Roger Federer has confirmed that he would not be playing at the upcoming French Open.

18-time Grand Slam winner says he wants to play for many more years on the ATP tour, which is why he decided to skip the entire clay swing for the year.

Federer added in a message posted on his website, that he will now prepare for the grass and hard-court seasons which start in June.

“My team and I concluded today that playing just one event on clay was not in the best interest of my tennis and physical preparation for the remainder of the season.

“I will miss the French fans, who have always been so supportive and I look forward to seeing them at Roland Garros next year,” Federer said.

Federer has not played competitive tennis since winning the Miami masters in March.
