19 Nigerians arrested in Kenya for fraud

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="300" data-original-width="400" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvucV2qKDPxphTpDrqFG-glF413MfsZdhgx1CMmP77LiGPVknb23EBm4FaPXHk1gkYEqRt8b5MN4JAtfE_mBHqYQIzGXQ2T9ipxFhxVV-lr8idGLcv0Z2SBYfu3I58SfrQWQEnphqJsbtd/s400/ken.jpg" width="400" /></div> <br /> The Kenya Police yesterday arrested 19 Nigerians residing in Nairobi for alleged involvement in electronic fraud, Standard newspaper of Kenya reported.<br /> <br /> <a id="more" name="more"></a><br /> <br /> The suspects were arrested in Umoja, Kasarani and Roysambu Estates within Nairobi for engaging in electronic fraud targeting Kenyans.<br /> <br /> Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti said the suspects targeted their victims through the social media before they embarked on lying to them.<br /> <br /> “The fraudsters start by befriending you on social media (Facebook) and once you accept the friend request they initiate a friendly chat that promises the victim goodies to be sent through DHL at the airport,” he said.<br /> <br /> “The following day a call will be made and someone will pretend to be an attendant at the DHL office.<br /> <br /> “They will tell the victim to pay clearance fees for the same parcel they claim to have sent to a person.<br /> <br /> “Immediately you send the money through Mpesa another call is made requesting for some more money for other documentation and taxes.<br /> <br /> ”After paying the dues demanded, your calls demanding for your parcel will not be picked. That is the time you realise that you have been conned. This is therefore to warn members of the general public against such fraudsters.”<br /> <br /> The swoop followed a barrage of complaints filed with police over the incidents. One victim told police he had been promised an Iphone.<br /> <br /> He paid Sh70,000 for the gadget.<br /> <br /> During the swoop, several electronic gadgets were recovered from the suspects’ houses.<br /> <br /> Some of the suspects had come to Nairobi as students and as businessmen.

It reminds me of some of the equipment created or repurposed by children in the U.S. Before little league came along.”<br /> <br /> Very few players in the Ekiti Kete Little League have gloves and other equipment, so after receiving Philip’s glove, little league international sent him back a brand-new Easton glove to replace the one he provided to the museum.

For the very first time in the history of our nation, citizens of Nigeria know when elections will take place; one year in advance. It has never happened before.<br /> <br /> “Secondly, for the very first time in the history of our country citizens know the budget of the electoral commission. (Election) budget has never been defended before the National Assembly, as citizens know line by line how much the commission proposed; what the money is going to be spent on. I think I am very happy with this process.”<br /> <br /> Asked if he was not worried about the delay in passing the budget proposal, the INEC chairman said: “well, we have made the clarification that the National Assembly asked for, and I am happy that the National Assembly and the two committees on INEC expressed satisfaction on the clarification that we made on the matter of appropriation.<br /> <br /> “So we look forward to hearing what the National Assembly will say.”<br /> <br /> He said there are no discrepancies in the budget figures before the National Assembly. On the voters’ registration extension, the INEC boss said: “we started the continuous voters’ registration exercise on April 27, 2017, as provided for in our constitution, registering voters consistently in the last 16 months.<br /> <br /> “In response to appeals by Nigerians, we have created more centres for the registration but finally decided that we should suspend the process as provided for by the law, six months to the elections.<br /> <br /> “But again in response to appeals by Nigerians, we have now extended to the end of the month. As at Saturday last week, we had registered 12.1 million citizens. This (figure) will eventually be added to the 70 million voters that are already registered for the 2019 general elections. We have voters register of over 80 million citizens.”<br /> <br /> He said that the extended registration is going to take place between 9a.m and 5pm daily, but excluding the Eid El Kabir holidays.<br /> <br /> He said that the end of the second voters registration exercise on August 31 does not mean the end of the collection of PVCs.<br /> <br /> “Collection of PVCs will continue until at least one week to the general election in February 2019,” he said<br /> <br /> Asked what brought him to the villa, he said “It has nothing to do with our national politics. Recall that in March 2016, I was elected the President of ECOWAS network of electoral commission.<br /> <br /> “In that capacity recently, we undertook a NEEDS assessment visit to the Republic of Guinea-Bissau and part of what they requested of Nigeria, is assistance with voters’ registration kits.<br /> <br /> “They want to start the voters registration on the 23rd of this month but they are relying on Nigeria to provide the assistance.<br /> <br /> “That is why I came and had a meeting with Ambassador Lawal who is the senior special assistant to the president on foreign affairs to facilitate Nigeria’s electoral assistance to Guinea-Bissau.<br /> <br /> “It is important to do so because you should also remember that for several years now, Nigeria has had troops in Guinea-Bissau to stabilize the country and that stability is dependent upon the conduct of proper elections.”

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="944" data-original-width="1441" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaUDvgkrbg3Vj1-3I8t6tgD15hb24HAfwGkYTblRTilHgnXK1JWWqt1_PjpyWlgbSJx7sXfpKTgvhOAKr6EzzqOCl2hEB26LlHnhlHX5_xlpDZHZER6ow-Pf5N4pl03ZDB4UJd9mlaIiPH/s400/wike1.jpg" width="400" /></div> <br /> Heavy gunshots, thuggery, violence and snatching of electoral materials marred yesterday’s bye-election for Port Harcourt Constituency 3 in the Rivers State House of Assembly.<br /> <br /> <a id="more" name="more"></a><br /> <br /> Soldiers, policemen and other security personnel forced residents to raise their hands on the streets of Port Harcourt, the state capital, where the election took place.<br /> <br /> The Resident Electoral Commissioner Obo Effanga in a statement said “As a result of widespread and wanton disruption of the electoral process reported,” the elections have been suspended.<br /> <br /> Thugs operated freely despite Rivers Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Zaki’s announcement that 1,500 policemen would be deployed for the poll with the Nigerian army, Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCSC) also enlisted.<br /> <br /> They unleashed mayhem, beating innocent persons many of whom were critically injured.<br /> <br /> As at press time, collation of results was ongoing at St. Andrew’s Primary School, Emenike Junction Mile One, Diobu, Port- Harcourt with the area and adjoining roads condoned off by fully-armed security personnel.<br /> <br /> Candidates of many political parties took part in the bye-election, but the real contest was between Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) ChiemekaMerukini and All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s) Mr. Deacon Worlu.<br /> <br /> The then representative of Port Harcourt constituency 3, Victor Ihunwo of the PDP, resigned in June to contest as Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, which he won.<br /> <br /> The poll took place in Rumuokowu, Ihuwo-Orogbu, Rumuokara-mati, Rumuelechi, Oro-obaziolu, Rumu-enyika, Rumuopareli, Rumuobiekwe, Rumukpalukwuozu, Rumuogbarawehu and Rumuwoji communities, all in Port Harcourt with police announcing restriction human and vehicular movements from 7 am to 6 pm, which was enforced by security personnel.<br /> <br /> There were accusations and counter accusations between members of PDP and APC about persons involved in the violence.<br /> <br /> Rivers Publicity Secretary of APC, Chief Chris Finebone, blamed PDP members for the violent acts.<br /> <br /> He said: “The Rivers chapter of APC notes with sadness how the PDP resorted to large-scale violence across the units and wards of Port Harcourt Constituency 3, state House of Assembly, during the bye-election today (yesterday).<br /> <br /> “It is unfortunate that what should be a mere state constituency bye-election witnessed unprecedented voter intimidation, harassment, vote-buying and shooting activated by the PDP, in line with their usual character of rigging elections through killing and maiming of APC members.<br /> <br /> “It is encouraging that the people of Port Harcourt constituency 3 stood their ground and resisted the intimidation by PDP leaders in the area. It signifies that PDP will no more have its way, as was the case in the past years.<br /> <br /> “The talk that the Rivers State Chairman of APC, Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, was engaged in any form of activity in the constituency during the election is mere façade created to mask the evil machinations of the PDP during the bye-election.”<br /> <br /> Pastor Jerry Needam, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Rivers Chairman of PDP, Chief Felix Obuah, however didn’t respond to calls and text messages to his MTN line as at the time of filing the report.<br /> <br /> Rivers Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), also did not answer calls from 6:30 pm while text sent to the same line at 6:37 pm had not been replied as at press time.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3JQI1745H9Hxx-f5c0kNykPBB9RNBDG5KZwyIHLWfJh5qIB5RFvcfOMHHDheWRrT_NLiGWvnlHz85fkjvMgyp-vTIkRqWfK2y90-HdrFdhEeYpR0pc6oJixNM37cbzvlK0Kl9lGMl_Wzt/s1600/PDP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="339" data-original-width="336" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3JQI1745H9Hxx-f5c0kNykPBB9RNBDG5KZwyIHLWfJh5qIB5RFvcfOMHHDheWRrT_NLiGWvnlHz85fkjvMgyp-vTIkRqWfK2y90-HdrFdhEeYpR0pc6oJixNM37cbzvlK0Kl9lGMl_Wzt/s320/PDP.jpg" width="317" /></a></div> <br /> Big guns in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are canvassing consensus for the purpose of picking the party’s presidential candidate in next year’s election to avoid a post-primary crisis.<br /> <a id="more" name="more"></a><br /> <br /> The promoters of the consensus arrangement see it as the “only veritable option” open to the party in view of the huge number of members who have already indicated interest in the party’s presidential ticket.<br /> <br /> There are 11 at the last count.<br /> <br /> They include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State; Governor Ibrahim Dankwabo of Gombe State; a former Special Duties Minister, Tanimu Turaki; and a former Governor of Kaduna State, Senator Ahmed Makarfi.<br /> <br /> Also in the running are two former governors of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau; former Governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa; former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido; and an industrialist, Dr. Baba Datti Ahmed.<br /> <br /> Senate President Bukola Saraki said on Tuesday that he is “consulting and actively considering” joining the race.<br /> <br /> The PDP has picked October 5 and 6 for its national convention to decide who will fly its flag in the February 16, 2019 election.<br /> <br /> But some top members of the party fear that the large number of those seeking the PDP presidential ticket may spell doom for it.<br /> <br /> They are worried that a primary contest could throw the party into a fratricidal conflict, the end of which may be difficult to predict.<br /> <br /> A similar crisis erupted in the PDP soon after it lost the 2015 elections, leading to the emergence of two factions.<br /> <br /> The matter went as far as the Supreme Court which ruled in favour of the Senator Makarfi’s faction.<br /> <br /> The push for a consensus candidate, it was learnt, has gained momentum among members of the National Working Committee (NWC) who are said to be wary of the backlashes a proper primary might cause the party.<br /> <br /> This was after chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party, Walid Jibrin, expressed concerns over the number of presidential aspirants within the PDP about three weeks ago.<br /> <br /> He said: “Efforts are on ground by BoT to bring all the PDP presidential aspirants together to consider how best they should accept one of them to stand, realising that despite their number, only one person will emerge as a candidate during the primaries and also only one person will emerge as the president of Nigeria.<br /> <br /> “We have men and women of honour in the BoT that will never sell their conscience, and ensure that the best will come out of the presidential aspirant without fear and favour.”<br /> <br /> He urged all organs of the party to “partner with BoT in this respect.”<br /> <br /> He also asked all members of PDP to “remain calm and resolute by remaining unshaken with the belief that PDP will take over government at the federal and states with majority of our members in national assembly and state assemblies.”<br /> <br /> It was learnt that some of the presidential aspirants may not be serious after all, and that they may be only interested in attracting attention to themselves.<br /> <br /> Highly placed party sources said some of the aspirants would not mind other elective offices if persuaded given the “fact that even a political student knows they cannot win as little as three millions nationwide.”<br /> <br /> There is also the theory that some of them may have been planted by the APC to weaken PDP base ahead of the 2019 elections.<br /> <br /> One of the sources, a NWC member said: “We are very sad with the large number of presidential aspirants we have. You could argue it should be a blessing but it means we have stormy days ahead considering the chances of post-primary crisis.<br /> <br /> “It is even more worrisome that some of our heavyweight aspirants have opted for the presidential race. We would have been happy if some were in the senatorial race or what have you.<br /> <br /> “As it is now, there must be a consensus for us to be sure of winning. It is obvious we cannot win with the array of materials contesting for our presidential ticket.”<br /> <br /> Another highly-placed party official said: “the APC is already settled which gives them a head start with Buhari guaranteed the ticket.<br /> <br /> “We cannot afford to lose time and resources with the primary. By the time we are ready settling disputes and appeals, we would have lost valuable space to regain lost grounds.<br /> <br /> “So, the consensus option appears the way to go though we have worries whether or not it might sit well with the aspirants.”<br /> <br /> Asked if it could be misinterpreted as imposition considering the status of the aspirants involved, the source said: “well, we plan to make it as rancour-free as possible. Yes, one or two of them might kick or even leave but it would have saved us from needless headaches and battles.”<br /> <br /> It was gathered that some PDP chieftains are also bothered that the overcrowded presidential field may have been induced by the APC to weaken its fold.<br /> <br /> “In politics, you don’t rule out anything. Some of these aspirants recently defected and want us to entrust the PDP most valuable ticket to them.<br /> <br /> “It is not out of place to think some of them might have been moles planted to deplete our strength and distract us with battles in the primary.<br /> <br /> “We have to win this election because it is so important to the party’s survival. So we are not taking chances at all,” another party stalwart told our correspondent.<br /> <br /> Investigations revealed the convention may just be an affirmative exercise for the consensus candidate while other primaries would go on as scheduled.<br /> <br /> But there are concerns the aspirants might kick against the consensus option because of the belief that they could be outwitted.<br /> <br /> A chieftain said: “many of them don’t even know what is at stake. This is not the time to engage in a needless popularity contest. We have to be calculated and organised to stand a chance because this is the first election we are contesting at the federal level as an opposition party.<br /> <br /> “Yes, they might kick but we would let them see that the party’s interest is more important. I mean if the party becomes weak, will they be able to vie for its presidential ticket again?”
