Police release Lagos airport stowaway identity

The Airport Command of the Nigerian Police Force on Thursday said preliminary investigations had revealed that the Lagos airport stowaway arrested on Wednesday lives in Anambra.

The police also gave the name of the stowaway as Festus Chikelube.

The suspect was nabbed inside the tyre compartment of a Ghana-bound Medview Airlines plane parked at the tarmac of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two.

The police said the suspect had travelled by road from Anambra State to Lagos before finding his way into the airport through its perimeter fence.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Command, Mr. Alabi Joseph, who said this, added that Chikelubbe was making confessional statements to the police.

He added that details of the investigations would be made known to the public soon.

He said, “The suspect is still with us; we are on top of the matter. The Criminal Investigation Department is looking into the matter. Details of our findings will be made known soon.”

The suspect is 24 years old, according to the PPRO.

The stowaway was found inside the aircraft tyre compartment by Medview Airlines pilot during his final check on the plane before its departure to Accra, Ghana.

Chikelube had confessed to the act on Wednesday during interrogation by police detectives.

He told police investigators that he was frustrated and wanted to leave the country for a greener pasture by all means.

When asked how he managed to find his way into the tyre compartment of the aircraft, the stowaway said he jumped the perimeter fence of the airport to gain access into the MMA2 tarmac.

Stowaways had been found on Delta Airlines, Arik Air and other carriers’ planes in the past. Developments in recent weeks had revealed the porous state of security at the nation’s airports.
