The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to work together to conduct credible elections in Nigeria amid the electronic transmission of results.

Gbajabiamila disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said INEC was empowered by Nigeria’s laws and the constitution to conduct elections, while the NCC has the mandate in terms of technology.

“INEC is empowered by our laws and the constitution to conduct elections, and NCC has the mandate in terms of technology and capacity and all of that.

“So they need to work together for us to have credible elections,” Gbajabiamila said.

Recall that this is coming less than a week after the House of Representatives was thrown into confusion as members debated section 52(2) of the electoral amendment act bill, which deals with electronic transmission.

PDP policymakers walked out of a session last Friday after Ahmed Wase, the presiding officer, insisted that section 52(2) had been carried.

But an Executive Commissioner at the NCC, Adeleke Adewolu, told lawmakers at the House of Representatives that only 50 per cent of Nigeria has the 3G coverage required for transmission.

Meanwhile, INEC has since insisted it has the capacity to transmit election results electronically from remote areas across the country.
