<b>Oyindamola Oluwaseun Ajibare, a caregiver, is a COVID-19 survivor from Lagos. Ajibare took to her social media pages to explain how she survived the deadly virus that has killed over 160,000 people globally. </b><br />
<br />
She, however, alleged that her employer fired her while she was still in isolation. She also said she suspected she contracted the virus from her employer’s 11-year-old son.<br />
<br />
Ajibare, who assumed duty at her employer’s on March 11, alleged that she contracted the virus from her employer’s son who returned from the United Kingdom on March 23.<br />

“The day he came back, he was coughing and having a fever. So, the mother called the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to come and test him, his brother and herself, since she claimed she recently returned from London. The NCDC informed that the test result usually comes out after 48 hours, which we all were anticipating.”<br />
<br />
Ajibare revealed that the test result was not released until 14 days after the 10-year-old’s sample was taken, but the NCDC stayed in touch with the family, monitoring his temperature.<br />
<br />
“While we waited for the result, the boy was always in his room, but as his caregivers, we always had contact with him. But I suspect that it was the day he came that I might have gotten infected because the day the NCDC came to the house to test the boy, I started feeling some symptoms, itchy eyes and aching joints, but I just attributed it to stress,” she said.<br />
<br />
Ajibare’s test result returned positive within 48 hours and she was taken into isolation by the NCDC.<br />
<br />
“The NCDC called and told me that my result came out positive and I would be taken into isolation. They also asked me to inform my colleague, Chioma Paul, who also tested positive. We immediately went into our room until the NCDC came with an ambulance and we were taken into isolation. This was on Easter Saturday.”<br />

At the Onikan Isolation Centre, Ajibare said she and her colleague met four other patients. While at the centre, “we were tested every two days to determine our status and medications like antiretroviral drugs, Augmentin, vitamin C, etc were given to us.”<br />
<br />
Ajibare believes that a patient’s immune system and mental state fight the virus.<br />
<br />
“I think your body fights this thing and also the state of your mind because I was never afraid of the virus and stayed positive. I tested negative after nine days. I was the second person to be discharged at the centre. And before I was discharged, we had increased from 6 that we were when I got there to about 30,” she noted.<br />
<br />
Having survived such a deadly virus, one would expect Ajibare to be over the moon with excitement, but that is not the case.<br />
<br />
“I feel worse after being discharged than even when I was in isolation. I feel traumatised having suffered from the virus, endured isolation and losing my job all at once, plus the stigma that might come with it,” she said.<br />
<br />
Ajibare revealed that she got fired by her employer while she was in isolation for asking to be paid her salary at the end of the month.<br />
<br />
“Even while in isolation, she felt that asking her if I could be paid my salary was an affront. She went all out to lash out at me and declared then and there that I was fired, forgetting that I got the virus from her son who came from London. I didn’t pick this virus on the street. I was working in her house. If it was that I got the virus from outside her house, I could have understood her not being interested, but she was partially responsible for my being infected. Firing me while I was still dealing with the virus I contracted from your house is wickedness.<br />
<br />
“After she fired me, she sent me a message to say that I stole her laptop and she was going to put my story everywhere to make sure nobody employs me. I was very depressed when she accused me of stealing her laptop and decided to call my agency and told them about the situation. When they called her, she denied accusing me of stealing her laptop. My vitals became very bad that the doctors noticed and I was forced to tell them my plight,” she said.<br />
<br />
Ajibare hopes that the Lagos State government will address her employer’s ill-treatment of her because “when I told the doctors my plight, they equally complained to the Lagos State COVID-19 support team. I believe the government will look into it.”<br />
<br />
She added: “I think the agency called her that was when she started threatening to sue me for N500m. It was her threat of litigation that made me cry out on Facebook.<br />
<br />
“I’m out of isolation now and I cannot leave Lagos. I’m putting up with someone. As it is now I’m helpless in all ways. I’m even more depressed now leaving the isolation centre. I have lost my job and I don’t know how long this lockdown is going to take.”

<b><br /></b><b>Nigerian states on Thursday announced the compulsory use of facemasks to halt the spread of coronavirus.</b><br />
<br />
Osun, Ondo, Niger, and Ebonyi joined Lagos, Ogun and Cross Rivers as states where everyone must wear a facemask in public.<br />
<br />
Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola said the mandatory use of facemasks will take effect from today.<br />
<br />

His Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, said it was in line with resolutions reached by the Southwest governors.<br />
<br />
Oyetola reiterated that the sit-at-home order was still in place while urging residents to continue to maintain social distancing and to wash hands regularly.<br />

Niger State government said anyone found without a facemask would be arrested.<br />
<br />
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who gave the directive on Thursday, said: “Please stay at home and if you must go out, ensure that you wear a facemask.<br />
<br />
“Anyone found outside his house without a facemask will be arrested by security agents. They have been mandated to enforce this directive.”<br />
<br />
Bello said over 300,000 locally-made facemasks would be distributed free of charge.<br />
<br />
Ondo State yesterday extended the mandatory use of facemasks by one week. It was to take effect today.<br />
<br />
Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, said: “The shift in the commencement date is as a result of the apparent scarcity of the masks in desirable quantities. The government has intensified efforts to produce enough within this period of grace.”<br />
<br />
Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, said anyone seen in public without a facemask would be flogged.<br />
<br />
He directed members of the state Anti-COVID-19 Taskforce to flog anybody seen moving about without a facemask no matter their status.<br />
<br />
Umahi said during a broadcast on Wednesday: “Let me warn again that no face mask in Ebonyi State, no public movement.<br />
<br />
“If you don’t have facemask and you are out, I am directing the local government chairmen to use their men to inflict minimum compliance which is the use of the cane.”<br />
<br />
The governor asked all political appointees to return to their local government areas to monitor compliance.<br />
<br />
“If there is any case of the virus in the local government, we will lock down that location 200 radius and quarantine everybody there. No going in, no coming out,” he said.<br />
<br />
The Ebonyi COVID-19 taskforce was accused of high-handedness after it allegedly killed Chidi Agwu-Arua during an enforcement operation.<br />
<br />
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) blamed the taskforce in Afikpo South for the killing, but the state denied it.<br />
<br />
Also yesterday, Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq announced the extension of the state’s lockdown by another 14 days.<br />
<br />
Akwa Ibom State government extended the Quarantine and Movement Restriction Order by three days.

The White House on Thursday pitched “emerging” research on the benefits of sunlight and humidity in diminishing the threat of the coronavirus as President Donald Trump encourages US states to move to reopen their economies. Past studies have not found good evidence that the warmer temperatures and higher humidity of spring and summer will help tamp down the spread of the virus.<br />

But William Bryan of the Department of Homeland Security said at a White House briefing that there are “emerging results” from new research that suggest solar light has a powerful effect in killing the virus on surfaces and in the air.<br />
<br />
“He said scientists have seen a similar effect from higher temperatures and humidity. A biocontainment lab in Maryland has been conducting testing on the virus since February, Bryan said. “The virus is dying at a much more rapid pace just from exposure to higher temperatures and just from exposure to humidity,” Bryan said. Bryan said having more knowledge about this could help governors when making decisions about how and when to open their state economies.<br />
<br />
However, he stressed that the emerging results of the light and heat studies do not replace social distancing recommendations. Trump, who has consistently looked for hopeful news about containing the virus, was asked if it was dangerous to make people think they would be safe by going outside in the heat, considering that so many people have died in Florida.<br />
<br />
“I hope people enjoy the sun. And if it has an impact, that’s great,” Trump replied, adding, “It’s just a suggestion from a brilliant lab by a very, very smart, perhaps brilliant man.” “I’m here to present ideas, because we want ideas to get rid of this thing. And if heat is good, and if sunlight is good, that’s a great thing as far as I’m concerned,” the president said.<br />
<br />
Trump noted that the researchers were also looking at the effects of disinfectants on the virus and wondered aloud if they could be injected into people, saying the virus “does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that.” Bryan said there was no consideration of that.<br />
<br />
The president has often talked up prospects for new therapies and offered rosy timelines for the development of a vaccine. Earlier in the month, scientific advisers told the White House there’s no good evidence yet that the heat and humidity of summer will rein in the virus without continued public health measures. Researchers convened by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine analyzed studies done so far to test virus survival under different laboratory conditions as well as tracking where and how COVID-19 has spread so far.<br />
<br />
“Given that countries currently in ‘summer’ climates, such as Australia and Iran, are experiencing rapid virus spread, a decrease in cases with increases in humidity and temperature elsewhere should not be assumed,” the researchers wrote earlier in April in response to questions from the White House Office of Science and Technology. In addition, the report cited the global lack of immunity to the new virus and concluded, “if there is an effect of temperature and humidity on transmission, it may not be as apparent as with other respiratory viruses for which there is at least some preexisting partial immunity.”<br />
<br />
They noted that during 10 previous flu pandemics, regardless of what season they started, all had a peak second wave about six months after the virus first emerged. In March, Dr. Michael Ryan, the World Health Organization’s emergencies chief. said, “We have to assume that the virus will continue to have the capacity to spread, and it’s a false hope to say yes, it will just disappear in the summertime like influenza.”

Former Minister of Aviation Chief Femi Fani-Kayode said yesterday that he opposed President Muhammadu Buhari’s style based on principle and conviction.<br />

He said that he could not keep mute in the face of the “dark and sinister forces” represented by the administration.<br />

Fani-Kayode, a defector from the All Progressives Congress (APC), said his constant criticisms of the President in the last five years were driven by “the atrocities of herdsmen and Boko Haram, and the tyranny, wickedness, evil, corruption and incompetence of the regime.”<br />

He noted that he had been “humiliated, persecuted, incarcerated and insulted” than most people in the country due to his unrelenting opposition to the Federal Government.<br />
<br />
The former minister, who is undergoing trial for alleged corruption, lamented that Nigerians ignored his advice to reject President Buhari at the polls in 2015, saying that they repeated the same mistake by re-electing him in 2019.<br />
<br />
Fani-Kayode, son of the controversial former Nigeria National Democratic Party (NNDP) stalwart and Deputy Premier of defunct Western Region, the late Chief Remi Fani-Kayode, said in a statement in Lagos that he chose to speak for the oppressed members of the society.<br />
<br />
Noting that his principled position is risky, he said he took pride in exposing and doing damage to the evil forces more than any citizen.<br />
<br />
Fani-Kayode said: “I have also spoken up for the weak, the poor, the oppressed, the deprived, the voiceless and the persecuted across ethnic, religious and party lines.<br />
<br />
“And I have done all this right under the noses of those in power and not from distant shores or foreign land. That does not, however, mean that I have lost my humanity. That does not mean that I will relish in anyone’s death.<br />
<br />
“That does not mean that I will dance on the grave of others because death comes to us all and doing so diminishes us as human beings and makes us little better than beasts.<br />
<br />
He added: “For the last 30 years I have written and spoken out against the atrocities and the hegemony that the people of the South and the Middle Belt and the Christian community have suffered in the hands of our collective oppressors since 1914 and over the last 106 years.”<br />
<br />
The former minister spoke on past injustices that have not been redressed, stressing that Southeast continued to count the cost of the 30-month old civil war.<br />
<br />
He said: “I have also consistently argued that the people of the Southeast were subjected to nothing less than genocide during the civil war and that if we really want peace, we must make the necessary amends and atonement for this and they must be treated in an accommodating, reasonable and compassionate way and with far more decency and sensitivity.”<br />
<br />
Fani-Kayode said the Christian minorities in the North, who have been victims of ”ethnic cleansing, mass murder, crimes against humanity and genocide” in the last 60 years should be treated with respect and dignity.<br />
<br />
Peeping into the future, he said: “What lies ahead for our country is frightful and chilling because the extremists and hardliners in the Federal Government are now in full control with no one to moderate, restrain or put them in check.”<br />
<br />
He added: “What makes it worse is that the President has hidden himself in the Aso Rock bunker and has refused to step out and offer direction or provide strong and purposeful leadership.”<br />
<br />
Fani-Kayode alluded to what he described as “a dangerous power vacuum,” stressing that “unless the President has the presence of mind to resign or to step up to the plate, rid us of the nepotism and the ethnic and religious divisions that plague the land, heal our wounds, change his ways and lead us fairly and boldly, it will not end any time soon.”<br />
<br />
Fani-Kayode predicted that “the next few months and years will be difficult, harsh, unpredictable, unstable, bloody, vicious, brutish, hard, retrogressive, divisive, nasty, horrendous and nightmarish for our dear country.”<br />
<br />
He also said “there will be little respite for anyone because that is all our government has to offer.”<br />
<br />
Fani-Kayode warned that “what is likely to happen in Nigeria will make the ugly events that unfolded in Zaire and the Congo DRC over the last few decades and the horrendous events that occurred in Rwanda in the early 90’s look like a child’s play.”<br />
<br />
However, he said although his predictions will come to reality, “the only saving grace is that God, and not any man, shall eventually deliver us.”<br />
<br />
Fani-Kayode defended his tribute to the deceased Chief of Staff to the President, Mallam Abba Kyari, saying it does not translate into the abdication of the struggle.<br />
<br />
He said those who were against his position on Kyari “are entitled to their opinion and are free to stop reading my contributions and commentaries.”<br />
<br />
He said: “Regardless of their disposition towards me, I will continue to hold on to my views and express them. I owe myself, my God and my nation that much if nothing else.”

The Kano State Government, on Thursday, repatriated, not fewer than 419 Almajiris to Katsina and handed them over to the state government.<br />

While receiving the Almajiris, the Secretary to the Katsina State Government, Dr Mustapha Inuwa, said all the returnees would be transferred to NYSC camp in Katsina to undergo another round of health examination, from where they would be transported to their respective localities across the state.<br />

Meanwhile, the Kano State Committee Relief Funds Task Force disclosed that the State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, would launch the distribution of relief materials from Thursday (today).

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has confirmed the first COVID-19-related death in the state.<br />
<br />
Makinde gave the confirmation via a post on his Twitter handle on Wednesday.<br />
<br />
According to him, the patient died at the University College Hospital before the result of his confirmation test for the virus came out.<br />
<br />
He added that contact tracing had since commenced.<br />

The governor said, “The COVID-19 confirmation test for one suspected case came back positive. The patient died at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, before his result came out today (Wednesday). Contact tracing has already commenced.<br />

“As reported earlier, one confirmed case was transferred to Lagos. So, there are currently five active cases in Oyo State.<br />
<br />
“We thank APIN Health Initiatives, which donated medical supplies and offered their factory as the venue for the production of one million face masks; and all others who donated in cash and kind towards the government’s effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19.<br />
<br />
“We urge the following categories of people, who have not already done so, to call the Emergency Operations Centre for the ongoing drive through testing at Adamasingba Stadium: people who believe they could have come into contact with a COVID-19 case in Oyo State; people who returned to Nigeria from abroad within the last one month and their contacts; people with respiratory symptoms and health-care workers who have been in contact with the high-risk groups, above.<br />

“Please, keep following the directives of the Oyo State COVID-19 Task Force. Wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, regularly. Also, continue to maintain social distancing. Gatherings in Oyo State are limited to a maximum of ten persons.”
