The Director Homeland Security Agency, government of Cross River State security outfit, established by Governor Ben Ayade, Richard Odu has allegedly been arrested by the Police in the State.
Odu’s arrest may not be unconnected with the attempted assassination of Bar Joseph Odok, one of the critics of Governor Ben Ayade’s government.
Odok who is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was severely macheted and narrowly escaped death on Monday in Calabar at Zanazi Bar, along Parliamentary road and the Director was alleged to be one of the prime suspects.
The Chairman of the party, Mr. John Ochala in a telephone interview with Daily post said the Director was arrested by the police as a prime suspect in connection with the attempted murder. “As a political party, we will not rest until the truth is revealed. Odu is currently in detention in connection to the crime and some powerful government officials have been trying to get him out,”he said.
The APC Chairman warned that, “The Cross River government must know that no single man has monopoly of violence. That APC and its members are peace loving does not mean we will sit and watch their intimidation and harassment.
“We call on the security agencies handling the matter to ensure the perpetrators of this dastardly act are brought to book,” adding that, “We will not allow Ayade and his aides to gag opposition in Cross River State. All this is in connection with the coming elections to intimidate and harass our faithful but we won’t accept it”.
When contacted on phone on Saturday, the State Police Public Relations officer, Irene Ugbo denied knowledge of police arresting the Director of Home Land Security Agency and queried, “Which of the Command, State Criminal and Investigation Department, (CID). I am not aware.”
The PPRO rather informed our correspondent that a cultist was arrested in the early hour of Saturday and an investigation was continuing. She promised to furnish us with details.
