A man seen lying lifeless in a recent viral video on social media, allegedly due to a furious raid by police officers on an illegal raid on the busy Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, has died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital LASUTH.
The victim, identified as Mr. Oloruniran Ajani, had a severe head injury and it was learned he died after reaching the hospital on the evening of the incident.
Witnesses said the policemen had chased a commercial bus from the Bolade bus stop, dangerously halting their target at the Airport bus stop, and had crashed the bus into a ditch.
The witnesses told our correspondent that the commercial-bus driver escaped from the scene despite the fatal road-rage engaged in by the policemen, who were said to have been on an illegal duty operation.
By coincidence, the late Ajani was said to have been a retiree of the Engineering Department at the same LASUTH where he eventually died.
A source at the hospital told our correspondent that policemen who visited in company of the yet-to-be-identified errant police officer had also threatened the hospital staff, insisting they attend first to the policeman and ignore his victim.
“There was a mild encounter at first between the nurses and policemen who came with the wounded officer on the evening”, the hospital source told our correspondent.
“They wanted the officer to be treated first before the victim but some of staff present who recognized the victim as a former staff argued with them that the victim was first taken in before the officer”, the source continued.
The errant officer, who is still being treated, was mobbed by angry members of the public who witnessed the tragic raid.
Mr. Ajani’s body has been taken to the LASUTH morgue, where a post mortem operation on him is expected on Tuesday.
