Wole Soyinka pays tribute to HID Awolowo
Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka has paid a tribute to Chief Mrs Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, wife of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Mama Awolowo, popularly known as HID Awolowo, passed on at the age of 99 at her country home in Ikenne, Ogun State.
In a concise tribute Soyinka said: “An Era recedes. As solace, it leaves in its wake a treasured privilege for those who knew her, who experienced her indomitable spirit at first hand, and drank from her depthless fount of family embrace.”
Meanwhile the first daughter of HID, Mrs Omotola Oyediran, has revealed that her mother died peacefully and joyously in the presence of virtually all her children and grand children.
She was reported to have taken pounded cocoyam with her children and grand children at their meeting shortly before she breathed her last.
“We were in a meeting at Efunyela hall where arrangement on her centenary birthday was being planned. She came to meet us there and played a lot with us. She prayed a lot for all us one after the other and she even ate pounded cocoyam with us.
“Immediately after she finished eating, she told us that she wanted to go in and rest a bit, not knowing that she will be going to rest till eternity,” she revealed.
