The Osun State University, UNIOSUN, has revealed that one of its students, Oke Ademiju Victor, a final year student of Political Science, was involved in a savage attack by suspected cultists in Osogbo, Saturday night.


Confirming the development on Monday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji disclosed that the University had received a report of the attack on Oke in the late hours of Saturday, December 11, 2021 at Akede, Osun lepo area of Osogbo.


According to Adesoji, “The University noticed that Oke Ademiju Victor was absent for his final paper in the afternoon and decided to contact his parents.


“It was later discovered that he was attacked by unknown cultists in the early hours of Saturday.”


The university spokesperson reported that some of the residents of the area where the incident occurred explained that Oke was shouting that he will not join their cult group while he was continually being hit with a machete and stones.


He also stated that after the physical beating, there was an attempt to set him ablaze which was partially carried out before he was eventually rescued.


He revealed that the institution has been following up with the parents of the victim and it was confirmed that Oke was rushed to the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital for treatment and later referred to an undisclosed hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.


“The University security unit is currently working with the Osun Command of the Nigerian Police to ensure the culprits are exposed and brought to book.


“We hereby implore everyone to be calm and continue with their normal activities as the management of the University is committed and will continue to remain committed to the safety of the lives and properties of its stakeholders especially the students,” he said.


Meanwhile, the Osun Police Command Public Relations Officer, Yemisi Opalola, said police personnel were on the trail of the perpetrators.


“Investigation has commenced into the matter. Members of a cult attacked the victim. They doused him with petrol and set him ablaze.


“Our men are already on the trail of the perpetrators. The victim is believed to be a member of a rival group. He did not die. He was rushed to a hospital,” he stated.


There were several media reports on Monday of the attack on a rival cult member in Osogbo.


Reports had it that he was macheted severally and when the weapons had no effect on him, petrol was poured in him and he was set ablaze.
