The Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has opined that Nigerian-British boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, will return to the boxing ring ‘bigger, better and stronger,’ after suffering defeat and losing his titles to Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk.
The NIDCOM boss sent the words of encouragement to Joshua following his defeat in the hand of Ukrainian professional boxer, Oleksandr Usyk, on Saturday night.
Joshua lost his IBF, WBA, WBO heavyweight titles to the Ukrainian in front of a 65,000 crowd at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Sharing a picture of Joshua, the NIDCOM chairperson via her Instagram account expressed optimism that the boxer with bounce back in due time with the caption, “Temporary setbacks can’t take winners off their course. AJ will return bigger, better and stronger.”

Shortly after losing the boxing bout, Joshua took to his social media account to motivate his fans, stating, “Keep positive even if the world’s crumbling in front of you! London I love you & thank you each and every time!”
This would be the second time the boxer has suffered defeat in his career. He had his first defeat as a professional boxer last year in the hands of Andy Ruiz.

 Long lines of vehicles have formed at petrol stations in the UK in recent days as scarcity of the fuel bites.
But transport Minister Grant Shapps on Sunday called on Britons to behave normally when buying the product.
He said there was no shortage.

He said the government was stepping in to ease a shortage of drivers bringing it to petrol stations.
The queues at stations began after oil firms reported a lack of drivers was causing transport problems from refineries to forecourts.
Some operators have had to ration supplies and others to close gas stations.
“There’s plenty of fuel, there’s no shortage of the fuel within the country,” Shapps told Sky News.
“So the most important thing is actually that people carry on as they normally would and fill up their cars when they normally would, then you won’t have queues and you won’t have shortages at the pump either.”
Shapps said the shortage of drivers was down to COVID-19 disrupting the qualification process for drivers, preventing new labour from entering the market.

But business leaders have warned the government’s plan is short-term fix and will not solve an acute labour shortage that risks major disruption beyond fuel deliveries, including for retailers in the run-up to Christmas.
Shapps called the panic over fuel a ‘manufactured situation’ and blamed it on a hauliers’ association.
“They’re desperate to have more European drivers undercutting British salaries,” he said.
An Opinium poll published in the Observer newspaper on Sunday said that 67% of voters believe the government has handled the crisis badly. A majority of 68% said that Brexit was partly to blame.
Opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, speaking at his party’s annual conference in southern England, said ministers had failed to plan for labour shortages following the 2016 Brexit vote and called for a bigger temporary visa scheme.
“This is a complete lack of planning: we exited the EU … just one consequence was there was going to be a shortage of HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle) drivers. That was predictable, it was predicted,” he told the BBC.

Nigerian singer, Oritsefemi Majemite Ekele, popularly known by his first name Oritse Femi, has been hospitalized after surviving a ghastly motor accident.
The singer made this known in a post via his Instagram story on Sunday.
According to him, he was on his way after a show when the unfortunate incident occurred.
He, however, noted that no life was loss, but added that he and one other sustained some injuries.

Governor Ron DeSantis has appointed Nigeria-born Dr Joseph A. Ladapo as Florida Surgeon General and Secretary of the Florida Department of Health.
DeSantis hailed Ladapo’s “superb background” and remarkable academic and medical career with a strong emphasis in health policy research.
Lieutenant Governor, Jeanette Nuñez described Ladapo as an excellent choice for the position.
Nuñez said the doctor has impeccable credentials and “a strong vision to effectively serve the people of Florida at the helm of our public health agency”.

In his remarks, Ladapo stressed that health policy decisions must be rooted in data and not in fear.
Noting that it is a privilege to serve the people, he commended DeSantis for his determination to ensure that Floridians get opportunities to maintain their health and wellness.
The new Surgeon General was born in Nigeria and immigrated to the United States along with his family at age 5. His father is a microbiologist.
Ladapo was recently granted a professorship at the University of Florida (UF) College of Medicine. He served as an associate professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
The graduate of Wake Forest University also holds an MD from Harvard Medical School and a PhD in Health Policy from Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
Ladapo is a physician and health policy researcher whose primary research interests include clinical trial interventions and reducing the population burden of cardiovascular disease.
The Nigerian-American won the Daniel Ford Award for health services and outcomes research. He and his wife have three children.

A large group of Boko Haram jihadists have moved out of their base in the North-East to join forces with criminal gangs in the North-West, where they are engaged in weapons training and kidnapping, military sources told AFP on Friday.

Boko Haram’s Islamic State-allied rivals have been consolidating their grip on the North-East after the death of Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, this year in a major shift in Nigeria’s 12-year insurgency battle.
 
Islamic State West Africa Province has been moving into Boko Haram’s territory, fighting Shekau loyalists, assimilating some or forcing others to surrender to the armed forces, security sources said.
 
Details of the Boko Haram fighters moving could be the latest sign of cooperation between jihadists and criminal armed groups in the North-West, who raid and loot villages and conduct mass abductions for ransom.
 
Two military sources said a faction loyal to Shekau based in Borno State had dispatched two commanders and 250 fighters to the Rijana forests in northwestern Kaduna State.
 
Both commanders are allied with Bakoura Buduma, a Boko Haram chief who remains loyal to Shekau and whose fighters are resisting ISWAP consolidation, according to security sources.
“They are the masterminds behind some of the abductions in the North-West,” one of the military sources said.
Both sources said Boko Haram militants were also training the gangs, known locally as bandits, in the use of anti-aircraft guns and explosives and other weapons.
 
Military spokesperson could not immediately be reached for comment. Kaduna State officials also did not immediately reply to a request for confirmation.
 
A Nigerian security agency communiqué earlier this month warned that a Boko Haram commander and foot soldiers were moving across the country from their base in Borno State to Kaduna State in the North-West.
 
Analysts said there had been growing signs that jihadists and bandit gangs were developing deeper ties where both stood to gain: Jihadists supply arms while profiting from criminal activity.
 
North-West Nigeria has long been plagued by bandit groups, but this year, attacks and kidnappings have surged.

No less than 15 All Progressives Congress stalwarts have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party along with their supporters in Gombe State.
Addressing supporters on Saturday at the PDP secretariat, Lazarus Yoriyo, a former deputy governor, said that he was not impressed with the happenings in the ruling APC, adding that he had seen it all.
Yoriyo was a former deputy governor to ex-governor Danjuma Goje, who is now the senator representing Gombe Central.
Until 2019, PDP remained the dominant political party in the state prior to the electoral victory of Governor Muhammadu Yahaya, who swept the entire state.

According to Yoriyo, PDP remains the best political party ever when compared to what obtains in APC.
He said, “I went to APC, and I have seen everything that happened there. However, what is happening there is not encouraging. PDP is the best place to ever be.”
While commenting on the imperative of owning a voter card, the former deputy governor urged his teeming supporters to get it ready.
“I wish to appeal to thousands of our supporters to get their Permanent Voters Card ahead of 2023 elections,” Yoriyo said.
Also speaking, chairman of the party, Maj. Gen. Abnor Kwaskebe, lauded the determination of the defectors to retrace their steps.
Kwaskebe said that the state would continue to remain a PDP state, adding that the party had intended to use the township stadium but was denied by authorities.
While welcoming the defectors, the chairman stressed that their right would be given to them.
“Gombe is PDP, PDP is Gombe. They have returned today because APC has turned hot for them,” he said.
