A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has called on the newly elected President of Sierra Leone, Julius Bio, to sustain the country’s relationship with Nigeria, which was strengthened during the time of the immediate past President, Ernest Bai Koroma.

This call was contained in a congratulatory letter he sent to Bio on Thursday, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent by Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Friday in Abeokuta.

Bio won the presidential run-off on Wednesday.

While he congratulated him, he noted that the people of Sierra Leone have spoken.

The letter read in part, “No doubt, the good people of Sierra Leone have spoken and have decided to repose their trust and confidence in your leadership.

“By this clear victory, Sierra Leoneans have not only given you a mandate to lead with the sound policies that will bring much socio-economic progress to the country but also to reassure you of their faith in your leadership, given your experience and background in government.

“This has undoubtedly prepared you for the great responsibility as the leader of Sierra Leone.

“I, therefore, wish you God’s guidance as you face, with vision and vigour, the challenges of lifting the nation up to greater heights.

“As Your Excellency is aware, Nigeria and Sierra Leone have enjoyed excellent relations, which have been further strengthened under the leadership of your predecessor, President Ernest Bai Koroma.

“I hope that the profound traditional bonds of friendship subsisting between Nigeria and Sierra Leone will grow from strength to strength during your administration and under your leadership.”

Ebuehi who has made three international appearances for Gernot Rohr’s side dreams of making the squad for the World Cup.

“Even though we won 4-2 against Argentina in November, it’s still a very difficult opponent, especially when Lionel Messi is competing, and he didn’t play against us,” Ebuehi told his club’s official website.

“Also Iceland and Croatia have shown how good they are. I think we will certainly qualify for the next round, but then everything has to be right.”

The 21-year-old also explained why his move to Portuguese club Benfica fell through during the January transfer window.

“It was not my goal to leave ADO Den Haag at all costs this winter, I am still young, my time is coming,” he said.

“I am just very happy that I am still playing here and the coach gave me that advice. ‘Stay at ADO Den Haag, at least you can make minutes there’.”

Ebuehi has played 27 of ADO Den Haag’s 29 matches this season, missing two due to injury and suspension.

“One and a half year ago I did not dare to think that I would get the attention of such a big club and play in the national team, it could indeed go fast in football,” he added. “I see it as a result of daily working hard to get better, that’s already bearing fruit, but I’m not there yet.

“I have to keep developing myself, I have not finished at ADO Den Haag yet.”

ADO Den Haag are ninth in the Dutch Eredivisie table with 39 points from 29 games, three points adrift of Vitesse who occupy the final UEFA Europa League qualification spot.

“It’s going very well, yes, we do not have to look down any more and everything is quiet around the club, which of course we are not satisfied with,” Ebuehi said.

“If we pick up good form after the loss against AZ, we can qualify to play European football next season.

“It would be something, special to qualify for European football and the World Cup. Yes, the dream would be complete.”

Some unions in the aviation sector have suspended their plan to shut down the industry over the delay by the Federal Government to pay the N45 billion entitlements of ex-workers of the defunct Nigerian Airways.

Mr Olayinka Abioye, General Secretary, National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) confirmed the development to newsmen on Friday in Lagos.

Newsmen report that NUATE, National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers (NAAPE) and the Air Transport Senior Staff Services Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN) had on March 19 given the government a 14-day ultimatum.

They had threatened to go on strike if the government fails to pay the not fewer than 6,000 workers, the N45 billion approved for them by the Federal Executive Council over ten months ago.

However, Abioye told newsmen that the unions decided to suspend the strike after a recent meeting with the Minister of State for Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika.

He said :”Before the expiration of the ultimatum, the minister invited aviation stakeholders to a meeting in Abuja, to unveil the transaction advisers for the concession of airports and national carrier.

“At the meeting, we raised the issue of the outstanding payment of N45 billion to the former Nigerian Airways staffers and he responded by first of all pleading with the unions to sheath their swords.

“He asked us to give him two weeks to sort out the matter and that the N45 billion has already been secured, but it has to be pass through the National Assembly before payment can be implemented.

“According to him, the House of Representatives have already done their oversight and the Senate will follow suit after resumption form Easter break and payment will be effected.”

Abioye said based on the assurance given by the minister, the unions met and decided to suspend the proposed industrial action.

“So, we are optimistic that the money will be paid soon, so that we can put this issue behind us and focus on other key ways to improve the sector,” he added.

Newsmen report that the former national carrier was liquidated by President Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime in September 2004.
