Military threatens to demolish buildings hiding Boko Haram
The Nigerian Army on Friday threatened to demolish any facilities serving as the hideouts of any member of the terrorist group, Boko Haram.
Addressing a press conference in Maiduguri, the Theatre Commander of Operations Lafiya Dole, a military operation established to put an end to the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East, Maj. Gen. Yusha’u Abubakar, said any buildings used to perpetuate terrorism would be demolished forth with.
He warned that the military could not be deterred in the war against insurgency, saying there was a timeline for the operation against the terrorists, no allowance would be given for failure or drawbacks.
He said, “Any facilities that are used to make bombs or used to dress suicide bombers would be levelled.”
The Army chief, who confirmed that 14 persons were killed and 39 injured in Thursday’s attacks on Sajeri area of Ajilari Cross in Maiduguri, said to have been carried out by four female bombers, asked everyone to be security conscious and report any suspicious character or movement to the military.
He said the military would consult with all stakeholders – traditional rulers, religious leaders, market women and students to sensitise them on the counter-terrorism operations and what was needed to be done to collaborateon the anti-terror fight.
He said terrorists needed to be isolated in order to win the war, insisting that the public would play a big role in the exercise.
Meanwhile, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Opadokun, has called on residents of Maiduguri to avoid large gatherings which could be a major attraction to suicide bombers.
The CP, in a text message to journalists confirming the Thursday’s suicide attacks on Maiduguri, said residents should report any strange face or faces in their neighborhood to security agents.
He also urged that they should “avoid unnecessary large gathering which can be infiltrated by insurgents.”
Opadokun said, “There was IED explosion on Thursday at about 1945 hrs(7.45pm) in Sajeri area in Bulumkutu, Maiduguri, where four suspected suicide bombers detonated IEDs strapped on their bodies.
He added that the explosion happened at four different locations on the same axis, adding that the deathtoll had risen to 14 persons including the suicide bombers.
