Ekiti 2018: Jonathan warns Buhari against subverting the will of Ekiti people

 A former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against deploying Federal might to subvert the will of the people in the July 14 governorship election in favour of his party, the All Progressives Congress(APC).

Jonathan said the will of the people must be allowed to stand at all times, because power belongs to them and we must respect their verdict through the ballots”, he advised. Jonathan also told President Buhari to stop labeling Nigerian youth as being lazy, urging him to stop using Nigeria as a bad example of a failed nation at the international scene. 
 
The former number one citizen , also praised the people of Ekiti State for their supports tor the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), urging them to support the youthful team put up to succeed Governor Ayodele Fayose in the gubernatorial election. 
 
 He was referring to the youthful PDP governorship candidate, Prof Kolapo Olusola and his running mate, Mr. Deji Ogunsakin. Speaking while inaugurating the 1.2 kilometres long flyover built by Fayose in Ado Ekiti Friday evening , Jonathan described Fayose as an exemplary leader and loyal party man, who has done the PDP proud in all facets. He said: “ I don’t believe anybody can defeat the PDP in Ekiti if election is going to be held. 
 
I want to advise President Buhari not to deploy power to truncate Ekiti election. “Though as a president, you have the power but don’t do that becaue of posterity. History will record whatever you do and the power of a leader is determined after leaving office and not when he is in the office. 
 
On the statement credited to President Buhari that Nigerian youths are slothful, Jonathan retorted: “Nigerians youth are not lazy, I don’t believe that, because I have worked with them closely. They are great people with great potentials who should be celebrated by any leader. “As leaders, we must make sure we present a country that will make us proud and not to use our country as a negative example in Africa to the outside world. “The idea of portraying Nigerians negative manners had occurred on two occasions under this present government. 
 
These are mistakes we should not make. “I want to thank you for your supports for the PDP since 2015 and we expect you to do more in the coming governorship election” Speaking further, Jonathan added: “Fayose will never compromise the interest of Ekiti people for anything . He is a leader who speaks truth to power, in fact Fayose is a leader and he has done well for his people. Speaking on education, Jonathan said: “Any leader who wants to encourage his people must encourage the education of the youth. If you don’t encourage the youths, they will be exploited . 
 
“As youths, you have to be aware that we are operating a knowledge based economy, so you must be proficient in the use of computer, this you can’t compromise if you want to fit into the 21st century economy. “At a time, Ekiti was becoming low in ranking in education, we were surprised but through effective leadership of Ayodele Fayose, there was improvement”.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has come under heavy attacks from Nigerians over his failure to withdraw policemen attached to some ‘very important persons’, especially politicians and other private-sector players, who are not constitutionally entitled to have policemen as aides.

It was gathered on Saturday that thousands of policemen were still guarding former political office holders, including ex-senators, former governors, and ex-House of Representatives members, as well as businessmen who were enjoying police protection at the expense of the public. 
 
 
 
The IG had announced the withdrawal of the policemen on March 19 and gave April 20 as the deadline, but checks showed that the majority of the personnel had yet to return to their respective commands, a month after the deadline expired. 
 
The announcement followed a disclosure that about 80 per cent of policemen were working as security guards to prominent Nigerians. 
 
Apart from those attached to politicians and other VIPs, our correspondent learnt that many zonal commands and formations had surpluses of policemen who were not engaged in core policing duties. 
 
A source explained that each of the 36 state governors also had at least 200 policemen attached to them. 
 
One of our correspondents further gathered that many policemen on duty at police colleges in Lagos, Jos, Enugu, Kano, and in other police institutions across the country, are redundant as they don’t perform core policing duties. 
 
On why the IG did not withdraw the policemen from the VIPs, a senior officer said, “The IG would not withdraw the policemen from VIPs because he doesn’t want to be blamed in case something untoward happens to any of them. That is why he said the VIPs should revalidate,” the officer explained. 
 
But security experts and a civil rights group condemned the IG for failing to withdraw the policemen from individuals who are not entitled to them, describing it as unfortunate. 
 
The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights described the non-withdrawal of police escorts from VIPs as unfortunate, alleging that the police authorities and individuals made money from such postings.

Meanwhile, the police authorities said they had withdrawn policemen attached to VIPs and other individuals not constitutionally entitled to police personnel. 
 
The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Jimoh Moshood, said the police orderlies had been withdrawn from those who were not entitled to them, noting that some of them were redeployed to various patrol and investigation units. 
 
He could however not provide the number of withdrawn personnel adding that the figures were still being collated. 
 
“We have withdrawn the policemen from those who are not entitled to them, but I cannot give you the number of those that have been withdrawn now because the figure is still being collated nationwide,” Moshood said on Saturday.

 Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is already preparing for the 2019 presidential race with the acquisition of a massive office complex in Abuja for his campaign. 
 
According to The Nation newspaper, the five storey building is located on Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent at the intersection of Wuse and Maitama areas of the Federal Capital Territory.

Multiple sources familiar with the development said serious action on Atiku’s presidential ambition should be expected once the Ramadan is over. 
 
Sources also said Atiku’s supporters are currently holding informal but high-powered meetings in Dubai and Saudi Arabia on how to actualize his ambition. 
 
Atiku hopes to seek the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after dumping the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). 
 
His supporters are said to be preparing for the kick-off of a massive mobilization and campaign by the end of next month. 
 
Atiku’s Media Adviser, Mr. Paul Ibe, when contacted said he had no information about the building in question. 
 
“Where I am operating from now is the Atiku Media Office; eventually, we would have to get a building for that (campaign) purpose but I am not yet aware of any in the place that you described,” Ibe stated.

Nigerians travel-ling overseas can now heave a sigh of relief following the release of new Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directives that make it much easier for people in this category to access foreign exchange for their travelling needs.

A statement Saturday night by the apex bank’s Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Isaac Okoroafor, stated that in a bid to ensure that eligible travelers are able to access foreign currency and make liquidity available in the market, the CBN had issued the following instructions to banks: 
 
“All Deposit Money Banks are mandated to buy and sell foreign currency to travelers (both customers and non-customers) upon presentation of relevant valid travel documents such as visa and tickets over the counter. All travelers shall be attended to immediately at the bank’s counters. Any contravention will be sanctioned by the CBN. 
 
“All Bureaux de Change (BDCs) shall henceforth access dollars from the CBN on Monday’s, Wednesdays and Fridays. It is compulsory that all BDCs access currency at least three times weekly.” 
 
The statement warned that BDCs that failed to access the FX window at least three times weekly would have their licenses reviewed by the CBN – emphasizing that compliance with the new directive was compulsory.

Popular singer, Daniel Anidugbe, formerly known as Kiss Daniel, has changed his name to Kizz Daniel. The singer made this known in an Instagram post during the week. He had put up a picture of the new name with the caption, “Moving forward. Call me Kizz Daniel.”

Shortly after Daniel made the post, several blogs reported that with the move, the singer was now free of all obligations to his former label, G-Worldwide Entertainment. 
 
However, in a chat with newsmen, Daniel’s former manager, Louiza Williams, stated that the singer’s recent action had no effect on the court case. 
 
“I actually did not know that he had changed his name until you told me. However, there is no big deal about that; it has nothing to do with the case,” said the musician’s ex-manager. 
 
“The next court date is June 26. It is not true that the case has been settled; so, I don’t know where all those reports came from. If there was anything like that, I would be aware of it. Though Kizz Daniel doesn’t come to court personally, his lawyers appear on his behalf and I am sure they pass relevant information across to him accordingly. The court ruled that both parties should maintain the status quo, but Kizz Daniel is doing what is best known to him, which is contrary to what the court ordered.” 
 
On what move G-Worldwide is considering, Williams said, “The company definitely has a plan but I cannot reveal anything for now.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has challenged security agencies, families, traditional and religious leaders to take decisive actions to stem the rising cases of violence against children as he also gave an update on the school feeding programme of his administration.

In his message to mark this year’s Children’s Day, Buhari said that at the last count, over 8.2 million children in 24 states were being given free meals daily, adding that this happened in 45,000 schools round the country. 
 
The president called on all stakeholders to support the programme to ensure that all the 36 states and FCT were covered. 
 
He noted that the theme for this year’s celebration “Creating Safe Spaces for Children: Our Collective Responsibility” was an opportunity to promote the safety and security of the children. 
 
He said that all stakeholders, including the Civil Society Organisations, Human Rights Activists, and the society at large, must ensure safety of the children in homes, schools, markets, worship centres, on the streets and everywhere at all times. 
 
According to him, this year’s event affords him another opportunity to re-affirm his administration’s commitment to the protection of children. 
 
“”This is a day to reflect on our roles and responsibilities as parents and leaders towards our children, and also assessing how far we have fared in this regard. 
 
“”As you may recall, one of the cardinal objectives of this administration is the provision of quality education to our children as a fundamental foundation of economic and social development. 
 
“”In this regard, I am pleased to inform you that this administration has recorded measurable success in the home grown school feeding programme as it has continued to expand,’’ he added. 
 
The president maintained children were the future of the nation, and “the initiatives that come from them give confidence that Nigeria has a bright future. 
 
 
 
He said: “”I am very impressed by what our children have been able to do, and what the future holds for them. 
 
“”That is one reason why we are committed to the school feeding programme, to prepare a future generation of physically and intellectually robust children.” 
 
He said this would promote substantially higher enrolment levels in schools across the country. 
 
He also appealed to parents not to relent in their efforts to send their wards to school, especially the girl child “as her education reduces infant and maternal mortality as well as prevents child marriages. 
 
““It also increases literacy and reduces poverty. The saying that to educate a woman is to educate the nation is very apt in this regard.’’ 
 
He noted that since the inception of his administration in May, 2015, the Federal Government had also focused attention on addressing issues of child protection, participation and survival. 
 
He observed that in 2015, the campaign to end violence against children was inaugurated which was commemorated in 2016. 
 
“”In November 2016, the Campaign to End Child Marriage was also launched to ensure that as many children as possible are able to fully enjoy their childhood and be protected from all the challenges associated with this phenomenon. 
 
“”These campaigns have been reinforced with sensitization campaigns in some states of the federation,’’ he added. 
 
He reassured that his administration was committed to ensuring that children were protected from violence and all forms of exploitations. 
 
President Buhari said the government would guarantee friendly environments for the children to enable them pursue their educational attainments, discover their full potentials to grow into responsible citizens. 
 
He said: “”This Administration has made giant strides in the protection of the Rights of the Nigerian Child and as a result of such efforts, Nigeria has been declared a Path-finding Country on Ending Violence Against Children. 
 
““This I believe is a collective achievement and I urge us to continue to build on the present momentum to achieve the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” 
 
He said that as part of efforts to protect the children from abuse and trafficking, the government had directed the management of Federal Government Colleges and advised all state owned schools to provide adequate measures of safety and security of their students 
 
He also called on all schools management committees at all levels of public and private institutions to take adequate security measures and put in place mechanisms for safety of children. 
 
President Buhari expressed appreciation to the security agencies for their efforts so far, and urged them to redouble their efforts in protecting children from danger and violence in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution and Child Rights Acts, 2003.
