Passenger slashes driver’s throat to snatch car
A passenger, one Ekene Ugwu, has been arrested by the police in Enugu after slashing the throat of a taxi driver he hired to convey him to an undisclosed location.
The spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, said the incident took place on August 22 in the Udenu Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police spokesman, the victim, one Anthony Nnamani, was a taxi driver who used a Toyota Camry.
On the fateful day, Ugwu asked Nnamani to take him to an unknown destination.
However, unknown to the taxi driver, his passenger only approached him with the intention of snatching the vehicle.
In the course of the journey, Ugwu brought out a short cutlass he had in his possession and used it to slash Nnamani’s throat.
The driver died on the spot.
But Ugwu was not able to escape with the vehicle.
Members of the public, including other motorists and passersby, who witnessed the incident, raised the alarm and blocked all available escape routes, preventing him (the murderer) from escaping.
They also alerted the operatives of the Udenu police division, who were stationed around the area where the incident occurred.
Ugwu was then apprehended as he attempted to make away with the vehicle.
Amaraizu explained that the suspect, who is in detention, is helping the police in ongoing investigations into the incident.
