President Salva Kiir swore in Taban Deng Gai as first vice president of South Sudan on Tuesday, replacing Riek Machar, who hasn’t been seen nor hear from since fighting broke out earlier this month between his forces and those loyal to the president.<br />

In an exclusive interview yesterday, Machar spoke with Al Jazeera’s Sami Zeidan, criticising Deng Gai’s appointment. "I'm still the first VP of the republic of South Sudan,” said Machar. "The appointment made yesterday by President Salva Kiir is illegal. It has no basis because the peace agreement does not give him the powers to appoint a first VP under the current circumstances. As you know the appointment of Taban from the perspective of SPM and SPMIO is not acceptable because he has defected and joined the faction of President Salva Kiir. He cannot appoint someone who has defected to replace me.”<br />

Machar added, “With the appointment, he [Kiir] has taken the furthest step for the collapse of the peace agreement. I am waiting for the international community and regional body to say they will deploy troops to Juba and once they do that I will return to implement the agreement but what Kiir is doing is against the peace agreement and indicates it’s collapsing."<br />
<br />
Machar confirmed he was “around Juba” but denied he was about to order his troops to march on the capital and reinstate him by force. "We will wait and have been waiting… As long as the international community and the regional third party force are beingwaited to deploy, we will not disrupt that, but if they fail, this will be an indication that the whole agreement is forsaken, by the international community and the regional body that brokered the peace agreement."

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, President, Amaju Pinnick, has paid a tribute to the late ex-Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, on Thursday, describing him as a super hero.<br />

Speaking at the funeral mass in Benin, he said: “I have always described him as a super hero because he was a super hero. He did not do things that were regular he did things that were extraordinary.<br />
<br />
“That (honour) is definitely going to be done.”<br />
<br />
Keshi, a former national team captain and coach, died on June 8‎ in Benin at the age of 54, after a 44-month stint as coach of the Super Eagles.<br />
<br />
He won the African Nations Cup, AFCON as a player in 1994 and as a coach in 2013.<br />

A lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Malcom Omirhobo, on Thursday filed a suit at a Federal High Court in Lagos, challenging the ban of the sales of petrol in jerry cans.<br />

The applicant is suing for himself and on behalf of other Nigerians.<br />
<br />
The Attorney-General of the Federation, the Minister of State for Petroleum, the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Inspector General (IG) of Police were joined as respondents in the suit.<br />
<br />
The new suit numbered: FHC/L/CS/1024/2016 is brought pursuant to Order 2: Rule 1 of the Fundamental Rights Enforcement Procedure Rules, 2009. Omirhobo is seeking a declaration that the directive by the second and third respondents to filling station owners not to sell petroleum products to Nigerians in jerry cans was discriminatory.<br />
<br />
In an affidavit deposed to by the applicant, he averred that in January, he had approached several filling stations within his reach, with a jerry can to purchase fuel for his generators, but was denied sale.<br />
<br />
The human rights activist said that all the filling station operators said that there was a directive from the respondents, not to sell fuel to Nigerians in jerry cans, gallons or kegs.<br />
<br />
He, further, averred that this refusal led him as well as many other Nigerians to resort to buying fuel from the black market at exorbitant prices. According to Omirhobo, the black market operators besieged filling stations with drums and gallons to purchase large volumes of fuel.<br />
<br />
They, then, hoarded the product and, subsequently, sold it to the public at astronomical prices, he said. Omirhobo said that the petrol attendants preferred to sell fuel to black marketers in order to maximise profits.<br />
<br />
The legal practitioner also averred that since power supply was relatively poor, he and other Nigerians had been helplessly compelled to purchase the products from the black market at high prices. He added that this condition had forced him and many Nigerians to live in very poor and excruciating conditions.<br />
<br />
Omirhobo averred that as long as power supply was yet to improve in the country, Nigerians would continue to rely on generators and purchase fuel in kegs to power them.<br />
<br />
He, therefore, sought a declaration that the directive of the respondents to filing station operators nationwide not to sell petrol to Nigerians in gallons, except those with vehicles, was inhumane and unlawful.<br />
<br />
He also sought a declaration that the police had failed in its duty to put the black market under check and control. He said that the police had also failed in ensuring that persons were not allowed to hoard fuel for the purpose of re-sale.<br />
<br />
The applicant further sought an order, compelling the respondents to stop forthwith, the discriminatory and inhumane treatment meted on him and other Nigerians by the ban.<br />
He also wanted an order directing the respondents to order the sale of petrol to every Nigerian in jerry cans for personal consumption and to facilitate their source of livelihood.<br />
<br />
In addition, the applicant sought an order, directing the police to perform their statutory duty and ensure that the activities of black marketers were checked.<br />
<br />
The court had not fixed any date for the hearing of the suit.<br />

Veteran actor Pete Edochie has reacted to the recent demands for the resignation of Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.<br />

The renowed actor lambasted  the Muhammadu Buhari led government and his party, the All Progressives Congress, over their insistence on removal of Chief Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President.<br />

The APC leadership, including some governors elected under the party’s platform have repeatedly said the plan to remove Ekweremadu was a task that must be accomplished.<br />
<br />
‎Reacting to the squabble, the respected actor in a post on his Facebook wall entitled: “Pete Edochie Quotes” slammed the Buhari led government for chasing shadows while the situation in the country worsened.<br />

He wrote:‎ “If Ekweremadu’s removal will help stabilize the economy, then, they should do all within their power to remove him.<br />
<br />
“If Ekweremadu’s removal will stop Nigerians from losing their jobs, then,it is a task that must be done.<br />

“If Ekweremadu’s removal will curtail Fulani Herdsmen from killing of helpless Nigerians, then, Ekweremadu should vacate both his office and the senate immediately.<br />

“If Ekweremadu’s removal will stabilize the prices of food and common commodities in the market, then, I am joining them in asking Ekweremadu to vacate the senate.<br />

“If Ekweremadu’s removal will make Buhari to abandon his 97% and 5% policy, stop Buhari from seeking to turn Nigeria to a fiefdom where the only capable hands are only people from a certain part of the country, then, Ekweremadu’s immediate constituency should recall him from the senate.<br />

A 46-year-old woman, Aisha, on Wednesday lost her 21-year-old marriage to her husband, Ashimiyu, over poor cooking. The petitioner, Ashimiyu, 54, approached the court and asked it to dissolve the marriage over his wife’s alleged poor cooking.<br />

“My wife does not know how to cook, her food was always tasteless. Anytime she cooks and I complain about it, she will tell me to cook myself.<br />
<br />
I started cooking my food because if I had continued to eat her food, I might have fallen sick.<br />
<br />
My wife was very dirty; she will not wash or sweep the house. Everywhere in the house used to smell.<br />
<br />
She kept packing used plates for four days or more without washing them and I was always doing the cleaning.<br />
<br />
Aisha will go out every Friday and return on Sunday evening. During weekdays, she will leave home by 7AM. and returned at midnight and I dared not query her.<br />
<br />
Aisha has turned my children against me, they no longer respect me and she will not allow me to correct them whenever they erred.<br />
<br />
On several occasions, my wife and my first son tore my clothes in the public when I wanted to beat him for his wrong doing,” he said.<br />
<br />
Ashimiyu said his wife was lazy, adding that she ruined the shop he equipped for her on three occasions.<br />
<br />
But Aisha, a launderer, said: “I do not know why my husband stopped eating my food. I tried my best to give him good food but he was always complaining that my food was tasteless. I was not dirty as I was always cleaning the house.”<br />
<br />
Aisha urged the court not to grant her husband’s plea, saying “I still love him.”<br />
<br />
Delivering his judgment, the President, Igando Customary Court, Adegboyega Omilola, said the petitioner was adamant despite all mediations from the court and family intervention to save the marriage.<br />
<br />
“Since the petitioner has insisted on divorce after several interventions, the court has no choice than to dissolve the union despite the wife’s claim that she still loves her husband.<br />
<br />
The court pronounced the marriage between Ashimiyu A. and Aisha A. dissolved today (Wednesday); both parties, henceforth, ceased to be husband and wife.<br />
<br />
Both are free to go their separate ways without any hindrances or molestation,” Omilola ruled.
