trader had publicly lamented that she preferred being crushed to death by the truck, than to allow the task force to take her means of livelihood. 
 
Items on the woman’s wares were items like biscuits and drinks. 
 
The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Mike Eraye, had in the last few weeks warned hawkers and roadside traders to desist from displaying their wares along major roads. 
 
The commissioner had specifically cautioned petty traders to relocate or face the consequences. 
 
However, the woman jumped under the parked truck, which was used by the task force to confiscate goods of erring traders, and started crying.

The Federal Government, through the Department of Petroleum Resources, has sealed over 62 petrol stations across the country.

The petrol stations were shut down due to varying acts of malpractices, including selling the Premium Motor Spirit, otherwise known as petrol, far above the N145 official price. 
 
Since fuel scarcity started nationwide some days before Christmas, several filling stations had started selling fuel as high as N300 per litre. 
 
Speaking to one of our correspondents, the Head of Operations, DPR, Kwara State, Mr. Oyedele Ibitayo, said the agency had sealed no fewer than 10 petrol stations in the state for varying acts of malpractices and infractions since the fuel crisis started. 
 
Ibitayo listed the petrol stations that allegedly flouted regulations to include Korrect Petroleum at Agbabiaka Road, Ilorin; Alhaji M. Oyetunji Petrol Station at Ajase; Golden Mother Petrol Station at Agbabiaka; Haflum Petrol Station at Babaoko; and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation retail outlet at Okoolowo. 
 
He stated that their offences ranged from under-delivery, over-pricing and product diversion. He added that one of the stations sold petrol as high as N250 per litre. 
 
Ibitayo said punishments meted out to the defaulters varied depending on their offence. 
 
He said while some were shut down for between two and six months, some were asked to pay a fine of N200,000 and sign an undertaking that they would not be involved in such sharp practices again. 
 
In Edo State, the DPR said it had sealed 23 petrol stations for indulging in sharp practices. 
 
This is just as the state Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Makinde Ayinla, said that the agency was collaborating with the DPR to check malpractices among the oil marketers. 
 
 
 
Three of the stations were sealed on Friday for dispensing fuel above the official price. 
 
One of the alleged erring stations, FU Alohan, located on Sapele Road in Benin, was shut down for selling a litre of petrol at N260. 
 
The state Operations Controller, DPR, Mr. Maynard Oriaifo, said that officials of the agency had been going round the state to ensure all filling stations sold petrol at N145. 
 
In Osun State, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Mr. Babawale Afolabi, told newsmen that so far, three filling stations had been sealed in the state. 
 
He added that marketers involved in hoarding fuel had been forced to sell the product to motorists and other consumers at the official price of N145. 
 
Likewise, in Katsina State, the Area Operations Manager, DPR, Mr. Yusuf Shehu, said the agency had sealed nine filing stations for alleged product diversion and selling fuel above N145. 
 
He said that the seal order on the affected filling stations would not be lifted until they served all the penalties meted to them, which he did not disclose. 
 
But, a DPR official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said some of the errant filling stations were asked to pay a fine of at least N200,000. 
 
In Enugu State, the DPR said it had sealed three petrol stations and arrested seven operators for sharp practices during the period of fuel scarcity.

The Head, Health, Safety and Environment Unit, DPR, Mr. Unyime Akpan, named the errant stations as Pipeline West Africa, Abakpa Nike; Raino Oil and Gas, Enugu-Onitsha Expressway; and NACO, Presidential Road, Independence Layout. 
 
He said that the stations had been forced to selling fuel at the official price. 
 
The DPR has also sealed six filing stations in Sokoto and Kebbi states, according to the agency’s Acting Controller, Sokoto Zone, Alhaji Nura Kamba. 
 
He said that while four were sealed in Sokoto State, two were in Kebbi State, adding that the errant stations had been asked to pay a fine of N100,000 per pump. 
 
It was a similar scenario in Kaduna State, where the DPR sealed three filing stations for hoarding over 17,000 litres of petrol. Speaking to journalists, the Executive Director, Services, Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company, Mallam Abdullahi Idris, and the Kaduna State Commander, NSCDC, said the erring stations had been forced to dispense fuel at the official price. 
 
The Comptroller, DPR, Bauchi State, Alhaji Garba Salihu, told newsmen that four filling stations had been sealed off in the state for selling petrol above the government-approved price of N145. 
 
“The stations were selling at N167; we have sealed them off,” he said, warning that the agency would stop at nothing to punish the errant oil marketers. 
 
In Plateau State, the Operations Manager of the DPR, Mr. Jeremiah Mashat, said the agency had only sealed off one filling station, which had been fined N200,000 for selling fuel above N145.

Med-View Airline passengers in London, on Friday, attacked the carrier’s members of staff at the Gatwick Airport after several Lagos-bound flights were cancelled, leaving them stranded for days. 
 
According to persecondnews.com, up to 800 passengers had been stranded at the Gatwick Airport for five days with dozens of them sleeping on the floor.

Some of the passengers were said to have accused the airline of abandoning them. 
 
Eyewitnesses said police were later called to the south terminal of the airport to maintain peace amid angry scenes as passengers took on airline officials. 
 
The airline’s Dubai- and London-bound passengers had on Thursday disrupted activities at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos following days of waiting to be airlifted to their destinations. 
 
Some of the passengers said they had been stranded for several days due to flight delays and cancellation. 
 
The aggrieved passengers were said to have gone to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s Consumer Protection Department desk to complain, alleging that the airline did not send any update through emails or text messages despite delaying some of them from travelling to London since December 24th. 
 
In a statement signed by its Accountable Manager, Mr. Michael Ajigbotosho, on Thursday, the airline said delayed flight operations out of Gatwick Airport, London on December 22, caused the problem as it created a backlog of passengers. 
 
He said the flight, VL 2101, London to Lagos on Friday, December 22, which had about 300 passengers on board, returned back to Gatwick after departure as a precautionary measure taken by the pilot in line with Aviation Standard and Recommended Practices. 
 
He added, “This led to cancellation of the flight as the aircraft was declared AOG (Aircraft On Ground). The passengers were catered for, they were lodged in a hotel and those who decided to go back home were also taken care of. 
 
“After the aircraft was declared AOG, we had to wait for a maintenance report. The aircraft had to remain on ground until a certified expert carries out the necessary checks and certify that the aircraft is airworthy. 
 
“So, the holiday compounded the problem. In line with that confirmation, we decided to seek for a relief flight and tried as much as possible go get the approval from both the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the CAA of United Kingdom in Gatwick. We attest to their full cooperation and we appreciate them.” 
 
He said the airline announced to operate three flights feeling the concern of all its passengers and on Wednesday, December 27, positioned three aircraft after securing the approval of the CAA. 
 
According to him, the three aeroplanes would have evacuated 700 passengers which would have normalised the situation. 
 
“But the passengers neither understood nor knew the challenges ahead, which resorted to having a delayed operation and the crew rested and we ended up operating two flights out of three,” he said. 
 
Ajigbotosho, while appealing for more understanding from passengers, had stated that normal flights would resume on Friday for the airline’s London, Dubai and Jeddah passengers.

The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, on Friday said the Federal Government have tamed the monster of fuel scarcity.

Baru in an interview with State House correspondents in Abuja also vowed that Nigerians will not go into 2018 with the scarcity of petroleum products. 
 
He blamed the fuel scarcity that marred the Christmas celebration to ”greedy marketers”, who he accused of hoarding petrol. 
 
According to him, any marketer found hoarding fuel or selling above the official price will be punished. 
 
“I’m happy to report that we have tamed the monster that reared its head as a result of the rumoured price increase about three weeks ago. 
 
“Unfortunately that rumour instigated a lot of marketers to be very greedy and they decided that their fellow citizens should not enjoy the Christmas holiday and New Year with ease and decided to profiteer starting by hoarding and diversion of products. 
 
“At the beginning I did address the press, telling the world that we have sufficient products that will last us 30 days through the New Year into January but because the marketers wanted to inflict harm and pains on fellow citizens, they decided to hoard products, divert them and in some cases even smuggled products out of the country. 
 
“This has been tamed by the actions we took and I personally led the war around Abuja and other teams led the war in Lagos and other parts of the country,’’ he said. 
 
The GMD noted that already the queues in the filling stations in Abuja had started disappearing, saying that normalcy would soon be restored in the distribution of the product. 
 
He said: “”As of this morning, I have gone round the Abuja metropolis and I have seen that the queues have reduced significantly to almost normal level and few motorists that I heard speaking on morning programmes concerning what I have seen said they have not spent up to 30 minutes to fuel their cars. 
 
 
 
““So the monster has been tamed in Lagos, the situation has been brought into normalcy as far as two days ago and we are also achieving the same thing in all other cities. 
 
“I promised that we have sufficient products that will last us for the next 30 days and we keep bringing in 50 per cent over and above our normal consumption into the country. 
 
““And vessels have been lined up, at the moment I have eight vessels discharging products at various ports around the country. 
 
“So Nigerians should enjoy the New Year and that Mr. President’s directive and guidance which has been very helpful has been executed and normalcy has returned.’’ 
 
He advised those marketers that had hidden the products in odd locations to better bring them out and sell to the public at N145 per litre, saying,” “if NNPC sold it to you at N133.28, you have sufficient margin within that ambit to be able to supply and sell to the public at maximum N145 per litre.’’ 
 
According to him, the NNPC filling stations are selling the product at N143 per litre. 
 
He warned that any marketer caught selling above the official price of N145 per litre would be sanctioned appropriately by the regulator, DPR and PPPRA with the support of law enforcement agencies. 
 
He said the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), would make sure that the products were confiscated and given free to the public. 
 
“This is the directive that we are working on by Mr. President and is being executed to the later. Bring them out and sell these products, we don’t have any shortage and we are making massive loadings. 
 
“Normally we should be able to have 850 trucks to satisfy the National consumption but as at yesterday (Dec. 28) we loaded 1,750 trucks to go around the country. 
 
“So we will continue massive load out until we reach the former position whereby all the stations will have products and truck siding,’’ he added.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government not to issue any New Year promises to Nigerians since they have not fulfilled any of the promises contained in their previous messages since assumption of office.

“What seriousness should any Nigerian attach to a government that takes governance for granted, puts off its Federal Executive Meeting meeting at the slightest whims and blame imaginary invasion of its offices by rats for the inability to meet required statutory functions?”

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to ensure the pump price of fuel is not increased above N145 per litre.

“NNPC is selling at N143 per litre, so you should be able to sell at N145 per litre. If you go above that, the regulator, DPR and PPPRA, with the support of law enforcement agencies, particularly the Civil Defence, will make sure that the products are confiscated and given free to the public. 
 
“This is the directive from Mr. President that we are working on and is being executed to the letter. 
 
“Bring these products out and sell. We don’t have any shortage and we are making massive loadings. 
 
“Normally, we should be able to have 850 trucks to satisfy national consumption, but as at yesterday, we loaded 1,750 trucks to go round the country. So we will continue massive loading until we reach the former position whereby all the stations will have products and truck siding.” 
 
On the legal actions to be taken against errant marketers, he said: “We have met with the law enforcement agencies, particularly the Civil Defence who have helped us to mop up the people selling in Jerry cans and have also helped us to mop out some of the cars that have extra tanks in Abuja and environs and around the country. 
 
“The legal action is to apprehend the culprits first and then take them to the courts within the time limit that is speculated.” 
 
Asked about subsidy, he said: “Do you want me to remove subsidy? What I am saying is that the landing cost as should be sold in the pump without under-recovery should be N171.40. 
 
“However, Mr. President has directed that we should maintain all the parameters to ensure that it is sold at N145 per litre. And that is why we are selling at depot at N133.28.”
