Alleged threats against Wike: PDP vows to leave nothing to chance

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the outburst by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government that it would have dragged in Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, but for his constitutional immunity, confirms the fears that government wants to silence the opposition.

PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, condemned what it described as “in very strong terms, the further threats against Governor Wike by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who arrogantly dismissed the governor’s allegation that there was a plot by the Federal Government to kill him in a crowd.” 
 
The statement said the APC party resorted to scare tactics against Governor Wike instead of launching an investigation into the alarm the Governor raised about his life being in danger. 
 
PDP however called on both Nigerians and the international community to be wary of the alleged threat to Wike’s life and what it described as the carefree attitude of the ruling party. 
 
The statement partly reads thus: 
 
It is shocking that instead of calling for an investigation into the serious revelation, the Federal Government resorted to siege mentality to scare the governor, ostensibly to cover up the severity of the allegation. 
 
Nigerians will recall that the PDP had earlier raised the alarm over plots to harass, intimidate, implicate and orchestrate untoward situations like assassinations, unexplained accidents, inexplicable “armed robbery” attacks, high profile abduction and sudden disappearances of opposition leaders and members. 
 
The PDP, therefore, invites all Nigerians and the international community to note this threat against Governor Wike, as well as the action and inaction of the APC-led Federal Government, as we are not prepared to leave anything to chance.</div>

Women lawmakers in the country have pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to concede the slot of the Vice President to them in subsequent elections in the country.

The female lawmakers made the statement on Friday when they paid a courtesy call on President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. 
 
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, which comprised elected lawmakers from the nation’s 36 states, the leader of the delegation, Hon. Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie said Nigerian Women were being marginalised by their male counterparts. 
 
She said the country only had one principal officer in each of the two chambers of the National Assembly since the return to democracy in 1999. 
 
She also told Mr Buhari that as the president, anything he said at the gathering “will become policy and subsequently law.” 
 
To this end, she said “whenever the president is a man, the Vice President should be a woman.” 
 
Mrs. Ativie also said for every three senatorial seats in the states, one should be a woman. She also said “where there are nine House of Reps members, the men should take six and leave three for women.” 
 
Responding, President Buhari jokingly said “it is a pity that the Vice President is not here, but I am sure the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will brief him that his position is threatened.” 
 
Mr Buhari however appreciated the support given to him by women generally in the four times he ran for president. 
 
He recalled reports he received during elections in which women in Labour queued to vote for him. 
 
He asked the delegation to take a message to their colleagues to extend the same support since he has declared to seek for second term. 
 
On their request, the president simply told the gathering that he is not “as powerful as you think.” 
 
He said such requests could only be made by a military head of state, but, he has today dropped the uniform for “agbada”.</div>

The trial of a former National Publicity of the Peoples Democratic, Olisa Metuh, proceeded before the Federal High Court in Abuja in his absence and that of his lawyers on Friday.

Metuh had, since his fall in court on Monday, been absent from the trial. 
 
His lawyer, Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), who had since been appearing for him, did not attend the Thursday and Friday proceedings without any explanation offered for his absence. 
 
No lawyer in the defendant’s defence team led by Etiaba and another Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu, attended the Thursday and Friday proceedings. 
 
Justice Okon Abang was forced to adjourn on Thursday due to the absence of legal representation for Metuh on Thursday. 
 
But on Friday, the judge ordered the continuation of the trial after overruling an objection to the application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s lawyer, Mr. Sylvanus Tahir, for the trial to proceed in the absence of Metuh and his lawyers. 
 
The objection was raised by Mr. Tochukwu Onwugbufor (SAN), the counsel for Metuh’s co-accused, Destra Investment Limited, who had argued that the law never envisaged that a criminal trial would ever be conducted behind a defendant and his counsel. 
 
But in dismissing the objection, Justice Abang ruled that although the court had ruled that the matter would proceed in Metuh’s absence, the absence of the defence team was designed to frustrate the trial. 
 
The judge explained that the court did not bar Metuh from the proceedings but only held that “the trial will proceeding in his absence” due to what the court described as the defendant’s ‎”misconduct” in court on Monday.</div>

As Nigerian football fans warm up to watch live friendly football match between Super Eagles and the football team from the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, Nigerian medical doctors have expressed divergent views over the match following the outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease in the central African country.

While some say, there is no cause for alarm, some of the doctors called for stringent precautionary measures to avoid the mistake of the past. 
 
In the views of a professor of Medicine and Endocrinology at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, Prof. Olufemi Fasamade said there is no cause for alarm as the likelihood of bringing the virus to country was low. 
 
According to Fasamade, Ebola is a condition easily suspected and vigilant port health authorities can screen and isolate ill people at the ports. 
 
He explained that at risk people can also be identified by simply administering a questionnaire too. 
 
“So there should be no panic or fear. Ebola is endemic in that country like Lassa fever is endemic in ours and Zika fever in others, he explained. 
 
However, expressing divergent views, the Chairman Medical Guild, Dr Saheed Babajide who urged the Federal government to demand for the  health status of the team and also authentic the report here in Nigeria before the team is allowed into the country. 
 
According to Saheed, it would be disastrous if Nigeria should repeat the mistake of the past. 
 
“Even after authenticating the results, as the team is landing at the airport, there should be comprehensive screening of the team again.  The government should look beyond the diplomatic problem, but consider the risk that will come out of it if anyone of them is infected and a single Nigeria contract it. 
 
“If it were in developed countries like the United State they will not even allow them to come but because we are Africans, in the spirit of oneness, we should test all of them before the commencement of the match.” 
 
He further lamented that even in the health facilities Nigeria was not proactive in terms of prevention.  “What is on ground? By now, with the 2014 experience, Nigeria would have build Infectious disease hospitals at least in all the six geopolitical zones.  But we are waiting for it to happen first. 
 
“When you go to different public hospitals, all the precautionary measures are not available in the hospitals. We should have free running tap water, disposable cloves, face masks, needles and other consumables but these things are not available. Government at all level should sit down and map out strategies on how to prevent Ebola or any other infectious disease by making sure the borders and hospitals are safe.”</div>
