The Lagos State Government says disregard for safety rules and guidelines will continue to receive stiff punishment.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day safety training for stakeholders, titled, ‘Work Height and Application of First Aid in the Construction Industry,’ the Director-General, Lagos State Safety Commission, Mr. Hakeem Dickson, said when everybody obeyed rules, unnecessary tragedies would be averted.

He said the training was organised to reduce incidence of people falling from heights while working on sites.

Dickson said, “The construction sites are the most hazardous places. A large number of safety accidents that occur are usually from the sector due to lack of proper safety measures and basic training on safety.

“The state government has outlawed the use of substandard materials for buildings. It is the responsibility of all to report people using substandard materials to the commission for appropriate action.”

The DG added that it was compulsory for construction companies to be registered with the safety commission to ensure that they had all the requisite safety plans in place before moving to site.

He advised the participants to pay adequate attention and put what they had learnt at the training into practice.

The Director, Safety, Training and Education, Mr. Adeyinka Adebiyi, said part of the training included the appropriate use of personal protective equipment, conduction of risk assessment, and proper inspection and erection of ladders and scaffolds.
