Since Anthony Joshua vanquished the Ukranian two-time world heavyweight champion, Wladimir Klitschko, he became the runaway favourite for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
However, in a bizarre turn of events that shocked even the winner Mo Farah, Joshua was shut out of the top three nominees.
Farah had long since given up on the SPOTY shindig. After the indignity of coming only fourth in 2012, after he produced the defining moments of the London Olympics, he had shown little enthusiasm for making the 2½-hour train journey to Liverpool.
Clearly shocked by his defeat, Anthony Joshua did not take long to disappear into the night. But he did spare some words for his riveting duel with Klitschko, which catapulted him into heavyweight aristocracy.
“It was tough, a lot tougher than I expected. The stage was set and we came together, we gelled well,” Joshua said.
