The recent demolition of about 50 buildings at an estate in Nkwelle Ezunaka, near Onitsha by the Anambra Anambra State government has been described as economic waste.
Anambra State government through the Commandant of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade), Mr Kenneth Okonkwo had stated that the demolition was necessary as the land upon which the properties were built had been acquired by government for agricultural purposes.
But an industrialist and governorship aspirant, Mr Godwin Ezeemo has frowned at the demolition, saying it was “uncalled for, barbaric and an economic waste.”
He accused the ministries in charge of land of sloppiness, saying that if they were doing their job, there was no reason the people would be allowed to erect buildings there and just when they wanted to pack in, they were demolished.
He said that the present economic situation makes destruction of properties of individuals, particularly, Anambrarians, work against the purpose of a democratic government which includes protection of lives and properties.
Ezeemo said, “The government should not have gone as far as destroying the people’s properties whatever be the reason. It is an economic waste and I am against it.
“It even hurts me more that the victims of these demolitions are Anambra State indigenes. If this happened in Abuja or Lagos, we would blame it on ethnic bias but what do we blame this one on?”
He, therefore, called on government officials to call the people involved for a round table discussion on how to resolve the issue, saying that such would have been the approach ab initio.
“The victims’ lives have been affected negatively and they have lost a large chunk of money. All these should have been put into consideration”
“We have to minimize loss and maximize profit in all our dealings,” he advised.
