Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State says the Catholic Church remains a strong pillar and powerful tool in the promotion and development of education, and as such will always receive the support of his administration.

Governor Ikpeazu stated this on Thursday, while receiving in audience, the leadership of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy Congregation at the Governor’s Lodge, Aba.

He assured the congregation that his administration was always willing to partner with faith-based organizations in the State, especially in education and other areas that touch on the lives of the people.

The State Chief Executive told the delegation that he will give serious consideration to their requests for assistance in their school, electricity for their premises at Ahiake Ndume Ibeku and some remedial works on the road leading to their congregation.

Governor Ikpeazu then instructed the Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board to immediately commence the building of a block of classrooms at their school, while the Commissioner for Works should visit the congregation and assess what needs to be done to give some immediate attention to the road leading to their congregation.

He thanked them for their kind words and their prayers, as well as the gifts they presented to him.

Earlier, the Superior General of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy Congregation, Ahiaeke Ndume, Rev. Mother Angeline Umezurike thanked Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for granting their request to see him.

She told the Governor that their congregation was established in the Diocese of Umuahia in 1965 by the then Bishop of Umuahia, Most Rev Anthony Gogo Nwedo basically for the purposes of evangelism and to assist humanity through other means.

Continuing, she said that they work in schools, hospitals and set up orphanages and that they also work with mentally challenged persons.

The Superior General told the Governor that they had come to identify with him and congratulate him on the series of achievements recorded by his administration, especially in the area of the provision of infrastructure and also to pray for him.

She took the opportunity to request the Governor to come to the aid of their Congregation in the area of support for their school, electricity and the road leading to their congregation at Ahiaeke Ndume Ibeku.

The delegation also presented the Governor with a pack of special cakes baked by the members of the congregation.
