It caused traffic and I decided to alight from the bus. I saw a policeman lying lifeless on the floor. There was confusion everywhere.

“I learnt that some policemen were trying to arrest motorcyclists riding against the traffic and on prohibited routes. One of the motorcyclists they were trying to arrest resisted and his co-riders rallied round him because they felt the policemen wanted to extort him.

“One mobile policeman, who was trying to assist the policemen to get out of the situation, cocked and fired into the air to disperse the crowd. He shot and killed a policeman in the process.”

A police source, who is privy to the crisis, said the motorcyclist refused to let go of his bike knowing that he might not get it back.

The source said, “Usually, when such a motorcycle is seized, it will be taken to the task force office and the owner won’t be able to get it again. So the motorcyclist fought to retain his bike and he got support from a crowd.

“While he was struggling with the policemen, the crowd started pelting them with objects. The mobile policeman fired a gunshot to chase them away but unfortunately, the bullet hit his colleague and another motorcyclist driving against traffic. The policeman died on the spot but the rider was rushed to a hospital. He was injured in the leg.”

Our correspondent learnt that it took a reinforcement led by the Divisional Police Officer of Igando Police Station, CSP Taiwo Kasumu, to restore normalcy to the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, said the command had launched a manhunt for the motorcyclist who fought with the police team.

He said, “Our policemen on enforcement on the ban of okada on some prohibited routes in Lagos arrested two motorcyclists – an O’Pay rider and an okada rider, who is an OPC (Oodua Peoples Congress) member. He (the OPC member) was dragging with the team and mobilised people to attack them.

“While that was going on, the team and a mobile policeman with them were under serious threat. One of those people pushed the mobile policeman and he cocked his rifle. Unfortunately, he killed his colleague and injured a motorcyclist. We have commenced investigation into the matter.”

He should be sacked immediately. Disgraceful management #EmeryOut #Arsenal pic.twitter.com/D23Ns7vjt8’

Fans were already annoyed with the manager before kick off. For a home game against a side in the relegation zone the Gunners played seven defensive players.

The north London side set up with three central defenders, two wing backs and Lucas Torreira and Mattéo Guendouzi side-by-side in central midfield.

They went behind through Danny Ings, after the Arsenal defence switched off, before Lacazette levelled things up. James Ward-Prowse made it 2-1, putting in the rebound after his penalty had been saved, before Lacazette made it 2-2.

The result means Emery’s side are on 18 points after 13 games, sitting in eighth place in the league behind Burnley, after winning just five games so far.

We must commence house to house move, and telephone contacts to the 30,000 PVC holders.

“We must not look at the supplementary election with a view that our opponent is politically paralysed by now; rather, we must work towards capturing at least 90 percent of the votes.

“Our aim is to get 30000 out of the 31000 PVC holders of the 40000 registered voters in the affected areas; whether our opponents are ready or not is secondary.”

Nigeria has no reason to remain underdeveloped – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said Nigeria has no reason to remain underdeveloped. He, therefore, identified technology as a catalyst for the country’s development.

The President, who was represented on Saturday by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the graduation ceremony of Senior Executive Course 41 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, said the opportunities in technology were endless.

“We can simply leapfrog and there is so much room for that and we don’t have to evolve through the decades again. We are already positioned to take advantage of technology to move the development further,” Buhari said.

The President also said agriculture was another sector that was being transformed by technology.

“There were about 530 varieties of 37 crops developed in 2014. Cassava yields have increased by 60% in the past decades. It is clear that agriculture cannot remain at the subsistence level again as it is in many parts of the country,” he added.

He advised the NIPSS to graduate from a “think tank” to a “do tank”, saying it was time ideas were not only formulated but also implemented.

“So, I want to urge the NIPSS that our consequent studies must be based on the need to attain some level of understanding on how to implement, on how to get things done. And once you are able to get this done, I am sure substantial difference would be made,” Buhari said.

In his welcome address, the NIPSS Director-General, Prof Habu Galadima, commended the President as well as the Vice-President for giving the institute the desired attention.

Goodluck Jonathan decries rot in Nigerian universities

Universities should not create criminals.

“As a nation, therefore, we must never be weary of prioritising education, especially the type that is anchored on ethics and innovation, because it is the path towards a secure future and sustainable peace.”

He added, “Education is of no essence if it does not place a high premium on productivity as well as the character of the citizen.

“It is a sad development for our educational system that our students, lecturers, and other members of the university community can no longer move freely in campuses without fear. In our days, students didn’t have to bother about their safety while on campus at any time of day. This is no longer the case. No nation can develop if it does not find answers to such an unfortunate state of affairs in an environment where we groom our future leaders.

“It is apt to say that character which is manifested in the virtues of honesty, integrity and courage, is the strength of education. A society profits more when the recipients of knowledge are led by these traits to positively influence their environment,” he explained.

The former president who did not spare the academia for the nation’s woes, stated that in advanced countries, the academia played a pivotal role in nation building and good governance.

He described as dangerous for members of the academia to get involved in election malpractice because of its wider implication on the future of the country.

“Once the youth corps members observe these lecturers and professors who they hold in high esteem attempt to change or falsify elections results, they might begin to see such criminality as the new norm in our country.

“Let me use this opportunity to appeal to members of the academia that get recruited for election duties to do the right thing and not compromise their integrity, no matter the pressure on them.”
