People always talk about it.<br /> <br /> <br /> “It is not difficult to find a wife; there are many beautiful women out there. It is not like I am ready; I am not the perfect version of what I would like to be to my wife and family.<br /> <br /> <br /> “I want to work on myself until I am ready. By the time I am ready, if someone still wants to be with me, that would be great.<br /> <a id="more" name="more"></a><br /> <br /> <br /> “It is not like I am looking for a wife and cannot find one. There are lots of nice and beautiful ladies out there. I don’t think I am there yet. I am not in a hurry.<br /> <br /> <br /> “If time passes and nobody wants to marry me, then so be it but for now, I don’t feel I have worked on myself enough.<br /> <br /> <br /> “I don’t want a scenario where I would get married and my music or business would take me away and the next thing would be that my wife would start complaining that I am hardly around. We are satisfied with what the electorate voluntarily gave us.”<br /> <br /> Issa-Onilu said Buhari won the 2019 presidential election on the strength of his performance in the last four years.<br /> <br /> He said the President demonstrated courage to choose to face other contestants in a level playing field.<br /> <br /> Under Buhari, he said Nigeria reached new heights in democracy.<br /> <br /> According to Issa-Onilu, the ruling party does not need the support of the Peoples Democratic Party to elect presiding officers of the National Assembly.<br /> <br /> He said, “As a party in the majority in the two chambers, the APC does not require the support of the PDP to elect the Senate President, Speaker and the other principal officers.<br /> <br /> “This is just as the PDP does not require the support of the APC to elect the minority leaders and other positions that belong to the minority party. This is the convention.”<br /> <br /> The spokesman said the position taken by the APC on the leadership of the 9th National Assembly was in line with international democratic practice.<br /> <br /> He added, “They are in the National Assembly to help the ruling party deliver on its mandate. APC lawmakers are the legislative arm of the APC.<br /> <br /> “We have the majority members in both the Senate and House of Representatives. They automatically produce, and not elect, the leaders of the two chambers.<br /> <br /> “The rule allows for a simple majority and the APC has that already. You may need to ask those who are posting unfounded opinions about this issue when did they see the Democrats and Republicans in the United States’ congress conducting elections as a unit to choose leaders?<br /> <br /> “If the democrats are in the majority in the House of Representatives in the US, they automatically produce the Speaker and other leadership positions that belong to the majority party.<br /> <br /> “The Republicans will also produce leaders for the positions that belong to the minority positions. If the situation were reversed, then the leadership positions would be reversed in like manner.<br /> <br /> “The parties normally handle this matter and they would return to the chambers to announce their respective new leaders. The process of election in the chambers, therefore, becomes a mere formality.”<br /> <br /> Issa-Onilu said Nigerians should expect more than they witnessed in the last four years in terms of infrastructure, social investment programmes, job creation, security of lives and property, food security, renewed fight against corruption, and the restoration of national dignity.<br /> <br /> He said, “Under the able leadership of our President, we have already turned the corner.<br /> <br /> “President Muhammadu Buhari has an avowed commitment to using the next four years to building a befitting national development edifice on the solid foundation that he has laid in the last four years.”

Fuel scarcity worsens nationwide

The situation worsened in the Oke Ogun area of the state with some filling stations in Saki, especially Ajegunle, selling petrol at N160 per litre amidst long queues.<br /> <br /> <a id="more" name="more"></a><br /> <br /> NE gathered that some filling stations dispensing fuel had manipulated their dispensing pumps to short-change customers even as some buyers were forced to bribe the attendants.<br /> <br /> In Osogbo, the Osun State capital, motorists travelling towards Kwara State were seen buying fuel in jerry cans.<br /> <br /> The situation in Akure, the Ondo State capital, was not different as many filling stations in the state were under lock and key while the few ones that had the product had long queues of vehicles.<br /> <br /> One of our correspondents, who went round Akure, observed that most of the petrol stations, owned by the independent marketers, did not sell the product.<br /> <br /> Responding to inquiry by newsmen, the Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, (Ore Depot), Mr Shina Amoo, said his members did not get the product from the depots.<br /> <br /> Amoo said, “The product is not available at the depots; so, we have to buy from the private depots, which is more expensive. We bought for N139 per litre from the depots excluding other expenses we incur before landing at the petrol station. That is why we have the scarcity. We don’t have enough product in the country but I believe it will soon be resolved.”<br /> <br /> In Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, most filling stations were closed while some persons were seen hawking petrol in jerry cans to motorists along the major streets in the town.<br /> <br /> Following this development, the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, appealed to fuel marketers in the state to desist from hoarding the product to create artificial scarcity.<br /> <br /> Fayemi, in a statement by the Chief Press, Mr Yinka Oyebode, described hoarding of petroleum product as “an act of economic sabotage, which creates unnecessary hardship for the people and cripples businesses.”<br /> <br /> The Department of Petroleum Resources said it had sealed 14 filling stations in Sokoto and Kebbi states for selling above the pump price and diversion of products.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, the Zonal Operations Controller of the DPR in charge of Sokoto and Kebbi states, Mr Muhammad Makera, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Sokoto that the stations were sealed between Wednesday and Thursday.<br /> <br /> One of the marketers, who has filling stations in the South-West, told one of our correspondents that private depot owners had increased the ex-depot price from N133.28 to between N139 and N143 per litre.<br /> <br /> The marketer, who pleaded anonymity, said private depots had to increase the price they sold to independent marketers because the product was not abundantly available.<br /> <br /> He added that the situation might linger except the depots had enough quantity to sell to marketers.<br /> <br /> But the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria and National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers urged Nigerians to stop panic buying of petrol, stressing that the product was sufficiently available.<br /> <br /> They said this in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Lagos against the backdrop of the ongoing fuel scarcity in the country.<br /> <br /> The association said six vessels of imported petrol, ordered by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, were currently discharging the product, assuring the people that the corporation had sufficient products.<br /> <br /> The National President of IPMAN, Mr Chinedu Okoronkwo, said, “Marketers are currently loading petrol in Makurdi, Kano, Enugu, Aba,Yola, Suleja, Kaduna, Ejigbo, Mosinmi, Ibadan and other depots across the country. The shortfall in distribution was due to slow pace of product importation and hitches at the jetty which had been addressed.”<br /> <br /> The Chairman, Lagos Zone of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Mr Tayo Aboyeji, also corroborated the IPMAN’s president, saying “there is enough fuel. Nigerians should avoid panic buying.”<br /> <br /> Pockets of fuel queues emerged in Lagos on Friday, a day after the NNPC restated its commitment to the sustenance of the seamless supply and distribution of petroleum products across the country.<br /> <br /> MOMAN said its members, including Total Nigeria Plc, Forte Oil Plc and Conoil Plc, would continue to receive petrol into their storage tanks from the NNPC vessels at berth and lined up for discharge throughout the weekend and would keep their stations replenished and operational.<br /> <br /> The Chief Executive Officer/Executive Secretary, MOMAN, Mr Clement Isong, in an interview on Saturday, said, “We are still loading out. One vessel is currently discharging to us; another one is about to berth and will start discharging tonight. As one is discharging, using one jetty, the other is discharging through another jetty. Another vessel will berth on Monday.<br /> <br /> “Operationally, I think things are going well. We are receiving and loading out. We are working throughout the weekend to load out to our stations. If people engage in panic buying, then there is nothing that we can do; there are more cars than there are filling stations.”<br /> <br /> The Group Managing Director, NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru, had, on Thursday, stated that no fewer than 55 depots across the country were fully stocked with petrol.<br /> <br /> In a statement released on its verified Twitter handle and signed by its Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, NNPC, Ndu Ughamadu, said, the corporation said it had over one billion litres of fuel in stock.

I can confirm that,” Malum said in a telephone interview with journalists on Saturday.<br /> <br /> Officials of the police, Red Cross, Federal Road Safety Corps and men of the Gombe Fire Service were at the scene of the accident trying frantically to put out the fire as it appeared that the equipment on the ground were inadequate.<br /> <br /> An eyewitness, Adamu Kabo, who spoke to our source said, “The fuel tanker’s brake failed as it approached the Bomala bridge. The driver struggled with the truck, ran into an Atlantis table water distribution vehicle, a motorcycle and a tricycle, and pushed them away from the bridge. The impact of this accident is massive.”<br /> <br /> Another eyewitness, Hasidu Abdulahi revealed that it took the effort of the Gombe and the Pantamin Police Division personnel to get water from a private water tanker to put out the fire of the truck as the Gombe Fire Service officials, who had gone to get more water, took too long in returning.<br /> <br /> Hasidu said, “We decided to use sand and water to fight the fire since help was far.<br /> <br /> “We noticed that the tanker driver was struggling on the bridge. A part fell into the dry canal and the other part was left on the bridge burning.”<br /> <br /> A member of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, who was identified as Ibrahim, lamented that the fire service lacked adequate manpower and technical support to combat the inferno.<br /> <br /> “For over three hours, they found it difficult to put out the fire. They kept going back and forth. The reinforcement they called for took over 50 minutes to arrive.” he said.<br /> <br /> While the police cordoned off the two sides of the bridge, some youths looted the packets of water in the table water distribution van.<br /> <br /> Meanwhile, the governor of Gombe State, Dr. Ibrahim Dankwambo, who was outside the state on Saturday, has commiserated with victims of the tanker explosion.<br /> <br /> Speaking through the Speaker of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Mr. Nasiru Nono, the governor said, “The governor is pained by this gas accident, and has promised to bear the cost of the victims’ medical bills. As a House, on Tuesday, we will extensively discuss the issues pertaining to another alternative bye pass as the growing population seems to have defeated its purpose.<br /> <br /> The Speaker also visited the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, where injured victims were receiving treatment.

They are oil tax revenue, where N4.3tn would be collected and non-oil tax revenue where the service had proposed to generate N4.5tn for the government.<br /> <br /> Further breakdown of the oil tax revenue showed that the entire N4.3tn is expected to come from petroleum profit tax.<br /> <br /> For the non oil tax revenue, an analysis of the document shows that N1.7tn is expected to be earned from company income tax, while gas income, capital gains tax and stamp duty are expected to earn N685.63bn, N6.27bn and N17.64bn, respectively for the government.<br /> <br /> Also, Value Added Tax is expected to contribute N1.7tn; education tax, N275.39bn; consolidated account, N99.78bn and Nigeria Information Technology Development Fund, N20.01bn.<br /> <br /> The FIRS in the document stated that the tax revenue target for 2019 was based on the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan of the Federal Government.<br /> <br /> It said that to boost tax revenue, a lot of initiatives would be implemented with support from the government.<br /> <br /> Some of them are the expansion of Tax Identification database to cover federal, states and local government to establish a reliable VAT tax base across the country.<br /> <br /> While engaging relevant stakeholders, the service said it would develop and propose tax laws targeted at emerging sectors of the economy such as digital economies.<br /> <br /> It said a review of existing tax laws to close the legal loopholes for taxes by adopting a sectoral, rules-based approach would be implemented.<br /> <br /> The FIRS also stated that it would develop a strategy for revenue campaigns targeted at the informal sector of the economy, noting that a unified nationwide tax payer database would be developed.<br /> <br /> It said a strong incentive programme aimed at encouraging tax payment by Nigerians would be designed.<br /> <br /> The incentive, it noted, could involve tying government projects to tax revenue collected.

Onyema Nwachukwu, in an interview with newsmen, said the military and police were given “marching orders”, and had carried out a re-evaluation of their efforts against the bandits as well as the next line of action.<br /> <br /> Nwachukwu stated, “The leadership of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, under Gen Abayomi Olonisakin, the Chief of the Defence Staff, and the police have met and the meeting was to identify gaps in the operations and how to address those issues.<br /> <a id="more" name="more"></a><br /> <br /> “There is a special joint operation coming up and all is already set for it. I cannot give you details of the operation. But it will take care of the banditry in the North-West region and other criminalities.”<br /> <br /> A top military source, who was part of the meeting, told one of our correspondents that the special joint operation had already been named.<br /> <br /> “The special joint operation is already in the pipeline with specific deployments expected from the army, the air force, the navy and the police, even with contributions from the Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Immigration Service,” the source added.<br /> <b><br /></b><b>Police need military support to tackle banditry – Mba</b><br /> <br /> The Nigeria Police Force had initially told one of our correspondents that the agency required support from other security agencies as well as the cooperation of political leaders among other residents of various communities under attacks by bandits, kidnappers and other criminals to free such areas from the grips of the hoodlums.<br /> <br /> The police spokesperson, Mr Frank Mba, said this in an interview with newsmen.<br /> <br /> He said the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, had toured the affected states to assess the security arrangements in place to curb the activities of the criminals terrorising the states, saying the war would soon be won.<br /> <br /> Mba explained that the police under Adamu were already working with indigenes of the affected communities to get useful information needed to rout the criminals and free the communities.<br /> <br /> He stated, “What we require to permanently put an end to this menace is a broad-based action with intervention at multiple levels by multiple agencies. We are leading the charge at the security and law enforcement level while we expect support at the political level from the state and local government levels, religious level and traditional institution as well as socio cultural level.<br /> <br /> “The present leadership of the force is already adopting community policing strategy as one of its main strategies for combating not only banditry but other forms of crime and criminality. That is why the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has been on tour of the affected areas. The IGP was in Birni Gwari, in Kaduna, he was in Zamfara, Sokoto and Katsina within 72 hours.<br /> <br /> “We believe that the Nigeria Police, acting alone all by itself, certainly will not be able to win the war. We need to bring on board more relevant stakeholders and that is what community policing is all about. I want to appeal to Nigerians to be patient and provide us with relevant support. I acknowledge the fact that this is a challenging time but the challenges are certainly not insurmountable.
