Yola blast’s dead toll hits 70
The death toll in the mosque explosion in Yola last Friday has risen to 70, says the National Emergency Management Agency.
Among the victims were four students of the Adamawa State Polytechnic, where the Jambutu Jumaat Mosque is built.
The NEMA Coordinator in the state, Mr Saad Bello, and his counterpart in the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Mallam Aliyu Maikano, confirmed that the casualty figure had risen to 70 from the initial 40 victims reported.
The affected Mosque is sited in the Polytechnic Jambutu campus, about five kilometers from the main campus.
Speaking with newsmen on the telephone, the state Commissioner for Higher Education, Alhaji Hamid Rufai, confirmed that though 25 students and staff of the institution were caught up in the vicinity of the blast, four students died while tow staff members were injured.
“Out of the 25 affected, four students lost their lives while the rest, including two staff members, sustained varying degrees of injuries,” he added.
A Federal Government delegation, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Dr. Lawal Babachir, visited Yola on Saturday to sympathise with the government and people of Adamawa State.
